Traffic backups reported on I-65 near Lafayette, Indiana, following solar eclipse

S ignificant traffic delays occurred on Interstate 65 Monday evening as throngs of drivers headed toward the Chicago area after traveling to experience the 2024 solar eclipse in totality.

At around 8:15 p.m., delays exceeding two hours were reported near State Road 18 in the Brookston area, as shown on Google Maps. Images from Indiana Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed solid back-ups near State Route 18 and State Route 25.

Backups were largely reported between Lafayette and Rensselaer, with a few slow spots also further south between Lafayette and Lebanon.

Elsewhere on I-65, traffic was moving steadily.

In a post on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield said traffic was flowing at normal rates as of 7 p.m. in the Lowell area.

"Drivers are reducing speeds (which we love and appreciate!) and although traffic is steady, so far so good on I-65 from Lafayette north to Merrillville," he added. "There are some slow spots as you head north from the Kankakee…"

With the exception of I-65 northbound in the Lafayette area, traffic was clearing across most of the state, INDOT said in a post at 7:39 p.m.

INDOT urged drivers to check its website or the INDOT TrafficWise app for travel conditions.

Monday's solar eclipse, considered a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event, passed through parts of central Indiana and southern Illinois as it moved across North America.

Traffic delays and other issues mark total solar eclipse day

i 65 travel conditions indiana

Authorities on Monday reported traffic crashes and significant road delays across the country as thousands of people flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse – and then made their way home again.

Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were impacted by the flood of drivers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , a vast swath of the country – approximately 115 miles wide, crossing through 13 states – where people were able to view the total eclipse.

Traffic slowed on major highways in Indiana as the eclipse progressed Monday afternoon. State transportation officials posted video showing backups forming on Interstate 65 headed toward Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported. The Courier & Press in Evansville reported delays after the eclipse ended.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine posted on X that traffic on state highways was flowing but rest stops along interstates in the path of totality are at or near capacity.

Perrine said transportation officials planned to shut them down "once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse." One rest stop along I-74 near Veedersburg, northwest of Indianapolis, closed because it had reached maximum capacity from "eclipse viewing traffic."

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and was within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which included parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

"Crews estimate cleanup will take the majority of the day. Expect delays in the area and use extra caution. #trucking #eclipse," said a post on X by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation .

Multiple crashes were reported in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, which hosted several festivities and eclipse viewing events. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota. The wrecks shut down multiple lanes.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement around 9 a.m. local time.

Officials warn drivers of delays, dangers ahead of solar eclipse

In the weeks leading up to the celestial event, officials issued warnings about heavy traffic congestion and the danger of driving during the eclipse , including distracted pedestrians and the sudden change in light conditions. Eclipses have previously been tied with surges in traffic crashes, including fatal collisions.

In New York, extra troopers were staged throughout the entire state, especially in northern counties and cities, such as Buffalo, from which spectators can see a full eclipse, according to the New York State Police .

In Ohio, the state's Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission heavily staffed its toll booths, service plazas and maintenance buildings in anticipation of the eclipse, which it has designated as "a high-volume traffic event" like, for example, Thanksgiving.  The Ohio Emergency Management Agency estimates, for the solar eclipse, between 150,000 and 575,000 travelers will visit the state, which encompasses areas in the path of totality.

During the 2017 eclipse, congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

A 2011 Jeep ran off the road and into a ditch, striking several trees on its passenger side, according to police.

Two female passengers and a driver were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver was awake and alert, but the passengers, 52-year-old Cearmease Evans and 17-year-old Chaise Franklin died at the scene.

Both Evans and Franklin are from Chicago.

The driver had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital, according to police.

It's unknown what led to the Jeep going off the roadway and the crash is under investigation.

The right two lanes of I-65 were closed for several hours following the crash. As of Sunday afternoon, the roadway reopened.

We'll bring more updates to this story as they become available.

Mom accused of fatally neglecting 5-year-old daughter had previous neglect conviction

Mom accused of neglecting 5-year-old to death.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH-TV) — The mom accused in the death of her 5-year-old daughter had a previous history of neglecting her children.

News 8 as of Thursday afternoon did not have specific details about the neglect that led to the death of the 5-year-old girl earlier this week, but we know that Toni McClure was arrested in 2018 for neglecting her children.

A Mooresville Police Department officer in court documents described living conditions inside McClure’s 2018 home as one of the worst living conditions he had seen, with dirt, trash, cigarette butts, and moldy food everywhere. Police also found several dirty kids with diaper rashes.

One of the kids that officers found was a 3-week-old child who was later evaluated by doctors to be failing to thrive and needing food. The Indiana Department of Child Services took custody of the kids.

In that case, McClure took a plea deal in 2020. She served 21 days in jail and was ordered to take parenting classes as part of her probation. She later violated that probation, but was only ordered to pay a fine.

On Tuesday , Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were directed to a mobile home in southwest Indy. They found the 5-year-old girl unresponsive. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died.

The age of the child matches the age of the 3-week-old child from the previous child neglect case, but police have not confirmed if they are the same child.

McClure and her boyfriend, Ryan Smith, were arrested for child neglect resulting in death. Again, the Indiana Department of Child Services took custody of other children who were living in the home.

On Thursday afternoon, it was unclear how or when McClure regained custody of her children from the Department of Child Services following her 2022 conviction for child neglect.

I-Team 8 called the Morgan County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday to find out why his office gave McClure a plea deal for the case of child neglect in 2018, but no one returned the call.

Live eclipse traffic: Heavy traffic building in central Ohio as travelers return south

Traffic along north and west Columbus remains heavy at 6 p.m. Monday as motorists make their way home from viewing the solar eclipse.

The heaviest traffic is U.S. 33 eastbound between Dublin and Marysville, and there are backups along southbound Interstate 71 north of Columbus and on I-70 west of the city, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Solar Eclipse 2024 live updates: Ohio traffic begins to slow; several state parks already at capacity

Here's what to know as travelers return following the eclipse:

Live traffic updates: traffic building, crash on U.S. 33 as travelers return south

The slowest travel at 6 p.m. is U.S. 33 between Marysville and Dublin as travelers make their way back to Columbus following the eclipse, according to ODOT.

A crash that blocked an eastbound lane of U.S. 33 in Marysville also was slowing traffic.

Travelers can expect up to a 30-minute delay between Marysville and Dublin along 33, according to ODOT.

Traffic is heavy elsewhere in the region, including the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 west of Columbus and the southbound lanes of I-71 north of I-270. Both areas reported 10-minute delays.

Separately, a disabled vehicle caused backups in the eastbound lanes of I-270 on the South Side, causing delays of about 15 minutes.

There was also a crash that closed the shoulders on I-270 south of Roberts Road that slowed traffic.

ODOT to eclipse travelers: Brace for slow return home

While the pace of traffic to the eclipse has been slow to build, ODOT spokesperson Matt Bruning urged people to prepare for a long return time as everyone who headed to the path of totality tries to get home.

“Patience will be key for sure, if you can stay put the longer you can after the event the easier it will be,” Bruning said. “History is a teacher, and it teaches that is not what happens, everyone leaves and wants to get home at the same time.”

North central Ohio saw slowdowns on routes to eclipse

In addition to heavy traffic on U.S. 33, ODOT's traffic cameras also showed heavy traffic on Ohio 315 near the Franklin-Delaware County line and the Ohio 315 and U.S. 23 interchange. The two left lanes of I-270 west were also closed at State Route 315 south due to a crash.

Traffic along Interstate 71 in Delaware County was also heavy near Alum Creek State Park.

Roadways in Powell near the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium were also seeing increased traffic and slowdowns.

On the East Side of Columbus, a ramp from Interstate 670 to U.S. 62 was closed in both directions due to a crash, but is now reopened.

How to check live traffic, see road cameras in Ohio

The ODOT OHGO website has live traffic updates, as well as access to dozens of traffic cameras throughout the state to make informed traveling decisions before heading out.

ODOT: Do not watch eclipse from side of highway

Bruning also said to be mindful of ODOT and state law enforcement workers, and said it was not legal for drivers to stop on the highway to watch the eclipse.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

  • Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
  • Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City
  • North Country: NCPR has the latest from across the region, as well as information on local viewing events to check out

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.
