LPGA Tour announces ambitious 2021 schedule with new events and bigger purses

1291841290

Michael Reaves

As the LPGA Tour plays its final event of 2020, Commissioner Mike Whan revealed on Friday the 2021 schedule and his plan for playing a full season as COVID-19 continues to spread. The LPGA made it through the difficult 2020 season by staging 18 events, and Whan has reason to be optimistic looking ahead to the 2021 season: The 34-event calendar features $76.45 million in prize money, the highest ever for the LPGA. There are also new events, including a match-play tournament and a collaborative event between the LPGA, LET and European Tour, and new sponsors. It's an impressive feat coming out of a year full of uncertainty.

There are other reasons for optimism: Despite the shortened season, the tour said it saw more than a 30-percent increase in television viewership from the previous year, and with the COVID-19 vaccine beginning to be administered, there’s a possbility of completing a full season.

All of the tournaments that were canceled in 2020 have returned to the schedule, and there are two big international events on the calendar: the Solheim Cup, to be played at Inverness, and the Olympics in Japan in August.

“As we look to 2021, we are recapturing the momentum that we had at the beginning of 2020, and we are excited about our future, which will include news of new title sponsors and several significant purse increases,” Whan said.

RELATED: What's at stake in the LPGA's Tour Championship

Though Whan is an optimist, he’s also a realist. COVID-19 is still very much a factor as the 2021 season’s first event is just five weeks away. The testing protocols the tour implemented for 2020 will go unchanged heading into the 2021 season.

The 2021 schedule shows the changes that needed to be made so that playing a full season would be possible. Pushing international travel farther back, for example, is one way the tour is trying to make sure the full schedule goes off without much disruption. Instead of starting the Asia Swing in March, the events in Singapore, Thailand and China will take place in May. Moving those events had a ripple effect on the rest of the schedule. You’ll notice some events have moved from their normal dates and locations because of those early season changes. But by moving the Asia Swing, more time is given for making international travel easier, and for the vaccine to help slow the current spread of the virus.

1291840737

Whan, who says he’ll personally choose to get vaccinated, has no plans to mandate players to be vaccinated. But he believes that some airlines the tour uses are going to require it, as will some countries to which the tour travels.

“I think there could be some places we play, some events that host us, and maybe even some airlines we fly that might take that position even if we don't,” Whan said. “So I think playing some of our events might require vaccines, and I think for some people that don't want to get vaccinated they might have some choices to make there.”

1291839878

Playing a full season in 2021 means that status will not be frozen like it was in 2020. The way the shortened 2020 season worked, players couldn’t lose status based off of their performance. So, the status that almost every player had in 2020 is the same they’ll play with in 2021. One exception is Sophia Popov, who won a major as a non-member of the LPGA and has accepted full LPGA status for 2021. Q School was canceled in 2020, leaving only two ways to move up: win a major or finish in the top 5 on the Symetra money list for 2020 (instead of the usual 10).

In 2021, Q School is back. Players on the LPGA can lose status, and they can earn cards by playing their way onto the tour via Q School or the Symetra money list.

One of the big adjustments in 2020 was the loss of fans. Though there will be a very limited presence of spectators at the three early events in Florida, Whan looks at the next four tournaments in California and Hawaii as a target for when he’d hope to see larger numbers of fans. The first tournament of the year, the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., will have 1,800 sponsor guests onsite.

“Probably will not have fans in our first two events in Florida, but then after the couple weeks break and we head out west, we're hoping to have fans on the West Coast,” Whan said, aware that given the current state of California and its COVID-19 numbers, that goal sounds daunting. “I'm hoping by that time at least we're having some sort of limited footprint. We're really not afraid of a limited footprint on a golf course. It's six miles of space. If you want six feet of space there's no greater place to find it than on a golf course.”

This year was undoubtedly challenging for the LPGA. But the tour’s ability to successfully navigate the unprecedented year has resulted in good positioning for the future. The announcement of the 2021 season, a story of growth for the LPGA Tour, is a demonstration of that.

Nelly Korda wins Chevron Championship for an historic fifth straight LPGA victory

Sport Nelly Korda wins Chevron Championship for an historic fifth straight LPGA victory

Nelly Korda kisses a large trophy after winning a golf tournament

Nelly Korda has etched her name in the LPGA Tour record books, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in the Chevron Championship for her second major title.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the Women's PGA Championship.

The top-ranked Korda shot a 3-under 69 in the final round to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot victory.

“It’s been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf in a sense simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here,” she said.

Korda had a four-day total of 13-under 275 at Carlton Woods.

Her parents — former Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda and Regina Rajchrtova — beamed as she was presented with the trophy.

“She had a difficult ’22 and ’23 in certain ways,” Petr Korda said.

“She did not win a tournament in ’23 and some things probably made her humble and (she) put a lot of work into where she is right now. Without the work and commitment, she would not be here. So seeing that, I’m very happy.”

Korda entered the last round one shot off the lead after completing the last seven holes of the weather-delayed third round early Sunday morning (local time) on a windy and unseasonably cool day.

She birdied two of her first four holes to take the lead. Lauren Coughlin birdied holes 13 and 14 to get within two strokes, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put her four behind. She shot a final-round 68 finish tied for third with Canadian Brooke Henderson.

Korda nearly aced the par-3 17th, with her tee shot hitting the hole and hopping in the air before settling within 10 feet. She settled for par to maintain her two-shot lead.

Korda wowed the large crowd, which followed her throughout the day, by chipping into the wind for birdie on the par-4 10th hole to take a four-stroke lead. The 25-year-old raised her club above her head with one hand and pumped her fist after the ball rolled into the hole.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But the 2023 Rookie of the Year bogeyed the first two holes in the fourth round to fall out of the lead. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Henderson was tied with Korda for second to start the last round after she shot a 64 in the third round to set a scoring record for the tournament since its move from Mission Hills, California, to Texas last year.

But the Canadian, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, also faltered early in the final round, with a bogey and a double bogey in the first four holes.

Korda took home $US1.2 million ($1.8 million) from a purse of $US7.9 million, a significant increase from last year's purse of $US5.2 million. That brings her season earnings to $US2,424,216 and her career earnings to $US11,361,489.

Winners had been jumping into Poppie's Pond off the 18th green at Mission Hills since 1988, and Korda became the second to do it in Texas by leaping off a small dock into brown-tinged water.

World number two Lilia Vu was first to jump into the pond here after her win last season. She withdrew from this year's tournament before the first round after experiencing "severe discomfort" in her back during warm ups.

Eighteen-year-old amateur Jasmine Koo provided an unlikely highlight on the 18th hole. Her second shot bounced off the advertising board in the water and back into play. She ended up with a birdie to shoot 71.

Nelly Korda wins five LPGA events in a row

With a win at the Chevron Championship this weekend, Nelly Korda joined a small list of professional golfers who have won five straight LPGA Tour events.

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

Five in a row - Nelly Korda inked her name into the golf record books this weekend by winning her fifth straight LPGA Tour event.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

She celebrated the two-shot victory in style by doing a cannonball into the pond next to the 18th hole in Houston, as is tradition for every Chevron Championship winner.

KELLY: Love that tradition. OK. Last week we brought you Korda's story and her chase to become only the third player to accomplish the feat. And with a swing that most golfers would die for, Nelly Korda breezed her way past the competition.

SUMMERS: After the tournament, the 25-year-old golfer admitted that she was starting to feel the pressure of keeping that streak alive.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

NELLY KORDA: I'm going to enjoy this right now, and then I'll think about that. But, yeah, it's been an amazing time. Hopefully, you know, keep the streak alive.

SUMMERS: Now Korda says she will not be playing in this week's event, which is bad news for fans out in LA who were hoping they would get to see her play for a first-ever six straight wins.

KELLY: Yeah, although it's very good news for the rest of the players who now have a better shot to win.

Rosatom to survey contaminated areas near Elektrostal plant

!{Model.Description}

Russia’s Rosatom on 22 June signed a state contract with VNIPIpromtekhnologii to conduct a radiation survey in 2021 of three legacy radiation-contaminated areas in the Moscow Region, which adjoin the site of the Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ) in Elektrostal (part of the TVEL Fuel Company). The survey aims to obtain up-to-date and reliable information about the radiation situation in the three areas. The total survey area is some 582,000 square metres and the results of the work, including recommendations on the observation regime for the objects located in this territory, will be presented no later than 30 October.

MSZ currently produces nuclear fuel for Rosatom’s fleet of reactors as well as for some NPPs in Europe. However, from the late 1940s to the mid 1950s, at plant No 12 (the predecessor of MSZ), work was carried out to process imported uranium ores. The ores were initially stored along the railway tracks running south of the industrial site of the plant, resulting in contamination.

At another site, radioactive contamination is a consequence of the collapse in 1953 of a tailings dam. From 1950, the tailing dump was used to store waste from the production activities of the enterprise. The third small area with a radiation anomaly is near the village of Subbotino and was decontaminated in 2016 as part of the implementation of the programme activities of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Radon. The content of radionuclides in the soil was reduced to levels corresponding to the radiation safety requirements for land plots for the construction of residential houses, buildings and structures for public and industrial purposes. The radioactive waste (some 10 cubic metres) was sorted, packed and prepared for shipment for processing, conditioning and temporary storage.

LPGA Tour on ESPN+

The Chevron Championship on ESPN+ is part of a two-year deal  announced  in November 2023 in which ESPN+ will present live featured group coverage of eight LPGA Tour tournaments through the 2025 season. The first event under the new agreement was the 2023 CME Group Tour Championship last fall, and The Chevron Championship is the first of four LPGA Tour events on ESPN+ in 2024.

This latest deal continues a longstanding relationship between the LPGA Tour and ESPN.

  • In 2022, ESPN+ streamed the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G and the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G.
  • ESPN televised a schedule of regular LPGA Tour events from 1979-2009, and ABC covered the CME Group Tour Championship from 2015-2018.
  • ESPN aired the first two rounds of the AIG British Open from 1982-2002 and all four rounds from 2010-2015, as well as the first two rounds of the U.S. Women’s Open from 1982-2014.
  • The first golf ever televised on ESPN was the LPGA Sahara Open on Sept. 8, 1979, ESPN’s second day on air.

The remaining slate of LPGA Tour events on ESPN+ this season will be announced later this year.
