Since running this blog, the one thing I have discovered is that many parents worry about flying with children, especially babies. As such, I am always on the look out for products that can make flying with babies more stress free for parents. So when we were contacted by SkyBaby , a mattress for use by babies and toddlers on planes, we were keen to give it a test drive.

What is the SkyBaby Travel Mattress for Air Travel?

This is a travel mattress designed for use by babies and toddlers between 0- 2 years, depending of the weight and size of the baby. It can be used with and without a seatbelt and comes in its own bag which can be easily attached to a nappy bag. I love how compact the whole product is as when traveling with a baby or toddler packing space is always at a premium!

Why we Love the SkyBaby Travel Mattress for Air Travel!

We always favor overnight flights wherever possible when traveling with our little one. But this in itself poses challenges and worries about will your child sleep. Obviously a key is to get yourself booked into the bassinet row, but depending on flight business and luck of the draw this may not always be possible. Or in the case of Wandermust toddler may just simply refuse to sleep in the bassinet. So the sky baby seemed like a perfect solution. The padded mattress provides extra comfort for little ones when they have to sleep on your hand and also provides added protection against the metal seatbelt!

The fact that it is so compact and can be attached to a nappy bag easily means it doesn’t eat too much into your hand luggage allowance. But the thing I loved most is that it is machine washable. We find that we have a higher than usual accident rate on planes so being machine washable is key.

I hadn’t heard of a SkyBaby Travel Mattress ?for air travel until I received a tweet from @SkyBaby . I thought it would be excellent when we got up our courage and took our first holiday abroad. As many of you will know, Toddler H is not a great napper, often preferring to do with out. Well, we finally did it, we booked a fairly last minute holiday to Menorca, thinking it’s sunny there, family friendly and less than 2.5 hours on a plane. All boxes ticked, we just had to prepare for the flight (see my tips here, note. most of all include snacks, snacks and more snacks). We also popped the SkyBaby Mattress onto the side of my hand luggage (a rucksack). I thought by attaching it to the side it would be easily accessible. So on to my?SkyBaby Mattress Review:

What is it.

A travel mattress for babies up to 2 which allows them to sleep safely and be more comfy?when flying, or travelling.

How do you use it?

• Pop the infant seat belt through your seat belt ?(as instructed by the airline)
• Sit baby on the SkyBaby Mattress and do up their seat belt
• Then do the SkyBaby up over the top of the seat belt
• Nice and easy 🙂

Do I think it would be useful to a baby?

Yes, it’s got a lovely pillow section, two settings for tightness, and would be lovely and snug for a baby.

What about a toddler?

Yes! Two reasons:

• Toddler H actually slept on the way back. She napped for just over an hour, on hubby. The SkyBaby looked comfy, and provided some support to her sat on her daddy’s lap (still in the seatbelt).

Recommended?

Yes! ?I thoroughly, 100%, recommend the SkyBaby Travel Mattress?for both reasons listed above – sleep and keeping little one from undoing the seat belt.

It’s not just me that likes it, the SkyBaby website says it was “finalist for two awards (2013) with the UK & European Baby Products Association : Innovation Award & Baby and Nursery Trade Award” – that sounds like a great endorsement!!

Sky Baby Travel Mattress // Review

Getting your baby to sleep on the go is one of the things parents worry about most. If you are flying with a lap-infant and not lucky enough to take advantage of a bassinet or an extra seat the Sky Baby Travel Mattress  (£30) is for you.

The Sky Baby Travel Mattress is a lightweight mattress that is designed to make your baby more comfortable when sleeping in your arms. It is not a restraint but does have holes that allow you to use an infant seatbelt (required on flights inside the E.U for lap infants) while the device is in use.

We took the Sky Baby Travel Mattress with us on a trip to Switzerland. We were traveling without a stroller or a car seat, leaving limited options of places for the 9-month old to sleep on the go. As we were traveling only by train we packed lightly. The Sky Baby rolls into its own small stuff sack with a clip. We were able to easily attach this to our bags as we needed. Just before the flight I clipped it onto my purse so it would be easily available on the flight.

Once we boarded the flight and I got the other two littles settled in I tried to get my 9-month old into the Sky Baby. Honestly, I struggled for a bit. He was wiggly and I couldn’t quite figure out how to get the belt into the straps. (I tend to freak out a little bit when I can’t work things out.) I finally got the little little nursing and then slipped the Sky Baby under him and fastened the infant seatbelt through the holes.

We were on an Easy Jet flight and the flight attendant asked me not to fasten the elastic over the seatbelt until the seatbelt sign was off. The flaps are more for comfort than anything else anyway, so it was not a big deal.

The little guy nursed for takeoff and then fell asleep. I liked that I could use the Sky Baby a bit as a cover as he nursed. Once he fell asleep I do think he was more comfortable than he would have been on my arm alone. In the past I’ve struggled with how to hold him for an hour or more once he falls asleep. The Sky Baby gave a bit of structure to how I was holding him and the pillow on top let me rest it against the airplane. He happily slept for the remainder of the flight.

I relied on the Sky Baby a few times on the trip when we had a sleepy little one and I wanted to be sitting down. He sleeps well in the carrier as long as I am standing. Each time the Sky Baby seemed to provide a bed of sorts and was easier to hold than holding him on his own.

I was able to hold him comfortably and enjoy my glass of wine on the boat! I’ll count that as a win.

The Sky Baby is machine and hand washable, which is great in case of spit-up or a leaky diaper. I had no trouble wiping spit-up off the fabric with a damp cloth.

Depending on the size of your child you can use this device for ages 0-2. As you can see from the pictures my 9-month old exceeds the length of the Sky Baby but it still provides nice support for him when sleeping.

I was very excited to have received this product to review as I was travelling on a plane with a 2 month old and a 4 year old on my own… And anything to help the aeroplane journey more comfortable for my newborn was a bonus!

I found the SkyBaby Travel Mattress to be very lightweight and easy to transport around with me at the airport. The mattress comes in a small bag which is easy to take out and you just roll it up to put it back in. Once I had arrived on the plane I was able to put the airlines children’s safety belt through the SkyBaby mattress. Then I wrapped the wings around my baby boy making him all snug and comfortable whilst on my knee and especially as it had the extra padded pillow for his head. I was comfortable too. I was also able to breastfeed my baby whilst he was on the mattress too. He actually stayed asleep for the whole journey, just a quick dream feed halfway through the journey.

There were a few people on the flight who commented on the mattress and thought it was a great idea. They said how comfortable my baby looked.

I like the way it is fully washable. I will be taking this SkyBaby product with me on my next holiday when my baby will be 1½ as it says it’s up to two years… Although it does look quite short for a two year old.

All in all I would give this product 3.5 out of 5. Although lightweight and comfortable for the baby I think it is a little expensive at £29.99. Maybe for long haul flights or for people flying often with a baby but not for one holiday. Also it is quite short so not sure if it will fit a two year old.

With many airlines, babies under 2 years of age don't normally get their own seat on an aeroplane. SkyBaby is a compact pillow and mattress, and is great for helping them to be more comfy on your knee. It is designed to work with the airline infant belt, or can be used without it.

It is lightweight and compact and it fits nicely into hand luggage, or the bag provided allows SkyBaby to be clipped externally to something else, e.g. the nappy bag. SkyBaby is totally washable and passes BS EN ISO: 12952: Part 1.

SkyBaby meaures 56cm long (the width of the average airline seat) and 29 cm wide, and can be used from birth. SkyBaby can be used for babies of varying ages, depending on the size of your child and whether they will be happy to take a snooze on your knee.

How it works.

The simple steps to smooth, stress-free flights with your baby:

• Once you are in the airplane seat, make yourself comfortable and fasten your seat belt.
• If you are using an airline infant safety belt, ensure it is clipped around your adult seat belt.
• Take the SkyBaby out of its carry bag and unroll it.
• If you are using the airline infant safety belt, pass it through the left cut-out or right cut-out in the SkyBaby, depending which way your baby’s head will be facing. Close the airline belt around the baby.
• Wrap the wings snugly around your baby. There are two different-sized loops which expand and stretch around baby, and they are quick and easy to pop open when required.
• Your infant can now rest, sleep and feed in comfort.
• At the end of your flight, simply unfasten and roll up the SkyBaby travel mattress and pack away again into its carry bag.
• Any spills can be contained in the carry bag. Once at your destination, the mattress can be washed easily by hand or with a washing machine.
• It is also useful as a small portable bed for interconnecting flights or when waiting around at the airport

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
