Noise Rating
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine by HDM, a division of Breas Medical, is a positive airway pressure (PAP) machine with both continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) functions.
First released in 2019, the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is an updated form of the Z1 Auto Travel CPAP Machine. In addition to being quieter than the Z1, the Z2 also starts and stops automatically.
We’ll walk you through the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP’s features, performance, and cost so you can decide whether it’s right for your needs.

What you need to know about the z2 auto travel cpap machine.
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP offers both CPAP and APAP settings . The CPAP setting provides a fixed level of air pressure, which is determined in a CPAP titration study , while the APAP setting uses an algorithm to automatically adjust the air pressure to accommodate a sleeper’s changing breathing patterns. A sleep specialist can determine which mode is best for you and program the machine accordingly.
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is highly streamlined, even compared to other travel CPAP machines. Traditional humidifiers can be bulky, but the Z2 uses a disposable heat and moisture exchanger (HME) that uses moisture in the sleeper’s breath to provide humidification without a water tank.
Other Z2 features include ramp mode, a reusable Qlite muffler to quiet the sound, automatic start and stop, a Nitelog app to track sleep data, and a proprietary Z-Breathe algorithm that provides a more comfortable air pressure level.
What Comes With It
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP comes with the components required to use the machine, such as a power cable, tubing, tube adapter, USB cable for data transfer, and filter. The user must purchase their mask separately, as is common with CPAP machines.
The Z2 also has two unique components, an HME and a Qlite muffler. The HME recycles moisture from the sleeper’s breath to humidify the pressurized air, while the Qlite uses foam to dampen noises produced by the device.
PAP Type: CPAP and APAP
Components:
- Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine
- AC adapter and power cord
- 4-foot slim-style CPAP tube
- 8-inch CPAP tube
- Tube adapter
- Heat and moisture exchanger (HME)
- Qlite muffle
Features You Might Like
The Z2 offers features that are common among travel CPAP machines, like a small size and battery compatibility, as well as less common features such as the disposable HME and the proprietary Qlite muffler. The Z2 is also approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for in-flight use.
Special Features:
- Heat and moisture exchanger (HME): To combat sinus and airway irritation that can result from dry air, the Z2 uses a small cartridge to provide humidity rather than a bulky water tank. Called an HME, this cartridge recycles moisture from the sleeper’s breath. The HME is disposable and should be replaced every seven days of use.
- Qlite muffler: This small, reusable piece fits between the CPAP device and hose and is designed to dampen noises produced by the machine. This piece does not require cleaning.
- Z-Breathe algorithm: The Z-Breathe feature offers three settings of pressure relief, or reduced air pressure, as a sleeper first exhales. This setting makes breathing with the CPAP machine easier for some people and must be set by a health care professional.
- Automatic start/stop : The Z2 starts and stops automatically when the user puts on and takes off their mask.
- Ramp mode: Ramp mode can make it easier to fall asleep while using a CPAP machine by initially releasing air at a low air pressure level and gradually increasing it to the desired level. Users can set and save their preferred ramp time in five-minute increments.
- Nitelog Bluetooth app: Users can download an optional app onto Apple or Android devices. This app connects to the CPAP machine via Bluetooth and allows sleepers to view their sleep data and control the machine from the app.
- Desktop software: Those who prefer not to use a phone app can still access their sleep data by downloading software from the Breas Medical site to a Windows computer.
- Optional battery power source: For people who want to use the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP without plugging the device into a wall outlet, a PowerShell accessory is available for an additional cost. This accessory provides enough power to run the device for a full night of sleep.
CPAP Machine Size and Cost
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is exceptionally streamlined and fits easily into a carry-on bag or purse. At 6.5 by 3.3 inches and only 2 inches tall, the Z2 weighs less than a pound and is one of the smallest travel CPAP machines on the market. The use of an HME also provides humidification without a bulky tank, so sleepers don't have to choose between small size and comfort.
APAP and travel CPAP machines tend to cost more than standard CPAP machines. The Z2 has an average price-point for a travel CPAP machine and is priced lower than most small APAP machines.
However, users should factor in the cost of replacing the disposable HME cartridge when considering upkeep costs. Each cartridge lasts for seven nights of use before needing to be replaced.
Dimensions: 6.5″ x 3.3″ x 2″
Weight: 0.65 lbs.
Price: $799
How This CPAP Machine Performs
How portable is this cpap machine.
Each CPAP machine has its pros and cons, so considering specific factors may make it easier to decide whether a machine is right for your needs. Not all categories may be important to you, so consider your own needs and preferences before making a decision.
Is This CPAP Machine Easy to Use?
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP features a backlit LCD screen and a settings menu that users can navigate using three large buttons. Most people are likely to find the Z2 easy to use, though some users may need to use glasses to read the display information.
How Compatible Is This Machine With Other PAP Products?
Like most other CPAP machines, the Z2 is compatible with all standard size and slim-style tubing as well as CPAP masks that work with standard tubing. The Qlite muffler is also compatible with all standard tubing.
Sleepers must purchase replacement heat and moisture exchanger cartridges from Breas Medical. Breas does not recommend purchasing a separate humidifier tank to use with the Z2 Auto instead of the HME cartridges, since using a humidifier may affect the Qlite muffler.
Sleepers who want to use battery power for their Z2 must use the PowerShell battery.
What Do the Pressure Settings Look Like?
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP displays the air pressure settings on the LCD screen. Air pressure is measured in centimeters of water pressure (cm H2O), with a pressure range of 4 to 20 cm H2O. This range is standard for most CPAP machines and is likely to fulfill the needs of most users.
Is This CPAP Machine Noisy?
At 26 decibels, the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP runs more quietly than most of its competitors. This level is considered quieter than a whisper and is unlikely to bother light sleepers. However, the Z2 is slightly louder when not used with the Qlite muffler.
Are There Air Temperature and Humidity Controls?
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP uses an HME for humidification, which is a self-contained cartridge that cannot be adjusted. Its design lessens the chance of humidification-related problems, such as excess moisture in the tubing, but some users may prefer a traditional tank-based humidifier that allows for additional temperature and humidity adjustments.
What Do Maintenance and Care Look Like?
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP requires standard maintenance and cleaning for a CPAP machine, though its accessories also require upkeep. Daily care involves washing the tubing with warm, soapy water. Users can wipe off the machine with a damp cloth, if needed. The Qlite piece does not require cleaning, though it should be checked for cracks and replaced when needed.
Weekly replacement of the HME is also required for sleepers that choose to use that optional function. Unlike traditional CPAP machines with humidifiers, adding water to a tank is not necessary.
Thanks to its streamlined weight and size, the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is exceptionally portable, even for a travel CPAP device. While the machine is FAA-approved for in-flight use, users must turn off the machine’s Bluetooth before takeoff.

What do customers have to say about the z2 auto travel cpap.
The majority of users report being very satisfied with their Z2 Auto Travel CPAP, though many note that it should be used for travel, not for daily use. The machine’s compact size and easy-to-use design receive the most praise, followed by the Qlite muffler’s ability to keep noise to a minimum.
Users report mixed reviews for the HME. Most state that it works appropriately in most conditions, though extremely dry or humid conditions may cause it to be less effective. However, other users say that they require more humidification than the HME can provide.

Product Review: Z2 Auto CPAP Machine With Scores and Rankings
- Last Updated: Friday, May 27th, 2022

Table of Contents
Human Design Medical’s Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine is proving to be quite popular among CPAP users.
The secret? When compared to its predecessor, the Z1 Auto, the Z2 Auto is 29% quieter and has a different pitch to the motor for optimal comfort. An added bonus? It’s an attractive option for busy travelers due to its lightweight and small stature.
How does it stack up against the competition? Let’s find out!
The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine vs Similar Travel Machines
Add to cart, noise level: 7.
The Z2 Auto checks in at 26 decibels and is 29% quieter than the Z1 Auto. However, the pitch of the motor is the showstopper compared to the Z1 Auto. The Z2 Auto is whisper-quiet and sounds similar to quiet background noise while you sleep. This change integrates your therapy into your nighttime routine instead of acting as a disruption. The included Q-Tube Muffler dampens the sound further to create a sleeping environment with fewer interruptions.
The Z2 Auto is a little more expensive than the Z1 but is still value-priced compared to similar machines in the travel category. It also comes with a lot of nice freebies like a free Q-Tube CPAP Muffler to dampen the sound and a Heat Moisture Exchange Unit (waterless humidification) to keep your nose and throat from drying out.
Warranty: 8
The two-year warranty is standard when compared to most CPAP machines . It covers manufacturer defects and mistakes but not misuse or abuse. The Z1 Auto has a warranty of three years, which places it as an industry leader. Ultimately, we awarded the Z2 Auto the same score as similar travel machines that also have a two-year warranty.
The Z2 Auto is so light that you can measure the weight of the machine in ounces and not pounds! It weighs in at 10.4 ounces, which is a nice weight for a travel machine. It weighs roughly the same as the Z1 Auto and others in the travel category. The lightweight of the Z2 Auto allows you to put it in your suitcase or backpack and venture out to your next travel destination.
If you’re in the market for a travel-friendly CPAP machine, then look no further. The Z2 Auto can be comfortably carried in one hand due to its lightweight and small size. Its tiny size will allow you to fit the machine in almost any bag so that your therapy can travel with you on-the-go. Life’s an adventure—bring your CPAP therapy along with you!
Pressure Relief: 9
The Z2 Auto tracks your breathing on a breath-by-breath basis and automatically adjusts to your correct therapy pressure. The Z2 Auto adapts to your therapy needs, meaning your treatment will never be one-size-fits-all. The auto-adjusting pressure can also save you a trip to the doctor’s office for pressure adjustments.
Along with auto-adjusting pressure, the Z2 Auto also has Z-Breathe Pressure Relief technology, which temporarily reduces the pressure during exhalation and makes it a breeze to exhale. Another benefit? The Z-Breathe technology will help you develop a normal breathing pattern and increase comfortability. The other machines we looked at also have Pressure Relief technology and auto-adjusting pressure so we awarded them a similar score.
Therapy Tracking: 9
Are you a numbers person? Do you like to keep track of how your therapy is going?
The Z2 Auto allows you to download your therapy results right to your Windows computer for further analysis. You can also review your therapy results on your phone using the Nitelog Mobile App. When compared to other travel machines, the therapy tracking features of the Z2 Auto fit right in.
Humidification: 8
The Z2 Auto includes a Heat Moisture Exchange Unit , which is similar to ResMed’s HumidX. The Z2 Auto recycles humidity from your exhaled breath to create the sensation of moisture without needing water-based humidification. This will keep your nose and throat from drying out. The best part? You won’t have to worry about lugging around a separate humidification system or a tank of distilled water while you’re traveling. Just breathe and humidification is made available!
Smart Features: 8
The Z2 Auto has auto-start and auto-stop features that are similar to the Z1 Auto. Once you put on your mask, the Z2 Auto detects changes in your breathing and automatically starts. When you wake up, the Z2 Auto will sense your breathing pattern change and automatically stop. That’s one less thing to worry about when you’re on-the-go!
The DreamStation Go and AirMini are comparable to each other in terms of smart features, and the Z2 Auto comes very close.
Battery Options: 9
If you’re planning on going off-the-grid or are looking to pack a battery back-up just in case, we have you covered. Both the Z1 Auto and the Z2 Auto have a battery that’s been custom-tailored to fit the needs of both machines: the Z1 and Z2 PowerShell Battery . In fact, the Z2 Auto can use all of the Z1 Auto’s same accessories. This is similar to the DreamStation Go, which also has a companion battery that’s designed specifically for it.
You can connect the Z2 Auto to the Pilot-12 Lite with the Z1 and Z2 Mixed Cable Kit . The Portable Outlet CPAP Battery is also an option , which has the capability of powering any device with a power supply and a plug, making it a versatile and flexible battery.
TOTAL SCORE: 85 / 100
Overall, the Z2 Auto scored very well across the board and has made a name for itself compared to similar travel machines . Ultimately, the difference in pitch levels and humidification options are the major factors that separate the Z1 Auto from the Z2 Auto. The option of having a quieter machine with the ability to leave your humidification system at home makes the Z2 Auto hard to beat.

The review was inaccurate with respect to the smart features. The Nitelog app does not function with the Z2. The reviews from users of the Z1 are terrible. The app itself looks like a first generation iPhone app and has not been updated in 3-4 years despite constant complaints from users. Very odd.
Hi Craig, thank you for your feedback. I have contacted Human Medical Design, the manufacturer of the Z1 and was advised that the Nitelog App does in fact work with the Z2. I was also advised that they are in the process of re-designing the Nitelog App. If you are experiencing issues with utilizing the app, please reach Human Medical Design at: 855-436-8729 for technical assistance.
We value all customer feedback, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221 with any further questions, or concerns.
Enjoy your day!
Hi Craig, This may be obvious to everyone but me, but how do I interpret the scores? Is 1 the highest or is 10 the highest score? Is it possible to upgrade my noisy Z1 to a Z2 without paying full price? I can’t even use the Z1 because the noise keeps me awake.
Hi Mike, that’s a great question! For this article, 10 is the highest. The higher the score the better the ranking is.
Did you purchase your Z1 from CPAP.com within the last 15 days? If so, it is under a guarantee/trial period and you may return it for the Z2 and only pay the difference in cost.
If you purchased your Z1 from a different company, you should verify what their return policy is.
Please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: [email protected] with further questions, or concerns.
Have a wonderful day!
I have a z1 and an air mini. I would rate the house if the z1 at 3 and the air mini at 9 since you can barely hear the air mini.
I have a Z2 Auto. It’s a very good travel machine, and it is somewhat quieter than the Z1, which I also had prior to the Z2.
There is still some noise, but it’s much improved. Noise is also impacted by your choice of mask and tube. I found that full size 19mm tubing is quieter.
Regarding the App – it works exactly the same on the Z2 as the Z1. It definitely needs tweaking. The biggest challenge is getting the app to connect to bluetooth. When you get the connection screen, it seems to see every device in the neighborhood, and the screen scrolls quickly which makes it hard to connect. Once you get the hang of it you can get connected. If you want more data, they have a Win 10 compatible program that has much better data than the mobile app. Having said that, the Nightlog app, and their Windows app have much more info than Resmed My Air. All in all I like the unit.
I am using HDM Auto Z1 since May 19 for my sleep apnea with AHI of 36 . But I am not at all satisfied with this machine as in spite of changing the machine two times by your dealer the AHI is not coming down below 12 . Ideally this should by now would have been below 1. Don’t know what to do and the dealer of the machine in India is equally confused. This small machine is unable to produce pressure more than 8 to 10 in average. May be this type of small machine is good for few days in tour to keep AHI in moderate condition and not suitable for regular use. Breas should declare this before it is sold. But what about replacement of my machine is not known, a mere waste of $1000 !
Hey Debjyoti, I’m sorry about the difficulty your experiencing with your CPAP therapy. Have you spoken with your doctor regarding your pressure setting? Your doctor should be able to review your sleep therapy data, and make a medical decision to adjust your pressure/machine settings and determine what may be causing your AHI to remain at 12, or higher.
The Z1 Auto machine, can be used on a regular basis, as the machine operates at pressures just as a regular home-sized machine does.
Please feel free to contact us if you are in need of any troubleshooting, or if you have questions/concerns, at 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: [email protected] .
Best Wishes!

Hola Andrés, lamento los problemas que tienes con tu máquina Z2 CPAP. ¿Has intentado desinstalar y reinstalar la aplicación Nitelog?

Great for traveling!
Some difficulty getting the proper settings installed. Finally found a video that gave good instructions.
Lack of humidification caused some nasal/mouth dryness, but I'm willing to live with that for easier portability.
