My friend and I went on both the waterfall and cape tribulation tours, and they were amazing!!! We got to see and experience so much in two days. Our tour guide Charlie was so great, he had so much information to share and made the tours fun and engaging for everyone!!

An absolute banger of a tour! You will not regret booking with Uncle Brian’s Tours. We had the pleasure of Cousin Rohan and he made a ‘liquid sunshine’ (rainy) day the best day ever - full of energy and positivity. The food and snacks were incredible and so delicious. Thank you so much!

Had Brad as a tour guide who was epic 👌did the two day cape tribbin tour and it was perfect. Really enjoyed the two days from start to finish! Saw a cassowary, snakes, spiders and lots of insects which was pretty cool. Also saw some crocs as well which was pretty awesome.

Was totally awesome experience. Went both tours - one with ‘cousin’ Paul and one with ‘cousin’ Charlie. Had an amazing fun time seeing new places, had lots of good laughs, and had an informative experience at the same time. 10/10 recommend.

Had an absolute amazing day on the Cape trib 1 day tour. Adam was the best tour guide!! Hilarious, very knowledgeable and went above and beyond. Also learnt so many things from him. Thank you Adam for making this tour one to remember!

Did the Cape tribulation tour with Charley. Was absolutely amazing! The best organised tour I have ever done. Charley was a great tour guide, we had a fun group and value for money is also good. Besides the bus+guide, it also includes lunch, ferry and fees and a croc river cruise.

Daintree Rainforest Day Trips From Cairns

rainforest tour cairns

A very beauitful and special part of the world, the Daintree is certainly not to be missed. This remote area is situated 111kms north of Cairns and has the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, the tropical rainforest grows right down to the edge of the sea where fringing reef is met on the shoreline, this is commonly referred to as 'where the Rainforest meets the Reef'.`

Getting there is all part of the adventure. The journey to the Daintree travels along the Cook Highway north of Port Douglas and features beautiful scenery ranging from secluded palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands to the rich green of lush sugar-cane fields and rainforest covered mountains.

The Daintree River ferry is the gateway to the Daintree Coast and Cape Tribulation, and is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia. Once over the river there are many natural attractions to visit including rainforest walks, freshwater swimming holes and remote beaches.

There are also plenty of adventure activities that take place such as sea kayaking, horse riding, jungle surfing, snorkelling, night walks and more. Guided tours depart daily from Cairns.

Rainforest and Nocturnal Wildlife Spotlighting Tours Cairns

The Wait-a-While Rainforest Tour takes you wildlife spotting by both day and NIGHT! Visiting the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics Rainforest National Parks from Cairns, we have been hosting small (max 11 people) personal rainforest nocturnal wildlife spotlighting tours into the world’s oldest continuously surviving rainforest near Cairns for more than 30 years.

With an impressive success rate, we take our guests to the Atherton Tablelands to observe animals, such as the elusive platypus (we have a 90% + success rate) and the rare tree kangaroos, in their natural habitat as well as the nocturnal animals.

Cairns is a major tourist destination with thousands of visitors coming here each year to experience the Great Barrier Reef and yet relatively few discover the Cairns Tablelands (sometimes known as the Atherton Tablelands).

The Tablelands are within easy reach of Cairns offering a shorter drive time than any Daintree rainforest tours and greater rainforest wildlife spotlighting opportunities. This allows our tours to depart in the early afternoon. As the rainforest comes alive at night (80% of animals in Australia are nocturnal or more active at night), our spotlights enable us to capture the animals up in the canopy.

Our tour is best suited to active people who enjoy walking.  Part of the experience is the looking for the wildlife and that requires following trails through the forest.  The ground can be uneven and often muddy with medium inclines. So unfortunately we are not disable/wheelchair accessible. During the tour we usually cover around 3-4km on foot spread over at least 4 sites. The best time of day to spot wildlife in Australia is at dusk through to nighttime so you need to be comfy walking in the dark as well, however all the tracks we use at night are on flat safe ground.

Experiencing the  tropical rainforest at night is something you will remember, especially with an informative guide to help you understand this magnificent wildlife environment.

Tour Description:

After being picked up from your hotel (please note for hotels in Port Douglas there is an extra $150 per booking pick up fee) we go in search of Australian native animals around Cairns on our rainforest wildlife spotlighting tour. We make a series of short drives to visit several locations so you get a taste for the variety of sights in this area. Your guide will then introduce you to some of the world’s most unusual animals, including the elusive platypus (we have a 90% success rate), tree kangaroos, possums, gliders, flying foxes, bandicoots, echidnas, snakes, frogs and many others.

On the tour we will also learn about the tropical rainforest and how local Aboriginal tribes use the vegetation to make tools and to heal and make remedies to solve everyday common ailments.

Tour Details:

  • Departs Cairns around 13:30, Port Douglas 12:15($150 extra), Northern Beaches 13:00
  • Return to Cairns by 21:30 hours (hotel drop off)

1 Day Daintree - Cape Tribulation Rainforest Tour

Small group touring of 16 passengers

Tour departs Cairns, Palm Cove, Trinity Beach and Port Douglas

This full-day tour for those being picked up in Cairns and the beaches begins with a trip along the scenic coastal Great Barrier Reef Drive to Port Douglas. The road hugs the mountain side, and we stop at Rex Lookout to enjoy stunning views of the Coral Sea. From here, we continue to Port Douglas, picking up any extra guests and stopping at Flagstaff Hill, which overlooks the famous 4 Mile Beach.

The next stop is Mossman Gorge, where we refresh with local tea, coffee or a cold drink, before exploring this secluded gorge and rainforest paradise. The cool, clear waters of Mossman River tumble through and over giant granite boulders. We’ll take a guided walk, and you have the opportunity for a swim, should you wish to do so.

We then continue north to the Daintree Tea House and enjoy a quality restaurant lunch, with a choice of meals available, before stepping aboard a solar-powered electric boat to take a 1-hour cruise on the Daintree River. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles and other local wildlife.

Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef, and you can take it all in from the Kulki Lookout. However due to road closures & repairs we are only able to travel as far as Thornton Beach which is approx 13 km south of Cape Tribulation Beach. This is the most northern point of our day tour adventure, so from here, we begin the journey home, but not before a quick stop at the Daintree Ice-Cream Company, where you can purchase locally made tropical ice cream (at your own expense)

Our small group Rainforest tours are conducted in comfortable, air-conditioned, late-model vehicles, ensuring a pleasant journey throughout. Don't forget to pack your swimming gear for an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of your own paradise.

Adult $249| Child $199 (4-14yrs) Family 2A+2C $849 Departs Daily 7.00am

Due to the impact of Cyclone Jasper we are unable to access Cape Tribulation Beach due to road closures and repairs.

Despite the temporary change in itinerary, our guests will still experience the highlights of the area, including a tour of Port Douglas, a visit to Thornton Beach, an opportunity to indulge in delicious ice cream in the Daintree (at guests' own expense), and an immersive exploration of the renowned Daintree Rainforest at Mossman Gorge

Additionally, guests will embark on a thrilling 1-hour Daintree River Cruise, enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the Daintree Teahouse, partake in a guided walk at Mossman Gorge, and have free time for a refreshing swim (weather permitting)

We (2 adults, 3 kids) had the most incredible experience at Mossman Gorge, Daintree Rainforest & Crocodile Cruise, and it wouldn't have been the same without our fantastic host and guide, Rasa. From start to finish, Rasa made sure our day was nothing short of spectacular! First and foremost, the delicious array of fresh fruit Rasa provided was a refreshing and healthy treat. It set the perfect tone for the adventure ahead, keeping us energized and ready to explore the wonders of the rainforest. The attention to detail and thoughtfulness in catering to our needs was truly impressive. We were really impressed about Rasa's ability to strike a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. The day was filled with exciting activities and thrilling moments during the crocodile cruise and the tour through the rainforest yet Rasa managed to create a laid-back atmosphere where we never felt rushed. It allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural surroundings and appreciate the beauty of the river and the rainforest at a relaxed pace. The swim at the end of the rainforest tour in the gorge gave us a really refreshing and revitilasing end to the day. The entire trip was a day full of adventure and fun, and I cannot recommend this tour enough. If you're looking for a memorable experience led by a knowledgeable and caring guide, Rasa is the person to choose. Thank you for an unforgettable journey that will stay with us for a lifetime!

Guide to the Daintree Rainforest

  • Getting to the Daintree Rainforest
  • When to visit

A forest so spectacular, Sir David Attenborough called it “the most extraordinary place on Earth.”

The creeping vines and emerald canopy of the Daintree Rainforest have been growing for more than 180 million years. That’s right – it’s the world’s oldest tropical rainforest by an impressive 10 million years, so it’s no wonder that visitors can feel the ancient energy with every step. Just as special as the forest itself are the experiences you’ll find within it, from crocodile spotting to spear fishing. Indulge in the healing properties at a luxury spa, float gently down the river on a raft and soak up generations-old knowledge from the area’s traditional custodians, the Kuku Yalanji.

There are two parts to Daintree National Park, home to the Daintree Rainforest: the mountainous Mossman Gorge area and the coastal Cape Tribulation section. Mossman Gorge is around 22 kms (14 mi) from Port Douglas or 77 kms (48 mi) from Cairns, with the Cape Tribulation section a further 40 kms (25 mi) to the north.

  • Cairns Airport (65 kms/40 mi from Mossman Gorge); international and domestic arrivals
  • Hire cars are available at Cairns Airport, Cairns city and Port Douglas
  • Private and group tours to the Daintree Rainforest depart from Cairns and Port Douglas
  • Access to the Cape Tribulation section of the Daintree Rainforest is by car ferry across the Daintree River

The Daintree Rainforest unsurprisingly gets a lot of rain – with some areas experiencing up to 6 m (19 ft) of precipitation in a year. In the wet season, from December to April, you’ll encounter high humidity and frequent rainfall, but you’ll also experience gushing waterfalls and the rainforest at its most lush. The relatively mild and cool dry season, which extends from May to September, is ideal for long hikes in the national park.

  • High season: Late autumn to early spring (May to September)
  • Low season: Summer and early autumn (December to April)
  • Don’t miss: An Aboriginal-guided walk through the rainforest departing from Mossman Gorge Centre at any time of the year

  • Full weekly service expected to commence late April 2024

In the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Jasper, the Kuranda Range rail line faced substantial damage, including major track washouts, significant landslips, uprooted trees, and debris blocking the tracks at 61 different locations along the range. Despite the challenges, Queensland Rail's dedicated crews have been working diligently, prioritizing safety and speed to restore services.

We are pleased to report significant progress in this restoration effort, with 39 out of the 61 damaged sites now cleared.

Starting from late February, services will resume on weekends only. This strategic approach will provide our hardworking crews access to the rail track from Monday to Friday, enabling them to continue fortifying the rail corridor against future extreme weather events.

We anticipate completing our long-term restoration works by late April, which will allow us to return to our regular timetable. Rest assured that we will keep you informed of our progress, especially in the event that recovery efforts face setbacks due to heavy rain or other severe weather conditions.

History of Kuranda Scenic Rail It was in 1882 that the miners of Herberton were on the brink of total starvation, unable to get supplies due to flooding. A route to civilisation was desperately needed for the purpose of meeting ships at the port, to deliver goods to the city and towns to the west, and more importantly to bring back the spoils of the hinterland particularly tin, timber, small amounts of gold and subsequently sugar, tobacco, copper and lead. Adventure bushman and colourful pioneer, Christie Palmerston, was charged with finding a starting point for a railway. The Premier Sir Samuel Griffiths turned the first sod for the line which was to be built in three stages.

Men tackled the jungle and mountains not with bulldozers, jackhammers and other modern equipment, but with strategy, fortitude, hand tools, dynamite, buckets and bare hands. Great escarpments were removed from the mountains above the line and every loose rock and overhanging tree had to be removed by hand. After removing 2.3 million metres of earthworks, creating 15 tunnels, 93 curves, dozens of bridges and 75 kilometres of track, a banquet high up on the bridge with General Sir Henry Wiley Norman, Governer of Queensland marked the completion of Stoney Creek Bridge.

On June 15th 1891, Mr Johnstone, one of three Railway Commissioners at that time opened the line for goods traffic only. Just ten days later, the Cairns- Kuranda Railway line was opened to passenger travel. The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is truly a legendary demonstration of man’s ingenuity and nature’s wonder. The 34km Kuranda Scenic Railway was, and still is considered a remarkable engineering feat of tremendous magnitude.

Is it better to take the train up to Kuranda and Skyrail down, or in reverse? We prefer to recommend the train up to Kuranda in the morning and the Skyrail down the mountain in the afternoon. Freshwater Connection is more lively in the morning with atmosphere, the train is cooler in the morning as it is heritage and not air-conditioned it can get very warm in the afternoon. Skyrail is pretty either way but it is very nice seeing the view of the Coral Sea open up as you come over the mountain. Answer: Train up, Skyrail down

Do the tours including Train and Skyrail include return hotel transfers from all hotels in the Cairns area? Yes. Far North Queensland tour operators wait to reopen after ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper flooded Barron River

Warren Clinton stands on a muddy riverbank where his jetty and pontoon once stood.

He recounts his recent tribulations while they are still fresh in his mind but is frequently interrupted by the sound of his mobile phone ringing.

Each caller wants to take the riverboat tour of the mighty Barron River in Far North Queensland's rainforest mountain village of Kuranda.

Each time, Mr Clinton disappoints his caller — he does not know when he will be able to get back on the water.

"It's been very mentally draining, that's the most difficult part of it," he said.

Man in blue shirt, denim shots, woman in dark shorts, printed top, stand arm in arm on a riverbank, looking away seriously.

Operators still waiting

More than three months have passed since the ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused Barron's largest flood in more than a century.

Far North Queensland is heavily reliant on the tourist dollar, with one in five people employed in the industry, according to Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

But some tourism operators, including Warren and Melissa Clinton, are still not back on their feet.

An aerial image of a bridge over a flooded river full of muddy water, greenery on either side.

The business owners managed to save their boat from destruction in the flood, but the sheer deluge of water washed away their pontoon and a nearby weir.

"I've blocked out [tours] on our online booking system into May," Ms Clinton said.

"Because it's just taking so long and the weather is against you, getting the riverbank fixed and the weir fixed."

Peak season approaching

Governments have been encouraging tourists to go to far north Queensland ever since tropical cyclone Jasper struck in December, with discounted flights and accommodation packages .

Almost a three-hour drive north of Cairns is Cape Tribulation, a spot world famous for being the juncture of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

A small river jetty and pontoon with a moored covered tour boat, red flags, greenery.

Businesses there only opened to visitors in March for the first time since December, in time for the Easter weekend.

Café owner Lawrence Mason could not hide his relief at being able to work again.

But he is realistic about the "massive amount of repair work" still to be done on the road into his northern community.

A $10 million grant program to rebuild infrastructure will close mid-April.

Applicants are also waiting to find out whether they will receive a share of money set aside to support those who've lost income.

Tourism Minister Michael Healy said he hoped to advise all 119 applications of the outcome "in coming days".

Wildlife recovering

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen said it had been a "very stressful time".

"This is typically the launch pad for our main season but many of these businesses are coming in with very little cash flow," he said.

"So, we're hoping that in the next couple of days, we start to see those grant announcements coming through."

A riverboat cruises a wide river, viewed from above.

The Clintons expect it wil be at least five or six weeks before they can show people the wonders of the Barron again.

The visitors who make it there will see a very different landscape but the wildlife has shown signs of recovery.

"It's sort of helped clean the river, bring it back to its original wild state, I think," Mr Clinton said.

"The wildlife has been here longer than us, so they're used to this river flooding.

"It's amazing every year we go back after a flood, and the same fish are still there and the same crocodiles are still there."
