13/02: Charlie's Thanks To Everyone For The Recent Euro Tour

Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs has posted his thoughts on the recently finished Euro Tour on his Facebook page: "With the Euro tour concluded, I’m now back home in SW France and have begun processing the events of the last three-and-a-half weeks. My conclusion is that this final multi-date continental sojourn has been by far the best we’ve undertaken. Every show has been sold out and the response from each of the packed venue’s attendees has been exceptionally appreciative and fervent. The last seven gigs – Linz and Vienna in Austria; Munich, Karlsruhe and Dortmund in Germany; Arlon and Aarschot in Belgium – were no different in that regard and it was a real joy to play every one of those shows, as it was for all those prior to our final run.

I’ve once again provided a series of pics, this time taken from the latter part of the tour. In the near future we have the Scarborough Punk Festival on the 26th of March and Scotland Calling festival in Glasgow on the 23rd of April.

More festivals and short-term visit shows in Europe will also be forthcoming 2023. See yas at a gig somewhere/sometime later in the year. A"

07/02: Stefan Euro Tour Review

I wanna take the moment to say thank you! First of all to the amazing UK Subs fans that welcomed me warmly from the first moment and gave everything at every show. Thanks for your pogo, for the singing along, taking pictures and shooting videos (which I probably nicked from you for this post without mentioning, sorry for that) and basically for making this an unforgettable tour. Another big thanks to Yuko Morinaga and Gwinny Punk for their professional management and impressive organization talent. With them the hardest path is walked with ease! Thank you. Further do I owe a big thank you to the band. With Alvin Gibbs and Stephen Straughan giving me a masterclass on stage performance and instrumental craftsmanship. And of course the legendary Charlie Harper for being just him. Very impressing, I learned so much! Thanks guys. Not to forget the brilliant NASTY RUMOURS with their great shows and songs just being the best individuals you can have by your side. Danny Ramone, Jamous Tight Finks, Julash Nikov, Florian Weber and Ruhe Dimaare! Thanks for everything!!! At last but not least I wanna say thanks to those individuals that made it possible that the UK SUBS could have a chance to see me drumming in a first place what led to this great tour for me. "Dispatches from the frontline of the final UK Subs’ European tour, part 2…

Well, without doubt, this has been the most successful and enjoyable European tour that I’ve experienced with UK Subs since embarking on my first Euro excursion with the band back in 1980. Every single show has been sold out and the audiences have been amazing, dancing and singing along for the entirety of our show and demanding at least 2 encores a night before they’re finally satisfied and ready to leave. People we’ve not seen for years have turned up for this concluding event and gifted us all kinds of goodies (in my case, for some inexplicable reason, mainly bottles of fine wines) and other farewell presents, all of which have been much appreciated and duly drunk, eaten or stored away in our suitcases for taking home. Tonight it’s another sell-out in Linz, Austria, and we’ve just heard that due to overwhelming ticket demand we’ve been moved from the usual 500 capacity room at the Arena to the far bigger venue that adjoins it for tomorrow’s show in the beautiful city of Vienna. Seven more gigs to go – Linz, Vienna, Munich, Karlsruhe, Dortmund, Arlon and Aarschot – before we’re homeward bound. If you’re thinking of coming to one of these concluding shows do buy your tickets early to save disappointment as its likely they will also be sold out... Have a great week. A"

23/01: Alvin Euro Tour Report Part I Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs has posted the following on his Facebook page...

"Dispatches from the frontline of the final UK Subs’ European tour, part 1… So far nine shows played, every single one a sell-out – over 1,200 punters in Hamburg, more than a 1000 for the Berlin gig, and capacity audiences for all the 400 to 600 range of venues. The audience response has been extraordinary, at least 2 encores demanded and given each night and a warmth and appreciation for the band that has topped all previous tours. Our new drummer Stefan Haublein has proved himself to be a superb stickman and a fun travelling companion; Stevie Straughan has, as ever, been kicking out the jams and Charlie’s singing and rapport with the audiences has been outstanding. A shout-out must also be given to Yuko who’s been doing a sterling job on the merch table and for our hard working driver/roadie Gwinny Punk plus, our excellent support band for the entire tour, Nasty Rumours, who, as well as playing some fine 1977 style Punk rock music, have proved to be as personable and reliable a bunch of lads as you could wish for. It’s a day off in Germany today for a deserved 24 hours of rest and recuperation. Cologne tomorrow and a further eleven gig in an assortment of Euro cities to follow, which will include Vienna, Munich, Nuremburg, Luzern and Frankfurt. Will report back on how those measure up... 10/01: Some thoughts on the forthcoming Euro tour from Stephen Straughan

"Well! Who would have thought it. This is my 7th year being a UK Sub member. Tomorrow I hit the road once again with the troops. That being my comrades, fellow pirates of the motorway and partners in crime and music, Charlie, Alvin and new drummer Stefan Häublein. The crew wouldn't be complete without Yuko and driver Gwinny. This European tour will certainly be an emotional one that's for sure as it is unfortunately our last European tour. I hope any of you attending these dates will join us in the fun. 03/01: U.K. Subs announcement

HAPPY NEW YEAR… HAPPY NEW DRUMMER!

The U.K. Subs are delighted to announce that joining Charlie, Alvin and Steve for next week’s Lewes and London gigs, and for the subsequent January/February European tour dates will be the multi talented drummer Stefan Häublein, who is also the sticksman for TV Smith and the Bored Teenagers. Stefan previously played drums with Ava Adore from 2015 to 2020, the band of TV Smith’s guitarist Marc Carrey, with his other current projects being drummer for Dexist, who are a post-punk band from Barcelona, where Stefan currently lives. Stefan, who at present has committed to fill the Subs drum stool for all Subs gigs up to and including May 2023, had these few words for the Subs faithful when asked: “I’m really looking forward to meeting all the U.K. Subs fanatics, I can’t wait to start as this is so fucking exciting!” Welcome to the Subs family Stefan :-)

UK Subs announce final full UK tour

U.K. Subs have announced tour dates for their final full tour of the UK. The shows will take place in September and tickets go on sale on February 15. U.K. Subs released their cover album Subversions II in 2019 and their studio album Ziezo in 2016. Check out the dates below.

UK Subs' frontman Charlie Harper will celebrate his 80th birthday next year and is therefore coming to Melkweg with the Subs! Of course with a long list of live hits and bandmates, Alvin Gibbs, bassist legend himself, punk rock poster man Stephen Straughan on guitar and drum wizard Stefan Häublein. Enough reasons to come and see this legendary band play live!

Public Service Broadcasting announce massive 2024 UK and European tour

The shows arrive as the band are teasing new music for this summer

Public Service Broadcasting have announced details of a huge tour across the UK and Europe – set to take place later this year. Find dates and ticket details below.

Set to kick off this winter, the London-based band will travel across the UK and Ireland for the first leg of the 2024 tour, before making their way over to mainland Europe for the latter half of the new dates.

The shows will launch with an opening night at the Cyprus Avenue venue in Cork on October 11, followed by a stop at the Telegraph Building in Belfast the following night. From there, slots in Dublin, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Manchester are booked, as well as other cities across the UK.

These include gigs at the Albert Hall in Manchester, the O2 Academy in Leeds, Rock City in Nottingham, London’s Roundhouse and more. The UK shows conclude with a show in Aylesbury on October 31 – held at the Waterside Theatre.

From there, the European dates run throughout November and start with a gig at the Melkweg venue in Amsterdam, followed by stops in Brussels, Cologne, Hamburg, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and more.

The tour wraps up with further shows across Spain, Italy and Switzerland, before closing with a final gig at the Petit Bain in Paris on November 29.

The announcement of an upcoming 2024 tour comes as the first since the conceptual pop proggers hit the road in support of 2021’s ‘Bright Magic’ album.

It also comes as the quartet are planning to release new material over the next few months. At time of writing, no further details have been shared on what fans can expect from the upcoming music, although if it does turn out to be a full studio album, it’ll mark the first from the band in three years.

Ahead of the upcoming UK and European trek, Public Service Broadcasting will play a sold-out show at Durham Cathedral as part of Durham BRASS Festival. Taking place on July 5, it’ll see the members perform their 2017 album ‘Every Valley’ in full and accompanied by the 38-piece NASUWT Riverside Brass Band.

When is the Masters 2024? Guide including where to watch and LIV players

A lack of world ranking points has prevented many LIV golfers from participating in this year’s tournament

• The Masters day three as it happened

The first of the year’s four major golf tournaments, the Masters is a fixture of the spring sporting calendar, timed to come to a head when the azaleas are in full bloom in Georgia.

When does the Masters start?

This year’s tournament got under way on Thursday, April 11, and concludes today: Sunday, April 14. 

The traditional par three contest was on Wednesday, April 10, featuring the families of some of golf’s top players. There have been 107 holes in one made at the par three contest since it was inaugurated in 1960. 

How can I watch the Masters on TV?

In the UK, the Masters is broadcast exclusively on Sky Sports Golf . 

Free-to-air coverage is on the Masters website, where viewers can watch every individual shot a few minutes after it happens.

Radio coverage of the tournament in the UK is on Talksport. 

In previous years the Masters has been shown on free-to-air television in the UK, either live or as highlights. Last year, however, the BBC cut ties with the tournament completely.

Where is the Masters played?

The Masters is the only one of golf’s four majors that is played at the same course each year . 

Augusta National Golf Club is in the north east of Georgia, close to the border with South Carolina. Augusta National is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world. There are understood to be only about 300 members, among them Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. The only way to play the course is by invitation of a member.

There is a more pernicious side to the club’s exclusivity, though. Augusta did not permit an African American member until 1990, while there were no female members until 2012 when Condoleezza Rice joined.

What is the Masters prize money?

This year’s total purse is expected to be $18 million (£14.2 million), the same as it was last year. The winner takes $3,240,000 (£2.51 million) with incrementally less prize money for each of the top 50 finishers. 

The winner also get a replica of the official trophy (which never leaves the club). The champion golfer also receives a gold medal and, most coveted of all, a green jacket. 

There are also trophies for finishing second, being the leading amateur golfer, recording the lowest score of the day, hitting a hole in one, hitting an eagle and hitting a double eagle.

How do players qualify for the Masters?

Technically speaking, players receive an invitation to play in the Masters. Unlike the US Open or the Open Championship, there is no ‘open’ qualification process.

There are 20 different ways to make sure an envelope from Augusta drops through your letterbox. The simplest way is to be in the top 50 of the world rankings on January 1.

All previous Masters champions can play, should they choose to take up the invitation, as well as those players who finished in the top 12 of the previous year’s tournament.

Any player who won a fully-sanctioned PGA Tour event the previous season will also book their place for Augusta. The same goes for any player who achieved a top-four finish in any of the previous season’s majors, while major winners secure their Masters berth for five years. 

Any player in the world’s top 50 the week before the Masters will also be invited. The Masters also reserves the right to invite wildcard players. 

The rest of the field is made up of the winners of the amateur game’s most distinguished events. The Masters is a smaller field than the other three majors, with around 90 players usually in attendance.

At this year’s tournament there will be only five or six British golfers (depending on whether Danny Willett is well enough recovered after shoulder surgery). James Corrigan explains why so few UK players now make it to Augusta . 

Will LIV golfers be at the Masters?

Yes, but in lower numbers than last year . The main problem for LIV golfers is that tournaments on the breakaway circuit do not offer world ranking points, which are the route by which most players qualify for the Masters (see above). 

The LIV golfers who will be at the 2024 Masters are Bryson DeChambeau (because he won the 2020 US Open), Cam Smith (who won the 2023 Open Championship), Brooks Koepka (who won the PGA Championship in 2019), Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Charl Schwartzel, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson (who are all previous Masters champions), Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Meronk (who were in the world’s top 50 earlier this year) and Joaquin Niemann (who received a special invitation ).

Will Tiger Woods be playing?

Yep. The five-time champion turned up at Augusta to start practising on Sunday and played an earlier practice round over the Easter weekend. 

Woods continues to recover from the 2021 car crash that almost cost his right leg but his withdrawal from the second round of the LA Open in February – his first official event in 10 months – led to doubts he would appear at the season’s first major.

How do you get tickets for the masters.

If you want at ticket for this year’s tournament, you are well out of time. Tickets go on sale the previous year, and the application deadline expires in June. Tickets are allocated by ballot, with applicants told in July whether they have been successful.  

A ticket for one of the three days of practice costs $100 (£78.00) . A ticket for one of the tournament days is $140 (£110).
