Milan, Italy has a modern public transportation system that connects almost all areas of the city, as well as its airports, via a combination of subway lines, trams and buses. The city has five main  train  stations, four Metro (subway) lines, and an extensive tram network. There's also a suburban rail system that reaches the bedroom cities of Milan. Buses also ply the city, but are most useful for connecting areas outside the city center.

Visitors to Milan intent on sightseeing will be able to get just about anywhere they need to go by way of tram or Metro. Metro is the fastest option, but many travelers prefer trams, in part because they can see where they're going on the above-ground tram cars.

How to Use Public Transit in Milan

Milan's public transportation services are run by Azienda Trasporti Milanese , or ATM for short. The ATM website has an English-language component, system maps and a route finder tool that lets you chart the best path from points A to B. ATM has an app, ATM Milano Official App , available for smartphones or Apple, that allows you to buy tickets and travel passes and access the system map.

Here are some basic how-tos for using public transportation in Milan:

• Milan has four subway lines, called Metropolitana (Metro for short) and identified by signs with a bold "M" and the background color representing the respective lines. The four lines are Line (linea) 1, the red line, Line 2, the green line, Line 3, the yellow line and Line 5, the purple (or lilac) line. Some of the suburban rail lines crisscross the city and are shown in blue on maps.
• Fares are determined by zone, with a simple ticket covering zones Mi1 to Mi3, the core of Milan and where virtually all attractions, shopping areas, main train stations, and tourist hotels are located.
• As of October 2020, tickets for Metro, trams, buses and suburban rail lines within zones Mi1-Mi3 cost €2 and are good for 90 minutes, including transfers.
• One and 3-day passes good for unlimited rides in zones Mi1-Mi3 cost €7 and €12, respectively.
• The Milano Card travel pass, priced at €11 for 24 hours, €17 for 48 hours or €19.5 for 72 hours, includes unlimited public transportation access plus free or deeply discounted access to several major museums and attractions.
• Tickets can be purchased in Metro stations, at tabacchi (tobacco shops) and newsstands, or via the mobile app. Note that most tabacchi and newsstand vendors will only accept cash for tickets.
• On Metro, you need either your ticket or QR code (if you're using the mobile app) to enter and exit the train platforms. On buses and trams, you need to stamp your ticket in one of the machines when you board the vehicle.
• The Metro system is largely accessible to wheelchair users and the physically impaired, with escalators, elevators and in some stations, stairlifts to allow passengers to reach the trains. Public Transportation Hours of Operation

• Metro runs Monday to Saturday from 5.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. On Sundays and holidays, it opens at 6.00 a.m.
• Trams operate from 4.30 a.m. to 2.30 a.m.
• Buses operate from 5.30 a.m. to 1.45 a.m.
• On Christmas Day and May 1 (Labor Day), all services run from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Getting from Milan's Airports to Central Milan

Milan's largest airport is Malpensa International, located northwest of the city. Malpensa can be reached by train using the Malpensa Express (MXP) from Centrale, Garibaldi or Cadorna stations. Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the airport or train station, or via the ATM mobile app.

Malpensa is also served by bus service to and from Milano Centrale. Malpensa Shuttle departs every 20 minutes. Shuttles also connect Malpensa to the smaller Linate Airport east of Milan.

Getting Around Milan

The majority of sights in Milan are within zones Mi1 and Mi2 and are therefore easily accessible via public transport. Here are the stops for some of Milan's most popular attractions .

• The Castello Sforzesco is directly behind the Cairoli stop.
• From the Porta Venezia station, one can easily visit the Museum of Science and Technology, situated in a former monastery.
• The Conciliazione station, the first stop west of the Cadorna station, is near the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci's ''Last Supper'' can be viewed.
• From the Duomo stop, one can stroll not only the Duomo but through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele to La Scala opera house.
• To reach the popular Navigli neighborhood, head to the Porta Genova or Piazza P.za Ventiquattro Maggio stops.

Getting Out of Milan

Thanks to Milan's geographic position in Northern Italy, coupled with its extensive rail system , it's a convenient point of departure for exploring neighboring countries in Europe or for reaching the rest of Italy. EuroCity trains connect from Milano Centrale to Zurich, Geneva, Bern, and other Swiss cities, and Thello trains offer direct service to Paris' Gare de Lyon station. It's also possible to catch direct trains to Monte Carlo, Monaco, and Nice, France.

Within Italy, Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains connect to Venice , Bologna , Florence , Rome and a host of other cities.

These tickets (Mi1-Mi3 fare zones) are valid on metro lines, buses, trams, trolleybuses and are also accepted on S lines (suburban railways). You can also reach Rho Fiera on line M1 (consider the S lines as an alternative) and Assago Forum on line M2.

Where to buy tickets

Tickets can be purchased from the automatic machines located in all metro stations or at any authorised resellers ( find here the list ). You can also buy a ticket via ATM official app (read here how to validate it) or sending an SMS to 48444. 

To the city centre from Linate airport by metro line M4

The new metro line M4 connects the city centre with Linate airport.

How to reach Rho exhibition center

You can take the metro line M1 and get off at Rho Fieramilano terminal station. Alternatively, you can take the suburban S5, S6 or S11 lines from one of Milan railway stations (Porta Venezia, Porta Garibaldi or Repubblica). Either way, the Mi1-Mi3 fare is valid. If you have an urban travel pass, a 1,70€ integration is needed. You can load it on your electronic card at the automatic machines located in all metro stations or at any authorised resellers

How to reach the Unipol Forum

Take the metro line M2 and get off at Assago Forum terminal station. The Mi1-Mi3 fare is valid. If you have an urban travel pass, a 1,70€ integration is needed here too.   

How to reach Milan Convention Centre (MiCo) 

Take the metro line M 5 and get off at Portello .   

How to reach San Siro stadium

To reach the stadium get off at Lotto (interchange station between lines M1 and M5 ) or San Siro Stadio terminal station (on line M5) .

Rail replacement bus for journeys to Milan via Domodossola.

From 9 June to 8 September 2024, EuroCity trains to Milan from Basel, Bern and Geneva will only run to/from Domodossola. Some EuroCity trains between Geneva, Lausanne and Milan will be completely cancelled during this time. In addition, the section between Iselle and Domodossola will be closed from 9 to 30 August 2024. To ensure that you can still get from Switzerland to Milan, the rest of Italy and back home again, we are organising rail replacement buses together with our cooperation partner Trenitalia.

Reason for the track closures: the 4-metre corridor between Arona and Verbania is being expanded for freight traffic. A bridge between Iselle and Domodossola also needs to be renovated.

The timetables for journeys to Italy from Basel, Bern, Geneva and Lausanne via Domodossola and the journey times for the rail replacement buses have been amended in the digital timetables on SBB.ch and in the SBB Mobile app. Please note that the journey involves longer journey times and fewer seats. However, together with Trenitalia, we are doing everything we can to ensure that you arrive safely and we ask for your understanding.

• Detailed information on the rail replacement buses and their points of departure can be found by making a timetable enquiry on SBB.ch or via SBB Mobile.
• You can find specific information about trips that have already been booked on this website. For this, all you need is the date of travel and the bus number, both of which appear on the ticket.
• EuroCity rail replacement buses can be identified by the bus number ‘EC000’.
• Important information: rail replacement buses are also being organised within Italy for the regional trains between Domodossola and Milan. These can also be found in the timetable, but the information here does NOT apply to these regional rail replacement buses.

Journeys with a change in iselle and domodossola between 9 and 30 august 2024..

From 9 to 30 August 2024, the Brig–Domodossola line will also be closed along the Iselle–Domodossola section. Shuttle trains will run between Brig and Iselle and rail replacement buses will run between Iselle and Domodossola and between Domodossola and Milan. These journey times will also be longer and there will be fewer seats available. The exact rail replacement concept is currently being developed with our Italian partners and will be published on this page by 10 July at the latest. Essentially, it will look like this.

Transfer concept.

• If you are travelling to Milano Centrale via Domodossola, travel to Iselle and change to the rail replacement bus there. The bus will take you to Domodossola, where you will then have to change to the rail replacement bus for Milan.
• If you are travelling from Milano Centrale to Switzerland via Domodossola, take the rail replacement bus from Milan to Domodossola and change there to the rail replacement bus that takes you to Iselle. From there, your journey can continue by train. 
• This will extend the journey time by 30 minutes.

The bus stop in Iselle is located at the railway station itself.

How to Get More Hotel Points and Airline Miles in June 2024

Summer is here, and it’s vacation time for many families looking to get away from the grind. Points and miles can help make sure your next trip doesn’t drain your budget by putting your airline loyalty accounts, hotel memberships, and credit cards to work for you. It's a good month for travel deals—to encourage business, many companies offer seasonal promotions rewarding repeat purchases or loyalty. Below, the deals and perks you need to know about to kick off summer with a bang.

Get more value and loyalty points when flying Delta

Delta loyalists, rejoice: The airline has a couple of promotions with deadlines coming up—so act fast. First, Delta has a new promotion that lets travelers earn one (1) Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) per dollar spent when reserving hotels or car rentals through its travel portal. This offer is a great way to get closer to elite status without actually flying, and it’s available through June 24. Note that, because you’re booking hotel stays through Delta’s travel portal, you will not earn hotel points or be eligible for hotel status benefits during those stays. It is best to use this travel portal only when booking stays where you’re not looking to earn hotel points or status perks, perhaps at properties where you may not have any kind of loyalty anyway.

There’s also a special offer available until June 17 (or while supplies last) that rewards travelers with a bonus $20 Starbucks gift card when purchasing a Delta gift card worth $300 using any credit card. This could be a good way to bank cash for a future flight; Delta gift cards are easy to use and are treated like cash, meaning using a gift card to buy a plane ticket through Delta means you’re eligible to earn miles and loyalty points with the airline.

Earn more points at stays with Marriott, Choice Hotels, and Best Western

Considering a vacation rental in beach, mountain, or urban destinations this summer? Marriott Bonvoy members can earn five points per dollar spent on any Homes & Villas by Marriott booking made between now and June 26. The stay should last for a minimum of five nights and take place between now and March 31, 2025. Be sure to register for this promotion before your stay.

Through August 5, guests who complete a stay at Choice Hotels properties can earn 8,000 points (enough for a $50 gift card) after completing two qualifying stays. Travelers can earn the bonus as many as four times, but only after registering for the promotion . Choice Privileges points can be used at the brand’s portfolio of hotels, but also at Preferred Hotels & Resorts , a collection of independent luxury hotels around the world, which include The Leela Palace Udaipur in India (a Condé Nast Traveler Gold List editor’s pick) and The Fullerton Hotel Sydney in Australia.

Best Western Rewards released their summer offer with 10,000 bonus points earned after staying for three nights. Stay for another three nights, and you earn another 10,000 bonus points, capped at 20,000 points. Staying beyond six nights during the promotion unlocks another perk: double points on all stays with a weekend checkout, and triple points when checking out on a weekday (Again, be sure to register before your first stay ). This promotion is valid through September 2 at participating Best Western hotels.

Best Western’s network is larger than what you might think, including a partnership with WorldHotels, which has its own promotion this summer. Between now and September 2, members can earn up to 20,000 points when staying at WorldHotels’ independent hotels and resorts like the Alhambra Palace Hotel in Granada, Spain, and Makedonia Palace in Thessaloniki, Greece. WorldHotels Rewards members will earn 10,000 points after staying three nights at participating properties. They can earn the bonus twice, but be sure to register before your first stay .

Buy points and miles with a bonus

In addition to booking stays and taking flights, you can always just outright buy points and miles to get closer to an award redemption with a hotel or an airline. You have until June 10 to take advantage of a 70% bonus when buying Flying Blue miles, the points currency of Air France-KLM. You can use those miles to book flights with the European megacarrier or any of its partners like Delta and Virgin Atlantic.

And if you need Hyatt points, you’re in luck: World of Hyatt is offering a 20% bonus on purchased points between now and July 1. These points are well-spent for stays at places like the recently renovated Park Hyatt Milano in Milan, Italy, or the beautiful new Thompson Houston, by Hyatt that just opened earlier this year.

If you take advantage of these opportunities, note that purchases for both these bonus offers are processed through Points.com, and not directly through the airline or hotel themselves. This means you wouldn’t earn extra points for using a credit card that gives bonus spending categories for flights or hotel stays, respectively. You’re better off using a card that earns two points per dollar spent on all types of spending, like the Capital One Venture card .

Secure a status match through cruises

If cruises are part of your summer plans, consider a status match available for the Royal Caribbean Group’s trio of brands: Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises , and Silversea . If you hold elite status with one of the three cruise lines, you are now eligible for equivalent status on the other two—and that includes all the onboard discounts and bonuses that come with it depending on your status. You don’t need to do anything to take advantage of it other than provide your loyalty number before your cruise.

Use up those credit card perks and rewards

Each month, credit card companies provide incentives, like Amex Offers, for spending a certain amount with different retailers and brands. These can prove to be lucrative ways to score bonus points or sizable cash rebates. This month, The Platinum Card from American Express is offering many cardholders a $40 statement credit when spending $180 on Delta tickets. The offer is available through July 5, but must be activated in your credit card account first. Hilton, Hyatt Inclusive Collection, JetBlue, and Hertz have similar cash back offers valid for the start of summer.

And an offer especially for those with the Delta Platinum American Express card : 7,500 bonus Delta SkyMiles added to your account after spending $200 on Delta flights before August 15.

Chase Sapphire Reserve members attending the Olympics in Paris have access to a special VIP lounge that will have food, drinks, and meet-and-greets with Olympic athletes. Cardholders can bring one guest any time the lounge is open between July 27 and August 11. They are also eligible for special access to dinner reservations at an iconic restaurant with tasting menus in view of the Eiffel Tower .

Other good hotel bonuses to check out

Another promotion from World of Hyatt: If you book a stay at a Thompson Hotel or a Dream Hotel—two of Hyatt’s boutique luxury brands—each night will count as two nights towards elite status. This is running until July 15, an extension of an original promotion that was offered earlier in the year. Be sure to register before your stay .

Additionally, IHG One Rewards members can hit two birds with one stone by staying at any IHG property, earning their usual nights and points for the hotel stay, and earn United MileagePlus miles on top of that. The booking must be made by June 30, and the stays must be completed by August 31. Registration is required .

Axing paper rail tickets may make travel impossible for millions, campaigners warn

T rain companies must not axe paper tickets, disability and age campaigners have warned, as reports suggest that British railways’ orange card stubs could vanish in the next five years.

Northern Rail triggered uproar this week after suggesting that the paper train ticket could become a thing of the past by the year 2029.

Campaigners hit back by warning the rail industry that millions of people still rely on paper tickets and, in many cases, are not able to use smartphones and ticket-buying websites.

Known as “magstripes” thanks to the magnetic strip glued to the back of the orange ticket card, the current paper train ticket was introduced in 2014.

A spokesman for Northern said: “At the current rate of decline and with an ever-greater focus on digital and paper alternatives, magstripes are definitely nearing the end of the line.

“They could be something of a museum exhibit within five years.”

Yet age and disability campaign groups cautioned train companies against withdrawing paper tickets.

Age UK warned that withdrawing paper tickets would affect “millions of people” and make it “impossible” for them to get around by train.

Caroline Abrahams, a director of the charity, said: “Any move to make all train tickets virtual is likely to be met with equanimity by those who are savvy smartphone users, but with dismay by the millions of people, most of them older, who aren’t online at all.

“At best it would make it much harder for them to purchase a train ticket and at worst it could make it virtually impossible.

“Technological innovation is a wonderful thing and potentially offers cost savings to organisations at a time when money is tight, but it’s incumbent on everyone to remember that digital exclusion is still a major problem in our society.”

In a warning shot to Labour, which is well ahead of the Tories in the latest opinion polls, Ms Abrahams said future ticketing plans must not “airbrush out” people who do not use computers or smartphones.

A spokesman for disability campaign group Transport for All echoed Age UK’s call, pointing out that some disabled tickets are only available in paper format.

“While Northern are quick to reassure everyone that all of their ‘standard’ tickets are available online, many of the discounted fares that disabled people use – such as the 50 per cent wheelchair user discount – are not, and have to be bought at a ticket office,” said the spokesman.

“The ability to pay in cash, to get staff advice on which fare is cheapest, and travel without having to use a smartphone are all essential for our community to access the rail network.

Non-internet users

“Disabled people are also disproportionately likely to be non-internet users; 23 per cent of disabled adults do not have access to the internet, compared to 6 per cent of non-disabled adults.

“Even for those who are online, many websites are inaccessible, and any attempt by rail companies to go fully digital will leave hundreds of thousands of people unable to access their services.”

A spokesman for the Rail Delivery Group, the passenger train companies’ trade association, said: “There are no current plans to withdraw paper tickets, they will continue to be available for those who need them.

“The rail industry is moving away from magnetic stripe on paper tickets and replacing it with a printed digital barcode to work on recently-upgraded gate lines. This will complement the choice of tickets on smartphones and smartcards which are already proving very popular.

“Customer purchasing habits have changed dramatically since the pandemic with two thirds now using digital tickets for their journeys.

Labour has said that if it wins the election, it will set up automated ticket refunds for travellers delayed or left stranded by poor train services.

Yet such systems would rely on people buying tickets online, where computers can automatically calculate refunds and reimburse delayed passengers.

About the Welcome Suica (Child)

You can check the validity period of your Welcome Suica card, information about your discount ticket, etc., on the Reference Paper that you receive when you purchase the card. (This information will not be displayed on the Welcome Suica card itself.) Always carry this Reference Paper around with you, and show it to the staff if they ask to see it.

Recharge the Welcome Suica

• The Welcome Suica can be loaded and used as many times as desired.
• The Welcome Suica can be loaded up to a maximum of 20,000 yen at Automatic Ticket Vending Machines and Fare Adjustment Machines displaying the Welcome Suica mark.
• Load your card at Seven Bank ATMs, found at 7-Eleven and at other convenience stores.
• Only yen may be used to load a card. A credit card cannot be used to load a Welcome Suica.

No refunds are available, regardless of the validity period status or balance loaded on your card, so before leaving Japan be sure to use the remaining balance at a location displaying the Suica logo. (Please keep the card as a memento of your trip!)

Validity Period

The Welcome Suica is valid for 28 days, including the date of purchase. Please note that the validity period begins as soon as your purchase the card, and the card will become invalid on the 29th day.

Using Your Suica Card - Getting Around

Riding trains.

• Simply touch the Welcome Welcome Suica card to the reader at the ticket gate when out and about. There is no need to purchase a ticket from a vending machine.
• The fare is automatically calculated at the station where you get off.
• When you get off the train, the fare will be calculated at that station. If the balance is insufficient, however, you will need to add more money to your Welcome Suica.

* Additional tickets must be purchased to use the Welcome Suica for travel on a limited express, express or Green Car.

Valid Areas and Transportation Systems

• The Welcome Suica can be used on JR East lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area as well as for subways, buses and the Tokyo Monorail that connects Haneda Airport with Tokyo.
• In addition to the Tokyo area, the Welcome Suica can be used for certain transportation systems in the Sendai and Niigata, Hokkaido, Tokai, West Japan and Kyushu areas.

• This is the logo for the IC card nationwide network of mutual use service, which includes Suica, PASMO, Kitaca, TOICA, manaca, ICOCA, PiTaPa, SUGOCA, nimoca, and Hayakaken.

The Welcome Suica cannot be used for continuous travel between areas. The use of transportation begun in one area must be ended in that area. When crossing from one area to another, first leave the ticket gate and then re-enter.

Using Your Welcome Suica Card - E-money

• The Welcome Suica can be used not only for transportation but for shopping as well.
• You can use your Welcome Suica to make purchases onboard trains as well as from vending machines, to rent coin lockers and for spending at convenience stores and restaurants.

If your Welcome Suica card stops working

If your card doesn’t work even if your Welcome Suica card is still valid and has sufficient balance, you may be experiencing one of the following issues. Check your card holder, etc., and if you still can’t use the card, ask a station attendant in a Suica area for help.

• There may be something in your card holder that is preventing the automatic ticket gate from scanning your card.
• Your card may not have processed properly the last time you used it at a automatic ticket gate.
• You have used a station outside the Suica area, and your card need to be adjusted.

If the issue is due to a malfunction of the card itself, we ask you to do the following.

Apply for a malfunction refund

• We will check the balance on your card through the Card Number (17-digit number that starts with “JE”) listed on the back side of your card, and proceed with your refund.
• We cannot, under any circumstances, provide you with your refund if we cannot read your Card Number on the back of the card.

Malfunction refund

• We will refund your balance at any JR EAST Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) within a Suica area, starting the day after your refund application, up to 14 days after the end date of your Welcome Suica card validity period. You will not be able to receive your refund on the day of your application.
• To ask for a refund, bring your malfunctioning card, Reference Paper, and any other necessary documents with you to a JR EAST Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) within a Suica area.

Metro Milan

MILAN METRO LINES  – The Milan subway system comprises five lines: M1 (red line), M2 (green line), M3 (yellow line), M4(blue line) and M5 (lilac line), in addition to the  Milan Passante railway .

Here is a Milan metro map with all its lines and stops, as well as interesting information about each line.

LINE 1 / RED LINE  – This is the most important metro line in Milan and it connects its most relevant areas from the city center to the suburban area of the city. This line runs every day from 05.30 a.m. to 00.30 a.m., from north-east to west. On Sundays and on holidays the metro runs from 06.00 a.m. to 00.30 a.m. The most important stops on the red line are Duomo, San Babila, Castello and Cadorna FN.

LINE 2 / GREEN LINE  – This is the second metro line in Milan and connects some important touristic areas of the city, such as the Navigli area, Moscova, Brera district and Cadorna. It runs every day from 05.30 a.m. to 00.30 a.m., from north-east to south. On Sundays and on holidays the metro runs from 06.00 a.m. to 00.30 a.m.

LINE 3 / YELLOW LINE  – This line runs from north to south on a single line. It runs every day from 05.30 a.m. to 00.30 a.m., and on Sundays and on holidays from 06.00 a.m. to 00.30 a.m. The most important stops on this line are Duomo, Montenapoleone, Centrale FS and Porta Romana.

LINE 4 / BLUE LINE  – This new metro line is under construction, at the moment only 5 stops are ready. At the moment, this metro connects  Linate Airport to Piazza San Babila.

LINE 5 / LILAC LINE  – The lilac line connects the northern area of Milan with the western area. It runs every day from 05.30 a.m. to 00.30 a.m. On Sundays and on holidays the metro runs from 06.00 a.m. to 00.30 a.m. The most important stops are Isola (Porta Nuova district), Monumentale, Portello (City Life district) and San Siro.

PASSANTE FERROVIARIO (PASSANTE RAILWAY) OR SUBURBAN LINE  – This is an underground railway which runs through Milan. It has only 6 main stops in the city, which are Porta Vittoria, Dateo, Repubblica, Porta Venezia, Porta Garibaldi and Domodossola. You can use this line to move around Milan or to reach some cities outside Milan like Como, Varese, Cremona, Lodi etc.
