LAX Shuttles and Buses

LAX Airport -the main airport in Los Angeles- is well-connected to every part of LA and its surrounding areas via numerous bus lines. From the LAX FlyAway Bus to various Metro bus lines, commuter buses, and private and public routes, passengers arriving or departing from LAX will undoubtedly find a cheap -but usually time-consuming- bus to reach their destination or get to the airport.

The LAX City Bus Center

The main bus station serving Los Angeles International Airport is the LAX City Bus Center. Lying about 0.5 miles (0.8km) from LAX terminals, the transit hub is linked to the airport complex via a free shuttle line. Hence, passengers wishing to reach their journey’s end by bus have to catch the C Shuttle to Lot South/LAX City Bus Center. Shuttle C calls at all terminals on their Arrivals level. The stops are easily spotted, marked by the PINK LAX Shuttle signs. Shuttles depart from T1 every 15-20 minutes and run clockwise, passing through all the other eight terminals before heading to LAX City Bus Center. Thus, the duration of their rides is highly dependent on the traffic conditions at the Central Terminal Area. Please note that Shuttles C don’t operate from 02:00 am to 04:00 am.

The LAX FlyAway Buses

The LAX FlyAway Bus Lines connect Los Angeles Airport to LA Union Station (lying downtown) and Van Nuys Station. LAX FlyAway Shuttles stop at the Arrivals level of all LAX terminals. Passengers can easily reach the relevant stop by following the signs. The bus stops lie where the Blue LAX FlyAway signs are to be found. As a matter of fact, there are two FlyAway routes: one links Los Angeles Airport to Union Station, running at a 30-minute frequency from 05:40 am to 01:10 am, and the other travels to Van Nuys Station. LAX FlyAway Bus to Van Nuys Station operates every 20 minutes, around the clock. Buses to Union Station need around 30-60 minutes to reach their terminus (depending on the roads’ congestion), whereas shuttles to Van Nuys get to their destination in about 40-80 minutes.

As far as the bus fares are concerned, a one-way adult ticket costs 9.75$/9.15€, and children younger than 5 travel for free (actually it applies to two children per paying adult). Tickets are available online (already activated, passengers just have to scan them on the bus validator), and through the mobile app (in that case, tickets need to be activated). However, once they are activated, they are valid for 3 hours.), and from the ticket kiosks located at Union and Van Nuys Stations. Please note that cash isn’t an accepted payment method at the ticket booths. Furthermore, you can’t buy a ticket for the LAX Flyaway buses on the bus. What’s more, the purchase of a ticket doesn’t reserve you a specific seat.

Our Tip: LAX FlyAway Shuttles are accessible and pet-friendly. Moreover, they offer free Wi-Fi and are equipped with charging points, but they don’t have restrooms. On the other hand, each passenger is allowed to carry 3 bags and one carry-on item. Nevertheless, some size restrictions may apply.

Public LAX Buses

Several public providers offer their services at LAX Airport. All bus lines depart from LAX City Bus Center. Hence, a ride with Shuttle C is required to reach their departure point. In general terms, the public LAX buses are the most affordable transit option. However, they are often, at the same time, the most time-consuming ones.

Explicitly, the public buses serving Los Angeles Airport are:

  • The Culver CityBus Line 6 and Rapid 6: Departing from LAX City Bus Center, the Culver Buses serve areas such as the Sepulveda, Westwood, and UCLA. Buses run at a 15-minute frequency from 05:00 am to 11:01 pm. On weekends, their timetable is slightly different. Thus, they have available routes from 05:58 am to 11:09 pm. On the other hand, the Rapid 6 Line makes limited stops on its way but operates only on weekdays, from 06:29 am to 05:57 pm. A bus ticket costs as much as 1$/0.94€. Passengers can pay their bus fares using the buses’ fareboxes, even in cash. However, the machines don’t give back change. Alternatively, they can use a TAP Card.
What is a TAP Card? TAP Cards are reusable cards that can be bought online or through their app, or via the stations’ automatic vendors. In the last case, they cost 2$/1.88€ (plus taxes). Passengers can reload them through the automatic ticket machines, the authorized vendor locations, and online (or using their app). What’s more, they can recharge them by calling the TAP Customer Service. The big perk of TAP Cards is the fare-capping system. Thus, passengers have to pay for their rail or bus fares up to a point (a “cap”) calculated per day or week. Verily, the daily cap is 5$/4.70€, and the week’s cap is 18$/16.90€. Once they pay that amount of money, all other rides are free.
  • Beach Cities Transit (BCT) 109: Shuttles leave LAX City Bus Center traveling to Redondo Beach Riviera Village, also serving (among others) downtown Manhattan Beach and El Segundo. They are available from 05:55 am to 08:25 pm on weekdays and from 06:45 am to 08:55 pm on weekends, and they run approximately every 40-50 minutes. TAP Cards can be used on the BCT Buses as well.
  • Big Blue Bus (BBB) Route 3 or Rapid 3: Route 3 operates from 05:04 am to 10:53 pm on weekdays and from 05:41 am to 10:54 pm on weekends. Its frequency is around 13 minutes. On the other hand, Rapid 3 runs only from Monday to Friday and from 07:14 am to 08:14 am. The BBB Buses efficiently connect LAX to Santa Monica and Venice and cost as much as 1.10$/1/03€. Mobile tickets and TAP payments come with free transfers to other BBB lines within a 2-hour time, but cash payments are accepted as well (however, you’ll have to pay 1.25$/1.18€ for your ticket in exact change). In any case, children under 5 don’t have to pay for their tickets.
  • Torrance Transit Route 8: Buses run toward Hawthorne from 06:06 am to 09:31 pm (06:33 am to 08:29 pm on Sundays). Tickets cost 1$/0.94€. TAP Cards can also be used on Torrance Transit Buses.
  • GTrans Line 5: This bus line leaves from Aviation/LAX Station, meaning that LAX passengers have to take the free Shuttle G departing from all terminals’ Arrivals areas and heading to Aviation/LAX Station. The GTrans Line 5 links the airport to various destinations. Centennial High School, Hawthorne Sports Center, MLK Community Hospital, and Magic Johnson Park are just some of them. It runs from 6:30 am to 08:00 pm on an hourly basis and costs 1$/0.94€. Payments can be made via TAP Cards.

The LAX Metro Buses

Several metro buses provide connections from Los Angeles International Airport to various parts of LA. Their fares are priced at 1.75$/1.64€. Payments can be made with TAP Cards (allowing further transfers within 2 hours from the first ride). Cash payments are also accepted, but only on buses that don’t have All-Door Boarding.

In detail, the following metro bus lines are available at LAX Airport:

  • Metro Bus Line 111 (LAX City Bus Center to Norwalk): it operates from 04:05 am to 00:23 am.
  • Metro Bus Line 117 (LAX City Bus Center to Downey): available from 05:15 am to 01:00 am.
  • Metro Bus Line 102 (LAX City Bus Center to South Gate): running from 05:05 am to 00:09 am.
  • Metro Bus Line 120 (Aviation/LAX Station to Whittwood Center): the bus operates from 04:19 am to 11:26 pm.
  • Metro Bus Line 232 (LAX City Bus Center to Long Beach): its operating hours are 04:22 am to 11:47 pm.
The Red Pylons lying outside the Arrivals of each terminal indicate the stops of hotels and offsite-airport-parking shuttles.

Shared Rides – More Shuttles from Los Angeles Airport

Even more bus lines are available at LAX Airport. Nevertheless, all the following buses depart from the stops, situated at the LAX terminals’ Arrivals levels and marked by Orange Shared Rides signs.

  • Antelope Valley Airport Express: linking LAX to Santa Clarita, Palmdale, and Lancaster, the Antelope Valley Shuttles provide their services from 05:30 am to 10:00 pm, every 2-3 hours.
  • Central Coast Shuttle: Shuttles run from 08:30 am to 10:00 pm every 2-3 hours. Their routes start from T1. Hence, they need around 15-20 minutes to pass through all terminals. They serve various areas, including Ventura, Santa Barbara, Buelton, and Santa Maria. The ride from LAX to Santa Maria Airport costs around 90$/84.20€.
  • Mickey’s Space Ship Shuttle: the ideal shuttle for rides to Disneyland resort hotels, Hollywood, Universal Studios, etc.
  • reLAXsan (San Diego): Handling rides to San Diego, reLAXsan buses are also a comfortable option for passengers traveling to Sorrento Valley and Oceanside. Their 2-3-hour journey costs around 70$/65.50€. There are only two available routes, at 11:45 am and 07:45 pm.
  • Santa Barbara Airbus: Heading to Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria, shuttles run every 2 ½ -3 hours from 08:00 am to 10:00 pm. A one-way ticket from LAX to Santa Barbara costs around 65$/60.80€, whereas children under 2 travel for free.
  • Shuttle 2000: a suitable option for travelers heading to Disneyland or John Wayne Airport.
  • Shuttle One: the Shuttle One Buses handle rides to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and various hotels in Anaheim, Buena Park, and Garden Grove.
  • Ventura County Airporter: Ventura County Airporter Shuttles link LAX to Ventura and Oxnard. Their routes are available from 07:00 am to 09:30 pm at a 1-2-hour frequency. Overall, a single ticket costs 50$/46.80€ for an adult passenger, whereas children younger than 12 pay 30$/28€ for their tickets.

Ratings and Reviews

Need ticket accessibility.

I am a frequent traveler and never really had a negative experience on Flyaway. Unfortunately, July 2024 trip was my first. The new scanning ticket procedure is horribly delaying, unclear for many, leading to confusion even for young adults. Traveling LAX, the majority of their adult lives, my now 70 yr old parents, would be lost and unable to access the new Flyaway’s system to travel. The pay-at-arrival option is a required need for our aging or tech-hindered population, who STILL PAY into this city’s economy.

Don’t use the app — double charged me and they make it impossible to get the money back

The bus itself is great. But this app, and the company that handle billing, are bad news. I tried to buy one ticket, but the app showed that the ticket sale did not go through. So I tried again and suddenly it shows I’ve bought 2 tickets. The app does not offer a way to cancel the 2nd ticket. I emailed the address provided and got no answer. A follow up phone call was an exercise in frustration and futility. Clearly they do everything they can to make it tough or impossible to get a refund. Too bad they are willing to burn bridges with customers over such small spoils (keeping money for a ticket that I did not want and that will never be used because it expires too soon!)
Flyaway has gotten me home safely several times. Buses are big and pretty safe. Never had an issue with payment as you can just pay when you get to the station. The apps however are complete dog****

How to Take Public Transit to LA's Major Landmarks

Traverse the city sans traffic..

los angeles metro train rolls into a station with downtown la in the background

I’m not going to lie to you—public transit in LA isn’t perfect. It may not even be good. But it can be surprisingly functional, if you know how and when to use it. Angelenos who live near a Metro station have the world at their fingertips, or at least they have the very specific places the Metro runs within reasonable reach. And if you’re willing to combine multiple methods of transportation like buses, trains, Metro Micro , rideshares, rentable electric scooters, urban hiking (walking), rentable jet skis, gondolas ( both   kinds ), skitching on Amazon delivery trucks, and more, then you can pretty easily get anywhere in town. And city officials assure us it will only get better over the next few years—we’re going to have a car-free Olympics , they say.

Union Station is the central hub for LA’s rail system, a gorgeous Art Deco and Mission Revival-style building just north of downtown and across the street from the historic Pueblo de Los Angeles. If you’re trying to build a transit map of LA, it’s really the only place to start. And so, then, here is our practical transit map: how to get to 10 essential places in LA using public transportation.

crowded intersection at downtown santa monica metro station

When tourists say they want to go to ‘the beach’ in LA, they usually mean Santa Monica , for the pier and the shopping and the food scene. And as it turns out, Santa Monica is actually pretty accessible through transit. Your best bet is to take a 5 minute jaunt on either the Metro B or D lines to the 7th Street Metro Center, and then hop on the E line, which will take you all the way to downtown Santa Monica.

If you want to go to other beaches, well, that’s a trickier proposition. You may want to just go to Santa Monica then take, for example, the 33 bus down to the Venice Boardwalk or the 134 up PCH to Malibu. Or if you’re headed to the South Bay beaches, the best of a bad set of options is probably to hop on the A line, then transfer to the C in Willowbrook, then get on the 109 bus which runs down to the sand.

Griffith Observatory

Whether you want to learn about the stars, get a bit of nature in the city, or it’s just another stop on your Ryan Gosling tour , Griffith Observatory is one of the best places to visit in LA. And public officials know it—it’s actually perfectly convenient via public transportation. Hop on the B line at Union Station, then at the Vermont and Sunset station change over to the very specific Observatory/Los Feliz DASH bus , which will take you right there.

Metro sign at hollywood and highland intersection in los angeles

Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Walk of Fame is perhaps the most overrated place in the world , a congested and unpleasant stretch of tourist traps lined up end to end. And yet, tourists continue to flock to it and many people insist on it for their first visit to LA. Fortunately for those folks, the B line goes directly to Hollywood and Vine or Hollywood and Highland, right in the heart of the action so you can be underwhelmed at maximum efficiency.

For our money, the Hollywood stops on the B line are better used to explore all of the best restaurants in Hollywood or to check out Hollywood Forever and the Cinespia movie screenings there—and the celebs who love them . Or, if you’re looking for a hike, hop on the Beachwood Canyon DASH bus to get into a lovely little enclave in the shadow of the Hollywood Sign or walk a mile the other direction for the justifiably famous Runyon Canyon.

sofi stadium with huge parking lots seen from above

SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome in Inglewood

This is a tricky one, honestly. As of this moment, there isn’t a simple way to get to the shiny new stadiums in Inglewood via public transportation. The SoFi Stadium website has a reasonably thorough list of transportation options, but it’s pretty complicated and depends a lot on whether you’re going for an NFL game or for another reason. Your best option is probably from Metro, which offers a shuttle that runs from the Hawthorne/Lennox station on the C line, but there are other choices too. On NFL game days, for example, the city of Inglewood offers a public park and ride program, but rates range from $38–$58 all-in. A little better: Gardena Transit and Torrance Transit will each take you there for only $4 roundtrip, leaving from the Harbor Gateway Transit Center and the Mary K. Giordano Regional Transit Center, respectively.

For Intuit Dome games and events, things are much easier—stadium officals just announced a free park and ride shuttle service from five locations spread across the city, including Union Station, Woodland Hills, Culver City, El Monte, and Gardena. And by the time the Olympics come around in 2028—where both of these stadiums will be key venues —there may be more options.

The Sunset Strip

If you want to check out some rock & roll history at The Roxy, The Whiskey, or The Viper Room; catch some comedy at The Comedy Store; or hit the famous bars and clubs of West Hollywood, it’s pretty easy to get to the Sunset Strip from downtown. But that doesn’t mean it’s fast. The number 2 bus runs the length of Sunset Boulevard, from downtown to the beach, a slow crawl that will take you through the full range of LA neighborhoods, from Echo Park and Silver Lake through East Hollywood, Hollywood proper, and on into the ritzier, more touristy west side. You can also shortcut the bus route by jumping on the metro B line and then catching that 2 bus anywhere in Hollywood between Vermont and Highland.

backlot tram tour at universal studios hollywood

Universal Studios

Finally, here’s one where public transit just works—and we're not talking about the trams on the backlot tour. It’s actually quite easy to get to Universal Studios on public transportation. The B line runs directly from Union Station to Universal City Station, which lets you out at the bottom of the hill across the street from Citywalk. It’s a bit of an uphill climb to get to the park itself from there, but there’s a pedestrian bridge over the busy intersection and there are often a ton of rideshare electric scooters available for checkout at the station.

rodeo drive from across the street in beverly hills

Rodeo Drive

There are two separate paths you can take here, both of which involve long bus rides. The 4 bus runs along Sunset into Silver Lake, then cuts down to Santa Monica Boulevard for the duration, so if you want to camp out in one seat for an hour as you look out the window at Hollywood, WeHo, and Beverly Hills, that’s a good choice. If you’d rather mix it up a bit, what you’re looking for is the 20 or 720 bus, but to get there you’ll need to take the B or D metro line for a little ways—perhaps to Wilshire and Vermont, or perhaps to 5th and Grand in downtown, where you can swap to the bus. It may not be the most glamorous way to arrive to the luxury shopping neighborhood, but you’re better off putting the money towards eating, drinking, and shopping in Beverly Hills anyway. Then maybe take a car service back with your new Goyard bag and Ocean Prime leftovers.

Disneyland

You can theoretically take the bus to Disneyland from LA, but it’s not a great option. Instead, consider riding the rails: Metrolink’s Orange County Line runs directly from Union Station to the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner runs the same route. At the ARTIC, there’s a shuttle bus that will take you right into the Disneyland Resort, and it’s free with your ticket from either train company. That way you can save on parking, so you can spend more on Glow Cubes and Club 33 .

bus pulls up at academy museum in miracle mile, los angeles

Miracle Mile Museums

Taking public transportation to some of the best museums in LA is surprisingly doable—the stretch of Miracle Mile called Museum Row includes LACMA, the Petersen, Craft Contemporary, the Page Museum, the La Brea Tar Pits, and the Academy Museum. To get to Museum Row from Union Station, you want more or less the same directions as the Rodeo Drive guide above. That is, the 20 or 720 buses are your goal, and you can ride the Metro D line to Wilshire/Western Station and catch the buses from there.. The stop you want is Wilshire and Ogden, conveniently directly in front of LACMA and the iconic Urban Light installation.

The Queen Mary

Long Beach is an important departure point for cruises in the LA area, as well as for the Catalina Express . But the coolest ship in the harbor doesn’t move at all—the Queen Mary is a wacky, historic, and potentially haunted ocean liner that’s open for tours, dining, and overnight stays. It’s also a reasonable walk or a short scooter away from Shoreline Village and the Aquarium of the Pacific. To get there from Union Station, take the A line all the way down to Downtown Long Beach—it runs in a pretty direct north-south line from downtown. Take a stroll, maybe pop into Ism Brewing for a beer and a snack, and then walk, bike, or scoot on over to the ship.

Burbank Airport

LA’s best airport is also its most convenient—it’s easy to get to by car, and it’s just as easy to get to Burbank Airport on public transportation. The Metrolink Ventura County Line runs right there from Union Station in a brisk half-hour ride. That also happens to be as fast as driving most of the time, and at rush hour it’s even faster.

flyaway bus to lax at union station in downtown la

Only ask your closest, dearest, truest friends to pick you up or drop you off at LAX , and even then only if you really have to; driving to or from LAX is a nightmare. Instead, be a good person and ask your buddies to leave you at Union Station, where you can escape from LA via the lovely and convenient FlyAway bus. There are some other options too, like taking the C line to the Aviation Station and then catching a free pink shuttle to LAX, or taking one of the many buses to the LAX City Bus Center, but they do make things a little more complicated, less predictable, slower, and only a little bit more affordable.

University of Redlands Main Campus

The main campus of the University of Redlands is in Redlands, CA, which is about 70 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.  For a map, click here .

The 17th IICCS will be held in Orton Center on the University of Redlands' main campus in Redlands, California.   For a campus map, click here .

Getting there: Airports

There a number of airports serving the greater Los Angeles area.  For a list, click here (missing from that list is the Palm Springs airport, which is 47 miles from the Redlands campus)

The Ontario International Airport (ONT) is closest, roughly 25 miles to campus).  Although Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is farther, at 84 miles, it may be the most feasible for those who who are coming from other coutries.

Because the University has its own train station , it is possible (with some planning) to get  to the University from either LAX and ONT via bus and train (see, e.g.,  this link provides information about getting to a Metrolink station from the  ONT airport).

Those wanting to take the train from LAX would first catch the FlyAway Bus to Union Station and then Metrolink from there.  It is relatively inexpensive, but takes roughly 3 hours total travel time.

San Bernardino Airport:   San Bernardino is the city adjacent to Redlands and has a small airport served by the budget airlines, Breeze Airways. Breeze connects to a  limited range of cities from San Bernardino (Hartford, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Provo, and San Francisco), but for those participants coming from those cities, this could be a less expensive option that is relatively close to the University.
