If you’re looking for a Greek escape away from the crowds, this overlooked and underrated island in the Northern Sporades can turn your dreams to reality.

Though it’s better known than its low key (but incredibly gorgeous) neighbour Alonissos , Skopelos certainly isn’t a part of the usual Greece tourist trail. While the rest of the world flocks to Santorini and Mykonos for their whitewashed villages and Instagrammable viewpoints, Skopelos offers a relaxed but authentic alternative, as well as far better value for money.

The middle of summer does see the island turn into a bustling hub of travellers, many domestic visitors or international travellers on organised package tours, but outside of July/August and beyond the main tourist spots I can guarantee you’ll be able to find a slice of paradise just for yourself.

I visited Skopelos in late June 2023 and swiftly fell in love, Greece was already one of my favourite countries in Europe but this island gem pushed it even higher on my list. I couldn’t find a huge amount of information on the Sporades islands due to the lower tourist numbers there so I wanted to put together a detailed Skopelos travel guide to help you plan your trip!

In this travel guide I’ll give you loads of practical info on Skopelos, share some of the island’s best things to do, see and eat, and give some suggestions on where to stay too.

All you need to know about Skopelos, Greece

Is skopelos worth visiting.

100% it is! With its untouched natural beauty and a calm vibe that’s increasingly rare in popular Greek islands, Skopelos is more than worth visiting. It’s got decent infrastructure that make it accessible and easy to travel around, plenty of untouched beaches to explore, a brilliant local culinary scene and loads of authentic character.

What is Skopelos known for?

Aside from its lush scenery, Skopelos gained fame as the filming location for the 2008 hit ‘Mamma Mia!’. The island’s cinematic history draws some movie buff international travellers, and there are organised filming location tours to tick off the key spots you’d recognise in the film.

Where is Skopelos, Greece?

Located in the Northern Sporades, Skopelos lies east of mainland Greece, nestled between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos.

How to get to Skopelos

There’s no airport on Skopelos, but you can catch a one hour ferry from Skiathos (an island with the nearest airport) or a 2h 45m ferry from Volos on the mainland (which is accessible by plane or bus).

How to get around Skopelos

It’s best to rent a car, scooter or quad bike to explore the island at your own pace.

There are local buses that go to most of the main tourist spots, but the schedule is limited so if you get to a beach and change your mind due to the crowds, you might need to wait a couple of hours until the next bus comes past.

If you don’t want to drive then the easiest way to see the island would be with organised tours, there are various operators that run different routes like beach-hopping trips, the Mamma Mia bus tour or hiking tours.

How long to visit Skopelos

Ideally a 4-5 day Skopelos itinerary allows enough time to soak up the island’s beauty, but if you have more time then a week would let you fully embrace the laidback island lifestyle.

I visited for three days and felt a bit rushed to see and do everything, an extra day or two would’ve made it a more comfortable trip.

When is the best time to visit Skopelos

Late spring (May/June) and early autumn (September/October) are ideal. You’ll enjoy warm weather and fewer crowds. July and August are peak tourist months, so expect more hustle and bustle, more tour buses and inflated prices.

Weather in Skopelos

Skopelos enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, while springs and autumns are mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring and beach-hopping.

Busy season in Skopelos

July and August are the busiest, which means higher accommodation rates, busier restaurants and packed beaches. It’s nothing like what you’d see in Santorini and Mykonos in those months, but it’s definitely not going to show you the island at its best.

If you prefer a quieter experience, aim for the shoulder months when the weather is still lovely, but the crowds have thinned.

Is Skopelos safe for solo female travellers?

Yes, Skopelos is generally safe for solo female travellers and I felt comfortable the entire time I was there.

Like any travel destination, it’s always wise to stay aware of your surroundings, but the island’s laid-back and friendly atmosphere makes it a welcoming place for everyone.

Where else can you visit near Skopelos?

Consider hopping over to Skiathos or Alonissos . Each island has its own unique charm and is well worth a visit if you have extra time in the Sporades.

Where to stay in Skopelos

Budget | There are some excellent places to stay in Skopelos even if you’re on a tight budget. Consider Stolios , Dafni Studios , Studios Filippos , Irene’s Paradise and Spiros Rooms for a cheap sleep.

Mid-range | Aegean Wave , Fasolaki , Niki Apartments , Aperitton Hotel and Panormos Beach Hotel are all top-rated mid-range options.

Luxury | Adrina Beach Hotel , Skopelos Holidays & Hotel and Olia Green are luxury options with great reviews, or for a real treat you could consider Adrina Resort & Spa , a 5* beachfront paradise.

For a group | Villa Kingstone looks gorgeous and can fit four people, Stargaze Villas has space for eight adults and Villa Aelia can fit 11.

Things to do in Skopelos

Take a mamma mia tour.

A Mamma Mia tour is one of the most popular things to do in Skopelos, and your trip won’t be complete without ticking off filming locations while singing along to ABBA’s greatest hits!

The two main movie spots that the tours visit are Agios Ioannis (the Chapel of St John), Agnontas and Kastani Beach, but some may include a couple more.

You can book this top-rated bus tour or this tour is a small-group option , or just rent your own vehicle and visit the locations on your own time.

travel around skopelos

Visit Agios Ioannis

Even if you’re not fussed about the fact it was featured in the movie, Agios Ioannis is still totally worth a visit. Perched on top of a 100m rock in the sea, you’ve got to climb 100+ narrow steps precariously carved into the stone to reach it.

The church at the top is tiny, but the view back towards the mainland is what really will blow your mind.

Cruise around the island

Seeing Skopelos by sea is a must-do, and there are a number of local operators who run incredible half-day and full-day cruises to different bays and beaches around the island.

Some cruises include a BBQ lunch or packed lunch, some might visit the nearby islands of Alonissos and/or Skiathos, most of them include at least one snorkel or swim stop, and most of them take you into the National Marine Park of Alonissos.

The boat schedules vary depending on the month and there’s not a huge amount of reliable information online, so your best bet is to head to the port in Skopelos when you arrive and talk to the operators who have stalls in front of their boats, or head into a local travel agency.

If you’d prefer to book a private trip for you and your travel buddies, this top-rated private boat tour has space for up to six people.

Explore the hills of the old town

Skopelos’ Old Town is a labyrinth of winding alleyways flanked by traditional white houses with flower gardens and colourful doors, you might think you were in Mykonos if it weren’t for the fact it’s so quiet!

Go for a walk and get lost in the historical centre, just be respectful of the fact these are people’s homes and don’t disrupt the locals.

If you prefer to learn about destinations from local guides, my top recommendation would be to do the Secrets of Skopelos Town tour , it’s rated 5/5 and includes a guided walking tour, local wine tasting and dinner in a traditional taverna. Dreamy!

travel around skopelos

See the church of Panagitsa tou Pyrgou (Holy Mary of the Castle)

Move over blue domes, this 17th century church has got to be one of the most Instagrammable buildings in Greece thanks to its traditional Greek architecture and magnificent panoramic outlook.

Standing above Skopelos Harbour and looking out to the Aegean Sea, the chapel is easily reached by a short but steep walk from the port area. The chapel interior is equally impressive, with frescoes and other religious artwork dating back hundreds of years. The church is meant to be open to visitors during the day but when I went (June 2023) it was closed, so I’m not sure if that was a one-off or just an island-time kind of thing!

If you do want to go inside you’ll need to wear appropriate clothing and ensure your knees and shoulders are covered.

travel around skopelos

Just like the neighbouring island of Alonissos , Skopelos offers incredible diving opportunities for those keen to discover the world below the surface.

The crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea, combined with varied underwater topography of caves, coral reefs and shipwrecks, make it the perfect place to scuba for both beginners and experienced divers.

I spent a day on and under the water with the top-rated Skopelos Dive Center , they have a couple of bases on the island and they run snorkelling, scuba diving, freediving and paddle boarding trips.

Soak up the sun at the stunning beaches

Skopelos is home to countless beaches and bays, ranging from organised ones with amenities through to totally unspoiled ones hidden from the main roads.

Some of the beaches to add to your Skopelos itinerary are:

  • Milia Beach – A popular one but for good reason, this has some of the clearest water I’ve ever, ever seen in my life (and I’ve seen a lot of clear water!). With striking white pebbles, stunning views out to Dasia island and plenty of space, it’s ideal for all types of travellers.

travel around skopelos

  • Hovolo Beach – The photos don’t even do Hovolo justice, you really have to see this place with your own eyes. It’s a bit less accessible than most of the others on this list which means there are fewer people, just wear appropriate footwear (rock shoes would be ideal) and be careful not to slip.
  • Limnonari Beach – My eyes almost fell out of my head as I drove into Limnonari, the view from the road as you wind around overlooking the bay is mind-blowing. There were lots of families here but there’s a beach bar with an adults-only area if that’s more your vibe (read more below).

travel around skopelos

  • Kastani Beach – Perhaps an unpopular opinion but Kastani wasn’t my favourite beach on the island, it was gorgeous of course but the crowds were off-putting for me. Still epic to see and all Mamma Mia tours stop there (hence the crowds) but if you’re looking for somewhere to spend the afternoon then choose elsewhere.
  • Amarandos Cove – Insanely blue water with pine trees stretching down into the ocean, Amarandos is a bit tricky to get to (easier for those with quad bikes) but it’s worth the journey if you decide to make it.
  • Panormos Beach – A beautiful pebble beach with a bunch of tavernas and cafes dotted around it, great for a lunch stop with a swim afterwards.

travel around skopelos

Beach clubs

For those who like to add good tunes and party vibes to their beach holiday, there are a few beach clubs around the island serving up happy hour cocktails and epic views at the same time.

Some popular beach clubs in Skopelos are:

  • Milia Beach Bar – beautifully clear water, great snorkelling and some water sports
  • Limnonari Apanemo Beach Bar – a stunning bay with a sophisticated beach bar that includes an adults-only pool
  • Kastani Beach Bar – loads of loungers (on both grass and sand) and other amenities, plus a decent food and drink menu
  • Glysteri Beach Bar – a more upmarket beach bar option with good music, comfortable sunbeds and top-rated service

Expect to pay around 10-15EUR for a pair of shaded sunbeds, and some beach bars have a minimum food/drink consumption in the busy season

travel around skopelos

See the monasteries

Beyond the wonderfully picturesque beaches and charming old town, Skopelos is also home to several historically significant monasteries hidden amongst the hills.

Each of the monasteries offers a unique glimpse into the island’s past and present culture, and when you see the views from them you’ll understand why those spots were chosen!

Please note that the monasteries are sometimes open for visitors but often this is dependent on who is around rather than a specific schedule, so don’t be disappointed if they’re closed when you get there. Take something to cover your shoulders and knees if you do want to go inside.

Some of the best monasteries to visit are:

  • Monastery of Evangelistria
  • Monastery of Agios Riginos
  • Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa
  • Monastery of Timios Prodromos
  • Monastery of Sotiras Christos
  • Monastery of the Metamorphosis

travel around skopelos

Skopelos’ diverse terrain offers numerous hiking trails that cater to all levels.

There are plenty of easy trails along the gorgeous coastline, or for a more challenging trek the Monasteries Tour is a 7.4km moderate-difficulty loop track along paths that connect ancient monasteries and historical settlements, or the hike up Palouki Peak offers divine views after a bit of a slog to get there.

There’s a guided hiking tour for those of you who’d prefer to hike with a guide.

travel around skopelos

Rent a boat

Renting a boat in Skopelos offers the freedom to explore its stunning coastline at your own pace. Discover secluded coves, swim in crystal-clear waters, and even visit nearby uninhabited islands (be sure to check any local regulations to protect wildlife).

Boat rentals are available online or you can organise them at the main port, with options ranging from small motorboats to larger yachts, and many do not require a boating license.

Indulge in local cuisine

There’s plenty of places to eat in Skopelos, and because it’s less of a touristy island, the value for money is brilliant.

My favourite spots are:

  • El Atrio (my absolute top recommendation)
  • First Creperie and Pizzerie (fantastic pasta)
  • SPIRA Brewery
  • Plateia for a super cute dinner setting
  • Magali for cheap and cheerful gyros
  • Paraporti and Vrachos for cocktails
  • Decimo for a delicious brunch and great WiFi

With its picturesque atmosphere and stunning beaches, it’s no wonder this idyllic destination has become a favourite amongst couples and families seeking a serene escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Arguably the most charming aspects of Skopelos are its two main settlements: the postcard-worthy main port of Skopelos Town, situated on the southeast coast, and the equally delightful village of Glossa in the northwest, just 2km north of the island’s second port, Loutraki.

Within these charming locales, visitors can stroll through cobbled streets, explore ancient monasteries, and indulge in the island’s serene, laid-back lifestyle.

Pine forests, olive groves, rippling vineyards and orchards of plums and almonds (many of which find their way into local cuisine) carpet the handsome island of Skopelos, which is notably wilder, artier and more laid-back than neighbouring Skiathos. Though famed for its starring role in the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, Skopelos has managed to hang on to its low-key charm. The island's sheltered southeast coast harbours a string of beautiful sand-and-pebble beaches, while the northwest coast's high jagged cliffs are exposed to the elements.

Where is & how to get to Skopelos

Tucked away in the shimmering waters of the Aegean Sea, Skopelos boasts stunning beaches and landscapes. Nestled between its well-known neighbors, Skiathos and Alonnisos, this island often flies under the radar of many who plan a visit to the Sporades archipelago. But trust me you won’t want to let this gem out of your itinerary.

To the north of Skopelos lies Thessaloniki, to the west Pelion and to the south Athens. But non of these major hubs in Greece are close enough to make the trip a breeze. Nor has Skopelos an airport to facilitate arrivals. That’s why finding your way to Skopelos may not seem straightforward at a first glance. But don’t worry, it’s actualy simpler than it appears. Here are the 3 main options to get to the island:

  • The first and simplest option is to fly in to the island of Skiatho s, which gets flights from multiple European capitals in the summer months. From there, you can take a 30 minutes ferry to the port of Skopelos. The ferries run multiple times a days during high season. Tickets cost 14€ and can be booked in advance here.
  • A second option is to fly to Thessaloniki in the North of Greece. A variety of airlines service this city, including several budget-friendly options. From Thessaloniki port you can get a ferry directly to Skopelos. The trip takes approximately 3,5 hours and costs 60€ each way. Tickets can be booked in advance here.
  • An alternative option is to fly to Athens , drive to Volos and from there get a ferry boat to Skopelos. The trip takes approximately 3 hours and costs 55€ each way. Tickets can be booked in advance here.

How long to stay in Skopelos

Despite being a small island, Skopelos is packed with beautiful beaches and things to do. Thus, I’d recommend staying for at least 5 days to enjoy the best it has to offer. That’s what we did and felt it was a resonable amount of time to enjoy the best Skopelos has to offer. However, if you’re in a lazy vacation mood, I’d say extending your stay to 7 days would be ideal. Rather than devoting your entire holiday to Skopelos alone, consider also allocating some days to explore Skiathos. 3 or 4 days should suffice. This neighboring island is equally enchanting, and traveling between the two is a breeze!

Best time to visit Skopelos

The weather in Skopelos is relatively warm all year round, but Spring and Summer are typically the best time to visit the island. The   end of spring (May to June) and late summer (September to early October) are particularly great periods to travel, as the crowds are fewer and the rates lower compared to the ones during peak summer.

Although we visited Skopelos in the end of July and got positively surprised about how tranquil the island was. Different from other Greek Islands, I’d say Skopelos is an appropriate destination for the buzzling summer weeks of July and August . It will hardly get as packed as some other Eurosummer hotspots. Or as expensive as some other popular islands in Greece.

Best things to do in Skopelos

There are many amazing beaches and charming villages to visit in Skopelos. In addition to other incredible attractions, such as the Agios Ioannis church, featured in the Mama Mia movie. We spent 5 full days in the island and enjoyed every second of it. Especially the ones spent bathing in the the crystal clear blue Aegean waters. This islands is really a dreamy holiday destination and here’s a list with our favorite things to do in Skopelos.

1) Skopelos Town

Skopelos town is the gateaway to the island, as it’s where most ferry boats arrive and depart from. It’s the area most visitors chose to stay, so it has a good number of restaurants, bars and shops to be explored. As the sun sets, the town comes alive with both tourists and locals gathering to enjoy the magical atmosphere this coastal village exudes.

Best things to do Skopelos Greece

While in Skopelos Town, make sure to wander around its narrow alleys filled with cute shops. Also visit the Church of the Virgin Mary (Panagitsa of Pyrgos) and the beautiful views from there. The Venetian Castle is another point of interest in Skopelos town. After visiting the landmarks take the time to stroll in Skopelos waterfront and pick a place to sit and have a delicious meal. I’ll spare the restaurants recommendations for a later topic, but should let you know upfront that there are many great places to eat and drink in Skopelos town. You’ll surely have a great evenings there!

2) Hovolo Beach

Hovolo is the most beautiful beach in Skopelos. It’s straight out of a dream with its long extension and crystal clear blue waters. Getting there may not be easy, but it’s worth all the effort. You should head to Neo Klima village and park in the vicinities of Capitan Spyros restaurant. From there, take the trail that leads to the beach and continue until the very last part of it. You’ll be greeted by a magnificent beach surrounded by imposing cliffs.

Hovolo beach in Skopelos Greece

There’s no structure at the beach, so make sure to bring refreshments and snacks. You should also bring shelter from the sun, as shadows are sparse. We always bring a sun tent to Greece and consider this the best way to enjoy the country’s wild beaches. The water in Hovolo is not only beautiful, but also really comfortable to swim in. Paradise if you ask me!

3) Kastani Beach

After Hovolo, Kastani was the most beautiful beach we visited in Skopelos. It’s where a lot of Mama Mia scenes were recorded. And to be honest, I thought the beach was way more beautiful in real life than in the screens. The water in Kastani is super clear and has the most beautiful blue tone. Temperature is amazing, which invited us to explore the nearby coves and shore, which you can actually spot in the pictures. We spent so much time swimming there and could never get enough of it.

Best beaches Skopelos

There is a very well established beach bar at Kastani Beach, where we spent the day. While I must confess the music was a bit too loud for my taste, the amenities offered by Kastani Beach Bar more than compensated. A pair of sun beds with an umbrella cost 10€ and you can stay for as long you want. Their menu is reasonably priced and comprised of light meals such as salads, wraps and sandwiches. It was a great place to chill and enjoy a day at the beach. However, if you prefer, you can also bring your own gear and set camp at the beach. It’s a short one, so expect to close to other beach-goers.

While visiting Kastani, make sure to swim to the nearby coves on the left side. The water there is so pristine it almost seem unreal. You can also check these coves if you walk the trail connecting Kastani to Milia. Which is something I definitely recommend!

3) Milia Beach

Despite being so close to Kastani Beach, Milia doesn’t have the same water color tone. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a beautiful beach and it has good structure. But I must confess it wasn’t my favorite spot in Skopelos. I’d definitely prioritize spending the day at Kastani, which is just around the corner. But at the same time I’d recommend checking Milia out, especially if you’re up for the hike between the two beaches. That’s what we did and absolutely loved the views!

While Milia Beach is just a stone’s throw away from Kastani Beach, their waters showcase different hues. Milia is undeniably beautiful and boasts good structure, but it didn’t quite capture my heart as Kastani did. I’d definitely prioritize spending the day at Kastani, which is just around the corner, instead of Milia. However, I’d still recommend checking Milia out. Especially if you’re up for the hike between the two beaches. That’s what we did and absolutely loved the views!

3) Chapel of St. John (Ioannis)

A little break from the beaches to mention the super unique and gorgeous Church of Agios Ionannis. A chapel sitting atop a huge rock with the most beautiful views. It’s been featured in Mama Mia and is a very popular place to visit in Skopelos. To sidestep the crowds and the intense midday heat, we arrived bright and early at around 8 am. It was the best decision and allowed to enjoy the chapel almost by ourselves, which added to the magical atmosphere. The panoramic views from up there are simply unbelievable. The dazzling water hues and the beach at the bottom of the church create the most surreal views!

Mama Mia church Skopelos Greece

I’d recommend visiting the chapel early morning or close to sunset. The morning is particularly advantageous, as parking becomes quite a challenge as the day progresses. Wear comfortable shoes and come prepared to climb the 105 steps leading to the church. It’ll be worth it, I swear. We loved visiting this distinct place, especially after having watched Mama Mia movie. This was the setting for Sophies wedding, even though church’s interior doesn’t quite reflect what’s depicted in the movie.

4) Agios Ioannis Beach

Below the Chapel of St. John lies Agios Ioannis Beach, one of the most pristine beaches in the whole of Skopelos. The water there is crystal clear and the ocean warm and calm. It’s a perfect place for a refreshing dip after having climbed the to the church. That’s precisely what we did and loved bathing in such pristine waters.

If you prefer to spend the day at Agios Ioannis Beach arrive early. There are some sunbeds and umbrellas being rented at the beach for 10€. But in the high season, they’re likely to be taken by 10.30 maximum. There’s a taverna right above the beach, where you can get meals and refreshments for the day.

Agios Ioannis Beach Skopelos

5) Amarandos Cove

This small rocky cape is adorned with a couple of lonely tree and surrounded by the most pristine blue waters. It has become the landmark of Skopelos and it’s indeed a beautiful sight. Amarandos was a Mama Mia location, reason why it’s quite popular amongst visitors. We both loved this spot, especially the views and coves that surrounds it. There a couple of small coves to the left which are pretty great to swim in. The sheer beauty of this spot had us in a state of awe!

Amarando cove Skopelos Greece

6) Panormos Beach

Panormos is a beautiful bay surrounded by two islets and the lushest landscapes. The waters are so calm it looks like a lagoon rather than a beach. There are many restaurants by the water offering sunbeds to its clients. We had lunch at Linarakia Restaurant and absolutely loved the food. The moussaka was the best I had in the whole trip, and trust me, I’ve had my fair share of moussakas!

I’d recommend spending some time at this calm beach making the most of its structure. Every so often, excursion ships make their brief stops, momentarily transforming the beach into a bustling hub. But as quickly as they arrive, they depart, restoring the serene ambiance of the beach.

7) Glossa village

Glossa is the second biggest town in Skopelos and is located in the north of the island. Nestled on the mountainside, the town is laid out in an amphitheatrical fashion, which gives it a very imposing feel. It’s houses are really charming, mostly white washed with orange tiled roofs. Most of them have balconies overlooking the ocean adding to their charming features.

Glossa Skopelos Greece

Our visit to Glossa was perfectly timed with sunset, and it was an absolute delight. Strolling through its enchanting alleys and immersing ourselves in the authentic Greek ambiance was an experience to cherish. We checked the church at the base of the village, right by the beach. Later, we treated ourselves to a delicious meal at Vrahos Restaurant. Positioned right by the water, this restaurant not only offers a mesmerizing view of the setting sun but also serves the freshest of seafood.

8) Limnonari Beach

Limnonari is a stunning beach boasting crystal clear emerald green waters. The beach is lined with inviting bars that promise a day of pure relaxation. We chose Limonari Beach Bar, the first one as you arrive. They charge a 25€ cover charge which you can spend on drinks and food. Given they have a really good restaurant, I’d say it’s a fair deal. Our day there was spent bathing in the calm emerald waters, reading and snacking on authentic greek food. The structure of the restaurant is really good and includes showers, which I really appreciated!

Limnonari beach Skopelos

9) Stafilos beach

It’s the closest beach to Skopelo town with crystal clear water and structure. Thus, it can get quite busy during summer. Being specially popular amongst families, as the calm waters of the beach offer a safe heaven to kids. We didn’t stay at this beach, but it the structure seemed quite good.

10) Perivoliou Beach

This wild beach located at the northmost part of Skopelos is a gem. The water is really pristine and the landscape gorgeous. A perfect spot for spending a calm day at the beach. Since there’s no structure make sure to bring refreshments and snacks. As well as shelter from the sun, as shadows are sparse.

11) Visit monasteries

There are many monasteries in Skopelos which were built between the 15th and 18th century. They are all monuments of the islands and deserve a visit. Monastery of Timios Prodromos, Metamorfosi Sotira, Panagia Evangelistria and Agia Varvara are the most fascinating. They are open to the public and have some sort of exhibition, which can vary from antique books to beautiful frescoes.

Skopelos is rich with history, and this is showcased through the monasteries standing in the island. Most of which were constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries. These monasteries aren’t just relics of the past; they’re living testimonials to the island’s rich heritage. Monastery of Timios Prodromos, Metamorfosi Sotira, Panagia Evangelistria and Agia Varvara are the most fascinating. Each offers its own unique appeal, from antique tomes to intricate frescoes. they warmly welcome visitors, allowing a deeper dive into the island’s religious and artistic past.

How to get around Skopelos

If you want to explore Skopelos well, you’ll need a car, ATV, or motorcycle. Cars are, in my opinion, the best way to explore the island. Renting a car will not only allow you to explore villages and get to the best beaches on the island. It will also provide you a safe refugee from the extreme sun and heat typical of summer months – which is something an ATV or motorcycle can’t provide.

We rented a car with Magic cars and had a pleasant experience . They charged 50€ per day for a C category vehicle which comfortably held 4 people. We were greeted by a representative of the company at the port, making the key collection process seamless. Returning the car was just as hassle-free; we simply dropped it off at the same location before boarding our ferry. All in all, I’d recommend their services!

Where to stay in Skopelos

We spent 5 days in Skopelos and split our stay in 2 different areas. The first 3 days were spent at Neo Klima village. Which is conveniently located between the most beautiful beaches in the island. Once we explored the northwestern coast, we headed back to Skopelos town, where we spent 2 more nights. I definitely recommend following a similar itinerary to avoid long drives from Skopelos town to the beaches in the north. Here are the top hotel picks in Skopelos:

Stamatiou Estate

Oasis Deluxe Apartments

Anna Maria – Vanessa Apartments

Evlalia Studios & Villas

Skopelos Village Hotel

Villea Seaview Apartments

Where to eat in Skopelos

Skopelos is a foodies paradise. The local dishes, such as cheese pie and meatballs with a sweet and sour sauce with plums, are delicious. And so are the dishes based on seafood served by the local tavernas. The fishes, shrimps, octopus and squids are as fresh as it gets, most often caught during the same day.

We indulged in varied and tasty meals during our stay in Skopelos. To be honest, the Greek cuisine is one of the main factors that keep us coming back to the country. We’ve been 3 times now and can’t wait to come back soon. The moussakas, souvalakis, saganakis and many other dishes are to die for. These were our favorite restaurants in Skopelos. Try it for yourselves and thank me later!

What to pack for Skopelos

As you will most probably be visiting Skopelos during spring or summer in Greece, you should be prepared for very sunny and warm days. Hence, my suggestion is that you pack light and fresh clothes, beachwear, and casual shoes. Aim for beach attire and bring a light jacket just in case – chances are that you are not going to need it!

How long to stay in Skopelos

For women: you should pack summer and fresh dresses in various styles, from flouncy to long ones. Skirts, linen pants, fresh tops, and shorts are also great items to bring to Lefkada. Flat and comfortable shoes should be your way to go and you absolutely won’t need high heels or heavy makeup.

For men: You can pack linen shirts and fresh fabric shirts, as well as t-shirts, shorts, and fresh pants. Shoes should be casual and comfortable, with no need for fancy items.

You will also need:

  • Beach shoes for pebble beaches
  • Sun screen with maximun UV protection

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island

Table of Contents

Why have an itinerary for skopelos island anyway.

Like most people, when booking a holiday for a Greek island you don’t have a specific itinerary in mind. It’s only Skopelos – a small dot in the Aegean Sea and you’ll manage just fine without one.

You’d be surprised to know that more than half of our visitors will end-up having a week’s holiday, (or even more), without any plan at all. As a result, at the end of their break, they will have missed visiting many attractions and beautiful sights Skopelos Island has to offer.

You don’t want to reach Day 5 of your 7-day holiday and all you’ve seen is just 2 beaches and the beautiful view of our properties.

Now, more than ever, it’s really important to change the travel habits of our past – LINK TO LATEST COVID TRAVEL-. We need to emerge more into the local culture, see more of what Skopelos Island has to offer.

Having a Guide written by a local will help you decide what to see and do while here. It will be your starting point for your wandering adventures. It will make it much easier to have Skopelos Country Villas act as the starting point for each place suggested in this Itinerary.

It’s helpful having a plan, even if you end up doing some of the activities listed here.

If you’re reading this and you still haven’t booked your holiday break with us, you can Forget Everything you Know about renting Skopelos Villas and see how you can save money when booking accommodation.

Day 1 - Arriving in Skopelos Island

Consider this day as the ‘Boot Camp’ for Skopelos.

Arrival at Skopelos port.

You will be met by me here, (unless otherwise informed). Your car hire has been organised to be picked up either at the port or the office.

Your first glimpse of Skopelos town towering over the port will enhance your notion of a Greek island.

Beautifully arranged and amphitheatrically built, full of white-washed houses with red-tiled roofs.

Mount Palouki, (the 2nd highest on Skopelos Island), covered with a thick coat of various shades of green, warmly welcomes you.

Becoming acquainted with the roads - not as hard as you'd think

Just follow my car as we slowly make our way to Skopelos Country Villas.

We drive around the outskirts of town, by following its ring road as we ascend to the top of Skopelos. Yes, traffic may seem a little weird and less organised than usual, but consider it as part of your ‘immersion experience’. We soon drive off this road by taking the quieter, country roads.

This is the part you find hard to believe! Even in the heart of the summer, Skopelos remains the greenest island in the whole area. Your brain plays tricks with your conscious self, making you forget you’re on a Greek island.

After a short, 15-minute drive, we arrive at your villa. The ‘WOW’ factor of the views unfolding before your eyes immediately remind you of the exact reasons you chose this place.

Your first day is a great chance to get your bearings in Skopelos town. The port area is your first contact. It is full of charming waterside cafes, tavernas and shops.

A great chance to unwind and have something to eat.

If you find that you have some left-over energy after your meal, this is your chance to utilise it. Walk around the waterfront area, discover some of the hundreds of small streets and alleys.

It will be a very inspiring ending to a full day!

Day 2 - Exploring the West Coast of Skopelos Island

Wake up! It’s a glorious day out there and a perfect opportunity to catch that early morning light!

The glorious sunrise awaits you! Seriously, you really need to make an effort to see at least one sunrise from here. It is the perfect spot for ‘Sunrise Watching’.

The energy around you is incredible at that time of the morning!

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island

Time for some strong coffee and a good breakfast too! Are you brave enough for an early morning pool dip? This will surely awaken you.

Today, you will be driving to the west coast of Skopelos. It’s time for your first swim in the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.

The west side of the island has some of the most magnificent beaches of Skopelos.

Get your cameras ready as you will take one of the most breathtaking drives.

The Delfi Mountain-Scenic Route of Skopelos  offers many stopover points. You ought to get out of your car and take in all the vista views of the coastline below you. Mount Delfi, is the highest point of Skopelos Island, (685 m) and is totally covered by tall Pine trees.

This thick pine forest has greeted thousands of visitors like you as they drive down towards the small, sleepy town of Elios.

This Route will become your All-time favourite

A winding road I never grow bored of driving. A thrilling ride that will manage to spell-bind you with its majestic views.

At the end of this route, you will reach a small junction. A right turn will lead you to Elios town.

This sleepy seaside town is home to one of the Top Skopelos Beaches  and a few seafood tavernas.

If you take a left from this junction, you’ll be heading towards Kastani Beach, (aka Mamma Mia Beach).

It’s up to you to decide whether you indulge yourselves with this popular Mamma Mia beach today or continue around the bay.

Milia Beach is just around the bay. This is one of my very favourites and the longest stretch of beach Skopelos has to offer.

Be proud of your achievement for the day!

You saw a good part of the mountains and part of the magnificent west. Let’s head back to Skopelos Country Villas by driving back up through the Scenic Route.

Time to relax by the pool and catch the last reflections of the sunset light bouncing off the mountains to the east!

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island

Day 3 - Getting lost in Skopelos Town

The best way to explore the town is to wander through its maze of alleys and cobblestone streets.

You can’t claim that you’ve seen Skopelos town unless you get lost at least twice.

My recommendation is to drive to the port parking area to leave your car there.

Walk all around the waterfront area and head to the old port.

There is a ‘Sailor’s Monument’ there, and shortly after, you will see the picturesque church of ‘Panagia tou Pirgou’. You can’t miss this church as it has been a proud landmark of Skopelos Island for many decades.

This is where your 'Skopelos Island - Cross-Fit' session begins.

You need to wear some comfortable shoes, (preferably trainers), as there is nothing else on this route other than steps.

It is well worth your energy, however, as you will be rewarded with some great views from the historic edge of Skopelos town.

There are 5 chapels along this ascending road, each with its own history through the Greek ‘Dark Ages of the Ottoman rule’.

As you make your way up, you will also pass a very chilled-out Cafe called ‘Thalassa”. It rests on the first of 2 squares you’ll walk through and borders one of the oldest churches, “Evangelistria”.

The views towards the endless blue sea are heart-stirring. The owners are a bit quirky, but the views and music alone more than make up for this.

The very next square, (after climbing another endless array of steps), rewards you with one of the very best views Skopelos town has to offer.

Taking the time to notice the scenery

Make sure you give yourselves the time to absorb the scenery around you.

You won’t find this panoramic view anywhere else! It is also one of my favourite hang out spots since I was actually born in this neighbourhood.

We still live here, and I use it as my ‘serenity’ place.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island - Views from Old Town - Kastro

You will also see the last church along this route.

The church of ‘Agios Athanasios’ is probably one of the 2 oldest churches on the island. If the doors are open while you’re there, make sure you go inside.

The remaining frescoes decorating its stone walls date back to approx. 14th century.

This is the east side of ‘Kastro’, (the Castle), and its remnants still stand guard to the vast Aegean Sea that unfolds before them.

Walk to the very top of Kastro where you will pass a taverna that occupies the north-east corner.

In the evenings, Greek Blues Live music mingles with the hardships of the past. The terrors and the battles of the locals are still hovering about, through their successful efforts to fend off the relentless Pirates of the Aegean. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island - Kastro walls

Your descent into Skopelos town

As soon as you walk through this place, you will notice wooden railings at the top and cobblestone steps going down.

This is the best part of Kastro. Its walls have been preserved through the centuries, all the way to the foundation.

You can touch the ‘Cyclopian’ boulders that were used to fortify this residential area and get glimpses of its glorious past.

Any road you follow from this point will eventually lead you back down to the port.

Meanwhile, get ready to discover the small streets and traditional architecture of Skopelos town.

Bonus Tip - Do you still have some left-over energy?

It will be an even more rewarding day if you can manage a drive up to the monasteries.

If you follow the road that takes you around Skopelos bay, it will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the very top.

Just follow the signs pointing towards ‘Moni Evangelismou’ and ‘Moni Prodromou, (the furthers on this group of monasteries).

Start driving uphill, conquering Mount Palouki.

There are at least 2 stopover points halfway where you need to step out of your car and take some spectacular photos.

It is mostly an asphalted road all the way to the top of the mountain.

The architecture of the monasteries varies and is very interesting to see.

The views from 570 meters towards  Skopelos bay below you will remain embedded in your memories for many months to come.

Day 4 - Reaching the north-east corner of Skopelos Island

A day of adventure begins!

This is the day where you will realise that Skopelos Island is not just a tiny island. It will take most of your day, so take all your swimming gear with you and plenty of water.

Wild, sea-beaten, vegetation lives side-by-side with untouched Pine forests. The rugged sea cliffs scattered all along, seem to be the only sentinels of the powerful north winds for this luscious, virgin landscape. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

You will be driving on what seems to be an endless road to reach the ‘ Mamma Mia Chapel  of ‘Agios Ioannis’.

This is where a 4x4 would've come in handy

You can take the more adventurous route and follow the unsurfaced road of the east coast, (if you have a 4×4), or follow the Scenic Route mentioned earlier.

If you follow the east coast route you can witness one of the most rugged but magnificent coasts that Skopelos Island has to offer.

Wild, sea-beaten, vegetation lives side-by-side with untouched Pine forests. The rugged cliffs scattered all along, seem to be the only sentinels of this virgin landscape.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island - Driving along the East coast

As you reach the end of this road on the north side, (shaped like a bottleneck on the map),  you can glimpse both the east and west sides of the island.

You’re now very close to the Mamma Mia Rock.

After a brief descend off this route, you’ll be driving on the main, coastal road towards Glossa.

Look for the sign on the right of this road, pointing you down to the chapel of Agios Ioannis.

Visiting this place and making an effort to drive here is a MUST.

Aside from the ‘Mamma Mia’ madness, this was always a special place. A sight that only a few more savvy travellers would know about.

It is not a place for those with a fear of heights. But don’t let this stop you. If you really can’t stomach ascending the Rock, stay around its base.

You can still take many mesmerising pictures and enjoy a great swim and snorkelling in the small 2 coves there that are some of the most  secluded beaches of Skopelos .

Energy Bonus - Why not visit Glossa?

It is the 2nd largest village of Skopelos Island after all. Giving it a miss would be a pity.

Glossa is perched on the highest hills, north-west of Skopelos. This naturally means that it is ‘exposed’ to some of the most mesmerising sunsets this island has to offer.

There is a strong feeling of nostalgia from bygone eras swivelling in the air. A certain curiosity towards visitors is everywhere you walk around Glossa. This sense emanates from the enchanting courtyards where the locals rest and sip their coffee. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

You're so close to Glossa village from this point

It’s only a few hundred meters after the Mamma Mia Chapel. Just take a right turn at the junction of the main road.

You can try parking on the small lot behind the first, big church you will encounter as you drive through.

It feels like time has stood still for this place. This feeling is the same every single time I visit my 3 good friends that own ‘Monogramma Bar’.

Walking on the cobblestone streets and through the many hills Glossa is built upon, is pure joy.

There is a strong feeling of nostalgia from bygone eras swivelling in the air. A certain curiosity towards visitors is everywhere you walk around Glossa. This sense emanates from the enchanting courtyards where the locals rest and sip their coffee.

This is where I go every time I get the feeling of wanting to get away from it all. Be a near-stranger among strangers.

Have a drink or two at my favourite Monogramma Bar and re-calibrate my life.

Day 5 - Conquering the mountains and diving to the seas of Skopelos Island

You happen to be in one of the most lovely areas of Skopelos.

It is a privilege to be able to experience both the deep blue seas and the lush forests of this island.

This is why our location makes it to the  Top 5 reasons to choose our Villas vs a Hotel for your holiday .

You’re very close to Skopelos Town, (7.5km), and in the valley of Mount Delfi. Home to one of the best attractions the area has to offer, the  Mystic Sendoukia graves .

A set of 3 Neolithic sarcophagi, dating back to at least 5th century BC. The sense of mysticism covers the entire slope of this place, and the good vibes can be felt no matter what time of day you go there.

The rewards of an early morning start

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary for Skopelos Island - Sendoukia Tombs with Guests

Try and reach the top of this peak by  6 am even if you’re not an early riser.

It’s the time of day when most of the positive energy sips out of every pore of this granite surface covering this area.

Aside from the energy that will be powering the rest of your day, you can also catch the sun rising from behind Alonnisos and the deserted south-east islands.

It is moments like these that stay engraved in our memories.

Witnessing the sun emerging with its splendid hues of orange, red and yellow. Breathing the aromas of thyme and oregano that surround the small granite crevices all around us.

Capturing these scenes in our camera is not often easy, as you can’t really capture the accompanying senses that create this surreal scene. So I wouldn’t lose out on the few precious moments of the sun rising in order to capture the perfect scene.

Witness the sunrise and allow a few minutes of solitude to pay your respects towards the ‘unseen’ Gods of the past creating this magic.

Go West or East?

You will have about a 15-minute descent back to where you left your car to decide about your next steps.

From here, you can drive west over the mountain and visit Kastani Beach, Milia or the beautiful Panormos bay.

It is also a great chance to visit Glysteri beach-LINK . A beautiful bay protected from the north-east winds by a well-hidden cove. It’s also the closest beach to Skopelos Country Villas.

Whichever way you decide to follow, it will be the perfect ending to a rejuvenating hike to the tombs of Sendoukia.

Day 6 - Exploring the South-West Corners of Skopelos Island

No visit to Skopelos would be complete without discovering the calm waters of the south-west.

Because of their closer proximity to Skopelos town, they tend to get a little busier during the high peak of the summer, (July and August). This shouldn’t stop you from exploring them, however.

Start driving down to Skopelos town and towards the port area. Instead of turning left to the port, continue driving straight at the last junction, (instead of turning left for the port).

There is a gas station in the corner of that junction too.

You’re now on your way towards Stafylos and Velanio Beach. The two beaches closest to Skopelos town. Just 4 km later on that same road, you will come upon the turning point where you head down left towards the parking area.

Do some walking for a stress-free experience during your holiday

I would advise you to park your car as high up on that small road as possible.

It’s only 500 meters from Stafylos beach, so it’s best to walk the rest of the way there.

You will thank me later when you see all the cars parked right and left along that road.

Enjoy the azure waters of Stafylos Beach and make sure you do some snorkelling along the beach.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island-Stafylos and Velanio Beaches

Walk to the end of the beach where you will find the small path that leads to Velanio Beach.

Due to the lack of proper road and easy access, it’s always quieter here.

The 2nd half of that beach is a well-known nudist retreat too. No matter which half you decide to dry off your bodies on, Velanio Beach remains one of the most exquisite beaches Skopelos Island has to offer.

Heading off to Agnondas and Limnonari Beaches

Continue driving past the Stafylos, and just 2 km later, you’ll arrive at the small bay of Agnondas.

You will usually find some hammocks lazily swaying under the shade of an olive tree, inviting you to be part of these ultimate, summer chill-out experiences. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

Known for its mesmerising sunsets, its idyllic landscape and the seafood tavernas.

There are 3 tavernas and a Cafe here offering the perfect setting for the ultimate Greek holiday memorable experience.

You can indulge in some great seafood, a dive in the green-blue waters, and watch the sunset.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary for Skopelos Island-Bay of Agnondas

Limnonari beach offers a similar experience. The beach here is bigger than Agnondas.

The waters here, often resemble those of a lagoon, due to the cove that protects them from the very occasional south wind.

The taverna may not be as close to the water as in Agnondas, but it offers a very relaxed and laid back atmosphere. The tables are spread around within the boundaries of a private olive grove.

You will usually find some hammocks lazily swaying under the shade of an olive tree. Inviting you to be part of these ultimate, summer chill-out experiences.

Day 7 - Catching up on missed opportunities - Allowing time

Trying to fit everything within a week, can be stressful during your holiday. I’m only suggesting  places I consider important for you to see while staying at Skopelos Country Villas.

This can be the day you can visit a beach or place you didn’t manage to fit in during your previous 6 days here.

If you managed to fit everything in and looking for something new to conquer, here are my next 2 tips:

Have you conquered the 'Top of the World' yet? Have you been to the highest peak of Skopelos Island?

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island-Observatory Views

It’s not the easiest to find so follow my instructions on ‘The Highest Peak of Skopelos and its Observatory’ and you’ll reach the top much faster.

It is a unique place. The kind that fulfils your sense of Achievement and leaves you with the most spectacular vista views. These pictures will occupy the best part of your cameras and your heart.

The best times to get there is either in the morning, (as early as you can), or just before sunset.

This way, you will allow for some time to have that last swim, or better yet, enjoy a Canoe paddling experience.

It is a great chance to paddle up to some otherwise, off-limit shores. Go through some beautiful rock tunnels and become one with the perfect-blue Aegean Sea.

Wrapping up the 'Perfect 7 Day Itinerary for Skopelos Island'

Deciding what to include or what to exclude from this short 7-day visit was not an easy task.

I tried to combine both spectacular beaches as well as mountains and other attractions.

The places listed here will provide you with different experiences and a more complete picture of what Skopelos Island has to offer.

Having you as our guests at Skopelos Country Villas means that your love for the outdoors is equal to that of being a beach lover.

In addition, the order of days and places to visit was no coincidence either. I tried to gradually introduce you to each place without having you ‘burn out’ early on in your week.

Are there more places to see in Skopelos?

There are more adventures to experience.

More shores to land on and hidden places to conquer.

But this is best left for a separate article geared towards a longer stay.

Skopelos Greece is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled, and green Greek islands, located in the Sporades archipelago, north of Athens. West of Skopelos lies cosmopolitan Skiathos Island and Pelion Peninsula, the two other filming locations of the famous Mamma Mia in Greece.

Skopelos Greece is ideal to spend peaceful, laid-back vacations on an island characterized by stunning secluded turquoise, azure, and bright blue beaches surrounded by deep pine forests. The island is perfect for families as it has excellent facilities and the beaches are mostly easy to get to.

Meryl Streep in Skopelos filming Mamma Mia

The sleepy island of Skopelos became suddenly famous when in 2007 they filmed the famous movie Mamma Mia I. Ever since Skopelos has been known as “The Mamma Mia Island” and is considered the sole location of the film.

However, the film is the result of a genius-crafted video editing of locations including Skopelos and Skiathos islands, Damouchari village in the nearby Pelion peninsula, and Pinewood Studios in the UK.

travel around skopelos

I have listed below the main shooting locations of Mamma Mia for you to visit when you are next to Skopelos Greece. And If you are a film fan, you can take a guided Skopelos Mamma Mia tour  to spend a day visiting all the film locations, with time for swimming!

The church of Agios Ioannis Kastri – The Wedding Scene

Impressive Agios Ioannis Kastri Church from a drone

30 km north of Skopelos Chora you will find the most impressive and beautiful landmark of Skopelos Greece, the lovely chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri.

Agios Ioannis (St. John the Baptist) stands on top of a rock where you can admire an amazing view of the coasts of Skopelos to Alonissos island.

The impressive rock is linked to the rest of the island through a narrow path with 110 steps carved into the stone but with steady handrails to support you. The interior of the church has beautiful icons and old ecclesiastical items to see.

travel around skopelos

The old stories about how Agios Ioannis Kastri was built, mention a fisherman from Glossa village, who while he was returning from fishing one night, saw a light on the top of the rock.

The same night he dreamt about a woman revealing to him that there was an icon on the top of the rock that he needed to retrieve. When he finally climbed to the top he discovered the image of St. John the Baptist and a church dedicated to the saint was built.

Sandy Agios Ioannis beach with beds and umbrellas, Skopelos Greece

A small but gorgeous sandy beach is formed right beneath the rock, a very popular spot during the high season. If you climb to the church during summer, take some water with you, a hat, and some sunscreen. The entrance is free, and modest dressing is advised.

Glysteri Beach

Mamma Mia Greece Locations, Glysteri beach, Skopelos Greece

Glysteri is an organized beach, inside a small protected bay, quite close to Skopelos Chora. It has small pebbles and the water is crystal clear, inviting you to jump into the sea as soon as you arrive at the beach.

In Mamma Mia film, this is where the arched stone entrance to Villa Donna was. Neither the entrance nor the villa exists on Skopelos as they were entirely filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK. The magnificent sea view, however, is of Glysteri Beach!

Kastani Beach

travel around skopelos

Kastani is a very beautiful sandy beach and appears quite a few times in the Mamma Mia film. The most characteristic scene is when Sophie with her fiancé Sky romps in the surf while singing ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’.

Kastani is located 15 km west of Skopelos Chora with easy asphalt access. The last 500 meters to the beach are on a dirt road, very easy to drive. There is parking for your car, a beach bar and you can rent beds and umbrellas to spend a full Mamma Mia Island beach day here!

Amarandos Cove

Amarandos Cove with 3 pine trees in Skopelos Greece

Amarandos is a stunning rocky cove laden with pine trees hanging over the sparkling blue water. This is where Sophie and her 3 dads sing together ‘Our last summer’.

There was a wildfire in the area in 2018 but the symbol of Amarandos, the three pines in the tiny peninsula, has miraculously survived!

Stay in Mamma Mia Film Crew Hotel

Mamma Mia Greece Locations, Skopelos seafront hotel

You can stay at Adrina Beach Hotel , a lovely 4-star hotel close to Panormos with its small beach, where the Mamma Mia 2 cast stayed to shoot the promotional videos. Or the nearby Adrina Resort & Spa , a gorgeous 5-star resort of the same family. Unfortunately, Mamma Mia 2 wasn’t filmed in Greece.

Stroll Skopelos Chora

Skopelos Greece main town with houses with tiled roofs

Skopelos Chora (the main town) is built amphitheatrically on a hill and is a beautiful picturesque town with small cobblestone alleys. It has been declared a protected traditional settlement, in a Venetian-like architecture, with balconies and terracotta roof tiles and it is mostly car-free.

Panagitsa of Pyrgos in Skopelos Greece

The port has numerous choices for coffee and taverns and this is the area where everybody will pass by at least once a day. At the end of the port, after you have climbed some steps, there is a lovely white church of Panagitsa of Pyrgos (Virgin Mary of the Tower). If you get in its yard, the view of the whole port of Skopelos is amazing.

Anatoli tavern in Skopelos Greece Castle

There are also the remains of a Venetian castle that you can hike (which can be quite demanding during summer heat) or you can drive up to a certain point. When you get to the top you will find Anatoli , a fantastic tavern where during summer you can enjoy live Greek traditional music (Rebetiko).

For a great introduction to Skopelos,  book this highlight tour with wine tasting and dinner!

Skopelos Greece Chora colorful alleys

Do not miss the Festival of Traditional Dances : For the 8th consecutive year, the traditional dance festival “Diamantis Palaeologos ” takes place in Skopelos Town usually in July.

Tips for Skopelos Chora:

  • Take the boat from Skopelos Chora port to the Marine Park of Alonissos , the largest seal Monachus Monachus protection area in Europe.

Where to Stay in Chora Skopelos

Thimisi Hotel terrace views of the sea in Skopelos Greece

Skopelos town is the most practical place to stay as this is the most central place on the island. However, the nearby beaches are not the best on Skopelos. Book in town if you are staying for a short time in Skopelos Greece:

4-star Thimisi Hotel is a charming boutique hotel, with fine decorations and excellent lovely views of the sea and the port from the terrace.

Irene’s Paradise is within walking distance of the town with lovely sea views and beautifully decorated rooms.

Dive to the Best Beaches in Skopelos

Skopelos is blessed with numerous gorgeous beaches, some of them organized with beach bars and lifeguards in the high season some more remote and not organized. All of them are with wonderful crystal clear waters surrounded by trees.

Milia beach

Milia Beach with turquoise waters in Skopelos Greece

Sandy, organized Milia is one of the most beautiful beaches in Skopelos Greece. It is also one of the largest, and most popular beaches on the island, ideal for families.

It is located 14 km southwest of Skopelos Chora, and right across from the Dassia islet which you can visit by boat. Some impressive rock formations on the beach split the beach in half and offer a great snorkeling field if you love exploring the sea.

Panormos Bay

Panormos pebbly beach Skopelos Greece

1 km south of Milia is the gorgeous Panormos beach with pebbles and waters that deepen quickly, so if you have small kids, keep that in mind. Panormos is a protected bay, surrounded by pine trees, with taverns and restaurants to go after your swimming.

Panormos is a great place to be based for your vacations in Skopelos and a great option there is Skopelos Sunset traditional country house .

Agnontas beach with fishing boats and taverns surrounded by forest in Skopelos Greece

Agnontas Beach is where you come to have the freshest fish on Skopelos. The area is named after the Ancient Olympic Games winner Agnontas, as an honor to their athlete who won in 596 BC in Olympia.

At its picturesque and sheltered bay, you will enjoy freshly caught seafood while admiring one of the best sunsets on the island. It has very easy access by road as it is only 8 km from Skopelos Chora.

A fab accommodation to stay in is Agnontas Luxury Villas !

travel around skopelos

Stafylos is another popular, sandy, and organized beach, 4 km south of Skopelos Chora. It is a protected green bay with a beach bar and lifeguard. It might be slightly tricky for some to get to the beach if you arrive there by bus as you have to walk a 500-meter downhill. In walking distance is the island nudist beach, Velanio.

Hike to Sentoukia

Sentoukia tombs in Skopelos Greece

If you love hiking to archaeological sites, Sentoukia is ideal for you!

You will need to drive to Karya mountain (660 meters peak), a lush pine forest 10 km northeast of Skopelos Chora to get to the start of the trail to Sentoukia.

The path starts inside the forest and is gently uphill, on an easy-to-follow trail. As you get higher the trees give way to bushes and as the slope faces the eastern part of Skopelos, you will be amazed if you get there for the sunrise. The higher you go the more you see of Alonissos island and you finally get to the Sentoukia or more precisely to the tombs !

There are four ancient tombs of the Roman or early Christian period carved inside the rocks. Three of the tombs are complete with 2.5 m covers of monolithic slabs and were found inverted. Sentoukia is a great place if you love endless sea vistas!

Discover the Skopelos Settlements

Neo Klima village with fishing boats in Skopelos Greece

Neo Klima is a lovely little village, recently founded, with a marina for fishing boats and yachts, with a specialty in fish soup, and lobster spaghetti in its taverns.

Hovolos turquoise beach.

Near Neo Klima is the fabulous Hovolos beach. To get to Hovolos you need to spot a large monolith, walk towards it – beware of any rock falling – and discover the beautiful hidden beach. It is an unorganized, quiet beach with very small pebbles and azure, crystal-clear waters.

Loutraki village.

The second port of Skopelos is officially called Glossa although if you see the map, Glossa is the village on the slopes of the mountain and the port village is called Loutraki. The confusing names have happened because years ago when Skopelos was far from a tourist destination, the tiny port was there just for Glossa village.

Tip: You may find interesting a visit to Antoniou Olive Oil Museum near Glossa.

Whitewashed houses in Glossa village.

Loutraki today is a beautiful village with a great choice of taverns and accommodations. Nearby you can also find two lovely beaches with pebbles, one of them with a few ruins from the archaeological site of ancient Selinous.

Visit Skopelos’ Byzantine Monasteries

Monastery surrounded by deep forest in Greece.

If you love religious art, Skopelos is your island as it has about 400 churches and 20 monasteries! Palouki Mountain, with a peak at 546 meters in the southeast of Skopelos, houses a string of 7 monasteries. This is also an ideal place for hiking and exploring the beautiful nature of the island.

Agia Varvara Monastery

Agia Varvara is the oldest Monastery on the island built in 1648, a large Basilica temple with a dome. The inside of the church is richly decorated with golden flowers and vine leaves and the outside is protected by high walls that protected it from any raids during the last centuries.

Other monasteries you can visit in the same area:

  • Evagelistria, Iera Moni Sotiros of the 16th century, Timios Prodromos, Agioi Taxiarches, Agia Anna, and Pano Panagia.
  • The monasteries accept visitors from 8.00-13.00 and 17.00-19:00.
  • There’s no entry charge but donations are appreciated. Alternatively, you can buy items in their shop.
  • Monastery dress code: women should wear long skirts (below their knees) and have their shoulders covered. Men should wear long trousers and have their shoulders covered.

Skiathos Greece beautiful town with toled roofs.

Skiathos is another Mamma Mia island, a gorgeous, vibrant place that you should visit. The island is between 1 to 1,5 hours away from Skopelos, depending on the vessel you will get.

What to do in Pelion Greece, over view of Milina village.

Since you are in the same part of Greece, it would be such a shame not to visit my favorite area, my beloved Pelion Greece , and discover another Mamma Mia location, Damouchari .

What best to do in Pelion Greece, Milina charming port.

Pelion, Greece, is a large, forested peninsula. On its gentle slopes lie some of the most beautiful traditional villages, boasting centuries-old houses and monasteries. Surrounded by the Aegean Sea, Pelion also boasts stunning beaches like Mylopotamos, Fakistra, Agios Ioannis, and Papa Nero.

Best Hotel in Pelion: Archontiko Sakali in Pinakates.

As mentioned before, Skopelos Chora is the most convenient area to stay with my favorite hotels being:

  • Thea Home Hotel (Budget)

How long to Stay on Skopelos

To enjoy Skopelos, I suggest spending 4-5 days seeing a good chunk of its incredible beaches and spectacular scenery. If you are visiting from Skiathos or Alonissos , you can see a lot on a day trip but I would suggest you stay overnight, it is such a beautiful island and needs more than a day trip to enjoy it.

How to Get Around Skopelos

You can get around Skopelos by using public buses , but there may only be a few buses per day, especially outside the high season, and on Sundays, there is a possibility that there are no buses at all. The bus station in Skopelos town (Chora) is right by the port where the ferries arrive and timings are listed on a noticeboard.

Taxis: Taxis are available in Skopelos Chora, Loutraki Port, and Neo Klima. Your hotel receptionist can usually book one for you, or you can keep the phone numbers of a few local taxi companies on hand. If you are going to use taxis a lot, it would be best, cost-wise, if you rented a car .

Where is Skopelos Located?

Alonissos beach of Agios Dimitrios with emerald waters.

Skopelos is the second-largest island of Northern or Thessalian Sporades, a group of islands in the Aegean Sea located north of Evia island and east of Thessaly where Pelion also belongs. There are 19 islands and islets included in the group of Northern Sporades with only 6 of them inhabited:

Skyros, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skiathos , Kyra Panagia, and Peristera.

All these islands are characterized by beautiful beaches with lush vegetation that often reaches the shores, in contrast to most other islands of the Aegean Sea, like the Cyclades , which tend to be barren.

How to Get to Skopelos Greece

Athens to skopelos.

If you are in Athens, the most scenic (and longer way) to get to Skopelos is with a private rental car . You can take the ferry to Skopelos from Volos, Agios Konstantinos, or Evia Island.

Flights to Skopelos

Skopelos has no airport but you can fly to Skiathos Island or Volos town in Pelion and take the ferry to Skopelos.

Ferries to Skopelos

You can take the ferry to Skopelos ports (to Skopelos Chora and Glossa) from several nearby ports (not from Athens though):

  • Volos port (324 km from Athens)
  • Evia Island (Mandoudi port, 133 km from Athens)
  • Agios Konstantinos port (mainland, 167 km from Athens)
  • Skiathos island
  • Alonissos island

Some of the routes are working only during summer. Check out routes, and timetables and book your seats with FerryScanner for the best deals!

Best Time to Visit Skopelos

The smaller Greek islands like Skopelos tend to have a shorter season for visitors than larger islands (such as Rhodes , Crete , or Corfu ) or the mainland such as the Peloponnese .

Generally speaking, Skopelos is at its liveliest between May and September, and in peak season from July to August, it can get very busy. The sea water is at its warmest (25-28 C) in August and September.

What to Wear in Skopelos

This depends on the season you are visiting but anytime between May and October, essential things to have in Greece are:

  • comfortable walking shoes as Greece is mountainous and archaeological sites with their marble floors can be slippery
  • organic sunscreen to apply as often as possible
  • UPF sun hat for all day out
  • women’s Tunic Swimsuit Cover-Up for the strong Greek sun
  • a CUPSHE Bikini for impressive beach appearances
  • cotton beach towels
  • and a beautiful dress for romantic nights in Greece

When is Best to Go to Greece

Greece has 4 distinct seasons with considerable temperature differences if you are in Thessaloniki in the north or Crete in the south. The islands never close, they have permanent residents but they are at their liveliest between May and September .

Skopelos Travel Guide

Skopelos may not have the spectacle of Santorini or ooze glamour like Mykonos , but it has a quiet confidence that gets under your skin. Silvery olive groves give way to sprawling vineyards and plum orchards, the bounty of which can be found on taverna menus across the island. Part of the Northern Sporades archipelago, this forested speck can only be reached by boat – but that’s part of its charm. It’s remote and peaceful, with a rugged beauty that caught the eye of the location manager for Mamma Mia , the 2008 film adaptation of the Abba musical. Here’s our comprehensive guide to Skopelos holidays .

Skopelos is one of the few Mediterranean destinations that doesn’t get too overcrowded in July and August, but if you want the island at its most quiet (but still balmy), visit in June or September.

How to get to Skopelos, Greece

Skopelos Travel Guide

It’s no mean feat getting to Skopelos, but its location does fend off the masses. The nearest airport is at overcrowded Skiathos (brace yourself: it’s one of Europe’s shortest runways), followed by an hour-long ferry ride to this unspoiled gem.

Otherwise, you can catch a ferry from Thessaloniki (3 hrs) or Athens’ port of Volos (via bus from the airport).

Skopelos, Greece

Picture-perfect towns

Skopelos may only be sprinkled with a handful of towns, but they more than make up for it in charm. Don’t miss Skopelos Town, a hillside sprawl of chalk-white houses and terracotta roofs, or Glossa, whose steep slopes are worth the slog for the fine views.

From breakfasts of Greek yoghurt and honey, to Kefalotyri goat-cheese pies for lunch and catch of the day for dinner – this Greek island draws on the natural larder of the island. To find the best restaurants in Skopelos, head uphill from the harbourfront of Skopelos Town to stumble across bougainvillea-draped tavernas; try Anna’s or Glifoneri. If you’re in Glossa, don’t miss Agnanti . Olive oil is the golden elixir of the island, with local producers like Antoniou Family Olive Press offering tours and tastings – one of our favourite things to do in Skopelos.

  Natural beauty

With its emerald-green forests and lapis lazuli waters, Skopelos has the subtle swagger of a film star. The beauty of it is that, despite Mamma Mia fame, the island hasn’t lost its authenticity. A far cry from overcrowded beaches and themed bars, it’s more about unspoilt island life – simple, rustic Greek food; quiet mountain walks; near-deserted beaches. It’s larger, but lesser visited than neighbouring Skiathos; its cragged scenery more pristine and less developed. This is one of those rare places you can unplug from modern life – it’s idyllic.

Skopelos is lined with picturesque sand-and-pebble beaches, backed by bottle-green hills. The most pristine stretches hug the western coast, although the southern counterparts tend to hog the attention. Kastani Beach Skopelos, of Mamma Mia fame, is one of the prettiest, while Armenopetra is just as breathtaking –without the crowds.

Hidden gems

Skopelos Travel Guide

Secluded spots

To escape the tourists at Kastani Beach, hire a motorboat in Panormos and head north to the stunning (and quiet) beaches of Hovolo, Ftelia or Neraki, accessible only by boat.

Eat like a local

While most of the best restaurants in Skopelos Town are away from the harbourfront, the exception is Molos in the Old Port – a favourite of in-the-know islanders.

Rooftop drinks

For drinks with a view, hotfoot it to the rooftop bar of Vrachos , shaded by gnarled olive trees and overlooking the port.

Things to do in Skopelos

Skopelos, Greece

Wander Skopelos Town’s labyrinth of cliff-clinging streets

The main port of Skopelos Town, on the southeast coast, is a beauty: a vertiginous jumble of bougainvillea-draped buildings with colourful shutters and terracotta roofs, crowned by a crumbling Venetian fortress. Climb the web of pedestrianised streets to discover tavernas spilling out onto jasmine-scented courtyards and tiny churches with chiming bells.

Experience authentic Greek island life in Glossa

In the far northwest of the island is Glossa, whose whitewashed houses hug even steeper streets. The pace slips down a few gears here: men play backgammon outside kafeneons and elderly women sweep the steps of their homes. A couple of dozy shops sell plums, almonds, oil and wine, closing in the heat of the day – the best time to climb the near-deserted streets to the town square – among the island’s finest viewpoints. Strolling this picturesque town where time appears to stand still is one of our favourite things to do in Skopelos .

Follow in the footsteps of Meryl Streep

Mamma Mia fans can take a self-guided tour of the film locations that thrust the island into the limelight – singing optional. First up, shimmy across the sands of Kastani Beach Skopelos – the setting for most of the dance scenes – before a cool drink at the beach bar. Next, head to the improbably located church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, perched atop a 100m-high rocky outcrop, where the wedding scene was shot. For both attractions, visit either early morning or evening to avoid the coachloads of tourists.

Hike the mountainous interior to magical monasteries

Skopelos is peppered with monasteries: tranquil havens with icon-adorned chapels and intricate altars. While you can loop around these ecclesiastical sites by car, scenic hiking trails connect some of the more off-grid places of worship. Set off on foot from the 16 th -century Sotiris monastery and join the T1 walking path, which weaves through the forest-pocketed mountains and offers dramatic views over the island of Alonnisos. You’ll end up at the abandoned monasteries of Taxiarches and Anna, partially shrouded by huge walnut trees.

Skopelos Greece – a guide to the Mamma Mia island

The unspoiled island of Skopelos Greece is known as the “Green and Blue” for its natural beauty, with mountain slopes clothed in pine forests rising from pebble beaches and turquoise water. There’s no shortage of things to do in Skopelos, it’s just that they favour the calmer pursuits of swimming, hiking, visiting monasteries and exploring the narrow cobbled streets of Skopelos town and Glossa.

24 islands make up the Sporades archipelago, but only Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos are inhabited. The tourist season here is short, from May to September. An international airport on neighbouring Skiathos contributes to its lively reputation, while Skopelos is more peaceful and laid back, perfect for those who want to relax in nature.

Skopelos – the Mamma Mia Island

The sleepy island of Skopelos was catapulted to fame when a film crew arrived in 2007 to shoot the hit movie Mamma Mia. Ever since, Skopelos has been known as “The Mamma Mia Island” a connection the locals are happy to re-live, since it’s so good for business!

In bars and restaurants, look out for photos of cast members dining out during their filming. Hear stories of what they got up to when many a glass of ouzo was enjoyed! Although interior scenes were shot in the Pinewood studio near London, most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in different locations around Skopelos.

The beaches at Kastani and Glysteri in Skopelos were used as film locations as well as the picturesque chapel of Agios Ioannis, perched on the top of a rock overlooking the sea. Some scenes were also filmed in nearby Skiathos and on the Pelion peninsula.

If you are a fan of the film, you can take a guided Mamma Mia tour to spend a day visiting the Mamma Mia film locations by coach, with time for swimming and a nice lunch by the sea.

10 fun Things to do in Skopelos

With no airport, Skopelos tends to be visited by independent travellers arriving by ferry and yachts sailing around the northern Sporades. The island’s all about nature, relaxation and people watching, with a gentle pace of life, but we still found plenty of fun things to do in Skopelos when we visited.

1. Wander through Skopelos Old Town (Chora)

Your first sight of Skopelos is likely to be Skopelos Town, also known by the locals as “Chora” which simply means “Town” in Greek. Arriving by ferry, you get a great view of the houses rising up from the port.

It’s built in the Venetian style, with balconies and terracotta roof tiles. Connecting them is a network of narrow stone paved paths, ideal for wandering on foot, but built with mules rather than cars in mind.

Luckily there’s a large, free car park on the harbour front where you can leave your hire car then dive into the alleyways to explore. You’ll find plenty of artisan and souvenir shops, pretty whitewashed houses and old churches full of frescoes and gold icons.

Along the harbour front are numerous bars and coffee shops, a place to people watch or wait until the ferry comes in, disgorging new arrivals laden down with backpacks and suitcases.

A walk along the harbour in Chora

Walk further along past all the tour boats waiting to take you on a trip to the Marine park of Alonissos. Beyond the pretty fishing boats, climb the steps to the Church of the Virgin Mary at the furthest end of the harbour. Continue uphill past two more small churches and you’ll arrive at the ruins of the Venetian Castle.

From here there are great views over the town, with a cafe to sit at the top and admire them. Skopelos town is a good place to shop for holiday essentials, with plenty of food shops and the best choice of restaurants, as well as the place for any practical matters like car or cycle hire.

2. Hike up to the monasteries

On the pine clad eastern side of the island are a string of monasteries which you can visit by car or hike to as we did. From the eastern end of the port, a marked footpath leads up the slopes of Mount Palouki, skirting villas, crossing the winding road and leading through forest until you arrive at the 16th century Monastery of Iera Moni Sotiros.

Iera Moni Sotiros Monastery, Skopelos Greece

The Monasteries tend to open for visitors in the morning until around 1pm and then open again in the evening 5pm to 8pm. You may find them closed for sightseeing during Sunday services. There’s no entry charge but donations are appreciated, or you can make a small purchase of soap, postcards or religious items in their shop.

Iera Moni Sotiros Monastery, Skopelos Greece

Monastery dress code

The monastery dress code is for both men and women to cover their shoulders, and ideally their knees. Visitors wearing shorts or revealing clothing is considered disrespectful.

You may want to pack a wrap as I did (see my photos modelling the look!) to make an impromptu skirt or shoulder covering. Photos within the monastery walls and especially within the church may not be allowed, hence my photos were taken from the entrance.

Check out our guide to Pelion Greece – from the mountains to the sea!

Monastery of Timios Prodromos, Skopelos Greece

The Sotiros monastery has a pretty, flower filled courtyard and a beautiful old church where we made a donation and left a candle to be lit during the service. The path continued up the hill, flattening out near the convent of Agia Varvara which was closed, but we stopped to admire the mules grazing and rested on a handy picnic bench.

Monastery of Timios Prodromos

Not much further was the Monastery of Timios Prodromos, with an open outer courtyard and a small church within the walls. The monk offered us a Loukoumi sweet in welcome and again we made some purchases of local soap from their shop.

It was a very enjoyable hike, which took us a few hours. We could have continued to see the Vizantino monastery further along the trail, but decided that any more walking in the heat of the day would be too much.

3. Have lunch in the cute fishing port of Agnontas

From Skopelos town, it’s a short drive to the south side of the island and the pretty fishing port of Agnontas. This is the ideal place to come for a long, lazy lunch followed by a swim. There are a couple of fish tavernas on the sea front and small beach for swimming.

We walked right along the long pier where there were numerous yachts moored up, a favourite with sailors visiting the North Sporades archipelago.

If you continue along the small road at the end of town that follows the coastline, there are numerous rocky swimming spots along the Amarandos Cape.

Two pines sitting on top of a rocky outcrop with a turquoise inlets below, make one of the most photographed shots of Skopelos, a location used in the Mamma Mia film when Sophie spends an afternoon sailing with her three fathers.

In the opposite direction a small coastal road takes you around the cliff to the beautiful and popular beach at Limnonari where there are two more beach tavernas and plenty of sun beds.

4. Visit some of the gorgeous Skopelos beaches

Skopelos is blessed with numerous gorgeous beaches and swimming spots, where the water is clear and clean and there are lifeguards in high season. We were staying close to Panormos beach, one of the best beaches in Skopelos, with a long stretch of pebble beach.

Here you’ll find a wide range of tavernas and beach bars although none of them seems to dominate the beach and there is plenty of space for everyone.

Panormos Beach, Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Most of the beaches in Skopelos are small pebbles rather than soft sand, so it’s a good idea to pack your swimming shoes to save your feet from the “ouch” factor. Just up the coast from Panormos are the pretty beaches of Milia and Kastani, the latter much visited since several scenes from Mamma Mia were filmed here.

Our other favourite beaches were the the sheltered coves of Limnonari and Stafylos on the south coast. We also enjoyed Glysteri on the north coast which is closest to Skopelos town and the small but pretty Agios Ioannis beach, set below the Mamma Mia chapel.

5. Visit the Mama Mia chapel and beaches

Ever since Skopelos was used in 2007 as the main location for the hit film Mamma Mia, people have been flocking to re-live the Greek island fantasy and sing along to those catchy Abba songs. Many of the interior scenes were shot at the Pinewood Studios near London, but you can also visit several gorgeous beach locations in Skopelos. Especially well known is the chapel of Agios Ioannis that featured in Sky and Sophie’s wedding.

Agios Ioannis Mama Mia church Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Perched on top of a rock, the climb up the 202 steps to the tiny chapel rewards you with views over the stunning rocky coastline and beach below. Due to the miniature size, a much larger version of the chapel interior was built in the Pinewood Studios to use for the wedding scene.

Agios Ioannis Mama Mia chapel, Skopelos Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Parking is at the bottom of the hill along the road in front of the beach cafe. In high season and at weekends there may be crowds and no room to park, so time your visit accordingly. The cafe also serves food and drinks on the beach and runs the beach beds and umbrellas that you can rent. There’s also a small shop nearby called Sporades cosmetics that sells natural beauty products.

After climbing up to the chapel (it’s free but donations are appreciated) you can walk down to the beach and cool off in the clear turquoise waters. Other beaches that were used as film locations for Mamma Mia were Kastani and Glysteri, and you can take a Mamma Mia tour to get all the best stories from the filming.

6. Visit pretty Glossa and Loutraki sea port

Glossa is the second largest town on Skopelos, situated on the north east coast on the hillside above the seaport of Loutraki, which is an alternative stop for the ferries. It’s a charming place to visit for a few hours, all narrow winding streets, pretty traditional houses and flashes of colour in the painted shutters and bougainvillea.

Glossa Skopelos Greece

Don’t attempt to take your car into or through the town, whatever Google Maps may tell you! Parking is limited, but there’s a small parking area at the church as you come into town. Alternatively, most people seemed to park on the main road just below the town that leads down the hill to Loutraki, then walk up into Glossa.

A visit here is all about soaking up the atmosphere, or exploring the pretty streets with glimpses of the sea. You can stop for a coffee or have lunch at one of the cafes and restaurants.

Glossa Skopelos Greece

We ate at the “Platea” taverna in the main square next to the church, which had some tasty traditional dishes and you can also visit the church if it’s open. Restaurant Agnanti in Glossa has an excellent reputation and stunning views from its terrace, serving Greek cuisine with a modern twist, a great place for something a bit more special.

Glossa Skopelos Greece

Visit Loutraki sea port

Combine your visit to Glossa with a stop at Loutraki, the sea port that sits below it. You might want to avoid the times when the ferry is due to call as it will then be quite busy. At other times it’s a sleepy little place with a pretty harbour and a couple of tavernas where you can have a coffee or nice lunch.

Glossa Skopelos Greece

Until the mid 20th century Loutraki was a major centre for wooden boatbuilding. The boatyards have now closed and the harbour is used as a safe haven for sailing boats.

Another point of interest is that this was the site of the Ancient Greek and Roman city of Selinous. We saw signs pointing to the site of the archaeological remains and Roman Baths although didn’t manage to find them.

If you want to take a swim, follow the Roman Bath signs past the stylish Natura Hotel on the seafront past the harbour. You’ll find a small rocky beach and swimming place beyond.

7. Hike up to the pirate graves of Sentoukia

We always like to incorporate some walking in our trips. An easy but memorable hike in Skopelos was to the ancient tombs at Sentoukia on Mount Karia. They are locally known as the “Pirate Graves.” Stories are told about the pirates who used to attack and plunder these islands being buried here along with their treasure.

Sentoukia Pirate graves, Skopelos Greece

The reality is that very little seems to be known about these tombs. They were cut into the bedrock and topped with enormous stones that have been pulled back by grave robbers.

My guess is that the stories of pirate ghosts watching over their treasure is a bit of local folklore that’s been embroidered for the tourists. I think in reality these graves were the family tombs of a local leader in prehistoric times.

Sentoukia Pirate graves, Skopelos Greece

Were there really pirates?

There are 3 complete tombs next to each other and a fourth that is started but not completed. Imagine the work required to cut the tombs by hand from the rock. Not to mention cutting and transporting the enormous stone slabs covering the graves!

Set on the top of the hill, with a view over the sea, these must have been the tombs of someone very important indeed! Sadly the contents of the graves have long since disappeared and the pirate story seems to be the only thing that remains.

Sentoukia Pirate graves, Skopelos Greece

It’s not difficult to find the tombs, which we located on Google Maps. We parked just off the main road where a gravel track continues up to a quarry area.

Not knowing if it was suitable for cars, we decided to walk up this dirt track. But, it would be possible to drive up it and park near a roadsign marked “Sendoukia”, which directs you onto a walking path.

We followed the walking track which was marked by occasional arrows and red dots of paint. Eventually we found the tombs. We sat there a while to drink in the views, before returning the same way. On a sunny day it would be a great place for a picnic, as you can see right across to the island of Alonissos.

8. Take a Boat trip to Alonissos

From Skopelos town, it’s a short boat trip across to the neighbouring island of Alonissos. There’s a National marine park surrounding the island encompassing the smaller uninhabited islands nearby. If you are interested, most of the tour boats line up along the harbour front in Skopelos town with information about the tours on offer.

Sadly we didn’t have time to take any of these boat trips during our visit. Nature lovers will enjoy spotting the Mediterranean monk seals, dolphins and sea birds. There’s also a chance for snorkelling and swimming in the clear waters.

Stayflos Beach, Skopelos, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

9. Shop for authentic Skopelos souvenirs

The best place for shopping on this small island is Skopelos Town. You’ll find a good range of souvenir shops along the harbour front and in the alley ways that lead up the hill behind the cafes. It’s a fun place to explore on foot and browse in the cute gift shops for authentic gifts. In particular look out for:

– Stylish Greek style summer dresses, tops and beachwear. Wait until you arrive to buy that floaty beach wrap for your holiday!

– Colourful Greek ceramics at the Armoloi shop on the harbour front and many other shops.

– Local honey, sweet fruit preserves and honey drenched almond cakes that are traditional to the island. Also look out for the dried prunes that Skopelos is famous for growing.

– Pretty jewellery, from gold and silver with precious stones to fun and inexpensive pieces that will help you re-live that Greek summer vibe long after you get home.

– Crafts and artworks by Greek artists from Skopelos and other parts of Greece at Archipeligos . Worth a look just to see inside the beautiful old traditional house that’s one of the oldest shops in town.

– Local olive oil – you can also visit the Antoniou Family Olive Oil museum and olive mill just outside Glossa for a tasting.

– Guide books, photography books and stationary at the cute Juices and Books on the western end of the harbour front.

10. Taste the delicious food in Skopelos

The food in Skopelos is typical of the Greek Islands with plenty of traditional dishes, seafood and a few local specialties thrown in. Of course in most tavernas you can try the typical Greek dishes like moussaka, beef stifado, tomatoes stuffed with herby rice. Or, stick to a traditional Greek salad topped with feta cheese.

When eating by a beach or port, fish and seafood is often a specialty. You can choose from a selection of fresh, locally caught fish which is priced by the kilo. Or, explore other seafood favourites like stuffed squid, grilled sardines, octopus rings and lobster spaghetti.

In the past Skopelos was famous for its plums which would be dried to make prunes and exported all over the world. You can still see them in local delicatessens and on restaurant menus. They may be served in a dish of pork or rabbit, slow roasted with prunes.

Local honey is widely available and used to drizzle on deserts or drench almond cakes. Local fruits are preserved in syrup to make the “sweet spoon” that is offered to guests when they visit a home in the afternoon.

Another notable specialty of Skopelos is the Strifti pie, coiled into a spiral. With a filling of goats cheese or spinach and deep fried, it’s a variation on the traditional Tiropita cheese pie.

Also worth a visit when you’re in Glossa is the Antoniou Family Olive Oil museum and olive mill on the outskirts of town. Here you can taste and buy their cold pressed olive oil made from the local fruit.

Restaurants in Skopelos

You’ll find the widest range of restaurants in Skopelos town. While the harbour front cafes are great for people watching, you may find better and more local food in the lanes and small squares behind the seafront. A few places that we enjoyed eating or can recommend around Skopelos include:

Stuffed tomatoes, Skopelos Greece

Restaurants in Skopelos Town

Skopelos town – The Platanos taverna that’s in square (Plateia) set back from the port on Doulidou . There’s tables under the shady plane tree, serving traditional Greek dishes.

Skopelos town – Kochilis bakery right on the harbour front street corner. It has a wide selection of pastries, sandwiches and some nice food souvenirs if you are waiting for the ferry.

Skopelos town – Barramares is a cafe specialising in deserts on the harbour front. Their kiosk sells ice creams to take away with lots of very moreish flavours.

Skopelos town – Cafe Thalassa is a tiny cafe with tables set out in summer in the pretty square above the church of the Virgin Mary. They serve lovely fresh juices and smoothies which you can drink with an idyllic view of the sea.

Cocktails at Kraken, Panormos Beach, Skopelos Greece

Restaurants in Panormos

Panormos – Try the sunset cocktails at Kraken , a trendy modern beach bar that’s open all day serving sun beds on the beach. It’s a great spot for drinks before heading to dinner at one of the beach tavernas.

Panormos – We literally ate at the water’s edge in the family run Linarakia restaurant, with a great range of seafood and other traditional dishes. I celebrated my birthday there and it’s ideal for a special dinner for couples, families or larger groups.

Street food at Skopelos Experience, Skopelos Greece

Panormos – Beside the road that leads to Panormos beach from the Skopelos Town direction, we stopped at Skopelos Experience . This food truck is set in gardens and farmland and serves gourmet street food. It was a cool and shady place to relax and see their farm animals and veg garden. On offer are healthy falafels and salads with lots of veggie options.

Restaurants elsewhere in Skopelos

Glossa – We tried the friendly Plateia Taverna for lunch in the main square by the church in Glossa, with a good range of home cooked and traditional Greek dishes. Although we didn’t eat there, we also heard good things about Agnanti in Glossa, with a lovely terrace and a gourmet reputation.

Agnontas – Both the seafront tavernas in this pretty port have a great reputation for seafood. Mouria looking a bit more traditional, while Korali looks a more modern and stylish. This is a favourite spot for lazy lunches at weekends and very busy in the holiday season.

Where to stay in Skopelos

Skopelos is a small island, so wherever you stay it’s easy to get around, especially if you hire a car. There are several beautiful beaches with good road links, tavernas and a range of accommodation options. Alternatively you could choose to stay in Skopelos town with its lively harbour front, then use it as a base to visit different beaches and other attractions.

Stay at Panormos Beach

We chose to stay at Panormos, which has one of the best beaches in Skopelos with a wide selection of beach bars and tavernas. We were really happy with our choice. Panormos offered wonderful swimming, a well stocked local shop, plenty of eating out options and easy proximity to Skopelos town. Check prices and book accommodation in Panormos .

In particular I’d recommend;

Katerina Apartments – a great budget option where we stayed. It’s set down a lane a short walk from the beach, in a quiet location with beautiful gardens.

There are several different sized studios and apartments with small kitchens and pretty balconies or terraces to sit outside. We enjoyed being among nature, while a 5 minute walk past olive groves and plum trees took us to the beach for our daily swim.

Stay in Skopelos Town

Many visitors choose to stay in the charming Skopelos town (Chora) which has a wide range of accommodation. You’ll find mainstream hotels to pretty apartments and studios in the narrow streets of the old town.

There is a small town beach but it’s nothing compared to the lovely beaches in other parts of the island. You will probably need to drive or take a bus to explore the island if staying in Skopelos town.

If you like to stay in a resort style hotel with pools and easy parking, there’s a cluster of them on the eastern edge of town. If you want more local experience, search for an apartment in the maze of streets on the western edge of town, set under the Venetian castle and church of St Mary the Virgin.

Skopelos Village Hote l – This mid range hotel is probably the best of the resort style hotels in Skopelos town. It offers 48 rooms and family suites, with whitewashed accommodation buildings set around gardens and pool. It’s on the seafront with nicely decorated rooms in pastel shades and its own restaurant.

Stay at Neo Klima

Neo Klima on the south coast of Skopelos is a small town and resort, with a pretty marina where you can book a boat trip. There’s a couple of long beaches and plenty of accommodation options, mainly studios and villas.

This is a good alternative on the south coast to Panormos. It has easy access by car to Skopelos Town, Glossa and the other south coast beaches such as Milia and Kastani.

Stay in Stafylos

Stay in Glossa and Loutraki

I probably wouldn’t stay in Glossa itself as the narrow streets have no space for parking a car and it’s easier to visit it for a couple of hours. However, you could stay just below the town by the sea at Loutraki.

Here there is a stylish boutique hotel and a range of holiday apartments and studios. There’s also a few tavernas and easy access to the ferry which regularly arrives in the port.

Best time to visit Skopelos

The smaller Greek islands like Skopelos tend to have a shorter season for visitors than larger islands or the mainland. Most places will be open for tourists from May to September.

In May the temperatures are warming up to around 20 degrees Celsius rising to 30 degrees Celsius and above in July and August. May and September / October are good times to visit for cooler temperatures, walking and outdoor activities. The summer months of July and August are great for beach weather.

Skopelos Greece, Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Late July and August is peak season when the Greeks head to the islands. At this time everything tends to be much busier and more booked up.

If you visit outside the main season of May to September, you may get beautiful weather, but it’s less predictable. Some restaurants, accommodation and services may not be open. The choice of flights, ferries and buses is also likely to be less.

We visited in June and found the perfect balance of good weather, everything open but not too many crowds.

How to get to Skopelos

Airport links for skopelos.

There is no airport on the island of Skopelos itself. The closest international airport is on the neighbouring island of Skiathos, which serves the island group of the Northern Sporades.

From Skiathos it’s a 1 hour ferry ride across to Skopelos. An alternative airport is Volos , which is mainly used for summer charter flights. From Volos there are a regular ferries to Skopelos that take between 2 and 4 hours.

Skopelos town Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Other major international airports to use are Thessaloniki or Athens. Then you would need to travel by bus or train to Volos and then take the ferry.

An alternative would be to fly to Athens and then take an internal flight to Skiathos and then a ferry to Skopelos. If travelling via Volos I’d recommend you break your journey here and see a bit of the city. Read my guide to all the things to do in Volos .

Ferry to Skopelos

Due to there being no airport on Skopelos, you’ll need to reach Skopelos by ferry. Embark from Volos, Thessaloniki or from Skiathos, depending on which airport you fly into. Ferries between Volos and the Sporades islands are operated by Hellenic Seaways, Anes Ferries , Blue Star Ferries and Aegean Flying Dolphins .

It’s worth comparing the different operators as they vary in price and journey time. Ferries from Thessaloniki are with Sea Jets . The cost of a 1 way journey from Volos to Skopelos ranges between around €20 and €40. From Skiathos to Skopelos cost is between around €10 to €16. You can check prices for all the ferry companies here .

Ferry to Skopelos Greece

The ferry time between Volos and Skopelos ranges from 2 hours with the Flying Dolphins hydrofoil to 4.5 hours with Hellenic, Anes or Blue Star Ferries.

From Skiathos to Skopelos is 30 mins – 1 hr journey time. Most of the ferries make a loop from Volos, stopping at Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos in turn.

On Skopelos they often make 2 stops at Glossa Skopelos, the smaller port on the west side of the island and then the main port of Skopelos (Chora).

Unless your accommodation is very close to Glossa, I’d recommend arriving in the main port of Skopelos. It has good bus links and is where most of the car hire offices are based. You can check prices for all the ferry companies here .

Getting around Skopelos

Car hire on skopelos.

If want to see the maximum during your stay on Skopelos, I’d recommend hiring a car. We find that on the Greek islands car hire prices can be very reasonable outside high season. However, in July and August it may cost more as this is the peak season with limited supply of cars to hire.

Having a hire car means that you can easily visit all the best beaches and do some interesting hikes. You’ll generally get to parts of the island that the buses don’t reach.

As Skopelos is only 17 km long and can be driven from end to end in an hour or two, the driving is easy and pleasant here. Compare prices for car hire in Skopelos .

Goats on the road in Skopelos Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

There are a number of car hire offices located within a short walk of Skopelos (Chora) port. For prebooked cars you will often be met where the ferry docks. You’re then driven the short distance to the office to complete the paperwork. Get the best price with prebooking online , as you can compare all the providers.

Be sure to look at customer reviews and rating scores as well as price before you make a final choice. We used Green Motion on Skopelos, who have an office in the port and were very happy with their service. Compare prices for car hire in Skopelos .

Buses on Skopelos

If you are looking for a relaxing break, with just the occasional excursions then you will find the buses on Skopelos are reliable. Use them to go to most of the popular beaches and villages.

This will be a much cheaper option than hiring a car, but you need to work your timings around the bus schedule. There may only be a few buses per day, especially outside high season.

Skopelos Town, Greece Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Many of the buses start and end in Skopelos. This could be a good place to base yourself if you plan to make a lot of journeys by bus. The bus station in Skopelos town (Chora) is right by the port where the ferries arrive. Timings are listed on a noticeboard.

4 different bus routes run with stops at Stafilos, Agnontas, Panormos, Milia, Kastani, Neo Klima, Glossa and Loutraki. If taking the bus to the beach, the bus may drop you a short walk from the beach, depending on the road access. A one way bus journey is typically between €2 and €4.

travel around skopelos

Taxis on Skopelos

Taxis may be useful for the occasional journey when the buses are not running. These will get you home late at night or to more out of the way places. However the cost of taxis can add up, so if you make a lot of trips you’d probably be better hiring a car.

There are taxi ranks in Skopelos town (Chora), Loutraki port and Neo Klima. Otherwise, ask your restaurant or hotel to call you a taxi. Taxi meters are not used but instead there is a set rate for each journey. Check with the taxi driver on the cost before you start.

Bike hire on Skopelos

If you’d like to explore the island by bike, check out Skopelos Cycling in Skopelos Town (Chora) near the post office. You can hire a bike from them and they also run cycling tours of Skopelos.

Hmmmm nice effort but there's so much stuff that is copied from other blogs, sadly. Just so you know, Syros is not in Soorades, just the basics done right (Geography 101).

@Tony Thanks for the comment, actually this article is all my own work and I visited all the places mentioned. I never copy from other blogs although I may refer to multiple sources when writing articles, to check my facts. I've corrected the Syros mention.

Monday 7th of March 2022

This is a fantastic blog, thank you Heather!

I am currently planning an extended trip this year, and was planning on spending October (ish) through Greece and the outer islands. Would you suggest I will run into too many blocks being outside of peak?

Thanks Jemma

@Jenny The issue you have when travelling late season is that the weather is cooling down and things are starting to close, so you may not get the typical 'Greek Island' experience. It's fine if you like walking and activities as the weather is generally sunny especially at the beginning of October but you may want to choose islands that are further south or those that have more 'sightseeing' and culture - or combine some of the islands with a trip to cities like Athens, Volos or Thessalonika that have more to do.

 Where is Skopelos?

Skopelos is part of the northern Sporades Islands in the Aegean Sea. These are located just off the east coast of Greece north of the island of Evia (Euboea) – the second biggest Greek island after Crete.

Skopelos is larger in size than both Santorini and Mykonos with an area of 96 square kilometres (37 square miles). The nearest islands with any sizable population are Skiathos to the west and Alonissos to the east.

When to visit Skopelos

Tourist season in the Greek Islands runs between May all the way through early November. Visitor numbers peak in the summer months which is considered high season for the island.

Like many of the Greek islands, Skopelos has a Mediterranean climate. This makes summer the best time to visit.

Warm weather is to be expected between June and September with the hottest month of the year being July. Temperatures can reach highs of 32°C and lows of 21°C.

If you are looking for a beach break, visiting any time in summer should give you sunny days and a low chance of rain.

The shoulder months of May and October may be the best time to visit Skopelos if you want fewer crowds and cheaper prices. You will still experience pleasant weather but without hordes of tourists.

How to get to Skopelos

As with many of the Greek islands, getting to Skopelos means getting there by boat.

Ferries connect up with the island’s main port (also called Skopelos), but there are three ports in total on the island.

There are a variety of different types of ferries. Some of these are for foot passengers only while others take cars in addition.

Getting there from the mainland can be achieved by ferry via a couple of routes. Firstly, you could opt to take the ferry from Agios Konstantinos in central Greece (three hours) as there is no ferry to Skopelos from Athens.

Another option is to board the ferry that departs from Volos in Thessaly. This route takes two hours.

And a further option again (and how I did it) is to fly to the neighbouring island of Skiathos (see below) and ferry from there, which takes around an hour.

If you are arriving in Athens the best option is to take the bus from the capital to Agios Konstantinos, which takes two hours. After that you simply hop on the ferry.

There are also ferry connections that connect Skopelos with nearby islands including Skyros, Alonissos, and Evia. These inter-island ferries are more frequent in the summer months, which is yet another reason to visit in summer rather than winter.

Flying to Skopelos

Skopelos has no airport so if you were thinking of catching a flight there, you’ll have to reconsider.

The closest airport is on the nearby Skiathos island. Domestic flights connect Skiathos with Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as destinations around Europe in the summer months.

From Skiathos, you can then take one of the daily ferry connections to Skopelos (around one hour).

 Getting around Skopelos

A good way to get around Skopelos is by using its bus network . The KTEL buses work well if you want to explore the island and visit some of the more popular beaches and villages. Most of the buses start and end in Skopelos town. There are four different bus routes costing between €2 and €4.

There are taxi ranks in the main towns on Skopelos and they are good for getting around after you have been out for the evening. Note that these do not use the meter and have an established rate for journeys, although this can be somewhat expensive. Be sure to ask first.

Car/scooter rental

The best way to get around is by hiring your own set of wheels. Car hire can be reasonable especially out of high season. If you are visiting in the height of summer, then you might want to book ahead.

Skopelos Accommodation

There are three main towns & villages that are popular bases for those who are visiting Skopelos.

The main one is Skopelos town . This is the main port and capital of the island and is a protected Heritage site. It’s a pretty town with beautiful, white-washed buildings and colourful wooden shutters. There’s even a 13th-century castle here.

Some of the nicest accommodations here are self-catering options overlooking the sea such as Aeolos Hotel . There is also the charming Denise Hotel and beautiful Olia Green , a boutique luxury hotel with stunning waterfront rooms.

For something truly special , romantic and secluded check out Christine’s House up in the hills with its chic luxe styling and private pool. Or, high on the hill in Skopelos Town there are Villea Seaview Apartments , three utterly charming little houses that are right out of a postcard. Great value and excellent service by the wonderful host as well.

If you are travelling as a family or group check out Artemis Garden on the outskirts of town who have a gorgeous 2 and 3 bedroom villa set amongst a stunning tranquil garden. Another excellent option is Thimisi House , a stunning renovated house in the heart of Skopelos Town which can sleep up to 7 people in 3 bedrooms.

Budget travellers would be hard-pressed to beat Thea Home Hotel or Pansion Prodromina for both ambience and amenities or Achinos one-bedroom Guest House if you want something fully self-contained and very private.

Another place to stay on Skopelos is Skopelos Glossa – it is the second largest town and is located 25 kilometres from the capital. It is a sloping village with white-washed houses and views out over the sea. The ferry port here makes it a good place to stay if you want to explore nearby islands too. Here we are big fans of Aegean Wave and Natura Luxury Boutique Hotels.

The third option is Neo Klima . This resort village is located 19 kilometres to the west of the capital and has lots of local tavernas and shops as well as a good beach for swimming and sun-bathing. Check out Anna Marie-Vanessa Apartments right on the waterfront and Elios 2- bedroom villas in the hills above.

Or, for the full resort experience Adrina Beach Hotel , just outside Panormos, is located right on one of the best beaches on the island and has some of the best reviews in Greece!

Skopelos restaurants and food

Food to try.

There are many traditional Greek dishes to expect on the island of Skopelos. When dining in local tavernas, you can enjoy classics such as stuffed tomatoes , moussaka , Greek salad and beef stifado .

One local speciality that you should try is strifti pie – a mouthwatering goat’s cheese and spinach pastry that is deep-fried. Like most of the Greek Islands ( actually all of them!) Seafood plays a big part in the cuisine of Skopelos especially when you’re eating near a beach or port. Fish is locally caught, and popular dishes include grilled sardines , stuffed squid and lobster .

Plums are a favourite and are grown widely on the island. They often come served with meat such as pork or rabbit and can be used on desserts. Local honey and fruits are also a must-try.

Skopelos tavernas, bars and cafes

You are in for a treat when you are dining out on Skopelos. There is a big selection of local tavernas and eateries situated in cobbled lanes and right by the sea.

Recommended restaurants include the famous Agnanti in Glossa, which has been a favourite and landmark eatery since it opened its doors in 1958. Stou Dimitraki enjoys a similar reputation in Skopelos Town.

Zoupa in Skopelos town is a romantic spot in an oasis courtyard that provides meals made with local produce as does very charming Olivo. Azan is the new kid on the block and has been causing quite a stir since opening.

It’s worth a trip up the hill in Skopelos Town to visit Peparithos with its sweeping views and beautiful garden and similarly Η Πλατεία in Neo Klima for its authentic Barbeque.

For somewhere to eat with ocean views nothing beats The Muses , also located in Skopelos town or Nikos Taverna in Panormos or Korali Seafood Restaurant on Agnontas Beach (see photo below).

In terms of Bars Vrachos All Day Bar on the harbour in Skopelos Town is the place to be or Mercurius Cocktail Bar for a late-night tipple.

There are numerous tavernas on the beaches that have sunbeds and umbrellas including Apanemo Beach Bar on Limnonari Beach, Milia Beach Bar on Milia Beach and popular Kastani Beach Bar on Kastani Beach which has lots of shade and plenty of sunbeds.

Things to do on Skopelos

Skopelos beaches.

The beaches in the Sporades Islands are generally very good and Skopelos is no exception. With forests of trees hanging right down to the crystal clear water the conditions are excellent for a very laid back Greek beach vacation.

Stafilos Beach is five kilometres from Skopelos town. It is a large pebble beach in a curving bay that is lapped by sparkling waters. Here, you can find a taverna for a lazy lunch and a beach bar for drinks and snacks.

The main beach in Skopelos town is also a good option. It is close to accommodation and eateries, but so-called Town Beach is not the most beautiful beach on the island. There are some ruins of a temple nearby for something to add to this beach outing.

Hovolo Beach is one of the most picture-perfect beaches on the island. Much of the natural environment here is unspoilt, so don’t come here expecting water sports or many facilities. Instead, you can enjoy rocks and interesting coves for snorkeling and exploring.

Twelve kilometers from Skopelos town you will find Panormos Beach . It is an attractive spot with great facilities that makes it perfect for spending a long day by the sea.

Neo Klima’s Elios Beach is a pleasant place for soaking up some sun. It has amenities such as showers and tavernas. This part of the island’s coastline is linked to its patron saint, Riginos.

One of the most popular things to do on Skopelos in recent years is the Mama Mia Island Tour . This will take you to the beautiful little Church where the wedding took place as well as other spots of interest used in the film.

Monuments of Skopelos

Skopelos Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri (Chapel of St.John)

Currently the most famous landmark on Skopelos, this lovely church is located seven kilometers to the north of Glossa. It was here that some scenes from the movie Mamma Mia were filmed. It is a particularly pretty church that sits up high on rocks and overlooks the island’s coastline.

Monastery of Evangelistria

You will find this important monument just outside of Skopelos town. It sits on the slopes of Mount Palouki and was originally constructed in 1712. The monastery is home to valuable religious icons from the Byzantine era and the internal dome is covered in Gold Leaf. The views are also quite stunning.

Venetian Castle

The Venetians were one of the many civilizations that laid claim to the island of Skopelos through the ages. One remnant of their rule can be found in the island’s main town. Getting to the castle is part of the fun as it involves walking through winding streets up to the high fortress.

Sentoukia pirate graveyard

Though this sight is more off the beaten track it is still an interesting thing to discover while staying on Skopelos. Centuries ago, pirates would plunder the island and others in the area and these tombs have been connected to them. In truth nobody knows who the tombs are for or how long they have been there.

Museums of Skopelos

Antoniou Family Olive Oil Museum

This olive oil mill with beautiful views is situated close to Glossa. Here you can learn about olive oil and purchase cold-press olive oil made right there for a delicious souvenir.

Skopelos Cultural Heritage Museum (Folklore Museum of Glossa)

This museum is situated in a renovated house built in 1926 in the village of Glossa. The museum opened its doors in 2008 and works to promote the cultural history of the island. Here you can see items from Skopelos naval history as well as photographs, manuscripts, and personal belongings.

Skopelos Folklore Museum ( Vakratsa Mansion )

This museum is situated in a historic house right in the middle of Skopelos town. It tells the story of the folk traditions of the area. The furniture in the museum belonged to the original family who owned it.

Museum of History

This museum is situated inside the house of 19th-century writer Pavlos Nirvanas. Today it showcases items from the history of the island of Skopelos from antiquity to the present day.

SKOPELOS Nature and outdoors

Drakontoschisma

This rock is connected to a legend regarding Saint Riginos. The dragon was terrorizing and eating the residents of the island until Riginos hunted the dragon down and killed it (apparently around 800 years ago). It is possible to get to Drakontoschisma by boat or you can view it from the cliffs above.

Scuba diving

Those who like to dive will find Skopelos an interesting spot to do so. There are multiple dive centers on the island that offer guided diving tours of great locations situated around the coastline. Free diving is also well known on Skopelos.

Like many Greek islands Skopelos offers many opportunities to walk around in its beautiful natural setting. There are a number of different trails for visitors, from simple strolls along the coast to full day hikes between villages on the island. It pays to take join a local on a guided hike too.

Taking a boat out to explore neighbouring islands is a popular option on Skopelos. One option is to head to Alonissos. This island boasts its very own national marine park. Here you may be able to spot dolphins, seals, and seabirds in their natural habitat.

Events on Skopelos

It worthwhile understanding what festivals or events may be on during your Skopelos holidays, especially if there are any national holidays involved.

Religious Events

February 25 is marked by the Feast of Agios Riginos . This local festival to honor the island’s patron saint takes place every year at Agios Riginos Monastery in Skopelos town. The relics of the saint are transferred, and locals attend vigils.

Easter is a colourful religious celebration everywhere in Greece. Think food, marching bands, processions, and fireworks. This takes place each year according to the Julian Calendar, usually between one and four weeks after western Easter.

Transfiguration of Jesus Christ takes place August 6. It is a popular feast day on Skopelos.

One of the most important religious events on Skopelos, as it is elsewhere in Greece, is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary . This takes place on August 15 and sees nationwide celebrations including traditional music and dancing. On Skopelos, celebrations can be found across the island but the main festival takes place in Glossa. Here you can enjoy live music and good food and wine.

On December 4 the island celebrates the Feast of Agia Varvara . This takes place at the Monastery of Agia Varvara and involves vigils and feasting on fish.

Other Events on Skopelos

The island’s Wine Festival is a must for wine lovers. This takes place every year in mid-September. Expect free-flowing wine, music, and dancing.

Another major event in August is the Loizia Festival . This festival honours the Greek-Cypriot composer Manos Loizos with storytelling, live music, and food.

The International Film Festival for Youth occurs in Skopelos town during July and August. Young people take part in workshops, and you can see screenings of films made by international filmmakers.

Getting Around in Skopelos

By Bus -- Skopelos is reasonably well served by public bus; the bus stop in Skopelos town is on the east end of the port. There are four routes. Buses run the main route every half-hour in the high season beginning in Skopelos and making stops at Stafilos, Agnondas, Panormos, the Adrina Beach Hotel, Milia, Elios, Klima, Glossa, and Loutraki. The fare from Skopelos to Glossa is 3€.

By Car & Moped -- Rent a car or moped at one of the many shops on the port. A four-wheel-drive vehicle at Motor Tours (tel. 24240/22-986; [email protected]) runs around 55€, including insurance; expect to pay less for a Fiat Panda. A moped should cost about 20€ per day.

By Taxi -- The taxi stand is at the far end of the waterfront (left off the dock). Taxis will take you to almost any place on the island. Taxis are not metered -- negotiate the fare before you get in. A typical fare, from Skopelos to Glossa, runs 40€.

By Boat -- To visit the more isolated beaches, take one of the large excursion boats; these cost about 70€ including lunch, and should be booked a day in advance in high season. Excursion boats to Glisteri, Gliphoneri, and Sares beaches operate only in peak season (about 20€). From the port of Agnondas, on the south coast, fishing boats go to Limnonari, one of the island's better beaches.

How to get to Skopelos island in Greece

The only way to travel to Skopelos in Greece is to take a ferry as the island has no airport. This guide shows all the available ferry routes to Skopelos, and also the best way to get to Skopelos from the UK.

The best ways to get to Skopelos island in Greece

How do you get to Skopelos?

The beautiful island of Skopelos in the Northern Sporades of Greece has become a popular holiday destination in recent years.

While the Mamma Mia movie might have had something to do with it, the turquoise waters, wonderful beaches, and dense forests which often lead to Skopelos being called the Greenest Island in Greece are eternal attractions!

Somewhat surprisingly though, reaching Skopelos island is not entirely straightforward, mainly because the island does not have its own airport.

In a way, it's something to be thankful for, as Skopelos hasn't become over touristy like the more famous Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini have.

In this guide, I'll show you the best ways of getting to Skopelos whether traveling from overseas or visiting Skopelos from other parts of Greece.

Skopelos Old Town

Closest Airports to Skopelos

International travelers planning to go directly to Skopelos after arriving in Greece have four main airports they can consider using as their initial gateway. These are Skiathos Airport, Volos Airport, Athens Airport, and Thessaloniki Airport.

The best airport to arrive at if at all possible, is the one on the Greek island of Skiathos. During the summer months, there are flight connections with some European cities on a variety of airlines. I suggest using Skyscanner to check out what services are available. UK readers might want to see if there are any flight deals on Tui .

Once you have arrived at Skiathos, you would then need to take one of the ferries over to Skopelos. I've more information on these ferries here: How to get from Skiathos to Skopelos

Volos Airport is another good choice, especially as now easyJet offer summer flights from London to Volos. From Volos airport, you'd then take a bus to Volos ferry port from where you would take the ferry over to Skopelos.

If you can't fly in to Skiathos or Volos, consider Athens and Thessaloniki. They both have large international airports, with Athens being the biggest.

Whichever of these you decide to arrive at, keep in mind that you'll then need to get a bus to a ferry port and then a ferry to Skopelos, or get a flight to Skiathos and then a ferry to Skopelos. More on this in a little while!

How to get to Skopelos from UK

A lot of my readers are from the UK, so I'll use this as an opportunity to emphasize again that you will find it easier to fly from the UK to Skiathos and then take a ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos.

In fact, I've got a whole guide dedicated to it: How to get to Skiathos

British Airways, Jet2, and TUI Airways all offer direct flights to Skiathos from a variety of airports all around the UK. These flights happen during the summer months, typically between June and October.

Once in Skiathos, you would then need to take a ferry to Skopelos. I've already linked to my guide on traveling from Skiathos to Skopelos in a previous paragraph, but you can also check out the Ferryhopper website.

In 2022, the addition of easyJet flights from London Gatwick to Volos airport has been a bit of a game changer in getting to Skopelos and the Sporades islands from the UK.

If you can't fly directly to Skiathos or Volos, your next best option is to fly into Athens International Airport or Thessaloniki International Airport.

How to get to Skopelos from Athens

If you can't get a flight to Skiathos Airport, then Athens might be your next best bet.

Getting to Skopelos from Athens will involve a bit of forward planning though, as there is no direct ferry route. The two best options are either to fly from Athens to Skiathos (flight time around 45 minutes), and then take a ferry to Skopelos, or to travel from Athens to Volos by bus and then take a ferry.

If you have to get from Athens International Airport to Volos, you'll need to take a couple of buses and a ferry.

Taking the X93 bus from Athens Airport to Lission bus station

Stage 1 : Take the X93 bus from outside Athens Airport which leaves every 30 or 40 mins to the KTEL Liosion Bus Station.

Stage 2 : At Liosion station, buy an intercity ticket for the bus trip to Volos (around 27 Euro). You will arrive at Volos Central KTEL station after a 4-5 hour journey. More info here: KTEL Volou

Stage 3 : Walk to the ferry port in Volos (about 5 minutes from the bus depot). Buy a ferry ticket to Skopelos (either Glossa port or the port in Skopelos Town).

Depending on timings, you might want to spend the night in Volos to break up the journey, and so you get the first ferry from Volos to Skopelos in the morning.

How to get to Skopelos from Thessaloniki

The international airport at Thessaloniki is another good gateway for travelers wanting to visit Skopelos island.

Like with Athens, there will be a multi-step journey to get you to Skopelos which will involve a couple of bus trips and a ferry.

Stage 1 : Take the X1 bus (every half hour or so) from Thessaloniki Airport to Makedonias/ Macedonia Intercity Bus Station. This is where the KTEL buses leave from, and the trip takes around 40 minutes,

Stage 2 : Buy your bus ticket to Volos (about 20 Euro more or less). The KTEL bus trip from Thessaloniki to Volos takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes. More info here: KTEL Macedonia

Stage 3 : Walk from the bus station in Volos to the ferry terminal (5 minutes). Get your ticket, and take the ferry – you're on your way!

Ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos

When taking the ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos, it's important to know that there are two main ports in Skopelos. These are Glossa and Chora (Skopelos Town).

When booking your ferry tickets, you'll need to work out which of these two ports your accommodation is closest to. Skopelos Town (Chora) is the main port, and is where most travelers will want to go.

Glossa is the port closest to Skiathos, and the ferry trip can take as little as 15 minutes. The ferry trip to Skopelos Town can take up to an hour from Skiathos.

Ferry boat info and ticket prices here: Ferryhopper

Ferry from Volos to Skopelos

When booking your ferry from Volos port on the Greek mainland to Skopelos, again keep in mind that there are two ports you could arrive at in Skopelos island.

The operators of ferries on this route include Blue Star Ferries, Anes Ferries, and Aegean Flying Dolphin. Travel time can be anywhere between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on the vessel, weather conditions, and company.

Ferry from Kymi (Evia) to Skopelos

The ACHILLEAS ferry boat sails from Kymi Port in Evia to Skopelos, but not every day of the week.

Currently, the ferry sails on Tuesday – Thursday – Saturday.

Ferry schedule info here: Ferryhopper

Hi Dave, I’m wanting to travel to Skopelos from Athens on Wednesday 13th September, returning to Athens on Tuesday 19th of September. Do you know of any reliable travel agents that can book the bus and ferry straight through for us? And if the ferry runs on those days? Thank you 🙂

Hi, I don’t work with travel agents so I can’t help you out there. It would probably work that you would get a bus to Volos, and then from Volos take a ferry to Skopelos. Looks like ferries are sailing on both of those days on Ferryhopper . Another option would be to get a flight from Athens to Skiathos, and then a shorter ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos.

Dave….do you know what days the ferry runs from Thessaloniki to Skopelos. I am flying from California, USA to Thessaloniki and then on to Skopelos to stay with family. Thank you

I don’t think there is a ferry from Thessaloniki to Skopelos (maybe there might be a late addition for AUgust but I wouldn’t bank on it). The best way would be to get a bus from Thessaloniki to Volos, and then take a ferry from Volos to Skopelos.

Hi Dave. I don’t know if you can help at all?! We have booked a villa in Skopelos not realising the ferry only seems to go 4 X a week. Is there any other way to get to Skopelos? Are there other ferry companies that take cars? Can you book a sea taxi or private boat that doesn’t cost the earth? Thanks for any tips! Rachel

I’m unclear on a couple of things – where are you trying to get to Skopelos from, and are you traveling with a car?

No car, same question. How to get to Skopelos from Kymi on days the ferry does not run. Thanks:Kinga

Hi Kymi, If there isn’t a ferry on the day you want it, unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about it. As far as I know, the boat runs Tuesday- Thursday – Saturday

‘We’re in a new era’: the 21st-century space race takes off

As humans enter what has been termed the ‘third space age’, it’s private companies – not governments – leading the charge

I f the 20th-century space race was about political power, this century’s will be about money. But for those who dream of sending humans back to the moon and possibly Mars, it’s an exciting time to be alive whether it’s presidents or billionaires paying the fare.

Space flight is having a renaissance moment, bringing a fresh energy not seen since the days of the Apollo programme and, for the first time, with private companies rather than governments leading the charge.

A series of recent milestone missions, not least the increasingly successful test flights of the largest rocket ever made and the first privately built probe to land on the lunar surface , have embedded a growing idea that humans are entering what has been termed the “third space age”.

“To say we’re in a new era, that’s absolutely fair,” said Greg Sadlier, a space economist and the co-founder of the know.space consultancy. “We’re in the era of competition, or the commercial era. The barriers to entry are lower, the costs have fallen, which has opened the doors to a much larger pool of nations,” he said. “It’s the democratisation of space, if you like.”

Today, more than 70 countries have space programmes, but for a long time, the US and the Soviet Union were the only big players.

Humanity’s first space explorer, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, orbited around the globe in April 1961. A year later, US President John F Kennedy gave his famous “we choose to go to the moon” speech, promising to get an American man on the lunar surface by the end of the decade ahead of a “hostile flag of conquest”.

A mural of Yuri Gagarin in Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow.

“To be sure, all this costs us all a good deal of money,” Kennedy acknowledged, but the cold war motivated him to spend the modern-day equivalent of hundreds of billions in US taxpayers’ money to win the space race.

The end of the cold war in 1989 brought a brief moment of global optimism, leading to the second, more collaborative space age. The International Space Station was assembled over 13 years and, since 2000, people of multiple nationalities have been living in space constantly, working together on experiments in the orbiting laboratory.

However, this second era also saw a dip in efforts to get humans farther out into space, symbolised by Nasa’s space shuttle programme that never sent people beyond Earth’s orbit and was eventually disbanded in 2011, in large part because the US government did not want to keep bankrolling its high costs. Afterwards, Washington had to rely on Moscow’s Soyuz rockets to get its astronauts into space.

SpaceX’s Starship rocket stands at its Texas launch pad.

Yet those high costs have now been driven down by private businesses entering the scene, often as government contractors. In the past few years, some of these businesses have started to make money, although not from headline-grabbing reasons such as space tourism but mostly for sending up communication satellites, especially broadband internet. Many estimates suggest the global space industry could generate revenues of more than $1tn within the next two decades.

In an article published last year by the influential strategy and management consultancy McKinsey & Company, global managing partner Bob Sternfels and his colleagues wrote to CEOs: “If space isn’t part of your strategy, it needs to be.”

They added: “Only recently have we seen significant acceleration down the cost curve: launch costs have fallen 95% (with another massive reduction expected in the coming years) thanks to reuse, improved engineering, and increased volumes.”

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has been at the forefront of this movement, launching 96 times last year with its reusable rockets. The company’s largest system, called Starship and still in development, has been marketed as an interplanetary explorer. Musk says he built the 120-metre rocket so that humans can colonise Mars. Before then, Nasa has contracted SpaceX to land astronauts, including the first woman, on the moon this decade.

As a business venture, it could make money well before then by serving as the equivalent of a flying cargo ship. Starship has a payload of up to 150 metric tonnes, five times the load the space shuttle could carry.

Global politics continues to play a role in space but with more players. China has overtaken Russia as the main national contender to the US, with its own space station in operation, probes on the moon and a rover on Mars. On Friday, Beijing is due to launch a robotic spacecraft to the moon’s far side.

The moon’s south pole, in particular, is seen as a “golden belt” for lunar exploration as it contains water ice, which could be used as drinking water and even broken down to make rocket fuel.

Scientists are nervous about both the politicisation and the commercialisation of space, especially with talk of future “mining” operations on the pristine, untouched moon. Advocates of space exploration, however, point to advancements made so far. The CT scan, a critical medical device that can identify tumours, traces its origins to pre-Apollo mission research; astronauts on the space station have been using the unique microgravity environment to better understand diseases such as Alzheimer’s .

For economists like Sadlier, the third space age creates an unprecedented situation – one that could upend the very foundations of the market system. “In economics, we assume that resources are limited; land is limited; natural resources are limited,” he said. “With space, it allows us to change that.”

View when driving from Yelisovo airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The first myth I want to disprove is that getting to Kamchatka is extremely costly. It’s not. Going between February and April, a return flight from Moscow can be had for 11,000 roubles (US$380 / £220). Not bad for 18 hours total flying time. In summer the flights are more expensive but still, if you book them a few months in advance, can be got for 16,000 roubles return.

It’s true, many people will tell you that March and April are the worst months to visit because the snow is starting to melt and everything’s a bit sloshy and dirty in settlements. On the other hand, these are great months for the independent traveller! During winter zimniki (temporary winter roads made of compacted snow or simply frozen river surfaces) open up all over Kamchatka, granting access to communities that in summer are totally isolated. Hitch hiking is possible right from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the very north of the peninsula. Alternatively, vehicles can be hired in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from tour firms. Also in the winter or early spring months places can be reached that are away even from the zimniki, either by snowmobile or by the use of cross country skis. For example, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia’s largest active volcano, can be accessed from the village of Klyuchi without the need even for a guide by a traveller with a pair of cross country skis. Bears do not wake up until mid-April so this is not a danger, but bears almost never attack anyone anyway.

The main disadvantages of winter travel in Kamchatka are that it is cold, there is no greenery and there are no bears, which some people come here especially to see.

The second myth I’d like to dispel is that travel around the peninsula requires hiring a helicopter. As mentioned above, in winter you can get almost anywhere by hitch hiking. I even hitched a lift with bear hunters on snowmobiles from their village to a reindeer herder encampment 100km away. In summer snowmobiles are replaced by horses, and transport is reduced from long distance ice-road journeys to irregular inter-settlement all-terrain vehicle trips. Hitch hiking is possible on these all-terrain vehicles though.

Throughout the year there are fairly expensive public helicopter flights to all settlements which are nevertheless much cheaper than hiring your own helicopter. There is also one permanent, year-round dirt road leading halfway up the peninsula. Some distance after the town of Milkovo, about 350km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , it forks. The right fork leads to Klyuchi , site of Eurasia’s largest active volcano, and further to the port town of Ust-Kamchatsk. The left fork leads to the indigenous Even villages of Anavgay and Esso. Daily buses go from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Klyuchi , Anavgay and Esso, costing about 1000 roubles each way. In winter a zimnik passable by lorries heads north from Anavgay 36 hours to the otherwise isolated town of Palana. From Palana more zimniki head further north to yet more isolated settlements. From the peninsula’s very northernmost settlements there are even EXTREMELY irregular snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle connections with Magadan Oblast and Chukotka. Another zimnik, only passable by all-terrain vehicle, heads from Anavgay to the village of Ust-Khayryuzovo on Kamchatka’s west coast.
