Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 Interview: Kevin Costner On 35-Plus-Year Journey To Get Made

Interview with the vampire season 2, episode 8: assad zaman & eric bogosian answer lingering devil's minion questions, star trek: prodigy creators kevin & dan hageman spill season 2's biggest secrets.

In the movie A Dog’s Journey , we meet CJ and Trent. Childhood friends who reconnect as adults, the film experiences their lives as 11 years to adulthood through the eyes of the dog Bailey. Bailey is a special dog as he gets to live the lives of multiple dogs..and through each life, he finds a way to reconnect with CJ.

Playing the teenage versions and the adult versions of CJ and Trent are actors Kathryn Prescott and Henry Lau. We got the chance to talk to them about the making of the film, learning to sing and play for the movie and more.

Screen Rant: Also no dogs in this interview. I’ve seen dogs in all the other interviews  and I’m not meeting one yet.

Henry Lau: Well actually….(pretends there's a dog behind the chair.) Kathryn Prescott: There are puppies within the vicinity though.

Screen Rant: I saw them.

Kathryn Prescott: You might see one. Henry Lau: Dogs everywhere.

Screen Rant: Yeah, kind of hard not to catch them in this press junket. First I wanna point out that was the goal to have more people crying in the audience for this film than in Endgame because I feel like that’s the edge this film is gonna have.

Kathryn Prescott: Is Endgame sad?

Screen Rant: It gets pretty sad.

Henry Lau: Have you watched it yet? Kathryn Prescott: No I haven’t seen it...

Screen Rant: It gets pretty emotional, so I think you guys are gonna beat them in the crying per capita.

Kathryn Prescott: Oh WOW, that’s something.

Screen Rant: We go through quite a bit of your characters lives in this film, how did you find the way to track the performances when you were playing the performances as teenagers till when they were living in New York?

Henry Lau: Actually that was one of the challenges of this role because we played the characters when they were young in high school and then they get reunited years later when they're much older. So what I actually did was met with Ian Chen (who plays Trent age 11), I gotta see how he acts. He’s adorable so I constantly try to talk to him to see how he acted, I tried to mimic that in the scenes when they were together in high school.

Screen Rant: I definitely saw that. Ian to your teenage character, I saw the connection very quickly. “Oh yeah, there’s a little bit of similarities.” Did you (to Kathryn) do something very similar to Abby (Abby Ryder Fortson who plays CJ age 11) did you get to talk to her beforehand?

Kathryn Prescott: I met her beforehand. Yeah and was keeping in mind..as soon as we met I felt we actually had a lot in common in terms of who we were. That was lucky.

Screen Rant: So you took two months of what, guitar training and vocal training…

Kathryn Prescott: I think it was two months, yeah…

Screen Rant: ...did you actually have any music experience before…?

Kathryn Prescott: No.

Screen Rant: Zero?!

Screen Rant: So you went from zero to like…

Henry Lau: Hard to believe, she was amazing.

Screen Rant: No, you were great! Especially when we did hear you sing.

Kathryn Prescott: Thank you.

Screen Rant: Did you give points (to Henry) I know you have some backstory…

Kathryn Prescott: Some. Some.

Screen Rant: A little bit of history.

Henry Lau: So I’m a musician, but it’s funny on this set SHE was the musician, but our trailers were right next to each other. And all I would hear is just guitar playing. I didn’t let her know but I could hear everything. But yeah, she just kept working on it and then one day I was like, I gotta go in there. Not that she was bad or anything! I thought she was amazing it’s just that one chord that she couldn’t get… Kathryn Prescott: Messing up on the same chord. Henry Lau: The same chord so I was...hmmm...give her some pointers. But she was amazing.

Screen Rant: So I have one more thing...I’m gonna pitch you guys an idea. I talked about this to Gail and she seems into this…

Kathryn Prescott: Ok. Henry Lau: What’s the idea?

Screen Rant: Third film. A Dog’s Purpose . A Dog’s Journey . A Dog’s Vengeance . (Shows picture of fake poster)

Henry Lau: A Dog’s Vengeance?! Kathryn Prescott: (Laughs)

Screen Rant: Bailey comes back as a cop dog.

Henry Lau: As a cop dog. Kathryn Prescott: I think you got a real…idea going here. Henry Lau: What she call it, Mission CJ.

Screen Rant: Yep.

Kathryn Prescott: I think what’s his name will be number one on that list. What’s the...ugh...the boyfriend...

Screen Rant: Oh yeah definitely.

Kathryn Prescott: Oh god I’m blanking out on his name, that’s really bad. Henry Lau: Jake! Kathryn Prescott: Jake’s character.

Screen Rant: Oh he’s definitely on top of that list. Thank you so much.

Kathryn Prescott: Thank you so much!

This Hypnotic, Apocalyptic Sci-Fi With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes Stuns Despite No Actors

The 10 darkest endings in westerns, ranked, the 10 best british film noirs, ranked.

What is our purpose? Why are we even here? What happens when we die? These are the universal questions that have plagued philosophers (Plato, Kant, Nietzsche…)  through the centuries. Who could have guessed all the answers lied in a reincarnating animal? Through the blissfully-simple vantage of a dog (voiced by Josh Gad ), A Dog’s Purpose and now its sequel A Dog’s Journey tackle such meaty existential questions without ever getting bogged down in the dread that often inevitably comes with the asking.

In the sequel, Bailey (the aforementioned reincarnating dog) is tasked to protect Ethan’s granddaughter CJ. This simple mission spans decades as Baily spends multiple lives searching for the girl, inevitably finding her as a struggling young-adult ( Kathryn Prescott ). Bailey then must guide CJ to find her own confidence both professionally & personally.

In the following interview with Kathryn Prescott & co-star Henry Lau (as her best friend Trent), they reveal their first childhood pets, bonding on set with the dogs, and the tips to playing a guitar. For the full interview, watch above.

Kathryn Prescott & Henry Lau:

  • What was the first pet Kathryn Prescott & Henry Lau ever had?
  • What tricks did they teach their pets?
  • Did they bond with the dogs before shooting the film?
  • What are the tips to playing a guitar? (CJ is a struggling musician in the film, and Henry Lau is a K-Pop star)

Review: A Dog’s Journey

a dog's journey kathryn prescott

Like opening up a Hallmark card and getting sprayed in the eyes with napalm, the shameless and shameful sequel A Dog’s Journey will appeal only to those who like tears jerked from their face with maximum force and by any means necessary. It’s an inherently deplorable film disguised as a family friendly romp about the love shared between a dog and their human owner. There’s almost nothing to feel good about in this film, which uses repeated, ceaseless deaths and tragedies as a cover for lame jokes, hackneyed plot contrivances, and hollow emotional platitudes about how the things that don’t kill us make us stronger. It’s misery porn disguised as feel good entertainment for all ages, and it’s positively sickening.

First, a bit of clarification: A Dog’s Journey is the direct sequel to Lasse Hallström’s 2017 film A Dog’s Purpose , which was also unfathomably terrible, but somehow inexplicably still better than this. A Dog’s Journey is not a sequel to A Dog’s Way Home , which was released earlier this year by a different studio, despite both films being adapted from bestselling books by W. Bruce Cameron and sharing two screenwriters (Cameron and Cathryn Michon). A Dog’s Journey finds the entire, unnecessarily large four person screenwriting team (Cameron, Michon, Maya Forbes, and Wallace Wolodarsky) returning from the original effort. It continues the ongoing story of the wandering spirit of Bailey (voiced again by Josh Gad), a dog who died but keeps coming back to life in the form of other various puppers on a mission to get back to his/her master. Hallström isn’t back this time, replaced by Gail Mancuso, a television sitcom veteran making her style and substance free feature directorial debut by doing the bare minimum. (In fairness, A Dog’s Journey doesn’t even deserve the bare minimum, so Mancuso’s efforts are somewhat commendable.)

A Dog’s Journey opens with Bailey living a happy life on the farm with his aged owner, Ethan (Dennis Quaid), his wife (Marg Helgenberger), their daughter-in-law Gloria (Betty Gilpin, in a role so hysterically reprehensible it makes her character on GLOW seem like a candidate for sainthood), and their granddaughter CJ (Emma Volk). Ethan’s son (who I barely remember being mentioned in the previous film) died in a car accident, and has left the fame and fortune seeking Gloria distraught, alcoholic, and aloof. Paranoid that Ethan and his wife are going to try to take CJ and her dead husband’s inheritance from her, Gloria takes the child away from her grandparents and heads back to Chicago. Bailey dies yet again, and while he’s passing away, Ethan begs his beloved hound to track down CJ in his next life and watch over her.

The first act of A Dog’s Journey tricked me into thinking it was just going to be a duller, but not necessarily more offensive version of its predecessor, a film that repeatedly had to kill its cuddly main character to keep the story going like a sick riff on Quantum Leap or Edge of Tomorrow . (Note: Yes, I know that I have given good reviews to the John Wick films, the latest of which is out this week, and which has the death of a puppy as the inciting incident for its hero’s blood soaked revenge. But in those movies, the death has meaning and it only happened once. In A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey , it happens repeatedly because no one gives a shit and our loved ones just come back to us anyway, apparently, so death means absolutely nothing in the DCU. That stands for Dog Cinematic Universe. If you call the DC Comics Universe the DCU, you’re forgetting that DC stands for Detective Comics, so it really should be DCCU, not DCU. And can you tell how little I really want to get back around to talking about A Dog’s Journey ?)

a dog's journey kathryn prescott

Anyway, the time spent with Quaid’s family and the dog’s first reincarnation alongside a pre-teen CJ (played by Abby Ryder Fortson) lasts for such a long time that I thought A Dog’s Journey would stick to a single storyline and just bore me rather than making me physically uncomfortable being in the theatre. Oh, how wrong I was. In its predecessor, it took a long time for Bailey’s soul to come back to his boy, offering a bunch of different scenarios where the dog was in the care of other owners and served different purposes, which was still gross to think about (and the subject of a considerable amount of controversy when footage of an animal being allegedly abused on set started making headlines), but at least it gave a reason as to why the story dragged along as much as it did. In A Dog’s Journey , only once is Bailey’s spirit ever far away from CJ, and that moment isn’t dwelled upon for more than a couple of minutes. A Dog’s Journey is so maddeningly and ludicrously convenient that it makes the first film seem like a grim and sobering slice of life story in comparison.

Come to think of it, grim and sobering are perfect words to describe the moral bankruptcy of A Dog’s Journey , a film that subscribes to the rule of threes in the strictest sense when it comes to spacing out its tragedies. These moments start off in the first act when Bailey is diagnosed with cancer, Gloria leaves, and the dog dies. (Spoiler: animals die in this movie. A lot.) It’s repeated again at the end of the second act when a now young adult CJ (Kathryn Prescott, giving the film’s only praiseworthy performance) has a falling out with her now comedically alcoholic mother, then is stalked by her abusive, drug dealing, douchebag ex-boyfriend (Jake Manley), and in the process of all this, the dog dies again. This same scenario plays out several times throughout A Dog’s Journey , a film that believes that the best time to hit viewers with the worst news possible is after they’ve already been crushingly broken down by life. I’m not saying that life is easy or that hard times are avoidable. This movie suggests that life is nothing but tragedy and we’re all going to die horribly and suffer up to that moment of sweet release from this mortal coil. At one point, Bailey muses that a person can’t be truly happy without a dog. A Dog’s Journey also suggests that life can be just as meaningless and awful if you do own one.

How does anyone find something like A Dog’s Journey – a true candy coated descent into the worst of humanity – at all inspirational or uplifting? How can one justify the entertainment value of a film that has to repeatedly tease a dog or a human getting beaten, hung by a leash, or nearly hit by cars just to goose the audience? How does one find strength by sneering at one-note, cartoonish villains who only exist to bring misery on underdeveloped, but generally good people? How is A Dog’s Journey not seen as a horror film? These questions are rhetorical, of course. Some people genuinely adore being manipulated to such soul crushing and empty extremes, and no one wants to see harm come to dogs, so on some level I get the appeal. There’s just no logical way to explain a movie like A Dog’s Journey to me.

But I also can’t stop thinking about the woman who sat behind me at the screening of A Dog’s Journey that I attended when I ask these questions. She was sobbing uncontrollably and audibly through the entire film, but even though she seemed to be “enjoying” what she was watching, by the fourth or fifth string of piled up tragedies, she seems to have enough. Through the tears, she audibly said to her companions “I can’t fucking take this shit anymore.” She didn’t leave or anything, but she was clearly being put through some sort of major emotional trauma. I guess the biggest question I’m left with when it comes to A Dog’s Journey – other than just what kind of hokey, poorly defined pseudo-spirituality the film is subscribing to – is just who would want to watch a movie that would make them feel like that? If you can say that you’re into hysterical sobbing with no cathartic or long term benefits from such a response whatsoever, maybe you’re the audience for A Dog’s Journey . It certainly isn’t for pet lovers or families. It’s for people who like to cry for the sake of crying.

A Dog’s Journey opens in theatres everywhere on Friday, May 17, 2019.

Kathryn Prescott

English actress Kathryn Prescott, known for her roles in A Dog’s Journey and Finding Carter , has been hospitalized, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The 30-year-old actress was hit by a concrete mixer truck during the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 7 at the intersection of Bergen Ave. and Vanderbilt Ave. in Brooklyn. She was struck as the truck was attempting to make a right turn onto Vanderbilt Ave. and suffered injuries to both legs, both arms and a potential head injury. EMS transported the actress, who was conscious and alert at the time, to Methodist Hospital.

News that the former Skins star had been in an accident was first shared by her twin sister, Megan Prescott, in an Instagram post and story on Thursday. “I received the most terrifying phone call I’ve ever received in my life on Tuesday evening,” she wrote. “My twin sister Kathryn was hit by a cement truck while crossing a road in New York on the 7th September.”

“She is alone in New York with no family members. I need help getting to New York to support her recovery,” Megan Prescott said. “I will have to help her until she can start to walk again. I need to be there to help her with literally everything as she will be able to do incredibly little by herself. She will be in rehab for a very long time and will need 24/hr care even after she leaves the hospital.”

'A Dog's Journey' 's Kathryn Prescott in ICU with Multiple Injuries After Being Hit by Cement Truck

"She is incredibly lucky to be alive," Kathryn Prescott's twin sister, Megan Prescott, shared on Instagram

English actress Kathryn Prescott has been hospitalized with multiple injuries after being hit by a cement truck, according to her twin sister Megan Prescott.

The incident happened on Tuesday while the 30-year-old Finding Carter actress was crossing the street in New York, Megan, also 30, shared in an Instagram post on Thursday.

"I received the most terrifying phone call I've ever received in my life on Tuesday evening. My twin sister Kathryn was hit by a cement truck while crossing a road in New York on the 7th September," she wrote.

"After fighting through complex surgery some of Kathryn's injuries include: broken pelvis in two places, both of her legs, her foot and her left hand," Megan continued. "She is incredibly lucky to be alive. She narrowly avoided paralysis. The doctors are hopeful that she will make a full recovery but this will only be possible with the correct care right now."

Kathryn — who starred in the 2019 film A Dog's Journey and appeared alongside her twin in the British television series Skins — is currently "alone in New York with no family members," according to Megan, who is based in the United Kingdom.

"I need to be there to help her with literally everything as she will be able to do incredibly little by herself. She will be in rehab for a very long time and will need 24/hr care even after she leaves the hospital," she wrote of her sister.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, Megan said that she has been unable to fly to the United States to be with Kathryn.

"I applied to the US Embassy for exemption from the current restrictions banning any non-US citizens into the US and was denied earlier today and I am devastated," she explained. "I am double vaccinated, I had a PCR test yesterday and can fly at the drop of a hat. I have documents from the hospital confirming the extent of Kathryn's injuries and am willing to do anything to get to her as soon as humanly possible."

Megan added that she was sharing her story to see if there's a way to "appeal the US Embassy's decision to reject my application for exemption from the travel ban."

Currently, only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents can travel from the United Kingdom to the United States, according to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in the United Kingdom website . However, some exemption from the restrictions include travel for spouses and certain family members of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, as well as foreign diplomats carrying specific visas.

While Megan understands it's possible that she can enter the United States through another country not affected by the restrictions, she said on her Instagram Stories that she's "not interested in spending two weeks in another country to see my sister."

"She is in f------ ICU," Megan added. "I need to go NOW."

In an Instagram post, the A Dog’s Journey actress, who was hit on Sept. 7 in Brooklyn and admitted to the ICU after sustaining injuries to her legs, arms, head and more, praised “all of my amazing nurses, doctors, physical/occupational therapists and surgeons at NYP and Mount Sinai.”

In her lengthy post, she also took a moment to recognize her family, friends, hospital roommate and her sister, Megan Prescott , who first shared the news of her accident and the complex surgery that followed in her own Instagram post. At the time, Megan wrote that Kathryn “narrowly avoided paralysis,” before sharing that doctors were “hopeful” the Finding Carter actress would make a full recovery.

“Thank you to my sister for moving heaven and earth to get to me during a global pandemic and travel ban,” the Skins star wrote in the caption of the social media post. “Thank you to all of my friends for being there, without hesitation, and for sending your mums, friends and sisters when you couldn’t. Thank you to my hospital roommate for being who you are and for making me laugh, even when there wasn’t much to laugh about. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and helped in every and any way they could. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

In her first public statement since the accident, Kathryn also shared a story of a woman who was there at the time she was being transported to the hospital by emergency responders. The actress said that the woman provided her with a rock that become a metaphorical source of support.

“An anonymous woman, whose face I never saw, put this rock into my hand as I was being lifted onto a stretcher,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post, which features an image of the rock. “She whispered into my ear that it was for good luck. When I finally got to the operating room and was being prepped for my first surgery, one of the assistants asked me what was in my fist. I realized I had been holding onto it since then without realizing.”

She added, “Thank you to that woman.”

Back in September, Megan Prescott revealed that her reason for going public about what happened to Kathryn was, in part, to get help with traveling to the U.S., an effort complicated at the time but COVID-19 travel restrictions.

According to the British actress' twin sister, Megan Prescott, the accident happened on Tuesday in New York.

In a post written Thursday on Instagram , Megan explained how Kathryn, 30, was crossing a street when the truck hit her. The star's injuries include a broken pelvis, legs, foot, and left hand.

"I applied to the US Embassy for exemption from the current restrictions banning any non-US citizens into the US and was denied earlier today and I am devastated," Megan explained. "I am double vaccinated, I had a PCR test yesterday and can fly at the drop of a hat. I have documents from the hospital confirming the extent of Kathryn's injuries and am willing to do anything to get to her as soon as humanly possible."

She would need to spend two weeks in quarantine in a different country than the U.K. and then fly into the U.S.

Megan detailed how her sister will be in rehab and physical therapy for a long time while recovering from her extensive injuries.
