Missy Elliott on Her First Headlining Tour and Potentially Dropping the Six Albums Worth of Music She’s Recorded: ‘That’ll Happen Sooner Rather Than Later’

Missy Elliott

It’s hard to believe, but Missy Elliott has never gone on a headlining solo tour . The last time she regularly hit the road, it was alongside Beyoncé, who was promoting her debut solo album “Dangerously in Love,” as well as Alicia Keys and Tamia on the Verizon Ladies First Tour in 2004.

“I felt like it was time,” Elliott tells Variety of her upcoming Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience, kicking off on July 4 in Vancouver . “It’s just a good time. Especially for my era of fans out there to just see me do my own headline tour, they never got a chance to see that. And a new generation, too.”

For Elliott, going on a headline tour at this point is a natural peak in her run of milestones. She’s riding high off inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. That, plus she had a street named after her in her native Portsmouth, VA. For Out of This World, it felt right to spread her magic across the country alongside frequent career collaborators Busta Rhymes, Ciara and longtime partner-in-crime Timbaland. Though Elliott is years removed from a full body of work, it feels only right to corral the players in the world she built to bring it to life, one arena show at a time.

This is your first headlining tour thus far. So the question is, why now?

Well, I’ve had opportunities before and I was so engulfed in producing and writing for other artists. And I just woke up one day like, I want to go out on the road. And for my team of course, they thought I was playing, like yeah, alright. My manager, she called me the next day like, are you sure? Were you playing about what you said? No, I want to go out, I’m for real this time.

How does being the headliner differ for you from being part of these bigger vision tours that are co-billed?

Yeah, this is most definitely a different vibe, because now, it’s more so what am I going to do because I’m the headliner. But it’s fun, though. I feel like a kid in a candy store, for real. So you know, I’m going to try to put everything on the stage. But also I have Busta and Ciara and I’m excited about that because I made sure that I didn’t just pick people who were hot out there. They’re hot anyway because they have so many timeless hits. But I wanted that energy to match the energy that I have so I believe that all of us have the same energy. It’s you and me dancing the whole time.

You mention Ciara and Busta and Timbaland, obviously. You’ve collaborated with these artists a lot throughout your career. Do you plan on having cross-pollination between sets?

Great possibility, you never know. You know, I want to make sure everybody come out and see it. Trust me, I am fighting to not tell you how amazing it’s going to be. But possibly. Yes. [Laughs]

You’ve done these show-stopping performances at award shows over the past few years. But it’s a different beast to take on a headlining tour. How has it been boiling down your discography into a tight set?

It’s been hard. That’s the part that’s probably the most difficult because you have people all day underneath your posts or tweeting, “I hope you do this record.” Y’all have me on stage for five hours! So I’m trying, I’m trying to blend the stuff together so I can try to please everyone, but I know I won’t be able to. But I’m getting close to it.

Are any plans to include music from before “Supa Dupa Fly,” like from Fayze or Sista?

Oh… No, if I go back that far, I most definitely… Y’all would be coming back a week straight if I go back that far. Y’all would be coming back every day for a week. So nah, I’m going to start at “The Rain,” for sure. I can give you that information. I’m going to start there.

It’s about to be the 25th anniversary of “Da Real World” on June 22. What do you remember about that period of time working with Timbaland? That album sounded like the future then, and it sounds like the future now. So how do you feel about it looking back?

“Dangerous Mouths.”

You see! You know better than me! So all of that had… Even in “She’s a Bitch,” the breakdown… Everything was very dramatic. And so I can appreciate that album as one of my tops because at that time, it was stressful but when I look back, I’m like, damn, we were in a pocket, a different kind of pocket that was amazing to blend the two because it was hip-hop but it still had the theatrics to it.

Over the years, you’ve teased “Block Party.” We got the “Iconology” EP in 2019. Last year, Tim said you guys were locked in and he was hoping the album would come out in summer. So the question you always get asked: What’s up?

Well, you never know with me. It’s almost like the way this [tour] just surfaced out of nowhere, all of these years, we’re talking about “The Rain,” it’s like 27 years, and here I go like, oh I’m going out on the road. It’s one of those things I think about with the music. You never know when I decide, OK, this is the time to put out a whole album.

How much music would you say you’ve amassed, solo records, since “The Cookbook?”

Oh my goodness. [Laughs] Can you imagine someone like Prince answering that? Only because when you are a writer and a producer, I’m quite sure I can probably speak for a lot of those types of people, that they’re recording all the time. So I probably have at least six albums worth of music at this point.

Missy… Come on!

Yeah. And Tim is always saying that to me, “What you waiting for? So what you waiting for then?” I be like, I don’t know. But yeah, I believe that it’ll be a day that everybody’s going on about their way, and then you just look online and see an album date from me. So yeah, I think that’ll happen sooner than later.

You’ve had decades in the industry and have put out so many great albums and done great things. Have you had time to stop and reflect on your legacy, and take a step back and look at what you’ve accomplished and put it into perspective? Or are you still wowed by it?

Travelers Championship DFS picks 2024: It's a perfect spot for Patrick Cantlay

A fter a thrilling week at Pinehurst No. 2, the PGA Tour heads north to TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. , for the Travelers Championship, another signature event. The Travelers Championship has long been a favorite for players, caddies and fans alike, and TPC River Highlands provides a distinct atmosphere, and one that will play a sharp contrast to what we saw last week at the U.S. Open. After Keegan Bradley triumphed at 23-under par last year, the PGA Tour made some notable changes to the Pete Dye-designed golf course , pinching in multiple fairways and enhancing the risk of hitting driver with reckless abandon. The golf course stayed exactly the same length at 6,852 yards, and it remains the shortest course on the entire PGA Tour schedule. Yet many of the longer hitters might now think about such an aggressive approach.

Coming off his worst finish of the season, Scottie Scheffler looks to rebound on a golf course that he finished fourth at last year. Sticking with the signature format, a truncated field of 72 players will be guaranteed all four rounds, and it will be fascinating to watch some of the best in the world take on a dramatically different golf course to what we have experienced the past couple of weeks at Muirfield Village and Pinehurst. Let’s dive into the slate.

RELATED:  Does Brandel Chamblee have a point about Rory McIlroy's major drought being 'technical'?

Ross Kinnaird

While Ludvig Aberg’s performance over the weekend at Pinehurst left a lot to be desired, I expect the young Swede to bounce back in a big way at TPC River Highlands. Aberg has a surprisingly strong resume on short, positional golf courses—outside of winning at Sea Island last fall, he also contended this year at Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass and Harbour Town, three signature venues that surprisingly curb distance in exchange for elite wedge play and putting.

My original fade, Rory McIlroy, has withdrawn. With just three players in this price range, it’s hard to find a real fade. In general, I think the course changes will hurt players with Rory’s type of skill set the most.

RELATED:  Twitter meme'd Rory McIlroy to death following gutting loss at Pinehurst

Patrick Cantlay put together a wildly impressive, complete performance at the U.S. Open last week, gaining strokes in all four major categories en route to his highest-ever major finish. Now he returns to one of his most comfortable golf courses on tour, where he has recorded seven top-25 finishes in nine appearances, including a fourth-place finish last year. Long overdue for a win, Cantlay’s game is rounding into form at just the right time.

Sam Burns’ ninth-place finish at Pinehurst was certainly encouraging, but this price bump still feels like an overreaction. Burns has been just okay in four appearances at TPC River Highlands, and his approach play still raises a major red flag. Burns has now lost over a stroke on approach in back-to-back starts this season, and this aspect of his game will need to be in tip-top shape to generate enough scoring opportunities on such a benign golf course.

Jared C. Tilton

Brian Harman possesses some of the strongest course history at TPC River Highlands with six top-10 finishes in 12 appearances, including three top-10s in a row. Harman is coming off a rock solid 21st-place finish at the U.S. Open, and his best finish of the season came on another short, positional Pete Dye track in TPC Sawgrass. I’m expecting another impressive performance from the Reigning Champion Golfer of the Year this week in Hartford.

I was fairly disappointed in what I saw from Matt Fitzpatrick last week at Pinehurst, and TPC River Highlands is a far worse fit for his skill-set. I far prefer the former U.S. Open champion in more difficult scoring conditions, and he has failed to record a top-40 finish in each of his two appearances at TPC River Highlands.

Tracy Wilcox

I love Sepp Straka’s fit at TPC River Highlands, and he is coming off another great ball-striking performance at the U.S. Open. While Straka's short game sank him at Pinehurst, the two-time PGA Tour winner will face a much softer landing this week around the greens. Straka will be able to rely on his accurate driving and elite wedge far more at this golf course, and his success at tracks such as TPC Deere Run, TPC Sawgrass, and Harbour Town provide strong indication that he is up for this type of challenge.

I really thought that Pinehurst No. 2 would be a great fit for Byeong Hun An, but he reminded us just how volatile his putting can be. An now travels to a shorter, more positional golf course that will curb his power off the tee, and he has non-coincidentally failed to finish top-40 in all five of his appearances at TPC River Highlands. An will be forced to rely less on the strength of his driver, and more on his wedge play and putting at the Pete Dye design, which may be too much of an ask right now.

J.T. Poston possesses the ideal skill-set for TPC River Highlands, and despite a volatile track record at the Pete Dye design, the Postman has experienced considerable success at many of the comparative courses I am looking at this week. Poston has recorded wins at both Sedgefield and TPC Deere Run, as well as multiple top-10 finishes at Harbour Town and TPC Potomac. Coming off a 32nd at the U.S. Open, Poston is now entering a great part of the schedule for his style of play.

RELATED: Rory McIlroy's quick exit from Pinehurst parking lot was a painful sight

Adam Svensson has quietly developed into one of the better ball-strikers on tour, and he is coming off another strong tee to green performance at Pinehurst. Svensson has now gained over a stroke ball-striking in six straight starts, and while the putter is always a concern, the Canadian simply possesses too much upside for me to pass up in an otherwise shaky $6,000 range.

Risk, reward lurk at drivable par-4 third on U.S. Open Saturday

PINEHURST, N.C. – It's a doctorate-level examination on this U.S. Open Saturday, with increasingly firm conditions forcing players to hit specific numbers to hold approach shots on Pinehurst No. 2’s turtleback greens. The conditions will make for appointment viewing Saturday afternoon, with tee times stretching to 3:35 p.m. ET for the final pairing of Ludvig Åberg and Bryson DeChambeau.

The par-4 third hole could offer some early fireworks. The 382-yard par 4 is using a forward tee for Saturday’s third round, with the hole playing to just 316 yards, an early chance to get aggressive and pursue an eagle opportunity.

Red numbers can be rare at a U.S. Open, an axiom that will ring true on Saturday, a Moving Day where any significant moving is likely backwards. The third hole could be a birdie chance, although peril also lurks.

The third hole’s green complex is one of Pinehurst’s most devilish – at a venue with 18 devilish complexes – with a severe dropoff just off the green’s back side. Saturday’s back-middle hole location is snugly placed near the green's back edge. A snake-like bunker protects most of the green’s left side, with two more bunkers short and right of the green – there are a few yards of fairway between the bunkers to chase a ball onto the green, but it’s an exacting challenge.

The hole played to 389 yards in Round 1 and 382 yards in Round 2. All players Thursday opted to lay back off the tee, leaving a wedge approach to the hole. The same was mostly true Friday, with the exception being Charlie Reiter who played to just left of the green. Through 11 twosomes Saturday, no player had yet to hit the green – although most were within close proximity in the adjacent bunkers and grasses. Among the early starters to attack the green with driver: Scottie Scheffler (left bunker) and Cameron Young (right bunker).

The first player to pull it off: Ohio State alum Neal Shipley, who launched a rocket-like tee shot to 21 feet. Shipley is making his final start as an amateur (via a runner-up at last year's U.S. Amateur) before he turns pro for next week's PGA TOUR Americas event.

The shot might be doable, but it’s far from easy.

“The moment I wake up on a Saturday after missing the cut I root for the course to become impossible so I can laugh at all the stupid players who whooped my ass,” Max Homa posted Saturday morning on X, after missing the cut by a stroke with rounds of 71-75.

Homa should get his wish Saturday – with a splash of unpredictability at the third hole.

About the Damajagua River Tour (27 Charcos of Damajagua)!!

12 waterfalls (damajagua river tour):.

Come and enjoy the 27 Pools of the Damajagua River Tour! Perched in the rolling hills of the Northern mountain range of the Dominican Republic, this is a natural treasure that you will not find on any other part of this world. Indeed, Mother Nature has produced 27 beautiful pools, carved by the limestone. Be ready to have fun!!!

Although the 27 waterfalls have existed for millennia they were only recently discovered by the outside world. Therefore, the first tourists began arriving at the Falls in 1994, and little by little, word got out about this amazing natural treasure and spawned a guiding industry for the local young men. Nevertheless, ten years later, nearly 50,000 tourists every year come to Rio Damajagua to enjoy what Dominicans have known about for centuries.

Thus, the number of tourists coming to 27 Charcos has grown dramatically. In 1998, the local guides officially formalized their association in to the AGRD, the Association of Guides of Rio Damajagua. Our team has extensive experience as water guides and strives to ensure that your satisfaction is our number one priority. Our goal is to make the time you spend with us the highlight of your vacation.

At first, the tour begins at the beautiful, new, visitor center. Come and enjoy traditional Dominican food and beverages in the open-air restaurant with breath-taking mountain views. Next, make your way to the first waterfall on our interpretive nature trail on which you will encounter hundreds of species of tropical plants and birds.

The Waterfalls:

  • The First Waterfall (“The Virgin”): Legend says that the Taino Indians who used to inhabit the area built a statue of the Virgin Saint of the Dominican Republic, Altagracia.
  • The Perfect Waterslide (“La Tinajita”): “La Tinajita” At over 20 feet deep, this waterfall is one of the most exciting!!
  • The Corkscrew: A fun climb and an even better slide on the way back down.
  • T.O.Y.S.: This innocent looking waterfall has the tendency to make some tourists a little red in the face. You might want to tie up that swimsuit tight…
  • The Cave: The waterfall that falls through the domed roof gives a fantastic massage.
  • The Crystal: “The 8th” Tourists that climb up to this waterfall can be almost assured that they will not see any other tourists for the rest of the day.
  • Hot and Cold: The water in this fall has separated into two different levels, but opposite from what you might expect: hot on the bottom and cold on top.
  • Flor’s Fall: Flor Trejo was an old farmer who used to have a small plantation on one of the mountainsides near Rio Damajagua.
  • The Jaiba: This pool, with its crystalline water, is named for the fresh water crabs that can be found living in a crack in the rock wall.
  • The Hammock: About 16 years ago, a large vine hung from the tree canopy above the river that looked like a hammock.
  • The Taino: The view form the base of this fall is one of the most beautiful there is. Enjoy!
  • The Natural Pool: The most beautiful of all the waterfalls, the Natural Pool has characteristics that resemble a real pool.
