Konark Sun Temple in Odisha: Essential Visitor's Guide

puri to konark places to visit

Richard I'Anson/Getty Images

The Konark Sun Temple is not only a wondrous UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's undoubtedly the grandest and best-known sun temple in India, and also one of the country's most popular monuments . Nearly 2.5 million people visit it per year. This is the highest footfall of any non-Mughal monument. The temple's design follows the popular Kalinga school of temple architecture. However, unlike other temples in Odisha , it has a distinctive chariot shape. Its stone walls are engraved with thousands of images of deities, people, birds, animals, and mythological creatures.

The Sun Temple was constructed towards the end of Odisha's temple-building phase in the 13th century by King Narasimha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty (whose great grandfather renovated the Jagannath Temple in Puri ). Dedicated to Surya the Sun God, it was made as his colossal cosmic chariot with 12 pairs of wheels pulled by seven horses (sadly, only one of the horses remains).

The temple is believed to celebrate glory of the Ganga Dynasty and the king's triumph over Muslim rulers of Bengal. Its many sculptures depicting war scenes and the king's activities support this.

However, it remained a mystery as to how the temple was built until the 1960s, when an old palm leaf manuscript was discovered. Its full set of 73 leaves comprehensively chronicled the temple's planning and 12 years of construction (from 1246 to 1258). The information is documented in a book, published in 1972, called New Light on Sun Temple of Konarka  by Alice Boner, S. R. Sarma and R. P. Das.

Unfortunately, the Sun Temple's grandeur didn't last. It fell into ruin and the massive rekha deula tower that covered the shrine's inner sanctum eventually collapsed. Although the exact time and cause of the destruction remains unknown, there are plenty of theories about it such as invasion and natural disaster.

The temple was last documented as being intact in the 16th century by Abul Fazal in his account of Emperor Akbar's administration, Ain-i-Akbari . 200 years later, during the reign of the Marathas in Odisha in the 18th century, a Maratha holy man found the temple abandoned and covered in overgrowth. The Marathas relocated the temple's Aruna  stambha (pillar with Aruna the charioteer seated atop it) to the Lion's Gate entrance of the Jagannath Temple in Puri.

British archeologists became interested in the temple in the 19th century, and they excavated and restored sections of it in the 20th century. The Archeological Survey of India continued the works after it took over responsibility for the temple in 1932. The temple was subsequently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Another round of extensive restoration works commenced in 2012 and are ongoing.

Konark is part of the Bhubaneshwar-Konark-Puri triangle. It's located on the coast of Odisha, about 50 minutes east of Puri and 1.5 hours southeast of capital city Bhubaneshwar.

Getting There

Regular shuttle buses run between Puri and Konark along picturesque Marine Drive. The cost is 30 rupees. Otherwise, you can take a taxi. It will cost about 1,500 rupees. The rate includes up to five hours waiting time, and stops at Chandrabhaga and Ramchandi beaches on the way. A slightly cheaper option is an auto rickshaw for about 800 rupees round trip.

Odisha Tourism also conducts inexpensive bus tours that include Konark.

How to Visit Konark Sun Temple

The temple is open daily from sunrise until sunset. It's worth getting up early to see the first rays of dawn evocatively illuminate its main entrance and to avoid the crowds.

Tickets cost 40 rupees for Indians and 600 rupees for foreigners. There's no charge for children under 15 years of age. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket counter at the entrance to the monument or online here (select Bhubaneshwar as the city).

The cooler dry months, from November until February, are the best time to go. Odisha gets extremely hot during the summer months, from March until June. The monsoon season follows, and it's also humid and uncomfortable then.

If there's anywhere you should hire a guide in India, it's at the Sun Temple. The temple is steeped in mysterious myths, which a guide will help unravel. Government-licensed guides cost 250 rupees per hour, and you'll find a list of them near the ticket booth at the temple entrance. The guides will approach you there, as well as inside the temple complex.

Before visiting the temple, it's worth stopping by the new state-of-the-art Konark Interpretation Center, which opened in early 2018. It provides a great deal of information about the temple and Odisha, plus clean public toilets (the ones at the temple complex are avoidable) and a cafeteria. There's an entry fee of 30 rupees.

What to See

The Sun Temple complex consist of two main parts -- a dance pavilion ( natya mandapa ), and assembly hall ( jagamohana ) with pidha deula roof on the same platform as the remains of the shrine's rekha deula tower. There's also a separate dining hall ( bhoga mandapa ) to the left side of the complex and two smaller temples to the rear.

The main entrance leads to the dance pavilion, guarded by two imposing stone lions crushing war elephants. The roof of the pavilion no longer remains. However, its 16 intricately carved pillars showing dance poses are a highlight.

The audience hall is the most well-preserved structure, and it dominates the temple complex. Its entrance has been sealed and the interior filled with sand to prevent it from collapsing.

The audience hall and shrine form the chariot, with the wheels and horses carved on either side of its platform. The wheels are all the same size but each has different motifs on it. The rims are adorned with nature scenes, while the medallions in the spokes have women in mostly erotic poses. Notably, the wheels function as sundials that can accurately calculate the time.

A collection of sculptures from the temple is displayed at the Konark Sun Temple Museum, operated by the Archaeological Survey of India. It's situated to the north of the temple complex and is closed on Fridays. The entry fee is 10 rupees.

The sprawling, world-class Konark Interpretation Center also has five galleries with interactive exhibits and multimedia displays. The galleries are devoted to the history, culture and architecture of Odisha, as well as sun temples across the world. An interesting film about the Konark Sun Temple is screened in the auditorium.

Every evening at the front of the temple complex, except when it's raining, a sound and light show narrates the historical and religious significance of the Sun Temple. The first show starts at 6.30 p.m. from November to February, and 7.30 p.m. from March to October. The show is screened again at 7.30 p.m. from November to February, and 8.20 p.m. from March to October. It runs for 40 minutes and costs 50 rupees per person.

You'll be provided with wireless headphones and can choose whether you want to hear the narration in English, Hindi, or Odia. The voice of Bollywood actor Kabir Bedi is used in the English version, while actor Shekhar Suman talks in Hindi. The Odia version features Odia actor Bijay Mohanty. High-definition projectors, with state-of-the-art 3D projection mapping technology, are used to project images onto the monument.

If you're interested in classical Odissi dance, don't miss the Konark Festival , which is held at the temple during the first week of December each year. The International Sand Art Festival takes place at Chandrabhaga beach, near the temple, at the same time as this festival. There's another classical music and dance festival in Konark in late February.

Legends and Eroticism

The Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh are well known for their erotic sculptures, but the Sun Temple has an abundance of them too (much to the overt interest of some visitors).  If you do want to see them in detail, it's best you carry binoculars as many are found high up on the walls of the audience hall and are weathered. Some of them are blatantly obscene, including depictions of sexual diseases.

But why all the rampant eroticism?

The most favored explanation is that the erotic art symbolizes the merging of the human soul with the divine, achieved through sexual ecstasy and bliss. It also highlights the illusory and temporarily world of pleasure. Other explanations include that the erotic figures were meant to test the self-restraint of visitors before god, or that the figures were inspired by Tantric rituals.

An alternative explanation is that the temple was constructed following the rise of Buddhism in Odisha , when people were becoming monks and practicing abstinence, and the Hindu population was declining. The erotic sculptures were used by rulers to rejuvenate interest in sex and procreation.

What is obvious is that the sculptures reflect people who took delight in the pursuit of all kinds of pleasure.

Where to Stay

If you're not staying in Puri, there are a couple of decent options in the area. The best one is Lotus Eco Resort on Ramchandi Beach, about 10 minutes away from Konark. An auto rickshaw will take you from the resort to the temple for about 250 rupees. If you'd prefer eco-friendly glamping, check out the cheaper Nature Camp Konark Retreat.

What to Do Nearby

The picturesque road from Puri to Konark crosses Balukhand Konark Wildlife Sanctuary, and passes by Ramchandi and Chandrabhaga beaches. Ramchandi, where the Kusabhadra River enters the Bay of Bengal, is the more serene of the two. Water sports are available there, and you can also visit the temple of the local deity. Those who are interested in surfing can get in touch with Surfing Yogis for lessons. Closer to Konark, Chandrabhaga is an auspicious Hindu pilgrimage site, where Lord Krishna’s son Shambo is said to have prayed to the Sun God and been cured of leprosy.

Do spend a couple of days in Puri, where you can visit the Jagannath Temple and Raghurajpur handicraft village . Grass Routes offers this fascinating and insightful Puri Old City walking tour, which is highly recommended for learning more about the temple and city's heritage.

A side trip an hour northeast to Astaranga beach (meaning "colorful sunset") is worthwhile as well. Locals are involved in fishing and salt collection there. The shrine of revered Muslim saint Pir Jahania is another attraction the area.

A must ride for all nature lovers.

Single Day Travel: Can opt for solo ride as well.

If so ever, you get a chance to visit Bhubaneswar , the reason of visit might be anything, be it work or some family function, never miss the chance. Bhubaneswar( The city of temples), is not only emerging as the next technological hub in India , but also a place where tradition, culture and technology runs hand in hand. People here celebrate festivals rounds the year (A very popular proverb describes - Odisha ( Kalinga ) celebrates 13 festivals in 12 months).

Forget about weekend gateways, when you are in Bhubaneswar. If you want to run away from city life, all you need is spare some couple of hours. For example, this trip of 159 kms, can be completed in hardly 6-7 hours. You can leave your home in morning and return back by evening.

We had hardly planned for the day. We got together near Kalpana Square (en route, Puri - Cuttack road) at 9am and were ready to roll on. I personally believe the old route to Puri was more enjoyable (amidst villages, coconut trees, farm lands, cool breeze, trees on either side of road standing tall and acting as road-side protection barrier). The newly built road is a 6-lane road, bypassing all the villages. We started of from Bhubaneswar and reached Dhauligiri in the outskirts of the town in 40 mins.

Dhauligiri is an ancient Buddhist monument, built by King Ashoka on the ground of the Kalinga War. It is said that, when Ashoka invaded Kalinga, the number of causalities in the war was so high that the hill and the river DAYA, flowing adjacent to this hill, was colored red with blood. The sight of the war moved Ashoka. He saw some Buddhist monks pass by in peace, not caring about the materialistic world. It was here, where Ashoka decided to accept Ahimsa & live the Buddhist way of life. He quit his invasions and turned from Chanda Ashoka to Dharma Ashoka . There is a garden just below the hill, which houses ancient rock-stone engravings from 2nd Century BC. The best time to visit this place is either during the sun-rise or the sun-set. You will definitely love this place. The Peace Pagoda - Dhauligiri.

Moving ahead, we reached Pipili .

The whole little town of Pipili is beautifully decorated with applique works. As you ride through the streets in the town, you will be mesmerized with the craftsman's antiques. Pipili, not only preserves this age old tradition of producing appliques, it is the source of income for majority of families in the town. Make sure to collect some memento for your trip.

Moving ahead with the journey, we came to this little village called Sakhigopal . It is the village of the sacred, famous Sakhigopal Temple. You can find plenty of local restaurants to take a break or sip some fresh coconut water. I would personally recommend having food in this even smaller village called Chandanpur . The restaurant called "Padmalaya" is the most popular in the area. The cooks adhere to Jain style of food preparation i.e. No onion, No garlic & NON-VEG - a strict NO. Even then, I can personally assure you the quality and taste of the food served here. So tasty and yummy it is. Try the sweets available - especially the Rasogola, Chenapoda, Rabidi and Malpua. The purity of ingredients i.e. milk, ghee (clarified butter) and sweeteners used are no doubt the best. All organic, cooked using wood and earth wares.

Rolling ahead, we enter the Holy City of Puri . The Jagannath Dham. One of the 4 Dhams(religious centers) for Hinduism.

is restricted only for Hindus and is famous around the world, for the annual Rath Yatra (Journey of the Lords in chariots). Speaking of historical, religious and political importance of Lord Jagannath and Jagannath Temple will take me a year or more to complete. I have spent my childhood in Puri and so I share a deeper relation with this holy place. I get all nostalgic whenever I visit Puri. Am proud and lucky to have spent my childhood here in this holy place.

Not to mention, Puri had one of the best beach in the world. The Golden Sea Beach is what we used to call it. It is still beautiful but largely polluted. As kids, we used to go for shell hunting on the beach, play all evening, have fast foods and return back home happily. Now a days, you find garbage all around the beach with stray dogs living on them. I wish, people of Puri realize the importance of the beach before it is too late.

Coming back to the journey, we spent some time to bow our head before Lord Jagannath and rode ahead towards the much awaited Puri-Konark Marine Drive . It is serene out there. Clear and well built roads, fresh & cool breeze, low traffic, almost no pollution and sea running alongside the road. What more do you want ?

Photo of Puri to Konark, Marine Drive - A Mesmerizing Journey 3/3 by Prannoy Ray

We stopped in some random Dhaba for lunch and had delicious fish curry with rice. Looking for food will never be a problem for anyone in Odisha. You can find any type of cuisine in every part of the state.

Make sure you visit the famous STONE CARVERS of Odisha en-route the marine drive. Mementos are available starting from Rs.30 to Rs.3 Millions or even more. These artists are the direct descendants of the Carvers from the age of King Narashima I.

Beleshore and Ramachandi are two temples situated on the Sea side, 10-15 Kms apart. The entire region is labelled as wildlife sanctuary & these temples are situated just inside them. The beach adjacent to these temples are low populated, clean and if you happen to be lucky, you can find turtles, crabs, foxes and wild bores dwelling in the open.

Coming to the end of the trip, we reach the Black Pagoda - Konark and Chandrabhaga Beach. Konark is an ancient Sun temple, famous for so many reasons. There are numerous legends associated with it. It's beauty attracts tourists from far end of the world.

World Famous, annual is the time, when the whole town is decorated, Indian Classical Music roars in the air, dance programs are run throughout the night, visitors from every corner of the world flood in, musical & dance maestros (Ustad Zakir Hussain, Flute maestro Hari Prasad Churasia, Amzad Ali khan, Manasi Pandya, Pandit Birju Maharaj to name a few) are invited for Guest performance and a lot many to describe.

After visiting the Konark Temple, we spent some time on the beach of Chandrabhaga, had quick snacks, before returning back to Bhubaneswar via Pipili. It usually takes 6-7 hours for the trip, but if you are a first time visitor, you might end up sparing more time in such amazing breath-taking monuments and serene beaches.

The best time to visit Puri-Konark is during October to January. While Bhubaneswar is well connected to every city of India (being the capital of Odisha), Puri-Konark can be visited only by road or rail. Motorcycles and taxis are available for rent at a very nominal and affordable cost.

Bhubaneswar, Puri & Konark – 4 Days Itinerary

zoomcar-odisha

My mom is usually sceptical about driving on foreign lands. She prefers a chauffeur-driven vehicle to a self-driven one. However, this time, while planning my trip, when I asked her, she agreed on taking a Zoomcar. Surprising right! We were at Bhubaneswar to attend my friend’s wedding, another one indeed! Therefore, we decided to extend our visit for four more days to explore nearby cities.

Table of Contents

Reaching Bhubaneswar

There are plenty of flights from Delhi to Bhubaneswar, which you can book as per your schedule. Those who stay in the eastern belt can also reach here via train or car.

Here’s how we managed to cover four cities in 4 days:

Day 1: bhubaneswar.

bhubaneswar-odisha

We started our day with an authentic Odia breakfast at my friend’s house. Post, which we headed to collect our Zoomcar, parked at the Yamaha Showroom in Kharabela Nagar. After spending half an hour completing all the formalities, we began our journey. We went to Dhauli, the famous Lingaraj Temple and Odisha State Museum. We ended our day gorging on street food at Unit I & II market. I would recommend having another day for the city to explore Nandankanan Zoological Park and Udayagiri-Khandagiri caves.

Day 2: Puri

puri-the-beach-city

Puri is a 1.5-hour drive from Bhubaneswar. We started at 9 a.m from Bhubaneswar, and it was a delight to drive on the Bhubaneswar-Puri Highway. As we reached closer to our hotel, the drive became scenic, with the Bay of Bengal to our left and the bustling city to our right. After check-in, we visited Swargadwar beach right opposite our hotel. We had maggie for lunch from a nearby shaft and headed for sightseeing. We visited the Jagannath Temple and explored the market next to the temple. Next, we went to Puri Beach, explored the beach market and ended our day watching a beautiful sunset at the Golden beach. We stopped by the Ethnic Village Restaurant at Mahodadhi Palace to try out the authentic Odia cuisine for dinner.

Tip: The State Handloom Emporium at Jagannath Temple parking is the best place to buy souvenirs.

Day 3: Chilika Lake , Satpada

chilika-lake-satpada

Chilika Lake, the world’s second-largest brackish water lagoon, is merely 1.5 hours from Puri. There are many sightseeing spots at Chilika Lake. However, Satpada is closest to Puri and is the only place where you can spot Irrawaddy Dolphins. We started our journey at 8:30 a.m and reached the Chilika Lake jetty ticket counter at 10:00 a.m. They had various packages available from which we chose the 4-hour boat ride that covered the Dolphin sighting point and Sea mouth. Our first stop was the dolphin point, where we had three sightings. From there, it took 1.5 hours to reach the sea mouth. On our way, we saw many birds like seagulls, herons and stork. We spent half an hour exploring the Sea mouth and admiring its beauty. I had some fresh prawns before heading back to the jetty. On our way back, we saw ten sightings, which was a thrilling experience indeed!

We reached Puri at 4 p.m. Post which we explored the Lighthouse next to our hotel. It gave us a mesmerising 360-degree view of the beach city. In the evening, we explored the street food stalls at the beach market. For dinner, we headed to Sholo Ana Bengali to gorge on authentic Bengali food.

view-from-swargadwar-lighthouse

Tip: On your way to the Lake, locals selling boat rides at a cheaper cost might chase you. However, ignore them, as their boats don’t follow any safety measures. I recommend booking your boats from Government assigned stalls only.

Day 4: Konark

konark-odisha

It was our last day in Odisha. We checked out at 9:30 a.m from our Hotel in Puri and headed to Konark. It was an hour-long drive through the Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary. On our way, we stopped by the NuaNai Nature camp to see the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. However, we couldn’t locate the breeding zone, as there was no one to guide us. We then headed to Ramachandi beach, which was our first spot for sightseeing in Konark. From where we went to Chandrabagha beach and Konark beach. We spent some time by the beach, sipping coconut water before heading to the Sun Temple, our last sight for the day. It is the most famous attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts millions of tourists every year. We spent 1.5 hours admiring the brilliant architecture of the temple before heading back to Bhubaneswar.

bhubaneswar-airport-food

On reaching Bhubaneswar, we dropped our Zoomcar at the same pick-up point. After which we booked our cab to the airport. We were hungry by the time we reached the airport, as we didn’t have lunch. The Bhubaneswar airport is tiny as compared to the Delhi Airport and had limited food outlets with limited options that were expensive. The counter on the first floor serves south Indian delights had a long queue. Therefore, we bought coffee and chicken roll from the outlet on the ground floor to curb our hunger.

Four days went by so quickly, and not even once we felt tired, bored or unsafe. The roads are beautiful to drive, people are jolly and helpful, and the weather is so pleasing that we felt like staying here forever.

P.S: The best time to visit Odisha is between November to March.

Puri Konark Bhubaneswar Tour

Puri's energetic and barely stuffed boulevards with brilliantly painted houses, pastiches of provincial structures, has its very own appeal. The Jagannath Temple which takes off out of these lanes rules the horizon. The Chakratirtha (CT) Road toward the East, the waterfront of Marine Drive Road toward the West, and the score of lodgings, resorts in the center and the packed Bada Danda road with hotels and shops offering religious keepsakes and the vivid pattachitra compositions are the center points of activity. The significant lot of drift, much cleaner towards the eastern end, stays swarmed with sun bathers and swimmers in the season with neighborhood anglers filling in as lifeguards. Excepting the pioneers, congregating in hundred thousands amid the yearly Rath Yatra, Puri's Traveller scene is commanded by Bengalis from Kolkata and some youthful western and Japanese guests investigating the laidback appeal of the town for the most part by walking.

Bhubaneswar is the capital city of the Orissa . It is the largest city of the state, and has become the center of economic and religious importance in the region. Bhubaneswar is called the Temple city of India, due to the presence of large numbers of magnificent temples and architectural heritage. The modern city of Bhubaneswar was designed by the German architect Otto Konigsberger in 1946. Like Chandigarh and Jamshedpur; it is one of the first planned cities of India. The history of Bhubaneswar may be viewed in two phases: Ancient Bhubaneswar and Modern Bhubaneswar. While the ancient city has a history that goes back to more than 3000 years to the Kalinga empire, the modern city came into existence in 1948.

The magnificent  Sun Temple at Konark  is the culmination of Orissan temple architecture, and one of the most stunning monuments of religious architecture in the world. The poet Rabindranath Tagore said of Konark that 'here the language of stone surpasses the language of man', and it is true that the experience of Konark is impossible to translate into words.

The massive structure, now in ruins, sits in solitary splendor surrounded by drifting sand. Today it is located two kilometers from the sea, but originally the ocean came almost up to its base. Until fairly recent times, in fact, the temple was close enough to the shore to be used as a navigational point by European sailors, who referred to it as the 'Black Pagoda'.

Places to visit in one day in Puri and Konark when visiting from Bhubaneswar by private car

1. konark temple and beach.

Constructed in the 13th century, the Black Pagoda or the Konark Sun Temple used to be the 61 m high chariot-shaped temple. Now, mostly in ruins, you can still witness the intricately stone-carved pillars, walls, and wheels. It reflects accurate Kalinga architecture, where the day’s 1st sunray falls on the Surya image in the Garbha Griha.

Konark or Chandrabhanga beach is a pristine beach. Due to its clean shores and transparent waters, it has been awarded Blue Flag Certification. The Sand Art Festival is organized every year during the 1st week of December. You can participate in popular fishing activities.

Must See / Things to Do: Witness the grandeur of the temple’s ruins.

2. Puri Jagannath Temple and Beach

Defying Nature’s Laws, Puri Jagannath Temple is a massive historical structure that has no shadow at any time of the day and in any direction. It is one of the oldest Hindu temples in India , still functional.

You can admire the Khondalite stone used to build the temple in the 10th century. Marvel at the 11 m high towering Aruna Stambha, two stone lions guarding the main entrance on the eastern side, the Lion Gate, and the huge inner courtyard with 30 smaller temples. The priests follow the unchanged customs since its inception.

Puri Beach is an all-time favorite. It is a long stretch of fine golden sand. It is also one of the safest beaches. Explore the lighthouse, take a stroll or buy knick-knacks from the beach stalls. You can even taste crispy fish fries or local street food.

Must See / Things to Do: Pray to the almighty and enjoy the serenity along the beach.

A well-known Odisha handicraft village, Pipli has a history that dates back to the 12th century. You can admire the stunning Chandua applique and patchwork. Pattachitra and stonework are also famous art exports to the world.

On a large cotton cloth as the base, artisans apply diverse hues, embroidering and stitching small patches with flowers, animals, and scenes. They also make Tarsas or heart-shaped wooden pieces, used in chariots.

Earlier the craftsmen only made exquisite canopies and umbrellas, for the temple and kings. Nowadays, you can get lampshades, puppets, wall hangings, lanterns, pillow covers, bed sheets, cushion covers, purses, tablecloths, and handbags.

Must See / Things to Do: Shop local products and interact with locals.

4. Urban Haat

Launched in 2009, Urban Haat is a recently created marketplace housing more than 40 shops under one roof. There are also 2 green rooms, 1 amphitheater, 1 utility building, and 5 exhibition halls.

An endeavor by IDCO, Urban Haat connects local artisans and their colorful handicrafts to tourists. It is an attempt to revive the rich cultural heritage and centuries-old handicraft industry by displaying its commodities before visitors. It aims to provide general employment opportunities to the local people. Open cultural shows are organized in the evening and fortnightly national textile exhibitions during the annual Ratha Yatra festival.

Must See / Things to Do: Marvel at the wide array of local and handmade items.

Really the team provided 100% satisfaction guarantee, strictly adhering to the plan approved especially the food and accommodation arrangements, the prompt pickup and travel. The language problem doesn't hinder the spirit of our journey. We have no hesitation to recommend Mypuritour for those who wishes to visit Puri. To add the charges for the tour plan are only reasonable.Once again hats off to Mr. Avinash and co for making good arrangements and taking personal care for our visit . One suggestion is that the drivers maybe advised to interact a little more with the tourists by giving a brief summary of the touring sites in advance
