Day 5: through the restricted diamond area to lüderitz ~ 240 km (3.5h).

Continue to Aus. The Bahnhof Hotel is highly recommended for a refreshment stop. Afterwards you will drive through the diamond restricted area to the Atlantic coast to Lüderitz. On the way, with a little luck, you can observe the Namib Wild Horses at Garup. Lüderitz , the birthplace of old South West Africa, almost sinks into slumber with its leisureliness. The houses were built around the bay on the bare rock and often cooling coastal fog lies over the small town.

  • Breakfast, Accommodation
  • Comfort: Alte Villa
  • Luxury: Nest Hotel
  • Accommodation
  • Guesthouse: Kairos Cottage

Day 6: Lüderitz ~ 0 km

Today you have a day at leisure in Lüderitz and surroundings. In the morning you can visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop and in the afternoon you can take a bay tour to Diaz Cross. A stroll through the town with a visit to the rock church is also a must! From up here you have a beautiful view over the town all the way over to Shark Island. Next door is the Goerkehaus, the most beautiful art nouveau building in Lüderitz.

If you would like to get to know the Diamond Barrier Area more intensively, then you should definitely book the day trip to Bogenfels (bowed rock). This must be done in time.

Day 7: via rosh pinah to the orange river ~ 400 km (4h).

If you participated in the excursion to the Bogenfels yesterday, then today you can visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop before continuing your journey. Then return to Aus and continue to the mining village of Rosh Pinah. Here, a visit to the Geo Center is an experience for any mineral lover. The director, Gisela Hinder, was employed by the mining company as a geologist for many years and knows every stone in the area.

After travelling through the barren landscape of the Karoo, today you will reach the Orange River, the border river to South Africa and a green oasis - an unusual sight after days of travelling through dry land. A scenic road runs along the shore, on which you will reach the settlement of Aussenkehr and its huge cultivation area of table grapes.

  • Comfort / Luxury: Norotshama River Resort
  • Camping:  Norotshama River Resort

Day 8: Orange River & Wine Growing Area ~ 0 km

The day is free to explore the area. You can take a side trip to King's Thrown Canyon (a permit is required for this). Various activities are offered such as fishing, canoeing & river rafting, hiking, climbing and guided four-wheel drives.

We recommend to do an unguided half-day canoe tour on the picturesque Orange River, organized by  Amanzi Trails . The Orange River is one of the view rivers in Namibia, which does not have crocodiles nor hippos. The canoe tour is hence not dangerous and meanders through the breath-taking gorges of the South African / Namibia border area. Thera are lots of swimming possibilities.

Travel information / FAQs

Namibia is a safe country to travel in and with its good infrastructure it is ideal for self-drive safaris. Especially those, who like to get an individual impression of the country a tour in a rented vehicle is highly recommendable. You’ll have the opportunity to learn a lot about the country and people and also to experience a lot off the beaten track.

Here we answer the most important and most frequently asked questions:

Take it easy

To be able to really enjoy your self-drive safari you should be open-minded, serene and patient to a certain extent – in Africa and thus also in Namibia, the clocks often tick a bit differently.

On the other hand, compared to other African countries, Namibia is in many regards nearly European. Not without reason Namibia is seen as the perfect country for introducing novices to the African continent.

Gravel road

With the material and pre-information provided like route descriptions, distances and approximate travelling times you will be well prepared for your safari. However, one should be an experienced driver and should be in the possession of the licence for more than just a couple of weeks. 4x4 experience is not necessary. The tarred and gravel roads are overall in good condition.

The driving routes and distances have been selected in a way that you can have a rather relaxed experience.

Check road signs

In Namibia you don’t need to be scared (just respectful) of spiders, snakes and lions, but rather of overestimating your own driving capabilities. Every car rental company will tell you that the average travelling speed on gravel roads should not exceed 80 km/h and 120 km/h on tarred roads. However, on some gravel roads 80 km/h is already too fast. Take your time – you are on vacation! And please take note of the road signs.

On arrival, when taking over your vehicle you will receive an orientation on driving in Namibia and on road safety. It is essential that you follow the instructions given by the car rental company:

Here some safety guidelines for driving in Namibia in advance:

  • Namibia has left-hand traffic – Please stick to it.
  • Please avoid driving at night!
  • Off the accelerator on gravel roads – maximum 80 km/h. Especially on gravel roads: reduce speed before entering a bend! Also when the road visibility is not clear. Abrupt reduction of speed can lead to losing control of the vehicle and in the worst case “rolling” the car.
  • Only over-take when visibility is 100%.
  • Always lock your rental vehicle and don’t leave valuables visible from outside in an unmonitored car.

Many rental vehicles are equipped with tracking devices. Should you have an accident and the evaluated data shows that you were speeding your insurance will be nil and void.

You need your national driver’s licence in connection with an international licence for driving in Namibia.

Individual accommodation

All accommodations described in the itinerary are known to us and classified as good to excellent (service, cleanliness, location, facilities). Most of them only have a limited number of beds though and when fully booked we have to book alternatives. These changes are subject to availability at the time of booking. When having to book alternative lodges, hotels or B&Bs we always strive to find accommodation of the same quality.

In most of the lodges dinner and breakfast are included in the rates. In towns you have the option to visit restaurants of your choice for dinner, thus only breakfast is included.

The campsites have also been chosen with care. All team members of Info-Namibia are dedicated campers and value good campsites.

In the itinerary of a lodge or lodge/camping safari we have chosen locations where you have access to supplies. Camping vehicles are equipped with a fridge for storing perishables up to five days.

It is always advisable to visit the website of your Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travelling abroad.

Riskmap - Copyright © Control Risks 2019

In general, this can be said: Namibia is a politically stable country. Compared to other African countries the crime rate is very low, however as a tourist (and as any inhabitant) there are certain ground rules to adhere to:

  • Don’t do anything, you wouldn’t do at home. For example, don’t let any stranger assist you when drawing money at an ATM.
  • In town and especially in outskirts you should not travel on foot carrying valuables.
  • Avoid walking around in darkness. In Swakopmund one can make an exception when walking to or from a restaurant in the evenings, but please inform yourself at the reception of your accommodation.
  • Should you want to use a taxi service, please use official taxis (CityCab, etc.) or make use of Leva (Namibia-Uber).

Souvenirs in a himba village

Changing money: At the airport in Windhoek you can exchange foreign cash at the teller or you can draw money at the ATM. This goes for all bigger towns in Namibia. Best ATM when using foreign cards are Nedbank (green) or Standard Bank (blue). Draw or exchange about N$ 5000 per person at the beginning of your tour and try to pay with credit card during the rest of your travel. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted.

Costs for provisions during the safari: As mentioned above, dinner and breakfast are usually included in the lodge tour. Lunch and any missing, additional meals in restaurants can usually be paid with credit card.

On the mixed lodge/camping tour the accommodations and campsites are pre-paid.

Costs for supplies in shops are comparable to Europe or the USA. Eating out in restaurants is normally less expensive than in Europe.

Fuel: A large cost factor are costs for fuel. You can calculate with an average consumption of 10 litres on 100 km. One litre of fuel costs about N$ 12 (dated 07.04.2020). For a 2000 km journey you will need about 200 litres of fuel, which will cost you about N$ 2400.

Souvenirs: You can buy beautiful souvenirs relatively cheap all over the country.  Local producers of jewellery and artefacts benefit from this income.

Gratuities: A 10% gratuity for a good service in restaurants is common in Namibia. For services at fuel stations (re-fuelling, washing the windscreen…) a tip of N$ 5 is a guideline. Many accommodation facilities have a general “tip box”, the content of which gets equally distributed amongst all staff members. Tips are normally given once at the end of the stay and are usually about N$ 50 per person per night. Of course, the amount you want to give as gratuity is at your own discretion.

Visa and entry permit

  • You definitely need a passport which is at least 6 months valid and which has two open pages when entering the country.
  • Most Europeans (as well as US citizens and many others) receive a visa free of charge when entering the country. This visa is valid for the duration of the intended stay (make sure!). The maximum given stay is 90 days.
  • It is your responsibility to inform yourself about the visa regulations that adhere to your nationality before travelling to Namibia.
  • Double check the entry stamp at immigrations on the duration of validity of your visa.
  • Should you be travelling with minor children, please let us know as special documents are needed for that.

Namibia does not prescribe any vaccination, but check with countries where you might be in transit! Malaria is restricted to certain areas of the country. Depending where you want to travel to, we will advise about malaria. As with the visa regulations please always inform yourself at your own Ministry of Foreign Affairs about regulations

Best time to visit namibia.

The best time to visit Namibia depends on what you want to see and do. The dry season (May-September) is considered the best time to explore the Nabim Desert and go on safari as the temperatures are comfortable, vegetation is thin and wildlife congregates around waterholes.

The shoulder months (April and October) may be a better option for a safari without peak season crowds; however, Namibia's national parks and reserves never feel  too  crowded.

While it can be trickier to spot game in the wet season (November-March), you might be lucky to see cute newborns as it coincides with the birthing season.

Culture and customs

Human settlement in Namibia can be traced back to as early as 15000 BC. In the time since, a diverse mix of people and communities have inhabited Namibia, culminating in a unique cultural heritage made of symbolic beliefs, traits, and traditions.

Today, most of the population sits within the larger Aawambo cultural group found mostly in the north of Namibia. Other large cultural groups that make up Namibia are the Nama, Damara, Kavango, and Ovaherero people.

Namibia was colonized by Germany from the late 1800s until 1919. Because of this, Europeans now make up 5 percent of the population. German influences can be seen throughout Namibia by way of cuisine, language, architecture and more. As much as 10 percent of Namibia’s population is made up of people who have migrated from South Africa.

The national language is English, however many Namibians also speak multiple Indigenous languages, such as the Aawambo language.

Eating and drinking

Like many countries, the majority of Namibia’s cuisine stems from the traditional cooking techniques and produce found in the area. In more recent times, immigrating cultures, specifically German and English, have added to the culinary scene. With a large variation of meats to cook with, it’s no surprise that many of the popular dishes feature meat in some way, often accompanied by a strong flavor and paired carbohydrate.

There are plenty of options for non-meat eaters, too. Some must-tries include green asparagus, omboga (dried spinach), Namibian olives, owawa mushrooms, geelrys (rice dish), oshigali (puree beans) and more.

Things to try in Namibia

A staple daily dish to many, mieliepap is a porridge-like meal usually made with cornflour and served with a selection of vegetables or even a meat protein like fish or goat.

A dish cooked in a small iron pot, potjiekos is a stew that typically combines game meat with hearty vegetables like cauliflower, pumpkin, and cabbage.

This dish is of Dutch and Afrikaans origin and serves as a way to store meat. By using a savory rub of flavored spices, salt, and vinegar, then left to air dry, biltong is a tasty snack that can last for a long time if cured correctly.

Namibian oysters are known to be meatier and fast-growing than in other areas of the world. They are likely to be prepared differently depending on where you go.

Fat cakes are a very popular snack in Namibia and other parts of the world. Essentially, fat cakes are just deep-fried dough balls that can be made into sweet or savory dishes. So, it's no wonder they're popular!

Geography and environment

Red desert dunes, rugged bushveld, dense woodlands, and plains of gravel make up Namibia's ancient terrain. Home to the monumental Fish River Canyon and sharing the iconic Kalahari Desert with   South Africa   and   Botswana , Namibia has some of the most interesting landscapes in   Africa , if not the world.

With little arable land and a warm climate, Namibia is prone to prolonged periods of drought, making farming difficult. Bordered by Angola, Botswana, South Africa, and   Zambia , Namibia also has a stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean where visitors can see where the desert meets the sea.

Top 10 places to visit in Namibia

1. fish river canyon.

There's more to the Fish River Canyon than its sheer size. With remote hiking trails, magnificent view points and raging river torrents during the rainy season, visitors will be breathless at the epic views and sense of isolation when visiting this canyon, believed to have been formed more than 500 million years ago.

5. Ship to shore

Namibia's Skeleton Coast has been called 'The Land God Made in Anger' by the San Bushmen and 'The Gates of Hell' by the Portuguese, and it's not hard to see why. With gale-force winds battering the shore, rolling surf, and thick fog, the Skeleton Coast has ruined many a mariner over the years. Evidence of this is scattered along the coastal sands, with a collection of rusting ships resting on the beaches - an eerie yet enthralling sight.

6. Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park might be one of the best places to see some of Africa’s iconic wildlife. With its artificial watering holes and wide clear spaces, it’s likely you’ll grab some stellar snaps of the hard-to-miss inhabitants, including elephants, zebras, and even black rhinos.

Get out your binoculars and get ready to tick off some bird sightings as you visit Walvis Bay on our 10 day Premium Namibia adventure .

10. Orange River

Named the Orange River for its unique hue, this waterway has been an important part of Namibian and South African history – namely, the diamond rush in the 1800s. While diamond mining is a continuing business in the region, many people simply come to enjoy paddling the waters.

Enjoy a day on the water at Orange River while on a 13 day Namibia Discovery tour .

What’s travel without a meaningful souvenir or two? When in Namibia, Intrepid encourages travelers to support local makers who put time and effort into handmaking their wares. Culturally significant items are often available for purchase, especially in tourist areas. Speaking to the local sellers can be a great way to learn about their culture and understand the significance of what they are selling.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Namibia

Many of the beautiful textiles sold around Namibia can be used in a multitude of ways, e.g., for clothing, tableware, art, and more. Look to buy from traditional artists and makers in craft markets to support local talent and local industries.

Wooden crafts

A hand-carved wooden object is a great memento to take home from Namibia. There’s likely a souvenir for everyone with crockery, bowls, animal figures, dolls, instruments, and more. You’ll see traditional African masks for sale, which are often items that have a symbolic meaning to the local people.

Precious gems

As one of the largest producers of diamonds in the world, you’re likely to find a sparkly item or two in Namibia. Be sure to do some research or ask your guide about where to go, as not all shops will have the real deal.

7-day southern namibia safari, description.

We will tour the top sights and breathtaking natural splendor of southern Namibia during our trip. Beginning in Windhoek and finishing with a night spent in the Kalahari savannah. We’ll stop at Canon Park and Fish River Canyon before heading to Aus, Luderitz, Kolmanskop, and the famous Namib wild horses. The journey continues to one of Namibia’s natural highlights, Sossusvlei, before concluding in the beach town of Swakopmund. This old German town, which stretches from the mouth of the Swakop River out into the surrounding desert plain, is thought by the majority of Namibians to be the sole true vacation destination in the African nation. The palm-lined alleys, pristine old buildings, and well-kept gardens give Swakop (as the locals call it), which has a more mild climate than the interior, a distinctive character and make it a nice haven to spend a few days in.

This long-abandoned ghost town, which served as the center of the region’s diamond industry until it was abandoned more than 60 years ago, provides a fascinating window into the region’s heyday. Many of the structures have been left exactly as they were when they were abandoned, and the nearby dunes are now slowly burying them. The village once had 44 children and nearly 300 people living there, along with comforts like a swimming pool, an ice cream parlor, and a bowling alley. Many of the structures are left exactly as they were when they were abandoned, and they are gradually being buried by the surrounding dunes. A handful of the structures, including the impressive concert hall, have been restored.

Tour highlights

  • Transfer to the Kalahari
  • Quiver Tree Forest and Canyon Park
  • Explore Fish River Canyon
  • Sperrgebiet and Aus
  • Visit Lüderitz, Kolmanskop and Wild Horses
  • Travel Sossusvlei

Itinary in details

Day1 transfer to the kalahari.

We will pick you up at the Windhoek International Airport and drive you to southern Namibia’s stunning Kalahari grassland. We will travel around 250 kilometres to get to our lodge, where we will check in and eat lunch before leaving for a private reserve game drive in the late afternoon. The acacia and grass savannah that covers the red sand dunes of the Kalahari Desert is home to numerous animals, including springbok, Oryx, red hartebeest, black-backed jackal, porcupine, steenbok, and ostrich. This will serve as the ideal introduction to Namibia’s southern region’s splendor.

Day2 Travel to Quiver Tree Forest and Canyon Park

We will travel south after a leisurely breakfast, stopping to see the Quiver Tree Forest and Giant’s Playground at Keetmanshoop on the way. We will then reach our lodge in the Gondwana Canyon Park along the Fish River Canyon. The Quiver Tree (Aloe dichotoma), which grows in large groups numbering several hundred, is a representation of Southern Namibia. They have a 120-year lifespan. We will go for an afternoon sundowner drive inside the reserve after a brief lunch. We’ll explore the park’s geology as well as search for animals like oryx, springbok, kudu, klipspringer, mountain, and Burchell’s zebra. Horseback rides in the park can be arranged upon request.

Day3 Transfer to Fish River Canyon

We will spend the morning exploring the amazing Fish River Canyon after getting a good night’s sleep and a hearty Namibian breakfast. One of Namibia’s top tourist destinations, it is the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the United States. We will go on an afternoon game drive in the park or, alternatively, take a morning stroll in the park after we will return to our accommodation for lunch and a brief break. Visit the canyon in the late afternoon if you have time, and then take a short stroll while holding a sundowner beverage to observe the setting sun.

Day4 Sperrgebiet and Aus

Today we will rise early and take a quick drive to a higher place to see the dawn while holding a cup of coffee. An unforgettable experience is witnessing an African sunrise. For breakfast, we’ll go back to the inn. After checking out, we will shortly resume our safari in a westward direction toward Aus and Luderitz, admiring the constantly morphing scenery as we go. At this time, the Sperrgebiet, a restricted diamond area, and the Orange River, which forms the border between Namibia and South Africa, will both be within striking distance of us. The Sperrgebiet Park and the Aus Mountains, where our lodging will be for the next two nights, provide beautiful views of the nearby lowlands. We’ll take a lovely drive through the reserve in the late afternoon.

Day5 Visit Lüderitz, Kolmanskop and Wild Horses

We will have the entire day to tour the nearby sites, which include Kolmanskop, Lüderitz, and the Namib Wild Horses. With the exception of Keetmanshoop, Lüderitz is the only other “big” town in the south. Bartolomeu Diaz, a Portuguese adventurer, built the Diaz Cross in 1488. We’ll also visit it and eat lunch at a seafood restaurant with a view of the ocean. The history of the old mining ghost town Kolmanskop is fascinating. It was established in 1908 after the discovery of diamonds and abandoned in 1930 as Kolmanskop’s diamond mining came to an end. We’ll undoubtedly stop at the Garub water point on the way home in the hopes of spotting some of the fabled Namib Wild Horses. As we travel back to our resort, you will discover more about their historical background.

Day6 Transfer to Sossusvlei

We will be up early and after breakfast, depart for a half-day tour of the surrounding desert landscape. You will learn about the fauna and flora as well as the geology and history of the area. We will be a lot further west and closer to the Atlantic Ocean and it is fascinating to see how the landscape and wildlife have changed during the last few days. As an alternative, we can plan a hiking excursion in the stunning Aus Mountains. We will leave for Sossusvlei after lunch, traveling through the NamibRand Nature Reserve’s breathtaking beauty. By late afternoon, we will arrive at our lodge close to the Sossusvlei entrance gate. Enjoy a wonderful dinner and an early bedtime in order to be ready for our early departure the following day for Sossusvlei.

Day7 Transfer to Swakopmund

We will go for a morning tour to Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei after an early breakfast and coffee. Along the way, we’ll make a picturesque pit stop at Dune 45 and spend some time at Dead Vlei and Sossusvlei. Some of the dunes in the area are a few hundred meters tall, but for those who dare, the view from the top is one they won’t soon forget. We’ll head to Swakopmund via the Namib Naukluft National Park after lunch. We’ll eat dinner at one of Swakopmund best restaurants and spend the night at a guesthouse. Please be aware that tonight’s meal is not a part of the package deal and is on your own dime.

Tour Reviews

Review by Chie Yamada:

I really enjoyed the tour and had a great time with new friends! Especially I was impressed at a wild camp. I slept on the rock without a tent and saw many falling stars. Also in Etosha NP I could watch so many animals! I suppose our team were very lucky!! This tour staffs were very kind and helpful. I enjoyed every meal during the tour. Just one thing I felt so sad is that I was the only person who got off in Windhoek. Everyone continued tour to Victoria Fall except me. I understood this situation but I just felt sad honestly.

Anyway I really thank you because you introduced this tour to my sister and I. I made many friends there and I will keep in touch with them. Also I was glad to spend great time with my sister in Africa. I will positively go back to South Africa! I hope you take care of my trip again.

We depart Etosha National Park this morning.  We will leave the park after a final morning of exploration and drive to Khorixas in the truck. You’ll see fossilized prehistoric tree trunks at the Petrified Forest, a national monument along the way. Formerly, these remnants were massive trees which were carried down a river and eventually trapped in alluvial sands, which gave them the appearance of being trapped in time. Lastly, we will visit the ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein in the Kunene Region, accompanied by a local guide. As one of the highest concentrations of rock petroglyphs in Africa, this area was inhabited by the Khoi San for 6000 years. 2500 rock paintings were created at this site as a result of shamanistic rituals conducted by the ancient inhabitants. In Khorixas, we will conclude the day after a full day of exploration.

Khorixas to Swakopmund, Namibia

We are departing Khorixas today for the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean where hot desert sand meets cool ocean waves. As we proceed, we will stop at the world’s largest seal colony, the Cape Cross Seal Colony. Cape Fur Seals can be seen huddled along the shore of this area in excess of 200,000. This site is also historically significant because it marks the location of the first European expedition to the Namibian coast in 1486. The king of Portugal at the time, Diego Cao, erected a cross here in honor of him. Occasionally, Cape Cross Colony may not be accessible, which would prevent us from visiting the seals. After visiting the Lichen Fields, we conclude our tour. During your guided tour, your guide will share fascinating information about the intricate lichen colonies that cover this area. The opportunity to take some memorable photographs is exceptional. The last stop before we reach Swakopmund is Wlotskasbaken, a seaside vacation destination. The picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean and quaint houses make this a fantastic photographic opportunity. A wonderful day of exploration will come to an end once we have captured these memories and arrived in Swakopmund, a beautiful coastal city located on Namibia’s coast.

We set off to our next destination travelling through a vast variety of landscapes, making our own new memories with new friends. Each day in Africa offers a new experience from an early morning sunrise hike, quad biking, sky dive or guided nature walk. The options are endless!

We have shorter travel days arriving at our campsite by midday or early afternoon, to enjoy lunch before joining our afternoon activity or simply enjoying a relaxed afternoon at your own pace.

On our longer travel days an early start ensures an earlier arrival at our campsite. We stop off at scenic spots to stretch our legs and take in the scenery, before lunch is enjoyed at a shady spot en-route. A mid- to-late afternoon arrival at our campsite allows us to set up camp, enjoy a beautiful sunset and end the day sitting around the campfire, under the stars.

Our best advice: expect the unexpected as this is Africa! We travel mainly on gravel roads and poorly kept tarmac roads – both setting the pace at which we travel. We do our best to arrive at our next destination, safety is our number one priority and while our overland vehicles are comfortable and spacious, they are not sports cars!

What type of vehicles do we use?

  • A custom-built, comfortable, safe and self-sufficient Africa overland truck to withstand the rugged African terrain.
  • Various vehicles are used on varying tours, with each offering comfortable seats with ample leg room.
  • Each vehicle has large glass windows for uninterrupted views and perfect for game drives.
  • Smaller 4×4 land cruiser type vehicles are used for game viewing in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, due to the roads being tougher and too narrow for the overland trucks.
  • Each overland vehicle includes a passenger safe to safely keep money + passports + flight tickets + credit cards. The keys are kept with your Tour Leader who will advise of safety requirements in place concerning the safe.Who is suited to go on an adventure tour?
  • Almost anyone can go on an adventure.

Some level of fitness is required due to accessing the vehicle and spending long days on bumpy roads (can take it out of you).EAST AFRICA TOURS require a more adventurous, fearless attitude and are suited to a younger traveller. If you are planning to trek with the Mountain Gorillas or climbing Mount Killi you will need to have a higher fitness level.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CAMPING OR ACCOMMODATED TOUR

Camping tours:.

A camping safari is for travellers who want a hands-on experience of Mother Nature. The guide(s) will do most of the work, but you will be required to assist with various tasks such as preparing the food, washing up, cleaning out the truck and setting up the campsite and your tent. If you dream of a lifetime African adventure, embark on a journey with us sleeping under the stars while listening to the sounds of wildlife in the distance.

We offer camping safaris suited to travellers who may prefer to travel in a younger group (aged 18 to 39). Or, you can choose a mixed age group (18 to 60). A camping safari must not be underestimated and will require active participation which means good health and a fair degree of fitness. We have a tour to suit what you have in mind, so please do not hesitate to enquire with us.

During an African camping safari you will stay in large two-man dome canvas tents which are spacious enough for two adults and your luggage. Or, you can opt to have your own tent by including the single supplement (valid on select camping tours).

Your tents are put up and taken down easily – your Tour Leader will show you exactly how to do this and help out when you are unsure. All tents are well-ventilated by means of a tent-door and window, covered with mosquito net. They also include a fly-sheet for the rain.

Most camping safaris include a sleeping mat (please do check with us upon enquiry). You need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel . All meals are prepared at the truck and you will be required to assist with the preparation.

The African campsites are basic and comfortable and you will be able to upgrade your accommodation at most of the places, but this is subject to availability. Most have warm showers and flushing ablutions, while others may have natural ablutions. Some places visited are bush camps where there are no facilities.

Accommodated Tours:

Accommodated safaris are ideal for travellers who prefer to experience African wildlife and adventure with extra comforts. You are surrounded by vast landscapes and wildlife, curiously roaming at your door-step. It is comfort, without the price tag!

Our accommodated safaris make use of a combination of lodges, hostels, bungalows, chalets, permanent safari camps, hotels and traditional huts. Our properties are ideally located at each destination for an authentic experience with incredible views.

We book Twin rooms if you are travelling with a partner or friend and Single rooms for single travellers (including single supplement). Most of the time we stay in 1-3 star properties with en-suite bathrooms in Southern Africa. In Eastern Africa we offer a combination of en-suite and shared bathrooms. In the case of shared bathrooms, you will be sharing with friends on your tour. Please bring your own towels as these are not always provided.

Select accommodated safaris include a camp assistant to help out with the smaller aspects of your vacation.

The standard of the properties varies along the trip. The Southern Africa properties are much more established than the East Africa accommodation. They vary from basic (but comfortable) to lovely properties. Due to the remote nature of the trips, accommodation choices are limited.

Distances and Road Conditions:

Our tours cover long distances so you can see significant amounts of Africa this means that there will be long days spent on the road often with nothing to look at except vast open plains. You can spend between 350km and 650km a day in the truck so it is important to be prepared.

What will you eat on safari?

Our Africa overland vehicles are fully stocked with dry goods at the start of each tour. We buy fresh produce (fruit and vegetables) almost daily to ensure fresh, good quality and tasty meals. Over the summer months fresh produce is not always available due to the heat and humidity, especially in East Africa and Mozambique – so we may have to skip tomatoes from lunch or opt for rice instead of potatoes at dinner.

Each Africa overland camping and accommodated tour include meals as per the itinerary. Often, we may only include breakfast and lunch, allowing you to enjoy dinner at a local market or restaurant. Drinks such as tea, coffee and fruit juice is included with every meal, but exclude bottle water, beer, soft drinks, alcohol etc. – these can be bought en-route or at your campsite bar.

We do cater for most dietary requirements (allergies, vegetarian, lactose-intolerant). Other requirements (gluten-free) may be more challenging on remote routes (i.e. East Africa) where starch is a stable-food in Africa. Please do speak to us about your dietary requirements and we will advise according to your trip. You will be amazed by the variety of tasty meals prepared on an open-fire!

Almost all your meals are pre-prepared over an open campfire or on the gas stove in your overland vehicle. All cooking equipment such as pots, pans, cutlery and crockery is included for you. Excellent hygiene standards are maintained at all times preparing food and washing up of kitchen equipment. Your guides will provide you with a separate washing up basin to wash hands in warm soapy water before and after each meal.

Our camping tours are limited participation tours, whereby we ask you to help out with daily chores (putting up / taking down tents) and help out your guides at meal times (rinsing, chopping vegetables).

So what are the meals like on tour? We have included a few meal options as a guideline:

Tea/coffee and juice + cereals + bread/toast + fruit. Take 2 fruits and keep one for a mid-morning snack. An occasional cooked breakfast (bacon, pancakes, eggs) is made when you have more time to allow for this (normally when you spend 2 nights at the same destination).

Juice + bread + cheese + cold meats + salads + fruit (make a sandwich for a mid-afternoon snack) Juice + fresh rolls + green salad (or rice salad or pasta salad) + fruit.

Tea/coffee and juice + chicken curry + rice, grilled or roast chicken + salad + garlic roll, grilled chicken + vegetables + salad, fish braai + salad, steak + veggies, pasta, stir-fry + rice, casserole, braai (barbeque) + salads + jacket potatoes, soup + fresh rolls.

Tea, coffee and cordial drinks are supplied with meals but other cooldrinks and alcohol can be purchased along the way.

What about children on tour?

  • Due to the nature of overland tours the minimum age limit is 18. Younger travellers (10 to 17) travelling with a parent(s) will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the tour, time of travel and tour availability. We do have select tours offering Family Departures, suited for children aged 10 to 17.
  • Privately arranged charter tours’ age limits will be assessed based on the route and type of tour you choose.
  • Please bear in mind that the Gorilla Trekking tours have a minimum age limit of 16 years.

Packing for your tour:

Packing sensibly is essential for your Africa Overland trip. One backpack and one daypack are needed and these can weigh no more than 25kg. A duffel bag is preferable as it will fit into the lockers on the truck, but you can also take a backpack with a compact, flexible, soft shell (without a hard frame). Please do not take suitcases. The airlines implement a 20kg per person limit on international flights for your luggage (your main bag) and a further 5 kg for carry-on luggage (your day bag). A good idea is to include a spare bag for curios that you may purchase, but don’t forget to include this in your weight for your trip home. A moneybelt is a useful item for keeping your money safe and hidden.

Take along comfortable, casual and semi-casual “wash & wear” clothes. Cotton is a good material for when it is hot, and fleece for when it gets cold. Pack clothes that don’t crease easily as the laundry facilities are limited. Find clothes that can be mixed and matched easily and are colour co-ordinated. A great item of clothing is zip-off pants. These double-up as shorts or trousers and are useful for when the weather changes. Reversible clothes are also very convenient and will help to reduce space in your bag.

  • Elastoplasts/band aids
  • Insect repellent (Malaria is a big problem in Africa, so the more protection the better)
  • Sterile dressings
  • Water bottle

  • Extra memory/film for your camera (remember to set at the highest resolution as you might want to enlarge the pictures)
  • Zip-lock bags (medium sized for cameras, snacks, trash etc.)
  • Extra batteries
  • Travel power strip ( a compact three-plug unit that includes two USB connections. With just one wall plug you can charge five gadgets) Buy on Amazon and will help to reduce space in your bag.
  • Biodegradable laundry detergent
  • Vaccination certificates for some areas
  • Small scrubbing brush
  • A padlock for your luggage locker in the truck
  • The power plugs in SA have 3 round pins. East Africa has British power plugs.
  • There will be washing facilities at most campsites which you can make use of.
  • Please remember to bring some environmentally friendly washing
  • We suggest you take along crease-free clothing as the facilities available for ironing are limited

Safety on Game Drives:

  • When on safari be as quiet as possible at all times and don’t make any sudden movements, this will ensure you don’t disturb the animals and get the most out of your game drive.
  • Do not jump off the truck at any time.

Accommodation (Pre Tour):

  • It is highly recommended to arrive a day before your tour starts so that you do not miss out on the pre departure meetings as it covers important information you need to know for your trip.
  • It is strongly advised that you arrive a day before the tour starts.
  • We do advise letting us know as soon as possible in order for us to make the best hotel reservation for you.
  • Post accommodation can be very easily arranged.

Personal Health:

  • Ensure that the guides know of your medical conditions!!!
  • Let them know how you are feeling.
  • AIDS is an enormous problem in Africa so please be careful and practical, condoms are cheap and freely available.
  • A First Aid Kit is available on the truck for any emergencies.

Vaccinations:

  • Please ensure you seek medical advice from your travel doctor before visiting Africa.
  • You should consult your travel doctor or travel clinic for the latest requirements for Hepatitis A (Havrax), Yellow Fever, Tetanus Booster Shot, Rabies
  • If you are entering a Yellow Fever infected area, you will be required to have a vaccination which can be done at Travel Clinics.
  • Obtain an international Certificate of Vaccination with a valid stamp.
  • Yellow Fever – Valid for 10 years and mandatory for most African countries. It is compulsory to produce a yellow fever certificate when entering Kenya, Zanzibar and Malawi and for taking part in the Gorilla Trek. Failure to present this may result in entry being refused.
  • We also recommend that you ask your doctor about: Typhoid, Tetanus, Hepatitis, Meningitis, Polio, Hepatitis A&B, Cholera
  • Tents have mosquito nets in the vents and it is not generally necessary to bring a separate mosquito net unless you plan to sleep outside, under the stars(in which case you are recommended to bring one)
  • Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes and is more prevalent in areas where there are high concentrations.
  • Malaria is a serious problem in Africa, but if you are cautious and use mosquito repellent and take your malaria tablets you will be safe.

Main points to keep in mind about malaria: o Cover your skin with long shirts, pants and socks as most mosquito bites occur below the knee. o Make sure your mosquito net is tightly closed and doesn’t have any holes in it. o Use an effective prophylactic and speak to your doctor about options for anti-malarial tablets o Always cover yourself with mosquito repellent, especially at sunset. o Please know that malaria cannot be cured!

  • Dehydration is a common ailment on tour.
  • You should be drinking a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
  • It is preferable to drinking bottled water to avoid diarrhoea, but your guide will advise you as to whether you can drink the water or not.

How others can reach you:

  • The easiest option to keep in touch with your loved ones at home is to buy a SIM card of the respective country you are travelling in.

Photography:

  • You are not permitted to take photographs at the border crossing, government buildings and military institutions.
  • No photographs of the army, police are allowed.
  • Some tribes do not allow their pictures to be taken so please ask your guides before photographing whether it is permissible or not.
  • A fee may have to be paid for photographing the local people.

Crew and Guides

Your tour crew are people with a heart of gold and love living in Africa! With an in-depth knowledge of the local culture, history and wildlife, your crew are committed to ensuring a memorable African overland tour, 24/7.

  • Most overland tours include two crew members (Driver and Tour Leader) working as a team managing tour finances, planning activities, preparing meals and ensure you safely experience Africa.
  • Our larger group overland tours (maximum 26 to 30) include a third crew member (Camp Assistant or Cook or Translator – tour depending).
  • A pre-departure meeting is held the day before your tour, where tour crew will brief you on the nature of your tour and what to expect. At this point they would also collect any local payments needed for your tour.
  • We have select shorter small group tours including one crew member, responsible for driving and tour management. It is perfect for an exclusive, personalised African experience.

The Guides:

  • All overland guides and crew undergo extensive training courses, lectures and field instruction on an on-going basis. Specialised guides are contracted for special interest tours (including school and University group tours) or language tours (Spanish and German) or private overland tours (on request).
  • Although overland guides are trained and qualified, remember they are still human. The nature of their work and duration of overland tours, places an enormous demand on them and can be taxing at times. Please treat them with respect and enjoy getting to know them. They are great people!

Climate and Weather Conditions:

  • The weather in Africa can be unpredictable and extreme so be prepared for this.
  • You can find out the type of weather to expect on your tour from your consultant.
  • Always wear sunscreen from October to April.
  • Temperatures can drop to below zero from June to September.
  • It does rain in Africa!

Street Vendors:

  • Like with any 3rd world country you will encounter informal vendors offering you better rates than the banks. We suggest you don’t work with them for security reasons.
  • Please do not display your foreign currency in public.
  • A valid passport is required for all international travel.
  • Having all the necessary documentation for your trip is your own responsibility therefore you need to find out by your travel agent what the essential documents for the trip are in order to avoid any complications on tour.
  • Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after returning from your trip.
  • In certain cases foreign passport holders require entry, re-entry or departure permits and/or visas to enter a country.
  • Have enough pages for all visas, at least 2 pages free for every country visiting – the Border Security is strict with this rule
  • A copy of your passport should be given to your guides for safety reasons.
  • Must be valid for 6 months after the date of departure from Africa.
  • Avoid using more than one passport to avoid visa payments when travelling
  • Please note that visas are the responsibility of the traveller and African Overland Tours will not be held responsible for the traveller being denied entry should they not be in the possession of the relevant visas.
  • Ensure you have a valid onward/return ticket to leave the country when the tour ends, otherwise you need sufficient funds in your bank account.
  • Visiting the Okavango Delta, you may need a double entry visa for Namibia and or Botswana
  • Botswana Tourism Levy: As of 1 June 2017, Botswana has implemented a tourism levy of US$ 30 per person to be paid in US Dollars cash once you enter.

Medical Insurance:

  • Compulsory! No one will be allowed on a trip if you don’t have this. It is for your safety should anything happen while on tour (especially when in a remote location).

Travel Insurance:

  • It is compulsory to have comprehensive adventure travel insurance, on all overland tours. We require your travel insurance details upon booking your vacation, to include on the passenger list.
  • Most travel insurance policies do not include cover for adrenaline sports and adventure activities. These include white-water rafting, sky diving and bungee jumping. So double check your policy inclusions.
  • WorldNomads Insurance offer adventure travel insurance and, most importantly, cancellation insurance. We strongly recommend your travel insurance includes cancellation and curtailment insurance. The majority of tour departures are guaranteed (confirmed to depart) but in the unlikely event of a tour departure being cancelled, you would be protected.
  • In the case of credit card insurance, we recommend you check the fine print to ensure you have adequate cover as credit card companies offer a standard option. Sometimes, just for a simple problem, you may have to be airlifted to South Africa as many public hospitals in Africa are below western standards.
  • If you choose to use your credit card insurance, you will need to call your bank to obtain your policy details. This is how: • Phone your bank • Give them your Bank Card Number • They will ask you to verify your account • Then you need to ask for the insurance company name • Then you need to ask for the policy number • Remember to keep the telephone number you dialled

Single Supplements:

A single supplement is an additional charge you will pay for your own room. Single supplements are optional on camping tours, but compulsory on accommodated tours if you are a single traveller. Single supplements do not cover Activity Packages.

Optional Activities:

Optional activities are not included in the tour price because not everybody wishes to do them. Sometimes the activities are not available due to time, season or weather conditions

What is a Local Payment?

  • A number of adventure overland tours are made up of a Tour Price + Local Payment.
  • The Tour Price is pre-paid to secure your tour seat and include operational costs associated with each tour, such as; guide salaries, fuel, vehicle servicing, maintenance, road tolls and taxes.
  • The Local Payment is a portion of your overall tour cost paid on the morning of tour departure, in either US Dollars cash or ZA Rand cash (tour depending). It includes “on tour” expenses which cannot ordinarily be pre-paid such as: food, camping, national park entry, included activities.

Activity Package:

  • A selection of tours are made up of a Tour Price + Optional Activity Package.
  • The Tour Price is pre-paid to secure your tour seat and include operational costs associated with each tour, such as; food, camping (or accommodation), national park fees, guide salaries, fuel, vehicle servicing, maintenance, road tolls and taxes.
  • The Optional Activity Package combine the popular activities available on the tour, giving you the option to pre-pay this package (and so carry less cash while travelling) or; you can pay it on the morning of departure to your Tour Guide in ZA Rand cash.
  • Activity packages are optional 98% of the time and covers what we consider to be ‘essential activities’ on the tours.
  • It is more convenient to pay these upon your arrival or on the first day of the tour.
  • If you do not pre-book a particular activity it may not be available and you may be disappointed.

Money Matters:

  • Your spending money, visas and optional activities needs to consist of a combination of Cash and Traveller Cheques in the currency quoted (tour specific). Credit cards are only accepted at some places (mostly larger cities) and throughout South Africa.
  • Visas are not accepted in East Africa.
  • In Southern and East Africa, additional credit card surcharges from 5% to 8% may be charged when using your card. It is best to use it only in case of emergency.
  • US Dollars, GB Sterling, Euro and select international currencies are used within Africa, with US Dollar being the most popular. You will find food, taxi, accommodation and optional activity prices are all quoted in US Dollars.
  • US Dollars cash notes must be issued POST 2005. No notes pre-dated are accepted due to fraudulent notes rife in East Africa. You can pre-order US Cash notes from your local bank or foreign exchange office prior to arriving in Africa.
  • It is best to bring a combination of larger denominations (USD100 and USD50) to pay for your Local Payment and smaller denominations (USD50, UDS20, USD 10 and USD5) for spending money, visas and optional activities.
  • ATMs are found throughout South Africa and other major towns and cities through Africa. However, you may not have access to an ATM for a few days, or they may be out of order. Please note that when drawing money from a local ATM, you will receive local currency. In Zimbabwe the ATM’s limit the amount of USD that can be withdrawn (it ranges from 50 USD – 200 USD a day).
  • ZAR is mostly used in South Africa and Namibia. We recommend USD for Botswana, Mozambique, Livingstone and Victoria Falls area.

Credit Cards:

  • Most of the major Southern and East African cities do have credit card facilities available however they may charge you a surcharge to use the facility.
  • Visa and Mastercard are the two most widely used accepted credit cards in Africa, while diners or American Express may not always be accepted

Banking facilities:

  • There are full banking facilities in the major towns based on weekly business hours. Here you can change money and withdraw cash from a credit card. Visa and Master Card are preferential, as other cards may not be widely accepted.
  • It is recommended to tip for various activities on tour – we suggest a tip of 1-3 euro (or whichever local currency is acceptable) per client, per half day activity.
  • Tipping your tour leader is also highly recommended as he / she works really hard to ensure you have the best experience on your tour. A tip of 2 – 5 Euros per client per day is a reasonable fair.
  • The amounts quoted above are only guidelines for the clients.

Departure Tax:

  • Various countries require you to pay an Airport Departure Tax (Zimbabwe is one) when departing on an international flight.
  • Varies from US$10 – US$60 depending on the departure time
  • The truck has a safe for passports, money, credit cards and flight tickets only!
  • Keep your cameras, cell phones, iPad’s and other digital equipment close to you at all times (preferably in your day pack) as the operator will not be held responsible for anything that goes missing.
  • Leave your valuables at home!
  • Be vigilant and cautious at all times.
  • Always walk in a group, especially at night.
  • It is advisable to have travel insurance for your personal items.

Quality and Protection:

  • We are proudly bonded SATSA members. Our membership number is 1712.
  • We are also insured by SATIB.
  • SATSA is the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association and offers protection to international travellers against the possible loss of deposits (or monies paid) to a SATSA member (tour operator, car rental company, accommodation provider etc.), in case of liquidation. It is underwritten by Lombard Insurance and Lloyds of London.
  • SATSA is the driving force behind improving standards of tourism in South Africa, as offered by its various members (tour operators, car rental companies, accommodation provider etc.).
  • “Should a SATSA member who is a South African tourism business operation, run into financial problems, the bonding scheme allows the client to claim back their deposit without having to prove in a court or to the liquidator whom or what was paid, but simply to produce the relevant documentation to SATSA.” – Michael Tatalias, CEO SATSA.
  • Satsa Bonding Offers financial protection on all monies paid.

Safari Travel Planner

Bordering South Africa, Namibia’s southern region has a lot to offer in terms of wild desert landscapes and outdoor activities, ranging from canoeing on the Orange River through the other-worldly desert scenery of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park to hiking the jaw-dropping majesty of the Fish River Canyon, Africa’s largest canyon.

sunset with amazing clouds and golden light at sunset

Southern Namibia may not be a prime safari destination , but what it lacks in famous wildlife, it makes up for in sublime desert scenery. Imagine sandy plains dotted with quiver trees, jagged granite mountains, and imposing rock formations.

The standout highlight of southern Namibia is the Fish River Canyon, but the rest of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is also full of desert wonders, including the richest diversity of succulent flora in the world.

On the coast, Lüderitz is an intriguing colonial town, while nearby Kolmanskop, a ghost town, is one of Namibia’s most photographed places and lies on the edge of the Sperrgebiet National Park, Namibia’s newest national park.

Most of the park, a diamond mining area closed to the public for a century, remains inaccessible, but travelers can now visit on guided expeditions to explore a rich, succulent biome, a colossal rock arch, and two mysterious ghost towns.

At Namibia’s border with South Africa, the Orange River meanders its way through wild desert landscapes. Taking a paddle down the river in a canoe for a few hours or days is the perfect way to take in this southern beauty at a slow pace.

Further north, the NamibRand Nature Reserve is a vast concession on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, where you see desert wildlife such as oryx and springbok against a backdrop of apricot-colored dunes and silvery plains. Highlights of a Southern Namibia Safari

Crossing over the border of South Africa, the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park has some wildlife such as oryx, springbok, zebra, and baboons, but with its low density of animals and lack of big game, it’s not usually known as a prime safari destination.

Instead, travelers visit the park for its out-of-this-world Mars-like landscapes of looming mountains, boulder-strewn plains, striking quiver trees, and its incredible diversity of plant life (try to visit in August and September when wildflowers are blooming).

The park is the world’s only arid biodiversity hotspot, conserving the richest diversity of succulents on the planet. Another highlight of the park is the |Ai-|Ais thermal hot springs, where you can soak in outdoor baths under the shadow of mountains in a photogenic setting.

73 year old man embarks on the tough fish river canyon hike

The ancient water-carved Fish River Canyon, Africa’s largest canyon at 550m/1804ft deep and 160km/99mi wide, is a truly humbling sight to take in and the star attraction of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.

Standing on the edge of the gorge and peering down into the abyss makes you realize how small and insignificant you are compared to the mighty forces of nature.

There are easy hikes around the canyon, but if you’re up for a challenge, the 85km/52mi multi-day Fish River Canyon Hike, which traverses half the gorge’s length, is the best way to get to grips with this geological wonder.

Canoeing trips on the Orange River, which forms a natural boundary with South Africa, are a must-do when traveling southern Namibia. Whether you have a few hours or days, paddling down the river at a gentle pace is the perfect way of taking in the desert scenery.

Rafting the Orange River

A few different outfitters offer guided trips that include all your meals and camp setup, so all you have to do is spend your days paddling and swimming and enjoying magical nights sleeping under a sky thick with stars.

The colonial coastal town of Lüderitz is an interesting place to visit, with its historic mansions and restaurants serving tasty fresh seafood (don’t miss the local oysters). Activities not to be missed are boat tours to a Cape fur seal sanctuary and penguin colony.

Kolmanskop Namibia

Close by, the abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop is now a ghost town and one of Namibia’s most photogenic places. It’s an eerie experience to wander around the town’s crumbling buildings, slowly being swallowed by the desert sands.

When you’re driving between Lüderitz and Aus, keep an eye out for the herd of wild horses (the world’s only wild desert horses) that roam this area of this desert and can often be seen near the road.

Another worthy roadside stop is the beautiful Quiver Tree Forest near Keetmanshoop, where 250 of the unusual and striking-looking quiver trees (or kokerboom) stand sentinel over grass and boulders.

Practical Information for a Southern Namibia Safari

It’s easy to drive to southern Namibia from South Africa, so if you’re thinking of traveling to South Africa on your holiday , you might want to consider flying to Cape Town and renting a car to drive up to Namibia .

If you’d like to hike the Fish River Canyon, you need to go during the cooler months from May to September and be sure to book a year in advance.

Orange river canoe adventure

While the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is extremely hot during the summer months from November to March, it’s a good time to do a canoeing trip down the Orange River as you spend a lot of the day in the water and can sleep under clear night skies.

Don’t attempt to enter the Sperrgebiet (Forbidden Area) unless you’re on a guided tour – it’s a diamond mining area, and you will be prosecuted for trespassing without a permit.

12 Days Guided Photo Tour

Photography Tour North

The Kalahari

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Kalahari-Desert

After a good breakfast, the tour starts towards the Kalahari Desert, which is reached in the early afternoon.

Here you can relax a bit before you go on a guided “Sundowner” tour through the wonderful Kalahari Desert. On the huge lodge grounds there are numerous animal desert dwellers who, with a bit of luck, will jump in front of our lenses in the perfect light. In the evening there is a hearty dinner at the Lodge Restaurant.

Note: Guided Sundowner Tour is included in the tour price

Includes: Breakfast, light Lunch, Dinner, water in the vehicle

The South Kalahari

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Kalahari-Desert

Today we drive mostly on gravel roads to the next destination, the Kalahari Game Lodge.

The lodge consists of eight luxurious ensuite chalets with ceiling fans, air conditioning and mosquito nets. The small kitchenette has tea and coffee making facilities, a sink, a small fridge and a seating area. Each chalet also has its own terrace with an idyllic view of the peaceful surroundings. At the lodge guests can enjoy the restaurant, pool, fire pit and bar.

The lodge offers tours on the farm area where, with a bit of luck, you can also see Kalahari lions. In the afternoon, another guided sundowner drive is planned, where you can see the overgrown Kalahari dunes in the perfect light.

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Kalahari-Desert

In search of the lions of the Kalahari

The Kalahari Game Lodge is one of the few places in the Kalahri where you can see desert lions. Today you will go on a quest to track down the king of the beasts on a guided safari across the vast grounds. A unique experience with great scenery awaits you.

Note: Guided lion tour is included in the tour price

Quiver Tree Forest

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Quiver Tree Forest

Today’s stage leads over gravel roads to the next destination, the Quiver Tree Forest.

The path winds for a few kilometers over a great dune landscape, which is a great photo motif. Next comes the small village of Koës, where you can fill up or buy a cold drink.

Shortly before the stage destination you pass the “Giants Playground”. Nature has done a great job here. Thousands of huge boulders of volcanic rock are wildly stacked on top of each other and form a unique picture. If you want, you can take a short hike through this stone maze.

An absolute must is the sundowner in the Quiver Tree Forest. This is best enjoyed with a cool Namibian beer. Don’t forget to take your photo equipment with you! Here the setting sun offers a beautiful motif every day when it disappears in the background of the quiver tree forest.

Cheetah feeding In the late afternoon you can accompany the farmer Nolte to the cheetah feeding. The brave can also enter the cheetah enclosure to pet the ‘cats’.

Note: Visit to the Giants Playground and Quiver Tree Forest is included in the tour price

Fish River Canyon

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Fish River Canyon

The harsh Karas region

We leave the Quiver Tree Forest and drive to Keetmanshoop. A few kilometers outside the village we turn south onto the D608 gravel road. This leads through a breathtaking hilly landscape, over the Lion River and past the Karas Mountains. Then continue through a private conservancy where, with a bit of luck, you can spot all kinds of desert animals, such as oryx, springbok, ostrich and zebra.

Quiver trees, Nama culture, rugged landscape and an impressive rock formation characterize the Canyon Lodge and offer many great photo opportunities. Take the time to put your feet up, sit by the pool in the sun, relax in one of the comfortable sofas in the living room, watch the sun set over Gondwana Canyon Park on a sunset drive or on one of the many walks through the rocky hills .

Lunch The Canyon Roadhouse is definitely worth a visit. The old building with its vintage cars offers great photo opportunities, this is also a good opportunity for a delicious lunch and a refreshing cold drink.

Note: Lunch at the Canyon Roadhouse is included in the tour price. Drinks have to be paid for by yourself.

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Fish River Canyon

The second largest canyon in the world

In the extreme south of Namibia you will visit an amazing natural phenomenon, the Fish River Canyon. About 650 million years ago, plate movement lowered the area through which the ancient Fish River flowed, eroding the flat plain. This is the beginning of the canyon today. Enjoy spectacular views across the canyon from a number of vantage points.

Today you will be able to admire and photograph this mighty canyon. Your guide will plan the best times, when, and where to visit Canyon Park to capture the perfect light.

Note: Visit to Fish River Canyon included in tour price.

Namib Desert

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Richtersfeld National Park

The Oranje River and the Richtersfeld National Park

Today’s route takes you to the southern edge of the Namib, which is very dry and barren. This area resembles a Martian landscape but is quite spectacular in its own way. After a while you reach the Orange River, a green lifeline in the midst of this barren landscape. This is not only one of the four rivers in Namibia that carry water all year round, but it also forms the border between Namibia and South Africa. The gravel road meanders through the beautiful Richtersveld/Transfontier Park, always alongside the river. You won’t see many animals here, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking scenery.

Rosh Pina, a small mining village is next on your route. From there you have to overcome about 1000 meters of altitude on a good tar road through the southern Namib until you reach the small village of Aus.

The city of Aus dates back to the German colonial era and was one of the first towns in the former German Southwest Africa. You can stop off at the newly renovated train station hotel to enjoy a delicious homemade cake. We will also spend the night here.

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-wild horses of the Namib

The wild horses of the Namib

The journey today goes to the cold Atlantic, to Lüderitz. On the way we visit the wild horses of the Namib, which can often be found at the Garub waterhole. The old railway stations along the route also offer great photo opportunities.

Around noon we reach the coastal town of Lüderitz, which experienced its most prosperous years during the diamond rush between the two world wars. The “ghost town” of Kolmanskuppe will certainly leave an impression. This once prosperous diamond 1920’s luxury settlement with casino, theatre, shops and mansions was taken over by nature shortly after the city was abandoned in 1954. The desert sands literally swamped the settlement and what remains is a bizarre sight, but a photographer’s and history buff’s paradise.

In the afternoon we explore the area around Lüderitz. Driving to Diaz Point and Big Bay is also a worthwhile activity. The original cross placed by Batholemeu Diaz on his early excursions to southern Africa is long gone, but a replica still stands at the site today. There are numerous small coves on the rocky coast. When the wind blows, which it does quite often, the last 10 km from the road to Lüderitz can be covered by low sand dunes.

Note: Visit to the wild horses of Garub is included in the tour price

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Luderitz-Kolmanskuppe

The ghost town of Kolmanskuppe

In the morning we leave Lüderitz and drive 10km to the attraction. One of the most interesting sights of Lüderitz is the ghost town of Kolmannskuppe. This once bustling diamond city is now deserted and fights a constant battle with the sand dunes of the Namib Desert. There are guided tours every morning which are very informative. The guided tours in English or German usually start at 9:30 am. A special highlight of the tour is a visit to the bowling alley. After the guided tour, you can explore the city independently.

Then the trip goes back inland. From Aus we drive north. After the first 30km ride, a spectacular landscape opens up in front of you. In the distance you can see the massive Tiras Mountains, in front of them huge areas of grass and sand and a few red dunes in the west. After about 55km turn west and follow the famous D707, which can be very sandy in some places, but offers a great panorama. Then proceed to Namtib Desert Lodge where you will spend the night.

Farm Namtib is situated on the edge of the Namib Desert in the Tiras Mountains. It is a private biosphere reserve covering an area of 16,400 hectares. Agricultural and human activities are adapted here to the dry climate of southern Namibia. The fascinating landscape of the farm offers an abundance of breathtaking views and is home to a rich fauna and flora.

The Namtib Biosphere Reserve is located on one of the most beautiful routes in southern Namibia. The farm is ideally located between the Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei / Sesriem or Lüderitzbucht and Sossusvlei / Sesriem. The Namtib Biosphere Reserve allows guests to relax while also having the opportunity to experience how a typical Namibian farm works. Here you can discover a wealth of interesting information about the Namib Desert, the Tiras Mountains and the fauna and flora of southern Namibia.

Namtib Desert Lodge offers an authentic Namibian farmstyle experience in the middle of the vast Namib Desert. In the afternoon we will then go on a nature drive on the farm area and explore the impressive desert landscapes.

Note: Visit to Kolmasuppe and scenic drive at Namtib is included in the tour price

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Sossusvlei

Drive-through the oldest desert in the world, the Namib.

Today’s journey continues north to Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei. The guide will stop for a few photo stops along the way and lunch packs are available for everyone around noon. In the afternoon you will reach the beautiful lodge. At sunset we go to a nearby dune landscape, where the first great dune shots are taken. In the evening there will be dinner together with a great view at the Lodge Restaurant.

Note: Entry to the Namib-Naukluft Park included in the tour price.

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Sossusvlei

Day trip to the world famous red dunes of Sossusvlei

It starts early in the morning so that you can still experience the beautiful light of the morning hours. Early entry to the park is possible as our lodge is located within the park. A narrow tar road takes you past beautiful landscapes and high dunes to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei. A 1.5 km hike takes you over clay flats and a small dune to the ancient, dried up acacia trees of the Dead Vlei, which are now world famous.

Information Sossusvlei Sossusvlei is located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest nature reserve in Africa. The most famous photographs of Namibia undoubtedly come from Sossusvlei. The images are stunning with the intense red dunes and sharp lines. The dunes in this area are the highest in the world, reaching immense heights of almost 400 meters. Climb Dune 45 and enjoy the fantastic view over the dune sea. Another stop is Deadvlei, a dry lake with tree stumps that has become an almost surrealistic landscape.

Sossusvlei means “dead end swamp” because it is where the dunes that prevent the Tsauchab River from reaching the Atlantic Ocean converge. However, due to the drought in the Namib Desert, this river rarely flows that far at all, hence the pan is dry most years. However, during a good rainy season, the Tsauchab River fills the salt pan and visitors from all over the world flock to the area to experience this spectacular site.

Around noon you can then enjoy your packed lunch under the camel thorn trees by the Sossusvlei Dry Pan. Afterwards the drive goes back to the entrance gate at Sesriem, where the Sesriem Canyon can also be explored. In the afternoon you will reach the beautiful lodge again.

Note: Admission to Namib-Naukluft Park and visits to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon included in the tour price.

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South-Solitaire Bakery

Balloon flight over the Namib desert (optional)

A total highlight awaits you today. You must be at the hot air balloon launch site before sunrise. Experience the sunrise high above the desert landscape, with an indescribable view.

Stop for a piece of apple pie The small gas station and rest stop, Solitaire, is a great place to stop. It is very conveniently located on your tour of south western Namibia and on the way to Swakopmund. In the small Solitaire Bakery there are many delicacies, including the best apple pie in Namibia. There is an old car graveyard here that invites you to take great pictures.

You then leave the Namib Desert over the steep Spreetshoogte Pass. The vantage point offers a great panorama with the setting sun in the west. The nearby guest farm offers a great end to this trip.

Note: Photo stop at Spreetshoogte Pass is included in the tour price

Windhoek and surroundings

Guided Namibia Photography Tour South

After enjoying a breakfast amidst the spectacular scenery of the Namib Desert; depart to your next lodge at the foot of petrified dunes. Here you have the opportunity to explore the Namib Desert on spectacular scenic nature and sun downer drives or relax by the side of the lodge pools.

Classic: Overnight at Namib Desert Lodge on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Overnight at Desert Grace on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 9-10, Swakopmund (300 km)

Today you travel via the Namib Naukluft Park to Swakopmund. This is a tranquil coastal town situated between the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the Welwitschia plains and the aptly named Moon landscape. Two of the attractions during this scenic drive. The Welwitschia Mirabilis is unique to the Namib. It is in fact a coniferous dwarf tree that is related to the pine tree.

In Swakopmund, you have the option of participating in some of the adventurous activities on offer. Walvis Bay is a short drive away and some activities start there. It’s well worth a drive to see the fairly busy harbor and Dune 7. Dune 7 is actually the highest dune in Namibia at over 1 256 feet / 383 meters. Activities include scenic flights, dolphin cruises, quad biking, parasailing, dune boarding; plus many more.

Classic: Overnight at Organic Square Guest House on a Bed & Breakfast basis Superior: Overnight at Strand Hotel on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 11, Departure (350 km)

After a relaxed breakfast, travel up the Namibian plateau and back to Windhoek; where you return your rental vehicle and your tour ends. Alternatively; connect with other tour options. If you have the time; the northern safari is a great tour to combine with this one in order to cover the north and south of Namibia. Breakfast.

Namibia Safari Tours & Holidays

A safari in Namibia is as much about the wildlife as the country’s scenic beauty. In Etosha National Park it has one of the most storied wildlife reserves on the continent, but there’s so much more to experience here. The national parks of the Zambezi Region (formerly Caprivi Strip) are only now getting the attention they deserve, while the dune-scapes of the Skeleton Coast and its hinterland are simply extraordinary. And these are just starting points for exploring a country rich in experiences and safari possibilities.

8 Questions About Namibia Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

tour south of namibia

When is the best time to visit Namibia?

“If I had to choose one month for a Namibia tour, it would be June (followed by May). Although June temperatures can plummet overnight, you get the best of both worlds: high-season prices have yet to kick in, but the weather is ideal for outdoor exploration. As long as you don’t mind high-season prices and higher numbers of visitors with whom to share the wilderness, July through to October is also excellent with generally dry, clear weather and good visibility. By October, temperatures are starting to rise towards uncomfortable levels. The rains are less of an issue in Namibia than they are elsewhere in southern Africa, but rain does occur, especially from December through to March or April. At this time, birdlife is abundant. However, some off-road trails may become difficult to navigate and wildlife tends to disperse and be harder to find (because of the additional water sources scattered around).”

What are the major attractions in Namibia?

“Wildlife is a major draw for visitors on Namibia safaris. Etosha National Park , in particular, is one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations – and rightly so. Its combination of hallucinatory salt pans and large wildlife populations (including lions, elephants and plains animals in abundance) give it a distinction found in few other parks. Less commonly visited, but for many travelers equally rewarding, are Damaraland and the reserves of the Zambezi Region, such as Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara (Mamili) National Parks. Landscapes are another highlight. From the Waterberg Plateau and Namib-Naukluft National Park to Kaokoland and Fish River Canyon (Africa’s answer to the Grand Canyon), stark beauty takes on many forms here. Namibia has long been a popular destination for self-drive safaris, but a Namibia safari is now just as likely to be characterized by luxury lodges, both exclusive and remote, that bring class and comfort to the whole experience.”

How much does a Namibia safari cost?

“It is possible to do a Namibia safari on the cheap, by renting a 4WD and heading out into the wild. While vehicle rental costs are generally high, and fuel is never cheap, your vehicle will also be your home, and camping and national park fees are not as expensive as in some other countries. As a minimum, expect to pay US$175 per person per day. If you’re looking for higher comfort levels and for someone else to take care of the arrangements, Namibia safari prices also reach for the high end rather well. Although there are degrees of comfort and cost, the price of a Namibia safari package can go as high as US$1,075 per person per day.”

What is the wildlife viewing like in Namibia?

“The best places to see wildlife on a Namibia safari are in the country’s north. Etosha National Park is especially good for lions and elephants, but you’ll also see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and all manner of antelope species. After dark, black rhinos gather at waterholes, including those alongside some of the main camping areas, and it was here that the BBC first filmed this unusual behavior. African wild dogs are a possibility in the northeast, while sable, sitatunga and red lechwe antelope are highlights in Bwabwata National Park. In the northwest, Damaraland and Kaokoland are famed for desert-adapted lions and elephants, and brown hyenas can be seen scavenging around seal colonies on the coast. Farther south, wildlife is scarcer and the main reason to visit is the scenery.”

How safe is Namibia for tourists?

“Namibia is generally safe and politically stable. You’re unlikely to experience any problems in safari areas, such as parks, reserves and wilderness areas. Although most Namibian cities are considered safe and very few travelers run into trouble, you should be careful in larger cities, especially Windhoek, where petty crime is a growing problem. Road conditions are generally excellent along the main road network, although off-road conditions can prove difficult, from the deep sands of Namib-Naukluft and Khaudum National Parks to the axle-breaking rocks of Damaraland and Kaokoland. If self-driving in these areas, make sure you are prepared. The only risk of malaria is in the extreme north, along the border with Angola and in the Zambezi Region.”

How do I select a reliable Namibian tour operator?

“Your first stop when planning a Namibia holiday should be SafariBookings.com, where you can see the widest range of safari options in one place. The insights that you’ll get from expert reviews of the parks and from travelers’ experiences with operators offering Namibia tours could prove invaluable. Beyond that, talk at length to any company you are considering for your travel plans. No question should go unanswered. A visit to Namibia can be expensive and you want to be well informed about what you’re paying for. Safaris are a dream trip for so many, and avoiding a nasty surprise or preventable disappointment while on the adventure of a lifetime should be more than enough motivation to ask questions of the company you book with. Make sure that you spell out your expectations of your Namibia safari. Is it wildlife or the landscapes that you most want to see? What wildlife is on your bucket list? What’s your daily itinerary? How many hours can you expect to spend in the car each day? If a company is unwilling or reluctant to answer these questions, you should look elsewhere.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“If you’re self-driving, as so many visitors to Namibia do, you’ll likely sleep in a tent: either on the ground or on the roof of the vehicle. Camping areas in Namibia are often crowded, especially in popular wildlife areas such as Etosha National Park, but they’re also fenced, unlike in neighboring Botswana. Most have facilities that include showers, toilets and sometimes even restaurants, kiosks and swimming pools. Elsewhere, Namibia has a full complement of lodges and hotels, usually on the fringes of wilderness areas. These span the complete range of costs and comfort levels. Inside the parks, reserves and remote areas, luxury lodges and tented camps, usually designed to blend into their surroundings, dominate. They often have just 8 to 10 tents, ensuring an exclusive experience at all times. Tents are large, with comfortable beds, writing desks, private bathrooms and private decks or terraces. The night noises of Africa and cooling evening breezes make the safari tent one of my favorite places to sleep anywhere on earth.”

What can I expect from a safari in Namibia?

“If your Namibia tour is all about wildlife, expect a similar experience in Namibia as you would elsewhere in Africa. This means a pre-dawn wake-up call, safari drives in the very early morning and again in the late afternoon, and perhaps even a night drive. On these drives, you’ll be accompanied by a guide, a driver and sometimes a local tracker perched on a seat on the hood of the vehicle looking for animal spoor (marks or substances left behind as animals move through their environment). You can also expect a full breakfast after you return from the morning’s drive, plus lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with plenty of relaxation time in between. If your visit is more about exploring wild landscapes, your focus may be different, but the daily rhythms (formed in part to avoid being out during the hottest times of the day) are likely to be similar.”

There are different ways to experience it: On Namibia guided safari tours together with your experienced guide, on self-drive tours in your own rental car, or as part of an activity organised by your lodge and together with a local guide. You can go on classic game drives in Etosha National Park, or the lesser-known, but wildlife-rich parks of the Zambezi Region, among them Bwabwata, Mudumu, and Nkasa Rupara National Parks. A classic activity in Namibia but so many ways to experience it: a desert tour. Most desert tours will take you to the section of the Namib Desert in the Namib Naukluft Park. Here you can visit exciting scenic highlights such as Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, the Sesriem Canyon, Big Daddy and Dune 45. The Namib Desert around Swakopmund is well-known for its adventure activities: sandboarding, quad biking, fat bike tours, and guided tours to the “Little Five”. Yet another fascinating outdoor destination is the Kalahari Desert in the East of the country. You can explore Namibia’s deserts on guided nature walks or see it from a hot air balloon or a light aircraft. Learn more about Desert Tours!

Get out of the car and take in the sounds and smells and colours – Namibia is an excellent destination for active outdoor lovers and hikers. You can add shorter hikes to a guided tour or self-drive trip or build your itinerary with hiking as the main activity in mind. True adventurers go on multi-day hikes such as the Tok Tokkie Trail or the Fish River Canyon hike. Hikes will take you across stunning landscapes and to breathtakingly beautiful viewpoints, perfect for a refreshing drink while enjoying the views. You don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy a Namibia hiking tour: there is a hike for every fitness level. Learn more about Hiking Tours!

A spectacular highlight on any guided trip or self-drive tour – leave the rest of the world behind and take to the skies in a hot air balloon. Hot air balloon trips are offered in the Sossusvlei region of the Namib Desert and can be incorporated in private and tailor-made itineraries. There is nothing that quite compares to seeing the vastness of the Namib at sunrise, floating across the mighty ocean of sand dunes. Back on the ground, a champagne breakfast awaits you. Cape and Namibia Adventure

A great tour with an action packed itinerary. A couple of long travel days but that’s to be expected in such a vast country. We saw and experienced a wide range of environments and activities in a very short time frame. Our guide was excellent! Very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We were really looked after.

Namibia Nomad Tour

Namibia Nomad

Absolute Africa Southern and Eastern Africa Overland Camping 2 tours on 2 different trucks that has left us wanting more. Tour 1: June 2016 "Namibia Nomad" 21 days from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe to Cape Town, SA on Eeyore. Tour 2: July 2016 "Week in the Gorilla Lands" 8 days from Entebbe, Uganda to Kigali, Rwanda on Shaggy. Tour 1: We joined this trip in Victoria Falls, the truck had already been travelling for several weeks so the group was well established. At this time a couple of people left and 3 of us joined making the total number on board 14. There were 5 of the original 11 that had started in Kenya and that were travelling all the way to Cape Town. If you are contemplating doing the 73 days my advice would be to book it as you will never regret the experience you will get on an adventure like this. With only 14 on board we had plenty of room to spread out, move around and keep more gear at hand on the truck – at this stage I'm thinking 16 would be about perfect. On this leg the camping grounds and supermarkets were good (a big improvement on those further north I was told). All but two of the camp sites had hot water, most had wifi and a couple even had free wifi. Things were good on board, we all got along ok and we saw some incredible things and visited some great game parks. The scenery and climate changes as we headed south and the optional excursions were good. On arriving in the Cape it was hard to say goodbye. Highlights of Tour 1 Game drive in Chobe National Park. Etosha National Park - the waterhole on the 2nd night. Sleeping under the stars at Spitzkoppe. Sand boarding at Swakopmund. Tour 2: We joined this tour in Entebbe, Uganda with about 8 others. My initial thoughts were what a large group this was as with the newbies we were 24 and within days would be at 28, the trucks maximin. My previous thoughts from the 1st tour were that anything over 16 would be too many but this proved to be wrong. With the truck full everybody packed a little better and kept personal stuff closer at hand. More attention was given to packing tents, rolling bed rolls and packing the truck. The fridge was well organised by everyone having a named plastic container to store any food they had. The camp duties seemed easier and all in all I believe the full truck functioned better than the half full truck we had experienced earlier. The campsites and accommodation through Uganda were pretty basic - hot water was a luxury and in Kisoro power and running water was sporadic. Into Rwanda things got a little better and Red Rocks Camp was one of my over all favourites from either tour. The Gorilla's were by far the highlight on this trip but the Genocide Memorial provided a defining moment. Surprisingly enough after only eight days it was harder to say goodbye to this truck than it had been to finish the tour in Cape Town. Standing in the drive way of Discovery Lodge in Kigali waving good bye to our truckies will be a memory I will keep for years to come. Our thanks goes out to our guides and drivers, Vee & Dave and Joe & Patrick. Highlights of tour 2 River cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The village walk going to lake Mutanda after the coffee tour in Kisoro. By far the Gorilla encounter in the Bwindi National park. Becoming more aware of the Genocide that took place in Rwanda and the visit to the Genocide Memorial. My tips: If you can choose which way you do the trip travelling North to South would be much more enjoyable. If you are booking stages like we did make sure you know what comes before and after – for example you can add an additional stage to your existing trip (we had the time and would have loved to add 3 days to our Gorilla adventure to experience Tanzania for example). You need your own plates and cutlery, adding a Thermos to this will allow you to enjoy hot drinks on the long travel days. A named hard plastic "snap lock" container to store your food in the small fridge on board will be priceless. We brought locally (PEP) blankets and pillows for greater comfort in the tent and on the truck. A sleeping bag liner is great for the warm nights but a sleeping bag is essential for the colder ones. It seems silly to talk about thermals in Africa but if you are travelling in the colder months you will need these including beanie, scarf and gloves for the colder nights, the early starts and especially the early morning game drives. Some of the "travel days" are slow & long so be prepared with cards, games, videos or a good book. You can charge your electronic devices on the truck but only while it is moving, when the truck is full pressure can go on the 6 - 8 power points available at the front of the truck. Dust can be a problem (you are crossing deserts after all) so consider snap lock bags for cameras etc and perhaps dust masks for the bad days. Roadside bathroom stops are a reality, make sure you have your own toilet paper and don’t be precious. Hygiene is really important and the truck will generally have hand sanitiser on board, but have your own as well. Go with an open mind and be prepared to get involved (it really is good fun). Leave nothing but footprints. As stated in the introduction to this post we are left with no illusion that we will be back to Africa before long and for that we thank Absolute Africa for a fantastic experience and highly recommend them to anyone considering an overland camping adventure.

Southern Africa Highlights National Geographic Journeys Tour

Southern Africa Highlights National Geographic Journeys

Overall we had a good time, but do not waste your money booking Victoria Falls with G Adventures. We were a group of four travelling as part of 12 - 14 people for 21 days. Started in Cape Town, then on to Kruger National Park, Karongwe Private Game Reserve, Namibia, including Etosha National Park and then onto Victoria Falls. The transportation was the most disappointing aspect of this trip. The driver drove to fast for the dirt roads in Namibia, we hit a lot of dips which made us get air and then get slammed back into our seats. We had our seat belts on, luckily. My husband got the worst of it, he could not even go on the game drives in Etosha the next day. He had to stay in bed on pain killers to elevate the pain. We had a 15 year old young man who complained about his back until Victoria Falls due to the Roads and another who had to spend a day in the passenger seat by the driver again due to the day before and the bad driving. They tried to justify the speed saying it would be worst if we slowed down, we insisted and the driver slowed down and man what a different, was so much better. We also though based on our itinerary showing Windhoek to Victoria Falls we were on a direct flight to Victoria Falls. Wrong, we had to get up and be gone from the hotel at 5:00 a.m. to get to the airport for a flight to Johannesburg, 2 hour wait before continuing onto Victoria Falls. There was a direct flight to Victoria Falls which left 5 minutes before our flight to Johannesburg. So disappointing as by the time we arrived at the hotel and got checked in we only had a few hours in the evening. The cost of purchasing this trip from G Adventures is not worth it. Booking it ourselves would of saved us time and money. Do your research and go on your own and enjoy the trip. We felt rushed once we arrived as we only had one full day to enjoy this magnificent place.

What people love about Namibia And South Africa Tours

The tour was just amazing, well organized and the guides were great.
The CEO was a fantastic asset for the group, very competent, experienced, caring and reassuring in every circumstance. I believe that's what makes a difference in any tour. The tour pace was a bit too fast but expected since we covered something like 3000 km in 11 days. Overall it was a great tour.
Pappa G was more than just a guide, he was part of the group. Knowledgeable, fun and friendly, he is a pleasure to travel with

10 Best African Countries for Safari

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/mammals/" title="mammal">mammal</a> species. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

tour south of namibia

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

tour south of namibia

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

tour south of namibia

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu.
