B.C. highways: Road closures, travel advisories in place as province faces latest storm
As B.C. endures its third atmospheric river in under a week, travel advisories are in place and roads remain closed in parts of the province.
More than two dozen weather warnings are in place across B.C., with some parts of the province expected to see as much as 150 millimetres of rain. On Wednesday, Deputy Premier Mike Farnworth warned residents they should still avoid non-essential travel if they can.
"We need to avoid unnecessary travel and wait out this storm," he said.
In anticipation of worsening conditions, Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet was closed Tuesday afternoon. The highway reopened at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, but to essential travel only. Vehicle eight restrictions are also in place.
On Wednesday morning, a section of Highway 7 closed in both directions due to a landslide near Maria Slough Bridge east of Agassiz. Shortly after 7:30 a.m., the road reopened to single-lane alternating traffic and drivers were told to expect delays. Later in the morning the highway fully reopened.
As well, Highway 1 remains closed between Abbotsford and Chilliwack and between Popkum and Hope.
Even though Highway 3 remains open, it's only for essential travel and when other roads reopen they may be subject to travel orders as well.
"These highways are not in a normal state," Fleming said. "Please, slow down, be patient, accept that it will take longer to get to where you need to go."
In addition to the closures, a travel advisory is in place for Highway 20 between Bella Coola and Williams Lake in response to heavy rainfall in the forecast for the central coast. Those who decide to travel during these intense storms have been advised to be prepared with food, water, warm clothes, a blanket and an emergency kit.
As of Wednesday afternoon, these were the highway conditions in southern B.C., specifically related to recent floods and landslides. Not all road closures are reflected in this list and DriveBC's traffic page may have the most up-to-date information.
- Closed between Exit 90 and Exit 109 (Abbotsford to Chilliwack) due to flooding.
- Closed between Exit 138 and Exit 165 (Hope to east of Chilliwack) due to heavy rainfall and risk of debris flow.
- Open with travel advisory between Exit 170 and Kahmoose Road (south of Jackass Mountain Summit to Hope).
- Closed between Junction Highway 12 and Junction Highway 8 (Lytton to Spences Bridge) due to rock slide.
- Closed between Kahmoose Road and Main Street (Lytton to south of Jackass Mountain Summit) due to flooding and mudslide.
- Closed between Hazelwood Avenue and Townshipline Road (Abbotsford) due to flooding.
- Open for essential travel only between Hope and Princeton. Checkpoint in place.
- Closed between Hope and Merritt due to washouts.
- Open for essential travel only between Glasgow Avenue and Ross Road (Mission to Hope). Checkpoint in place.
- Closed between Highway 8 and Petit Creek Road (west of Merritt to Spences Bridge) due to washout.
- Open for essential travel only between Lil'wat Place and Seton Lake Road (north of Pemberton to Lillooet). Checkpoint in place.

Here's a rundown of highway closures and conditions in B.C.
Washouts and closures have made travel in b.c. a challenge, but this list will help you plan ahead.

Highways connecting the Lower Mainland to the rest of B.C. have faced flooding, landslides and in some cases, complete washouts since a historic storm hit the province Nov. 13.
Many people who were left stranded when travel between the Lower Mainland and the rest of the province was cut off chose to head south into Washington state and back into Canada to get home.
At least 200 sites on highways in the Lower Mainland and Interior were affected, according to the province. However, the state of highways in B.C. remains ever changing amid further heavy rainfall and as routes are reopened following cleanup.
Here's a look at the state of B.C.'s highways as of 1 p.m. PT on Dec. 20.
Lower Mainland
Highway 1 : The stretch of the Trans Canada Highway connecting the Fraser Valley to Hope is open in two lanes in each direction as of Dec. 7.
Although that area is not limited to essential travel, the province is asking people to avoid unnecessary travel on Highway 1 to help keep the road safe for commercial vehicles transporting goods.
- B.C. highways reopen, food systems starting to stabilize, provincial officials say
Highway 7 : Highway 7 between Mission and Hope was opened to general traffic on Dec. 6 after initially being restricted to essential vehicles only.
On Nov. 15, motorists were stranded as a result of several mudslides on this stretch of highway. According to the Ministry of Transportation, abandoned vehicles on Highway 7 were towed and moved to secure storage.
The Ministry of Transportation says motorists will now be able to use the stretch to commute to work and drive children to school. The stretch is likely to see increased traffic, and drivers should be prepared for delays, according to the province.
Highway 11 : The section between Hazelwood Avenue and Clayburn Road reopened Dec. 6 to passenger and emergency vehicles only, restoring the highway connection between Abbotsford and Mission.
On Dec. 10, that same section reopened to commercial vehicle traffic as well. All traffic is now moving on the two southbound lanes of Highway 11 using a single lane in each direction. The northbound lanes remain closed until the highway can be fully repaired from flood damage.
Although it is not subject to an essential travel order, people are asked to limit unnecessary travel on this stretch of Highway 11. All drivers should expect a slower commute and delays.
Routes connecting Lower Mainland to Interior
Highway 1 : The Trans Canada Highway between Lytton and Spences Bridge is closed due to a rock slide. There is no estimated reopening time, but DriveBC will provide an update on Dec. 8.
Highway 1 is also closed between Lytton and Jackass Mountain Summit with the exception of local and essential travel only, due to flooding and a mudslide. The situation at this section of the Trans Canada will also be updated Dec. 8.
- Volunteers in Abbotsford help with cleanup as receding floodwaters leave behind trail of garbage, debris
Highway 3: There is currently a travel advisory in place between Hope and Princeton, restricting this stretch of Highway 3 to essential traffic only.
Checkpoints and travel restrictions are being enforced, and there is no stopping allowed in Princeton for vehicles over 14 tons. The province says to "expect congestion" on the route, as well as a police presence because, according to Transportation Minister Rob Fleming, there have been "too many accidents" on the highway.
The province plans on reopening Highway 3 to all traffic at 8 a.m. PT Tuesday, Dec. 21.
Highway 5 : The Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt opened on Monday, Dec. 20 to commercial vehicles with a minimum licensed gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 11,794 kilograms.and inter-city buses only.
The arterial route that connects Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley to the province's Interior was damaged in more than 20 places after mudslides in mid-November knocked out multiple bridges.
Permanent repairs to the stretch will take longer, Fleming said, and will occur as essential traffic flows through the corridor. There is no date set for when the highway will open to all traffic.
Highway 12: The highway between Fountain Creek Road and Lillooet has been reopened on Dec. 3 after being closed due to a rock slide.
Highway 99 : The highway between Lillooet and Pemberton reopened on Dec. 4 after a three-day-long closure due to a mudslide. A travel advisory is still in effect, with only essential traffic allowed. Vehicles with a licensed weight of more than 14,500 kilograms are not allowed.
Highway 8 : The highway connecting Merritt to Spences Bridge is closed, and has been essentially destroyed by washouts.
Fleming says 18 segments of the highway were damaged, including four bridges.
A temporary bridge has been set up near Canford to provide local residents alternative access to the area.

Should Highway 1 or Highway 5 close in the future, Highway 8 will not be used as a detour as it is an active construction zone. Protocol to redirect traffic away from Highway 8 will prevent secondary closures and impacts on local residents.
Messaging on available detour routes will be made available via message signs, DriveBC.ca and social media.

With another fire season having all ready started ( April) in parts of BC I thought I would just make one list with all the websites on it, which will help when traveling during all 4 seasons in BC.
These sites are to “try” help you plan your trips, nothing more nothing less, and I do not recommend one site over another, so use at your own risk.
There maybe other sites that people use when traveling in and around BC, however the sites I’m listing are the sites I use.
Also these websites are all working at the date I posted this, so please always ensure your using the latest version on any website.
Note: lots of ski hill cams will not be working in their off season.
If you notice a website that I missed feel free to add it.

News Release
Denali park road opening to teklanika on april 24, 2024.
Denali National Park and Preserve will open the Park Road to private vehicle traffic as far as Mile 30, the Teklanika Rest Area, on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. The recent warmer weather and low snow levels in the park helped the spring road crew in their efforts to open the Denali Park Road. However, visitors may still encounter snow, ice, and mud on some portions of the road, particularly in shaded sections.
The road will remain open, weather permitting, through May 19, 2024. The following day, May 20, transit buses will start running for the season and the road will close to private vehicles at Mile 15, the Savage River. The Teklanika Rest Area is still wet but accessible. The restrooms at Teklanika, the Savage River, and Mountain Vista will be available for public use. All campgrounds west of park headquarters will remain closed until May 20. There will be heavy equipment traffic on the road from the park entrance to East Fork as a part of the Pretty Rocks bridge project, and road users are advised to be aware of their presence and use caution when on the roadway.
The Park Road is closed to all entry from the East Fork Bridge to the Polychrome Overlook location. There is no bicycle/pedestrian access through the Pretty Rocks Landslide and the road is not plowed on the other side. Anyone wishing to access parts of the road beyond the closure, which is accessible only by hiking around Polychrome Mountain, should expect challenging conditions and be prepared to be completely self-sufficient as emergency response capabilities will be very limited and no facilities beyond the slide are open. Please monitor the park website for up-to-date closure information.
Additionally, a bear capture operation is planned next month from May 6-9, and will necessitate a closure for all bikers and pedestrians along the park road west of the Teklanika River bridge, as well as all backcountry units west of the Teklanika River. The closure will start May 6 and remain in effect until three days post capture of the last bear, so possibly through May 12. The capture operation allows the park’s wildlife biologists to check collars on young and growing bears and to replace any collars that might have dropped off or malfunctioned. Check the park website at www.nps.gov/dena for possible earlier opening of the area.
Keep in mind that bears are becoming active after the long winter. Carry bear spray and know how to use it. Never feed any wildlife. Keep all food secure where animals can’t get it. Stay at least 300 yards away from bears and 25 yards from all other wildlife. Check out the Denali National Park website for hiking and biking safety information .
Weather conditions can change rapidly at this time of the year, and the road may open and close several times. Visitors are encouraged to contact the park for updated road and weather information .

Former Houston Astros prospect Ronny Garcia dead at 24
Ronny Garcia, a former Houston Astros prospect, died in a traffic accident.
The Astros confirmed his death Saturday on social media.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Astros prospect, Ronny Garcia," the team said on X alongside a photo of Garcia. "Our condolences go out to his family and friends."
Garcia died in a traffic accident, according to Héctor Gómez , a Dominican Republic-based reporter who covers Major League Baseball.
According to Gómez, Garcia's father also died in the crash.
Yahoo Sports reported the accident involved two motorcycles on the Las Galeras-Samaná highway in Samaná, Dominican Republic.
Garcia joined the Astros' organization in 2016 as a 16-year-old international signing, Yahoo Sports reported. He pitched in their system in the Florida Complex League and Class A.
He played for a number of minor league teams, including the Fayetteville Woodpeckers and the Asheville Tourists in North Carolina, for whom he played as recently as last year.
"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Ronny Garcia. Ronny spent parts of three seasons with Fayetteville, always carrying a smile around the ballpark," the Woodpeckers wrote on X .
"He was a talented pitcher and a beloved teammate. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time."
