I used the Ethique laundry bar to wash clothing in the hotel room sink on our 3-week Scandinavia trip in August. It worked great!

I use “eco-friendly” Kind brand unscented laundry sheets. You can easily tear off a piece for smaller washes. For stains, I slice off a piece of The Soap Works Stain-Remover Laundry Bar (from a Canadian company) and pack it in a small plastic bag.

I love my powder (citrus for easy rinse out) Forever New . Carry in a small zip lock bag and use for sink wash out. roll in towel, squeeze and hang to dry.

I travel with the Scrubba washing bag and, typically, use the hotel shower gel or shampoo. The Earth laundry papers are good too.

For years I used the hotel shampoo to wash my clothes but on my last trip I switched to TruEarth laundry sheets. They were a game changer I cut several full size load sheet into fourths, just the right size for a sink wash. And they are eco friendly for a win win.

For the way I travel, I like to bring powdered soap, it’s lighter weight and less messy than liquid. I usually just bring some of the Charlies laundry soap powder I use at home. I’m sensitive to fragrances so it works great for me.

I subscribed to the Earth Breeze laundry sheets over a year ago – no more big plastic jugs!! Stuffed several into a ziploc for 3 weeks in Ireland and tore some in half or used a whole sheet, depending on how much I sink washed at various stops. Next trip: 2 weeks in Spain in Feb – already committed my brain to using the 10 piece Essential wardrobe!!

I keep coming back to these. So easy to use! The pods dissolve even in cold water, remove stains and leave my clothes noticeably soft

This products broke me out in horrible hives with pain and swelling for over 6 weeks now. It took a little while to figure out it was the detergent because it’s labeled hypoallergenic but now it’s very clear. I’ve learned there is no such thing as hypoallergenic. It may be free from the most common allergens but proceed with caution. I’ve been to multiple doctors and am on 9-10 pills per day including steroids to recover from this and I’m still experiencing hives. This disrupted my life, cost me hundreds in doctor visits/medication, and I’m having to strip all my laundrey because even the slightest remnant of this detergent reactivated extremely painful itchy hives.

The store where I normally shop for detergent didn't have a small jug of the liquid free and gentle, so I bought what I thought was a small container of the pods, only to find it takes a bigger and stronger hand to open, to hold both tabs down and turn at the same. At least I can return it to the store. I'll go back to the liquid and all the plastic, so I can at least open it.

Tried with a small load. I might as well washed in lain water that’s how effective this pac was. Now I’m stuck with a container of pacs I won’t use.

I switched to these pods from liquid and a few times now the pod hasn't dissolved all the way. It gets stuck on the clothes and leaves a yellow mark when I take the goo off. I see that Tide doesn't recommend these for anything less than a "small" load, The three times they didn't dissolve was for medium sized loads. Also, what's the point of these if I can't just wash a couple of items of clothing anyways. I'm not happy with this product. I'm going back to liquid.

I have used the regular Tide product for a long time, but this porduct one left stains, and sticky residue on the clothes. There was only a few items in the washer, 3 to be exact, all stained and gooey. The pod was put in the washer before the clothes were added. We have had to clean each item by hand to get out the goo and stains. I would NOT recommend this item to anyone!! I have pictures, if you need proof!

Small arthritic hands. Have to find a neighbor to help me. I can't open the container. My children and grandchildren are all over 20 I don't need child safe containers > I do need a detergent free of dyes and scents. Because of this issue I won't be buying tide again. My store is rural and has a very small selection of detergents. I will try Arm and Hammer again

We use ti usd liquid free and clear but when that was not available any longer hubs switched to Tide Free

I’ve always struggled with sensitive skin & have spent a LOT of time finding detergent that doesn’t cause a flare up to my skin! These free & gentle tide pods haven’t cause a single flare up! The easiness of throwing in a pod instead of measuring out the liquid when i’m in a rush is such a bonus!!! Will continue buying these.

I have used Tide liquid for years, but decided to try the pods. I've done 2 loads and both came out of the dryer with melted pod residue on the laundry. The first load was assorted dark clothes washed in cold and the second load was a set of king size sheets washed in the lowest warm setting. I put the pod in the drum before the laundry as the instructions said. The internet suggests this can be avoided by using hot water or dissolving the pod in water before adding the clothes. The internet also suggests that I may be able to get the plastic residue out by soaking the items in hot water and washing again. The pods are supposed to be more convenient. This is just more work for me and more water and energy use for a second was to remove the residue. I am very disappointed.

i am 80 years old and I have used tide for most of my marriage which is 64years. l have tried many other detergents. Tide is the best. Because of allergies I always had to rinse twice. With tide free I use a normal rinse...thank you makers of tide!!!!!

I use Tide PODS® Free and Gentle Laundry Detergent for a month, I can only say that my top is very clean and fresh, all the stains disappear and also super easy to use, it does not get thrown away nor do I have to think about how much I should use, it is perfect for me.

Great product and possibly my favorite Tide pods. I have used it on machine washing some sweaters and they came out so soft to touch. The smell is also amazing. I recommend you trying this on sheets/blankets/towels.

I didn’t expect to like these detergent pods as much as I did! They definitely clean better than the brand I’ve been using. Occasionally, when I clean the sweaty stuff, I’ve had a bit of odor left over after running a normal cycle with my old brand. I usually wash those items a second time. With these, I didn’t need a second wash. They smelled clean the first go around! I really think they’re a step up over what I’ve been using. I prefer using regular detergent to pods though. So I’ll stick with tide, but try their free and clear liquid detergent next instead of my old brand.

As a mom of two littles, I only wash clothes in free and gentle laundry detergent, so these particular Tide Pods were perfect! I was interested to try this free and gentle formula. I have sensitive skin and only buy detergents that are marketed for that, and now with a baby, I’m extra cautious. I used these pods for both baby and my laundry and we didn’t have any allergies like we do with “regular” detergents. Also obviously easy to use.

I've always loved Tide products. These are great. My son has sensitive skin so I like to make sure we dont use any detergents with scents. These pods worked great. My family is sensitive to perfumes and harsh ingredients in detergents so I was a bit hesitant to try these pods. I used one pod for a small load and used 2-3 pods for larger or heavily soiled loads and the pods did a great job cleaning the clothing but more importantly it was fragrance free and didn’t have any harsh chemicals so my family didn’t have any allergic reactions! I also appreciate that the pods container had a child proof tan pull. I will definitely be using these pods going forward.

These seemed to get a normal load of laundry cleaned well. They smell fresh and feel very clean, I didn’t find any of the residue from the pods, I wash in cold water and was surprised it fully dissolved. My son and I both have sensitive skin and so far have not had any reactions.

Tide Free & Gentle pods are so easy to use. All I have to do is put one or two pods in my washer depending on the size of my load. The pods are not sticky and don't leave a resin on my hands. My skin is sensitive so most of the time I probably shouldn't use any scented laundry detergent. These pods fit the bill perfectly, and are super easy to use (easier by far than carrying a whole container of laundry detergent down the stairs to the basement laundry room). For larger loads, you'll want to use two. I found that these got my clothes and bedding clean with two pods per large load.

My family has a number of skin related sensitivities. It's pretty rare for us to find a laundry detergent that keeps everyone's skin happy, but so far the Tide PODS free and gentle have caused no issues! To say I'm thrilled is an understatement. Our clothing came out clean and no one is itchy. Win/win! The packaging has a safety zipper on it which I didn't realize was rhere at first. Once I looked at the back of the packaging the instructions were clear and I was able to open the package without struggle. The instructions were clear enough that my 10 year old who is old enough to do laundry and know not to consume laundry detergent could open it. But tricky enough that my 7 year old could not.

I generally prefer to do most of my laundry with free and gentle detergent. Just because a product is free of certain ingredients, it doesn't mean it should be less efficient and not do a good job. However, not all free and clear/gentle brands are equal. I find that Tide works much better than others. It delivers great results even when it comes to heavily soiled rags, rugs etc. I usually prefer liquid detergent, because I can control the amount much better, but truth be told pods are so much more convenient, less messy and they take less space. Plus you can store them in a glass jar in your laundry room and they look a lot better than a big plastic bottle or container. I can do small and medium loads with just one pod and they come out as expected - fresh and clean. Even if there is no scent, they have a clean smell.

The pods dissolved well in cold water, are phosphate free, and made with renewable energy. The child-guard zipper on the bag not only keeps small children out, but locks tight so there are no accidental spills.

I can not believe I never tried tide before!! I have 5 kids and none have cared for pacis or blankys or anything until my 5th child. He is 2 and he is obsessed with sucking on his blanket. So much so I had to buy 3 spares sjust so I can have extras incase they get lost of destroyed. Thry discontinued this print and it's the only one he will calm down with when freaking out. But oh boy they get so nasty! We hsve hard water and I judt can not get the dingy color, crunchy feel and smell out of these blankets! Finally I decided to try tide after trying 5 or 6 other methods and boy oh boy are they back to new! They are not perfect but they are so much brighter and they are soft again! The smell is also gone!! I personally am so very very happy. But umm my 2 yr old is not a fan haha he didn't like how clean they were. Overall I 100% recommend these to anyone with hard water, stains, smells and crunchy items you want cleaned like new!

Once in a while I get sinus allergy especially during spring time and when I do laundry with an allergy, I opt for the Free and Gentle laundry soap. It has less harsh chemical and doesn’t have a scent that could trigger my sinus headache. My wife also uses this to wash the kid’s clothing. This is definitely a must have in the laundry room. Keeps the clothes clean and it’s safer because it doesn’t have the harsh chemicals.

These are ok, they are convenient to use but doesn’t seem to leave any scent. I guess it must be from the kind I chose. I think I still prefer to use the liquid so I can control how much goes into the washer.

I find these very convenient for when our family travels but expect to use 2 per full load. I love that they don't leave a scent on the clothes. All in all, our clothes came out clean a fresh so I'm happy. For cost I think liquid soap is still a better deal but can beat the ease of these and there's no worry of spilling. :)

I love the tide free and clear pods. I have extremely sensitive skin and anything with fragrance makes my skin break out in itchy hives. The pods themself dissolve in hot or cold water with no issue and clothes come out extremely clean. I would recommend if you need fragrance/dye/chemical free detergent.

These tide cold water pods are Great. They are great because my grandson has eczema and its great to wash his clothes and other things in it. I have extremely sensitive skin, so I decided to try these tide pods, especially for things like my pillowcases/sheets where my face touches the fabric a lot. While they are unscented, I still can tell my clothes are fresh and I like they they don't have extra chemicals.

I first tried the Tide free and gentle based on a search result for lingering odors in the washer. I had used another name brand for sensitive skin for quite a long time. The Tide brand did indeed stop the smell and it really does get the laundry noticeably cleaner too

We use this for our sons laundry. He has super sensitive skin and we are teaching him how to do his own laundry. These are great under supervision to ensure he isn't using too much

There’s laundry detergent power, laundry pellets, laundry pods.

I’m a huge believer in doing laundry on the road. It means you can travel lighter because you’ll need fewer clothes.

But can you pack laundry detergent in carry-on bags or checked bags?

Let’s take a look.

TSA Rules About Laundry Detergent & Tide Pods

The Transportation Security Administration runs the security checkpoint at the airport. And TSA officers decide what can and can’t be brought on to planes in the United States.

Here is what they say about flying with solid laundry detergent:

You can pack solid laundry detergent such a powder or pellets in your carry-on bag and checked bag.

There is a rule about bringing powders. If you bring more than 12 oz of powder laundry detergent you’ll need to remove it from your bag and place it in a separate bin when going through the security checkpoint.

The TSA officer also needs to be able to open your container to inspect the powder.

Laundry pellets are a better choice. You don’t need to remove them from your bag for additional screening.

Bringing Liquid Detergent On The Plane

The TSA treats liquid laundry detergent differently from solid detergent.

You can pack liquid detergent in checked bags without restriction.

But for carry-on bags laundry detergent must be in containers less than or equal to 3.4 oz.

You also need to pack laundry detergent in your quart-size bag . Move over shampoo and shower gel!

What about laundry pods like tide pods?

Well, Jack asked the TSA this question on Twitter to get clarification:

The TSA considers tide pods or other laundry pods to be a liquid. A single tide pod has less than 1 oz of liquid so it is under the limit.

But if you are taking liquid or gel laundry pods in hand luggage you must pack them in your quart-size bag alongside your other toiletries.

That might be fine if you only need one or two washes. If you are going for a longer trip then consider solid pellets as an alternative.

You can ping the TSA a message on Twitter and ask them about bringing any item on a plane.

The Verdict

Doing laundry while traveling is a great idea. At the very least, it means if your suitcase is searched on the way home you won’t need to “air your dirty laundry in public”.

Where you can pack laundry detergent depends on what form it is.

Solid pellets can be packed anywhere. This is the best choice if you are going for a long trip and want to take a lot of detergent with you.

Detergent powder is fine in checked baggage, but for hand luggage, it could cause delays at the security checkpoint if you pack more than 12 oz.

Liquid detergent can be packed in checked bags but remember your airline might have weight limits for checked baggage.

Liquid detergent can be packed in hand luggage in containers less than 3.4 ounces. This includes liquid laundry pods, but they’ve got to go in your clear plastic toiletries bag.

Also, remember they probably sell laundry detergent where you are going so don’t go crazy!

Also, a portable clothes steamer is a good idea if you just want to be able to freshen clothes up to wear them a second time.
