 WHERE IS CABBAGETOWN?

Today, the boundaries are generally considered to be Bloor Street/St. James Cemetery on the north to Dundas Street (or Shuter for some) on the south, and from The Don River on the east to Sherbourne Street on the west, excluding St. Jamestown and Regent Park.

Three-forty Carlton Street is an 1887 bay-and-gable gem that’s had lots of changes, but none done as lovingly as by its new owners, Jane Renwick and Kaley O’Neill, who have transformed this great example of Victorian two-colour brickwork from shabby to chic.

“We closed the deal May 2011, and then found that because of structural problems, poor insulation, inadequate and older electrical, and only one bathroom, building our dream home was going to be much more involved than we expected,” says Ms. Renwick, a real estate marketing consultant and homemaker for two-year-old son, Brady, and eight-year-old peppy poodle Leroy.

But the final finishes on this three-storey stunner will be done by the time it’s showcased in the Cabbagetown Tour of Homes tomorrow (Sept. 15).

“The house underwent some minor renos in the 1970s [based on a newspaper we found in one of the walls], and it has definitely had a few other cosmetic updates over the years, but we basically had to entirely gut it,” Mr. O’Neill says. “We think this was originally a worker’s home for one of the local factories, but that’s all we know about its history.”

The style of their house can be described as comfy contemporary. Modern, yes, but the owners have kept some elements of the original house such as the stairs and the vestibule, crown mouldings and some stained glass. Some original studs were used to build the fireplace mantel on the second floor.

Many delightful curios, objets d’art and family heirlooms complete the house and give it a personal feel: An antique apple tree ladder in the family room on the second floor, a late-19th-century violin, an African ostrich egg encased in glass and set atop a working Heintzman square grand piano in the living room. The 1885 Brazilian rosewood piano, a rare example of true artisan’s craft and seemingly made to fit by the bay window, provides a visual anchor to the space. It’s a favourite heirloom for Ms. Renwick. “My mother bought it about 30 years ago and we all took piano lessons on it as children, so it’s a symbol of family and continuity. It’s also a great conversation piece.”

The hardwoods throughout the home are African acacia, a dark brown heartwood tinged with vibrant reddish orange and accented with light yellows. “We spent two months in Africa, and our floors, as well as that large ostrich egg, are reminders of our fabulous times in that continent,” Mr. O’Neill says. Ms. Renwick points out acacia’s durability (it’s harder than red oak), scratch-resistance and reasonable price tag.

“Most of the items in our house have deep personal meaning to us,” she says. “They’ve either been passed down as family heirlooms, like the piano, violin or our dining room set, or are photographs or souvenirs from our trips, or pictures painted by my sister or Kaley’s grandmother. We’re now at a stage where we’ve collected enough experiences for our house to be authentically us.”

Every wall in the house, except Brady’s bedroom, is painted in the same shade of grey. “We created a custom shade of light grey because we wanted to unify the colour scheme throughout the house to give the illusion of space,” Mr. O’Neill says. With an open-concept first floor, and parts of the second (the family room and entertainment centre), and an open-plan third-floor master bedroom, using one colour helps to create flow. “It’s also an elegant, fresh look,” he says.

Exterior freshening involved pulling down ivy clinging to the walls, repointing brickwork and the installation of a “living” parking pad that incorporates fragrant creeping thyme embedded within the concrete grid of Turfstone pavement. “Thyme is a hardy plant that allows us to have additional greenspace,” Mr. O’Neill says. They also replaced the old decking with grass and patio stones.

A must-have was the third-floor master. “[Three-forty] Carlton was 2,002 square feet when we purchased it,” says Ms. Renwick. “After going to the Committee of Adjustment, we were granted approval, with support from neighbours, Heritage Preservation Services, the local councillor’s office and the Planning Department, to increase the floor area to 2,250 square feet, which meant we could convert dead space into a skylit, livable area.”

To do that, the homeowners enlisted Toronto architect Michael Cicerani and a structural engineer to raise the two peaked roofs of the original design to create one flat roof. “By doing this, we are able to maintain the same footprint and make use of area that was previously attic space under the slanted roofs,” Ms. Renwick says. They also added a bathroom, walk-in closet and fourth bedroom/office to the third floor.

The couple claims they enjoyed working with HPS, and appreciate the aesthetic of living in a Heritage District. “But seeking the proper approvals … is definitely time consuming,” Mr. O’Neill says with a sigh.

Despite challenges, you know you’re in for a special Victorian treat when you realize the owners of this house embrace having a fire hydrant as a focal point of their front garden. “We landscaped the garden with yellow roses to ‘match’ the hydrant,” Ms. Renwick says. Boxwoods border the tiny garden, which, despite its size, includes yew shrubs, Japanese maple, hydrangeas and a butterfly bush. “A definite butterfly and hummingbird magnet,” Ms. Renwick says.

The 35th Cabbagetown Tour of Homes, which attracts about 700 visitors each year, is the main fundraising event of the Cabbagetown Preservation Association. Doors and gardens are open Sept. 15 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. See cabbagetownpa.ca for ticket sales.

Cabbagetown annual tour of homes.

September 3, 2010 43 Views

Every once in a while it helps to have an architect in the family.

When John White (who is an architect) and Gilles Huot (who isn’t) decided to abandon condo living on Carlton St. for a cozy 1884 bay ‘n gable townhouse on Metcalfe St. in Old High Cabbagetown about five years ago, Huot told his partner, “ok, but here’s the list of what I’d like to do to the house.” His injunction was dutifully complied with during major renovations last year and they are now ready to show the newly refurbished home to the public by participating in the Cabbagetown Tour of Homes on Sept. 19.

Although this is their first time in as a stop on the tour, they’ve been active participants in the Cabbagetown Preservation Association for some time already.

“I’ve been on the board of CPA since January,” says Huot, “and the Tour of Homes is our big fundraiser so of course we’re proud to participate. What we find happens with Cabbagetown is that a lot of people have a lot of pride in their neighbourhood, you only have to walk on the streets and look at the gardens to see that. We made the renovation last year and felt that we should be in.”

They are very content with the results of the renovation. “One of our neighbours told us, ‘You know, you have managed to make your house look like what everybody wants these houses to look like,’” says Wright. “It’s modern in its wide-open spaces, but it’s traditional in detail.”

They have preserved most of the original layout and many of the original architectural features including the main staircase and newel post—“every time we touch it going upstairs we feel a connection with this neighbourhood’s history”—and the brass armature around the coal-burning fireplace which is learning to like a greener diet. They have also been lucky to preserve most of the original stained glass windows, a hallmark of the era. Each has a bird in its central panel.

“Ralph Lauren would have said, every man should have a bird in the house,” says Huot, “and we have several.”

The renovations include a new third-storey master bed/bath converted from an attic with drop-down ladder access (which must have perplexed generations of slightly tipsy student roomers under previous administrations). The new staircase upstairs actually features a newel post rescued from the house next door.

The house also boasts a “streamlined” modern kitchen, and a lovely secluded garden between the house and the old driving shed (now commonly known as a “garage”). Thanks to some engineering legacy issues, the job at times resembled a Near Eastern archaeological dig.

“It got interesting,” said Huot. “We’re the north half of a duplex, but our house is four feet lower than the neighbouring half. Besides that, only the front of the house has a real, original foundation and full basement. The rear was built on wood piles and it sank. The piles had rotted away from six feet to three inches. At one point the studding had come right away from the floor joists and all that was holding the place together was the quarter-round. We jacked up the rear of the house and put a four-foot crawl space underneath it joined to the basement.”

“There was a little crawl space there before. My mother thought it was really creepy,” says White. “She kept wondering if there were bodies in there. Actually when we were putting in the crawl space we found two pairs of very old skis and a TV remote control. No idea at all how that got there. When we were digging down the north side wall, the entire outside ground was full of coal—there’d been a coal chute there—and it looked hard when you dug it out but we made a big pile of it and it melted in the sunlight. We also found an old cast-iron toy airplane and the coffin of the dog that someone had buried in the back yard. We imagined there might be some priceless grave goods in there but we decided, unlike Pandora, not to go opening any boxes.”

The cumulative sinkage has had a visible effect on the back garden. Originally the owners could look out the back window onto level ground, and it was a few steps up from the kitchen to the yard. The result of the reno is a delightful terraced effect upward to the driving shed.

Huot and White are very proud of the integrated townhouse architecture on the street. They considered removing the stucco on their own brickwork but decided not to, as the brick is hidden under layers of paint beneath the stucco and restorations of neighbouring houses have shown the local brickwork to be brittle.

“These were actually rooming houses for years, and they just stuck one coat of paint on after another,” says White. “The street was really seedy for a long time and was thought to be one of the most dangerous in the neighbourhood. I remember my mother telling me as a kid, ‘Don’t go up Metcalfe St.!’”

It’s advice worth musing on—if only for nostalgia’s sake—as you visit the quiet, residential avenue on the Tour of Homes.

The tour takes place on Sept. 19. For information and tickets, visit www.cabbagetownpa.ca or call (416) 921-0857.

The Annual Cabbagetown Tour Of Homes 2023

For those who are captivated by history and curious about architecture – if not entirely housing-obsessed, like I am – it’s a real treat when you get the opportunity to take a peek inside unique and historic homes.

After all, houses each have stories to tell, and opening the front door of a residence is a bit like opening the front cover of a book. This becomes even more true when the homes that catch your eye have unique features, character, charm, and history.

This is what’s so special about the annual Cabbagetown Tour of Homes , where you can explore some of Cabbagetown’s eclectic and architecturally fascinating domiciles. The 2023 tour is all set to roll on Sunday September 17, from 12:00pm – 4:00pm.  Here’s their poster with the important details:

Supporting The Cabbagetown Preservation Association

This volunteer-run, self-guided annual tour returns year after year for a couple of reasons.

First, it draws attention to Cabbagetown’s gorgeous, aging housing stock, and second, it’s also a fundraiser for the Cabbagetown Preservation Association (CPA).

The Cabbagetown Tour of Homes began in the early 1970s as an event organized by realtors to showcase Cabbagetown’s Victorian architecture (which comprises “the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in all of North America” – Wiki ). The original intent was to demonstrate the potential of the neighbourhood in those early days of gentrification, both as a means to attract investors and to convince Torontonians that these once-grand but now-crumbling gracious dwellings needed restoration and rejuvenation. Fast forward fifty years to today, and Cabbagetown has become a jewel among the patchwork of Toronto’s neighbourhoods.

The Cabbagetown Tour Of Homes

The Cabbagetown Tour of Homes features 9 residences annually, nominated by Cabbagetown residents and selected by the CPA. Included with your ticket is a map that will help guide you around the neighbourhood and through the tour. The brochure provides information about each of the homes, as well as points of interest in the neighbourhood. As an extra bonus, ticket holders are offered also discounts and deals at select local businesses. The tour is self-guided, so you can start and finish wherever you wish – and linger longer in the residences that really catch your eye.

One of the greatest allures of Cabbagetown is enjoying the serenity of its lush tree-lined streetscapes, the distinctive character of Victorian Bay and Gable Architecture, and the exceptional urban gardens you’ll see as you stroll. In fact, did you know that the CPA also has an annual garden competition called Streetscapes in Bloom ? It happens every year in June!

The Cabbagetown Preservation Association Presents: Hidden Gardens & Private Spaces Tour 2024

cabbagetown house tour

I don’t know about you, but the mention of secret garden spaces definitely piques my curiosity! I’m conjuring images of magical enclaves, green glens, and beautiful, lush retreats. So as I work out my plans for this upcoming weekend, I know Cabbagetown’s Hidden Gardens & Private Spaces Tour will be a part of them!

cabbagetown house tour

It’s fitting that Cabbagetown would have such a noteworthy garden tour, as gardening and outdoor spaces have long been a substantial part of its history. Cabbagetown’s early residents, many of whom where Irish immigrants fleeing the potato famine in the mid 19 th century, used their front lawns in the neighbourhood to grow cabbage and other produce.

The gardens of Cabbagetown have come a long way since those early days, and there are some true gems hidden away in this verdant neighbourhood!

Check out the Cabbagetown Preservation Association here !

cabbagetown house tour

Lovely, stately Cabbagetown has a lively preservation association. As a Historical Conservation District (HCD), the ‘hood has some of the city’s more storied and stately streetscapes, with impressive architecture to behold. The Cabbagetown Preservation Association hosts a biennial self-guided tour of some of the most notable ones, which I wrote about last year here: The Cabbagetown Preservation Association Presents: The Cabbagetown Tour Of Homes 2023 . The next home tour is slated for 2025.

The garden tour is the main event this year, coming up on Sunday, June 2nd, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

On offer, will be a series of beautiful garden spaces, curated by Cabbagetown’s community gardeners. The tour is self-guided, and you can begin and end wherever it suits you.

It’s a unique way to get a sneak peek at the elegant & beautiful properties in this HCD that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Gardening is a craft that’s almost always done out of love for the process, by those who enjoy the meaningful results that patience, passion, and effort can yield. That’s why this tour is bound to be inspiring!

cabbagetown house tour

In addition to the community gardeners, popular CBC gardening expert Paul Zammit will be on hand to chat and offer advice, along with a selection of Toronto Master Gardeners at various locations.

With your ticket ($25/each, or a book of 5 for $100), you will gain access to the gardens that have been selected for the tour, a map with addresses for the gardens, background information for each stop, and special promotions at local stores and eateries. Why not make a day of it, and wander- and then take in the rest of Cabbagetown’s wonderful amenities?

Tickets can be purchased online here , or in select stores (TBA). With an online purchase, you get a receipt that you can swap for a ticket at The Great Mallard (503 Parliament Street) or on the day of the event, at CPA Tent (corner of 493 Parliament Street).

See you on the garden path!

Since 1989, I’ve steered my career through a real estate market crash and burn; survived a slow painful cross-country recession; completed an M.E.S. graduate degree from York University called ‘Planning Housing Environments’; executed the concept, sales & marketing of multiple new condo and vintage loft conversions; and guided hundreds of clients through the purchase and sale of hundreds of freehold and condominium dwellings across the original City of Toronto. From a gritty port industrial city into a glittering post-industrial global centre, I’ve navigated the ebbs and flows of a property market as a consistent Top Producer. And I remain as passionate about it today as when I started.

Serving first and second-time Buyers, relocations, renovators, and those building their long-term property portfolios, our mandate is to help clients choose the property that will realize the highest future return on their investment while ensuring the property best serves their practical needs and their dream of “Home” during their ownership.

Are you considering selling? We welcome providing you with a comprehensive assessment free of charge, including determining your Buyer profile, ways to optimize your return on investment, and tailoring the listing process to suit your circumstances. Welcome Mat: Indian Village Home & Garden Tour coming up June 8-9

The 48th Annual Indian Village Home & Garden Tour is scheduled June 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June 9 from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Historic home tour is in its 48th year

Five historic homes — four of which have never been on the tour before — as well as two gardens, a historic bed and breakfast, two churches and a school make up the 48th Annual Indian Village Home & Garden Tour, scheduled June 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June 9 from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Settled around the turn of the century, Indian Village is one of Detroit’s most elegant and historic neighborhoods, with most homes built between 1895 and 1920. The tour is the second oldest of its kind in Michigan, preceded only by the one in Marshall. Houses are clustered on three streets just east of Belle Isle — Iroquois, Seminole and Burns — between Jefferson and Mack. Tickets are $40 per person and are available on tour days at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church (8625 E. Jefferson) or in advance. Visit  historicindianvillage.org .

Those winners will then compete for the grand prize — a $200 gift certificate to English Gardens — through online voting by Homestyle readers from Sept. 3 to Sept. 10. A winner will be announced Sept. 13. Enter at detroitnews.com/gardenphotos24 . Don't forget to tell us a bit about what makes the garden special to you, what flowers you used, or what inspires you. Check Homestyle's Welcome Mat June 7 for the first weekly winner.
