Live: Major A303 delays after crash closes road

There is slow traffic heading westbound this morning (December 1)

A stretch of the A303 is closed by a serious crash this morning (December 1) following a crash. According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, a vehicle overturned near Quarley - located around eight miles east of Amesbury and Stonehenge.

The closure is in place heading westbound between the turn off for Andover and the A338 Salisbury Road. It was first reported at around 9.30am and delays are now building.

Inrix says: "A303 westbound closed, delays due to serious accident, overturned vehicle involved from Andover turn off (Quarley) to A338 Salisbury Road (Cholderton)."

Inrix says: A303 Westbound closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident, overturned vehicle involved from Quarley turn off (Quarley) to Parkhouse Corner (Cholderton). Congestion to westbound on the B3084 heading towards Dinky Diner.

A303 reopens eastbound

The latest log from Inrix says: 2A303 Westbound closed due to serious accident, overturned vehicle involved from Quarley turn off (Quarley) to Parkhouse Corner (Cholderton). Congestion to westbound on the B3084 heading towards Dinky Diner.

"Sensors indicate eastbound is open but westbound remains closed."

The latest update from Inrix says: "A303 in both directions closed, delays due to serious accident, overturned vehicle involved from Andover turn off (Quarley) to A338 Salisbury Road (Cholderton).

"Sensors show both sides of the road are now closed."

Motorists urged to avoid area

Amesbury Police say: "Please be aware that the A303 near Thruxton Aerodrome is currently closed in both directions following a serious RTC.

"The road is likely to be closed for the foreseeable future. Please avoid the area."

A303 Traffic: Closure leads to long delays on A34 and roads in Winchester as drivers divert

Drivers are being warned of delays to journeys on the A303 in Hampshire due to a scheduled road closure.

The eastbound carriageway between the Junction for Winchester/A34 and the junction for Overton Road/Popham Airfield has been closed for resurfacing until Monday morning.

Motorists are being told to divert via the A34 to Winchester where they should join the M3 northbound.

Delays have been reported on the approach to the closure as well as on the A34 and local roads.

Traffic Monitoring Service, TomTom, reports delays upwards of 10 minutes on the A303 as traffic queues to leave the carriageway.

There are also delays of 10 minutes on the A34 on approach to Junction 9 for the M3.

Local roads, including Romsey Road, Andover Road and Chilbolton Avenue in Winchester are also queuing as motorists divert.

There are also 20 minutes of delays on the M3 southbound due to congestion as drivers head to the South Coast to enjoy the good weather.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the A303

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the A303 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the A303 will be reinstated shortly.

A30 surfacing west of Crewkerne. A shambles with traffic control, traffic stopped back to Crewkerne town centre westbound (mile and a half) and at least 1 mile eastbound. This road was scheduled to be closed on 23rd when in fact no works were carried out and which users were obviously expecting. The delays on this extremely busy road at this extremely busy time are entirely unacceptable, not least without any warning: a) the road surface did not need any repair at all, b) spraying tar and covering with a layer of chips in hot weather is a complete waste of time and money and leads to damage to vehicles from chips and tar. c) this type of treatment has never achieved any lasting improvement to the surface. d) with at least 100 vehicles at any one time sitting for some 40 minutes or more, the cost in fuel and CO2 and time wasted is unbelievable. This entire excercise will have achieved nothing whatsoever except to waste a large amount of time and money. There are many roads in this county which DO require attention which they are not getting and the A30 at this point is not one of them.

I asked for traffic on the A303. You showed me the A30!

A30 is a nightmare, have been stuck an hour now and not moving!! We continued on our journey after reading you report had been quoting a 10 min delay!! Kindly update this info for other road users.

Somerset floods: Train lines reopen but A303 still shut

Flooding following Monday's heavy rain is continuing to cause disruption across the West.

The A303 in Somerset is closed in both directions between the A37/A372 junction at Podimore and the A3088 roundabout at Cartgate.

National Highways said it is likely the road will remain closed for "some time" and advised motorists to avoid the area.

Some Somerset schools either opened late on Tuesday or are still closed.

Network Rail confirmed on social media that trains will start returning to schedule now the floodwater on the railway is receding.

Trains between Bristol and Swindon were cancelled earlier on Tuesday.

Great Western Railway (GWR) previously said services between Bristol Parkway and Swindon, and Westbury and Taunton were affected by the flooding.

The Environment Agency said multiple flood warnings remain in place following heavy rainfall, particularly in south Somerset, while Somerset Council added it is expecting further "significant rainfall on Thursday".

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council's lead member for transport, told the BBC the authority was called out to more than 245 incidents on Monday related to flooding, a higher number than during Storm Ciarán last month despite less rain this week.

Mr Rigby said the council is in a "much more difficult spending round" this year and he will "fight hard to defend" the flooding budget in the face of cuts.

He said: "I would love to have a greater budget for highways maintenance but unfortunately the reality of the fact is we're in a much more difficult spending round this year.

"I would love to say there won't be any further cuts... but the chances of there being more money, in any local authority, are pretty slim."

Mr Rigby urged drivers to respect road closures and said: "You end up becoming another issue which the emergency services have to deal with."

GWR said flooding had caused significant disruption on Monday and advised people not to travel between Bristol and Exeter or on any trip between London Paddington and Devon or Cornwall.

The company said: "We are expecting disruption between London Paddington and Somerset, Devon and Cornwall into Tuesday morning as floods subside."

On Monday night railway passengers at Bristol Temple Meads reported long delays and "chaos" .

James Davis, from GWR, said: "We still have flooding on the line between Taunton and Westbury - so no service able to go through our usual route which would take you up towards Reading and into London if you're travelling further afield.

"I'm pleased to say the line has now reopened between Taunton and Bristol, we are able to divert some trains through that area and then on into London.

"With the number of trains we were not able to run yesterday evening and with other services in the north of our network between Bristol parkway which would normally go towards South Wales and Bristol Parkway and then into London - those services are also being diverted into Bristol Temple Meads."

'Significant rain to come'

A spokesman for Somerset Council said: "Our teams were extremely busy responding to reports of flooding across multiple parts of the county yesterday and the recovery and clear-up work continues today.

"Highways teams responded to hundreds of flood incidents - we had 518 enquiries related to flooding, drainage issues and landslips, and teams will be working throughout the rest of this week clear gullies, drains and road surfaces of mud and debris.

"We are expecting significant rain again on Thursday, with another yellow weather warning in place so our teams are preparing for this too as well as continuing the recovery process."

A303 reopens after serious car and lorry crash in Somerset

The crash took place in the early hours of this morning (November 17)

A stretch of the A303 in Somerset was closed following a serious crash overnight. It involved a car and a lorry, and took place at around 1.45am this morning (November 17).

The road was closed in both directions between the A358 for Ilminster and the A356. It reopened and traffic returned to normal by around 1pm.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix says: "Traffic easing, accident cleared on A303 in both directions from A356 (Prophet's Lane / Crewkerne turn off, Bower Hinton) to A358 (Southfields roundabout, Ilminster). The road has re opened before 13:00."

The latest Inrix log reads: "A303 in both directions closed due to accident from A356 (Prophet's Lane / Crewkerne turn off, Bower Hinton) to A358 (Southfields roundabout, Ilminster)."

Man rushed to hospital

Avon and Somerset Police say: "We were called at around midnight today (Friday 17 November) to the A303 near South Petherton following a report of a collision between two vehicles, one of which was parked.

"One man was taken to hospital, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life changing.

"The road was closed while emergency services attended and vehicles were recovered."

National Highways says: "The A303 in Somerset is closed in both directions between the A358 (Ilminster) and the A356 due to a serious collision involving a car and a lorry.

"The incident is being led by Avon and Somerset Police who are carrying out collision investigation works. National Highways contractors are also assisting with traffic management."

ISTANBUL (AP) — Muslims around the world celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holiday Wednesday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. But events were overshadowed by the worsening crisis in Gaza and Israel’s expected military offensive in Rafah city after six months of war.

“We should not forget our brothers and sisters in Palestine,” one imam, Abdulrahman Musa, said in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. “They have been subjected to unjustified aggression and a lot of violence (as) the world is watching in silence.”

In a holiday message, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent support to Gaza, which he called a “bleeding wound on the conscience of humanity.”

In Istanbul, some of the thousands of worshipers at the Aya Sofya Mosque carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of residents of Gaza, where the United Nations warns that more than a million people are at threat of imminent famine and little aid is allowed in.

Inside Gaza, there was little joy. Palestinians in the refugee camp of Jabaliya near Gaza City mourned loved ones among the over 33,000 killed in Israel’s offensive in response to Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7 attack in Israel.

Om Nidal Abu Omeira sat alone among bombed-out buildings and wept on the grave of her mother, son-in-law, and grandson. All were killed in Israel’s offensive.

“They (the children) keep saying, ‘I miss my father, where is he?’ I tell them that he’s in heaven,” she told The Associated Press. “They start crying, and then I start crying with them.”

Elsewhere, people were grateful for the plenty they had after a month of fasting and reflection. Before the holiday, markets around the world teemed with shoppers. Residents poured out of cities to return to villages to celebrate with loved ones.

In Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, nearly three-quarters of the population were traveling for the annual homecoming known locally as “mudik.”

“This is a right moment to reconnect, like recharging energy that has been drained almost a year away from home,” said civil servant Ridho Alfian.

Jakarta’s Istiqlal Grand Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, was flooded with devotees. Preachers in their sermons called on people to pray for Muslims in Gaza.

“This is the time for Muslims and non-Muslims to show humanitarian solidarity, because the conflict in Gaza is not a religious war, but a humanitarian problem,” said Jimly Asshiddiqie, who chairs the advisory board of the Indonesian Mosque Council.

In Berlin, worshipers reflected the world, coming from Benin, Ghana, Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.

“It’s a day where we feel grateful for everything we have here, and think and give to those who are poor, facing war and have to go hungry,” said Azhra Ahmad, a 45-year-old mother of five.

In Pakistan , authorities deployed more than 100,000 police and paramilitary forces to maintain security at mosques and marketplaces.

In Malaysia, ethnic Malay Muslims performed morning prayers at mosques nationwide just weeks after socks printed with the word “Allah” at a convenience store chain sparked a furor. Many found it offensive.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for unity and reconciliation, saying no groups should be sidelined based on religion or any other reason.

In Russia, worshipers gathered as their leaders vowed loyalty to fellow citizens amid tensions following last month’s attack by an extremist group on a music hall outside Moscow in which 130 people were killed. The Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate claimed responsibility.

“As our country’s president, Vladimir Putin, said, terrorism has neither a nationality nor a religion, the chairman of the Council of Muftis in Russia said. “We call to unite against the threat, against those dark forces.”
