Guitar Hero World Tour features various controllers shaped like real instruments.
Guitar/Bass Controller [ edit | edit source ]
The guitar/bass controller includes five main points.
- Fret Buttons : These multi-colored buttons are located on the neck of the guitar. A player must hold these while the right color on-screen comes across the strike line. The colors are Green, Red, Yellow, Blue and Orange (in that order). In "Beginner Mode", players can hold down any color, and strike the strum bar when a line comes across the screen.
- Strum Bar : Notes will not play unless the strum bar is used. The strum bar can be clicked up or clicked down. When a note comes across the screen, a player must hold the correct color down, but this will not do anything unless they strum using the strum bar.
- Whammy Bar : Players can use the Whammy bar during sustained notes. It will add a whammy effect to the note. If the note is a "star" note, using the whammy bar will extract star power from it.
- Slider Bar : This new feature allows players to tap instead of using the strum bar. It also allows the player to slide during special "Slide" sections in the game. During these slide sections, the player is not required to strum, instead, they can just hit the fret button, or the corresponding color section of the slider. You can also add effects to sustained notes (which also adds star power, similar to the Whammy Bar).
- Star Power Button/Tilt Sensor : Players can activate star power when they have enough star power stored in the star power meter. To active, players can hit the Star Power button (Select on older models of the Guitar Hero controller) or they can tilt the guitar 90°.
Drum Controller [ edit | edit source ]
The drum controller contains three main points.
- Drum Pads & Cymbals : The drum pads and cymbals are the main focus of the Drum controller. The three pads are Red, Blue and Green, and the cymbals are yellow and orange. Players must hit these on the drum while the notes come across the strike line. During "Freestyle" sections, indicated by wavy lines on the "Highway", players can improvise to rack up points.
- Foot Pedal : While playing, a purple line may appear on the highway. This indicated that the player must use the bass pedal.
- Crashing the Cymbals : To release star power, players must crash the cymbals. These can be used during any note, and that note will automatically be played.
Mic [ edit | edit source ]
The Guitar Hero Mic is a USB mic, and has no buttons. To navigate menus, a controller from the console you are playing on must be used. To activate star power using the mic, the player must tap the top of the mic. Otherwise, the player will just have to sing the correct words into the mic, at the correct pitch.

Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition is a content-filled, expansive mod for Neversoft's Guitar Hero: World Tour .
While the mod includes heaps of new characters and content, the aim is to extend the engine and bring it up to more modern standards and to expand its capabilities.
Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition comes pre-loaded with a wide array of different characters.
These are additional characters, and can be used alongside the default rockers! Rock out with fitting characters from previous Guitar Hero iterations, or get goofy with other Neversoft titles.
Not a fan of the stock World Tour gems on your precious highway? Not a problem! Definitive Edition offers a small selection of different gem themes out of the box.
Drum away with gems from Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock or go old-school with Guitar Hero III notes. A multitude of extra color themes are available as well, and selectable with a visual preview for each!
Ditch X360CE and configure your guitar the right way!
No more painful controller backends or spoofers. From modded guitars to Wiitars, any detected device can be configured in the game's built-in controller binding menu.
One of the biggest features of Definitive Edition is the ability to easily install user-created content!
Jam-pack (pun intended) your mod folder with hundreds of custom characters, selectable instruments, or fill it to the brim with an endless supply of custom songs. Let modding magic flow from your fingertips with a collection of publicly available tools.
Create your dream axe with World Tour's Create-A-Rocker menus, or select from a list of the best guitars before your gig!
Like Guitar Hero III's guitar select, you can now select your desired instrument before entering a show. Select from old favorites, or brand new guitars like modeled versions of controller counterparts!
At long last, multiplayer is back, and better than ever!
Connect to revitalized servers and join members across the globe for a cooperative or competitive experience. Start a band, compete in face-off, or even tag along with local players to shred over the net! Custom characters and songs supported.
Express your creative side with extended Create-A-Rocker capabilities!
Add brand new features to your rocker like nail color, back items, eye tint, and more! Definitive Edition allows you to build a rocker like never before.
Enjoy increased limits, larger caps, and overall freedom. Many restrictions from the game's dated 2009 engine have been lifted for your pleasure!
Utilize features from newer entries (and brand new features) including HO/PO chords and tap chords !

Controllers and controller compatibility

Guitar Hero World Tour band bundle for PlayStation 2 . Image features two "genericaster" guitar controllers , the drum controller with kick pedal and two drum sticks, and a microphone .
This page lists Guitar Hero -branded peripherals , controllers and their controls, as well as serving as a compatibility guide for the various instrumental controllers (including Rock Band -branded controllers/peripherals) compatible with Guitar Hero , Rock Band , and other software.
This information was available on Rock Band 's official website, but as of July 23, 2014, the Rock Band website was no longer available and some of its contents were moved to Harmonix 's website. [1] However, the compatibility lists are still viewable on The Internet Archive. [2] All of the information from that webpage has been compiled into a chart below. This page also provides information on what parts for the controllers are compatible with other controllers, such as cables or battery covers.

Instrumental controllers [ ].
List of official Guitar Hero -branded instrumental controllers for each playable instrument. This list does not include Rock Band instrumental controllers, which can be found on the Rock Band Wiki for guitars , drums , and vocals , or third-party instrumental controllers that were not officially licensed/approved by RedOctane / Activision . [a]
- Nintendo DS peripherals
Gamepads and other controllers [ ]
In addition to guitar controllers, all guitar and bass tracks in Guitar Hero , Guitar Hero II , Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s , Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith are also playable on the game system's standard peripherals (i.e. DualShock 2 on PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 controller on Xbox 360 and Windows, DualShock 3 on PlayStation 3, Wii Remote on Wii, and computer keyboard on Windows/Mac OS X).
Guitar Hero World Tour and newer games lack the use of gamepads except to activate Star Power in Vocals and navigate in menus.
List of controls for each controller type:
- DualShock 2 in guitar mode
- Keyboard & mouse
List of controls for DualShock 2, Xbox 360 controller, and DualShock 3. All fret buttons activate the strum bar on gamepad during songs. There is no separate strum button.
By default, playing standard gamepad controls use the shoulder buttons, triggers, and the bottom interface button to play and auto-strum notes. When playing the PlayStation 2 versions of Guitar Hero , Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , or any of the band-related Guitar Hero games up to Band Hero -styled games ( World Tour , Metallica , Smash Hits , and Van Halen ) there is a trick to switch DualShock 2's controls from gamepad input mode to guitar input mode to press any buttons without overstrumming and manually strum with the D-Pad.
- Guitar Hero : Holding ◂➕ at any time switches DualShock 2 in guitar input mode. Releasing ◂➕ switches it back to gamepad input mode. On the main menu, this can be identified when the Tutorial option is highlightable when a guitar controller input is detected and when it grays out when a guitar controller input is not detected.
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock : Upon booting up the game, hold ◂➕ , then release the ➕ after the first loading screen appears. DualShock 2 controller will now be in guitar input mode, using guitar controls during this gaming session.
- Guitar Hero World Tour , Metallica , Smash Hits & Van Halen : Upon booting up the game, hold ◂➕ , then release the ➕ after the second splash screen appears after the first loading screen is finished. DualShock 2 controller will now be in guitar input mode, using guitar controls during this gaming session unless you (accidentally) hit ✕ instead of R2 for confirming options/menus.
- Guitar Hero 5 & Band Hero : ◂➕ must be held at all times upon booting the game to use the DualShock 2 in guitar input mode. Releasing the ➕ will "disconnect" the Guitar controller, reverting the DualShock 2 back to a DualShock 2. Pressing/holding ◂➕ again after releasing it will not put the DualShock 2 back into guitar input mode.
The Windows and Mac OS X version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , Guitar Hero: Aerosmith , and Guitar Hero World Tour supports computer keyboards and mice as "guitar controllers" and "drums controllers" (in Guitar Hero World Tour ) as well as other guitar and drums controllers that support them and these computer games are bundled with Xbox 360 instrumental controllers. Keyboard and mouse controls are customizable but the default keyboard and mouse controls are listed on the table and in-game images below.
- Notice how the default keyboard guitar controllers are in Lefty Flip . By default, the PC versions of Guitar Hero games are set to Lefty Flip but this can be toggled off and the controls will need to be remapped.
- In Guitar Hero World Tour , keyboard on Drums uses the 4-lane Rock Band -styled drum highway. For 5-lanes, a Guitar Hero drumkit is required.
Besides being attached to a Wii guitar controller to power a Wii guitar controller, the Wii Remote itself can also be used in the Wii version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith with "gamepad" controls. However, other peripherals and attachments for the Wii Remote such as Wii Classic Controllers (including the Pro version) and Wii Nunchuk, as well the GameCube controller, are not supported in these games.
During menu navigations (including the pause menu), the Wii Remote is held upright while during song gameplay, the Wii Remote is held sideways. The sound effects of mishitting notes also output through the Wii Remote's speaker.
Compatibility [ ]
Compatibility chart [ ].
All controllers and peripherals listed below are only compatible with the console they were intended to be used on. For example, a PlayStation 3 Guitar Hero World Tour guitar controller will only work with the PlayStation 3 versions of the games listed below, even though the Xbox 360 version of the controller occupies the same column.
Component compatibility [ ]
- The Guitar Hero World Tour , Guitar Hero 5 , and Band Hero guitar controllers all use the same battery cover.
- They also presumably use the same faceplate.
- Any electronic drumkit can be used with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock by connecting the MIDI output of the drumkit to the MIDI input of the drum control unit.
Compatibility screenshots [ ]
Below is a gallery of images captured from the official Rock Band website's compatibility page. In the case of controllers that are compatible with the exact same software as other controllers, they are listed below as the same image for the sake of saving space.

However, there is a third-party software called Festival Instrument Mapper that allows the use of legacy guitar controllers for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, treated as an Xbox One guitar controller. Warning: While this third-party software does not directly affect Fortnite , this third-party software does not guarantee protection from Fortnite bans as stated by the developers. Use at your own risk. Also, new updates for Fortnite can break compatibility with this software (thus, breaking compatibility with legacy guitars) so update this software when new updates are available for it.

Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition
The game takes the engine and base game content of World Tour by Neversoft and expands it even further with community-made characters, songs, instruments and venues, as well as content backported from prior and later Guitar Hero games, including every song ever featured in the series up to Warriors of Rock .
Since its beta release in 2021, the mod garnered quite some attention thanks to its ability to take in custom band lineups, instrument models and venues, resulting in some rather amusing rosters from countless fictional universes as well as real-world celebrities, from the usual mod staples like CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Thomas the Tank Engine and even Disney Princesses like Snow White as well as the cast of Breaking Bad of all people.
This game provides examples of:
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : The example picture—where badass characters like Kratos and CJ are jamming with a relatively soft-spoken princess like Snow White—are not that uncommon given the wide selection of downloadable rocker models.
- Game Mod : Done in spades, though it could very well amount to its own game considering how it expanded upon World Tour and then some.
- Holiday Mode : Setting the system clock to a certain date will cause its UI to take on a different theme depending on the holiday, be it Valentines, Halloween or Christmas.
- Joke Character : Plenty of them, mostly based on popular internet memes such as the crew member from Among Us and even a rather crudely-modeled depiction of Jesus Christ by WTDE co-developer Zedek.
- Megamix Game : WTDE offers song packs of every Guitar Hero game from the first game to Warriors of Rock as optional downloads on its website, allowing players to turn the game into this.
- Wide-Open Sandbox : While the main story mode for World Tour is intact, the rest of the game and all cheat codes are unlocked from the start, allowing the player to shred around at their leisure.

To activate star power using the mic, the player must tap the top of the mic. Otherwise, the player will just have to sing the correct words into the mic, at the correct pitch. Go to top.

Note: I'm referring to enabling Gamepad Mode similar to Clone Hero ...
