The 7 Best San Francisco Boat Tours

Take in the city's major sights by water with one of these excursions.

Best San Francisco Boat Tours

Courtesy of Bay Voyager

Enjoy a thrilling ride past some of San Francisco's top landmarks on this boat tour from Bay Voyager.

It's no secret that many of San Francisco 's most iconic landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge , Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf , are best seen from the water. Because of this, there are a variety of boat tours – from sunset sails to whale watching excursions – for San Francisco visitors to choose from. To help you narrow down your search, U.S. News relied on expert input and traveler opinion to determine the seven best San Francisco boat tours.

Bay Voyager – Touch of Gold Excursion

If you're looking for an adventurous way to tour the bay (and don't mind getting a little wet), consider this 90-minute tour from Bay Voyager. After boarding the 12-person rigid-inflatable boat, you'll zip under the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, passing Alcatraz, Fort Point and more landmarks along the way. You'll also enjoy expert commentary from your captain – a particular highlight for reviewers. Another high point? Observing the sea lions up close at Pier 39. Tickets start at $99 for adults and $69 for children ages 5 to 9. Departure times vary by day but may be available at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. Evening twilight cruises are also available, as are Alcatraz combo tickets.

[ View & Book Tickets .]

Adventure Cat Sailing – Alcatraz Bay Sail

This 90-minute boat tour focuses on the history of Alcatraz – a former federal prison that housed some of history's most dangerous felons. Though you won't actually stop at Alcatraz Island, you will sail around the prison for an intimate look at its grounds before passing other San Francisco landmarks, such as the Ferry Building Marketplace and Coit Tower . Throughout the tour, you'll enjoy live commentary from the crew – a highlight for reviewers. The tour departs from Pier 39 at 10 a.m. Thursday through Saturday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $25 for kids ages 6 to 12. Kids 5 and younger ride for free. Adventure Cat Sailing also offers sunset cruises, among other options.

San Francisco Whale Tours – Golden Gate Whale Watch

San Francisco's whale activity has been on the rise, making a whale watching tour a smart choice for your next trip. The Golden Gate Whale Watch tour takes you into the bay to see humpback whales, harbor seals, dolphins, porpoises and other sea life that may be swimming just off the shore. This 2 1/2-hour excursion, which is available from March through October, departs at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets start at $45 for adults, $35 for children and $40 for students, seniors and military members. Patrons call this tour awesome and incredible, though some express disappointment with the small number of whales spotted. If you're visiting between November and March, consider the company's Gray Whale Watching Tour.

Red and White Fleet – Golden Gate Bay Cruise

This hourlong tour departs from Fisherman's Wharf and takes you along San Francisco's majestic waterfront for views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and more. Audio commentary is available in 16 languages. You may even encounter wildlife, such as sea lions, harbor porpoises and whales, along the way. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, tours depart daily from 9:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., with reduced hours in the winter months. Tickets start at $34 for adults and $25 for youths ages 5 to 17. Children 4 and younger tour for free. The Golden Gate Bay Cruise earns mostly flattering praise from reviewers, with some tourists calling it the highlight of their trip. Because this is one of the Red and White Fleet's most popular cruises, the company recommends its California Sunset or Bridge 2 Bridge cruises for those looking for a break from the crowds.

Blue & Gold Fleet – Escape From the Rock

Blue & Gold Fleet's Escape From the Rock cruise takes you on a 90-minute sail around the famous Alcatraz Island. You'll enjoy beautiful scenery and hear audio commentary detailing Alcatraz escape attempts and the various felons who called this former maximum-security prison home. Audio recordings are available in nine languages. The cruise departs at 11 a.m., 1, 3 and 5 p.m. daily from June to August. Tickets start at $42 for adults and $28 for kids ages 5 to 11. Cruisers say this trip provides a variety of great photo opportunities, and they applaud the audio commentary. Sunset cruises and day cruises around the bay are also available.

San Francisco Sailing Co. – Sunset Sail

On this two-hour sunset sail, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, among other sights. Plan to take amazing pictures of the sun setting and the surrounding landscapes during a journey reviewers call lovely and the perfect way to spend an evening. Tickets, which include two glasses of wine, beer, soda or water, start at $65. The tour departs every evening from May through November; specific departure times vary by month. Other tours include a 90-minute day sail and a two-hour weekend cruise.

ACsailingSF – Day Sail

Boating enthusiasts won't want to miss this opportunity to sail on an 84-foot yacht once used in America's Cup. This 2 1/2-hour tour takes visitors through the bay for a close-up view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Sausalito cityfront, among other sights. What's more, participation is encouraged, meaning tourgoers can help the crew hoist and trim the sails and steer the yacht. Tourists give this day sail rave reviews, calling it unique and awesome. Sails are usually offered twice a day Thursday through Sunday, though availability can vary by month. Tickets start at $150 per adult and $75 per child ages 5 to 12; water and snacks are included. Sunset sails and "express" two-hour tours are also available.

We had a fantastic time viewing San Francisco from the water! We got to see the golden gate bridge and Alcatraz - all while drinking to delicious wine. The crew is phenomenal and we had such a great time. I highly recommend riding with them!!

We did this Wine Tasting/Boat Cruise for a team onsite and the feedback across the board was that it was the best onsite activity anyone had ever been to! The sites were incredible and Captain Evan and Brian were amazing at answering questions, pointing out whales and porpoises, and helping to keep the good times rolling! I can't recommend this tour enough!

The owner and crew are wonderful people that want everyone onboard to have a great time. The cruise was nice and leisurely and the ambiance was spectacular.

One of the best experiences my partner and I have had on vacation! Amazing views, great crew, everything was perfect. Loved that it was a smaller boat so it really felt like you're right in the water. Could not recommend more strongly!!

We had a FANTASTIC time on this boat cruise!! The folks on the boat are incredible (as is the full bar) and the views! It was a wonderful way to be a tourist while avoiding the crowds and still seeing the major sites. I actually live in the Bay and will now be recommending this tour to everyone I know. Plus you can’t beat the price!

7 Best San Francisco Boat Tours and Bay Cruises

There are various types of boat cruises you can take in San Francisco. They mostly differ in the boat type and the cruise duration.

There are smooth sailing and stylish catamaran boats (my favorite!), bigger double-decker boats, sailboats, and private yachts.

Some cruises offer a combo with a visit to Alcatraz Island to tour the prison, some offer food and drinks like brunch or dinner cruises, while some are just sightseeing cruises.

Below are the best cruise offerings in different categories selected after careful reviews and my personal experiences, having lived in San Francisco for 20+ years.

All of them are great, and you can pick one based on your group’s interests. You can pick a combo tour with Alcatraz, a sunset cruise, a brunch cruise, a dinner cruise, or just a day sightseeing cruise.

Alternatively, if you are short on time and only have one or two days in San Francisco , I highly recommend taking a San Francisco city tour , as it can cover a lot more than you can explore on your own.

1. Daytime Cruises

Daytime Bay Cruise

One of the most popular San Francisco water activities is a daytime cruise on the bay. If you're lucky you'll get to soak in some rays while viewing Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the SF city skyline from your boat's outdoor viewing deck.

>> Check ticket availability for all dates on GetYourGuide

Several tour companies run these cruises, and they vary in price and duration. All of them take you under the Golden Gate and close enough to the bay's islands to snap fantastic photos. This water activity is safe for the whole family, as there are also indoor seating and viewing areas available. Tours range from 1 to 2 hours, so you can still enjoy a full day of sightseeing or wandering around the city.

>> More detail on my favorite bay cruises

2. Dinner Cruises

If you enjoy going out for a night of dinner, drinks, and dancing, why not do it on a bay cruise? Take your romantic date night that extra step to include a sunset and views of the twinkling city lights. The dinner itself will be a three-course California-style meal made with fresh, local ingredients.

Your cruise will depart from Pier 3 with views of the Bay Bridge, then take you cruising past Alcatraz Island and out under the Golden Gate Bridge. After enjoying your gourmet dinner, dance away to the DJ entertainment for the rest of your 2.5-hour tour.

>> Find out more about this popular evening tour

3. Sunset Cruises

In addition to the dinner cruises, you will also find a variety of sunset cruises on the water. Most are 2-hour cruises that take you under the Golden Gate Bridge and all around the SF Bay. These cruises leave from Fisherman's Wharf once each night.

My favorite is the one offered by the Red & White Fleet. Their cruise leaves from Pier 43 1/2. In addition to the incredible bay views, it offers snacks and drinks for purchase. This casual cruise also has both indoor and outdoor seating.

4. Ferries to Sausalito & Tiburon

Sausalito Ferry in SF

Sausalito and Tiburon are both cute waterfront towns located across the bay to the north of San Francisco. They make for lovely day visits where you can do a little shopping and grab lunch by the water.

To board a ferry to Sausalito, head to Pier 41 in Fisherman's Wharf. The schedule changes by season, so check ahead for times. The ride is half an hour and takes you by Alcatraz Island and toward the Golden Gate Bridge.

>> More about the ferries to Sausalito

The scenic ferry ride to Tiburon also leaves from Pier 41 and will take 30 to 45 minutes. This route will bring you closer to Angel Island.

>> More about the ferries to Tiburon

Both destinations have a commuter ferry that leaves from the Ferry Building at Pier 1. It is a bit shorter of a ride, and offers earlier departure times than the tourist ferry.

>> More details about our most popular ferries around the bay

5. Kayaking

Kayaking SF

One of the more unique San Francisco water activities is to hit the bay in your own tiny vessel! With City Kayak, you can either rent a kayak or paddle board by the hour, or join one of their group trips for beginner, intermediate, or advanced paddlers.

If you choose to rent, you'll head out onto the bay with recommended routes for where to go and what to see. If you join a trip, the guides will make sure you're comfortable with your paddling skills, then take you out to McCovey Cove, towards downtown, Treasure Island, or the Golden Gate Bridge, depending on your level.

City Kayak is located at Pier 40 in South Beach Harbor. Don't be fooled by the pier number—it is not close to Pier 39 in Fisherman's Wharf, but rather south of the Ferry Building near Oracle Park.

Strap on your water shoes and sports gear, and a windbreaker for afternoon rides, and enjoy your water adventure!

>> Visit City Kayak's site for more details

6. Ferry to Visit Alcatraz

Alcatraz Water Tours

The only way to get to this world-famous San Francisco attraction is by boat. The 20-minute ride to Alcatraz Island is fun and scenic.

Once you disembark, you and your fellow passengers will receive a short introduction as a group, then walk up the hill to pick up your individual audio guides and start the self-paced tour.

Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours exploring the prison and island, and once you're done, you can take any ferry back to SF.

>> Save on your tickets by buying the Alcatraz & Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour combo

All of the Alcatraz ferries leave from Pier 33 in Fisherman's Wharf. You'll want to book your ticket ahead of time, as this attraction is extremely popular. There's a good breeze on the water, so bundle up to enjoy the beautiful ride.

>> More about the day tour of Alcatraz

7. Whale Watching

Whale Watching in SF

San Francisco is a fantastic place to go whale watching, as you'll find different species migrating just off the shore of its Pacific coast nearly all year long. The only time you may not see a lot of whales is from mid-November to mid-December.

Otherwise, depending on the season, you'll spot humpback, gray, sperm, killer, or blue whales coming up for air, to feed, or to play. In addition, dolphins, porpoises, sea otters, and sea lions can always be seen in these waters.

All whale watching tours leave from Fisherman's Wharf. The cruise will take you along SF's northern waterfront, then under the Golden Gate Bridge and out to the Pacific Ocean, where you will venture between 3 and 8 miles out looking for whales.

>> More tips on whale watching in San Francisco

8. Paddle Boarding

On the other side of the bay, Sea Trek is another trusted company that offers hourly stand-up paddle board and kayak rentals, as well as guided tours. Their kayaking trips range from a couple of hours, to all day, to evening and overnight.

Their paddle board tours are half-day adventures that allow you to get some exercise and engage with nature in a fun way.

Sea Trek is located at the Bay Model in Sausalito, across the Golden Gate Bridge to the north of San Francisco. They will provide all the equipment, including life jackets, and professional instructors to help train beginners.

Children of any age can kayak together with an adult, and the company launches from a dock designed especially for kayak and paddle board access, so you can stay safe and dry.

>> Visit their site for additional details

9. Wine Tasting Cruise

One of the most relaxing San Francisco water activities is the wine tasting cruise. This is a fantastic way to enjoy SF views, a bit of nature, and Northern California wines all in one.

This 1.5-hour tour departs from Pier 39 and typically takes you to the Golden Gate Bridge, around Alcatraz, and back along the city's waterfront to the Ferry Building. Enjoy the ride on a comfy seat in the climate-controlled cabin or on the covered outdoor deck.

Your captain will provide commentary about the landmarks you see, while your bartender will serve up the local reds or whites you want to taste. There is a full bar for those who are in the mood for something else.

One complimentary drink is included on the sunset option; otherwise, the tastings and snacks are for purchase onboard.

This wine tasting cruise is offered at various times on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

>>  Check for ticket availability for this wine tasting cruise

10. Special Holiday Cruises

4th of July Fireworks

San Francisco hosts large, beautiful fireworks displays over the bay waters on both Fourth of July and New Year's Eve holidays. Boarding a bay cruise on those nights is one of the best ways to get front-row seats, and watching the colorful shows overhead is truly an unforgettable experience.

For either Fourth of July or New Year's Eve, you have several cruise options to choose from. A variety of companies, including the Hornblower, Blue and Gold, Red and White Fleet, and others, offer different packages.

Many include dinner and drinks, and DJs or live entertainment. Some are geared towards families, and others are black-tie affairs. You decide how you want to spend your incredible night out on the water.

12 Amazing San Francisco Experiences Found Only On The Waterfront

sf water tour

  • Destinations
  • San Francisco
  • United States

Approaching San Francisco by water is unforgettable. The city climbs seven hills onshore, rising sharply from San Francisco Bay. Twenty-first century and Victorian architecture stand side-by-side. Green parks dot the landscape.

In the bay, sailboats and kayaks dodge passenger and cargo vessels. Passenger ferries crisscross the bay carrying commuters and tourists. Tour boats stop at Alcatraz. Cruise ships wait in the exquisite cruise ship terminal. Passengers, luggage, and supplies are loaded for the journey under the Golden Gate. Fishing boats come and go with the tide. This is San Francisco’s beating heart, the waterfront — Embarcadero.

storm coming in over the embarcadero.

What’s An Embarcadero?

San Francisco’s eastern waterfront, the Embarcadero, is a harbor and a roadway skirting San Francisco Bay. Embarcadero means “the place to embark” in Spanish. The Embarcadero seawall was constructed on reclaimed wetlands, holding back seawater and creating dockage. Construction began in the 1860s and concluded in the 1920s.

Piers jut out into the bay along the almost 3.5 miles of city street and waterfront. Once one of the world’s busiest seaports, San Francisco received and shipped goods from around the globe to inland California and the rest of the country. Today, most piers house eateries, shopping, bars, tourist attractions, event centers, and parking garages. Today, most cargo ships go to Oakland to load and unload.

Exploring the waterfront along Embarcadero uncovers a sampler of all the city is known for — maritime life, seafood, wine, history, art, music, beautiful bridges, diversity, and iconic vistas.

San Francisco has many, many unique things to do. I’ve scouted out 12 experiences found only on the waterfront. The list begins at the north end of the Embarcadero and continues to the southeast, ending at Oracle Park. Of course, you can start your tour anywhere along the route. It’s about 3.5 miles one way.

Christmas season in Union Square and the skating rink in San Francisco-California-USA.

1. Cable Car Lazy Susan

I recommend starting your waterfront tour at Union Square by boarding the Powell/Hyde Cable Car line and riding it to the bay. It’s a roller coaster thrill ride, especially when you realize the engine and the brakes are two blocks of wood gripping a steel cable moving under the pavement. It’s truly exciting and one of the most scenic rides in town. The Powell/Hyde line passes some of San Francisco’s most recognizable sites. However, the most jaw-dropping is the waterfront as you make the final downhill run to San Francisco Bay.

At the end of the line, a cable car turnaround is a captivating sight. It’s great fun to watch the completely man-powered process and a lovely way to arrive at the start of your expedition.

Take a seat on one of the benches by the turnaround and watch how the cars are rotated 360 to begin the arduous return journey uphill to Union Square. The cable cars are a great photo op. So is the view behind you of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge.

View of the Hyde Street in direction North in San Francisco on September 17, 2015. This view provides a nice view to the streets of San Francisco.

2. History, Ships, Swimmers, And Photo Ops

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is perfect for your waterfront excursion. You’ll learn about the lives of those that lived, worked, and escaped to and from San Francisco Bay — sailors, soldiers, craftsmen, dreamers, wealthy merchants, servants, and enslaved people.

You’ll be captivated for hours at Hyde Street Pier , San Francisco Maritime Museum , and Aquatic Park . San Francisco’s long and colorful maritime culture is preserved and presented in a park, an old bath house, and sailing vessels tied to the dock. You will also find a sand beach, a swimming cove, and the opportunity to picnic with a Golden Gate Bridge view.

3. Get To Know A Fisherman

San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf is easily the most popular destination in San Francisco and one of the busiest on the West Coast. For many generations, the wharf has been home to the Bay’s fishing fleet. The tradition continues today.

Fisherman’s Wharf can be a navigational challenge, filled with tourist attractions, buskers, eateries, bars, and people. It’s a bit of a circus at times. When several tour buses unload simultaneously, the streets are crowded.

Avoid the crowds by stepping off the main drag and exploring the fishing docks. The quietest time of day is early morning. Swarms of tourists are almost non-existent. Fishermen are at work preparing for a day’s catch. During crab season, colorful crab traps are piled high. The docks are busy; watch out for forklifts. There are lots of things to do in the area.

Sea Lions 'hauling out' on K-Dock at Pier 39.

4. Get To Know A Sea Lion

Pier 39 ‘s K-Dock has been home to sea lions since the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. Sea lions began “hauling out” on K-Dock after the 6.9 shaker. It’s now a colony for the loud, playful, and sometimes comical marine mammals. So why didn’t they return to their pre-earthquake home? There is no definitive answer, but marine biologists believe it’s the plentiful food supply in the bay and shelter from predators and storms. No matter the reason, sea lions are now welcome residents. Visit the Sea Lion Center on Pier 39 and get a peek at the slippery clowns on the Sea Lion Webcam .

5. Get To Know A Jellyfish

Aquarium of the Bay is a family-friendly way to soak-up San Francisco at Pier 39. More than 20,000 local sea creatures (including jellyfish) will delight and astonish you. In the glass tunnels passing through the enormous tanks, you might find yourself eye-to-eye with a shark.

“The Aquarium of the Bay’s mission is to protect, restore, and inspire conservation of San Francisco Bay and its watershed, from the Sierra to the Sea.”

Pro Tip: At Pier 39, you can book bay cruises, cycling tours, go whale watching, enjoy musical and acrobatic performances, shop, and feast on local seafood, wine, and beer.

Interactive Science Museum Exploratorium on Embarcadero Street.

6. Meet Your Inner Nerd

Do yourself a favor and visit the Exploratorium — a fun and exciting multi-generational “public learning laboratory for exploring the world through science, art, and human perception.” It’s hard to explain, but the experiences will be remembered for a lifetime.

For 50 years, this institution has been creating “explorers” in the arts and sciences. I’m one of them. Hands-on exhibits change frequently, so there is always something new to experience, like how sensitive a seismograph is by stamping your feet or how our eyes play tricks on us with the Bird in a Cage experience.

Ferry Building Food Tour by Edible Excursions.

7. Go To The SF Bay Crossroads

The Ferry Building Marketplace is a bustling crowd of commuters, shoppers, and tourists from early morning until late evening. But there’s more here than a transportation center; it’s a shopping center, restaurant mall, and a farmers market. Wine bars, wine shops, cheesemongers, bakers, coffee, tea, and every genre of food imaginable line the corridors of the great hall.

Above the crowd’s heads, a ferry schedule is at the main entrance. It changes with the arrival and departure of my favorite way to travel, ferries. The old-school train station sign makes an interesting clicking sound as the letters and numbers flip over.

This is an ideal place to taste San Francisco. Buy picnic supplies. Bread, cheese, and wine, plus other irresistible munchies, can be enjoyed somewhere along the way or back in your hotel. Oh, and yes this is where you catch a ferry to crisscross the bay.

Bay Bridge, San Francisco.

8. Closeup With A Bridge

The grand San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge bridge connects San Francisco to Oakland. The bridge is beautiful from any distance or angle and makes for spectacular photo ops anytime, day or night. The bridge crosses over Embarcadero. In the area surrounding the bridge, you’ll find public fishing piers. A California Fishing License is not required when fishing from a public pier. So stroll to the end, drop a line in the water, or simply watch the world float by. This area is also home to sculptures, pocket playgrounds, benches, and picnic spots.

Oracle Park - San Francisco Giants ball park.

9. Visit Some Giants

Oracle Park is the multi-time world champion San Francisco Giants’ home. However, the park has more to do than watching a baseball game.

The ocean-view park has a free playground for kids and adults. It’s open on non-game days. You can attend concerts of all genres, non-baseball sports, and Cirque du Soleil throughout the year. Outside on the stadium walls, SF Giants history is carved in stone. Fans worldwide come to the Wall of Fame to pay homage to great players.

Other activities include eating, shopping, and occasionally cooking classes. Kayak into Covey Cove for a “splash hit” catch. Picnic and play catch, commune with locals and Giant fans.

Dungeness Crab on Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco, CA.

10. Eating The Bay

Food in San Francisco is legendary. It’s hard to go wrong along Embarcadero. Be adventurous and have a progressive dinner. Stop in one place for cocktails and appetizers, another for entrees, and a third for coffee and dessert. You can do the same for lunch or brunch.

For an exceptional foodie experience, Edible Excursions has a Ferry Building and Farmers Market Tour I highly recommend. You will sample from vendors inside the building and outside at the farmers market and tour the facility upstairs and down. The building itself is fascinating and the center of ferry transportation across and around the bay.

Street food along the waterfront, San Francisco, CA.

Pro Tip: Take an afternoon break at the Franciscan Crab Restaurant on Pier 43. Between 2 and 5 p.m., the restaurant isn’t as crazily busy as the lunch and dinner rush can be. When you get to the hostess desk, ask for a seat in the bar. The terraced tables face the two-story floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bay. Watch the boat traffic while you sip a glass of wine and munch on a plate of calamari. It’s quiet, and a pair of binoculars are at each table.

11. Sleep On The Waterfront

Harbor Court , a small boutique hotel, is in the perfect location: across the street from the Ferry Building and two blocks from the Embarcadero transit center. I’ve stayed there many times. It’s set in the historic YMCA Building on the Embarcadero. Get a Bay View room for spectacular views of the Bay Bridge Lights and the waterfront. In addition, this location is two blocks from a transit hub for MUNI, BART, and Cable Cars, making it easily accessible via public transit from local airports.

Cycling along Embarcadero - San Francisco waterfront.

12. Getting Around

Walking Embarcadero is my top suggestion. Begin at one end and stroll along, stopping to take in the view, visit an attraction, or take a break for lunch or an afternoon coffee or glass of wine. Streetcars and MUNI buses run up and down Embarcadero frequently. Hail a pedicab or rent a bike if walking doesn’t work for you and your companions.

San Francisco ( SFO ) and Oakland International ( OAK ) are the closest airports for flying to the city.

DON’T DRIVE. It will induce insanity. Take public transit. BART Trains service both airports and will take you directly to the waterfront. The usual ride-share services are fast and inexpensive in the city.

Pro Tip: Get a 1, 3, or 7-Day Visitor Passport . Use it for unlimited rides on Muni, Muni Metro, historic streetcars, and cable cars. A one-day pass is $13. That’s less than two cable car rides.

I’ve mentioned some of the big attractions and some not so big, but there’s plenty more to do and see in this part of San Francisco. Spend some time on the waterfront and you’ll leave your heart in San Francisco.

Despite the weather and having to reschedule The Raccoon Island tour did not disappoint. A big thank you to Shawn, Alejandra and Izzy for the awesome tour. We flew from CA and can't wait to return.

Miguel and Chase were amazing, the raccoons were so cute to see. Great little couples adventure!

Went on the 2.5 hour trip and it was so fun! Great find and amazing stops around the islands. Our tour guide was Alex/ alexandra

Photo of Ashley C.

Sidney was a fantastic guide! Lot of fun packed into this tour between the relaxing pontoon boat ride, kayaking to raccoon island & then also kayaking through the mangroves. One note for planning is the email confirmation says two hours, but it's actually three hours in total. Recommend!

First time in Miami and decided to go kayaking! Great experience. Chase, our guide, was very friendly and informative (also funny). He provided some snacks and beverages (even a fresh coconut). Made it a great experience for us!

Photo of Stefanie E.

This was so fun our guide Chichi was so so sweet and knowledgeable as well as the owners of the company who joined us as well. We first kayaked through the serene mangroves and then headed over to raccoon island. We parked our kayaks on the busy beach front on the island and he showed us where the raccoons typically hang out. He gave us yummy watermelon and cantaloupe and there were also refreshments in a cooler as well. Would definitely do this again- so much fun!

Photo of Abby T.

Had a great time. It was pretty windy and was a work out. It was so pretty! Great views. We didn't see much in the lines of animals. You get out at two different islands/areas that are very rocky. You need shoes of some sort. Happy kayaking!

Photo of Viktoriya M.

Such a fun tour! 2.5 hours on the water exploring mangroves and a little island with raccoons that were super friendly and happy to be fed with watermelon. The crew brought watermelon and cut them for all that wanted to feed raccoons. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable, we would definitely do it again!

World's first hydrogen-powered commercial ferry to run on San Francisco Bay, and it's free to ride

The first hydrogen-powered ferry to operate commercially anywhere in the world is set to begin transporting passengers on San Francisco Bay

SAN FRANCISCO -- The world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial passenger ferry will start operating on San Francisco Bay as part of plans to phase out diesel-powered vessels and reduce planet-warming carbon emissions, California officials said Friday, demonstrating the ship.

The 70-foot (21-meter) catamaran called the MV Sea Change will transport up to 75 passengers along the waterfront between Pier 41 and the downtown San Francisco ferry terminal starting July 19, officials said. The service will be free for six months while it's being run as part of a pilot program.

“The implications for this are huge because this isn’t its last stop," said Jim Wunderman, chair of the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority, which runs commuter ferries across the bay. "If we can operate this successfully, there are going to be more of these vessels in our fleet and in other folks’ fleets in the United States and we think in the world.”

Sea Change can travel about 300 nautical miles and operate for 16 hours before it needs to refuel. The fuel cells produce electricity by combining oxygen and hydrogen in an electrochemical reaction that emits water as a byproduct.

The technology could help clean up the shipping industry, which produces nearly 3% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, officials said. That’s less than from cars, trucks, rail or aviation but still a lot — and it’s rising.

Frank Wolak, president and CEO of the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association, said the ferry is meaningful because it’s hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels.

“The real value of this is when you multiply out by the number of ferries operating around the world,” he said. “There’s great potential here. This is how you can start chipping away at the carbon intensity of your ports.”

Backers also hope hydrogen fuel cells could eventually power container ships.

The International Maritime Organization, which regulates commercial shipping, wants to halve its greenhouse gas releases by midcentury.

As fossil fuel emissions continue warming Earth’s atmosphere, the Biden administration is turning to hydrogen as an energy source for vehicles, manufacturing and generating electricity. It has been offering $8 billion to entice the nation’s industries, engineers and planners to figure out how to produce and deliver clean hydrogen.

Environmental groups say hydrogen presents its own pollution and climate risks.

For now, the hydrogen that is produced globally each year, mainly for refineries and fertilizer manufacturing, is made using natural gas. That process warms the planet rather than saving it. Indeed, a new study by researchers from Cornell and Stanford universities found that most hydrogen production emits carbon dioxide, which means that hydrogen-fueled transportation cannot yet be considered clean energy.

Yet proponents of hydrogen-powered transportation say that in the long run, hydrogen production is destined to become more environmentally safe. They envision a growing use of electricity from wind and solar energy, which can separate hydrogen and oxygen in water. As such renewable forms of energy gain broader use, hydrogen production should become a cleaner and less expensive process.

The Sea Change project was financed and managed by the investment firm SWITCH Maritime. The vessel was constructed at Bay Ship and Yacht in Alameda, California, and All-American Marine in Bellingham, Washington.

Want to see Fall River's historic water tower or the Watuppa ice house? How to get a tour.

sf water tour

FALL RIVER — At the far east end of Bedford Street, a granite tower rises 120 feet to the sky like a turret from a medieval castle. It’s one of Fall River’s most distinctive historic buildings — but kept just out of reach of the public behind a “no trespassing” sign.

That doesn’t mean it’s off-limits, though. The Water Department cares for several historic properties unlike anything else in the city, and anyone can see them — you just need to ask.

“If anybody’s ever interested in a tour, they can contact any of the Water Department numbers," said Paul Ferland, director of Community Utilities.

The city’s standpipe water tower, the old pumping station along the banks of the North Watuppa Pond, the remains of the Watuppa ice house, and what’s left of Spencer Borden’s mansion Interlachen — all of them belong to the public.

“All that area is posted and people aren’t allowed to trespass at their own will, but we do offer guided tours as long as staffing is available to provide those tours,” Ferland said.

Saving history: From churches to mills, these 13 places in Fall River are at risk of losing historic value

Inside the old water tower, Watuppa Pond ice house, Interlachen and more

The city’s water tower stands along Bedford Street, a few hundred feet from Stonehaven Road. Built in 1875, the tower’s interior features a winding staircase leading to a balcony near its top, and it’s capped by a copper roof. It was used to pump water to some of the city's highest-elevated neighborhoods.

Farther down Bedford Street are the city’s 1873 water pumping station and intake house. On Jan. 5, 150 years ago, the city started pumping water from Watuppa Pond through that pump station into the city's water system.

The city's waterworks buildings were constructed at a time when the population was soaring and the city embarked on a major expansion of water lines. The building still contains antique pumping equipment from its early days.

“We’ve invested a fair amount of our money, as well as grant money, to stabilize those buildings to make sure they don’t deteriorate to the point where they wouldn’t be able to be usable in the future if we decided to," said Ferland.

The Cook & Durfee Ice House is visible to drivers headed north on Route 24, perched along the pond’s banks on Interlachen Island. Stone walls about 50 feet high soar above the overgrowth, the only remnants of the business. Built in 1864, the business harvested blocks of ice from the pond and carried them to customers in the city before there was household refrigeration.

Fall River Wonders: What was Spencer Borden's estate Interlachen like, and where was it?

And elsewhere on the island is what's left of Interlachen, an opulent mansion once owned by industrialist Col. Spencer Borden. The estate, dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was once home to a massive neoclassical house, two or three barns, an electrified bell tower, a stable, possibly even a tennis court. The Borden family sold the house in 1926, and within a decade the estate became neglected. It was demolished in 1938. What remains is the foundation — though a careful look can reveal decorative flagstone pavers still embedded in the ground.

All are on property owned by the Water Department around North Watuppa Pond, the city’s protected water supply.

Open house possible in spring; here's how to get a tour

The Water Department has recently completed the construction of its new headquarters on Bedford Street, replacing an aging administration building built in the 1920s. That building will be demolished in spring of 2024. Ferland said he hopes at that time to hold an open house for its new digs along with tours of those historic properties.

But in the meantime — and at any subsequent time — Ferland said if there's enough public interest, he’s happy to schedule public tours of the Water Department’s properties. The one bottleneck is making sure he has the staff to guide visitors. But Ferland said he enjoys using the chance to teach people about Fall River's history and how its water supply works.

The Water Department is available at 508-324-2330 or by emailing [email protected] .

“I like to use any type of tours that I do as an educational moment to try to teach people, when they turn the faucet on, how the water comes out," Ferland said.

“Whenever I go and talk at schools, one of the first questions I ask the students is, ‘How many people have used the product that we make? How many people have used it today?’ Nobody ever raises their hand,” he said, laughing. “Who's washing their hands or going to the bathroom? People just don’t understand what it takes to get the water to their faucet, and then take it after they use it.”
