Some of the biggest comedians coming to Bristol before the end of 2023
They're playing at some of Bristol's best venues - but tickets won't be available for long
- 15:29, 18 SEP 2023
Bristol looks set to be full of laughs before the year is through, as some of the biggest stars in the world of comedy grace the stages of the city. They'll be playing at the likes of the soon-to-reopen Bristol Beacon , the Redgrave Theatre, Bristol Hippodrome and Bristol Old Vic, to name a few.
Comedy tickets sell out fast, so we can't guarantee that tickets to all of the shows listed below will still be available at time of reading. But it's well worth a try.
So, whether you want to see just how new dad Jack Whitehall is finding fatherhood, want an honest lesson or two on life from Ricky Gervais, or simply feel brave enough to try and bag a seat in the front row of a Myra DuBois show, here's where, when and how you might be able to catch your favourites before the year is through...

Jack Whitehall
Where: Bristol Hippodrome
When: Saturday, October 14 - Sunday, October 15, 2023
Tickets: From £40.72, subject to a transaction fee of £3.80 - here
Jack Whitehall will be bringing his new show 'Settle Down' to Bristol and says it will be full of plenty of material about the big changes that have happened in his life, most notably becoming a father earlier this month .
Ricky Gervais
Where: Bristol Beacon
When: Monday, December 11 - Tuesday, December 12
Tickets: Join the waiting list for tickets here
Award-winning comedian, actor, writer, and director Ricky Gervais will bring his Armageddon World Tour to the newly-reopened Bristol Beacon in December. It's no surprise that tickets for this show have been in huge demand.
Myra DuBois
Where: Redgrave Theatre
When: Saturday, October 21
Tickets: £19.25 - here
Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe, Myra will be bringing her show 'Be Well' to Bristol in October and, if opinions from the likes of Graham Norton and Boy George are anything to go by, Bristolians are in for a treat.
Where: Propyard
When: Sunday, October 1
Tickets: £20 +booking fee - here
Kicking off Propyard's 'Proper Comedy' series with a one-night-only performance on the first Sunday in October, Trigger Happy funny man Dom Joly will return to the stage following a hiatus, giving fans a highly-anticipated chance to see him live. Before the pandemic-interrupted tour hits the road again, Dom will make a pit-stop in Bristol to talk about his exploits as a serial globe-trotter and seeker of dangerous travel spots.
Milton Jones
When: Sunday, November 5
The second instalment of Proper Comedy at Propyard will commence on this date, with Mock the Week regular and one-liner-legend Milton Jones. "Dressed in his Hawaiian shirt best and rocking a messy hair-do to capture his cartoon-like persona, Milton perfectly encompasses the dryness of British humour. Expect unpredictable monologues that mirror that of a mad scientist on the brink of discovery as well as quick wit and total chaos for a night that will leave audiences in stitches (the good kind, of course)."
James Acaster
Where & when: Bristol Old Vic from Sunday, October 1 - Wednesday, October 4 & Rough Trade on Tuesday, October 3
Tickets: Old Vic has sold out. Join Rough Trade waiting list here
One of the country's top (and most hard-working) comedians is coming back to Bristol to perform his latest material at the Bristol Old Vic . He's also partaking in an in-store Q&A at Rough Trade Bristol - a unique event to celebrate the release of Temps' album 'Party Gator Purgatory'.
Ed Gamble & James Acaster: Off Menu Live
When: Thursday, October 12
Tickets: Tickets have now sold out, but you can join the waiting list here
Ed Gamble and James Acaster are taking the Dream Restaurant on the road for the first ever live tour of their smash-hit podcast, Off Menu. Join the genie waiter and maître d’ as they quiz a guest about their dream cuisine – their favourite ever starter, main course, dessert, side dish and drink (not in that order) – live on stage.
Featuring a different special guest each night, and a slightly different version of James’ Diet Coke story. Since launching in December 2018, Off Menu has become one of the biggest podcasts in the country, winning multiple awards, regularly topping the podcast charts and racking up over 120 million downloads.
Where: Bristol Old Vic
When: Sunday, October 29
Tickets: From £18.15 - here
Three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Josie Long is bringing her new show, 'Re-enchantment' to Bristol at the end of October. It is described as being "stand-up infused with humanity, compassion and some brief political rants".
Where: St George's
Tickets: Tickets for his Bristol show have now sold out
Rhys Darby, one of New Zealand's most successful comedy exports, known for 'Flight of the Conchords', the 'Jumanji' franchise and his current role in 'Our Flag Means Death' (alongside long-time collaborator Taika Waititi), is celebrating his silver jubilee in stand-up comedy. And he's bringing this retrospective show to the UK this year - and Bristol's on the list.
Mark Watson
Where: Tobacco Factory Theatres
Tickets: £20 - here
Mark Watson is bringing his new show 'Search' to Bristol this November . Both a dad and a kid himself, around the midpoint of his life, the Taskmaster star and multiple award-winner – now also famous as one-third of YouTube cult sensation No More Jockeys – returns.
He’ll consider the search for meaning that we’re all on, with or without Google. There’ll be a lot of jokes, and a show that’s different every night, hosts say.

DRUNK AND DISRUPTIVE CUSTOMERS
Customers who turn up on the door who we believe to be drunk will not be admitted. From experience, customers who are drunk even before the show has started are invariably problematic later on, usually heckling, talking during the show or just being a general nuisance.
If someone in the group you have organised is drunk at the door they will be refused entry without being refunded. This does not mean the whole group is refused entry but if you decide you don't wish to come in because one of your group has been turned away then that does not mean you are collectively entitled to a refund, if a member of your group is disruptive during the show, we will remove the said person without hesitation and no refunds will be given to anyone if you wish to leave with the disruptive guest, so we ask that you respect all other guest and artists.
DURING THE SHOW
While we want you to enjoy our shows at Smoke & Mirrors it is important to remember that customers also need to consider other people in the room. So, bearing this in mind, we request that:
VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ:
Mobile phones are switched to silent during the show as making and receiving calls, including texting, is rude and inconsiderate.
There is no talking during the show as this is disruptive and annoying for those sat around you and for the performer.
There is no heckling or constant interruptions of the magicians or comedians. People have paid to listen to the act not to listen to someone else in the audience.
And finally, owing to the proliferation of portable recording devices, it is requested that customers don't make any audio or video recordings of acts or use flash photography during the show.
Customers who break these house rules will be asked politely to refrain from heckling or talking during the show. Persistent offenders will be asked to leave without being refunded.
Also please note shows are strictly for over 18's as graphic language will be used throughout the show, so if you are easily offended by swearing this show may not be for you, we do offer a family for all ages you can find these details on our webpage
PRIVATE BOOKINGS
Please note that if you are booking the whole theatre for an event we as a theatre will seat all guests and allocate tables as your guests arrive this helps with congestion within the theatre, we understand that some of your guests may not want to sit in the front row but as this is a Magic Show and not stand up comedy not one of your guests will be made to do anything they do not wish to do, but we ask that your guests are informed that the show requires audience participation, so by informing your guests that they could be on stage would be of great help to the magicians, also if you have anything the magicians need to know before the show we would be happy to pass this is on to the magicians to make sure the show is even more special.

You Can Laugh Your Socks Off At This New Underground Stand-Up Comedy Venue In Bristol
Have an absolute hoot at this intimate, New York-style comedy venue.
Expected to give Bristol’s thriving stand-up comedy scene a boost is the city’s first New York-style comedy venue set up by two local comedians, promising to ‘take comedy to a new level’. Based in an atmospheric basement in Bristol’s independent heartland of Gloucester Road, Bristol Comedy Den is the brainchild of comedians, Greg Winfield and Burt Williamson.
The Bristol Comedy Den has already hosted a number of sold-out gigs over the past two months, but now the pair are now adding double shows on Friday nights to their weekly offering. The city’s first specialist weekly comedy club can be found downstairs at the Sidney & Eden cocktail bar on Gloucester Road, offering an intimate and up-close night of laughter.
“Bristol Comedy Den is all about putting the best comedians in the country in the best possible environment for comedy, making for an incredibly authentic and unique experience for the audience, ” said Greg Winfield. “Capacity is limited to 55 in the purpose-built basement room, it’s up close and personal and every show is something very special.
“The cellar isn’t just cosy but also has the atmosphere of underground comedy clubs that you find in New York. I’d describe the vibe we’ve created as ‘in your face’, controlled chaos – it’s definitely not a night at the theatre.”
While Bristol boasts an established and vibrant comedy scene, until now it’s lacked a regular and dedicated venue where an independent operator could stage weekly shows with established comics. As well as allowing people to enjoy the finest up-and-coming and established comedians on the circuit, the Bristol Comedy Den also allows guests to order takeaway food to the venue, washed down with cocktails and craft beers served upstairs.
“We’re bringing top quality comedians to the city on a regular basis,” said Burt Williamson. “Locals will be able to see in person highly rated comics like Helen Bauer who recently featured on ‘Live At The Apollo’ and Joe Sutherland, who’s a regular on the Comedy Central’s ‘Roast Battle’.”
The launch of Bristol Comedy Den has also won the enthusiastic support of some well-known stars from the UK’s comedy circuit, including Bristol-based Stu Goldsmith, who has appeared on ‘Live At The Apollo’ and ‘Have I Got News For You’. Goldsmith said: “Bristol’s comedy scene is exploding at the moment, and Bristol Comedy Den is a big part of that. A terrific club with a really welcoming atmosphere.”
Plus, comedian Chloe Petts, as seen on Jonathan Ross’s ‘Comedy Club’ and Dave’s ‘Hypothetical’, said: “The Bristol Comedy Den is the perfect intimate comedy venue; expertly hosted by Greg and Burt. The room was packed and I had an absolute hoot. The crowd were the perfect blend of comedy savvy and really up for it. And we were all spurred on by the amazing craft beers served upstairs.”
Doors open at 7:30pm on Wednesday nights with the show running from 8pm to 10pm and tickets costing £7. Starting from December 3, the Bristol Comedy Den opens on Friday nights with the first show running from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, and the second show from 10pm to midnight, with tickets costing £12.50 for one show.

Full description.
Discover the locations of all of your favourite Only Fools and Horses scenes.
Bristol is the home for some of the TV show’s most iconic moments and settings. Fans are sure to recognise the Whitemead House tower block. Throughout the show’s life, this building featured as Nelson Mandela House , where the Trotters’ apartment was. Around the corner from this are also the lock-up garages where Del Boy and Rodney kept their swag . It was in their garage that they found an old pocket watch that made them their long-awaited fortune .
Close by, in the Ashton area of Bristol, is the Miles Motor Company , which featured as Boycie’s successful car showroom . Smiley Miley , who owned the business in real life, was a former BBC Radio 1 DJ .
In the same neighbourhood is the Ashton Gate stadium . The stadium’s car park stood in for the famous Peckham market . The Trotter brothers set up here to attempt selling some dodgy skiing gear . Another notable marketplace is the Broadwalk Shopping Centre , on the outskirts of the city. Here, Del Boy tried unsuccessfully to flog some defective toy dolls .
While travelling between locations, you’ll be treated to some of your favourite Only Fools and Horses episodes.
One of the most popular is Heroes and Villains . In this episode, the Trotters roam the streets dressed as Batman and Robin . The Only Fools and Horses Locations Tour from Bristol also visits all of the important locations from this episode. From Penn Street , where the famous three-wheeled, yellow van broke down . To the Backfields , where the masked Trotter brothers scare off some muggers who are trying to steal a handbag. Later in the same episode, Rodney is chased by one of the same muggers , only to be saved by Del Boy. Park Avenue was the filming location for the whole sequence.
And there are plenty more iconic settings to feast your eyes on. Like the White Horse in Bedminster , which doubled as the local Peckham watering hole, the Nag’s Head . You can also see the Belgo , which featured in the fan favourite episode Yuppy Love . Many will remember this as the bar where Del Boy fell through an open hatch .
With all of these and more, you’re sure to enjoy a day of laughs and entertainment. Lovely jubbly!

Ian McKellen will not return to the national tour of “Players Kings” after an on-stage fall two weeks ago led him to be hospitalized.
The actor had previously announced that he would not be finishing the play’s West End shows, but was expected to make a return to the production for its tour of Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich and Newcastle. But the official X account of “Players Kings” shared the news on Monday that McKellen will need more time to recover. David Semark will take over McKellen’s role of Sir John Falstaff.

McKellen was hospitalized after falling off the stage during a performance on June 17. The 85-year-old was reportedly performing a battle scene when he fell, and the crowd was evacuated and the rest of the performance canceled.
In a statement the following day, McKellen said his recovery would be “complete and speedy.”
“I want to thank everyone for their kind messages and support,” McKellen said. “Since the accident, during a performance of Player Kings last night, my injuries have been diagnosed and treated by a series of experts, specialists and nurses working for the National Health Service. To them, of course, I am hugely indebted. They have assured me that my recovery will be complete and speedy and I am looking forward to returning to work.”
