Fresh snow cracked under my feet as I passed by an old ranger station and advanced down a well-trodden path to gorgeous Jenny Lake in the heart of Grand Teton National Park. Grand Teton National Park Guide: Visiting Jenny Lake

Nestled at the foot of the Teton Range, Jenny Lake is one of the most visited areas in Grand Teton National Park . The place is big, enticing, and always inviting. The pristine location with incredible vistas of Teewinot Mountain, Mount St. John, and Cascade Canyon allures thousands of visitors every summer. Unable to resist the natural beauty of Grand Teton National Park’s crown possession, the newly-arrival guests explore 1,191-acre Jenny Lake from both the ground and water.

The 256-foot deep lake was formed approximately 12,000 years ago by glaciers that carved Cascade Canyon and formed a terminal moraine. Water soon filled the deep abyss on the territory on present-day Grand Teton, giving birth to Jenny Lake.

It took centuries until humans noticed the stunning natural attraction. Today Jenny Lake never ceases to spoil the visitors of Grand Teton National Park with the panoramic views and a wide range of outdoor activities.

The area is divided into two zones. Calm and quiet on its north shore, Jenny Lake offers endless hiking and boating adventures. On top of the usual outdoor activities prevailing on the opposite side, South Jenny Lake shares its cultural heritage with the seasonal visitors of Grand Teton. This part of the lake houses most of the facilities, including a visitor center, a rustic ranger station, a campground, and docks.

The Best Time to Visit Jenny Lake in Grand Teton

Grand Teton National Park is open all year round, allowing you to visit and witness how Jenny Lake transforms as the seasons change. The place enjoys deep green hues against the giant Grand Teton mountains in spring and summer. A pop of color adorns Jenny Lake in fall, simultaneously marking the decrease in number of people visiting Grand Teton National Park from now on.

Winter is always magical. During this time of the year, Jenny Lake transforms into a classic winter wonderland that Grand Teton is so proud of. Unquestionably, it’s the best time to visit Jenny Lake without sharing it with the crowds of hikers and photographers.

On the other hand, visiting Jenny Lake and most of the other places in Grand Teton in winter can present some challenges. Covered with snow and ice, some roads in the park become inaccessible for cars from approximately November though May. The main roadways, Highway US 89/191 and Highway US 26/287, however, are plowed from Jackson to Flagg Ranch in Yellowstone National Park . They stay open for the outdoor enthusiasts visiting Jenny Lake and the other landmarks of Grand Teton in winter.

Most of the park’s inner roads, though, get closed. With their closure, many of the places in Grand Teton, including some parts of Jenny Lake, become unreachable for the majority of the guests visiting the park during this season. The most adventurous outdoor explorers, however, switch from a four-wheeled transport to snowshoe, ski, or snowmobile and continue enjoying the astounding views of Grand Teton and particularly Jenny Lake in a winter wonderland.

Important travel tip when visiting Jenny Lake in Grand Teton in the winter season

The roads in the park can be slippery due to accumulation of snow and ice. So, be sure to drive slowly and watch out for animals lingering near the main routes.

Getting to Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park

Occupying the central place in Grand Teton National Park, Jenny Lake is a short drive away from the quintessential town of Jackson. The city sits about 20 miles away from South Jenny Lake Junction. In terms of time, it takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes traversing along the main roads of Grand Teton to visit Jenny Lake.

Upon arrival, park in a small lot near the visitor center and explore the area on foot or boat across the lake. Visiting Jenny Lake in summer, though, can be irritating as in peak season the parking lots in Grand Teton National Park are almost always busy. You can park next to the right-side curb, but be sure to move your car completely off the road.

Jenny Lake is the ultimate travel destination in Grand Teton National Park. And like any place in a national park, you must pay before having the privilege of visiting it. A 7-day Grand Teton National Park pass costs $35. Entrance fee for bikers or hikers is $20. Motorcyclists can visit Grand Teton and drive to its stunning Jenny Lake for $30. Hikes

Boasting some of the picturesque trails in Grand Teton, Jenny Lake allures hikers of all ages and activity levels. Several popular trails start at the south shore and loop the lake, rewarding the persistent visitors with the scenic vistas. Occasionally, Grand Teton’s wild animals join the hikers visiting Jenny Lake, presenting incredible photo opportunities the latter can’t miss.

You can take it easy and stay close to the lake while walking up a trail for a mile or so before returning back. For longer adventures and the most scenic views, loop entire Jenny Lake and visit Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point , two attractions you must see in Grand Teton. If enjoying different views and exploring other natural wonders in the park sounds interesting, hit some hiking trails near Cascade Canyon .

Jenny Lake also takes care of long-distance hikers. The area houses a few trailheads for longer routes such as Lake Solitude Trail and Hurricane Pass. Presenting a lot more challenges, these trails suit best those visitors of the Jenny Lake area that aim for different vistas and attractions in Grand Teton National Park.

Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point Hikes

For those who are satisfied with their immediate surrounding, though, the park’s central landmark invites to explore its popular Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Both places are relatively easy to reach. Hiking trails that lead to them loop Jenny Lake and can be entered from either end of it. To put numbers here for greater clarity, Hidden Falls is a 5-mile round-trip trail. The Inspiration Point trail runs around Jenny Lake for 6 miles.

If you are pressed by time, but don’t want to skip these natural attractions in Grand Teton, consider visiting shuttle dock in the South Jenny Lake area . For a small fee, a shuttle boat will take you across the lake. This will shorten your hike more than in half. From the west boat dock, Hidden Falls is 1/2 mile and Inspiration Point is 1 mile away.

Shuttle Boat Rides Across Jenny Lake

When visiting Jenny Lake, you can skip hiking altogether and instead enjoy the refreshing water and the stunning views from a boat. Easy, breathy, and quite impressive. The shuttle boat across Jenny Lake runs every 10-15 minutes throughout the day. The shuttles operate on a first-come, first-served basis, no prior reservations are accepted.

Prices for the boat rides range from $8 to $18. One-way trips and child tickets are cheaper. Round-trip options are also available. You can purchase your ticket on the East Boat Dock . If you catch the boat after visiting the West Jenny Lake area, pay for your ride upon arrival at the East Dock.

Boating and Floating at Jenny Lake

Don’t feel like joining the crowds and prefer your own type of water transportation? Jenny Lake is one of two lakes (Jackson Lake is the second) in Grand Teton where motorboat access is allowed. Your craft, however, should be propelled by a motor of no more than 10 horsepower.

To enjoy the soothing waters of the lake from your own boat, you also need to get a park boat permit . All motorized and non-motorized boats, including stand-up paddleboards, must comply with this regulation. Inflatable crafts less than 10 feet long don’t fall under this directive, though.

You can obtain your Jenny Lake boat permit at the visitor centers in Moose or Colter Bay or at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center. The price for motorized boats is $40. Non-motorized crafts, including canoes, kayaks, drift boats, and stand-up paddleboards, can cross the lake for $12.

Those who prefer to travel to Grand Teton National Park prepared can bring their own boats. Renting a canoe or kayak at Jenny Lake is a solution for the outdoor enthusiasts, visiting the area with a minimal load.

Jenny Lake Scenic Drive

Visiting Jenny Lake in Grand Teton can be a long or short excursion, depending on your time and preferences. In fact, to admire the astounding surrounding and see most of the lake, you don’t even need to get out of the car. Roll your windows down and keep moving along the Jenny Lake Scenic Drive while taking in the panoramic views.

Start your mini road trip near North Jenny Lake Junction and drive west tower the Grand Teton mountains. Here, turn south onto the one-way scenic drive. Eventually, the Jenny Lake Drive takes you back to the Teton Park Road just north of South Jenny Lake. The 3-mile route is open from late spring until late fall. It takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete the whole trip.

Visit Jenny Lake Visitor Center in Grand Teton National Park

After driving around the lake, stop by at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center . Finding its home inside the historic Harrison Crandall Studio, the place serves as an art gallery and museum. Such devotion to the visual art certainly didn’t come from nowhere. It started with the renowned photographer itself. Crandall, the first official photographer of Grand Teton set up his studio on the shore of Jenny Lake in the late 1920s.

In 2019, the original building went through renovation. Apart from art gallery and museum, the center boasts a bookstore operated by Grand Teton Association.

The place is open daily from late spring through mid-fall. It extends its operating hours during the summers season, the busiest time at Jenny Lake and Grand Teton itself.

Jenny Lake Ranger Station

For any questions, climbing advices, or just a chat with a ranger, head over to the Jenny Lake Ranger Station . Set inside another historic building near the visitor center, the place also issues boat permits and backcountry camping permits. The Jenny Lake Ranger Station accepts only cash. So, be sure to stop at your bank or ATM before venturing into the wilderness.

Ice Fishing in Winter

While the summer season enriches your visit to Jenny Lake with gentle waves and kayaking sessions, winter puts a temporary holt on all of these. The lake freezes over during the colder months, limiting your activities to ice fishing. Thus, switch to a fishing rod, prepare to endure Jenny Lake’s gusty winds, and fish away in a Grand Teton’s winter wonderland.

Photography at Jenny Lake

Photography is my favorite things to do when visiting Jenny Lake. Gazing at pink sky through a viewfinder proved to be worth waking up before dawn . You can’t never shot enough of misty fog lingering just above lake surface. A few minutes lates, the sun clears the sky and illuminates the peaks of the giant mountains in the background, giving different perspectives of the Jenny Lake’s surroundings.

Sunset paints the sky in different colors and gives you a few more reasons to visit Jenny Lake with your camera and tripod. The place can be crowded at this time of the day, so be sure to arrive early to secure the best spot.

While a pop of color adds depth and improves the quality of your Grand Teton’s photography , Jenny Lakes’s stunning reflection photos allure shutterbugs any time of the day. Motionless at one point and moody at another, the large water body eagerly mirrors the still giants, unveiling secrets behind unity and coexistence of two different natural wonders.

If you get deeper into the woods surrounding Jenny Lake, you might be lucky to spot and capture images of some of the wild locals of Grand Teton National Park. Respect their privacy, though, and never get too close while photographing the animals . The wild dwellers don’t hire you to take their portraits. Your intrusion can disturb them. Instead, invest in a zoom lens and always photograph the wildlife at a safe distance.

Grand Teton National Park and Jenny Lake Tours

Where to stay when visiting jenny lake in grand teton.

Depending on the time of your visit, you can stay right on Jenny Lake’s shore or outside Grand Teton National Park. Although the park is open all year round, its facilities, including lodges and campgrounds, operate on a seasonal basis. So, be sure to check the dates and open statutes before your big adventure at Jenny Lake in Grand Teton.

Jenny Lake Lodge

Jenny Lake Lodge is the best place to base yourself for those who want to soak up the stunning environment and breath alpine air the moment they open their eyes. The rustic lodge offers comfort and convenient with a hint of luxury. Its 37 adjoining cabins provide enough solitude and seclusion to feel like you have the whole place to yourself. Jenny Lake Lodge is open from early May through early October. The reservations, however, are accepted all year round.

Jenny Lake Campground

For raw experiences in Grand Teton National Park, get a permit to pitch a tent at the Jenny Lake Campground . This small (only 59 sites) place is set near the east shore of the lake. Each site accommodates maximum two tents, one vehicle, and 6 guests for up to 7 nights. No trailer, campers, or generators are allowed on the ground.

This experience is certainly for the strongest and most devoted nature lovers. The biggest advantage of visiting and staying at the Jenny Lake Campground, however, lies nearby. Stunning views of Teewinot Mountain, Cascade Canyon, and Mount St. John open up literality from the entrance to your tent.

Jackson and Teton Village

Visiting Jenny Lake in Grand Teton in the winter season brings a whole new experience. Staying in the area during this time, however, looses its attraction, and first of all, it’s not allowed. For that reason, choose a place that speaks to your heart among many accommodation options in Jackson and Teton Village . From affordable hotels to luxury resorts, these places can suit all travel budgets. Use any hotel booking sites or book directly with a hotel and enjoy your new home away from home just 15-20 miles (30-40 minutes) away from the Jenny Lake South Junction.

Safety Around Animals when Visiting Jenny Lake

Jenny Lake is home to a wide range of Grand Teton National Park’s wild animals. You can encounter moose and deer grazing near the shore. On some occasions, black and grizzly bears join you for a hike to the prominent sites around Jenny Lake. The wildlife sticks mostly to the woods. Yet, from time to time, the animals don’t shy away from the developed areas of Jenny Lake.

Seeing a wild animal in its natural habitat is one of the most unique experiences ever. However, as the excitement overtakes you, don’t forget about the safety. The wild animals are called wild for a reason. When visiting Jenny Lake or any other areas of Grand Teton National Park, it’s advised to never approach the animals and keep a safe distance. Don’t get closer than 100 yards to bears and wolves. 25 yards is a reasonable distance between you and moose, deer, and other large animals.

Jenny Lake scenic cruise

Excellent scenic cruise led by the very personable and knowledgeable Dodge. Happy to answer questions and gave loads of information about the lake and the mountains. The scenery is stunning.

We did the 1 hour scenic cruise. Our tour guide Travers was excellent! He was very knowledgeable about the area and mountains. He did a great job at answering any and all questions that we had about the area as well! The pictures say a thousand words!

Our experience with our Jenny Lake cruise was wonderful.! Mike was an excellent captain and guide, and offered great knowledge of the history of the park. Very much appreciated that he wove in Native American history and a perspective of the first peoples of this area. The administrative staff was also very kind in allowing us to reschedule the cruise to the next day when we realized that we booked it for the wrong day. The morning on the water was just perfect, what a beautiful way to enjoy the park! Highly recommend, and would absolutely do again!

We took the round trip shuttle across Jenny Lake to access the Hidden Falls Trail Head. I believe the cost for my family was $60 for 4 people round trip. The boat is very simple offering bench seating. The ride is very pleasant and smooth and you can't beat the scenery. The captain offers different facts and tips about some of the Teton trails and wild life which was nice - it wasn't just a silent ride. The safety lecture is thorough and we felt secure the entire time. The company has water available on the docks for your use which was appreciated. The boats run continuously every 15 minutes during their operating hours. The whole experience was very pleasant and I would recommend it for families with kids who don't want to hike around the lake to get to the trails. You can also opt to do it one way if you are looking for the mileage at the end of your hike. If you don't purchase the trip at the boathouse but decide to take the return trip you can get on the boat and will be asked to pay upon docking. Payment is cash only - or at lest was at the time of my trip.

Captain Jerrett is an amazing man! He helped us after we had made the trek from Teton Canyon across Hurricane Pass and down to the lake...a very long hike for a 74 year-old and his son.

Took the boat across the lake to hike to Hidden Falls. We got there early to beat the crowds and the heat! Line went quickly, ride was short and the hike was well worth it!!

Name Origin

Jenny was the Shoshone Indian wife of a British expatriate named Richard "Beaver Dick" Leigh. He moved to the Teton area in 1863 as a fur trapper. Jenny and Beaver Dick assisted the 1872 Hayden expedition - he as their guide, she with camp logistics. The Hayden Expedition named Jenny and Leigh lakes in their honor.

Building History

The Jenny Lake Visitor Center is also known as the Crandall Studio. Harrison Crandall homesteaded near the Cathedral Group Turnout in 1924. He raised 40 head of horses, but his interest was photography. He built his studio in 1927 and later secured the photography concession in the park. Like the Ranger Station, this building has been moved twice. Once from Cathedral Group turnout to the shores of Jenny Lake and then back from the lake to improve the lakeshore views.

Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

A day at jenny lake.

Named for the Shoshone wife of the trapper that gave his name to nearby Leigh Lake, Jenny Lake sits at the base of Cascade Canyon in Grand Teton National Park .

Jenny Lake's verdant shores and nearly two square miles of pristine mountain water make it a popular destination for hikers and boaters of all ability levels.

Jenny Lake is one of only two lakes in Jackson Hole where motorboat access is allowed, but unlike its larger counterpart to the north— Jackson Lake —Jenny offers a scenic shuttle service across its waters.

The area is also home to cozy Jenny Lake Lodge , where charming cabins and fine dining are offered. Plan to have breakfast, lunch or dinner at the lodge; you'll need a reservation if you're not a guest.

Layout The lakeshore is split into two self-explanatory zones: South and North Jenny Lake. The South Jenny Lake area has more amenities and is the location of the visitor center, ranger station, campground, and docks. The north area features a boat launch, picnic area, and trailhead but on the whole, North Jenny Lake is a bit quieter and has fewer crowds.

Getting There Like most locations in Grand Teton National Park , Jenny Lake is easy to find. Multiple signs indicate the North and South recreation areas from the Teton Park Road. Seven-day park passes cost $35 per car, $20 per biker or hiker, and $30 per motorcyclist.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Parking can be limited at the lake and often you will most likely need to park on the road and walk in. We suggest you visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crush of crowds.

South Jenny Lake Rundown

After you've gotten your pass and parked your car, there's only one question left: What to do?

Stop by the Jenny Lake Visitor Center to jump start your adventure. Featuring informational displays and interactive presentations, the visitor center acquaints guests with the area's natural history and geologic significance. Beginning on June 1, the Jenny Lake Visitor Center opens daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. , until its summer closing date of September 4 (it is then open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). You can take a short walk from the visitor center to pick up backcountry permits at the South Jenny Lake Ranger Station, stock up on provisions at the general store, or book trips and glean wisdom from the local office of the legendary Exum Mountain Guides .

Out and About

Hiking Jenny Lake Hiking around Jenny Lake gives you unique views of the Tetons without the demanding climbs typically required to explore the backcountry.  The glassy waters and various tributaries that compose this corner of the Snake River watershed provide a rich opportunity for wildlife viewing of all sorts.  Be mindful of the weather, for it changes quickly, and be sure to stay hydrated while you're trekking around.  Just because you can see water and feel a cool breeze doesn't mean you shouldn't refill your water bottle every chance you get.

The Jenny, String and Leigh Lake trails are all popular routes for day hikers.  As you'd expect, the 7.1 mile Jenny Lake trail loops its namesake and the 3.7 mile String Lake Trail does the same.  The Leigh Lake trail, on the other hand, is an out-and-back hike that follows the eastern shore of Leigh Lake. Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point are also huge hiking destinations accessible from the Jenny Lake shoreline. Read more about this range of short hikes here .

Camping around Jenny Lake What would a trip to the West be without a little "roughing it?"  Camping in a national park is one of the easiest ways to get your boots dirty and enjoy a peaceful camping excursion and the Jenny Lake campground is one of the park's most popular locations for overnights.  All campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park cost $30 a night per site, or $15 for seniors and cardholders.  You must reserve and pay for your campsite six months in advance.

Boating on Jenny Lake

Whether you rent a canoe or kayak at the South Jenny Lake docks, launch your own motorized vessel (provided its engine is sub-10 horsepower), or take the one and only Jenny Lake ferry, the lake's glassy waters are ideal for an afternoon voyage.

Kayak and canoe rentals are available from Jenny Lake Boating for either $20 per hour or $80 per day. Rentals are first-come, first-served. Motor boating permits can be acquired at the visitor center, and cost $20 per day or $40 annually.

Part scenic-tour, part water-taxi, the Jenny Lake shuttle is like nothing else in Jackson.  The ferry departs from South Jenny Lake roughly every 15 minutes and carries you across the water to the Cascade Canyon trailhead.  From here, you can check out Hidden Falls, Inspiration Point, or a different section of Jenny's lakeshore. Round trips on the Jenny Lake shuttle cost $18 for adults, $15 for seniors (age 62 and older), and $10 for children. One-way tickets are $10 for all adults and $8 for children. There is no fee for children age 2 and under or adults over 80. We recommend going in the morning or late afternoon to avoid some of the crowds.

Cycling the Shores of Jenny Lake

Jackson Hole's multi-use pathways broadened the horizons of fun for visitors to Grand Teton National Park.   You can ride your bike all the way up from the town of Jackson, or choose one of two loops contained entirely within the park: the 8-mile jaunt that connects Moose to the South Jenny Lake area, or a shorter 4-mile trip that spans from the Taggart Lake trailhead to the shores of Jenny Lake.  With these pathways, Grand Teton National Park now boasts the largest amount of bike-friendly terrain in the nation. Bonus: Biking to Jenny Lake means you can bypass parking on the road and avoid the crowds!

Jenny Lake Scenic Drive

In order to reach the famous Cascade Canyon Overlook—a definite photo must during your time in Grand Teton National Park—follow the signs at the North Jenny Lake Junction. From there, you'll travel a narrow, one-way road back to the South Jenny Lake  Junction, stopping at the overlook along the way.    Be aware that pedestrians and bikers may also be using the road, not to mention deer, moose, fox and black bears: Drive slowly and give them a "brake."

One Day in Grand Teton National Park: Jenny Lake Boat & Inspiration Point Hike

Do you have just one day in Grand Teton National Park and are wondering about the best things to see and do? This article is for you!

We had the exact same question when planning our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks . After some research, we realized that one of the best day trips in Grand Teton is to take a boat on Jenny Lake followed by a hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point.

Jenny Lake boat trip and hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point is one of the best things to do in Grand Teton National Park!

In addition, there are some other nice places to see and do that will make your day in Grand Teton even more special.

In this article, you can find our experience-based suggestions on what to see and do in Grand Teton in one day . Starting with the Jenny Lake and Inspiration Point hike and ending with additional suggestions such as the famous Mormon Row Barns. Find out!

One day in Grand Teton National Park

The nice thing about this boat & hike excursion at Jenny Lake is that you can make it as short and easy or as long and difficult as you want. Families with very young children and elderly people can opt for a boat ride alone, or combine it with a part of Jenny Lake Trail around the south end of Jenny Lake.

The hike to Hidden Falls is quite easy and is therefore the most popular hike in Grand Teton. The next section of the hike to nearby Inspiration Point requires a bit more effort and determination, but again is something that pretty much anyone in good physical condition should be able to do. And if you really like hiking, you can prolong the hike and walk into Cascade Canyon and beyond.

We visited Grand Teton with three young kids (age 5, 5, and 7 years old at that time) and opted for a boat ride on Jenny Lake in combination with a hike to Inspiration Point. However, we afterwards decided to hike even further and ended up walking a couple of miles into Cascade Canyon.

Below you can read all about our day at Jenny Lake and additional suggestions for your day in Grand Teton.

TIP: If you have one day in Grand Teton National Park and find the planning overwhelming, take a look at this highly-rated tour that covers all the main highlights and includes a boat ride on Jeny Lake as well. It doesn’t include hiking, but lots of wildlife viewing opportunities and is a perfect first introduction to this beautiful park.

Jenny Lake Shuttle Boat

Jenny Lake shuttle boat (also known as Jenny Lake ferry) is the most popular and quickest way to shorten the hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Otherwise, you have to hike around the lake first, which adds about 2.4 miles to your trip each way. The boat ride starts near Jenny Lake Visitor Center and campground. In less than 15 minutes they drop you off at the West Shore Boat Dock on the other side of the lake.

We read that it’s wise to arrive at Jenny Lake early in the morning as the car park at the visitor center gets full very quickly. In summer, shuttle boats run pretty much non-stop starting at 7 AM, so you can take a really early start and beat the crowds. On the other hand, a late afternoon visit can probably be just as enjoyable and it’s a better time for photography, especially at Inspiration Point.

When we arrived at Jenny Lake around 8 AM it was already quite busy; at the car parking, on the boat, and also on the hiking trails. However, we traveled in the first week of August, which is of course the most popular time to visit Grand Teton. It will probably be much quieter if you travel in the shoulder season.

If you rather hike, Jenny Lake Trailhead is also located at the Visitor Center. Or you can also opt to take the boat just one way (either way). If you want to spend the whole day in the Jenny Lake area, then hiking might be a really nice way to explore the area a bit more.

Jenny Lake shuttle boat practical information:

  • Boats run from mid-May till the end of September.
  • In summer (+-Memorial Day to Labor Day) shuttle boats usually run from 7 AM until 7 PM. Before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, they typically operate from 10 AM to 4 PM. Be sure to double-check for up-to-date information, especially if traveling in the shoulder season.
  • Boats depart every 10-15 minutes.
  • Boat ride takes 12 minutes.
  • No reservations are taken, you just take the next available boat.
  • Round-trip costs 20 USD for adults with various discounts for kids and seniors.
  • You can find more info on the shuttle boat here .

TIP: If you don’t like hiking at all, there are scenic boat ride options on Jenny Lake as well. Scenic boat rides have to be reserved in advance to avoid disappointment. Check  here  for more information. You can also simply book this highly-rated day tour of the Grand Teton NP that includes this scenic boat ride in the itinerary.

Hidden Falls Hike

As mentioned above, the Hidden Falls trail is the most popular hike in Grand Teton. There are reports talking about the popularity of this hike in the beginning of the 20th century already, and it’s still very much the case nowadays.

It’s a nice, short, and relatively easy hike to a beautiful waterfall that drops almost two hundred feet in several steps. In combination with a scenic boat ride on Jenny Lake, a trip to the Hidden Falls makes for a beautiful family-friendly day out in Grand Teton. No wonder it’s so popular.

Theoretically, the Hidden Falls hike begins at the Jenny Lake Trailhead. But if you take a boat, then the whole length of the hike is only 1.3 miles (round trip). The path is well indicated from the boat dock and for the most part, follows the same trail that goes up to Inspiration Point.

At first, you climb a bit, but it isn’t really strenuous and even young children can do this short hike. It shouldn’t take you more than 30 minutes one way, maybe a bit more if you walk at a really leisurely pace.

Unfortunately for us, the falls were closed in the summer when we visited, so I don’t have a picture for you. But from what I’ve seen it’s a really beautiful waterfall well worth the short hike.

Cascade Canyon Creek near Hidden Falls

If you have more time and energy, continue hiking to Inspiration Point – see further.

TIP: There are many bears in this area, so travel in groups and make noise (which shouldn’t be an issue in high season).

If you are traveling in the lower season, it’s wise to carry a bear spray . You can buy one at the Jenny Lake visitor center or online at less than half the price. And yes, we saw a bear here when we were in the boat; it crossed the road right behind the unsuspecting tourists hiking on the trail.

Inspiration Point Hike

After visiting the Hidden Falls, return to the main track and turn left towards  Inspiration Point . This part of the trail is really rocky, rugged, and also quite steep.

It’s best to wear good hiking shoes if you are planning to hike to Inspiration Point. Although if it’s dry, I guess you’ll be ok with any sturdy footwear.

Hiking to Inspiration Point in Grand Teton with kids

After a short while, you’ll see the Cathedral Group (Teewinot Mountain, Grand Teton, and Mount Owen). From then on the scenery just gets better.

Soon you’ll reach Inspiration Point with stunning views over Jenny Lake and the area. Judging by the number of friendly squirrels here, it’s a very popular place for a picnic.

Friendly squirrel at Inspiration Point in Grand Teton

The entire hike from Jenny Lake boat dock to Inspiration Point is just 2.2 miles (round trip). It took our family a bit less than an hour one way.

Somehow we expected this whole trip to take much longer, but taking the boat and hiking to Inspiration Point took us less than 1,5 hrs.

So without having many other plans for our day in Grand Teton, we decided to do some more hiking and continued walking further into Cascade Canyon.

View from Inspiration Point in Grand Teton National Park

Hiking to Inspiration Point with Kids

The hike to Inspiration Point is not that long, but it’s really steep with some sections that could potentially be dangerous for young kids. Our boys (5, 5, and 7 years old) had no difficulties with this hike at all. So I think that any child from 4-5 years and up should be able to complete this hike.

If you are not sure if you can manage this hike, you can always give it a try and turn around if you notice that it’s too difficult for your children.

I hear that many families with young children take a Jenny Lake shuttle boat, then hike to Hidden Falls, and hike back along the southern shore of Jenny Lake instead of taking the boat back. That walk is quite flat and easy to do even with younger children.

Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point hike with kids - Grand Teton National Park, WY

To The Forks of Cascade Canyon

From Inspiration Point take a trail heading west into Cascade Canyon . This hike is very different than the previous section as there is hardly any elevation gain. It is well suited for families with children, but of course you first have to climb to Inspiration Point in order to get here.

The first section of the hike goes through a forest and isn’t all that impressive, but after a while it becomes really beautiful. The further you go into the canyon, the better the views get.

I have to say that up to this point we weren’t that impressed with the hike, but going into Cascade Canyon really made our day – the scenery here is simply stunning.

Best National Parks in the USA for families with kids

We had read that this area is frequented by bears, especially in huckleberry and raspberry season. Indeed, there were big wild berry patches along the way, but we didn’t seen any bears here.

Anyway, it’s wise to make noise and carry a bear spray if you hike in this area, especially if you travel in a small group or in lower season or at a less popular time of the day.

No black bears or grizzlies for us, but we ran into a couple of moose in Cascade Canyon. A mother and a young were grazing in a little creek along the way, and we also saw a big male moose in the bushes just next to the road. Picas and marmots live in this area as well.

Moose in Grand Teton NP, Wyoming

The entire hike to the Forks is 10 miles (round trip). We didn’t walk all the way to the end as there isn’t really any particular landmark at that point.

If you are a keen hiker and like to explore the Tetons trekking even further, you can continue to the North Fork of Cascade Canyon , and eventually to Lake Solitude (15.3 miles round trip, so start really early if you are planning on doing this).

There are also longer multi-day hikes possible in this area and we met quite a few hikers who were doing just that. They were fully equipped to hike and camp for a few days and had bear sprays with them. However, a couple who’d been hiking in Grand Teton National Park for 4 days told us they hadn’t seen one single bear.

While we came here for just a few hours and saw one right next to a boat deck. And we also ran into a bear at our hotel later that same day. So in any case, travel well prepared and always be aware that you are in bear country.

Hiking at Cascade Canyon in Grand Teton NP Wyoming

Back to Jenny Lake

After hiking into Cascade Canyon we decided to turn around and head back to Jenny Lake. The hike back follows the exact same trail, but takes even less time since it’s pretty much downhill from Inspiration Point.

We stopped for a short picnic lunch (far away from the squirrels) and after that took the boat back to the visitor center.

In total, we spent about 5 hours in the Jenny Lake area, which still left us with a long afternoon to fill in Grand Teton NP.

Other beautiful places and things to do in Grand Teton NP

One of our other favorite places in Grand Tetons was the scenic Jenny Lake Road , as well as the beautiful String Lake .

We also drove the scenic Signal Mountain Peak Road , but found it not worth the long drive up. It’s nice to see if you have the time, but if you have better plans, don’t feel bad skipping it.

If you are looking for other ideas on what to see and do in Grand Teton, you can drive one of the scenic roads like e.g. The Kelly Loop , go and see the famous Mormon Row Barns , Shane Cabin , or the scenic  Schwabacher’s Landing spot .

String Lake in Grand Teton National Park

Since Grand Teton NP was also one of the last stops of our 2,5-week American road trip , we spent the rest of the day relaxing by the lake at our hotel.

There are also organized tours that you can do in the area. One of the most popular tours is this 4-hr wildlife safari adventure , or this half-day tour that covers the main highlights .

For a truly unforgettable experience in Grand Teton, check out the hot air balloon flight with amazing sunrise views of Grand Teton NP, a helicopter flight above the mountains, or this highly-rated whitewater rafting trip from Jackson (rafting is one of the top things to do in this area in the summer!).

But if you only have one day in Grand Teton National Park, I think you will not be disappointed if you choose to do the Jenny Lake boat ride in combination with a hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. It’s one of the absolute best things to do in Grand Teton NP and is popular for a reason.

Best places to stay for exploring Grand Teton National Park

There are many accommodation options in the neighborhood, and most people choose Jackson Hole or Teton Village as their base for a Grand Teton Holiday.

There are also several extremely well-located accommodations in the heart of Grand Teton National Park, but you have to book well in advance to secure those. For that, see accommodations in Moran .

The nicest lodges in Grand Teton are Jackson Lake Lodge and  Jenny Lake Lodge , but also Signal Mountain Lodge where we stayed has a stunning location and really good cabins. Once again, if traveling in high season, you’ll have to book these a year in advance!

TIP: Using the map below, you can compare hotels and private accommodations in Jackson Hole . This is the most popular place to stay in the area, with the biggest choice of accommodations and facilities. Simply insert your travel dates and group size, and you’ll see what’s available for your stay.

What to know before visiting Grand Teton National Park

  • Grand Teton National Park has an entrance fee. If you are visiting multiple American National Parks in one year, it’s best to buy  America The Beautiful Pass .
  • Many scenic roads in Grand Teton, including the road to get to Jenny Lake, are closed between November and May.
  • Avoid driving at night – there is lots of wildlife in the area and accidents are quite frequent.
  • In high season, you need to book your accommodations well in advance. We booked ours a year upfront.
  • Grand Teton is a bear country, so it’s wise to carry bear spray if you go hiking to less popular areas or at less popular times.
  • You can see the best of Grand Teton in just one day, and many people do just that, devoting more time to the nearby Yellowstone National Park . However, with so many lakes, hiking paths, bike trails, wildlife, and a variety of activities Grand Teton is also a wonderful vacation destination for nature lovers looking for a quieter vacation. We met many people spending their yearly summer holiday here.
  • Grand Teton has a similar climate to Yellowstone, so if you are wondering what to pack, check our summer packing list for Yellowstone .
  • If you can, plan to spend more time in this area. Be sure to check our guide to the best things to do in Jackson Hole . Jackson town is a popular base for visiting Grand Teton National Park, but there’s so much more to see and do nearby than that!
  • If you want to see the best of Grand Teton and Yellowstone in one trip , but find all the planning overwhelming, check out this multi-day tour that visits all the best places . They also arrange accommodation during the tour, making it really simple for you, but last-minute availability is usually limited in summer, so plan at least a few months ahead.

So, this is our short guide for an unforgettable day in Grand Teton National Park.

I hope that this helps you plan your own perfect day trip to Grand Teton NP. Have a great trip!

Sunday 5th of June 2022

Hi! My husband and I are going to Yellowstone and Grand Teton in October, do you know what we could do for an itinerary in Grand Teton?? I know Jenny Lake closes at the end of September so I am not sure if we would still be able to do the hikes or if there are other activities you recommend!

Monday 6th of June 2022

Hi Kassandra, from what I see, you can book a boat ride on Jenny Lake for October and these wildlife tours run at that time of the year as well. So I think you should be able to do quite a lot and pretty much everything described in our article, except hiking at higher elevations. However, we haven't been to the region at that time of the year, so I can't really help you further. But I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to fill one day in Grand Teton at any time of the year. Have a great trip!

Tuesday 31st of May 2022

We are planning our first trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks the last week of June. Your website has helped me get the lay of the land, must see lists, and easy hiking info. We only have a week, so making a plan ahead of time is a must. Thank you so much!

Wednesday 1st of June 2022

Glad to help, Julie. Have a wonderful trip!

Wednesday 13th of October 2021

We are planning to visit grand teton this coming december 26 to december 28. However, i am having second thoughts since after reading your article, it seems that there are no shuttle boat going to hidden falls and inspiration point. Does it mean, we have no chance of seeing these places while in Wyoming?

Thursday 14th of October 2021

@Jurga, thanks for this information

Hi Josephine, Grand Teton will normally have lots of snow in winter, so no, it's not the time to go hiking. There are many other great winter activities though - skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, it's also a good time to see wildlife, etc. So while it's not comparable to a summer visit, it can still be very enjoyable! Take a look also at our guide to things to do in Jackson Hole for some suggestions for all seasons. You can also opt to visit Yellowstone in addition to Grand Teton. There's a really nice winter tour that visits both parks, I see they have a 27/12 departure day as well, but not sure if this would fit with your travel plans... Hope this helps.

Sunday 7th of March 2021

Hi Jurga! Thank you so much for your tips! You make me wish I could go tomorrow! We are visiting the end of August, early September and are planning to visit Grand Teton, then Yellowstone, then Glacier National Park.. I was thinking of staying 2 nights in Jackson Hole- I don't know yet what time we'll fly in and day 1 may be just a travel day. On day 2 we would visit GTNP. Should we stay in Jackson Hole again that night or continue straight to Yellowstone the second night? I'm planning to follow your one day itinerary for GTNP. I have accomodations for 4 nights right in Yellowstone, then we would drive to Glacier. Right now I have 2 nights in St. Mary's and 2 nights at Cedar Creek. I'm wondering if I could change it to 3 nights instead of 4 or should I keep it at 4 nights because our first day will be spent driving? Your advice is invaluable! Thank you!

Hi Diane, sounds like an amazing trip you have planned! For where to stay after visiting Grand Teton, ideally, you would stay around Moran - we have suggestions and links in our article. See the 'Best places to stay for exploring Grand Teton National Park' section almost at the end. However, accommodation there is very limited, so if you don't find a place to stay, you'd have to either return to Jackson or continue to Yellowstone for that night. The rest of your question isn't very clear to me - are you wondering if you need 4 nights in Yellowstone or whether you should change your 4 nights (2+2) to 3 in Glacier NP? I guess this all depends on your flights (if you are flying) and also on what you are planning to see and do. In Yellowstone, having 4 nights means that you'd have just 3 full days which is a nice amount of time to see the main things without having to rush everywhere. You'll definitely not get bored. Then, the drive between Yellowstone and Glacier NP will take you the whole day, indeed. So you'll be tired and won't be to do much that day anymore. So having 2 nights at St Mary's will just give you one full day there, which I think is worth it. The same with Cedar Creek - the first day, you'll drive through the park to get there and can see a lot of places on your way. But if you want to explore Glacier NP deeper, then I think you'll be glad to have one extra day there as well. So if you can, I think I'd keep your 4 nights in Yellowstone and 4 in Glacier NP. And see if you can find a place in Grand Teton for one night - that would save you some driving. PS Here you can also find our itinerary suggestions for Yellowstone and also itinerary suggestions for Glacier National Park. Have a great trip!

Sunday 27th of December 2020

Your blog has been so helpful so far in helping me plan a trip to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons this May. I was able reserve a campsite for 4 nights at the Madison campground in Yellowstone (5/19-5/23). We are flying into Bozeman and are staying overnight there so we can get to the park early the following morning. What would you recommend as far as an itinerary? I really would like to get into Grand Teton for at least one day. I'm struggling with making the most our time since there is so much to cover!

Thank you so much!

Monday 28th of December 2020

Hi Kassie, glad that you found a campsite and the location is great for exploring Yellowstone. For how to plan your time in Yellowstone, please check our Yellowstone itinerary suggestions. For Grand Teton, I see that the the tour that includes the Jenny Lake boat ride already runs in May, so you can probably do that and maybe even hike up to Inspiration Point. Alternatively, you can just drive the scenic roads in Grand Teton, check out some nice viewpoints, maybe try to see wildlife by going early in the morning. Here are some things you can do in Grand Teton in addition to the Jenny Lake boat and hike: Antelope Flats and the historic barns along Mormon Row. The scenery at Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake, String Lake, and Schwabacher Landing on the east shore of the Snake River. With just 4 nights in Yellowstone, I really wouldn't spend more than 1 day in Grand Teton. You'll need that time in Yellowstone. Hope this helps.
