13 Best Travel Size Deodorant Sprays

Deodorant is a product that’s relatively easy to find. You can buy them practically anywhere! However, if you’re not too sure about the quality of local brands, then it’s best to pack a travel size deodorant spray before you board the plane. The good news is, here we’ve rounded up some of the best alternatives to a travel size deodorant spray. And to improve your strategy in keeping those sweaty and smelly underarms away, we’ve also got some helpful tips on choosing the best deodorant for travel. So, are you guys ready? Let’s get started right away!

How to Choose The Best Travel Size Deodorant Spray

If you’re someone who travels a lot, smelly underarm can indeed be a problem. The tiring hours in the airplane cabin or transit can trigger sweat and unpleasant odors around the armpit area. Unless you want to torment your neighbors, then we recommend keeping a travel size deodorant spray within reach.

The problem is, with so many models and brands available out there, how can you tell exactly which size travel deodorant spray to get? Well, to help you solve this problem, we decided to come up with a quick buying guide. Hopefully, these factors will make it easier for you to decide which is the best deodorant for travel that will work best with your purpose and budget.

TSA Approved

The first rule in choosing a travel size deodorant spray is, make sure that it complies with TSA regulations. If you prefer a liquid product, see if it comes in a pack no bigger than 3.4 ounces (with a clear marking on the container). Apart from that, make sure that you put the deodorant in a see-through bag or any other easily accessible place.

A travel size deodorant spray generally contains a lot of chemicals. But there’s one element you’ll want to avoid and that’s aluminum. Several studies have shown that this type of deodorant can be a major cause of cancer and Alzheimer’s. Additionally, aluminum-free deodorants are often thought to have a more natural and better effect at keeping sweat and odor away from the armpits.

And speaking of sprays, don’t forget to check out our list of the 13 best waterproofing sprays . Find some amazing products to protect your belongings from mild moisture and water. It’ll be great if you plan on doing some intense activity in a wet environment anytime soon!

Destinations

Last but not least, think about your destination. Make sure that as soon as you land, you can easily go to the nearest store, and get the best deodorant for travel that fits your standards. Please note that you may have a hard time finding some of your favorite Western brands when traveling around Asia or Africa. So, if it’s deemed necessary, you can pack your favorite travel size deodorant spray beforehand.

What Size is Travel Size Deodorant?

Travel size deodorants usually come in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces. It’s made so that you can carry the product into the aircraft cabin, in case you need to use it mid-flight. However, you may want to double-check TSA policies to be absolutely sure that your favorite brand is safe for air travel.

Is Spray Deodorant Bad for Your Lungs?

There are several studies showing that inhaling deodorant fluids can lead to conditions such as allergies, asthma, and difficulty in breathing. This is mostly because the deodorants use harmful chemicals, such as aluminum and parabens. In order to avoid such unfortunate situations, you can consider using natural mineral salt deodorant and spraying it from a safe distance.

Can I Bring Deodorant Spray on a Plane?

Yes, but only in limited quantities. Also, make sure that you pack it in your checked baggage. The TSA has determined that liquids, gels, and aerosols can be carried in aircraft cabins in moderation. But to be sure, contact your local authority for more information.

And in case you need a special bag to carry your personal care products, we’ve just the right solution. Check out our list of the 13 best toiletry bags for travel . You’ll find some great products that can reduce the clutter in your luggage and keep things organized!

Tips for Packing Deodorant

Packing your toiletries (including deodorant) does not have to be challenging! TFG readers had some great tips and tricks to share about how you can pack your products for maximum space.

If you don’t have an empty container, another reader suggests using an empty chapstick container instead.

And, if you’re working with a gel instead, another reader said that you “squeeze it out into little travel plastic screw jars. Saves sooo much space. (It’s also an eye opener to see how little there is in those giant plastic applicator bottles it normally comes in).”

These are the best travel containers !

We all sweat —some of us more than others. The choice of how to deal with perspiration (and the smells that come with it) is a personal one. First, you should know that deodorants control odor while antiperspirants reduce sweating. If you prefer spray deodorants or want to branch out from the everyday stick, you’ve come to the right place.

“A spray deodorant is an aerosolized formula of a stick,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hysem Eldik, MD . He explains that the active ingredient in both types of antiperspirant (the stuff that prevents wet pits) is usually the same. “Antiperspirants will cut back on both smell and the amount of sweat by actually blocking sweat ducts due to the aluminum,” Dr. Eldik tells Byrdie.

We conducted hours of research to find the best spray deodorants available. We reviewed some top-rated formulas, noting how well they went on and how effective they were against wetness and odors. Our team combined this information with fan favorites research and dermatologist recommendations to create our list of best picks.

  • What To Look For

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, dove original antiperspirant aerosol dry spray deodorant.

Dries quickly

Doesn't leave streaks

Dermatologist recommended

Some users expressed disappointment with the deodorant’s strong scent

Active Ingredients: Aluminum chlorohydrate | Amount: 3.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This dry spray formula promises to keep your pits dry and odor-free for up to 48 hours. Although it prevents wetness, it leaves your underarms moisturized . As Dr. Eldik mentioned, there are many options, but the light, slightly floral Original scent is an all-around winner. We love that it’s fast-drying and doesn’t streak our clothes.

Who It’s For

This spray is ideal for busy mornings when you need to jump out of the shower and get dressed immediately—without fear of your deodorant leaving white marks on your clothes. Plus, it received almost a five-star rating because of how long the scent stays with you throughout your day.

Best Drugstore Spray Deodorant

Degree black + white antiperspirant & deodorant dry spray.

Prevents yellow stains

Long lasting

Some users reported white bits under their arms after spraying the deodorant

Active ingredients: Aluminum sesquichlorohydrate | Amount: 3.8 oz | Cruelty-free: No

Degree reigns supreme in the drugstore deodorant category. This antiperspirant delivers a clear finish that won't streak your favorite black dress as you head out the door and promises not to leave yellow stains on your white T-shirts, either. Promising 72 hours of sweat and odor protection, we’d say this is a great option for long days when you know you’ll need extra defense against offensive odors.

Choose this spray if you want a deodorant that doesn’t streak or leave yellow stains. If you’re constantly on the go, you’ll want a deodorant that’ll move with you and smell fresh all day similar to the best deodorants for men .

Best Unscented

Crystal mineral deodorant spray unscented.

Natural formula

Kills odor-causing bacteria

No white residue

Not as effective as aluminum

Active Ingredients:  Potassium alum |  Amount:  4 oz |  Cruelty-Free:  Yes

If you prefer unscented formulas, go with this deodorant spray by Crystal . A favorite of Ashley Graham's, this spray deodorant battles stinky bacteria with natural mineral salts and promises not to leave a white residue. When we tested it out, we didn’t notice excessive perspiration or smells after five days in the heat.

It’s fair to be concerned about how aluminum deodorants affect our bodies. This Crystal mineral deodorant is a natural body odor spray made from plant materials and natural ingredients to give you a fragrance-free refresher that’ll eliminate body odor.

Best Splurge

Dior j'adore perfumed deodorant spray.

Not cruelty-free

Active Ingredients: Alcohol, fragrance | Amount: 3.3 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

If you’re looking to invest in your next deodorant, treat yourself to Dior J'adore. The spray formula kills odor-causing bacteria with alcohol and leaves your underarms smelling like an expensive bouquet. Plus, it doubles as a light perfume for those who want their scent incorporated into their deodorant.

This is for fans of the perfume or anyone who wants a slightly more luxurious, fragranced deodorant. And if Dior’s J’Adore scent is already your signature spray, having the deodorant version will bolster your scent recognition with people around you.

Best Crystal

Nakd. thai crystal deodorant spray.

Some users reported that it had long-lasting effects

Dispenser needs improving

Active Ingredients:  Potassium alum |  Amount:  3.3–8.5 oz |  Cruelty-Free:  Yes

The "crystals" in this deodorant are a salt called "potassium alum." This Earth-sourced ingredient is naturally antibacterial, so it keeps the germs that cause body odors away. Even though it's a more expensive option, we think the price tag is worth it for a natural formula if that's your preference.

This is a first-rate pick for those looking for a natural formula that works hard at killing odor-causing bacteria. Plus, it’s unscented, so you can build your scent with lotions and perfumes (and have your underarms stay odor-free) without feeling like you’re overdoing it.

Best Aerosol

Nivea pearl & beauty anti-perspirant deodorant spray.

Absorbs odor

Leaves skin soft

Lasts 48 hours

A user reported that this product left a white cast on their skin

Active Ingredients: Aluminum chlorohydrate, talc | Amount: 5 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

Nivea’s Pearl & Beauty is a proper antiperspirant-deodorant that prevents wetness, absorbs odor, and leaves your underarms silky-soft . What's more, you'll stay dry for up to 48 hours. Unsurprisingly, this product got an almost five-star rating, with people positively remarking on its long-lasting effects and fresh scent.

If you’re looking for a proper aerosol deodorant, consider this option from Nivea. Users reported that it sprays nicely, the scent is long lasting, and it doesn’t contain alcohol. Here’s a pro tip from the brand: Spraying this after shaving your underarms is key for best results.

Public Goods Spray Deodorant

Public Goods

Users reported that the product is long lasting

No scented option

Public Goods makes a fantastic spray deodorant with a minimalist pump bottle containing only two ingredients: bacteria-killing potassium alum and purified water to prevent underarm stench. The clear formula offers 24 hours of protection, is fragrance-free, and won't leave any streaks behind.

If you find general deodorants too irritating on your underarms but still need good odor protection, this option is a must. It’s an all-natural deodorant that doesn’t include harsh chemicals that’ll irritate your skin.

Best for Travel

Ursa major sublime sage natural spray deodorant.

TSA-approved size

Some users have had issues with the bottle

Active Ingredients: Saccharomyces ferment | Amount: 1.7 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Going on a trip? In addition to being small enough to pass TSA carry-on requirements for liquids, this spray bottle calls on pre and probiotic enzymes to tackle funky-smelling germs. The lightweight formula is also aluminum- and baking soda-free if that's your personal preference. Plus, it leaves a delightful lemony sandalwood scent in its wake.

This is the deodorant for anyone who loves traveling with only a carry-on. It’ll pass through security without issues (it’s 1.7 ounces!) and help you smell fresh during your adventures. It’s also non-staining, so you won’t have to worry about ruining your clothes (especially if you like to pack light!).

Best Organic

Eo organic deodorant spray.

Eco-conscious company

Users said that it doesn’t stain their clothes

Active Ingredients:  Ethanol, essential oil blend |  Amount:  4 oz |  Cruelty-Free:  Yes

This USDA-approved organic deodorant kills odor-causing bacteria with ethanol and then graces your underarms with a lovely lavender-grapefruit scent derived from pure essential oils . Users have reported that it doesn’t stain their clothes and dries quickly. And just because it’s a natural option doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a long-lasting scent. People said that the fresh smell lasted throughout the day.

Those who appreciate all-natural, organic, cruelty-free hygiene products will want to consider this option. The formula is made without animal testing, and you only need one to two spritzes under your arms for ongoing freshness.

Best Full-Body

Visha skincare cheek 2 feet body spray.

Kills bacteria-causing odor

Dermatologist developed

Some might find tea tree scent off-putting

Active Ingredients: SD alcohol 40B, witch hazel, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, zinc, aloe | Amount: 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

When you need to freshen up post-workout or don't have time for a shower, reach for Visha's Cheek 2 Feet. This deodorizing body spray uses tea tree oil , aloe , and witch hazel to expel the stinky bacteria in your sweat while alcohol absorbs odors. The product also boasts other benefits, like decreasing the appearance of bumps or razor burn, too.

This spray deodorant is ideal for people who need to stay smelling fresh post-workout but are also on the go 24/7. If you don’t have time for a shower before that post-gym brunch, pack this product, and it’ll leave you smelling fresh with notes of peppermint and thyme.

What to Look for in a Spray Deodorant

  • Ingredients : Many deodorants rely on ingredients like mineral salts, aluminum, or alcohol to offer odor protection, and they may be scented using essential oils or synthetic fragrances. Some of these ingredients may be irritating , so be sure to scan the label for potential irritants before buying. Talk to your primary care provider if your skin gets irritated after you use a new product.
  • Long-lasting protection : Most deodorants promise odor protection lasting anywhere from 12 to 72 hours. If you’re looking for enduring coverage, keep an eye out for options in the 48- or 72-hour range. (Otherwise, just remember to reapply frequently!)
  • Antiperspirant : If you’re hoping to cut down on sweat as well as odor, you might want a deodorant that doubles as an antiperspirant. Not all deodorants do, so be sure to keep an eye out for the word "antiperspirant," in either the product name or description.

You'll want to decide on a new deodorant based on two factors: whether you're seeking antiperspirant coverage and how intense and long lasting you want coverage to be. There are also some aluminum-free options, which will be labeled simply as deodorant, not antiperspirant. “A deodorant will focus on scent more than excess sweating,” says Dr. Eldik. Antiperspirants make that clear on the label, and if you want a longer-lasting product, look for words like "shower to shower" or "extra-strength." If you're looking for a deodorant that will lighten or even underarm skin, opt for one with a  brightening formula .

It's totally normal and acceptable to wear deodorant every day. If you're worried about over-applying deodorant,  experts suggest  using it at night instead of in the morning, for it to be as effective as possible.

If you feel that deodorant isn't properly cutting down your body odor, you might not be using the right product. Some experts think it's best to have a deodorant wardrobe. That's because your needs may vary, depending on the weather, the time of year, your stress and activity levels, and more.

Table of Contents

Deodorant and anti-perspirants are available worldwide, but the quality of local products varies widely. If you’re planning to pack your deodorant, instead of buy when you land, here are the best options for travel deodorants.

You know when transit stinks , but not only because of the long hours you’re spending en route? A smelly neighbor can can make a long trip feel even longer, and you, as a conscious traveler, want to avoid being that person for those in your midst.

Keep both sweat and smelly pits at bay—here are our top picks for the best travel deodorants and antiperspirants on the market, plus things to think about as you make your deodorant game-plan.

Can You Bring Deodorant On a Plane? & Other Considerations

Tsa deodorant requirements.

Finding TSA-friendly deodorant is key for carry-on only travelers (bravo!).

If you’re planning to stick with stick deodorant for your trip, almost any size can pass through TSA security. Deodorant powders, stones, and crystals are good to go, too.

If your deodorant game is more the liquid variety, you’ll need to make sure your deodorant is packaged in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (clearly marked) and placed in a see-through bag. This is true for spray, liquid, gel, cream, pastes, and roll-on deodorants.

Aluminum-Free (yes, this matters)

I highly recommend packing an aluminum free deodorant for travel. Some deodorant use has been linked to a higher potential for cancer or alzheimer’s; while this has largely been debunked as a myth, aluminum-free deodorant still offers perks like a healthier, more natural sweat and clearer under-arm pores. You can beat odor with natural ingredients—more on this below.

Read more about this topic on the Wirecutter here .

Your Travel Destination

Americans use deodorant more than any other nationality worldwide (although Brazil is a close second). So, as a traveler who strives to be odor-free, where can you maintain your western standards? Where can you fly in and buy deodorant?

Most destinations in Europe and across Oceania are safe for access to deodorant, including brands that you’re probably familiar with. You will have a harder time getting your hands on deodorant brands you recognize in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Of course, you can buy deodorant just about everywhere, but do you really want to use Thai deodorant? Maybe, maybe not.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely pay a higher premium for familiar Western brands in these countries, so it might make more financial sense to stock up now rather than later.

Travel Size vs. Full Size Deodorant

Depending on the length of your travels—or your destination—you might consider stocking up on different deodorant sizes. Travel-sized toiletries have obvious benefits: They take up less space, are lighter-weight, and can give you a headstart in your travel destination. Since you’ll be settling in for a few days or weeks, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to scope out nearby shops or pharmacies to purchase larger toiletries if necessary.

Pick the product size that’s right for your pack, your destination (trust me, you don’t want to buy local deodorant in Guatemala), and your travel timeline!

The Best Travel-Sized Deodorant

Not only are travel-sized toiletries pretty cute (so tiny!), they can be an effective packing method if you’re tight on space. Mini-deodorants can give you a headstart if you’re traveling for an extended period of time or can cover your entire trip if its a shorter jaunt.

  • For men: Every Man Jack Activated Charcoal Deodorant , $6
  • For women : Native Coconut & Vanilla Mini , $3

The Best Full Size Deodorant

Most full-sized stick deodorants weigh between 3-4oz, so unless you’re hyper-concerned about packweight, shaving the 2 ounces off for a travel-sized might not seem worth it.

  • For men: Every Man Jack Sandalwood Deodorant , $6
  • For women : Secret Clinical Strength Antiperspirant Deodorant , $8

Stones vs. Sprays vs. Liquids

The personal care market is flush with alternatives to a typical deodorant stick. There are stones, wipes, pastes—not to mention other more readily available alternatives like sprays and liquids.

The Best Deodorant Stones for Travel

Deodorant stones have been around for decades. Made of natural mineral salts, the deodorant forms an invisible layer of scentless protection to create an environment hostile to odor-causing bacteria. They’re also typically paraben and chemical-free!

  • Crystal Body Deodorant Rock , $6
  • Lehman’s Deodorant Stone , $13

Best Travel-Sized Deodorant Spray

Some folks swear by deodorant spray since it can work double-time as both a deodorant and a general body freshener. Dove products sweep the market in terms of their accessibility (available just about anywhere), affordability, and their travel-sized aerosol spray can deodorants!

  • For men: Dove Men+Care 1 Oz. Clean Comfort Dry Spray , $5
  • For women : Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant, Cool Essentials , $2

Best Liquid Deodorant for Travel

Liquid deodorant is applied in the same way you’d apply a typical stick deodorant, but comes in a ball-top bottle with a liquid solution that rolls on evenly. It can even come as a cream or paste that you apply with your own hands. Since these deodorants are typically still wet when applied, we recommend putting it on a few minutes before dressing for your upcoming day of adventures!

  • For women : Meow Meow Lavendar Deodorant Cream , $2
  • For men: Bulldog Skin Care , $6

Natural Deodorants

Natural deodorants have made a strong headway in the personal hygiene market in recent years. Often linked to studies that suggest deodorant and antiperspirant use can lead to negative health impacts, these products thrive thanks to ingredients that allow your body to sweat naturally (and healthily). They also can help prevent skin irritation and other issues that some minerals can inflame in a synthetic deodorant product.

The Best Natural Deodorant for Travel

  • For men: Ursa Major No B.S. deodorant , $18
  • For women : Lovefresh – All Natural Super Strength Deodorant , $12

You can travel stink-free (or close to it) thanks to the best travel deodorants and antiperspirants on the market. Being thoughtful about your approach to travel deodorant can mean more pleasant rides—and smells—for all individuals involved.

And, on behalf of all of the folks bound to sit next to you on a plane or train, or across the rom in that tiny hole-in-the-wall cafe, thank you!

Can you bring deodorant onto a plane? Guidelines for air travelers

Woman in shop chooses deodorant closeup

Air travel has become a commonplace part of modern life, enabling people to traverse vast distances in a matter of hours. However, packing for a flight can be a daunting task, especially with strict airport security regulations in place. One common concern for travelers is whether they can bring deodorant on a plane or how much of it, especially if it’s liquid based.

So, this article will explore the guidelines for carrying deodorant or antiperspirant during air travel, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Understanding carry-on rules

When it comes to packing deodorant or antiperspirant, it is essential to be aware of the rules governing carry-on baggage. The United States’ Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) (along with other international aviation authorities) has established guidelines to ensure the safety of all passengers on board.

Let’s explore the different types of deodorants and see how the rules apply to each.

Liquid and gel restrictions

The primary issue with deodorants is their form, whether liquid, aerosol, or gel. According to TSA regulations, passengers can carry liquids, gels, cream and aerosols in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in their carry-on bags. These containers must fit into a clear, quart-sized, resealable plastic bag. Each passenger is allowed only one such bag.

Note: in case you still have concerns, contact your airline beforehand to ask about their policy on carrying deodorants and antiperspirants.

Roll-on deodorants

Roll-on deodorants come in a wide range of types and are typically available in liquid or gel form. Therefore, as above, they should be placed in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

travel size aerosol deodorant

Solid deodorants

Solid deodorants, be they stick, powder or crystal variants, are designed to be applied in a dry form onto the skin. Thankfully, they are not subject to the same restrictions as liquid or gel-based variants. Solid deodorants are permitted in both carry-on and checked luggage without any size limitations. Therefore, passengers can freely pack their favorite solid deodorant without worrying about TSA regulations.

Note: TSA nevertheless advises against carrying powdered deodorants exceeding 12 ounces in your carry-on, as this might necessitate additional screening during airport security checks.

Gel or cream deodorants

Gel or cream-based deodorants typically come in liquid or gel form. If you use a gel deodorant, you’ll need to ensure that it is in a container of 3.4 ounces or less and placed in a quart-sized plastic bag with other permitted liquid items.

Aerosol and spray deodorants

Aerosol deodorants, which come in spray form, are subject to the same rules as other liquids and gels, as mentioned above: they must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and be packed in a quart-sized plastic bag.

Note: Certain airlines impose restrictions on specific types of aerosol sprays, whereas others have no limitations whatsoever, so please make sure to check with your specific airline.

Why might deodorant pose a security concern?

Although you are allowed to carry deodorant (regulations permitting) while traveling, it’s essential to be aware that security measures can be strict. The rationale behind these guidelines is the potential risk of explosives being concealed within such products, potentially being used to smuggle dangerous items onto an airplane.

So, when preparing for travel, it is prudent to be well-prepared for any security scrutiny. If you plan to carry deodorant in your luggage, it is advisable to adhere to the following recommendations and check the specific regulations of your airline:

  • Place the deodorant in a securely sealed container that is cool and kept away from light to prevent spoilage.
  • Ensure that you do not exceed the permitted quantity of liquid deodorants allowed in your hand luggage.

Substitutes for carry-on deodorant

Numerous alternatives to carry-on deodorant are available for you to bring onto your flight – for instance, body wash, shampoo, and antiperspirants.

Exploring alternative approaches for carrying deodorant

Let’s explore alternative strategies that can help you bring your deodorant on board without running into security-related hurdles.

Obtain a medical authorization

If your deodorant is prescribed by a doctor, you are permitted to carry larger quantities exceeding the standard 3.4 ounces.

When you’re at the airport, ensure you have a copy of your prescription or a valid doctor’s note readily accessible. If you encounter a security check, present the note to a TSA official.

Purchase deodorant just before your flight

A commonly-used method is to buy your deodorant after successfully passing through the security checkpoint. This allows you to carry aerosol spray cans, gels, and any travel-sized liquids in your carry-on without undergoing additional screening.

Opt for a travel-size deodorant

To make air travel more convenient, many brands offer travel-sized deodorants that adhere to TSA guidelines. These mini-sized versions are perfect for carry-on bags, allowing passengers to stay fresh during their journey without worrying about security issues.

By adopting these crafty methods, you can ensure a hassle-free experience at airport security while still keeping your travel essentials close.

Understanding checked luggage rules

For travelers who prefer larger deodorant containers or have liquids exceeding the carry-on restrictions, placing them in checked luggage is a useful option. In checked luggage, there are no specific size limits for deodorants, and they don’t need to be sealed in a plastic bag.

Key points to take away

  • Liquid and g el r estrictions: TSA regulations stipulate that liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols can be carried in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in your carry-on. These must fit within a quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag, with each passenger limited to one bag.
  • Roll- o n d eodorants: these should be in containers of no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), as they typically come in liquid or gel forms.
  • Solid d eodorants: solid deodorants (sticks, powders, crystals) can be packed in both carry-on and checked luggage with no size limit.
  • Gel or c ream d eodorants: these are classed as liquids or gels and therefore must adhere to the 3.4-ounce (100 milliliters) limit and be placed in a quart-sized plastic bag.
  • Aerosol and s pray d eodorants: similar to other liquids and gels, aerosol deodorants must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and placed in a quart-sized plastic bag. Some airlines may have additional restrictions on aerosol sprays, though, so be sure to check with your specific airline.
  • Security c oncerns: while you are allowed to carry deodorant, be aware that strict security measures are in place due to potential risks associated with concealed explosives. This is why following regulations and recommendations is crucial to ensure a smooth security check.
  • Alternatives: if you’re concerned about bringing deodorant in your carry-on, consider alternatives such as body wash, shampoo or antiperspirants.
  • Innovative a pproaches: to avoid security-related challenges, explore other methods such as obtaining medical authorization if your deodorant is prescribed, purchasing deodorant post-security check, or opting for TSA-approved travel-size deodorants.
  • Checked l uggage: for larger containers or quantities exceeding carry-on limits, placing deodorants in checked luggage is a viable option, as these involve no specific size restrictions.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure a stress-free and pleasant journey, arriving at your destination feeling fresh and ready to explore. Happy travels!

Buying Guide: Travel Size Deodorants

Getting ready for a trip but unsure of what deodorant to take? Our handy buyer’s guide will answer all your travel size deodorant questions and give you some tips on how to purchase the right one for you. Read on to make an informed decision.

Why Should You Buy Travel Size Deodorants?

Frequent travelers need smaller-sized products to take with them wherever they go. But there are several requirements for skin care and cosmetics that you can’t overlook. During holidays and trips abroad, deodorants are a must-have. Most choose travel size versions of these items since they’re convenient to carry and apply while traveling. These small deodorants are often TSA-approved and simple to use. They come in scented and unscented forms, both of which include antiperspirant elements. All in all, a travel-friendly deodorant helps you stay smelling fresh while exploring the world.

Factors To Consider When Buying Travel Size Deodorant

Ingredients.

If you’re looking for the most effective deodorant, make sure it’s made entirely of natural ingredients. Aluminum is a chemical used in conventional deodorants that blocks your sweat glands, so be sure it isn’t in your travel size deodorant to prevent suffering from rashes or allergic reactions.

Destination

You should also consider where you’re traveling because not all destinations will have a store nearby. Plus, supermarkets near popular destinations have either low-quality products or the prices are too high. That’s why it’s better to take your favorite deodorant with you. Also remember that while traveling in certain regions — such as across Asia or Africa — you may have trouble finding your preferred mainstream products.

What Should You Look For in a Travel Size Deodorant?

If you want to take your deodorant on the airplane, make sure it is 3.8 ounces or less in size. Having a compact travel size deodorant is useful for all types of travel, not just traveling by air as it can fit easily into your bag without taking up too much room.

Roll-on or aerosol spray

Although the ingredients in both these deodorant types are almost the same, some may prefer roll-on sticks due to the solid texture while others may be inclined towards aerosol sprays due to the hygiene factor. If you have sensitive skin, a roll-on stick is the better choice because it’s less likely to sting or irritate your skin. Sprays may have ingredients that irritate your skin, cause allergic reactions, and even result in breathing problems. Roll-ons are also more organic than aerosol spray cans because they are biodegradable.

While most deodorants provide 24-hour coverage, some companies claim to keep the user dry and smelling good for 36 to 48 hours. You can also get extra-strong antiperspirant pads that provide up to seven days of coverage for those who sweat a lot.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Travel Size Deodorants

Most individuals need to use deodorant once a day, while others need to reapply it again throughout the day to keep excess perspiration at bay. We recommend getting a natural, clinically-approved, and dermatologically-tested deodorant to treat your sweat glands naturally.

It’s better to opt for hypoallergenic deodorants if you’re prone to skin-related diseases or allergies. You can find hypersensitive products with skin-soothing components that offer a cooling effect to soothe irritated skin. As it's generally the scent that causes discomfort, you might be happier with an unscented alternative.

Does Deodorant Need to Be Travel Size? TSA Dos and Don'ts

By Laurie Fanelli in Natural Products

Facebook

While checking off items from your packing list, have you ever stood over your bags, scratched your head, and wondered what can actually go into your carry-on? For example, can you take a bar of soap on a plane? Does deodorant need to be travel size? Vacations are fun, but air travel can be stressful—especially when determining which of your favorite products can come along in your toiletry bag. With a little bit of prep, you can keep calm and carry on what you need by sticking to the approved sizes and forms.

TSA Rules and Restrictions: A Brief History

Since September 11, 2001, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented a number of rules and restrictions to enhance the safety and security of passenger flights. However, its 3-1-1 rule—which limited the amount of liquids, gels, aerosols, and pastes that can be brought in your carry-on bag —wasn't instated until five years later. According to National Public Radio , in 2006, the U.K. government announced that they had discovered a terror plot that involved bringing liquid explosives onto an aircraft in carry-on bags. The 3-1-1 rule was designed in response to this event to prevent large amounts of unknown liquids and semi-liquids to be brought on planes.

Breaking Down the 3-1-1 Rule

So, how do you know that you're following the 3-1-1 rule? The TSA states that liquids, gels, creams, aerosols, and pastes may be carried in your carry-on bag if they're stored in containers that are 3.4 oz or less. This measurement accounts for the number three in the 3-1-1 rule. All your containers must then be placed in a one-quart plastic bag, and only one bag is allowed per passenger.

Exceptions exist for liquid medications and infant and child nourishment, so be sure to chat with an airline representative in advance of your travel plans if you need to take either of these with you onboard. Some common personal care items that need to follow the 3-1-1 rule include the following:

  • bug repellent
  • contact lens solution
  • hand sanitizer
  • liquid and cream cosmetics
  • liquid and semi-liquid deodorants, such as roll-on, spray, and gel varieties

As long as these products are in containers that are 3.4 oz or less, simply place them in a quart-sized plastic bag, and you should have the green light to carry them aboard. Most liquids are okay as long as you follow the 3-1-1 rule. If in doubt, you can pack any products in question into a checked bag to be picked up upon landing.

Solid toiletry items—such as a bar soap, solid deodorant, chapstick, and baby and sanitizing wipes—don't have quantity requirements, so you're all set to carry those with you on the plane as is. For more information, the TSA has a handy-dandy list of everything that's allowed in carry-on (and checked) bags at www.tsa.gov .

Reusable water bottles are great for reducing waste while traveling.

How to Reduce Waste When Traveling

So, does deodorant need to be travel size? If it's a solid, no. If it's an aerosol or liquid, yes. Can you take a bar of soap on a plane? Absolutely. Now you're ready for a safe and stress-free holiday. But there are some other actions you can take to help make your vacation as good as can be.

Instead of purchasing disposable, travel-sized options for your upcoming trip, consider picking up empty reusable containers that are 3.4 oz or smaller. These can be found in many big box stores as well as in most camping or outdoor activity retailers. Not only will this benefit the environment by helping to reduce waste, but you can also fill them with your favorite products from home, such as Tom's of Maine Sea Salt Mouthwash .

Reusable water bottles are also a great way to reduce plastic waste at the airport. The TSA allows passengers to bring empty bottles through the checkpoint. After you get through screening, find a filling station or water fountain to fill up your bottle.

Other ways to reduce waste when traveling are to go paperless as much as possible (think boarding passes and receipts), carry reusable shopping bags for all your fun souvenirs, and say no to plastic straws. If you do need to use a straw, add a reusable straw to your packing list! These come in a variety of materials, shapes, and sizes, and some models even include their own case and cleaning brush.

Looking for more ways to give back? Make your trip more meaningful and connect with the local community by enjoying voluntourism between sightseeing stops. You can also share your favorite ways to reduce waste and engage in green-minded travel on Instagram by tagging @Toms_of_Maine .

Why It's Good

Knowing how to pack before heading to the airport reduces stress and leaves you flying high. Educating yourself on the current TSA guidelines before arriving at the airport will help you ensure that you won't have to leave your favorite products behind.
