Readers’ Rides: Tom’s 1989 Trek Antelope 850 ATB

June 10, 2022

For this week’s Readers’ Rides, the vintage MTBs keep rolling in with Tom’s 1989 Trek Antelope 850 that he’s built up as an all-rounder. Let’s check it out below!

Submitting for consideration my 1989 Trek Antelope 850 that I built to be a true ATB. My dad bought the bike brand new in Chicago in 1990, seven years before I was born. When I arrived, it was on this bike that was carted around on, behind, and eventually alongside. I like to think my earliest love of biking was fostered in this bike’s presence.

Fast forward to now, and I’m a professional mechanic that was fortunate enough to work in a shop that refurbishes these retro bikes on the daily. When my dad asked if I wanted to take the bike, I realized what an opportunity I’d been given. After building so many retro/modern bikes at work, and realizing just how capable they are, this 850 was now an opportunity to build one for myself. I sold my modern steel gravel bike and got to work.

Since completing it a few months ago, it’s carried me on mud season rides in Vermont and through the gnarly Smoke n Fire 400 in Idaho.

The definite highlight is the Crust 1” threaded disc fork. The raw finish with the visible brass fillet is just incredible. A rare Deore LX headset holds it in, and I’ve got the Velo Orange 1” threaded stem (one of the best components on the market right now, imo) with Salsa Cowchippers to round out the cockpit.

Drivetrain is 2×11 with the original cranks and BB (repacked, of course), 44/26 chainrings, and an 11-36 cassette. Apex 1 shifter talking to a GX 10 speed derailleur for the rear, and a Dura-Ace friction bar end throwing an XTR front derailleur.

For brakes, I’ve got a TRP Spyre up front and a travel agent’d XTR parallel push V brake in the rear. I’ve been super impressed with this combo, tons of power even rocketing down rough double track.

Wheelset is a pair of Velocity Cliffhangers laced to Shimano hubs with a dynamo in the front. Rene Herse Humptulips Ridge endurance casing tires (26×2.3”).

For accessories, I’ve got the Tumbleweed Mini Pannier rack, Sinewave Beacon, and B&M Mu. Custom frame bag by Aaron at Class 4 Designs, based out of Vermont.

I know that was a monstrous amount of info, but I’m not really sure how this process works so I wanted to be thorough. I can take some better/more detailed pics, but attached are a few from the most recent Smoke n Fire tour (and a film one from earlier in the year)

Is The Trek 850 A Good Mountain Bike? [Trek 850 Review]

Table of Contents

Back in the 1990s, Trek produced a large number of classic models. It was also one of the most well-known bicycle brands. This is an in-depth examination of the Trek 850.

Is the Trek 850 mountain bike a good choice for a mountain bike? What we like about the Trek 850 and what we don’t. What do you suggest if you want to buy a good mountain bike?

Trek 850

Welcome to the Best Bike Select blog, where we aim to help more people find the perfect bike for them.

Below, we’ll go over the Trek 850 mountain bike’s mountain and road riding capabilities, key components and features, and other models in the lineup.

See our posts on the best mountain bikes under $5,000 and the best mountain bikes under $1,000 to see how it all stacks up.

Mountain Riding

The Trek 850 cost $459.99 in 1995. This was a very low-cost mountain bike. However, in comparison to modern mountain bikes, it left a lot to be desired.

However, in terms of mountain bikes, the riders were dissatisfied with the performance.

The bike has a small 26-inch wheel “Tires sized for the more popular and rigid forks prior to 2010 (a very rare type of mountain bike fork at the moment) provide little shock absorption when riding on roots or gravel, but ride very efficiently.

The 2.10 “Trek Big Kahuna tires provide excellent traction on hard dirt surfaces. It can pass through muddy dirt and water roads with ease.

On the one hand, the shock front fork has no limitations, and on the other, it can easily cross technically difficult mountain roads.

Road Riding

The Trek 850’s design, without a shock fork, is very similar to that of a road bike, and it was one of the more popular commuter options at the time.

The Trek 850 mountain track is a versatile mountain bike; it doesn’t get high marks for mountain riding, but its performance on regular commuter roads is commendable.

By attaching the rear rack and basket, it is simple to convert to a short-distance commuter.

The 3X7 drivetrain handles the road’s various hills with ease. Even the occasional weed-infested flat road is enjoyable to drive on.

Key features of the Trek 850

Steel frame (4.0/5).

TIG-welded steel frame that is relatively inexpensive to construct and is well-known for its sturdiness and durability.

The most commonly used frame material for a low-cost mountain bike.

There are no odd burrs or cracks in the flat welded section.

A variety of frame options, as well as a comfortable head tube angle that allows the rider to maintain a sit-to-stand riding position. The color of the frame varies depending on the year of manufacture.

83, black metallic with red panel and head tube 84, black with red graphics 85, black with red graphics 86, Antelope – tamarak (olive drab), also pink to white fade 87, Antelope – blue metallic with white decals, also red/black fade with silver decals 88, yellow with blue decals, also black with magenta decals 89, silver with bright blue decals, also denim blue with yellow decals 90, intense blue with white decals, also white with black decals-blue trek mountain bike 91, red with black splash with white decals on black and silver 92, Antelope – sour grape with white decals 94, floating violet/black fade with white decals, also steel blue with black decals 95, Mercury silver/steel blue fade with black decals, also ice green with blue decals 96, Saturn silver/ice indigo fade with ice indigo decals, also dry ice red with black decals 97, dry ice blue with black decals

3X7 drivetrain (4.0/5)

With up to 21 gear changes, I could tell Trek put a lot of thought into the Trek 850.

However, it is not a mid-range mountain bike.

Shimano’s gears, on the other hand, make shifting more pleasant and offer a sufficient range of gears for general mountain and commuting roads.

While Shimano 3 x 7 drivetrains are popular in the low-cost mountain bike market, they do an excellent job of getting you from your starting point to your destination.

Shimano Alivio M-System Brakes (3.5/5)

Lap brakes are currently among the braking systems on the verge of becoming obsolete.

We obviously can’t look at this “old” bike with eyes that have been open for nearly 30 years.

Shimano Alivio M-System brakes make a slight scraping sound when braking, which is the most likely sound you’ll hear from a bike you sat behind as a kid, as does the Shimano STX handlebar, which requires little force to stop smoothly.

It takes some time to break in and requires occasional brake adjustments to keep it in top condition.

26 x 2.10inch Trek Kahuna Tires (3.5/5)

Mountain bike tires are not the same as those found on other types of bikes.

The Trek 850 comes with 26 “Trek Kahuna tires, which do not appear to be particularly tall but can accommodate a wider size range when paired with various matching frames.

The large grain tire knob is ideal for mud riding because it effectively shakes off mud and water that has become stuck to the tires.

The grip performance on loose mud isn’t the best, but it has a very high power transmission, so it doesn’t become as difficult.

Because of the Trek 850’s steep head tube angle, it’s easy to climb on hard ground. 2.1 formalized “Wide tires reduce tire traction while increasing riding speed. It’s better for commuting.

What versions of Trek 850 are available?

Trek antelope 850.

The Trek antelope 850, which was first released in 1986, did not receive a significant upgrade in configuration.

The top speed remained the same as on the first Trek 850. The width of the tire was increased from 2.1″ to 2.15″. The frame’s head tube angle has increased, making steep uphill rides faster.

However, it will not be much of an advantage during descents.

Benefits of the Trek 850

  • Sturdy and durable steel frame provides years of riding without easy damage
  • 3 x 7 drivetrain allows for lots of gear changes to accommodate rolling terrain
  • 26 x 2.10inch Trek Kahuna tires for great grip
  • Affordable price, making it easier for mountain riders to get it

What we don’t like?

  • No shock front fork
  • Non-disc brakes, weak braking

Comparison table

Competition, trek 820 mountain bike vs trek 850.

Trek 820 mountain bike

The Trek 820 mountain bike is one of the most reasonably priced Trek mountain bikes available.

It has a strong steel frame, a 21-speed transmission, a 75mm shock fork, and a rear rack mounting position.

These aren’t exactly high-end features that allow you to ride whenever you want.

Has a more modern appearance than the dated Trek 850 and, overall, is a very well-rounded and quality mountain bike for the beginner looking for a great mountain bike for the money.

With a steeper head tube angle (70.5°), you can enjoy a more aggressive ride when riding in the mountains. The handlebar height is also raised by 15mm, extending the true head tube length and making riding easier for riders with high internal seams.

However, there are some compromises in terms of build and performance, such as the lack of disc brakes and the use of traditional rim brakes, both of which are upgradeable.

Narrower tires improve the bike’s agility for city streets, gravel roads, and light singletrack riding.

If you’re a mountain rider who only goes mountain biking on occasion, the Trek 820 mountain bike is worth a look.

Learn more: Is The Trek 820 Mountain Bike Really Suitable For Newbies?

Trek Marlin 6 mountain bike vs Trek 850

Trek Marlin 6

The Trek Marlin 6 is also a mountain bike that crushes the Trek 850 in every way.

Its configuration is a bit higher than the Trek 820 above. That’s why it’s almost double the price of the Trek 820.

I think the added budget is a very worthwhile option to invest in, as the Trek 820 needs some upgrades on top of the original accessories.

This isn’t worth it compared to a lazy rider. With the Trek Marlin 6, you get 100 mm of front suspension travel (80 mm travel in some sizes), a very current 1X10 Shimano drivetrain, rear rack mounting position, fender mounting position, and 29×2.20″ (XS and S: 27.5×2.4″) wider tires, Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes.

This would be a relatively luxurious mounting package for the novice.

And with the relatively steep angle of the head tube, the climbing ability is fully realized.

The handlebars that can be lifted by 5mm are not a great lift. And its true head tube angle doesn’t lend itself to upright riding, increasing the amount of time spent bent over.

All in all, we really like how friendly the Trek Marlin 6 is for newbies, and the various components are mid-to-high-end, so it’s one of those mountain bikes that are well worth the investment.

SANTA CRUZ Nomad vs Trek 850

SANTA CRUZ Nomad

Are you looking for an enduro bike?

Sticking to entry-level mountain bikes would be uneconomical.

Why not take the next step and begin as a near-graduation option?

The SANTA CRUZ Nomad is a well-known enduro bike.

It is suitable for both mountain and touring riding.

Carbon fiber frame that is strong and not welded. The 2.6″ tires and wide range 1X12 speed drivetrain allows for unrestricted mountain riding.

If you’ve never tried more difficult terrain, the SANTA CRUZ Nomad will take your breath away.

The front suspension’s exaggerated 170 mm travel holds up well to rocky impacts.

FOX suspension components with 170 mm of rear travel also help with the ride, which is strenuous mountain riding. Do you want to go further afield? If you want to ride on a race track full of hot blood, the SANTA CRUZ Nomad is a good option.

Schwinn Bonafide Mens Mountain Bike vs Trek 850

Schwinn bonafide mountain bike review

Simply commuting?

We also have the affordable Schwinn Bonafide, a great inexpensive mountain bike.

The Schwinn Bonafide features a lightweight aluminum frame, large 29-inch tires, a 24-speed Shimano drivetrain, 24-speed trigger shifters, a soft and stiff shock fork, and mechanical disc brakes.

Commuter riders looking for more speed appear to prefer the 27.5-29″ tires over the Trek 850s 26″ tires.

On gravel uphills, faster, smaller tire knobs are easier to deal with, and the mechanical disc brakes on the Schwinn Bonafide provide more than enough braking power for descending in hilly areas.

Riders who want a comfortable bike can quickly adapt to mountain biking thanks to the relaxed head tube angle.

The Schwinn Bonafide is a low-cost mountain bike for commuters.

Final Verdict (3.5/5)

The Trek 850 lacks a lot of modern gear, so it’s nominally a mountain bike, but it pales in comparison to difficult terrain.

However, as an early mountain bike, it was more in the middle of the price range for cheap mountain bikes at the time.

So, if you look at the Trek 850 critically, it’s not really quality, but it’s a good mountain bike in the eyes of riders who like the Trek 850.

Very strong frame

I have put a 62 cc four stroke on a rat trap and it works great I am hauling 110 pounds of trailer generator and batteries I have 1000 W on the front and 500 W on the trailer with the four stroke traction engine and a generator to charge 48 V batteries I have infinite range as long as I have gas same old story

Iron-clad dependability

Shamano shifter slips a bit in a couple of the 21 speeds

I bought 850 XS in 1998, for $600.00. I hadn't rode in in the last 4-5 years...pulled it out earlier to month, aired the tires, and BOOM: she was ready to go, again. 18 yr-old bike - no defects.

This bike seems to be bulletproof. The Chromalloy frame is solid.

I can't think of many. Although a little on the heavy side, it is still lighter than a discount store bike. Some people don't like the Shimano Altus gears, but I'm fine with them. I like the rapid fire shifters. They require very little maintenance. I would have had to adjust the gears a dozen times had it been a discount store bicycle.

I purchased this bike around 1993 when I was going to college full time. I love the paint job which is part of what attracted me to it. It is gray, purple and florescent orange. This was my first bike shop quality bike. I have kept a mileage journal and update it periodically to keep track of my mileage. to date I have nearly 8,000 miles on this bike. This has been a great joy in my life. I have taken good care of it and kept it clean, degreased and lubed periodically. this bike is like a Timex watch in that it keeps on ticking. This bike keeps on giving. The only thing you have to worry about is replacing components as they wear out such as the cassette. the chain once it stretches, replacing tires/tubes, pedals, and brake pads. I did put a new set of rapid fire shifters on and a new set of wheels. Other than that my bike is still stock. I have the original seat, crankset and handlebars. The bike has a 7 speed cassette and a triple crank on the front. I once hit 42 m.p.h. downhill when I first owned the bike. The Chromalloy frame absorbs road shock very well; much better than an aluminum frame. The bike is very robust. After 24 years of riding this machine, it rides nearly as good as when it was new. It has a sealed bottom bracket which I have never once had to replace. I definitely got what I paid for. I am quite sure I will get another 10 years out of this bike, maybe more.

Light, nimble, and very strong frame

I got my 850 Mtn Track back in 1994 and I love that bike. I used to ride it almost every day on the Thun rail-trail before it was a trail. I rode slamming over old ties and then up into a nearby state park loaded with rocky trails steep hills and awesome single track. This bike is indestructible! Then I got married and the bike sat around—got saddled with a kid seat and later a trailer bike. My youngest has started riding a two-wheel bike and my older boy traded with a friend to get a mtn bike. I took the trailer bike off and went riding single-track trails through the woods with my older boy. I haven’t ridden any real single track trails in years—Wow! I Love this bike! It’s light, nimble and fun. I looked into what’s new with mtn bikes and it’s all about the bike today and the suspension and $$$. I say consider going old-school rigid where the focus was more on the riding and not on the bike. Old school riding is about reading the trail, choosing the right line and focus. You didn’t just smash and squish over everything—it takes finesse to ride rigid and the riding trail becomes a game of strategy, skill and balance. How far can you go without dabbing your foot down on a technical stretch of trail? Unbolting all the kid stuff from my 850 and taking it back into the woods again brings back what a joy this bike is to ride. This bike is really quick and is a great climber. Don’t get too dazzled by all the expensive new suspension stuff—you might find that you can keep your cash and have as much or even more fun with a good quality old bike like the 850.

Bulletproof, tough as nails...easy to work on...looks great, rides great...Did I mention this bike is indestructible?? Priced right...frame and fork USA made...looks great!

Original tires sucked...

I bought this baby new back in 96, so have been riding it for almost 20 yrs and LOVE IT, my fav bike ever!. My first and only mountain bike, have kicked the crap outta it the entire time....beat my 17 yr old nephew on a steep uphill fifteen yrs ago (he had a maxed out super expensive GT) he ended walking his up...as I passed him... last yr a friend bought a high end carbon bike with all the bells and whistles, he wanted to race my old beat to balls trainwreck (his words) then and i promptly dusted his ass! LOL Fifteen yrs ago I put new tires on it, new much better brake pads, bar ends and thats it! five yrs ago the shifters stopped working, read online that old lube will harden in em and cause em to fail. The fix is to spray the insides with an entire can of wd40 and let sit overnite, next day worked just like new! Ive ridden it on wicked downhills, up the steepest hills...in rain, desert, jungle, mountains...anywhere and everywhere and its never let me down. MSRP was 440 bucks back in 96, I got it for $380...got my moneys worth out of it and then some...and will never get rid of it....like the energizer bunny, keeps going...and going....

Strong Bike Heavy Frame for ruff trails

Just any over all good old MTB. If you don't like it, just sell it to someone who will make use of a nice cheap (Price) bike.

Weak stock compunents

I purchased mine from Debo in Arlington,TX in '95. The frame, gears and forks are original. I replaced the rear wheel with a tandem wheel to hold up my 400# butt and the handlebars and shifters to ride more comfortably. I only ride on roads now, so I have street slicks instead of knobbies. It is my favorite bike.

Incredible strength this bike has. If you like rigid road biking this is the bike.

For me none!

I need another Trek 850 Antelope! If anyone has one for sale let me know please. Will consider all conditions / frames / parts.

Reader’s Rig: David’s 1985 Trek Antelope 850

2021 Silk Road Mountain Race, Chris McClean

2022 Silk Road Mountain Race Route Announced

Our Reader’s Rig of the week comes from non-motorized transportation planner David Pulsipher in Denver, Colorado, who shares his 1985 Trek Antelope 850 cargo bike conversion. Learn more about David, his unique rig, and his passion for laid-back tours with family and friends here…

Words and photos by David Pulsipher ( @bike.season )

Hi, I’m David. I live in the suburbs of Denver and work for the city as a transportation planner. I oversee all of the bicycle and pedestrian planning for the city, trying to make it a better place to walk and bike comfortably, conveniently, and safely.

1985 Trek Antelope 850

I love all things bicycling as they relate to unracing: bike commuting, biking for errands, transportation, and of course touring/bikepacking. My favorite type of bicycling has to be multi-day tours with my family and friends. Nothing compares to the freedom of carrying everything you need on your bike and then letting your legs take you where you want to go.

1985 Trek Antelope 850

I found this frame for sale when we lived in Chicago. I had been looking for the mid-80s Treks that had mid-fork mounts for running a front rack and was pleasantly surprised when I found this beauty. It was originally red/black fade, but I had it powder coated and built up with some of my favorite accessories. It’s equal parts function and “aspiring Rivendell owner” aesthetics. Many of the add-ons maximize water carrying when we do multi-day bike tours with my wife and three sons. They carry a lot of their own gear, but I like to carry as much as possible (tent, water, firewood), so it maximizes their enjoyment.

Unfortunately, Xtracycle has discontinued the Leap and its predecessor, the Free Radical. I love the idea of affordable cargo bikes as catalysts for adventure and carlite/carfree living. Going on bike camping/tours as a family is one the best things we do, and I’m trying to encourage more people to pick it up. I talk a lot about these types of things on my Instagram account, which you can find linked below.

You can keep up with David on Instagram @bike.season .

I'd keep the Araya wheel even if it isn't stock for this bike. It's a quality part that'll last. I wish that I could have a replacement fall into my lap for $20! I've put mine through daily use in all weather for 4 years, and now, they're nearly worn down. I've been looking at some Velocity Atlas rims for a replacement, but if I could get a set (or even one!) Araya for not much money, I'd jump one it.

trek antelope 850 mountain bike

I have had good experience with Arayas so I am happy to keep it and I am trying to keep costs down on this bike while I see how I like it.

Funny enough, this week, after Christmas, I did have a new pair of wheels fall into my lap; but they're no-name rims and hubs, probably cast-offs from a bike-shaped object from the nearby dept store. They're 559 mm, but wider than I'd like, and set up for disc brakes, so the hubs are narrower than I'd like. I don't know if I can trust them on my daily driver. Oh well, be careful what you wish for, I suppose! I'll probably pass them on and continue my quest for the Atlas rims. I just couldn't bear to see those wheels cast into the woods. They deserve a trip to the recycling plant at the very least if no one wants them.

I am fortunate to have a bike Co-op near me and I try to direct all my spare parts that I can't use their way.

I'm gonna go with 1994.

trek antelope 850 mountain bike

Trek made the 850 model from 1994-1997. I believe yours is a 1994 model. The black and crimson fade paint is a rare one indeed. When did you convert it to SS?

Zachariah said: Trek made the 850 model from 1994-1997. Click to expand...

Owning more Treks than I ever did...you may be right. I am simply going by what BikePedia listed. I am NO Trek bike historian!

looks very much like the one in the 94 catalog (page 16) http://www.mtb-kataloge.de/Bikekataloge/PDF/Trek/1994.pdf http://www.vintage-trek.com/model_numbers1.htm 850 83, black metallic with red panel and head tube 84, black with red graphics 85, black with red graphics 86 Antelope - tamarak (olive drab), also pink to white fade 87 Antelope - blue metallic with white decals, also red/black fade with silver decals 88, yellow with blue decals, also black with magenta decals 89, silver with bright blue decals, also denim blue with yellow decals 90, intense blue with white decals, also white with black decals 91, red with black splash with white decals on black and silver 92, Antelope - sour grape with white decals 94, floating violet/black fade with white decals, also steel blue with black decals 95, Mercury silver/steel blue fade with black decals, also ice green with blue decals 96, Saturn silver/ice indigo fade with ice indigo decals, also dry ice red with black decals 97, dry ice blue with black decals

It was Converted to SS back in Early 08 . Thanks guys for helping me out ,I was thinking the 80's but now i see its early 90's

Do you mind if I piggyback on this thread? I built up a black Antelope frame and fork that had the same headtube badge. The thing is it has pencil seatstays at the seat-tube and an 1-1/8 headtube (threaded). I thought by the time the 1-1/8 headtube was introduced; pencil seatstays were long gone. Any idea?

trek antelope 850 mountain bike

All I can say is: Hot bike! Saw one exactly like that (same year even) at the grocery store about two years ago.

Ingemar I bought mine in 1982 or 83.

The Trek 830 is a popular mountain bike known for its durability and versatile riding capabilities. Over the years, it has received numerous positive reviews from riders who have used it on various terrains, proving its worth as a reliable bicycle for beginner and intermediate riders.

It stands out as a good mountain bike for those who seek a reliable and sturdy option for light off-roading and urban usage. Its 21-speed configuration and suspension fork provide smooth shifting and handling on different terrains.

Moreover, the bulletproof frame has remained popular for riders who value durability . Its drivetrain and chain rings help transfer power to the bike’s wheels.

Design and Structure

When delving into the Trek 830 review, one cannot overlook the significance of its design and structure. A bicycle's design and construction are pivotal in determining its performance, comfort, and suitability for various terrains.

In this section, we’ll thoroughly analyze the Trek 830's frame materials, suspension, wheels and tires to understand how they contribute to its versatility and reliability on urban streets and off-road trails.

The Trek 830 is known for its sturdy steel frame, which offers significant durability. It has been designed to withstand years of regular use, and many users have reported that their Trek 830 still functions well even after decades of use.

The construction of the frame contributes to the bike's stability, allowing the rider to have confidence in its ability to handle different types of terrain and conditions.

Regarding suspension, the Trek 830 features a front suspension fork. This component helps smoothen the ride while navigating rough trails or uneven surfaces.

Although it may not have the advanced technology found in some modern mountain bikes, the front suspension is still effective in providing a comfortable riding experience.

Wheel and Tires

The wheels, rims, and tires of the Trek 830 are designed for mountain biking, granting the rider better traction and control on various surfaces. The bike originally comes with 26-inch wheels, widely considered reliable and suitable for rough terrains and gravel roads.

The tires are suitable for off-road adventures and can be replaced with slicker tires for a smoother ride on paved surfaces.

Key Features

In this section, we’ll discuss the key features of the Trek 830 mountain bike. We’ll cover aspects like grip shifts and controls, forks and pedals, and shocks and brakes.

Grip Shifts and Controls

The Trek 830 features 21-speed grip shifts that provide better control and smooth shifting across various terrains. These grip shifts are positioned on the handlebars and are made for a comfortable and easy-to-use shifting experience.

With its reliable Shimano components and relaxed geometry,  cyclists can trust this bike for smooth control and performance.

Fork and Pedals

The bike includes a suspension fork that enhances the ride quality and, while not the most advanced, still does an adequate job of absorbing bumps and shocks from rough terrain. This fork from Rock Shox provides a good balance between stability and comfort on surfaces like rocky or loose tracks.

As for the pedals, they are durable and designed to handle various off-road challenges without compromising the rider's safety.

Shocks and Brakes

Although the Trek 830 has a somewhat basic suspension system, it still offers a decent level of shock absorption for a pleasurable riding experience. The bike's suspension and sturdy frame allow riders to roll smoothly on tough terrains.

Also, the Trek 830 is equipped with efficient brakes that offer dependable and responsive braking in different conditions for reliable stopping power. This feature helps ensure riders' safety and enables them to have more control over their ride.

Riding Experience

Now, let’s discuss the riding experience of the Trek 830, focusing on trail riding and road as well as city commuting. As an avid cyclist, I’ve ridden the Trek 830 in various conditions and terrains, and I'll share my thoughts on how it performs.

Trail Riding

When it comes to trail riding, the Trek 830 holds its ground quite well. The bike's sturdy frame, fenders, and suspension fork allow it to tackle dirt trails, loose rocks, and mud. However, it may not be the best choice for tackling more technical trails or extreme off-road conditions.

Road and City Commuting

The Trek 830 also shines as a road and city commuter bike. With its 21 speeds, riders can easily navigate various terrains, including a greenway and campus. The bike's durability ensures it can withstand the wear and tear of daily use, ensuring it can remain in good shape for an extended period.

This bike should be adjusted and tuned to perform well in commuting, making it a versatile choice for cyclists seeking off-road and urban adventures.

Mountain biking is more than just a hobby for me - it's a way of life. I love the challenge and excitement that comes with it, and I'm always pushing myself to go faster and ride harder. Some people might think that mountain biking is dangerous, but I see it as the only way to live.

Trek 830 Restoration (Antelope)

Vintage Trek 830 Restoration: I found this bike for $30 and gave it new life for rides around town. This was my experience bringing it back to life.

My wife hasn’t had a bike in years, but when I found this dirty Trek 830 Antelope for sale on offer up, I picked it up for $30!! It felt like the deal of a lifetime. There’s tons of life still in this bike.

Vintage Trek 830 Antelope Original Condition

How to find vintage mountain bikes to fix up?

There seems to be three main places to look for vintage mountain bikes. Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp. The recent 90s MTB renaissance has made the bikes slightly more in demand so people who know this have them priced higher.

Here’s my thoughts on finding one at a great price. Craigslist seems to have the most bikes, but often priced higher. OfferUp has lower prices, but you have to search longer. Also, try searching for your “desired brand + mountain bike” vs searching for the model. People have these sitting around, but with less knowledge probably don’t list the bike as “1992 trek 930”.

This is my second vintage trek project. Previously I worked on a 1990 Trek 930 Singletrack restoration that I still ride a ton. That project is over here.

Trek 830 Deal of a Lifetime?

Looking for a vintage Trek 830 restoration project, I would have been happy finding any bike from 800 to 900. When I saw this 830 online for $30, I knew I need it to get it. It was listed as “Trek Mountain Bike” 15 years old. LOL. It’s probably 30 years old and has been sitting in the garage for 15 years. The condition almost didn’t matter. But I learned an important lesson.

When I arrived at the house, I lost focus. The house was a beautiful multi-million dollar place. The bike was kept in the garage. I assumed this bike had been taken care of a bit. Wrong. And lesson learned. Never assume condition.

At some point, something fell and hit the top tube. This bent the rear dropouts and put the rear wheel out of alignment. The person selling this bike knew something wasn’t right with the bike because the shifting wasn’t working, but I didn’t ask questions because the deal seemed good at any price. It turned out the shifter was blown, but there were also other issues to fix up. Thankfully the frame is still straight minus the small dent in the top tube which would be hard to see if you weren’t looking. Lesson learned. I wouldn’t resell this bike without disclosing that information.

Trek 830 Clean Up

The paint underlying this bike was actually pretty nice. That red really pops!! It was under a film of dust that had been hardening for decades. And the whole bike smelled like smoke! I spent hours carefully scrubbing with soap and water trying to only take off the dust and remnants of duct tape that were hardened to the frame.

Vintage Trek 830 Antelope Clean Paint

It came out looking great!!

Trek 830 Components Going Forward

First steps in vintage Trek 830 restoration project: Remove everything. Clean it all and then make decisions. What to let go of? What to keep?

New Components Added

(Affiliate Links below – these are the actual parts that I purchased for this project)

trek antelope 850 mountain bike

Brake Levers . These are actually pretty nice considering how cheap they are. I don’t expect this bike to get ridden hard, so these will be perfect.

Brooks B67 Saddle . The Brooks B67saddle upgrade really was for me (I didn’t tell my wife this though). I probably could have added much cheaper seat and my wife would not have cared, but I was interested in how this seat would work with the springs and I figured if she didn’t like it, I would be able to add this to a future bike I work on. The result. It’s pretty awesome. The springs are loaded strong and it’s not like a typical beach cruiser seat that bounces with you, but there is a little give there.

Cruiser style handlebars. I really wanted handlebars that would put my wife in a comfortable position and I didn’t want to replace the stem because that opens up a whole new level of stuff to buy. These handlebars had a lot of sweep and rise.

7 speed shifter . The right shifter was torched on the original bike. AND the shifters on this bike were connected to the brake levers. At the end of the day, I decided to add new levers and shifters. Personally, I like friction shifters and had a 3x front shifter in my parts bin. This was a decent Shimano shifter that I found and it works great for the job.

Crankset from leftover from my Trek 950

RaceFace Grips . I love these so I added them here. They feel amazing.

Housing and Cables . The original cables were rusted out and adding new cables and housing makes the bike look sharp and clean. Plus, it’s actually not that expensive to add this. Also, I love the process of rebuilding the bike with new cables.

New 7 Speed Chain . This is an off brand chain. It’s cheaper and will do the job for this bike. If I was Bikepacking on this, I would pay up for a better one.

Vintage Trek 830 Antelope Restoration After

We took the bikes out on our anniversary and rode around town. It was so much fun. My wife loved the bike and now we also ride around the neighborhood with the kids.
