Norwegian Epic Studio Staterooms Can Actually Be a Good Deal

It’s all about “doubles.” Double Dutch, double trouble, double whammy and when it comes to cruising, the ever-present double occupancy.

If you are new to solo cruising or if it’s your umpteenth go at it, you probably have run into the dreaded Single Supplement. People cruise and travel solo for a variety of reasons, from business to a divorce celebration.

On average, almost all cruise lines…almost all of the time…charge a solo passenger 200% of the base cruise fare. Or even worse, they double-charge for the port fees and taxes!

Norwegian Epic Studio Stateroom

Norwegian Epic Studio Staterooms are Amazing

While you can do your homework or ask a travel agent to do it for you, it’s a necessary evil to closely monitor cruise line pricing to “catch” a deal with a reduced single supplement.

It does happen on occasion. When faced with a plethora of unsold cabins on a particular sailing, a cruise line will reduce the supplement anywhere from 175% down to 25%. They do this to fill the ship. A less than full ship means less tips for their crew, less onboard revenue for the ship.

Until Norwegian Epic was launched in 2010, there was no option for the solo cruise passenger but to reserve a double occupancy cabin and pay the prevailing rate. Then came forward-thinking Norwegian Cruise Lines and their very innovative studio cabins.

Weighing in at a “whopping” 100 square feet, it sure sounds like it’s way too small for anything but a walk-in closet.

Not so. Devised by an actual yacht design company, the one hundred and twenty-eight Studio cabins feature a full-size bed, flat panel TV, a “window” to the corridor (they are all inside staterooms), a desk, sink, shower and separate lavatory. There is ample storage space, too. Take a tour with me…

One really cool feature of the Studio Stateroom is the private key-card access to the two-story Studio Lounge. Comfortably furnished with plush sofas and chairs, you can enjoy 24 hour self-service coffee machine, watch TV or have an cocktail during their own exclusive “Happy Hour.”

NCL Epic Studio Lounge

The Studio Lounge is a big reason to try this solo experience. That, and just staying in something so unique and kitsch as the Studios. But book early. The Studios have become very popular and with only 128 of them, they sell out seriously fast. Especially if you don’t want one with an adjoining door.

Besides the Norwegian Epic, the newer Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Escape also have Studio Staterooms with 59, 59 and 82, respectively.

Hi Mike, Your questions are very serious ones so I suggest that you or your travel agent contact the cruise line directly. Their phone number is 1-800-327-7030. If needed, ask for a supervisor to confirm. My feeling is that for medical reasons you would be allowed to bring the water needed for your machine and possibly they could bring in a portable refrigerator. Keep in mind that the solo staterooms are super small and there may not be enough space for a refrigerator. Sometimes it’s less expensive to pay the single supplement on a double occupancy stateroom than for a studio. Please call the cruise line to confirm the equipment and water. I’d hate to give out incorrect information. Thank you for sharing your important question. Sherry

Layout (floor plan), the haven 2-bedroom family villa, the haven penthouse suite, the haven spa suite, club balcony mini-suite.

In 2020, NCL recategorized fleetwide the Mini-Suite cabin category, renaming it to "Club Balcony Suite" and adding free perks. The change didn't affect the staterooms' deck locations or cabin numbers.

NCL's Club Balcony Suite's new (bonus) amenities include pre-booking onboard dining and entertainment 125 days prior departure, room service (food-beverage delivery twice per cruise), free laundry service (1x bag) and pressing service (once per cruise), Welcome Aboard gift (1x bottle of sparkling wine).

On Norwegian Epic, the Club Balcony Suite category was introduced on November 8.

Of all NCL Epic cabins, 75 are located in the signature all-suite complex “The Haven”. The Epic cruise ship has the world's largest number of Studio rooms (single-occupancy cabins for solo travelers) available for booking – a total of 128 studios. The ship is also unique with the lack of any Oceanview cabins (outside staterooms with Picture Window or Porthole Window). The number of all cabin categories is 38.

Follows the review of NCL Norwegian Epic staterooms as amenities, furniture and included (complimentary) services:

All staterooms as amenities feature sleeping area with standard twin/single beds (convertible to Queen-size double bed, with leather headboard and above-bed, lighted recess), en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, sink, shower stall, bath products, hairdryer), lounge/sitting area (full-size wardrobe, vanity area, ample storage space), smart HDTV (26-inch, infotainment system, with recessed under TV nook), electronic safe box and life jackets (in the closet), mini-refrigerator, direct-dial phone, writing desk with 4 power outlets (2 American, 2 European), individual air-conditioning, keycard access (lighting control).

The highest grades NCL Epic accommodations are The Haven suites. Guest in those suites can enjoy exclusive access to the ship’s Courtyard (relaxation complex) with its own swimming pool and whirlpool, sundeck (sunbathing area) and a private fitness center.

Suite guests also have Exclusive Lounge access (The Haven Lounge, The Epic Club, Concierge Lounge) and Courtyard valet service. The list of special perks for suite guests (bonus amenities) includes: key card access, butler / concierge service (luggage unpacking, suites-only room service menu, in-room dining /full breakfast menu and afternoon treats), luxury bedding sets (pillow menu, deluxe mattresses), welcome gifts (Champagne, bottled water, fruits, flowers), espresso coffee maker, complimentary specialty restaurant dining (breakfast and lunch only), cotton bathrobes, slippers, terry towels, priority services (embarkation, disembarkation, ports of call tender boarding).

All suites and balcony cabins have sliding doors opening to a private veranda.

  • The Haven Owners Suites (category H2) have floor-ceiling windows, separate bedroom (king bed) and dining area.
  • The Haven Courtyard Villas (category H4), offer a master bedroom (queen bed), a separate kids bedroom, combined lounge room/dining area, 2 bathrooms. The larger (main) bathroom is facing forward (overlooking the bow). Forward-facing villa suites have a separate solarium room. This is a glass-enclosed balcony room overlooking the ship’s bow. Weather permitting, the solarium’s sliding windows can be opened. Suite solariums are air-conditioned (with a thermostat) and furnished with 2 lounge chairs and a small round table.
  • Each of The Haven Courtyard Penthouse suite accommodations has a large bedroom featuring a circular queen bed, TV (CD/DVD player, library), bathroom (separate bathtub/shower) and a large-sized balcony/terrace (with 2 chairs and a small round table).
  • The Haven Suites (categories H6 and H9) feature uniquely curved walls. Of those, Spa Suites (category H9) have an in-room bathtub, dome ceiling, individually controlled colored lighting, round-shaped bed.

Mini-Suites have 2 twin beds (convertible to queen), and also feature curved walls. Family suites (categories M2, M3 and M4) have 1 upper berth plus single sofa bed. Spa suites (category M9) feature dome ceiling, individually controlled colored lighting, bathtub.

Balcony cabins in deluxe categories are with curved walls (aka “wave balcony”). Family balcony cabins (categories B2, B3 and B4) are with a location closer to the kids' area and additionally have sofa beds. Know, that all forward-facing balconies on each of the decks are with an in-hull design.

All Spa cabins (in categories H9-The Haven Spa Suite, M9-Spa Suite, and B9-Spa Balcony) have key-card access to Mandara Spa and the Fitness Center, plus 24-hour Thermal Suite access. Spa Balcony rooms are similar to the Deluxe (“wave”) Balcony cabins and feature tub/shower bathrooms, separate lounge area with mini-bar, flat TV, coffee maker, spa amenities.

NCl Epic's Studios are designed for single passengers and are available for booking as single occupancy cruise cabins. Each one of these special category staterooms has a queen bed (full size), corridor window view, mood/special lightning. Special amenities are the exclusive access to the Studio Lounge (2-tiered private lounge for Studio guests only, with bar service, large TVs, ample seating.

Since May 2015, the Norwegian Cruise Line charges US$7,95 for room service dining. This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the NCL Epic ship). Passengers exempted from the new (uncommon for the industry) room service fee are only the occupants of “The Haven” suites. Still, as an exception, all passengers can order (for free) their room-service morning coffee and Continental Breakfast. After implementing the new service charge, NCL upgraded the room service menu, adding more hot food items for Breakfast and a wider food & drinks selection (available for ordering 24 hours a day).

Cruise Norwegian: EPIC Solo Studio and Solo Lounge Review

NCL EPIC cruise ship

When I travel solo on a cruise, after the anger of the 200% fare wears off, I tend to overschedule myself to remain busy in the day and forget I’m alone on a ship of over two (or four) thousand people. It’s easy to blend in and become invisible if you want. At night, I would join a shared dinner table to meet new people and listen to their amazing stories of interesting lives lived. If I was lucky, I would get adopted by folks who took pity on me for being alone ( travel without a husband ?! of course). Being adopted has worked out well over the years, until now as Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) has drastically changed the solo cruise traveler experience (it’s about time!) with the EPIC Solo Studio cabin.

NCL EPIC cruise ship

In 2010 (hard to believe it was so long ago), Norwegian took the bold step of creating solo cabins , called studios, on their new ship the EPIC (and since then on other ships). Going a step further than just making a smaller room (100 sq ft) for one person and not subjecting them to the single supplement (be careful here as the studios often price higher than an inside or oceanview with the single supplement applied), Norwegian also created the Studio Lounge as a special gathering place to eat, work, play while onboard.

The NCL EPIC Studios and Studio Lounge is a separate area within the ship (all inside cabins – no outside view or balcony rooms) located on Deck 11 and 12 (with an interior stairwell) accessed only by those staying in the studios (although the Happy Hour is accessible by knocking on the main lounge door). The studios are generally a very popular category and sell out quickly with each sailing so book early.  If you are a first-time cruiser, read my cruise tips and budget considerations before you book.

The NCL EPIC Solo Studio Cabin

I was not able to book a studio cabin for the repositioning cruise to Barcelona on the EPIC as they were sold out but was able to tour the room (via the Cruise Critic Cabin Crawl ). I was surprised by the space expecting it to feel small and claustrophobic, but it was designed so well that it felt a perfect size for one person. On the EPIC the bathroom has been split into a separate shower and water closet with the sink in the room (not my favorite configuration). Most of the cabins are like this except for The Haven, which is a separate, luxury space with private access and exclusive benefits – they have amazing bathrooms!

Here’s the video of the room

NCL Solo Studio Cabin Tour

You do have a porthole window that looks into the hallway to provide a bit of light (don’t worry no one can see in). The Studio Cabin does not have a minibar/refrigerator (with the lounge there’s no need).

The NCL EPIC Studio Lounge (Solo Lounge or Living Room)

The Studio Lounge is open to those staying in the 128 studios. At night, it opens up to host a Solo Gathering at 5pm for all solo travelers. There is as a dedicated crew member who plans on board activities such as happy hour games (who doesn’t want to win a pen or a t-shirt?), shared meals and events. A note is posted on the board each day and if interested you just sign up. I saw many options to keep busy throughout the cruise in addition to the regular cruise activities for all. While you could eat, drink or see a show alone, bowling or ice bar (crazy people who pay to don a parka and drink vodka in a cold room of ice) is better with other people, in my opinion.

NCL EPIC solo lounge living room

The NCL Solo Lounge has a bar that is staffed at happy hour, a self-service coffee area and a cookie jar. The lounge also has several seating area configurations, a high-top table and flat screen TVs to watch a game. The great feature is that you can choose to participate, there is no pressure, it’s your cruise and you figure out what’s best for you. You might be staying alone but that doesn’t mean you are traveling alone – your friends or family may be elsewhere on the ship and the studios offer you the opportunity to cruise with them without the added costs as well as a private space to decompress if you want (did I mention the cookie jar and coffee machine?).

My Studio (Solo) Lounge Experience

During my cruise, every day at 5pm, my friend and I visited the lounge and because it was a repositioning cruise, the mix (and amount) of people was different from a normal cruise I was told. Generally, those staying in the studios tend to do many activities together. This cruise was a mixed bag of ages and travel experiences – while it tended to be older and retired given the type (repositioning, no ports) and length (11 days) of cruise, there were many young (under 40) travelers too. I met backpackers, Camino de Santiago walkers, parents on the way to Pakistan, Geneva and London to visit their kids and grandchildren. I watched men act like children with one man’s toupee, trying it on and remembering when they had hair (lots of laughter and lots of photos) both young and old. I watched the single guys chat up the single girls and I watched the guy in the corner reading a book alone. The lounge offers a nice getaway from the smaller studio cabin for both more space and more opportunity to connect (if you want).

Solo Lounge NCL Epic Solo Studio

The Verdict – NCL EPIC Solo Studio

I’d happily stay in an EPIC Solo studio cabin for a cruise if the itinerary (and pricing) was good and love the solo gathering each night. I met amazing people in the studio lounge at the happy hour that I then met for dinner, a show or drinks later (plus a few new Facebook friends). I didn’t need to be adopted by anyone and no one took pity on me which was a nice change. The general consensus has been surprise at how busy we all are on this cruise which I attribute to the solo lounge and studio cabins. I never got to read my books or sleep in a lounge chair on deck – I was too busy having fun with other solo travelers and that was EPIC .  So now the question is – where do I go next?

Have you tried a Norwegian studio cabin yet or have you considered it? What about the studio lounge? What did you think?

Thanks for this great look at solo cruising Norwegian-style, Suzanne. It looks like an ideal way to cater to solo cruisers. I often meet and team up with people on my cruises, but having a dedicated lounge to socialize with other single cruisers would be a big help, and add a lot of fun to the cruise. And who wants to pay the single supplement — but how does the pricing for the studio cabins compare to regular per-person cabin rates?

Paul – for the transatlantic, the solo rooms were about $429 if I remember and the regular room $399 pp with 200% single supplement. I’ve found that they are priced a bit more than the inside double room rate but they sell out quickly. Knowing that I can use the lounge without staying in the solo rooms was a bonus – sadly the EPIC food was horrible so I’d try a different ship hoping for better food.

The food was far from horrible I don’t know what you eat in this case. I’d be interested to know what you didn’t like?

Hi Eileen – I’m glad you enjoyed the food on EPIC and had a better experience than I did. I didn’t write about the food on this cruise because I had hoped it was a one-off. I spoke with a travel agent friend who sails NCL exclusively throughout the year for more than 10 years and he seemed to think it was a one off too. My comment on the food to Paul from Canada below (who is an avid cruiser who enjoys food) was a consensus from the experienced cruisers on this particular transatlantic EPIC cruise that the food (and service) was bad. We all complained on the ship, in the response cards and after the cruise. We have all traveled other ships/lines/itineraries and usually a transatlantic is when the ships flip to a new crew and there are usually a few blips that we all anticipated but we had unusual encounters/incidents. There was really a long list at the time. It was almost a mutiny!

Sorry to hear that, don’t know what TA you were on, I was on the Epic in Nov and it was great but I totally understand your situation and I would have been peved off too in your circumstance too. Don’t let one cruise put you off

I have a deposit on a 16 night transatlantic cruise on the Getaway march 2017….staying in a solo studio cabin…. I am excited about this cruise as i have never done a transatlantic cruise before….my question is am i going to feel too confining staying in a studio cabin, for that length of time….I understand that the room is only 100 square feet… but a lady that i do know say they are perfect for one person…she always says in a studio cabin…..I would like your suggestion on this….. as i have never stayed in a studio cabin before…but i have been on rcl majesty of the seas in their inside cabin and their cabins are only 114 square feet…so there could not be that much of a difference…plus ncl studio cabins are much more modern

If you have stayed on an inside cabin then the studio won’t be much of a change. I think that for the most part you are in the room to sleep, shower, change and it works well for a solo traveler. That said, you need to feel comfortable on your trip and within your budget – this might mean you do an inside for the cruise, usually at 200%, and ask to view the studio cabin for the future or you do the studio room now and use the savings for on board fun.

I have a solo cabin December 2nd. I do not know anyone on the ship so hopefully people will chat

Sharon – unless you are hiding out, you will definitely find people to chat with. I loved that there is a social director in the Studio Lounge who arranges group dinners and fun for those who want to participate. Plus each night there is usually a happy hour to meet other solo travelers in addition to lounge time. For friends and clients, I’ve found that they really enjoyed the cruise and solo cabins. I’d also suggest outside of the solo lounge joining a quiz group or other activity – I did that and met lovely folks that were couples and groups. Plus I had a standing appointment on sea days for fun – enjoy!

Interesting! Big cruise ships aren’t really my jam, so I didn’t know these solo cabins existed. The price seems really good for such a long trip, though!

Aw, this sounds like such a fun experience! I’ve never been on a cruise of any kind, so I’ll have to add it to my to-do list.

This is such an amazing idea by Norwegian, I’ve never even heard of this. So cool they saw an issue and met the need. It looks so fun and I would have never considered it. Love the lounge idea too, so you could organically meet people 🙂 Thanks for sharing this!!

I’ve never been on a cruise myself, but do know people who are into them, go solo and often struggle to meet new people. Good on NCL for figuring out a solution to that problem.

I am booked on the Epic for a Mediterranean cruise in October 2017. Being a middle-aged single woman, I am nervous doing Europe on my own, but love the idea of the studio cabins and I hope to be able to make some friends on board! Can’t wait to check out the lounge!

Marie – what a fabulous trip to look forward to! What’s great about a cruise is that you can choose to tour solo, join a private group (check out the cruise critic board for your cruise), do a ship tour or find new friends onboard to travel together. I love the diversity of choice and love Europe! I’ve booked clients on the EPIC solo and they loved it, I’m sure you will too!

I’m also a middle aged lady & I traveled alone on a cruise for the first time in April, and was thrilled with the solo travelers group. We had so much fun at the happy hours, couples started joining us on a daily basis. (There was no studio area- smaller, older ship)

Hi, thanks so much for this post. The solo cabins sound great! Did you find that the lounge was loud at night or made it hard to sleep? How late did people generally spend time there? Thanks!

The lounge noise will depend but generally it was quiet except during happy hour events. Since the lounge is at the end of the studio cabins behind a door, the location of your cabin will help avoid any noise including the door open/close. The lounge has a few tvs, bar area, lounge seating and a few vending machines open only to those staying in the studios. Plus a coffee station.

Is the Happy Hour in the Studio Lounge a per drink charge? Looks like wine dispensers on some ships – any idea the price? Trying to decide if should add the Open Bar option but only drink one soda and one glass of wine per day (maybe one extra glass of wine at dinner) …

Norwegian Epic – Cabins: Honest Reviews and Cabins to Avoid

In this post, we will look at all cabin grades available onboard the Norwegian Epic. I cruised in the Norwegian Epic in an inside cabin and had family members staying in a balcony cabin.

The Norwegian Epic’s cabins are some of the most controversial.

The bathroom design is unlike any other and I personally quite liked it, lots of people don’t though so make sure you’re happy with the below before booking.

In this post we explore:

  • Inside Cabins
  • Balcony Cabins
  • Solo Cabins

We will also look at cabins to avoid.

The Norwegian Epic was built in 2009 and the cabins have remained largely unchanged during this time.

How Many Cabins Are on The Norwegian Epic?

The Norwegian Epic has 1912 cabins, 128 of which are studio cabins designed for solo cruisers. 75 of the cabins are located in the Haven.

For a cruise ship to have over 100 solo cabins is incredibly high. On many cruise ships, you’ll find as little as 10-20 solo cabins.

The Bathrooms on The Norwegian Epic Have a Unique Design

If you are considering a cruise on the Norwegian Epic it’s important that you are happy with the bathroom situation. Norwegian have created a unique bathroom that isn’t replicated on any of their other ships.

In a usual cruise ship cabin, you’ll find the bathroom in the corner of the room. In the bathroom, you’ll usually find the toilet, sink, and shower. On the Norwegian Epic, you’ll find the shower in one room in the corner of the cabin and a toilet in a little room on the other. The sink is within the main cabin and there is a privacy curtain.

The below diagram shows the design on the Norwegian Epic.

Note: The edges of the rooms are curved, but you get the idea.

Norwegian Epic Bathroom Diagram Toilet Shower and Sink

I was cruising with my brother and I didn’t mind the unique bathroom design at all.

That said, lots of people don’t like it and I can understand why. If you were cruising with a friend it would be a little strange to step out into the cabin after a shower with only a curtain between you and your friend.

It was a little weird to have the main sink in the cabin because if somebody wanted to brush their teeth or have a shave they would just be stood in the main cabin, which was a little odd but not a big problem.

Norwegian Epic Inside Cabins:

Sleeps Up To 4

We stayed in an inside cabin on deck 10. The inside cabins on decks 8,9,10,11 and 12  only sleep 2 people but the inside cabins on 13,14 can sleep up to 4 people. If the cabin sleeps 4 these will be pull-down beds from the ceiling.

It can be quite a squeeze to share a cabin with 2 or 3 other people but it is doable and I have done it in the past.

The drop-down beds, called Pullman beds, are most commonly used for children although they do accommodate adults too.

If you’re particularly tall your feet may hang off the end though and there are weight limits! I have shared a cabin with 3 other adults before, it isn’t ideal but for a short cruise it isn’t a problem.

norwegian epic cabin bathroom review

The Inside Cabins Are Quite Small – Coming in at 11m 2

The inside cabins start at 11m 2 and the average within the cruise industry is 15m 2 . In many inside cabins, you’ll find a separate chair, or possibly even a small sofa. In the Norwegian Epic cabins, the beds take up the majority of the room with no extra seating area.

I never felt that the cabin was too small and didn’t feel claustrophobic inside.

The clever design of the cabin means that even though it is small, there’s plenty of floor space and storage space.

What I Loved About my Inside Cabin on The Norwegian Epic:

  • The cabin had a lot of storage
  • The floor space felt large
  • I love the overall design and curved lines
  • The bed was very comfortable

In ALMOST all cabins the beds can either be arranged as a twin or as a double bed. If you arrive and the beds aren’t set up how you’d like, just let your cabin steward know and they’ll change these for you.

A couple of friends of mine didn’t realize that the beds separated and they ended up sharing a bed for an entire week, without wanting to.

norwegian epic inside cabin review

The Cabin Has Lots of Storage

On one side, there is a large closet that has hanging space and drawers too. On the inside door of the closet, there are a few baskets for small pieces like accessories.

My suitcase fit well at the bottom of the closet but it would also have fit under the bed in the cabin.

Our life jackets were inside the closet as was safe. The safe is free to use and you set your own code when you use the safe for the first time.

Do The Cabins on The Norwegian Epic have TVs?

All cabins on the Norwegian Epic have TV’s installed. In the majority of cabins, these are mounted up high.

Do The Cabins on The Norwegian Epic have Kettles?

The cabins on the Norwegian Epic do not have kettles. Tea and Coffee is available in the buffet free of charge and is available in many other bars and lounges at a cost.

Norwegian Epic Balcony Cabins

Sleeps Up To 4 (Most Balcony Cabins Have a Maximum Capacity of 3)

During my cruise on the Norwegian Epic, I had family members staying in a standard balcony cabin and I spent a lot of my time here.

If you are cruising as a group it can sometimes be worth just purchasing one balcony to save money, you’ll probably spend the majority of your time in one cabin anyway.

The Norwegian Epic had 4 types of balcony cabins available. The standard cabin, family cabin which can accommodate an extra person, a large balcony which is slightly larger, and a spa balcony that provides extra spa benefits.

The Balcony Cabins are Average Size – Coming in at 17m 2

The average size of a balcony cabin is 18m 2 , the balcony cabins on the Norwegian Epic come in just under this at 17m 2 .

The shape of the balcony cabins are quite different from other cabins, the walls are curved. Some cruise ship cabins will have slightly curved walls but the curve (seen below) is quite prominent.

This works because the cabins are a mirror image of each other and sometimes the bed is closer to the window and sometimes closer to the bathroom.

Norwegian Epic Balcony Cabin Review Bathroom

What is in the Balcony cabins on board the Norwegain Epic?

  • Twin/Queen beds
  • A desk with mirror + chair
  • Bedside tables

The balcony cabins onboard are very similar in style to the inside cabins. The sofa area seen in the middle is just an extra addition that the inside cabins don’t have.

Large Balcony Cabins

Sleeps Up To 3

The large balcony is exactly the same as the regular balcony but it is slightly larger. Despite being larger the cabin still can only accommodate 3 passengers.

Family Balcony Cabin

The family balcony cabins on the Norwegian Epic are almost identical to the standard cabins. The only real difference is that there is space to accommodate a 4th person.

The sofa changes into a bed and a Pullman bed comes down from the ceiling, this creates bunk beds of sorts for guests 3 and 4.

Norwegian Epic Balcony Cabin Review

I stayed in an inside cabin during my Norwegian Epic cruise but my mum stayed in a balcony cabin and had the following to say:

“I’ve read many bad reviews about balcony cabins on the Norwegian Epic but for me, it was one of the most memorable balcony cabins I have stayed in.  So much more interesting than your standard, oblong, cruise ship cabin . I loved the curved walls, and the interesting ceilings!” Gaynor (my mum)

Norwegian Epic Solo Cabins

The Norwegian Epic has 128 solo cabins and the solo cabins also have access to a solo lounge. All the solo cabins are located together in an area of the ship reserved for solo cruisers which I like.

The design of the solo cabins is very similar to that of the regular cabins.

All of the solo cabins are inside cabins but they do have windows to the corridor outside, these are one way mirrors so other guests can’t see into your room, but you can see out.

A friend of mine Pete cruised solo on the Norwegian Epic, in his video review he explores the room in detail:

If you are considering cruising Solo start by reading this post, it details my personal favorite cruise lines for solo cruising. Norwegian are on the list along with many others. Best Cruise Lines For Solo Cruisers (Tried and Tested Pros and Cons).

Do The Cabins on The Norwegian Epic have Hairdryers?

All cabins on the Norwegian Epic have hairdryers, there is no need to bring your own.

I found the hairdryer to be good and powerful.

Top tip: If it isn’t powerful enough to dry your hair, a trip to the top deck is usually enough to do it if it’s windy! It might not be a look you want to go for… but it works.

What plug sockets are on the Norwegian Epic?

All cabins on the Norwegian Epic have at least 2 US plug sockets, 1 European socket, and 2 USB sockets.

If you are ever in doubt about which plug sockets a cruise ship has, check out this post.

I scoured through hundreds of photos and videos to put together a searchable table >> Complete Cruise Ship Plug Socket Guide: Search by Ship (it might be worth favoriting that page for the next time you need it).

Do The Cabins on The Norwegian Epic have Irons?

None of the cabins on the Norwegian Epic have irons. There isn’t a self-service laundry so if you do need something ironed you would have to pay for this. An alternative is to buy a spray that drops the creases from clothes.

To find out more about Norwegian’s laundry prices and options, read this post: Norwegian Cruise Line Laundry – Price List, Services, and Packages

Norwegian Epic – Suites

The Norwegian Epic has a range of suites available, these are located in an area called the Haven.

The below is a summary:

Cabins booked in the Haven have access to the following perks:

  • A private pool deck and swimming pool.
  • A private restaurant.
  • A private lounge.
  • Unlimited beverage package as standard.
  • 24/7 butler.

For more information about the suites available on Norwegian Epic visit the Norwegian website here: Norwegian Epic Suites.

Norwegian Epic – Cabins to Avoid

The following cabins to avoid were provided by guests who cruised in these cabins. I haven’t personally stayed in any of these cabins.

Note: Many cruise ships will have cabins near the theatre or main lounges. The cabins are all on the higher decks on the Norwegian Epic so there are fewer cabins to avoid than you may find on other ships.

If you are worried about noise, booking a cabin that’s between two other decks of cabins is usually the best idea.

Norwegian Epic, Cabins to Avoid – Deck 14

The following cabins towards the aft of deck 14 onboard Norwegian Epic are directly below the buffet. Some cruisers staying in these cabins have reported noises of things like chairs being moved.

This shouldn’t be a big problem as the buffet isn’t open late into the night but it may be worth something to bear in mind.

Norwegian Epic cabins to avoid

If you are somebody who makes frequent trips to the buffet like me, these cabins could be a good idea.

All cabins on deck 14 are under the main sun deck of the ship. It isn’t abnormal to hear noises of sunloungers being moved or music from the pool deck. This noise usually doesn’t go on late, but the cabins on lower decks will be quieter.

Norwegian Epic, Cabins to Avoid – Deck 9

The below cabins are a little bit strange.

They are great if you struggle with mobility and need to be near an elevator but due to their proximity to the stairs and elevators, a number of past cruisers have suggested that these cabins should be cabins to avoid.

norwegian epic cabins to avoid

(The crosses in boxes are elevators and the stripey rectangles are the stairs).

There are also a couple of cabins like this on deck 8.

Norwegian Epic, Cabins to Avoid – Deck 8

The below cabins on deck 8 are directly under the Bliss Ultra Lounge. The bliss ultra lounge is used as a nightclub at night so it is likely that there will be some noise carrying up to the cabins on deck 8.

The Bliss Ultra Lounge is open until late in the evening. It usually becomes adult only at 11 pm.

Everything you want to know about cabins and suites on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

Gene Sloan

Picking a cabin on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship isn't always easy.

For starters, there are a huge number of cabins available on some Norwegian ships. The line is known for operating some of the world's biggest cruise vessels — ships so big that some have more than 2,000 cabins each.

However, it's not just the sheer volume of cabins that makes choosing a room on a Norwegian ship a challenge. It's also the number of cabin categories.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

On some of Norwegian's largest ships, including Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, there are a whopping 39 different types of cabins — each a little different from the last.

The backstory here is that Norwegian ships are designed to appeal to a wide demographic, including travelers willing to spend at a wide range of price points. That's prompted Norwegian to offer a wide mix of cabin types.

The room choices the line offers on its ships range from relatively low-cost, windowless inside cabins measuring just 135 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to massive, multi-room suites that can be more than 50 times that size.

At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to being on a luxury ship, and they truly are among the most spectacular accommodations at sea. Some, such as the giant Garden Villas found on six Norwegian ships — Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star — sprawl over thousands of square feet and have as many as three bedrooms plus separate living rooms and dining rooms.

A Norwegian Cruise Line cabin primer

norwegian cruise line epic single cabins

As is typical for many cruise ships, Norwegian vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless "inside" cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

On newer Norwegian ships, the majority of the cabins are balcony cabins. Cruise lines over the years have discovered that cruisers will pay a significant premium to have a balcony with their cabin, and that's prompted a rush to add more balcony cabins to ships.

However, Norwegian's newer vessels are also known for a large number of suites, including suites that are part of upscale private complexes called The Haven.

On Norwegian's 4-year-old Norwegian Encore, for instance, 19% of the 2,040 cabins are suites — a huge percentage for a large, mass-market cruise ship. On Royal Caribbean 's 4-year-old Symphony of the Seas, which launched at almost the same time as Norwegian Encore, by contrast, just 7% of cabins are suites. On Carnival Cruise Line 's 4-year-old Carnival Panorama, just 3% of cabins are suites.

Here is a breakdown of the cabin types on Norwegian Encore, which is typical for the line's newer ships:

Inside cabins: 453 (22%). Ocean-view cabins: 111 (5%). Balcony cabins: 1,090 (53%). Suites: 385 (19%).

On older Norwegian ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are fewer suites — sometimes far fewer. Only 1% of the cabins on Norwegian's oldest vessel, the 1998-built Norwegian Spirit, are balcony cabins.

Inside cabins and oceanview cabins make up nearly half of all cabins on Norwegian Spirit. Here is a breakdown of the cabins on that vessel:

Inside cabins: 387 (29%). Ocean-view cabins: 223 (17%). Balcony cabins: 708 (58%). Suites: 18 (1%).

The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a suite on an older Norwegian ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a suite is a must, you'll want to book early to make sure you get one.

Within each of the four broad categories of cabins on Norwegian ships, you'll find multiple subcategories. Norwegian Encore, for instance, has 16 different types of suites alone, from a Club Balcony Suite Guarantee (Category MX) that measures 249 square feet to The Haven Deluxe Owner's Suite with Large Balcony (Category H2) that measures nearly six times that amount.

In general, Norwegian cabins have a modern look with clean lines and contemporary furniture, plus lots of storage cleverly worked into the design.

Inside cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

These are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On any Norwegian ship, they are almost always the least expensive option when you're booking a cabin, and you can often save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world. In some cases, you'll find an inside cabin with a window opening up onto a hallway, but the view will be of nothing more than the hallway.

You'll also be in a very small room. Most inside cabins on the ship used in the examples above, Norwegian Encore, measure just 149 square feet. That's about 7% smaller than the typical ocean-view cabin on the vessel, which measures 160 square feet. The typical balcony cabin on Norwegian Encore is 175 square feet, not including a 30- to 110-square-foot balcony.

Related: Why windowless inside cabins aren't so bad

Of note, Norwegian is well-known for one particular type of inside cabin: unusually tiny, interior studio cabins designed for solo travelers.

Norwegian first added such cabins to a ship in 2010, on the then-new, 4,070-passenger Norwegian Epic. They were such a hit the line quickly began adding them to more vessels.

norwegian cruise line epic single cabins

Measuring just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic (there are 128 in all) are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge with a bar and television area where solos can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Since 2010, Norwegian has added similar solo cabin complexes with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships. Norwegian Encore has an 82-cabin solo complex spread over three decks.

The similarly sized Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss also have 82-cabin solo complexes, while the smaller Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway have solo areas with 59 cabins. The line's two newest ships, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , have 73 solo cabins.

Related: I've been on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii- based Pride of America.

In most cases, these studio cabins have windows that face an interior hallway, though some solo cabins have windows and balconies.

Ocean-view cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Norwegian's newer ships have relatively few such cabins, as generally cabins that face outward are now built with balconies.

In general, ocean-view cabins on Norwegian ships are bigger than inside cabins but not quite as big as balcony cabins (when comparing their interior space). However, you sometimes can find ocean-view cabins that are significantly bigger than what is typical for a balcony cabin. This is sometimes the case for ocean-view cabins at the front of ships, where there can be relatively large but odd-shaped rooms with windows but no balconies.

Several recent Norwegian vessels have some quite large ocean-view cabins at their fronts that measure from 240 to 372 square feet. Dubbed Family Oceanview Stateroom with Large Picture Window, they are designed to hold up to five people and are marketed to families.

Balcony cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Norwegian is delivering with huge numbers of balcony cabins on all its newest ships.

On the line's new Prima-class ships, which began debuting in 2022, around 57% of rooms are balcony cabins — and that number jumps even higher if you include suites on the ship that have balconies (see below for more details on suites on Norwegian vessels).

Including suites, the percentage of cabins on the first two ships in the series to debut (Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva) that have balconies jumps to 64%. The percentage is even higher on the line's newest Breakaway-plus class vessels, at a very high 72%.

norwegian cruise line epic single cabins

The typical Norwegian balcony cabin has a contemporary look with clean lines and relatively minimalist furniture. Norwegian balcony cabins typically offer twin beds that can be converted into a queen bed, a built-in desk area and a sofa that often pulls out into an additional bed.

Balcony cabins on Norwegian ships typically measure a bit over 200 square feet, including the balcony space, but some can be significantly bigger.

On Norwegian Encore, a category of balcony cabins known as Large Balcony cabins (category B6) measure 331 square feet, due to enormous balconies that measure 155 square feet. The ship also offers aft-facing balconies (category B1) that measure up to 426 square feet, again due to unusually large balconies.

Suites on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

As mentioned above, Norwegian is known for a large number of suites on its ships. It's also known for some of the very biggest suites in the entire cruise industry.

The Garden Villas found on Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star are truly stunning, with living areas with glass walls looking over the pool areas of the ships. They have as many as three bedrooms plus separate living rooms and dining rooms.

Some of the Garden Villas measure as much as 6,694 square feet — more than twice the size of the typical home in the United States.

norwegian cruise line epic single cabins

Among notable extras, the Garden Villas have private outdoor sundecks and courtyards with hot tubs. Additionally, the Garden Villas on Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star include private outdoor dining areas and steam rooms.

On more than half of Norwegian's ships, many of the top suites are part of an exclusive, keycard-accessed area called The Haven. Aimed at luxury travelers, The Haven complexes are located at the very top of the vessels and often come with private lounges, pools, sunning areas and even restaurants.

Related: 7 reasons to splurge on a cruise ship suite

norwegian cruise line epic single cabins

Depending on the ship, top suites can come with such perks as private butlers and concierges who attend to your every need; access to a private restaurant; a private suite lounge and sun deck; reserved seating in entertainment venues; and priority boarding and disembarkation.

Just be ready to look through a lot of suite types if you're booking a Norwegian ship. Some Norwegian ships have up to four types of Penthouse suites available, for instance, and three kinds of family suites.

Bottom line

Norwegian has something for everyone when it comes to cabins on its ships.

You can book a small, inside cabin that will get you on board one of the line's vessels at a very reasonable cost or a super suite that will set you back many times more but that comes with all sorts of perks.
