A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

When investing in a quality bike like Trek, you must register your bike on their website, and if you are buying a used model, you can use the same resource for due diligence to make sure the bike you buy is legit – but where do you find the Trek serial number?

To find the serial number on your Trek bike, you need to turn it upside down and let it rest on the handlebars. The bike’s serial number is marked on the underside of the frame, close to the bottom bracket. You can check the serial number using this link to the Trek website.

Trek USA offers an online service where you can look up your Trek Bike serial number or register a new one so that in the event you want to sell yours, buy another one, or yours is stolen, the bike’s relevant information is a click away- so let’s discover more on how to lookup a Trek Bike serial number.

What Information Is Contained In A Trek Bike Serial Number?

In the old days, serial numbers were used mostly to reveal basic information about a product – mostly how many had been made of a model if there was only one.

As more models were made and released, manufacturers began to use serial numbers to provide information on the model type, year of manufacture, the material used, etc. With bike manufacturers like Trek, it became useful to have serial numbers that provided more details about the bike for themselves and the customers.

Trek serial numbers contain information that includes the year of manufacture, the plant manufacturing code, which determines at which facility the bike was made, the day of the year that the bike was made and what number the bike was in the production run on that day.

What The Trek Bike Serial Numbers Mean?

From the early 90s until current, Trek has used the prefix WTU on their serial numbers, with a three-digit number following that and then a single capital letter. Then five digits for the serial number and a final letter to end.

Let’s look at an example and decode what these numbers mean.

For a Trek serial number WTU295D85467D – the serial number would be broken down as follows:

  • After WTU, 295 is the sequential date number from the beginning of the year-so 295 means this frame was made on the 295 th day of the year.
  • The 85467 would be the bike’s serial number.
  • The letter D at the end stands for the year 2009, while the letter D after the first three numbers would be the plant where the bike was made.

Based on this configuration and data recovered from a Trek recall notice, we can deduce that the Trek serial numbers use a letter at the end to denote the year of manufacture. With the serial number above, the letter D is the year 2009, and the list below would then represent the years prior and post.

So the very first piece of information on your Trek bike you can identify is the year of it’s manufacture, and you can use this table to determine what year your Trek bike was made.

From the information available, the numbers that follow the WTU and the day number of manufacture, the next letter or group of letters are thought to indicate the manufacturing plant where the bike was made.

Trek themselves aren’t very forthcoming about their serial numbers, only what has been described above. They don’t specify whether the serial number code includes the frame size or material type information.

Vintage Trek Bike Serial Number Lookup

Trek has been in business for a long time, and many still have vintage Trek bikes dating back to the 1970s. To establish a database of serial numbers and to decode them, a survey of more than 200 Trek owners revealed how Trek serial numbers were utilised on bikes from around 1976 to before the late 1980s.

Here, the serial number configuration was LNLNLNN, where L= Letter and N=Number, so let’s look at the serial numbers and letters and what they would mean on a vintage Trek bike.

The first letter is the frame model, and the first number is the frame size. So if the serial number begins with A1, the A would represent the Frame model 210, and the one would define a 19.75″ frame.

The letter after that represents the month the frame was serialized, so A would mean January, B would be February, etc.

The second number represents the last digit of the year of serializing and is not a reference to the year model. The final three places of the serial number have letters from A through Z and numbers from 01-99.

The letters are thought to relate to the run’s designation, and the last two letters could relate to the frame number in that run. As an example, if the serial number on your Trek bike were D5F8J57, then that would tell you the following :

  • D- Frame model 510
  • 5 –  25,5″ frame size
  • F – The month of serialization would be June
  • 8 –  1978 is the year of serialization
  • J – Designating the 10 th run
  • 57 – the 57 th frame of the run

You can see the complete serial number survey with all the various models and exceptions here , so you can get some info using this reference to look up your vintage Trek bike serial number.

It seems odd that such a prolific manufacturer of arguably the world’s best bicycles offers no concrete information on the structure of its serial numbers, and while the registration and recovery service is a plus, submitting a Trek serial number on their website will give you a good idea of your bike and it’s history.

Since not every bike owner is interested in decoding their Trek serial numbers and only concerned with registering their bike in case it gets stolen or needs basic information, this could be why Trek hasn’t released detailed information on their serial numbers yet.

The Tour de France is as much a showcase for road bikes as it is about racing and tactical prowess. Being the biggest event in pro cycling, team equipment sponsors are keen to get their riders on the best of the best, often using the race as a launching pad for new gear.

Sometimes there are big innovations. More often, though, are incremental improvements year over year. But zoom out a couple of decades and yesterday’s bikes are almost unrecognizable from today’s machines. Two things have stayed the same in 20 years: bikes have a double-triangle frame design and are constrained by a UCI (the sport’s governing body)-mandated minimum weight of 6.8 kilograms (15 pounds). Otherwise, just about everything has changed in one way or another.

1. Carbon is the only way to go

Twenty years ago, carbon fiber had already begun to usurp aluminum, titanium and steel as the frame material of choice, but it was still early days. Many frames bonded carbon tubes to metal lugs. Nowadays, it’s all carbon, allowing for lighter, stiffer frames with tube shapes unattainable using metals.

2. Better carbon fiber

Not all carbon is made the same. Modern frames utilize higher quality composite materials that, coupled with better construction techniques, allow frames to achieve stiffness targets with less material.

3. Aerodynamic tube shapes

Everyone in cycling 20 years ago knew that aerodynamics mattered. But it hasn’t been until more recently that aero has become everything. Carbon fiber has allowed engineers to go wild creating precise tube shapes that cheat the wind — within UCI regulations of course. The more aerodynamic the rider and the bike, the less energy riders have to expend to go the same speed. That energy lost only compounds in importance for a three-week grand tour.

4. Disc brakes 

Hydraulic disc brakes were already in use in mountain biking 20 years ago, but it took until about five years ago for them to be widely adopted in road cycling. The advantages are twofold: more consistent braking in all weather conditions and the ability to run wider tires by removing the tight clearance of brake calipers surrounding tires. Disc brakes come with a weight penalty, but that’s made up for by everything else becoming lighter in recent years.

5. Internal cable routing

Aero is everything, as they say. Hiding cables inside the frame removes one more thing interfering with airflow across a bike frame. Plus, hey, it looks cool

6. Electronic shifting

But what’s cooler than internal cables? Try no cables. Electronic shifting has been the norm in cycling for over a decade now, first with Shimano’s wired Di2 system and Campagnolo’s EPS, then SRAM took everything wireless with eTap AXS. The systems mean precision shifting every time — just remember to charge the batteries.

7. More gears

A cutting-edge bike in 2004 had a 10-speed cassette on the rear hub coupled with two chainrings on the crank for 20 gears total. Today, bikes have 12-speed cassettes for a total of 24 gears. Though sometimes, especially in time trials, teams will opt for just one chainring up front for a lighter, more aero setup.

8. Wider gear ranges

Cassettes of the past resembled a corn cob because they only increased gear size by one or two teeth with each gear. The easiest gear in the cassette would top out at 23 teeth. Machismo kept riders pushing large gears while climbing. Today, however, riders prefer to spin easier gears at higher cadences—a 30-tooth low gear has become normal, with 34 teeth (or more) being not unheard of—which often results in faster times up climbs.

9. Integrated cockpit

Modern-day road bikes don’t just have brake hoses hidden in the frame. Nowadays, they’re often hidden in the stems and handlebar as well. Brake hoses are routed through beautifully constructed one-piece handlebar-stem combinations made of carbon. Doing so creates a more aero front end of the bike, and, once again, it looks cool!

10. Handlebar profile

The shape of drop-bar handlebars has changed as well, with the traditional rounded profile of the handlebar drops giving way to a compact shape that provides easier access to the brakes and shifters. The tops are often an airfoil shape, again in the name of aerodynamics.

11. Wide tires at low pressures

We used to believe that skinny tires — 23mm or less in width — pumped up to 120 or even 140 psi were the fastest option out there. Now we know that that’s far from the case, with 28mm or even 30mm tires run at far lower tire pressures — sometimes in the 40 or 50 psi range — becoming the norm. They have less rolling resistance and are more comfortable, a win-win. You can thank disc brakes for this win-win, as rim brake bikes often struggled to fit tires quite this big.

12. Tubeless tires — no more glue

Tubular tires glued on to rims were the prevailing norm for over a century in bike racing. Now teams are moving to tubeless tires because they offer lower rolling resistance. Though the old-fashioned ones have the added safety benefit of staying glued on when they go flat, that’s not always the case for tubeless tires.

13. Carbon aero wheels with wider rims

Two decades ago, carbon aero wheels in the pro peloton were still the exception. Today, you won’t find a single bike without them. Wider rims have also come around to better accommodate today’s wider tires and make for a more aero transition from tire to rim.

14. Saddles: shorter and wider 

Saddles have gotten shorter and wider in recent years, spurred on by research showing that to be more comfortable and ultimately faster for many riders. Oh, and of course the rails are made of carbon now.

15. Bike computers

Bike computers used to simply count the revolutions of a magnet on the front wheel against a sensor on the fork to display speed and distance. Fancier ones could tap into power meters and heart rate monitors. Today’s computers are essentially smartphones without a call function, displaying a real-time map with GPS data, climb profiles, speed, distance, power, heart rate and a million more metrics that most of us wouldn’t understand.

16. Same weight, more features

Bikes are still mandated by the UCI, cycling’s governing body, to be a minimum of 6.8 kilograms (15 pounds). Bikes could be built much lighter than that, but the limit allows bike manufacturers to incorporate deeper, aero tube shapes and rim profiles, disc brakes and extras like bike computers and power meters while still reaching about the same weight as 20 years ago.

    It's a 1990 Trek 950. Size 21 inches. Original owner had it listed. She'd ridden it for many years, then it was left in her garage. Still had original tires on it!! The one downside for me with this bike is the shock. I didn't feel like rebuilding one or adding a new one.
