In the Classroom

In the first year, you’ll make several short films, exercising creative control and learning to collaborate. You will study cinematic visual storytelling. In addition, you’ll deepen your understanding of film and television history and the contemporary film and television industry through graduate seminars and screenings. At the end of both semesters, graduate faculty members will constructively critique your work.

In your last year, you will collaborate on the creation of an original series. You will also develop and write a long form project, either a feature screenplay or show bible for a series. At the same time, you’ll work with two thesis advisors to develop and shoot your thesis film. In Thesis Workshop, you’ll explore your thesis material through individualized rehearsals, pre-visualization exercises, exploratory shoots, critique, and discussion. This time of exploration will help you further develop the script and pre-production for your thesis film, which you’ll direct and screen as part of your thesis requirement.

Thesis:

Your thesis project is an original piece of media – a short film, a short television pilot, or multiple short webisodes – that brings together everything you’ve learned in your courses. You will write a script, create visualization materials, develop a casting plan, collaborate with other creatives as shoot your project , and screen at an end-of-semester premiere screening . Thesis projects have a maximum length of 15 minutes.

Past MFA thesis projects have screened in numerous festival s and won awards. Some recent examples:

  • “Close Ties to Home Country,” directed by Akanksha Cruczynski (’21) and produced by Felicia Ferrara (’21) , screened at Sundance, Telluride, The Chicago International Film Festival and others, and received a Silver Student Academy Award .
  • “ Abhagir Swargo (Heaven for the Unfortunate) ” directed by Tridev (’21) , was included on the 2022 Yugo BAFTA Student Awards Live Action Short List .
  • “ Sant é ,” produced and dire cted by Taylor Dominique Mason, was an official selectio n in the 2022 Black Harvest Film Festival.
  • “Brother,” directed by Aleksei Borovokov (’22) and produced by Chris Sonnenschein (’22) won “Best Short Film” at Pride Queer Film Festival, “Best International Short Film” at Out & Loud – Pune International Queer Film Festival, and was featured in 10 other festivals.
  • “Jack and Anna,” directed by Ksenia Naughton, was featured in over 40 film festivals and won “B est Global Short: Beyond the Rainbow Award at the 2019 SCAD Savannah Film Festival ” and a Silver Telly Award.

Outside the Classroom

You’ll have endless opportunities to engage with Columbia College Chicago’s passionate film community. Here are a few examples of exciting events that take place outside the classroom:

Taylor Swift Eras Tour to end in December

Taylor Swift has finally set an end date for her record-breaking Eras Tour, which she revealed Thursday at the 100th performance of the international sensation.

Swift, 34, made the announcement while performing at Anfield, Stadium in Liverpool, England.

“This is the very first time I’ve ever acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December,” the Grammy winner said, according to a tweet making the rounds online.

Ahead of the reveal, Swifties awaited what they thought was going to be a different kind of update — given that the superstar often marks milestones with special announcements or Easter eggs.

June 13 didn’t just signify the landmark 100th performance of the Eras Tour but Swift’s half-birthday. The “Style” singer was born on Dec. 13, 1989 — with her birth year notably serving as the title of her beloved 2014 album — and 13 is famously her favorite number.

“Me thinking Taylor’s going to announce Rep(utation) (Taylor’s Version) for the 100th show but she’s really going to sit down at that piano and play yoyok (“You’re on Your Own, Kid”) for the 100th time,” tweeted one fan, referring to the rerecorded “Reputation” album that fans expected Swift to release last year.

Another fan joked Swift woke up Thursday “to see she’s somehow announcing (Taylor’s version of Reputation) and (her) debut (album), giving us a (music video), announcing more (tour) dates, giving us (The Tortured Poets Department) part 3 (and) a new unknown album all during tonight’s 100th show.”

The time has come: Taylor Swift announced that the “Eras Tour” is ending in December.

During the 100th concert of the “Eras Tour” , which took place in Liverpool on June 13, Swift let the crowd know that the seemingly never-ending “Eras Tour” is wrapping up, to the dismay of many fans.

“You know, a lot of you were like, ‘Well, how are you going to celebrate the 100th show?’” Swift said during her “All Too Well” speech from the Anfield Stadium stage. “And for me, the celebration of the 100th show means this is the very first time I’ve ever acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December. Like, that’s it.”

The “Eras Tour” kicked off in Glendale, Ariz. on March 17, 2023, and as of now, the final scheduled concert is on Dec. 8 in Vancouver, British Columbia . The final show will be her 152nd show.

Because her final shows are highly coveted, that means ticket prices are going to skyrocket.
