Blues Traveler is an American rock, blues and jam band, formed by John Popper and Brendan Hill in 1987, from Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.

Originally formed under the moniker The Establishment by harmonicist, singer and guitarist John Popper and drummer Brendan Lee, the band’s earliest releases were in the form of cassette tapes featuring original songs as well as covers, including Van Morrison’s “Gloria". The band began jamming regularly and building a repertoire of songs before moving to New York City and performing on the club circuit, soon making a name for themselves as relentless live performers.

With a line-up consisting of Popper, Lee, guitarist Chan Kinchla, and bassist Bobby Sheehan, the band signed with A&M Records who released their self-titled debut album in 1990, and their subsequent album “Travelers & Thieves” in 1991. Following a dangerous motorcycle accident lead-man Popper was unable to perform for a number of months, however returned to release the band’s third studio album, aptly named “Save His Soul”.

The band’s fourth full-length “Four” in 1994 represented a mainstream breakthrough for Blues Traveler, despite poor sales to begin with. The 1995 Grammy Award winning single “Run-Around”, taken from the album, became one of the year’s most popular and best-selling singles and catapulted the album “Four” to popularity. Following the release the band played ’94’s Woodstock Festival and opened for the Rolling Stones. In an attempt to capture the magic of the band’s live performances they release the double album “Live from the Fall” in 1996, followed by their fifth full-length “Straight on Till Morning” in 1997.

In 1999 bassist Bobby Sheehan was found dead in his home with cocaine, Valium and heroin in his system, deemed an accidental suicide, he was eventually replaced by Kinchla’s younger brother Tad. Along with new keyboardist Ben Wilson, Blues Traveler released an EP entitled “Decisions of the Sky: A Traveler’s Tale of Sun and Storm”, followed by their sixth full-length “Bridge” in 2001.

With a move away from A&M to Sanctuary Records, the band released “Truth Be Told” in 2003, followed by another live album “Live on the Rocks” the year after. Blues Traveler subsequently released the Jay-Bennett-produced “Bastardos!” in 2005, a cover album of their own songs “Cover Yourself” in 2007, “North Hollywood Shootout” on the label Verve Forecast, and the group’s 11th studio album “Suzie Crack the Whip” in June 2012.

Live reviews

If you like the blues, chances are you’re gonna like Blues Traveler- and if you’ve never heard frontman John Popper’s second-to-none harmonica-playing skills before, prepare to be blown away.

The band formed in the early 1990s, along with the wave of Grateful Dead-esuqe jam bands like Phish and Widespread Panic, and have been playing the blues and, erm, travelling (back in the day they gained a reputation for non-stop tour schedules), ever since. Their blend of psychedelic rock, old-school blues and habitual improvised on-stage jamming makes their shows something continually unique, even with their playing nightly for months at a time.

Blues Traveler have made an annual occurrence of playing at the beautiful and iconic venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, for the last 20-odd years, and this was were I caught the travelin’ band of Princeton blues rockers a couple of years back. They played amidst fireworks (!), and their close to 2 hour set consisted of solid classics like ‘Save His Soul’ (a rarity in their current live set), and the foot-stomping ‘Love Of My Life’, for which Popper traded his harmonica for guitar. The highlight though, had to be the band’s spectacular opener, a raucous cover of Jimi Hendrix’s unforgettable version of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. This was a uniquely awesome show in a venue to match, and Blues Traveler are still doing what they do best, even two decades on.

Blues Traveler are one jam band that I actually like. I saw them at H.O.R.D.E. Fest a few times back in the day and they were always awesome. In 2013, they performed Save His Soul in its entirety to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that album, and again, they were awesome. Last year they were also very good, but I just couldn’t get into their collaborative selections with 3OH!3. Unfortunately, it seems they have gone even further down that electronic/jam/hip-hop fusion road over the past year. The show started out great, with “Things Are Looking Up” followed by “Dropping Some NYC” and “But Anyway”, but then control was handed over to Rome Ramirez. I like Rome, but I found it strange that Popper was taking a step back from his own show. “Run-Around” put the train back on its track for a minute, but then it was time for another collaboration with Hanson…as if we hadn’t had enough of them. Covering “What I Got” with Rome provided a good taste of what’s to come at Reggae on the Rocks this year, but again, wasn’t this a Blues Traveler show? - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/07/06/4th-of-july-red-rocks-07-04-15/#sthash.9PBpEXKt.dpuf

Blues Traveler, the name is a great clue to the kinds of music they make, traditional blues with a wonderfully free spirited vibe. Although the genre of Blues is very much at the core of what the band does, there is influence from the genres of psychedelica, rock, folk and soul.

A band unmatched in musical passion, having toured their discography for over twenty years they appear to get better with every single show. Classic tracks such as 'Hook' have been re-imagined and developed to include more complex instrumental and is delivered in a generally more sincere manner. The crowd watches on in almost complete silence whilst the band works onstage and only make themselves heard to cheer loudly at the closure of each track.

By the time the band performs 'But Anyway' every musician onstage is quietly prepared to perform to their extreme for the audience and use all of their musical ability that is required for this folk heavy piece of Blues. Blues Traveler are very much an act who's values and processes do not appear to have changed in their 25 year career span.

Excellent show. Brothers Keeper were the supporting band - John Popper sat in with Brothers Keeper on their last number, before he came on with Blues Traveler. After the concert, we went into the Downtown Saloon where a local blues band were playing. When they finished, John Popper and Brothers Keeper got up and gave an impromptu concert in the pub! Brilliant! We had come to Leesburg from the UK to hear Blues Traveler - When We told John that he bought us a drink! Great guy!

The band was amazing!!! The venue was cool because its small and intimate. Good sound. The only complaint was the assholes that attended. Some of the audience were disrespectful and obnoxious...which happens at concerts, but this took the cake. Maybe because its Reno?

A very nice show but too few songs of the past. It was nice they played stuff from their up-coming album, but there's nothing better then the good ole rock and roll. It was a good night except for the security personnel who were a little too pushy.

They put on a great show, lots of fun great music. The bass player is one of the best I have seen. John Popper just gets better with time. I can't wait to see them again.

The crowd was up moving and singing with them.

Street Closures

Broadway will be closed for this event between Van Dam Street and Lake Avenue - from approximately 5 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5 to 2 a.m. on Thursday, June 6 - for the installation of the stage, which will be located adjacent to the Saratoga Springs City Center. Detours will be available to motorists.

Complimentary shuttle transportation provided by CDTA from 3 to 11 p.m. from two remote parking locations, which they visit approximately every 20 minutes .

One bus will run between Route 50 Lot at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the bus stop on Broadway at Congress Park

Another between the Wilton Mall bus stop and the corner of High Rock Avenue and Lake Avenue.

Concert Schedule

Kicking off the show at 6 p.m. is Tops of Trees, a Saratoga-based original eight-piece rock and soul ensemble quickly making a name for themselves in the Capital Region. With a sound built upon a strong foundation of drum and bass, classic organ, blistering vocals, and an unshakeable horn section, the band continues to thrill audiences with high energy performances and a modern interpretation of soulful music steeped in early R&B, funk and blues. After releasing their inaugural EP "The Tree House Sessions" in 2023, Tops of Trees gained lots of local fans with their pre-fireworks performance Saratoga New Year's Fest and recently earned a 2024 Capital Region Thomas Edison Award (Eddie) nomination for Jam Band of The Year.

The Pat McGee Band, hailing from Virginia, will take the stage at 7 p.m . With an emphasis on melodies that are both memorable and evocative, an upbeat party vibe that weighs heavily on the familiarity factor, three-part harmonies, ringing guitars, steadfast rhythms and sparkling keyboards, this band’s sound is certain to satisfy the Belmont on Broadway audience. McGee has performed at the Spa City’s famed music venue Caffe Lena and has previously warmed up crowds as an opening act for Blues Traveler as well. The group’s most recent reunion album, Sugar Packet, was released in 2020.

What Can You Bring?

In an effort to increase the safety of all, organizers ask that people attending this free concert from 6 to 10 p.m. not bring coolers, backpacks, large bags, strollers, pets, glass bottles, alcohol or weapons of any kind. There is ample space to watch the concert from locations on the street - Broadway - and attendees should use the sidewalks solely for walking. Individuals who require a seat are asked to bring a folding chair that is not inside of a bag. For the enjoyment of all, organizers also ask that those inside the event space refrain from smoking. Leaving a bar or restaurant with alcohol is not permitted.

Belmont on Broadway: Blues Traveler Brings Huge Crowds to Saratoga Springs

blues traveler on tour

The first ever Belmont Festival in Saratoga Springs kicked off in grand fashion on Wednesday night, June 5th.  Ahead of the historic weekend, concert goers turned out by the thousands for the official opening, a block party dubbed ‘Belmont on Broadway’ headlined by the Grammy Award winning rock band Blues Traveler.

Often referred to as “the Summer place to be,” the enthusiastic atmosphere could be felt all over the city. Propelled by the distinct voice of the legendary John Popper and his scorching array of harmonicas and harmonies, the good-time vibes were off the charts, contagious and perhaps a little rowdy.

belmont saratoga

With the six-day festival expected to bring the Spa City more than $50 million in revenue, the massive crowds also meant massive business for the local shops and restaurants downtown.  People of all ages lined every inch and stoop of Broadway, arriving early to catch the opening set from eight-piece local rock and soul ensemble Tops of Trees. With a steady influx of concertgoers packing in like sardines by the time the charismatic Pat McGee Band took the stage, it was Grade A entertainment all around as friends, families, and strangers stood shoulder-to-shoulder, sweaty and smiling on this humid summer night in early June.

belmont saratoga

With stellar production services provided by the fine folks at High Peaks Production, the overall program ran incredibly smooth and both looked and sounded great from the start. After a brief word from organizers, the winners of the Belmont on Broadway window decoration contest were announced as Heidi Owen West and Stacey D’Andrea-Goodman of the Lifestyles of Saratoga boutique. Clearing the stage shortly after 8pm, it was finally time for the band everybody came out to see.

belmont saratoga

Once ruling the radio with chart toppers from their massive, multi-platinum selling album Hook , the beloved improv-heavy rockers from Princeton, New Jersey, Blues Traveler proved they still know how to party like it’s 1994.  No stranger to headlining festivals, the band is credited as the driving force behind the original H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) festival that successfully toured the country from 1992 to 1998, including memorable stops at SPAC just up the road. Once again playing up to a massive crowd all these years later, Blues Traveler hit them with hits early and often.

belmont saratoga

Consisting of harmonica wizard and band leader John Popper, along with guitarist Chan Kinchla, bassist Tad Kinchla, keyboard player Ben Wilson and drummer Brandon Hill, Blues Traveler opened with perhaps their most popular song, “Run-Around” resulting in city-wide sing-along that’s still reverberating somewhere down Caroline Street.  Demonstrating their propensity to jam, Popper would catch fire early, utilizing his signature array of custom harmonicas to blow the audience away on a “Dropping Some NYC” > “Moby Dick” > “NY Prophesie” sandwich.

Dressed in a familiar floppy-brimmed hat and looking as healthy as he has in years, the band would find it’s lengthiest groove on the psychedelic Kingpin rocker “But Anyway,” while fans then took the opportunity to spark up during a cover of Tom Petty’s “Mary Janes’s Last Dance.” The heartfelt “Mountains Win Again” was perhaps the most emotional song of the evening, followed up by perhaps the funkiest in a cover of the Son Seals classic, “Funky Bitch,” which many fans often confuse as a Phish original.

belmont saratoga

Segueing nicely into an equally funky “War Pigs” keyboard jam before alligator-ing at breakneck speed into a ferocious, foot stomping rendition of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” (which the band humorously changed to “The Devil Went Down to Saratoga”), the melodic interplay between Popper and Chad Kinchla’s colorful guitar solos would shine bright all night long, but especially on 1997’s “Carolina Blues.”

blues traveler on tour

Gracefully dipping off stage while each member of the band was given the chance to solo in the spotlights, Popper would lead Blues Traveler through the remainder of the set that combined an easy melodic flow crossed with a plethora of choice cover songs and sophisticated soul-funk boogie. With highlights that also included teases of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” and Aerosmith’s “Eat the Rich,” Blues Traveler would bring the main portion of the set to a close with a massive sing along to their smash hit “Hook.”

With the curfew rapidly approaching and the enthusiastic Spa City crowd still eating it up and begging for more, the band would insight the famous “Toga” chant from the Animal House film, before encoring with one final cover, ZZ Top’s “La Grange.” A great evening of music powered by a band that’s stood the test of time, the atmosphere in downtown Saratoga Springs was downright electric and made you hope ‘the powers that be’ will take notice and introduce more events like this one in the future. For now, you can re-live this entire performance via tapper audio at the link below courtesy of Archive.org.

belmont saratoga

Up next for the band, Blue Traveler will take the rest month off before returning to the legendary Red Rocks in Morrison, CO for their annual 4th of July throwdown. Later this August, you can catch them back in New York with a pair of dates at Lewiston Artpark and the Perinton Center Park Amphitheater in Fairport.

Preps for Blues Traveler concert amid Belmont on Broadway

S ARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — During Belmont on Broadway, Wednesday, you’ll notice barricades on Broadway. It’s part of many road closures in preparation for a Blues Traveler Concert.

Donning her bonnet, hat designer Lisa Battaglia will be in attendance.

“I’m kind of old. I love…I remember them when they used to be kind of popular” said Battaglia.

“I just think it’s [the concert] a great summer experience. It’s really exciting that the Belmont’s here. I mean this is a once in a lifetime, well I guess it’s a twice in a lifetime, because it’s coming back next year. But this is really exciting to be a resident and be part of that,” said Katie Vianese. The Saratoga resident told NEWS10’s Zion Decoteau that she rushed to purchase tickets to the Belmont Stakes race as soon as they came out.

If You’re headed this way officials want you to take CDTA.

“We’ll be providing trolley service from two Park and Ride locations in the spa city so people can jump on the trolley,  to get to the concert and really  leave the driving to us,” said CDTA communications director Jaime Kazlo.

The concert and the traffic are all part of the hype surrounding the Belmont Stakes. No one knows that better than Tom Durkin who called races for nearly a quarter century.

“The fact that…a Triple Crown race will be held here at Saratoga which is the Mecca of course racing, really adds a lot to the… event,” said Durkin.

Live performances begin at 6:00 PM on Wednesday beginning with Tops of Trees and the Pat McGee band. Blues Traveler hits the stage from 8:30 until 10:00 pm.
