" It was a long distance to travel from California to ride dirt bikes but the trip was really worth the effort. I am really impressed with your professionalism and commitment to delivering a positive experience to your clients and can certainly appreciate why you have so much repeat business. The food was the best I have had in Spain and I particularly enjoyed the lunches in the small villages which added an unexpected bonus to the trip. Lastly, I am pretty sure my riding skills have/will improve after following your near perfectly carved track for 500km! "

We're based near Valderrobres , a stunning example of a Spanish medieval county town, immaculately preserved and sympathetically restored over the centuries. The capital of the Matarraña district (known as "The Tuscany of Spain"), in the Teruel province of Aragon, Valderrobres is the perfect base for any offroad motorbike holiday or enduro tour in north-east Spain.

In contrast with the dry, barren, dusty landscapes seen further south in Spain, north-east Spain is a lush, mountainous region with spectacular scenery, some of the most beautiful mountain towns and villages in Spain, and possibly the best offroad riding anywhere in Spain. Teruel, the least inhabited province in Spain, with it's labyrinth of thousands of kilometres of dirt trails, is offroad heaven.

We ride in the most impressive Els Ports Natural Park , in the mountains of remote, rural Aragon , Valencia and Catalonia regions, and in the picture-postcard Matarraña, Terra Alta, Els Ports and Maestrazgo districts.

Spain's most beautiful, ancient and undiscovered natural scenery - as seen from a KTM!!

- NEW & IMPROVED ROUTES -

Our routes are always a "work-in-progress", discovered and improved over the many years we've been riding in the area. We're blessed with the trails we already know, but when we find new trails, it just gets better. A n offroad biker's paradise indeed.

Off Road Biking Spain

Dirt biking in spain, for all those adrenalin junkies out there .

Dirt Biking in Spain

Dirt biking in Spain allows to enjoy the mountains, lakes, beaches, forests, hills, and rivers of Spain: with such unrivaled variety, it’s no wonder that Spain is so loved by off-road motorcyclists. It’s a mecca that offers something for long-time riders as well as first-time riders.

A geographical introduction to Spanish dirt biking

Dirt Biking in Spain

Those who have never been dirt biking in Spain before may be surprised to hear that the landscape is made up of more than beaches .

It is true that the country has 8,000 km of coastline. However, it is also one of the most mountainous countries in Europe (with three-quarters of it at 500 metres above sea-level), one of the most diverse in terms of ecosystems, and the third largest (behind France and Ukraine).

The north of the country is home to Montserrat, the famous geological wonder that translates from Catalan (the local language) to “saw mountain”.

The Ebro, the second largest river in the Iberian Peninsula, flows through the country and gives bikers plenty of chances to get muddy.

A nice contrast to this are the many dusty, off-road tracks in Andalucia in the south . Southern Spain also offers stunning views of the northern tip of Africa and miles of beachside dirt bike riding. Added to that, the south of Spain offers the Sierra Nevada, which is a chance for bikers to ride through snow, forests, and take in the spectacular scenery.

The  capital of Spain, Madrid , is a sprawling metropolis that, due to its prime location in the centre of the country, can be used as the start or end point of many epic Spanish road trips.

Madrid to Vigo, Madrid to Valencia, Madrid to Bilbao, and Madrid to  Malaga on the Costa del Sol  are all great chances to head from the beating heart of the country to its fringes, with some great dirt biking along the way.

Dirt biking in Spain is perfect for veterans and beginners alike. For veterans, there are long established routes, communities, and blogs for bikers who are aware of the sport but new to the region.

For beginners, there are many companies out there willing to offer motorcycle holidays in Spain.

In equal measure, Spain can be a series of flat wide open expanses for those who want an easy ride, or it can be a steep and rocky challenge for those who are more hardcore.

What gear will I need for dirt biking in Spain?

Dirt Biking in Spain Fun

Preparation is key for a successful dirt biking trip – especially in Spain. If you are going on a dirt biking tour with well-established company, then most of the kit will be provided for you. Yet it is still good to check what a given company does and does not provide as it may not always be the same with each one.

Starting with the obvious, you will need a dirt bike and biking clothing that (ideally) will cover you from head to toe. It might be tempting to avoid covering up so much, given Spain’s heat, but nobody wants their first point of contact with the ground to be their skin so safety takes priority here.

You will also need a helmet. You may feel the need to buy tinted goggles, due to the intense Spanish sunshine, but be sure to check that they are within regulation visibility (50 per cent).

Check out our travel gear essentials for adventure travellers .

Top tips for Spanish dirt biking

Dirt Biking Spain

When it comes to dirt biking in Spain, being safe and having fun go hand in hand. For example, there is nothing fun about dehydration and the Spanish climate means that you’ll be very hot.

There is the abundant sun, the physical exertion involved in dirt biking, and the fact that you’ll be dressed in thick, heavy riding gear. After a few hours’ riding, you might feel like swallowing a couple litres of water in one greedy gulp. However, that is not the way to do it. It is recommended that you start drinking water straight away and consistently sip at it throughout the day.

In terms of actually riding the bike, you need to make sure you have your body position right and you will need to pace yourself.

If you are a long-time dirt bike rider, it might be tempting to go full throttle right away. However, Spain is a slightly different beast; the dirt here is red and dusty, as opposed to brown and sticky. This means that your bike will act differently on the straight and on the corners.

There are a few other things to consider too. Be sure to have the right amount of fuel, to bring your tools with you, and to tell someone when you are going dirt biking.

Spain is vast and some of the most exciting places to go dirt biking are far from any towns.

Spain’s aforementioned mountainous also means that gravity will not necessarily always be on your side. As a result, be sure not to leave your helmet on the ground, even for a moment.

Nothing is more bittersweet than watching your only means of head protection roll away from you and disappear into the awesome Spanish countryside. Dirt biking legend  Chris Birch recommends placing your helmet on your handlebars or footpeg if you’re stopping for a breather .

Dirt biking in Spain is a great opportunity to see the country differently. Many tourists spend their time in the cities or the coast of this great nation. Yet dirt biking offers you the opportunity to ride to hidden places deep within Spain itself.

Graham Jarvis , the legend Extreme Enduro rider and probably the first name that comes to most riders’ minds when they think of the crème de le crème of enduro talent. And it just got better…the legend has started a series of Jarvis signature Tours, with the first in Spain.

Set up by an absolute legend, if you want riding progression and an epic adventure this is the place to go.

dirt bike tours spain

Riding progression and an epic adventure GUARANTEED

The first thing to mention is that by going to Jarvis Signature it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to ride with the man himself, Graham – you can but the dates are limited and you of course pay more. I had an absolutely incredible time there even without him. Graham has years of riding experience to teach, however he’s also still a full-time professional rider and so had equipped his school with some absolutely nails riders to stand in and deliver the ultimate hard enduro coaching.

The main guy to mention here is Luke Copestake. He’s an experienced hard enduro rider and more akin to a mountain goat on a bike than one of us mere mortals. Luke has a great knack at being able to translate what he does riding into tuition and steps that you can apply. For the very, very large majority of riders you’re going to learn as much progression from Graham’s team as you will from him as he really has employed a fantastic calibre of guys so don’t threat if you can’t get a date with Jarvis.

Jarvis Signature team Luke Copestake

Taking your riding to the next level

Depending on your goals they’ll push you as little or as much as you like. Nail some new skills or simply enjoy some chilled riding, either way you’ll have one hell of a time.

They’ve cornered the market for guided tuition trail riding for sure and I think the tuition really is the reason to head to Jarvis. Yes, it’s an amazing experience riding in Spain, but the big push for me is the riding development. Many tour operators can give you the odd tip but being able to really push you, spot your bad habits and take you to the next level is rather unique for the Jarvis offering.

The team will push you as hard as you’re wanting to go!

Here’s a video from my jarvis signature tours experience:.

You can see how hard they pushed me, within my limits but outside my comfort zone. It was incredible.

In terms of bikes Jarvis of course has his factory racing hat on, opting for a fleet of the latest Husqvarna enduro bikes from across the range of sizes. They’re made of hard enduro!

Jarvis Signature Tours husqvarnas

In terms of location they couldn’t be close to the trails, in fact, you don’t even need to set a foot on roads. Straight out of the private compound and the trails start. They’ve got an ace setup too in a beautiful Spanish villa set in the remote mountains. I think the only thing they’re lacking after a tough day hard enduro riding is a pool or hot tub but then again, a few days our enduro riding certainly isn’t a spa break.

Terrain at Jarvis Signature Tours

You’re off-road immediately from the house with a mix of large fire tracks, small single track, technical and sweeping riverbeds and more hill climbs and descents that you can shake a stick at. You even have the chance to hard enduro style conquer rocky riverbeds, it’s incredible.

How far can you push it with Jarvis Signature Tours?

A huge attraction to me here is that Graham’s team know what it takes to push your riding to the next level. That means the guys know and are familiar with putting you into terrains that can at times be a big step up for you. But it’s ok, they are right there with you! They assess your capabilities and quickly know where they can safely push you. It’s not about reckless fun as at the end of the day no one wants to come home broken, and they certainly don’t want damaged bikes. But they do know how to safely push the limits and will talk you through exactly what needs to be done.

How to get there

Fly into Malaga in southern Spain and the team will collect you from the airport.

Check flight cost and availability here .

In four days riding I learned more like a few months’ worth of progression. Graham Jarvis you’ve made something special here! Just a short flight to Malaga and you’re there. This is the place to train!

Previous Dispatch From Thu Jun 20, 2024

As day seven of the 2024 Tour Divide begins, the endless burrito barrage sits heavy with riders, leaders widen their gap in both the men’s and women’s fields, an intense singlespeed showdown continues, and Laurens Ten Dam is forced to leave the course after a string of flats. Catch up in our latest 2024 Tour Divide Debrief here with another excellent set of photos by on-the-ground photographer Eddie Clark…

In shorter cross-country-esque races, there’s often talk about the “elastic breaking,” where, given enough time, one rider will put in enough accelerations that the second can no longer respond. A significant enough gap opens that it seems, barring disaster, that it won’t close again.

And while it seems like the elastic may have broken between the top three men and the top two women, this is Tour Divide, after all, and it only takes one bad mechanical or bit of mud or other mishap to bring everything back together again. But as gaps open, the elastic is stretching.

And then there’s the single-speed race.

Single-Speed Showdown

While there’s plenty of excitement going on at the front of both the men’s and women’s races, the single-speed contest is really stealing the limelight this year. On Tuesday afternoon, the three top single speeders, Zachary Del Greco, Jake Colantonio, and Johnny Price had come together in Helena after Del Greco, who’d led for most of the race, took an extended break. Alex Kowalski trailed them but by seemingly a significant margin.

2024 Tour Divide, Johnny Price

With improving weather, the leading trio moved at a similar pace over Lava Mountain, through Basin, and into Butte, with Price trailing just behind in fourth. Del Greco and Colantonio, the Croc-wearing wonder (how did he keep his feet warm?), arrived in Butte around 10 p.m. and were followed by Price, who went straight through town and stopped just south of it around 1:30 a.m. At about the same time Price bedded down, Kowalski, who appears to be wearing minimalist flip-flops for pedaling his bike, showed up in Butte, having closed the gap to the front. Amazingly, all four started moving almost the same time the following morning, just after 6:30 a.m.

2024 Tour Divide Singlespeed

From there, the lead trio changed up, with Kowalski, Del Greco, and Price staying close, and Colantonio dropping back just slightly as they navigated Fleecer Ridge into Wise River and cruised through the Bannock Valley. The lead three made it to Lima within an hour of each other with Kowalski leading the charge, arriving around 1 a.m. Colantonio stopped shy of town around 11 p.m.

Jake Colantonio

When morning came, Colantonio was moving just after 5 a.m. while the leading trio seemed to be having a bit of a sleep-in at Lima. Del Greco was first to leave around 7:45 a.m.

Women’s Race

Of the 225 riders registered for Tour Divide this year, 21 are women. So while the statistical probability of having a good men’s race at the front of the field is relatively high, the chances of two incredibly strong women pushing each other at the front end of the field in any given year is quite slim. So, seeing this showdown between Meaghan Hackinen and Ana Jager is actually quite special.

2024 Tour Divide Days 5-6, Eddie Clark

And if this author may inject a piece of personal commentary and opinion, she’d like to note that when she set the women’s course record on the route in 2012 with a time of 19 days and change, it was considered quite a fast time. To see two women battling it out and in front, with both of them at times in front of the Lael Wilcox record dot and on pace to go somewhere on the order of 16 or 17 days is just incredible. The men’s race has gotten faster over the years, but the sheer increase in speed in the women’s race is far more significant. And this author thinks that’s really neat.

After getting a hotel room in Butte, Hackinen made short work of Fleecer Ridge, which she called “sketchy and incredible,” saw a moose, and put in an absolutely massive day to make it all the way to Lima, even with a headwind. She rode from 6 a.m. until 2 a.m. and covered nearly 300 kilometers in the process. Meanwhile, Jager, who’d slept in Basin, just a few hours shy of Butte, the night before, made it to Elkhorn Hot Springs for the night, leaving the whole Bannock Valley, about a 100-mile distance, between her and the leader.

Jager started up earlier in the morning with a 4:30 a.m. departure time to close the gap, while Hackinen, recovering from her massive day, didn’t leave Lima until 8:30 a.m. It’s always interesting to see which riders prefer to ride late into the night and start with daylight versus those who bed down early and ride a few hours in the dark in the morning. Oftentimes, this difference is driven by a desire to get to town for a hotel room and even a shower.

2024 Tour Divide Day 6

After another massive day on the relative flats of southern Montana and northern Idaho, Hackinen arrived at Flagg Ranch in Yellowstone, and Jager made it to Mack’s Inn in Island Park. Both made it to their outposts of civilization around 12:30 a.m., with Jager getting a half-hour jump on Hackinen in the morning, departing around 6 a.m. to continue the chase.

Hackinen continues to maintain a lead on the Lael Wilcox record dot and has stretched her gap over Jager to 80 miles. She’s also sitting in fifth overall.

Behind the leading trio, Marie-Soleil Blais continues holding on to third place after dealing with some massive bike issues. According to Kathy Schoendoerfer of the Blackfoot Angler in Ovando, who continues to provide photos and updates, Blaise rolled in on Tuesday afternoon with frozen batteries, non-functional brakes, and some issues with her frame. She spent some time in Ovando getting her issues sorted, including using a hose clamp to address a problem with her frame. According to Schoendoerfer, Blais is “fighting mad now and plans to gain back her place in TDR history.”

After the leading trio of men left Elkhorn Hot Springs Tuesday morning, a lot happened in a fairly short period of time. While Justinas Leveika and Ulrich Bartholmoes continue to battle it out at the front of the field, both ahead of the Mike Hall record dot, the big drama of the last 48 hours came from Laurens Ten Dam and his tire issues.

Jay Petervary caught up with Ten Dam near Island Park, Idaho. Petervary’s video shows Ten Dam looking in fairly good spirits, exclaiming, “Yesterday night was cold! I came into Sawtell… and I saw the ice forming on the ground.” He went on to say, “This morning, my whole face was puffy.” But the former World Tour Pro seemed to take it all in stride.

But then he brought up his tire issues, saying, “Yesterday, I had two flats. I had to tube them both. The rear on is still leaking.” He seemed to almost laugh them off, saying, “I really want to reach Pinedale because that’s the next bike shop.”

One can deduce that he’s running the plastic lightweight tubes because when Petervary asked if he had patches and tape to help him limp to Pinedale, Ten Dam replied with an, “Eh,” and mentioned he didn’t think patches would stick to his tubes.

This was followed by Petervary giving the sage advice, “Just run high pressure; you’ll be fine.”

Unfortunately, not all was fine for Ten Dam, and he ended up hitching off route toward Jackson to get his tires sorted early afternoon on Wednesday. He documented the whole escapade on his Instagram stories, including taking his savior, Mike, out for a meal as a thank-you. Tour Divide rules allow riders to hitchhike off course for mechanical issues as long as they return to the same spot, which Ten Dam did.

Meanwhile, in front of him, Leveika and Bartholmoes pressed on. Leaving Lima, Bartholmoes found the mud the area is infamous for, posting a photo of a mud-covered bike with the caption, “Look whom I found.” It’s worth noting that after nearly a full week of racing, Bartholmoes is still using proper grammar in his IG posts. Both riders, riding in fairly close proximity to each other, made it out of Montana and into Idaho in short order, so the mud couldn’t have been that awful.

2024 Tour Divide Days 5-6, Eddie Clark

It’s worth noting that Bartholmoes stopped just after Mack’s Inn around 10:30 p.m. for a sleep while Leveika made a massive all-night push to make it through Yellowstone to Flagg Ranch. This area is known for its bears, so rolling through the night is something that most riders choose to avoid. He stopped from about 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the very touristy Flagg Ranch, presumably for a short nap and meal before heading out, now with a small but real gap over Bartholmoes.

Over the years, several riders have tried the all-night push to gain a gap on their competition. Sometimes the elastic breaks and the gap stays, and sometimes the sleep-deprived rider craters spectacularly and the race at the front comes back together. Leveika seems to be pushing the low-sleep levels more than other riders in this year’s event.

2024 Tour Divide Days 5-6, Eddie Clark

After a full day of riding, going over Towgatee Pass and Union Pass, the final bits of grizzly country on the route, Bartholmoes stopped for the night in Pinedale, and Leveika pushed on until after the Big Sandy River, potentially staying the night at the rest stop on the side of the highway.

Both riders face the Great Basin today before heading into Colorado.
