Yung Lean is a rapper, singer and producer hailing from Stockholm, Sweden who was born on July 18th 1996. Since his debut in 2011 he has released one studio album, E.P and mixtape, and has helped pioneer a slowed-down, emotional style of hip-hop through his label Sad Boys Entertainment.

Jonatan Leandoer Håstad’s first exposure to hip-hop came from 50 Cent’s landmark 2005 album “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’”. Completely taken with the album, he developed a full blown passion for hip-hop soon afterwards and began his first attempts at creating it himself as well, producing a number of tracks and writing his first lyrics. Nothing major would come from this until, he met fellow hip-hop obsessives Yung Sherman and Yung Gud and struck up a friendship with both of them. This friendship lead to all three of them creating music as the Hasch boys, along with several more of their friends who were also hip-hop fans, but Sherman, Gud and Håstad were the only ones who were truly dedicated.

Soon enough, everyone else lost interest until it was just the core trio again, and together they decided to rebrand themselves as “Sad Boys”, with a genuine visual aesthetic and musical style to match. The trio would write, record and upload their tracks to Soundcloud when in 2013 Håstad, who was by this time performing under the name Yung Lean, scored an internet hit with his track “Ginseng Strip 2002”. Through a mix of word of mouth, social media and press, Yung Lean became one of the most exciting names in modern hip-hop. He’s a truly international success story as well, just over a year after “Ginseng Strip 2002” was uploaded to Soundcloud, his debut album “Unknown Memory” was released and he headlined a sold out show at New York City’s Webster Hall off the back of it.

His music is taking him to the other side of the world to his home country, and nothing seems to be able to stop him from getting even bigger as time goes on. For being a genuinely new and exciting force in hip-hop, Yung Lean comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

My friend told me about Yung Lean approximately a year ago. Even though rap is not my favorite genre, Yung Lean's music quickly grew on me. I never really thought I would get to see him live, because he is a native to Sweden and is still an up and coming artist. However, Red Bull Sound Select (RBSS) solved this issue. RBSS is a unique music platform, where curators (a music guru of a specific city or region) will promote local music groups that are up and coming. You RSVP to an event and if you get to the concert on time you will get in paying a discounted rate of $3 for a ticket. I arrived at The Loft around 7 PM, and the line had already formed around the curb of the sidewalk. Once doors opened at 8:30PM, the check in to confirm your RSVP was fast and easy. After climbing two flights of stairs, paying $3, and being checked by security, we entered into the concert space, which had 2 bars and a nice couch area all the way to the right. I situated myself toward the left of the stage and was all the way in the front. In a short amount of time, the opening acts, Jace and Finding Novyon came on. The venue was pretty packed at this point, and the crowd began jumping up and down and pushing each other side to side, without causing too much harm. Crowd surfing and fans trying to push themselves onto the stage followed right after. The audience's savagery intensified throughout the rest of the night, and, oddly enough, was celebrated. In between people dressed in taco and hamburger costumes, the smoke of vapors, the smell of various people's sweat mixed together, and failed attempts from certain audience members to use illicit drugs, I was given a space be present in the moment. As soon as Yung Lean came on, the energy exploded as Lean performed a variety of songs from various albums, including his EP. I didn't want the night to end because this is by far one of the coolest concerts I've ever been too. Afterwards, we were all told to leave the concert room, and I was unsure of whether Lean would be willing to take pictures with fans. He proved to be the exact opposite of who I thought he was. He came downstairs, took pictures, and immediately became one of the coolest rappers I've ever met. I will definitely be on the lookout to further concerts and wish him the best in his career.

Going into the Fillmore at Silver Spring, on the second night of Yung Lean's U.S. Warlord tour, I expected a majority or even all of the tracks on his setlist to be from the recent release of Warlord, and very few of tracks from his previous projects. With that, I was excitedly surprised to hear Motorola come in right after his opening track. He played most of my favorites throughout the performance, notably Volt, Diamonds, Sandman, Monster, and the encores of Yoshi City and Ginseng Strip 2002

Opening before Lean was Adamn Killa, whom I hadn't heard of prior, but with which I was pleasantly surprised to experience. His laid-back Chief Keef like style and the intense bass of each song was a nice and relaxing introduction to the banging opening of Hoover just an hour later.

Yung Lean live was vocally much more interesting than I had anticipated. With Leandoer's high energy, dancing around the stage and practically screaming into the mic, and Bladee's more relaxed back-up vocals occasionally harmonizing in dream-like ways (especially during Diamonds and Monster), it was a heart-racing and extremely energetic night. The crowd's mosh-like jumping and screaming along to the bangers blasting from the stage only added to the energy.

I went with a friend who hadn't heard any of Lean's music spare a few music videos beforehand, and he loved the obsessive energy of the crowd and both Lean's personality and musical appeal. His live set being so much more powerful than his studio music would likely sway any "on the fence" casual fans of Lean into wishing he'd never left stage.

Overall, it was definitely one of the best performances I've ever been to.

#sadboys Say what you will about Yung Lean's talent. Most will say it isn't there, and I find myself as one of the few arguing not only its existence, but its greatness; Yung Lean knows how to put on a show. His first ever US show, a sold out show at Webster Hall, was easily the best show I've ever been too. He performed never-before-heard songs, as well as running through all the classics. Every line was echoed from the front of the room to the back. Never before have I been so captured by a performance, literally. The crowd pogos and sways, following Leandoer like Simon Says. The whole #sadboys crew is dancing up on stage, as well as stage diving. He threw his hat into the audience early on, and quickly donned another one. Much to my surprise, he then hurled this hat into the audience only 2 songs later. His charisma and love for the music truly shows in his live performances. Get tickets while you still can.

first concert i went to and it was great. 2 friends accompanied me and i hate em both. but yung lean was great. he crowdsurfed us and we touched him. his legs were in my face and i was very happy. everything was great except for the fact that i did not once see gud or sherman. palmistry supported the show and his music was sick too, unfortunately nobody knew the lyrics but everything was still great. thank you yung lean your music makes me very happy dadi.

The Yung Lean concert was one of the best alternative concerts I ever saw. The people were very kind. And I really like the hipster scene so... Yung Lean is just awesome and I thaught he wouldn't be good live but he is even better live then on YouTube for example.

Greetings from Belguim

I saw Yung Lean & Sadboys at Neptune Theater in Seattle, March 2016. Yung Lean brought much more energy than I anticipated from his recordings. For someone so young, he's a great performer and he knows how to get a crowd going. His set ran pretty short though. It lasted only an hour.

More about: Yung Lean

yung lean stranger tour

The cult Swedish rapper and producer is an enigmatic and complex creature. His hollow sounds capture a sentiment of young infatuation with sadness – blending inspirations from Ingmar Bergman and Nordic folklore, with hyper-reality and the future.

One of the first Swedish rappers to break across the globe, Yung Lean kicked off his career with the Sad Boys, a crew with a name that reflected the melancholic nature of Lean's music. Born Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, Lean was 16 when he joined producers Yung Gud and Yung Sherman in the Sad Boys around 2012. A year later, the crew was releasing tracks under Yung Lean's name, including Ginseng Strip 2002 , which earned two million views after it became a viral hit. The Unknown Death 2002 mixtape landed that same year, along with the Lavender EP, which gave Ginseng Strip 2002 an official release. His official debut full-length, Unknown Memory , followed in 2014 and peaked within the Top 40 of the U.S. Heatseekers, Top R&B/hip-hop, and rap charts. The effort was supported by a tour of Europe and North America. A year later he cut the Crystal Clear Ice single for the Adult Swim label and issued his sophomore album, Warlord . That same year, he released the Frost God mixtape, which featured an appearance by A$AP Ferg on Crystal City . In 2017, Lean began his shift away from the darker side of cloud rap into more overtly mainstream pop-trap territory on his third album, Stranger .

Yung Lean 3

Yung Lean: strange days

On his third studio album stranger, the stockholm rapper increasingly blurs the line between jonatan leandoer håstad and yung lean.

When Jonatan Leandoer Håstad calls me from his apartment in Sweden, he’s recovering from a brief trip to Shanghai. Having spent two days flying there and back to play a show and open a pop-up shop, he wasn’t given a lot of time to fully enjoy it. “I liked China, though,” he says, in between musings about a bizarre, Nutella-tasting pork dish he tried there and one suspiciously insect-like meal. “It was very original. It was very much itself. (They) didn’t really care about anything else.”

It’s a quote that sums up a lot about Leandoer. As Yung Lean , the 21-year-old Stockholm rapper has created a world that is very much his own. His inspired and often surreal take on hip hop connects deeply with his often ultra-dedicated fanbase, although it’s left just as many listeners confounded and struggling to figure him out. When Lean first emerged, he was a 16-year-old internet curiosity who dubbed himself a “sad boy” and proudly rapped about his emotions and his favourite American drinks (namely Arizona Iced Tea and Gatorade); since then his music has become darker, stranger, and more unpredictable. “I guess I’m just proud that I kept on working, not becoming just a viral hit,” he says.

This month, Lean is returning with his third studio album,  Stranger  – not that he’s been quiet recently. In 2016 he put out no less than four projects: an album and mixtape as Yung Lean, a limited cassette EP as Jonatan Leandoer127, and a digital album with Död Mark. The former is an outlet for ideas that are either too avant-garde or too rough-and-ready for Yung Lean, while the latter is a punk band he formed with Gud, his frequent collaborator and producer. This is all alongside launching his own clothing line, modelling for Calvin Klein, and appearing on Frank Ocean’s remarkable album  Blonde .

Oshiro_20240129_DAZED_NY_009_edit_HR_PRINT_finals

Stranger  is an appropriate title for the album, considering he’s yet again reinventing what we’ve come to know as Yung Lean. Sparse and more melodic than his previous output, the album feels directly affected by his side-projects, and something of a respite from the oppressive sounds of 2016’s  Warlord . Recorded in Miami at a time when Lean was over-indulging in drugs and having recently lost his close friend and manager, Barron Machat, that album saw Lean delve far too deep into the darker recesses in his mind. “ Stranger  is much easier, a neon, light-blue sound,” Lean says. “If  Warlord  was going through the gates of hell, you would come out the other end into a garden and  Stranger  is playing with medieval naked people laying in the garden.”

Lean’s early music was a take on then-cutting edge American hip hop spun through a distorted lens thanks to his geographical distance from the US, his surroundings in Sweden, and his upbringing in the internet age. “That’s how it starts,” Lean says. “You look at things and people through a lens, and it comes out completely different.” His sound was shaped by the groundbreaking production of his friends Gud, Yung Sherman, and White Armor, and is still influencing countless kids on Soundcloud today. On  Stranger , that sound has developed into something else entirely. The rap clichés that he once twisted have been replaced with lyrics that are more intense and deep-seated, and production that’s more inventive. “I’m still an outsider in the hip hop community,” Lean says. “I don’t even know if I’m making hip hop anymore.”

Yung Lean

If  Warlord  was Lean’s gothic romanticism period, then  Stranger  is his Italian renaissance. When I  spoke to him last year , his answers were contemplative; a year removed, he sounds a lot more relaxed and conversational. “It’s gonna be nice to get it out,” he says of the album. “It feels like it’s about time. It’s good to move on – for me at least.” There’s a lot more laughing, and more enthusiastic discussion about the far more pleasant experience of recording the album. He even brings up a few anecdotes, like the time his father, Kristoffer Leandoer, worked for a magazine, turning down a performance from The Knife during their early days, telling them their music was too dark. “He still regrets that to this day,” Lean laughs.

“I guess I’m just proud that I kept on working, not becoming just a viral hit” – Yung Lean

The darkness hasn’t left him or his music entirely, though. Lean is no longer the Pokémon-obsessed kid we heard on 2013’s “Hurt”. Instead,  Stranger  draws from supernatural horror novels surreal literature. He found himself attracted to the mystery of Carcosa, a mysterious fictional city that’s turned up across literature for over one hundred years, with album closer “Yellowman” heavily referencing Robert W. Chambers’ 1895 novel  The King in Yellow . Lean says his interest Carcosa comes from the same place as his interest in the life of Yukio Mishima, the nationalist Japanese author staged an attempted coup in 1970, taking over a military base before taking his own life via ritualistic suicide. “It’s the same reason (I’m) attracted to black metal, or Edgar Allan Poe,” he adds.

Lean lights up when we discuss literature. When I last spoke to him, he recommended Mishima’s  The Temple of the Golden Pavilion ; today, he’s talking about South American writing. “These two guys called Roberto Bolaño and Julio Cortázar, they have these really beautiful surrealistic novels – they kinda gave me hope for reading again,” he gushes. “As soon as my brain starts working on reading a book, my dreams get a little more exciting and music comes a little more naturally for me. It also creates new ideas. I was reading  Fahrenheit 451  and I fell asleep on the plane while reading it, and then I had this weird dream about this girl changing her face. She said, ‘If I stand up on the plane, they’re going to straighten my hair, and plastic surgery my face. They’re gonna do it, they’re gonna do it.’ She stands up, they run up and do it, and she sits down again. And then I woke up.”

These types of dreams and abstruse ideas crop up across Stranger . “Agony”, a piano-led track with dream-logic lines like “My window smiles with fright,” is a far cry from his debut mixtape Unknown Death , with a Lynchian sense of hidden evil. “When I’m afraid I lose my mind, it’s fine it happens all the time,” he sings, as if at peace with misery. With no features from big name collaborators or even his own close-knit circle of friends, Stranger offers a closer look at Leandoer. “The only feature we have on ( Stranger ) is an Icelandic children’s choir,” he says in reference to “Agony”, adding: “I’m excited for that. They were great to work with. I very much felt like Damon Albarn.”

“I’m still an outsider in the hip hop community. I don’t even know if I’m making hip hop anymore” – Yung Lean

Much of this sound draws from Lean’s Scandinavian heritage, too. “It’s very Swedish, with the minimal production,” he says. “I guess it kinda makes sense. You can’t really run from your roots. I played the album for my friend, and he was like, ‘Oh, this sounds like The Knife.’” That’s not to mention the influence of his producers. “It felt like me, Gud, Sherman and White Armor were a band,” Lean explains. “The process of it was, like…” He pauses. “I can’t even remember it, ‘cause it was just having fun, basically. We were just creating, kinda like jamming, and then out of nowhere we had 14 songs. Then we went to Iceland, to Björk’s drummer’s studio, to finish the record. And there I finally realised, ‘Oh shit we actually made an album.’”

There’s no such thing as a linear path for Yung Lean. After rapping about “Poppin’ pills like zits” four years ago, he’s now offering a deeper insight into the sadness he once joked about. It’s all there in the album name: “There’s been too many borders,” he says of the title, “and everyone’s become a stranger to each other. You’re a stranger to me, I’m not a stranger to you.” For an album that’s more Jonatan Leandoer Håstad than Yung Lean has ever been, it feels like he’s no longer a stranger to himself either.

Covid-safe information, frequently asked questions, the return of sweden’s pioneering hip-hop star.

Swedish hip-hop phenomenon Yung Lean returns to Australia for his debut performance at Vivid LIVE, presented by Sydney legend and underground prophet 3NDLES5.

From viral internet star to pioneering cloud rapper and pop experimentalist, the Swedish rapper, producer and singer-songwriter Yung Lean has captured the sound and spirit of an era.

He first came to attention – and notoriety – in 2013 with his breakout track “Ginseng Strip 2002”, a viral smash that blew up on YouTube. While critics suspected the track to be a novelty hit, Yung Lean not only endured, he thrived. As an innovator in the world of SoundCloud rap, he released a string of acclaimed albums and mixtapes – including  Unknown Memory  (2014) and  Warlord , (2016), and  Stranger (2017) – that defined a buzzy new wave of dissociative hip-hop.

Yung Lean expanded his dream-trap sound on 2020’s  Starz , and leaned into pop experimentalism on 2022’s mixtape  Stardust , which featured ambitious takes on rap, post-punk and electro, and featured high-profile collaborations with fka twigs (“Bliss”) and Skrillex (“SummerTime Blood”). Later that year, “Ginseng Strip 2002” experienced a massive viral resurgence on TikTok, captivating a whole new generation of kids.

Don’t miss one of the most creative young artists in the game.

Channelling the chaos and beauty of the deep, dank Sydney underground, 3NDLES5 is the off-kilter electronic music project from Mitch Tolman, a former member of local post-punk legends Low Life. In 2023, 3NDLES5 curated the Posh isolation event for Vivid LIVE.
