The opening act wasn't the greatest.... Kira Isabella was fantastic! Sounded amazing her stage presence made it even better. I really disliked the security at Dallas night club for allowing these 2 girls to bag into people and smack them and push. They were wayyyy to drunk to be able to stay!

Kira Isabella poised to build off of her past success with the release of “Soon”

For someone who landed her first record deal at just 16, Kira Isabella has not let her foot off the gas at all. Ten years later she reflects on the single and album "Love Me Like That" that broke her into the industry and onto country’s big stage. The opening act on tours with Carrie Underwood and Terri Clark throughout 2013, helped crown her as the 2013 CCMA Female Artist of the Year.

Almost 7 years later I caught up with Kira just after the 2019 OCM Awards to discuss where she’s at now and what the near future holds.

Ottawa Life Magazine: Hi Kira! Welcome back to Ottawa, how were the OCM Awards for you?

Kira Isabella:  It was amazing, always wonderful coming home. We played two fantastic shows, one being at the awards itself. Getting to play with the caliber of artists that were a part of that evening is always humbling, and obviously a thrill.

You also finished up a great tour with Aaron Pritchett recently? How was that?

Yes I did! I’ve been playing the same circuit for 10 years now and it just keeps getting better and better. We did 35 shows in 40 days and it was an absolute blast, he’s such a great entertainer!

Wow! 35 in 40 days? That’s amazing, it’s every artists dream to play shows like that on the big stage. You mentioned that you’ll be hitting the festival circuit as well soon.  Does that mean there is a new single on the horizon?

Yes! At this point the single is called “Soon” and I can’t wait! I’d always identified as more of a vocalist, but since the collaborating on my first album, I’ve fallen in love with writing. I had the amazing privilege to write with some fantastic writers and producers for the new record that I’ve looked up to. Getting to write songs with them has been surreal. I’ll be spending July in Nashville finishing up the new album, then rehearsals will start for the new show, and finally we hit the road!

There has been a lot of talk in the industry lately in regards to the inequality of men vs women and how the industry caters heavily to the male side. There are some heavy hitting women from the industry taking a stand like Reba McEntire for instance. Any thoughts on that?

Well, I Iook up to all those women, especially Reba, and the women in country have been through so much. I would be lying if said I don’t feel the way as most probably do. I still think it’s a great time for country, but I am happy that it is being acknowledged. Listen to girl power on air, Country 101.1 in Ottawa, Amanda Kingsland has amazing thoughts on this subject and I appreciate all she is doing on the subject.

To me this dynamic, well spoken country artist continues to have a bright future in country music and she stands out as a strong female, one that can emerge successful in a pool of bros. Looking forward to her new single!

About Kira Isabella

Kira Isabella Wilkie is a Canadian country singer, songwriter, and guitarist who performs her lively country-pop as simply Kira Isabella. The Ottawa, Ontario native began studying voice at age seven, and was inspired to pursue the country genre after hearing compatriot Shania Twain's 2002 album Up! A few years later, at age 14, she won the Rising Star award at the Canadian Country Music Awards, which brought her to the attention of industry professionals, eventually leading to a record deal with Sony Music Canada in 2009. In 2011, her first single, "Love Me Like That," cracked the Canadian Hot 100. Her debut album of the same name was issued a year later and featured the follow-up singles "A Little More Work" and "Songs About You," which also charted. Meanwhile, the singer appeared as the opening act on tours with Carrie Underwood and Terri Clark, and in late 2013 signed with the U.S. label HitShop Records. Kira Isabella's sophomore album, Caffeine & Big Dreams, arrived in 2014 and went on to receive a Juno nomination for 2015 Country Album of the Year. What are you up to at the moment?

Personally and musically speaking, what was the pandemic like for you, when was the last time you were in ottawa what was memorable about it, how would you describe your relationship with social media nowadays, what is your summer wardrobe staple.

What’s your dream collaboration at the moment?

You have fond memories of performing at the ottawa ex as a kid. can you tell me more about that experience, you’ve played bluesfest twice now. what was that like for you is there anyone performing this year that you’d like to see, how does your new direction tie into 2019’s ep “sides”, are there any new projects or events you’d like to share.

A prolific singer and songwriter, KIRA ISABELLA has spent literally half her life performing her brand of up-tempo country music across Canada; an impressive feat at just 20 years old. With a fervent passion for belting out any song, she has been unstoppable since her first recital at the age of seven. Her charming stage presence, bubbly personality and natural talents led her to win nearly every competition within driving distance from her hometown.

Kira’s first single “Love Me Like That” was a runaway hit crossing over into the Canadian Hot 100 Chart while earning a Canadian Radio Music Award in the Country Category at Canadian Music Week (2012). The track “A Little More Work” quickly climbed up the charts with its catchy melody and infectious hooks becoming another hit for the young artist. Her debut album “Love Me Like That” was released to critical acclaim.

Some songs grab you right away, while others sink in over time and won’t let you go. AUTUMN HILL’s music does both. On their debut album, “Favourite Mistake”, Tareya Green and Mike Robins tell compelling stories of loss and love from two distinct perspectives. In Addition to the title track the intimate “Battle Scars,” shows off their voices’ uncanny blend, and others, like the guitar-driven “Fire” sparkle with spirited energy. The singles “Anything at All” and “Can’t Keep Waiting” have found favour on country and pop radio alike. Tareya and Mike took very different roads towards an unexpected common goal. Mike grew up listening to his father’s classic-rock collection and decided he wanted to be Jimi Hendrix. Sides: Kira Isabella is Finding Her Voice

When you think of Canadian country music’s next generation of top talent, Kira Isabella is firmly established among that group. She has won two CCMA Awards (including Female Artist of the Year in 2013), landed three Top 10 singles on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, and has had eight consecutive Top 20 radio singles – all by the age of 25.

Having released two new EP’s entitled Side A and Side B in late 2018 and early 2019 respectively, Kira Isabella is really finding her voice.

“One of the cool things I’ve been hearing from the people closest to me is that they feel that I’m really starting to find my voice,” says Isabella.

“I’m really singing about things that are important to me and figuring out who I am as an artist. I hope that people can continue to see that.”

This is very evident in Little Girl which climbed into the Top 15 at Canadian country radio. It’s taken some time for Kira to release a new album but the wait for the new music was well worth it.

“This is the first album I’ve released in a little while. I really wanted to take the time with my producer and in the studio to find my voice again and to figure out where I wanted to go vocally and what I wanted to sing about,” says Isabella.

“I got together with some people that came up with some incredible music. I Don’t Wanna Know is the one where I started to actually feel like a writer. There’s been a lot of growth on this album I think.”

Some of those people include Maren Morris, Sam Ellis and Shy Carter who wrote Danger Danger . Up-and-coming country superstar Levi Hummon is featured on We Should Be Together .

To say it’s been a busy few months for Kira Isabella would be an understatement. She is currently wrapping up her first cross-country tour alongside Aaron Pritchett and his Out On The Town tour .

Going on tour with Aaron Pritchett would be a surreal experience for any country singer but for Kira Isabella, it has been extra special.

“I’ve loved him for so long. The fact that he’s giving me this opportunity to go literally across the entire country with him is so cool,” says Isabella.

“This is my first ever tour on a tour bus which I’m really excited about as well.”

Last September, Kira Isabella fulfilled a lifelong dream of getting to perform with Shania Twain at the CCMA Awards in Hamilton . Her young career has been chock-full of incredible moments but to her that one takes the cake.

For Kira Isabella, performing is her favourite part of being a musician and those moments are always the ones that stick the most.

“Just playing live has always been my favourite part about this. Just connecting with audiences everywhere,” says Isabella.

So what is Kira Isabella looking forward to in the next couple of years?

“I think if you look at my list of goals for the next couple of years I would love to win another CCMA. That would be really incredible. And to get to perform on the show again next year. Those are the types of things I look forward to.”

On a personal level, the Canadian country singer experienced some difficult moments, including a breakup and the loss of loved ones. And, even after three Top 10 singles and a Canadian Country Music Award, her career path was disrupted, too, by a shift in management and the end of her major-label deal. What’s more, she moved residences.

Happily, the Ottawa-born recording artist is back on track, with a new management team and a new batch of songs, recorded in Nashville, that show a fresh edge and definite maturity to her style of country music. Gone is the sweet-voiced teenager in a frilly dress; the Kira Isabella we see now — at 25 — is a powerhouse vocalist with the confident air of a pop diva.

She’s currently heading across the Prairies as a special guest of Canadian country cowboy Aaron Pritchett. Their Out On The Town excursion pulls into Ottawa on Valentine’s Day, the same day that Isabella plans to release an upbeat new song of longing entitled We Should Be Together.

It’s the third single from her forthcoming third album, Sides, which has been released in two installments: Side A came out last fall, while Side B dropped earlier this month.

Q: The pop-oriented sound of these new songs is a bit of a departure for you. Are you striving for crossover appeal?

A: Well, never say never. That would be a really cool thing, although my heart is always in country. I grew up listening to a lot of pop music, and performing a lot of pop music and loving it. I always throw back to the Shania Twain album Up!, where she had the country side and the pop side. They’re produced differently and that really resonated with me, and I think it comes out in the songs I write and the songs that I choose. There’s definitely an evolution happening in country music right now. So yeah, my producer and I wanted to kind of modernize it.

Q: Speaking of Shania, you were one of the singers who performed with her during the televised opening of the Canadian Country Music Awards. What was that like?

A: It was such an absolute honour. Shania was a big part of putting the performance together. She was at rehearsal and really took her time with us. It was so special because she’s such a big part of my story. She’s a big part of why I fell in love with country music, with her being from Timmins and me being from Ottawa. She’s an Ontario girl on a world stage. To get to do that with my friends, Madeline (Merlo) and Jess (Moskaluke) it was really special.

Q: Did anything surprise you about working with Shania?

A: Not really. She was just what I expected. So sweet. She was really kind, and really took her time. And she smelled amazing. I’ll never forget that.

Q: The first single from this album was Little Girl, which talks about refusing to be treated like a little girl. Is that something you’ve experienced?

A: It’s definitely something that has happened to me a lot in my life. It happens when you work in this industry, especially when people are a lot older than you. It’s about making you feel small.

Q: It’s your second song with a strong feminist message. The first one, Quarterback, was about date rape. Is it important to you to be a role model? 

A: When I heard this song, I knew I had to do it. It was the same feeling I had with Quarterback. It resonated with me so much, and I knew I would be able to tell the story. It’s scary to think of being a role model because I’m still growing up and learning. But I’ve been through a lot in the last few years, and I’ve realized the platform I have, and just the amount of people I’m able to reach, you have to be careful what messages you send out. I wouldn’t want to say anything that I wouldn’t want any little girl to hear. 

Q: You released the new album in two parts. Are you releasing it as a full-length CD, too?

A: I am. I think it’s so cool the way that artists are able to release music now. There isn’t a formula or rules about how you have to put things out and do things anymore. There are artists who literally write a song and post it that day, which I think is so organic and so cool. As a fan of music, I love that. As an artist, I had half the album done and since it’s been a minute since I put out a body of work, my manager and I decided to spread it out and not make people wait for it. We always planned to put it out as a whole, too.

Q: How did you divide the songs?

A: Side A is the songs that have a little more attitude, that are a little bigger. Side B has more vulnerable songs. When we release them all together, it will be Sides. Being on a record label since I was 16, I feel like the image that was put out for me, it was who I am at the time, but now I’m a little bit older, and I want to be really honest with people and share my experiences, all the sides of me.

Side A – Kira Isabella Interview and Review

Kira Isabella is a Canadian country music veteran with 10 singles that have landed in the Top 20, and a brand new EP ( Side A ) ready for her fans.

With that history of hits including, A Little More Work , Gone Enough , and Quarterback it’s hard to remember sometimes that she’s only 25 years old and still taking steps to learn who she is and what she wants to accomplish in her career.

We caught up with Kira on the phone to talk about her EP, her upcoming 2019 tour with Aaron Pritchett and David James, and more. She told us that working on this album (part 2 will come in 2019) has felt like a new chapter in her career. It’s been an opportunity to push herself vocally, to explore new ideas and subjects, and she has truly enjoyed it.

Side A features five songs, including three that country fans have already had a chance to hear, and two brand new songs for them. We asked Kira about each of the songs and for her to share some thoughts on them.

Kira told us that to her, Little Girl is an empowering and uplifting song that has no room for negativity. I told her that I loved the fact that it includes a Michelle Obama-esque, “if they go low, you go high” lyric and message, that really hammers home the message. She added that Tebey (who co-wrote the song with Sam Ellis and Elizabeth Elkins) told her that he didn’t want a single lyric included in the song that he didn’t feel he could look his young daughters in the eyes and tell them. That in itself is a powerful message that shouldn’t be missed.

Danger Danger is the second track on the EP and was written by Maren Morris, Shy Carter, and Sam Ellis. Kira said that she remembers Ellis (also her producer) playing her the demo and it taking a few seconds for her to realize that Maren Morris herself was singing the song. She said that the subject matter resonated with her, hitting on her personal and professional life. She also told us that the song was an opportunity for her to take her voice to a new place and go for it.

The third track, Handcuffs , is a fun listen, and Kira laughed when we got to it from the more serious nature of the previous two songs. She calls the song the sassiest of her career so far, and we agree. Kira says that Handcuffs is fun to sing, fun to play with, and she can already picture the music video in her head – and it’s a good time waiting to be made into a reality.

The fourth song on the tracklist, Stupid Heart, is the second new song on this EP. Kira describes it as autobiographical, painting a picture of her life in a song. She also says that it’s a song that allowed her to showcase a vocal maturity and sound that her earlier career work may not have highlighted.

I Don’t Wanna Know is the fifth and final song on the Side A EP, and Kira took a deep breath before we talked about it. Kira co-wrote the song with two super talented Canadian women, Emma Lee and Karen Kosowski in a session that she had hoped would be upbeat. But when she walked into the room that day, the weight of more emotionally heavy things she was feeling took over. And with the support and encouragement of her co-writers, Kira dove into what she was feeling. She also told us that I Don’t Wanna Know is important to her because it marked the first time in her career that she felt like a songwriter. She’s been writing for a long time, but this was a milestone moment.

This EP marks the first time since 2014’s Caffeine & Big Dreams that Kira Isabella has released a collection of songs. It’s an exciting event for a young star that already has a Female Artist of the Year award from the Canadian Country Music Association. A new chapter in a career that is already nearing a decade in length. And most importantly, it’s good.

These five songs all fit with Kira Isabella. As she told us, some of them take her to new places, some of them push her vocally, but none of them sound like they shouldn’t be hers. And if that’s the case on Side B in the new year, we’re all in for a treat.

While we were on the phone, we also talked about Aaron Pritchett’s Out On The Town tour that will take Kira from BC to PEI in January and February. When we asked about the tour, she told us that she’s excited because she loves Canada, and while she’s had the chance to play a lot of great shows across the country, she’s never done a true bus tour from one coast to the other. With 30+ shows on the tour (with the chance that more could be added), this will be her opportunity to do just that, playing her hits, fan favourites, and new music on stages from Nanaimo to Sussex and all stops in between.

Before we were done, we had to ask Kira about the 2018 CCMA Award show and her participation in the Shania Twain tribute that opened the broadcast. As a lifelong admirer of Shania, the chance to be involved with Jess Moskaluke and Madeline Merlo in the medley was a great experience for her as a fan and artist. She said that the mega-star stopped in during rehearsals to give notes and help with the planning and performance. And she noted that from now on, in all of their careers, she feels like herself, Moskaluke, and Merlo will always have the connection of that night and tribute to their hero.

Q1. If you’re on a long drive and have to choose an album to put on and play all the way through, which album do you choose?

K. Kira had three albums that came to mind: Thrice,  The Artist In The Ambulance // Ariana Grande,  Sweetener // Shania Twain,  UP!

Q2. Do you have a dream collaboration?

K. Kira had a few names come to mind including, Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Levi Hummon, and Jordan Davis.

Q3. Do you have a favourite venue from your career?

K. Calgary’s Saddledome and her hometown Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre top her list of favourites.

Q4. Do you have a dream vacation?

K. Kira told us that she’s not very good at taking vacations, but she’s totally into the idea of a working vacay in Nashville.

Q5. Is there an artist that you think people should be paying more attention to?

K. Kira mentioned emerging Canadian country star Jade Eagleson as well as Billie Eilish and Khalid.

The singer, 54, was spotted taking a few sultry selfies — including of her famous “ big booty ” — while on a luxurious boat off the coast of Italy on Thursday amid  rumors she has split from her husband, Ben Affleck .

Lopez looked ethereal while sporting a white, plunging, one-piece bathing suit that perfectly hugged her curves in photos obtained by Page Six.

She accessorized the fresh look with round sunglasses, gold hoops, a necklace and matching gold bracelets. She also donned white sandals and styled her hair in a high ponytail.

At one point, she carried a straw bag and her brown two-piece cover-up, which she had slipped off as soon as she got on the boat.

Most notably, Lopez rocked her engagement and wedding rings from Affleck, 51, despite going on the Italian getaway solo .

In the pics, the mom of two could be seen first getting on the boat with her friends before they had an impromptu dance party.

She later stripped down to her bathing suit before posing for a few photos and selfies. She also turned the camera on her friends as they danced and stuck out their tongues.

The “Jenny from the Block” singer could also be seen adjusting her bathing suit while chatting with friends before sitting back with a glass of bubbly in one hand and her phone in the other.

In between all the fun, Lopez was photographed sitting in a corner of the boat, looking into the distance and biting her thumb.

Her Italian getaway comes after Affleck spent Father’s Day with his ex-wife , Jennifer Garner, and their three children : Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.

The “13 Going on 30” actress, 52, was seen walking into her ex-husband’s house Sunday before he drove her back home a few hours later.

Despite not sharing any children together and being absent from the low-key visit, Lopez did pay tribute to Affleck on Father’s Day with an Instagram post.

She shares twins Max and Emme, 16, with ex-husband Marc Anthony.

For the past two months, Affleck and Lopez have been plagued with split rumors since the singer attended the Met Gala on her own .

A few days after the May 6 event, it was revealed that the couple — who tied the knot in July 2022 — had been staying in separate homes , further fueling rumors that there was trouble in paradise.

Since then, the couple has only been seen together a handful of times , and during Samuel’s graduation party, they maintained their distance .

Although the two have tried to keep the rumors at bay, a music industry insider told the Daily Mail that Lopez feels she has done all she can to save their troubled marriage.

“Jenny has had enough, and she really tried, but she can do no more. It’s not getting any better; it’s worse,” they said.

Another insider claimed J.Lo is tired of taking the blame for the impending demise of their relationship, saying, “Ben is a great guy, but he can be grumpy and a downer. I think the world saw that in photos like when they were at the Grammys last year; he wouldn’t smile . If they saw how it really was, they would not attack her.

“He chain-smokes and cusses and seems irritated a lot of the time. Great director and actor, but not a lot of laughs with him, you know?” the source continued, adding that the “Gone Girl” star “is a wonderful father, though.”

In an interview that aired Thursday, Affleck touched on his marriage to Lopez, calling her level of fame “f–king bananas.”

“We went somewhere with [Jennifer]—I can’t remember because she’s so famous, and she creates this—people love her, and she really represents something important to people,” he told Kevin Hart, who hosts the  “Hart to Heart” talk show .

“[To me,] people are like, ‘Hey, I like your movie,’ and then they’re like ‘AAAHHHH! J-LO!’” he yelled. “It’s amazing, you know what I mean?”

Affleck also talked about his infamous facial expressions, explaining that he comes across as frustrated in photos because he’s “a little bit shy.”

“I don’t like a lot of attention. This is why people see me and they’re like, ‘Why is this dude always mad?’ Because someone had their camera sticking in my face, and I’m like, ‘OK, here we go.’”

Sabrina Carpenter shoots music video on South Shore, shows off Staten Island accent

Jun. 20—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — One of pop's biggest superstars recently shared her spotlight with Staten Island.

Sabrina Carpenter, who is dominating Billboard's Global 200 right now, released a new music video for her song "Please Please Please" that features some familiar borough scenery: The former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility in Charleston.

The "Espresso" singer revealed via Instagram she filmed in the borough, and shared some behind-the-scenes footage on social media.

Carpenter, a born-and-raised Pennsylvanian, also showed off her best Staten Island accent (which can be seen in the first few moments of the video below).

Barbara Leatherwood, communications advisor for Broadway Stages, confirmed Carpenter and her crew used the site.

Leatherwood expressed her enthusiasm with Carpenter's choice of film location. "Broadway Stages is thrilled that Sabrina Carpenter chose to film her music video for 'Please Please Please' at our Arthur Kill Correctional Facility that is part of our 69-acre Staten Island studio production campus," said Leatherwood.

"We are honored to host such a talented artist and welcome her back to film her next music video," she added.

Arthur Kill Correctional Facility housed male inmates from 1976 to 2011, before being shut down by then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo. In 2017, the facility was acquired by Broadway Stages, a full-service film, television, live streaming and music video studio production company. The prison was then reimagined as a set studio for those who desire an "authentic penitentiary vibe," as stated on the Broadway Stages website.

Joining Carpenter in the "Please Please Please" music video was her boyfriend Barry Keoghan, an award-winning actor known for his roles in "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "Saltburn."

While the news of the music video's location is striking, there have been many productions filmed at the Charleston site. According to Broadway Stages, shows and films like "Orange is the New Black," "The Blacklist," "Daredevil," and "Ocean's 8″ have all used the facility as a backdrop for their story lines. In a July 2023 post, the company labeled itself as "Staten Island Proud" with the help of its state-of-the art film production facility, which has assisted in the economic development of the area.

Carpenter has had her foot in the industry for years, launching her acting career in 2010 with a guest role on NBC's "Law & Order: SVU." In 2014, she secured a role on the Disney Channel series "Girl Meets World," a spin-off to the widely known '90s sitcom, "Boy Meets World." "Girl Meets World" lasted three seasons.

The actress and singer dropped her first single in 2014, and her effort to create a mark in the music industry has steadily paid off. She now has five studio albums, and a new album titled "Short n' Sweet," to be released Aug. 23.

In addition to the viral surge of the "Please Please Please" music video, Carpenter announced dates for an upcoming tour via an Instagram post.

Additionally, Carpenter has launched the "Sabrina Carpenter Fund," which will help support mental health initiatives, animal welfare, and the LGBTQ+ community.
