Yung Lean

The cult Swedish rapper and producer is an enigmatic and complex creature. His hollow sounds capture a sentiment of young infatuation with sadness – blending inspirations from Ingmar Bergman and Nordic folklore, with hyper-reality and the future.

One of the first Swedish rappers to break across the globe, Yung Lean kicked off his career with the Sad Boys, a crew with a name that reflected the melancholic nature of Lean's music. Born Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, Lean was 16 when he joined producers Yung Gud and Yung Sherman in the Sad Boys around 2012. A year later, the crew was releasing tracks under Yung Lean's name, including Ginseng Strip 2002 , which earned two million views after it became a viral hit. The Unknown Death 2002 mixtape landed that same year, along with the Lavender EP, which gave Ginseng Strip 2002 an official release. His official debut full-length, Unknown Memory , followed in 2014 and peaked within the Top 40 of the U.S. Heatseekers, Top R&B/hip-hop, and rap charts. The effort was supported by a tour of Europe and North America. A year later he cut the Crystal Clear Ice single for the Adult Swim label and issued his sophomore album, Warlord . That same year, he released the Frost God mixtape, which featured an appearance by A$AP Ferg on Crystal City . In 2017, Lean began his shift away from the darker side of cloud rap into more overtly mainstream pop-trap territory on his third album, Stranger .

Yung Lean – ‘Stranger’ Review

The prolific Swedish rapper’s tales of prescription drugs and bad parties edge ever closer towards pop

yung lean stranger tour

Several of 2017’s hip-hop chart breakthroughs have one thing in common: they’re sad, despairing and desolate. Take Post Malone’s ‘Rockstar’, Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘XO Tour Llif3’ or Future’s ‘Mask Off’. All three coat big hooks in tales of bleak, nihilistic excess. This isn’t a new trend by any stretch. In fact, Yung Lean was already mastering the same subjects aged 16.

In 2012, the Swedish rapper – real name Jonatan Leandoer Håstad – made apathy and despondency his winning formula. Breakthrough viral track ‘Ginseng Strip 2002’ is a nostalgia-laced tale of STIs and opiates that kickstarted Lean’s Sad Boy movement (the name given to his Stockholm crew and bucket hat-wearing fans). Since then, Håstad has steered his codeine-soaked songs in the direction of pop. Referring to himself in the third person, he told NME in 2016, “Lean could be on some Sid Vicious punk s**t one day, and then on some heartbroken Justin Timberlake / Nelly Furtado s**t.”

‘Stranger’ doesn’t go full Timberlake, but he’s getting there. ‘Red Bottom Sky’ is a sparse tale of tragedy, while the pent-up and riled beat for ‘Skimask’ could easily be mistaken for a Weeknd hit.

But Yung Lean still lacks quality control. The middle bulk of ‘Stranger’ can feel like being suspended in ice, experiencing a never-ending comedown. All loose keys and vague, drug-fuelled boasts, he rarely finds a hook to match the likes of ‘Rockstar’ or ‘Mask Off’. There’s one big exception: ‘Agony’ is a gorgeously honest song, starved of the default sheen that lets down a lot of ‘Stranger’. Over a meditative piano loop, Håstad sings, “When I’m afraid I lose my mind / It’s fine, it happens all the time”.

‘Agony’ highlights the difference between Yung Lean and his more chart-glued contemporaries. While their songs are catch-all anthems of overindulgence, his stories feel real and personal. In 2016, his former manager died in a car crash, and he checked into a mental hospital. Tragedy surrounds Yung Lean’s work, and ‘Stranger’’s best moments find him channelling turmoil into something cathartic.

Yung Lean: Stranger review – hypnotic soundscapes

T he 21-year-old Swedish innovator is back with an album of hypnotic soundscapes that thankfully feels more comfortable in itself than 2016’s ropy Warlord . Indeed, in the year that saw the emo cloud rap of Lil Uzi Vert’s XO Tour Llif3 become song of the summer, Yung Lean ’s sadboy aesthetic feels more fitting than ever. Channelling his uniquely hazy take on melodic southern hip-hop, Lean’s lyrics pour forth Bart Simpson-bravado (on Skimask ) as much as harrowing insights into the paranoia that engulfs his mental health and romantic life ( Red Bottom Sky ). Stranger is especially striking for its beautiful production, drifting with dark synth glossiness that can feel a little meandering and aimless but just about avoids self-indulgence.

Album Review: Yung Lean – Stranger

A slowly blossoming artist leaving buzzworthy virality in favor of something more substantial

Album Review: Yung Lean – Stranger

Four years after shrugging his way into the hip-hop conversation with the gauzy Unknown Death 2002 , Jonatan Leandoer Håstad might be the most unsung young influencer in all of contemporary hip-hop. Though the connecting lines are arguably more dotted and circuitous than solid and straight, the emo wave of SoundCloud rap that brought us the likes of Lil Peep and Trippie Redd owes a certain spiritual debt to the Sad Boys movement. While Yung Lean and his like-minded cabal never quite blew up on Billboard , the miasmatic spread of this current, oft-Floridian sound into the charting mainstream nonetheless smells of his groundwork if not his actual handiwork.

That exceedingly rare European to make any headway in the highly competitive and domestically biased American hip-hop market, the fresh-faced Håstad initially connected with young audiences stateside via seemingly non sequitur bars thick with teenage ennui and insular, meme-worthy references to Mario Kart and Arizona Iced Tea. Though he now favors his soft drinks spiked with cough syrup like most modern rappers, the overall aesthetic present on 2014’s irresistible Unknown Memory scarcely dissipated from his work on subsequent releases like last year’s underappreciated Warlord . Much like Future’s most honest, post- Honest material,  Håstad captured codeine agony in amber, struggling to convey his emotions in fragile monotone. His endearing foreignness and casual druggy mindset made him somehow relatable, especially to a segment of American rap listeners who will never see the inside of a trap house firsthand.

Despite Håstad re-teaming with familiar producers GUD and Yung Sherman, Stranger sounds oddly more polished than his prior records. From the exploratory echoes of opener “Muddy Sea” onward, his latest full-length under the Yung Lean moniker presents an artist moving forward cautiously yet with intent. In a narcotized blur of relationship anxiety, genre tropes, and palatial keys, cuts like “Salute / Pacman” and the absurdly timely single “Red Bottom Sky” show a slowly blossoming artist leaving his buzzworthy virality behind for something more viably sustainable.

On the mic, Håstad remains stubborn nearly to the point of stagnation, his flows as predictable as his range is limited. The somber singsong of “Hunting My Own Skin” and “Metallic Intuition” will come as no surprise to those who’ve followed his journey thus far. Yet, nobody comes to Yung Lean records for vocal mastery. Rather, it’s that very lackadaisical nature that makes his fugue vogue so realistic on “Skimask” and the dour piano ballad “Agony”.

The Lynchian drip of album closer “Yellowman” threatens to put the rest of the otherwise above average Stranger to shame. Over a shimmering synth bed reminiscent of composer Angelo Badalamenti’s classic work with singer Julee Cruise, Håstad conjures up Carcosa in a magnificent mélange of blackened heart and romanticized horror. At a pivotal midpoint, the track shifts to a martial Skinny Puppy carnival, replete with icy Ogre-esque flatness. Towards its finale, the looming cholera returns to an agreeable melancholy. All of this is accomplished in less than five minutes, making it easy to return for repeat listening.

By the end of Stranger , one can’t help but speculate what a less risk-averse and adventurous Yung Lean might have done to close out 2017. Admittedly, his already experimentally minded production partners appear to have progressed enough to stay interesting and avoid the pitfalls of appropriation. Still, with no fewer than five releases of note in his discography, Håstad has little reason not to take some chances outside of his discomfiting comfort zone. If anything, Stranger is too parochial at this stage in his career, altogether enjoyable yet only seldom worthy of evangelizing. As his fanbase begins to mature, Håstad owes it to himself to grow up with them.

Very good, based on 7 critics.

T he 21-year-old Swedish innovator is back with an album of hypnotic soundscapes that thankfully feels more comfortable in itself than 2016's ropy Warlord. Indeed, in the year that saw the emo cloud rap of Lil Uzi Vert's XO Tour Llif3 become song of the summer, Yung Lean's sadboy aesthetic feels more fitting than ever. Full Review >>

For those out of the loop, Lean is a Swedish rapper, who, along with his producers/best friends Yung Gud and Yung Sherman (aka the Sad Boys), they created somewhat of a hype frenzy when they uploaded videos to YouTube that were rife with slacker style. With his 2013 track "Kyoto" currently standing at 29 million views, it's hard to pin down exactly what aspect of Lean has caused this mammoth hype. If you are one of those who are out of the loop, his third album Stranger is actually a pretty good place to start.

It was easy, when he first emerged, to feel cynical about Yung Lean off name alone: a perfectly grating encapsulation of a certain early-2010s mode of irony that reconstituted hollowed-out rap tropes into winky Tumblr art. If Lean and his small crew of disillusioned Swedish teenagers hadn't come up with the Sad Boys, inevitably someone else would have. My Twitter timeline, around the time "Ginseng Strip 2002" was blowing up, was filled with the same performative melancholy--sincere articulations of depression primed for external validation, or sometimes simply sadness as #aesthetic.

Four years after shrugging his way into the hip-hop conversation with the gauzy Unknown Death 2002, Jonatan Leandoer Håstad might be the most unsung young influencer in all of contemporary hip-hop. Though the connecting lines are arguably more dotted and circuitous than solid and straight, the emo wave of SoundCloud rap that brought us the likes of Lil Peep and Trippie Redd owes a certain spiritual debt to the Sad Boys movement. While Yung Lean and his like-minded cabal never quite blew up on Billboard, the miasmatic spread of this current, oft-Floridian sound into the charting mainstream nonetheless smells of his groundwork if not his actual handiwork.

Yung Lean does most things with an unshakable confidence. Key among the reasons for that is surely his prodigious work rate, which means that the next opportunity to right any perceived wrongs is never far away. Not that he's set too many feet wrong so far; the Swede - still only 21 - enjoyed near ubiquitous rave reviews for both his 2016 releases - second LP, 'Warlord', and December's surprise release, 'Frost God'.

Several of 2017's hip-hop chart breakthroughs have one thing in common: they're sad, despairing and desolate. Take Post Malone's 'Rockstar', Lil Uzi Vert's 'XO Tour Llif3' or Future's 'Mask Off'. All three coat big hooks in tales of bleak, nihilistic excess. This isn't a new trend by any stretch ….

F ew artists seem as likely to reduce unsuspecting listeners to a profound state of WTF? as Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, better known as Yung Lean. A baby-faced 21-year-old rapper from Stockholm, who rose to prominence aged 16 thanks to a viral YouTube video, his lyrical shtick, delivered in a voice that veers between Nordic and faux-American, is based on a combination of drizzly Drake-ish solipsism (the crew he heads is known as the Sad Boys) and mumbly depictions of a lifestyle based around an arsenal of drugs including weed, cocaine, ecstasy, Percocet and the cough syrup-laced drink from which he takes his name. It's not so much that he's a European rapper who, rather than come up with a style of his own, has settled for mimicking what black American artists do.

One of the first Swedish rappers to break around the globe, Yung Lean is a highly influential figure of the cloud rap and emo rap scenes. He kicked off his career with the Sad Boys, a crew with a name that reflected the melancholic nature of Lean's music. Substance abuse and mental illness were frequent topics in both Yung Lean's early music and life outside of the studio as he grappled with addiction and bipolar disorder. The intensity of his life bled into the bleak atmospheres of his music on early solo records and has carried over to more commercially geared efforts like 2017's Stranger (a number 18 hit in Sweden), 2020's Starz, and the guest-loaded 2022 mixtape Stardust. He gradually began devoting more time to making rock and singer/songwriter music as Jonatan Leandoer96, though he continued using the Yung Lean handle for releases like 2024's Psykos, a collaboration with Bladee owing more to post-punk and alternative rock than rap.

Born Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad, Lean was 16 when he joined producers Yung Gud and Yung Sherman in the Sad Boys around 2012. A year later, the crew was releasing tracks under Yung Lean's name, including "Ginseng Strip 2002," which earned two million views after it became a viral hit. The Unknown Death 2002 mixtape landed that same year, along with the Lavender EP, which gave "Ginseng Strip 2002" an official release. Lean's debut full-length, Unknown Memory, followed in 2014 and reached the U.S. R&B/hip-hop, rap, and heatseekers charts. The effort was supported by a tour of Europe and North America. A year later, he cut the "Crystal Clear Ice" single for the Adult Swim label and issued his sophomore album, Warlord. That same year, he released the Frost God mixtape, which featured an appearance by A$AP Ferg on "Crystal City."

In 2017, Yung Lean began his shift away from the darker side of cloud rap into more overtly mainstream pop-trap territory on his third album, Stranger, which reached number 18 on the Sverigetopplistan chart. 2018's Poison Ivy mixtape was a return to the raw, home-recorded tone of early Sad Boys material. In May 2020, just after the Tribeca Film Festival premier of the documentary Yung Lean: In My Head, Lean issued his fourth album, Starz. The full-length split the difference between the bleak cloud rap of Lean's earliest work and a more polished, pop-friendly approach to production. While the title track credits elements to Ariel Pink, there were no other features on the album. The 2022 commercial mixtape Stardust, however, involved the likes of FKA twigs, Skrillex, and Bladee as Lean continued to balance his idiosyncrasies with mainstream appeal. He also veered away from rap with his material under the name Jonatan Leandoer96, including the 2023 album Sugar World, which was more of a singer/songwriter record. Psykos, Yung Lean's first full collaboration with Bladee, arrived in 2024, exploring indie rock and post-punk influences. ~ David Jeffries & Neil Z. Yeung
