Morocco-Born Producer, Ahmed Spins' On His Journey Through Dance Music

Born and raised in Casablanca, Ahmed Spins is an electronic music DJ and producer who is quickly making a name for himself in the industry. His draw to music started at a young age when he learned to play the piano, guitar, and drums and later. But it wasn’t until he was studying in Boston, that he started experimenting with music production software more seriously, and found his passion for creating his own unique blend of Afro-House and Deep House music.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Flume and Laolu, Ahmed spent years perfecting his sound, which eventually caught the attention of other DJs, producers and labels in the scene. In 2022, he signed his first major EP with Moblack Records, which propelled him to new heights in the industry.

Despite his rapid rise to fame, Ahmed remains humble and focused on his music. He is always looking for ways to improve as a producer and performer and has big plans for the future. With his talent and dedication, it's clear that Ahmed Spins is a rising star in the world of electronic music.

Ahmed Spins: I was born in Casablanca, Morocco. I was always very curious on how music was made. I used to play in a band in high school with one of my closest friends and crazy DJ/Producer Mehdi. I played the guitar and he played the piano. Playing one instrument didn’t satisfy my curiosity so I started looking into producing.

SN: What was the first electronic music that pulled you in?

AS: I was a big Flume fan back in the day. He’s a very experimental artist. He perfected his art without trying to copy a certain style and I really admired that. Fast forward a couple years and all of pop music is based on Flume's style. I then started getting a bit more into the Boiler Room scene and listened to different styles of music. I eventually made my way into the techno scene which I really enjoy.

AS: The first track I made was ‘Sawa with Idd Aziz’. It was an Afro-House track with a cool piano lick. Really enjoyed working on that one. I try to experiment with different styles of music. I produce anything from an Afro-House track to a gospel house banger. My older sister had a really cool music palette and has shaped much of the music I'm into. She got me into disco, gospel, and loads of other fun stuff. Mehdi got me into techno.

SN: Tell us a bit about the making of your first EP released on Moblack Records?

AS: The ‘Anchor Point’ EP started during Covid. I was on a surf trip with one of my best friends and I started making a track to give us the morning motivational boost before getting in the water. I later asked Stevo to drop vocals on it. I was also making waves & waves in parallel and got Lizwi to drop some insane vocals as well. I was never going to release both tracks because releasing makes me super anxious. I played ‘Anchor Point’ once in a boat party and the place went nuts. That being said, I still didn’t want to release the track. My best friend Guillaume said there was no way it was going to sit and rot in the shelves. Without Gui and Lucas there would have never been an ‘Anchor Point’.

SN: What is your theory on bass? What kind of  basslines do you look for?

AS: It really depends on the track. If I want to make a sunset song I’ll usually have something smooth with a low cut off. If I’m making something more energetic I’ll play with the cutoff, distortion, or some saturation. Not too much though haha might make the mix too muddy.

AS: I just played at Kunye in South Africa recently. Man, that was crazy! The crowd was so open minded and ready to rage. Full commitment. Loved every bit.

SN: What artists do you draw inspiration from? Be it electronic music or other genres?

AS: An artist that inspires me a lot is Laolu. He is very well rounded and there is a lot to learn from him. His producing is crazy good. He’s also a very humble and great guy which is equally as cool.

IPL playoffs: How can RCB make it to the top four? What about CSK?

He did an MBA in marketing, and then worked for a year in advertising, before deciding to chuck it in favour of a job which would combine the pleasures of watching cricket and writing about it. The intense office cricket matches were an added bonus.

With only 11 matches to go in the league stage of IPL 2024, no team is yet assured of qualification (though a couple of them are very close), while two teams - Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings - have been eliminated. Here is a look at the playoffs chances of the remaining eight sides.

Chennai Super Kings

Played: 12, points: 12, NRR: 0.491 Remaining matches: RR (h), RCB (a) Four losses in their last six games have left CSK with plenty to do to ensure a place in the top four. However, wins in their two remaining games will almost certainly ensure qualification, since their net run rate is still a healthy 0.491 despite their 35-run loss to Gujarat Titans. That's a substantial cushion over Delhi Capitals' -0.316, who could also reach 16 if they win their last two.

Super Kings will have to contend with a quick turnaround though, as they face Rajasthan Royals next in a day game on Sunday at home. If they lose that, they could be knocked out as RR, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and one of Delhi Capitals or Lucknow Super Giants can all finish on 16 or more points.

If they do finish on 14, their best bet will be SRH and DC losing their remaining games and LSG losing to Mumbai Indians to stay on 14. Then, their superior net run rate will ensure CSK finish third, ahead of the two other teams on 14.

Gujarat Titans

Played: 12, points: 10, NRR: -1.063 Remaining matches: KKR (h), SRH (a) Even with these two points against CSK, qualification is extremely tough for GT, because of their terrible net run rate of -1.063. Their best case will be a 14-point finish and a jostle for the last two spots with three other teams. On the current net run rate, GT's best chance will be if those three teams are SRH (who are already on 14), DC and LSG. GT will still need huge wins to finish above at least two of those teams.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Played: 11, points: 16, NRR: 1.453 Remaining matches: MI (h), GT (a), RR (a) With 16 points already in the bag and an excellent net run rate of 1.453, KKR are almost through to the playoffs. Even if they lose all three remaining matches, 16 should still be enough as only two other teams can get to 18 or more - RR and SRH - and two more, CSK and one of LSG or DC, can finish on 16. On the other hand, one more win will almost certainly assure them of a top-two finish.

Rajasthan Royals

Played: 11, points: 16, NRR: 0.476 Remaining matches: CSK (a), PBKS (h), KKR (h) RR need one win to be sure of qualification. Even if they lose all three, they will be knocked out only if their net run rate falls below that of the winner of the DC-LSG clash, assuming the winner finishes on 16. Like KKR, RR will instead be eyeing a top-two finish after having dominated the points table for most of the season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Played: 12, points: 14, NRR: 0.406 Remaining matches: GT (h), PBKS (h) Their stunning win over LSG has lifted SRH to 14 points at a net run rate of 0.406, which not only gives them an excellent chance of qualifying but also a shot at finishing in the top two (though they'll need help from other results for that). Even one more win will put them in a favourable position to qualify for the playoffs. They also have a good schedule, playing their last two games at home against teams which are currently among the bottom three.

Lucknow Super Giants

Played: 12, points: 12, NRR: -0.769 Remaining matches: DC (a), MI (a) The drubbing against SRH has impacted LSG's net run rate quite adversely, and that could see them missing out on a top-four finish. Even with 16 points, they could be knocked out by RR, KKR, SRH and CSK finishing above them. Even if they beat DC but lose to Mumbai, they will be hard-pressed to qualify as the other teams in contention - SRH, DC, DC and Royal Challengers Bengaluru - all have better run rates.

Delhi Capitals

Played: 12, points: 12, NRR: -0.316 Remaining matches: RCB (a), LSG (h) CSK's defeat to GT is good news for Capitals, but they could still miss out even with 16 points if CSK win their last two, and if the top three teams move beyond 16.

However, if DC beat RCB but lose to LSG, they could still finish among the top four if LSG lose to Mumbai and if none of the other teams which are currently below 14 get to that mark. Then, the fight for the fourth place could be a direct tussle between DC and LSG, with both on 14 points and the former currently having the better run rate.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Played: 12, points: 10, NRR: 0.217 Remaining matches: DC (h), CSK (h) RCB have mounted a late charge with four wins on the bounce, but even six in a row might not be enough as four teams can still finish on 16 or more points. However, given their relatively healthy net run rate, they could even finish third with the following result combination: SRH and CSK lose both their matches, and LSG win no more than one. Then RCB will have a good chance of surpassing SRH on net run rate, and they will stay ahead of DC and LSG as well.

Myrtle Beach native, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ co-host Vanna White brings excitement to golf

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — After a hefty spin, the wheel of golf has finally landed on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The city is set to host the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club this week as an Additional Event alongside the Wells Fargo Championship.

Among those playing in the 52-team pro-am on Wednesday is Vanna White, celebrated co-host of the show “Wheel of Fortune.” Born and raised in North Myrtle Beach, White is most famous for uncovering letters that could lead to make-or-break for contestants for the past 41 years — but she also possesses a lesser-known connection to golf.

“I started playing golf when I was young, and it only lasted for a couple of years – of course, other things got in the way,” she said ahead of the pro-am.

White picked the game back up back five years ago and is now quite the golf enthusiast, participating in her fair share of celebrity tournaments.

“It’s beautiful on the course, it’s nature, and you’re really competing against yourself and I just have fun when I go out there,” she said. “I don’t take it too seriously. It’s a great escape and a good way to clear your mind.”

Golf has also taught White lessons applicable to her life and career: “If I’ve learned anything over the past few years from golf, it’s been to never give up. Never give up! There’s always a better score.”

Now, White is proud to be one of the ambassadors of her hometown event. For a city lauded as the “golfing capital of the world,” the Myrtle Beach Classic has been decades in the making. The Grand Strand has played host to Senior and Ladies PGA Championships and a multitude of amateur, junior and collegiate events, but this is the first time a PGA TOUR event will be played here.

White initially didn’t want to play in the pro-am, but caved pretty quickly.

“I’m so excited, I’m a little kid in a candy store. … The course is so beautiful. … it’s breathtaking, everything about it,” she said while beaming.

She did play the Dunes Club a couple months ago – but refrained from mentioning her score (“It was hard,” she admitted.) and will be teeing it up here again alongside her brother Chip on Wednesday.

Despite her illustrious and continuing life and future in Hollywood, as White just signed on for two more years of the show along with new co-host Ryan Seacrest, she tries to visit her roots a few times a year.

"When I was born ... no one could pronounce my name correctly – Vana? Vanya? – I can come home now and people know me as Vanna,” she reflected. “I don't consider myself a celebrity even when I'm on TV, and especially when I come home. I'm still that Vanna that I grew up as, and I'll always be that same person.”

Part of White’s golf journey has been to break 100, which she accomplished in 2021. Is it time to break 90?

“I'm so close,” she admitted. “I'm shooting in the mid-90s right now – that's not bragging by any means – but it's those few putts that you miss. I'm working on it. Maybe tomorrow."

Stephanie Royer is on staff at the PGA TOUR. She played college golf and is currently pursuing an MBA. A world traveler, she hopes to always keep her country count above her age and to hit every destination in the "National Treasure" movies.

Ahmed out to repay Leics for allowing trip to Mecca

E ngland spin bowler Rehan Ahmed says he is determined to repay Leicestershire for allowing him to miss games this season to complete a religious journey to Mecca.

The 19-year-old was given two weeks off club duties to embark on Umrah, a pilgrimage to the holy city in Saudi Arabia.

Ahmed, who is the youngest male cricketer to play for England in all formats of the game, said both his club side and national team bosses supported the solo trip he made.

“Leaving Leicestershire for two weeks and coming straight back into the team is a privilege,” he told BBC Radio Leicester.

“Whenever I do play, I try give as much as I can and I respect them a lot for allowing me to go.”

Ahmed has previously spoken about how important his Muslim faith is to him and how it has kept him humble after a record-breaking rise to the international stage.

He says religion has kept him "calm in big moments" on the pitch, and that it has "only put me in a better place".

"I realised cricket is not everything," Ahmed said.

"I love it, but it's not everything, and religion is always bigger. And there are always bigger things than cricket - it's taught me to be relaxed when I play."

Ahmed said he had previously made the pilgrimage to Mecca with his brother and cousins, but his latest journey was made alone.

"I love it there, it's so peaceful - it's like my happy place," Ahmed said.

"Every time I have the opportunity, I always want to go back and I reckon that is the only place where I’d skip cricket for."

Ahmed was part of England's Test team that toured India during the British winter, and took 11 wickets in three matches before leaving because of an urgent family matter.

He has featured in three of Leicestershire's five County Championship Division Two matches so far this term, claiming four wickets and producing a knock of 85 in their draw against Northamptonshire.

Paris is going electric — for a new perspective on the city, take a low-carbon car tour

With its sights set on banning fossil fuel cars by 2030, Paris is embracing electric vehicles — and you can take one for a spin around the capital’s landmarks.

Vintage cars, with vintage engines, typically have a lot to say: they grumble around corners, groan up hills and continue to mutter to themselves even when they’ve come to a stop. But this one isn’t like the others. The white-and-blue Renault 4L, which rolled off the factory floor in 1955, should be as talkative as the rest of her kind. Yet, all I can hear as we stop at a red light between the honey-coloured apartments of the 8th arrondissement are wafts of French radio, blowing in through the sunroof on the breeze.

From the back seat, it’s hard to tell exactly where it’s coming from — beyond one of the cast iron balconies on either side, perhaps, or the next car over, where a blonde woman is cradling a miniature poodle on her lap.The light turns green, and the little Renault sparks into life. The engine sounds like a spaceship powering up— there’s an electrical whirring that grows increasingly high pitched. And then we’re away, speeding over the cobbles.   “She’s surprisingly powerful,” driver Renaud Garza calls back with a chuckle from beneath his navy chauffeur’s cap. “With the battery, I can drive at around 75mph.”

Increasingly, the streets of Paris are going electric. Like our Renault 4L, battery-powered cars have become a more popular sight over the last decade — together with a burgeoning herd of e-buses, bikes and even unicycles. It’s all part of the city’s plans to outlaw all but electric vehicles by 2030 in preparation for becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Officials have run incentives to boost the use of e-vehicles over recent years, such as the €100 (£85) per month leasing scheme that had to be phased out early due to the vigorous uptake. Infrastructure is being upgraded, too, with charging points appearing around Paris at increasingly regular intervals and a trial electrified motorway, which can charge cars as they drive, under construction nearby.

Renaud typically drives a fleet of petrol Citroën 2CVs between Paris’s blockbuster sights for his tour company 4 Roues Sous 1 Parapluie. But over the past few years, they have added an electric version alongside the Renault 4L. Both have retrofitted, specially designed batteries.

“Get ready — I’m about to drive in the most dangerous place in Paris,” Renaud calls from the front seat as we approach the Arc de Triomphe, the sound of sirens growing steadily louder as the traffic thickens. Here, 12 major roads, including the Champs-Élysées, converge into a vast, eight-lane roundabout with the alabaster arch at its heart, vehicles endlessly circling like planets around the sun.As we’re pulled into orbit, the little Renault judders across the cobblestones, rattling on a circuitous trajectory past uniformed gendarmes posing for photos and the arch’s intricate friezes. “The French invented the roundabout,” says Renaud with a proud nod. The Etoile, as this one is known, is the proud maman of them all.

We turn right down a shaded thoroughfare lined with plane trees, past cafes heaving with suited workers lunching beneath gold parasols, and bump across a bridge over the Seine to see our next stop piercing the sky. “The Eiffel Tower was built as the centrepiece for the 1889 World’s Fair,” Renaud explains as we draw closer to one of its broad, latticed feet. “Parisians didn’t like it at the time — they’d just finished their city with all of this nice stone and then this popped up. It was ugly, too industrial. But it was useful as a radio tower, so they kept it.” Soon, we’re close enough to see its ornate ironwork and the mechanics of the lift, the cogs slowly rotating. The garden around it is closed, in the process of being preened in preparation for its starring role in the Olympics’ opening ceremony — athletes will travel on boats for six miles down the Seine before coming to a stop here. It’s been 100 years since Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924, and the tower is being repainted gold — closer to the colour Gustave Eiffel originally chose — to mark the occasion.

“The French are quite proud, it’s true,” Renaud says as we do another lap. “We want to impress the world.”
