FAQ About Travel Insurance to Bermuda

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Bermuda. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Bermuda can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Do I Need Travel Insurance for Bermuda?

As of early 2023 , travelers to Bermuda must have insurance that covers COVID-19 or must be prepared to cover all health and accommodation costs should they need to quarantine. Many insurance plans will include COVID-19 in their medical coverage, but always check with your insurance provider to ensure you are appropriately covered.

Remember, also, that travel insurance can do more for you than cover your medical costs. Having a solid policy will let you claim reimbursements should you face any delays or interruptions on your journey. Travel insurance will also allow you to cancel your trip and claim back any non-refundable deposits, which could save you a lot of money.

Almost all travel insurance companies have several additional coverages they can add to their plans. You get to pick what you want, but each add-on comes with an additional price tag. The following sections give an overview of the different options you can consider for your trip to Bermuda.

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancellation coverage allows you to get back the money you pre-paid for your trip. This rider always comes with specific exclusions. Some are standard, others are specific to a particular carrier. Exclusions are reasons why the insurer would decline a claim.

To avoid that, you can pick a cancel for any reason coverage (CFAR) rider. This will allow you to cancel your trip for reasons outside of the standard terms and conditions in your insurance plan and is a great choice for travelers who want more robust coverage.

CFAR coverage also has certain limitations. The details of these limitations will be different across insurance companies, but travelers should expect:

  • Less than 100% of the insured trip costs in their reimbursement package
  • A time limit on when CFAR can be purchased
  • State-of-residence requirements

The state-of-residence requirements matter because all forms of insurance are regulated at the state level, and states have different laws in place, including for travel.

Gear Theft Protection

If you take expensive equipment and valuables on vacation, gear theft protection is a great option. This specific protection covers the cost of expensive gear should it get stolen. This is particularly useful for items like cameras, laptops and sports equipment, all of which could be expensive to replace.

Gear theft protection is a great benefit, but it may not provide adequate coverage for multiple items. Most policies include a combined maximum for items like jewelry, which can be as low as $500.

If you want to take specific items with you on vacation, consider taking out a policy for each item to make sure it’s protected for your vacation. You may also have coverage from your credit card or homeowners insurance, so it’s smart to check this before you buy additional coverage.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

Medical emergency insurance is an element of travel insurance that will cover the costs of medical treatment you receive on your vacation. It is also commonly called travel medical insurance and travel health insurance.

The protection extends to most emergency medical care, but there will be some exclusions in your policy. Your travel health insurance will cover you for medical expenses like:

  • Emergency medical transport
  • Hospitalization
  • Emergency treatments and surgeries
  • Prescriptions

Alongside medical emergency insurance, travel insurance plans have coverage for emergency medical evacuations . This is often referred to as medical repatriation, and it means returning you to your home country for medical care. Coverage for medical repatriation costs much more because it includes transportation costs.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

No one wants to cancel a vacation, but unforeseen events can change travel plans at a moment’s notice. Fortunately, trip cancellation insurance allows you to get back any non-refundable trip deposits, such as for flights and accommodations, if you must cancel your trip.

Cancellation insurance usually covers 100% of your insured trip cost. Cancellation insurance is also subject to exclusions, so your insurance provider may not honor all reasons for canceling.

Check the terms and conditions of your insurance plan, but some common reasons for canceling include:

  • Military or jury service
  • Death of a traveling companion or family member
  • Natural disasters that make your journey impossible
  • A sudden illness that will severely impact your travel

How Much Does Bermuda Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can change based on multiple factors, such as a traveler’s age, destination and length of the vacation. Some insurers may offer cheaper insurance plans , but these may not have appropriate coverage for your trip.

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to Bermuda. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to Bermuda for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

The plans above are all the lowest level of coverage that the companies offer, yet their costs range from $34 to $60. All the plans include 100% cancellation coverage and up to $500 for lost or stolen baggage.

The significant differences are between medical coverage and emergency evacuation. USI Affinity provides the highest premium at $50,000, which is much more than the other plans. Allianz is the only plan to offer $50,000 for emergency medical evacuation, the lowest out of all the policies.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for Bermuda?

Before you buy travel insurance, compare price quotes from multiple insurance providers. Doing this will help you get the best plan for the best price. Most insurance companies will have an online quote calculator that can show you the expected cost of your insurance plan based on your trip and personal details.

You can buy travel insurance online or if you book your trip with a travel agent, who can help you navigate various insurance plans. If you’re concerned about the cost of travel insurance, there are providers who offer cheaper insurance plans , but they may have less coverage.

Bermuda Safety Tips

Bermuda is a safe travel destination with low crime rates. Travel advisories don’t list any causes for concern related to crime on the island, but travelers should be mindful of the hurricane season between June and November.

Among travelers, safety is almost always the No. 1 concern, no matter the destination.

Crime and Safety

Bermuda has a low rate of violent crime. Petty crimes like pickpocketing and mugging are also uncommon, but they’re not unheard of. Visitors should remain cautious when in Hamilton and avoid going out late at night.

Another cause for concern is local taxi drivers, since  there’s little regulation of the industry on the island. Most travelers encounter no issues, but this is important to be aware of.

The Bermuda Police have a list of helpful tips for tourists that you should read before your trip.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

Bermuda has a variety of day trips and tours to fill up a vacation. For culture fans, the Bermuda National Gallery offers an exciting opportunity to discover artworks from the 1600s. For those seeking adventure, tours of the crystal caves and shipwreck diving are excellent options for a day out.

The main cause of concern for Bermuda excursions is adverse weather. Hurricanes are unlikely but also unpredictable. If you’re planning any boating or diving trips, this is especially important. The best advice is to always check the weather forecast before embarking on any days out or tours, as these could be massively impacted by a storm.

Because the pandemic is no longer a global health emergency, the Bermudian government has removed all entry requirements related to COVID-19. This means that you don’t have to provide vaccination details to enter the country.

Travelers should still be mindful of COVID-19, be sure to isolate yourself if you feel unwell, and wear a face covering if needed.

More information can be found on the Bermudian government website .

The Bottom Line: Is Travel Insurance for a Bermuda Vacation Worth It?

A vacation in Bermuda has everything you could want for a Caribbean getaway. Having travel insurance is part of the visa application process , but even so, it is definitely worth having .

All trips can face travel delays and disruptions, especially in Bermuda where hurricanes can impact travel. Having good travel insurance provides a useful safety net should you encounter problems, and it could get you your money back from a trip not taken or cut short.

More information about travel insurance for Bermuda can be found in the FAQs below.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance in Bermuda

Can i claim compensation for canceled flights.

You can claim compensation if your flight is canceled. The airline may book you onto the next available flight initially, but you can claim any expenses resulting from the delay on your travel insurance.

Can I purchase insurance after booking a flight?

You should always purchase travel insurance after you have made all necessary payments for your vacation. This is so you can insure your trip costs.

You can also buy travel insurance once you have already departed on your vacation. This is helpful when you need to extend your trip and still want to be covered by your insurance.

Is it mandatory to travel with travel insurance?

Not all countries require tourists to have travel insurance. Bermuda currently requires visitors to at least have COVID-19 coverage in their insurance, or be able to foot the bill for quarantining if necessary. Even when it’s not required, having a travel insurance plan is recommended.

Will my travel insurance cover me if I get coronavirus?

Most plans will include COVID-19 in their medical and interruption coverage, although this is not always the case. Check the details of your insurance plan carefully. If you’re not covered, you may be able to purchase additional protection that includes COVID-19.

Is travel insurance required to enter Bermuda?

All that is needed to enter Bermuda is a valid passport and the Bermuda Arrival Card , which can be completed online. Travel insurance is no longer required.

Why should you buy travel insurance to visit Bermuda?

Your primary health care plan may not cover you away from your home country; therefore, we recommend travel insurance with emergency medical coverage when traveling internationally. Trawick International offers numerous travel medical insurance and trip cancellation insurance plans.  We recommend purchasing a trip cancellation policy that provides Cancel for any Reason Benefit (CFAR) for added protection.

Do the trip cancellation plans from Trawick International cover COVID-19?

Yes, most of our travel medical and trip cancellation plans treat COVID-19 like any other sickness.

Optional Cancel for Any Reason coverage:

On select trip cancellation plans, Trawick International offers Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) . CFAR provides reimbursement for 75% of the prepaid, nonrefundable, forfeited payments you paid for your trip if you cancel your trip for any reason not otherwise covered by this policy - like border closures or travel bans - at least 48 hours before you are due to depart.  This coverage MUST be purchased with the initial policy and within 21 days of the initial trip deposit date, and the full, nonrefundable trip cost is insured. (This benefit is not available in every state).

How much does travel insurance cost?

Depending on your age, trip cost, length of trip, and other factors will determine the cost of your travel insurance policy.  To obtain the most cost-effective, inclusive, and customized trip cancellation plan, make sure to include all non-refundable travel expenses so you can recover the investment if your trip is canceled or interrupted.

When should you buy travel insurance?

To obtain the best value and have the most benefits possible, we recommend you purchase travel insurance 21 days before the initial trip deposit date and include all prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs. You can still purchase travel insurance after 21 days, but you may not be eligible for time-sensitive benefits such as CFAR or Financial Default.  Don’t miss out on the CFAR benefit if it’s eligible in your state.

PLEASE NOTE: Guidelines may have changed since this was published. Before traveling, you should always check your destination's COVID-19 situation and travel requirements. Countries may have their own entry and exit requirements. Additionally, always check for travel advisories in the area to which you are traveling. Refer to https://www.cdc.gov/ and https://travel.state.gov/content/travel.html for up-to-date information and guidelines.

ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING SECTION CAREFULLY BECAUSE IT REQUIRES YOU TO ARBITRATE CERTAIN DISPUTES AND CLAIMS AND LIMITS THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU CAN SEEK RELIEF FROM COMPANY. Excluding claims for injunctive or other equitable relief, for all other claims related to the Website, including any goods or services purchased through the Website, any dispute or controversy arising out of or relating to this Agreement, including without limitation, any and all disputes, claims (whether in tort, contract, statutory or otherwise) or disagreements concerning the existence, breach, interpretation, application or termination of this Agreement shall be resolved by final and binding arbitration pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act and in accordance with the JAMS Inc. Comprehensive Arbitration Rules & Procedures then in effect. There shall be no right or authority for any claims to be arbitrated on a class action basis. The arbitration shall take place in Fairhope, Alabama or at the option of the party seeking relief, by telephone, online, or via written submissions alone; however such election shall not prohibit Company from attending such an arbitration in person. Said arbitration shall be administered by JAMS. The arbitral tribunal (“Tribunal”) shall be composed of one arbitrator, who shall be independent and impartial. If the parties fail to agree on the arbitrator within twenty (20) calendar days after the initiation of an arbitration hereunder, JAMS shall appoint the arbitrator. The arbitration shall be conducted in the English language. The decision of the arbitrator will be final and binding on the parties, subject to all rights of appeal allowed by JAMS. Judgment on any award(s) rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. The arbitrator shall have the authority to determine arbitrability of any disputes arising out of or relating to this Agreement. Nothing in this Section shall prevent either party from seeking immediate injunctive relief from any court of competent jurisdiction, and any such request shall not be deemed incompatible with the agreement to arbitrate or a waiver of the right to arbitrate. The parties undertake to keep confidential all awards in their arbitration, together with all confidential information, all materials in the proceedings created for the purpose of the arbitration and all other documents produced by the other party in the proceedings and not otherwise in the public domain, save and to the extent that disclosure may be required of a party by legal duty, to protect or pursue a legal right or to enforce or challenge an award in legal proceedings before a court or other judicial authority. The arbitrator shall award all fees and expenses, including reasonable attorney’s fees, to the prevailing party. Any judgment rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.

You may choose to opt out of the agreement to arbitrate by mailing a written opt-out notice (“Notice”) to Company. The Notice must be postmarked no later than thirty (30) days after the date you accept these T&C for the first time. The Notice must be mailed to: Trawick International, Inc., Post Office Box 2284 Fairhope, Alabama USA 36533, to the attention of General Counsel. This procedure is the only mechanism by which you can opt out of the agreement to arbitrate. Opting out of the agreement to arbitrate has no effect on any other parts of this Agreement, or any previous or future arbitration agreements that you have entered into with Company or its affiliates.

Horseshoe bay.

Horseshoe Bay Beach is arguably one of the best beaches in the world. It is located in Bermuda’s Southampton Parish on the South Shore. Horseshoe Bay Beach, is a crescent-shaped, pink-sand beach next to large rock formations.

The beach is a major attraction to tourists. The peak season ranges from May through September and during this time, expect to find the beach crowded, and lifeguards being on watch. To avoid the crowds, you can go for a swim or a walk early in the morning during high season. Beach trails connect to adjacent beaches at  Chaplins Bay, Stonehole Bay, Jobsons Cove, and  Warwick Long Bay.

The city of Hamilton is the capital of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda. The island offers a cosmopolitan and energetic vibe and creates a beautiful picture with its colourful houses overlooking the harbor.

Hamilton is the cultural and commercial heartbeat of the island and features excellent dining, shopping, and many museums and galleries. During the summer, the street turns lively on Wednesdays for the weekly Harbor Nights festival, featuring Gombey dancers and street food. The city however also features buildings dating from the 1800s, like the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the Bermuda Capital Building.

St. George’s Town

St. George’s Town , located on the East End of the island of Bermuda is the oldest continuously-inhabited British town in the New World (from 1612). For that reason, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Parts of Bermuda’s history can be experienced at some of its museums (i.e., Bermuda National Museum Trust, St. George Historical Society Museum, etc.) St. George’s most popular highlight is Tobacco Bay Beach. It was names for the wild tobacco that was found when the early settlers arrived. Even though it no longer has any nicotine plants growing, it provides a unique Bermuda beach experience – clear waters, limestone rock formations, ideal for snorkeling and swimming.

At American Visitor Insurance, we aim to provide travelers with the most suitable Covid travel insurance plan to ease the financial risks of international travel with insurance comparison tool .

The search can be then tapered down to the most specific plans as per your requirements with the coverage for Covid illness which are competitive and affordable plans. Covid19 travel insurance for US citizens staying in UK and visiting US can buy Diplomat America insurance and INF insurance.

International cruisers to Bermuda

Cruise travelers who are unvaccinated are required to take a COVID19 test no more than two days before departing the port. This practices has been in force and cruise lines are aware of this as Bermuda already needs additional testing for vaccinated travelers when the journey to Bermuda is longer than four days. Depending on the time for travel to Bermuda, cruisers may need to test for COVID again before disembarking in Bermuda.

Importance of the best travel insurance for cruises

Going on a cruise vacation is truly exciting, however one must take precautions to ensure that the cruise vacation is not a disappointment. Vacationers are likely to pay for the cruise well in advance of the actual travel date, and it is possible that one is not able to travel on the cruise as initially planned.

While most cruises companies offers some cruise protection it does not provide the coverage benefits as provided by trip insurance for cruises. While cruise companies protection usually gives cruise vouchers to vacationers if they miss the cruise, cruise travel insurance provides significantly more benefits such as coverage for trip cancellation, trip delay, baggage loss, baggage delay, medical evacuation and medical insurance for the traveler. Vacationers can further shield themselves by adding Cancel for any reason travel insurance benefit which gives flexibility of cancelling the cruise vacation for any reason, and still get reimbursed up to 75% of non-refundable trip expenses.

Cruise Travel Insurance protection timelines

Going on a cruise vacation can be an expensive and a simple delay or missing a flight can spoil the entire vacation. Given the constant changes in the weather conditions, delays with airline and airport chaos, factors like covid pandemic in famous cruise destinations, travelers should have good Cruise travel insurance to protect the money spent on the cruise.

Cruise travel insurance provides coverage well before the start of the cruise, continues with the coverage during the cruise at Sea till the Cruise journey is completed. Given below are the coverage details at different stages of the Cruise.

Cruise insurance protection before the commencement of the Cruise

Cruise insurance offers protection against the traveler’s monetary investment on the cruise from the time the cruise travel insurance has been purchased and the initial booking for the Cruise has been made. The cruise insurance will reimburse the trip expenses if anything goes wrong before the start of the trip. If the travelers are unable to reach their cruise or got delayed for some covered reason like illness or bad weather then the trip expenses can be reimbursed.

Cruise insurance will reimburse all of the trip expenses under the Trip Cancellation cover if the cruiser is not able to reach the cruise in time for any covered reason. Covered reasons like bad weather, illness, injury, or death can be insured. If the insurance includes Cancel for any reason, then the traveler can simply decide not to take the cruise and still get reimbursed up to 75% of the non-refundable cruise expenses.

Cruise insurance coverage during the journey

Many cruisers are not aware of the high healthcare cost on a cruise ship. The basic diagnosis and treatment of regular health conditions can cost thousands of dollars on board a cruise ship. In case the passenger has to be evacuated to the nearest port the cost of evacuation can be astronomical. Cruise insurance offers travelers medical insurance coverage for unanticipated illness or injury during the cruise.

Most policies offer benefits for on-board medical treatment, as well as additional coverage for an evacuation in case of an emergency. Cruisers whose primary domestic health insurance does not offer coverage outside of the US borders or to any inaccessible locations should choose comprehensive cruise insurance.

Vacationers who are concerned about the medical emergency that can arise while on the cruise should choose to buy a comprehensive cruise insurance policy that covers Emergency Medical treatment and Medical Evacuation. There are also a few Cruise travel insurance plans that offer coverage for acute onset of Pre-existing conditions.

Cruise insurance for bad weather conditions like a hurricane

Most of the vacationers plan for a cruise trip during the summer which ironically is the hurricane season. This makes cruising risky as it is exposed to cancellations due to bad weather conditions. Cruise travel insurance offers coverage for Hurricane & adverse weather, where cruisers can reimburse the cost of the trip in case the trip gets cancelled due to extreme weather, a storm at their destination or any delays due to weather.

Following are some Cruise health insurance plans

Bermuda Tourism

Let's Explore Bermuda

Put Travel Insurance on Your Bermuda Trip Checklist

Deciding to vacation to Bermuda isn’t difficult. The island is beautiful, with its pink beaches and great weather. Nearly everyone speaks English, and the traditional foods include great ingredients such as bananas, beans, fish and brandy or wine.  When you need a break from the beach, there are attractions such as the Crystal & Fantasy Caves, the Bermuda Aquarium, Natural History Museum and Zoo, and the Bermuda Maritime Museum.

Plus, it’s not a long trip from most East Coast locations. That means it is accessible not only by plane or cruise ship – and those are great ways to get there – but also by private yacht.

But as you check items off your Bermuda vacation to-do list, make sure you haven’t forgotten a couple of important ones. Everyone remembers prescriptions and trip itineraries. But there are some arrangements that could have slipped your mind.

For example, remember that the island, despite that proximity to the U.S., is considered a foreign country. That means, first off, that you’ll a passport. In addition, have you thought about letting your bank and your credit card companies know that you’ll be out of the country for a few days? If not, you face the possibility of having your accounts frozen when you need them the most.

Another important matter to take care of before you leave home on that trip is travel insurance. It might not sound exciting, but it can save you a pile of money and be a literal lifesaver. This is particularly important if you’re taking a commercial flight or cruise to Bermuda.

Table of Contents

Picking the right travel insurance

However, make sure you have the right travel insurance. The best policies offer several types of protection, including trip cancellation. This is the coverage you need if you become ill or there is a natural disaster in the country you’re visiting. You also should make sure you have flight delay coverage. Your provider will cover hotel costs and make new travel plans on your behalf under this coverage.

You should also make sure you are protected for baggage loss or theft. Otherwise, you could wind up stuck in Bermuda with no clothes, no prescriptions and maybe even no identification. That can mean paradise lost, too. A good travel insurance policy can help with all that. It can also help if you lose your passport or other travel documents or money.

Insurance is Protection

But possibly the biggest reason  to get travel insurance is to give yourself protection in case you become ill or injured in a foreign company. What could happen? Say you get in a wreck when you’re traveling the island in search of some of its unique animals, such as tree frogs, sea turtles and tropical birds. Your health insurance – including Medicare – likely won’t pay for medical care overseas, which could cost thousands. In addition, hospitals in some countries want payment up front. A good travel health insurance policy, regardless of whether your destination is Bermuda or somewhere else, also will pay to evacuate you if you need specialized care, again saving you thousands of dollars.

The best reason to buy travel insurance is to make sure that you enjoy the beaches and calypso music and everything else that Bermuda offers to its guests. Purchasing a good travel insurance policy will help make sure you have the opportunity to cash in on golf, scuba diving and all the other activities that are available.

The cost? It’s likely lower than you think. Coverage will run between 4% and 8% of the total price of your vacation. The more important question might be this: How much could it cost you NOT to have travel insurance?

Do I need travel insurance for my summer vacation? It's complicated.

  • Travel insurance can be complicated, but it's worth it if you have travel expenses that insurance would cover.
  • You might not need travel insurance if you're taking a driving vacation and staying in a place where lodging is free.
  • If you're leaving the country, you'll likely need travel insurance.

Chances are, so have you.

Why finding the right travel insurance is so hard

Most surveys suggest this will be a record summer for travel. How much of a record? Demand is so high that some airlines are afraid they will run out of planes. Now that's busy.

At the same time, danger and uncertainty are lurking everywhere – wars in Europe and the Middle East, the usual slate of natural disasters like hurricanes and maybe a volcano or two. It's no wonder people are giving some serious thought to insurance.

Older travelers are particularly worried. And they should be, said PK Rao, CEO of INF Visitor Care . Claims by travelers over age 50 spike during the summer months.

Warning: American tourists are being profiled. Don't be one of them.

Try this pro trick for an affordable and stress-free summer vacation

"According to our claim data, medical emergencies tend to uptick during the summer, especially for those going on trips that involve outdoor activities," he said.

But there are so many choices out there, including credit card coverage, medical evacuation membership programs and stand-alone travel insurance. What should you get?

You need peace of mind

But don't just reflexively start shopping for a travel insurance policy this summer. Instead, look for peace of mind – knowing that if something goes wrong, you'll be taken care of.

"Knowing you're protected from unforeseen travel mishaps – like delays, lost baggage and even medical emergencies – can make the trip that much more enjoyable,” said Daniel Durazo, a spokesman for Allianz Partners USA .

As it turns out, there are several ways to get the peace of mind you need. And there are times when you can safely skip travel insurance.

This is when you don't need insurance

Here's when you can skip travel insurance, according to experts:

â—Ÿ If you already have coverage. "You may already have travel coverage through your benefits at work, your credit card, or through group benefits with an organization," said Jiten Puri, CEO of PolicyAdvisor.com. If you do, there's no need to buy more coverage. You're all set.

â—Ÿ If you're not traveling far. If you're taking a driving vacation and staying in a place where lodging is free, like a relative's sofa, then there's not much to insure. "If you already have health insurance, it may cover you for a domestic trip, so you don't need to think about health insurance coverage," said Joe Cronin, CEO of International Citizens Insurance .

â—Ÿ If your trip isn't insurable. Traditional travel insurance covers conventional trips with prepaid, nonrefundable components like airline tickets and hotel stays. You might find that you either already have coverage through your medical insurance, or the trip is essentially uninsurable.

So think twice before saying "yes" to optional travel insurance that your online travel agency may offer you when you're booking a trip. You might not need it.

Here's when you need travel insurance

But most travelers should consider some kind of travel insurance coverage this summer. Here's when you need the extra coverage:

â—Ÿ If you have travel expenses that insurance would cover. "If you have many prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, it's best to take out travel insurance," said Lauren Gumport, a spokeswoman for Faye Travel Insurance ."This includes things like flights, hotel rooms, tickets and activities." The more conventional your vacation, the likelier travel insurance is to cover almost every aspect of your summer vacation.

â—Ÿ If you're leaving the country. "Your regular medical insurance might not extend coverage beyond your home borders," said John Rose, chief risk and security officer at ALTOUR . Also, many countries require travel insurance for entrance. They include Bermuda, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and some European countries.

â—Ÿ If you can't afford to lose your trip. "When considering travel insurance for your summer trip, evaluate whether you can afford to lose your vacation investment due to unforeseen circumstances like illness, weather disruptions, or emergencies," explained Robert Gallagher, president of the US Travel Insurance Association (USTIA). "Can you afford the financial risk if you miss your cruise departure because of covered flight delays? What if you have to cut your trip short because of illness?"

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is assuming their credit card will cover them. For example, I found that my credit card only covered my rental car as secondary insurance, which made it completely useless when I rented a car in Tampa recently. I had to buy a standalone policy from Allianz to cover the vehicle.

Should you repeat your vacation? Let's settle this once and for all.

Junk fees: Travelers are drowning in junk fees during the summer of surcharges

How one traveler insured his summer vacation

So, how did Hopkins handle his travel insurance needs? Well, as I mentioned – it's complicated.

Hopkins said he always buys some travel insurance before he takes a trip, "but how much, and what I cover, varies," he explained.

He decided that his path to peace of mind in this case was to spend a few extra dollars: He made fully refundable flight and hotel reservations, just in case something went wrong. That would eliminate a lengthy claim with his travel insurance company or credit card.

But he still needed at least $50,000 in medical coverage with emergency evacuation because of his active schedule.

"We’re going to be doing a lot of hiking in Iceland," he said. "And you just never know."

At the beginning of the year, he decided to buy an annual Medjet Horizon plan, a membership that would get him from a hospital in Portugal or Iceland to a hospital at home, in case something happened.

For insurance, Hopkins checked TravelInsurance.com to find an affordable travel insurance policy. He found coverage through Trawick International that pays up to $50,000 in medical expenses and up to $200,000 for an evacuation.

"I’ve heard good things about them," he said. "Hopefully, we won’t need any of it."

How do I insure my trips?

I'm on the road about 360 days a year, so I'm always thinking about peace of mind. I currently use a Wells Fargo credit card with lots of travel benefits, and I have long-term policies through Faye and Cigna, which have worked fairly well. I also am a long-time Medjet Horizon member. If I rent a car, I turn to Allianz for my primary coverage.

I know – that's a lot of peace of mind.

But I've also run into trouble and had to use many of those benefits. Medjet got me back home during the pandemic. Cigna covered me after a serious ski accident in Switzerland. My old Allianz policy took care of my medical expenses when I had to see a doctor in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a few years ago.

Like I always say, when it comes to having enough insurance, better safe than sorry.

Travel Insurance provided through a third-party travel insurance provider can be a more effective way to make sure your trip investment as a whole is protected, regardless of where you book your flights, cruise, or other activities.

When planning your next trip, you are likely to be asked somewhere throughout the checkout process if you would like to add travel insurance—whether it be when booking a flight, cruise, hotel, or other travel expenditure. While your first thought might be to just “check the box” conveniently provided before you complete your booking, is this the best way to make sure you and your trip investment are protected from the unexpected?

Cruise Add-On Travel Insurance

Cruise providers often give you the option to add travel insurance when booking your trip, but it’s important to keep in mind that the insurance being offered may only cover select aspects of your cruise. If you’ve made other prepaid, non-refundable purchases for your trip, such as flights or excursions through another supplier, the travel insurance from the cruise line may not provide the coverage you need.

Airline Add-On Travel Insurance

While airline add-on insurance may provide coverage for the cost of the airline ticket you purchased, it may not cover additional costs that arise if your flight is delayed or cancelled, such as prepaid hotel costs for the night you missed or additional flight costs to catch you up with your cruise. If your only out-of-pocket expense is an airline ticket, your airline’s travel insurance might be the right plan for you—just be sure to review the plan details and exclusions.

Other Add-On Travel Insurance

Several other travel suppliers or tour operators may provide add-on travel insurance during the checkout process, such as hotels, rental cars, or even event tickets. Often, travel insurance offered by vacation rental sites, resorts, and booking engines provide coverage only for costs associated with that particular booking/purchase and won’t provide coverage for other prepaid, non-refundable costs you have made related to your trip. No matter where you buy your travel insurance, always read the fine print and review the policies carefully.

Third-Party Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance provided through a third-party travel insurance provider, such as IMG, can be a more effective way to make sure your trip investment as a whole is protected, regardless of where you book your flights, cruise, or other activities.

IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel SE and iTravelInsured Travel LX plans are both great options for either domestic or international destinations. These plans provide the coverage you need for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs and specifically include benefits related to trip cancellation, trip delay, lost baggage, and much more. Plus, these plans provide emergency medical expense coverage for unexpected illnesses and accidents—especially important when traveling outside the U.S.

All IMG plans also include 24/7/365 access to non-insurance travel assistance services that can provide emergency travel arrangements, medical referrals, lost passport assistance, and more.

Travel insurance needs are very personal: Here's what to know in case your plans go south

Q: My dear friend recently suffered a fall while visiting her family. She ended up in an out-of-town facility for several weeks and then required custom evacuation services to return home. For the first time, I’m strongly considering travel insurance; what do I need to know?

A: I’m so sorry to hear that your friend had such an unexpected and stressful experience. Like all insurances, the desire to pay for a policy that shares risk when traveling is a very personal decision. Let’s review the coverages offered and try to narrow in on your priorities.

Where are you going, and do you want to pay for evacuation coverage that will bring you back to the U.S. for treatment? When there is a serious illness or injury and medical treatment is required, a travel insurance policy with solid medical coverage can cover the cost of emergency treatment, hospitalization and medication. A couple months ago, another good friend became ill while on riverboat vacation in Paris and she didn’t have travel insurance. The complete cost of her testing, diagnosis and treatment was only $300.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

An emergency evacuation may be covered during a natural disaster, political unrest or a medical emergency.

Recently a young couple was walking the Camino Trail and staying in hostels. When he contracted COVID, the hostels made them leave so they could protect the safety of their other guests. Too sick to travel home, the young couple had to pay for an expensive hotel in Spain.

More: I'm leaving my corporate job to be a brewmaster: What's the best way to tap into savings?

Is trip delay, cancellation and interruption your priority? While delays are more common in less developed parts of the world and rebooking air can be expensive, travel disruption takes many forms. Civil conflict, terrorist attacks, epidemics, natural disasters and economic unrest are all acceptable reasons to rearrange schedules and accommodations. Some carriers have an emergency team of experts staffed by Army Rangers, Navy Seals and Air Force Pararescue. These coverages provide peace of mind wherever you’re going.

Still checking luggage? After personally spending three days in Africa without my clothes, I learned that lost or delayed baggage can seriously impact a vacation. Most travel insurance plans include lost luggage coverage for clothing and other essential items.

How about losing your backpack, purse or wallet? These items often include expensive electronics and essential identification. The travel insurance representative may be able to guide you through the maze of replacing government-issued documents necessary for returning home. Don’t carry too much cash; it’s rarely reimbursable.

Are you planning to rent a vehicle overseas? Check your auto insurer before you go to find out what’s covered. Ask the rental company overseas to find out if there are any age limitations. Some countries have extra rules for renters above age 75, and many impose a fee or require the purchase of overpriced insurance similar to the “under 25” fee in the U.S. And then there are the countries that want documented proof of suitability, which can vary by location.

Do your research. There are several good websites where searching for a plan narrows the focus into specific goals. Consider these questions:

  • Is this just for one trip? Or are you traveling many times this year and want a multi-trip plan?
  • Do you want a basic plan or prefer to have extensive coverage that includes a multitude of situations and many more benefits?
  • Is trip interruption or cancellation a priority?
  • Is emergency medical a top priority? What about evacuation back to the US?
  • Do you want to cover delayed or lost baggage?

Most travel insurance reimburses covered financial losses and requires that a claim be filed and approved, and the loss must be proven. Pricier plans may pay expenses upfront or pay a fixed payment of around $100 per day. The travel insurance plan that you choose can be based on your priorities. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Safe travels!

Travel + Leisure Readers' 25 Favorite Resorts in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas of 2023

Travel + Leisure readers voted these as their favorite sunny island resorts in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

The Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas boast some of the world's most pristine beaches, with crystal-clear water and tropical temperatures. Whether it's the soft beaches of the Bahamas or the lush rainforests in Dominica, these islands have something for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts, for example, can immerse themselves in activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, zip lining, and sailing. But the islands are also known for their rich history and vibrant culture, which is reflected in their colorful architecture, culinary offerings, and music scene.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Readers showed their love for St. Lucia this year, with five properties making the top 25 list, followed by Turks and Caicos with four resorts. In fact, this year's runner-up is Cap Maison Resort & Spa in St. Lucia, which rose the ranks from No. 7 last year. This property has views, villas, and private pools — but it's a dream for food lovers. Think fine-dining venues with panoramic views, pop-up dinners with visiting chefs, and wine tastings at this all-inclusive resort.

No. 4 Kamalame Cay on the Bahamas' Andros Island has an overwater spa, which one T+L reader said was “the best part of the trip.” Aruba’s Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort (No. 7) — a T+L reader calls it “heaven on Earth” — offers a multitude of tours, like a guided walk of Aruba’s downtown, a food tour visiting locals' favorite restaurants, or even a closer look at Aruba’s 160-year history of aloe farming. And Ambergris Cay in Turks and Caicos (No. 5) offers a guided whale-watching tour with a marine biologist.

The No. 1 spot this year went to the Dominica resort that won last year, too: Secret Bay. Read on to learn why this Dominica enclave continues to top the list.

Secret Bay: Portsmouth, Dominica

Tucked in the Eastern Caribbean Sea is the island nation of Dominica, which was also named the best island in the Caribbean by T+L readers this year. On the eastern side of the island is an all-villa hotel called Secret Bay. “I would recommend Secret Bay for everybody wanting a home away from their home,” one T+L reader said. Another fan summed up the property in two simple words: “absolutely excellent.” The secluded clifftop villas each come with their own butler, indoor and outdoor living spaces, private plunge pool, gourmet kitchen (with a private chef), and covered terrace with sea views. Guests can indulge in outdoor activities like snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, and kayaking; cultural experiences like a cooking class; or self-care experiences like yoga and a massage at the on-site wellness pavilion.
