Being a  full time nomadic travel blogger  since 2012 I have been looking for the best ways to get connected for more than 10 years now. In the past I always used to buy a local prepaid sim card in every country  on arrival, nowadays I pretty much always use e-sim cards to stay connected.

Why buying a sim card for Malaysia?

Life can be pretty challenging these days without a working data connection on your mobile and so is traveling. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, getting directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with your loved ones back home. No need to tell you that traveling to Malaysia is much easier with a local prepaid sim card.

Traveltomtom recommends you to buy a prepaid sim card in Malaysia, because it is easy, cheap and takes only a couple minutes. It is the best way to save on high roaming costs. Also a reminder that public WiFi is often slow and unreliable and it is an UNSECURED network. The use of a VPN is recommended.

Be aware: your phone needs to be UNLOCKED to make sure a local prepaid sim card from Malaysia is working in your phone. This also counts for international prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards for Malaysia.

My recommendation

Based on research and user experience Traveltomtom recommends a Digi prepaid sim card for traveling in Malaysia. For around $10 USD you can already get 30 GB data for 1 month.

You can also buy a lot of unlimited data prepaid sim cards in Malaysia, but they are all on limited data speed of mostly 6 Mbps and therefore not directly recommended.

Digi has truly high speed internet and no data speed cap and therefore Traveltomtom's first recommendation!

Of course does Traveltomtom also recommend e-sim cards and there are some amazing e-sim card deals you can directly order on the internet.

Keep in mind that on arrival in Malaysia, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport or in any phone store tourists can only buy physical prepaid sim cards. E-sim cards are not available for tourists in Malaysia, only on the internet.

The SimOptions e-sim cards for Malaysia are more expensive than the Airalo e-sim cards. But there is another e-sim provider with amazing e-sim card deals for Malaysia.

Before ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia make sure that your phone is e-sim compatible and unlocked.

Mobile internet operators in Malaysia

There are 6 mobile operators in Malaysia and they all offer prepaid sim cards for tourists: 

• Maxis/Hotlink
• Unifi/Bebas

On top of the above mobile internet providers there are also a couple MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) but they are too small to consider as a good prepaid sim card for Malaysia.

Prices for data plans differ slightly per provider but 4G/5G network coverage differs much more significantly. Below I show you the prices and the mobile internet network coverage maps in Malaysia, make a comparison of all the Malaysia sim cards and find you the best one.

Where to buy a sim card for Malaysia

Buying a sim card at kuala lumpur airport.

More time consuming but the easiest way to get connected when arriving in Malaysia is to buy a sim card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Even before passport control you can already buy a Malaysia sim card from either the Hotlink Maxis, Tune Talk or Digi shop. It is impossible to miss when walking up to immigration on your right hand side. When you walk out into the arrivals hall you will immediately stumble upon the prepaid sim card shops on your left hand side: U Mobile, Maxis Hotlink and Tune Talk. On the right hand side there is Bluecube. All prepaid sim card shops at Kuala Lumpur Airport are open 24 hours, but mind you that not all shops take credit card. Tune Talk and Bluecube only accept cash!

You can not buy an e-sim card at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, only physical prepaid sim cards.

If you arrive on one of the other major international airports in Malaysia then there are also kiosks that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists at: Langkawi, Kuching, Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

Phone stores

You can of course also buy a sim card for Malaysia in any random phone store around the country. Traveltomtom advices to buy a sim card from an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers. To find the nearest one to you simply use Google Maps.

In an official mobile internet operator retail store you will get the best service, prices and they make sure that everything works properly before you leave the store and you are connected to the internet.

Buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Malaysia is a little bit of a hassle after a long flight. If you buy a sim card for traveling in Malaysia on the internet you arrive prepared and as soon as the plane lands you are online.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible you can order a physical prepaid sim card for Malaysia via SimOptions . But if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply order an e-sim card for Malaysia on the internet.

Registration process

When buying a prepaid sim card in Malaysia you need to bring your passport. In the shop they will take a copy and register your new prepaid sim card on your name. You will also need to give your fingerprint. 

The purchased prepaid sim cards in Malaysia are activated within minutes. Traveltomtom advices to directly put the new sim card in your phone and see if it works before you leave the store. Also ask your provider how to check your balance and remaining data bundle.

If for some reason you do not wish to register with your passport then looking into  ordering an e-sim card for Malaysia or order an international prepaid sim card for Malaysia . These forms of getting connected when traveling to Malaysia do NOT require identification.

Prices prepaid sim cards in Malaysia

All the below prices and info are up dated as per April 2024. Prices are in Malaysian Ringgit: 10 MYR = $2.1 USD and $1 USD = 4.73 MYR.

Unfortunately there are still no e-sim cards available for tourists. When buying a prepaid sim card on arrival in Malaysia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card.

Maxis - Hotlink

Although Maxis is one of the biggest mobile internet providers in Malaysia, their prepaid service is called Hotlink. They offer the following Malaysia prepaid sim card deals:

• 10 GB data + 2 RM credit for 365 days = 25 RM - $6 USD
• Unlimited data (3Mbps) + calls for 1 month = 40 RM - $9.5 USD
• Unlimited data (6Mbps) + calls for 1 month = 50 RM - $12 USD

Hotlink also offers a tourist sim card which is valid for only 15 days and service will be terminated after the 15 days. It costs 99 RM ($22 USD) and comes with 8 GB data + 10 GB Facebook and 60 minutes calling time (Malaysia, India & China). Check out more info about the Hotlink Tourist Sim Card in this link. Hotlink does only provide physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available for tourists.

The Digi prepaid sim cards are free when you buy one of the following packages that are valid for 30 days and do not have any speed caps:

• 3 GB data + Unlimited Social Media = 15 RM - $3.6 USD
• 15 GB data = 30 RM - $7.1 USD
• 30 GB data + calls = 35 RM - $8.3 USD
• 40 GB data + calls = 45 RM- $9.5 USD

Check out the latest Digi prepaid sim card deals for Malaysia on their website. Digi does only provide physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available for tourists.

A Celcom sim card costs 10 RM ($2.4) and comes with 10 GB Facebook, 1 GB data + 6 RM credit. You can opt on top of that for one of the following data packages:

• Unlimited data (3Mbps) + calls for 7 days = 12 RM - $2.8 USD
• Unlimited data (6Mbps) + calls for 7 days = 15 RM - $3.6 USD
• Unlimited data (3Mbps) + calls for 30 days = 35 RM - $8.3 USD
• Unlimited data (6Mbps) + calls + 5 GB uncapped data for 30 days = 45 RM - $10.7 USD

At U Mobile they offer 3 different prepaid sim card deals for Malaysia:

• Unlimited data (6Mbps) for 30 days = 30 RM - $7.1 USD
• Unlimited data (6Mbps) + calls for 30 days = 35 RM - $8.3 USD

Yes was called Yes 4G, but with the new 5G era coming soon, it is simply Yes Malaysia now. Yes is a fairly new mobile internet provider and their network is much smaller than other providers. However, they offer 3 good prepaid sim card deals:

• 10 GB data for 30 days = 15 RM - $3.6 USD
• 20 GB data for 30 days = 20 RM - $4.7 USD
• Unlimited data for 30 days = 30 RM - $7.1 USD

These plans do not come with any calling minutes. For more info check the Yes Malaysia website . Yes does only provide physical prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards are not available for tourists.

Unifi - Bebas

Another small mobile internet provider is Unifi. Their prepaid data deals are called Bebas and they offer Unlimited data packages:

• Unlimited data for 7 days = 12 RM - $2.8 USD
• Unlimited data for 1 month = 35 RM - $8.3 USD

Best 4G/5G network in Malaysia

Sim card prices are important to determining the best Malaysia sim card, but so is the network coverage. Imagine traveling on long bus rides or staying in the beautiful Perhentian Islands and having no phone signal. Therefore I compared the Malaysia 4G/5G coverage maps  from all mobile internet providers in Malaysia for you.

Is there 5G in Malaysia?

Surprisingly 5G in Malaysia is not as developed as you had wished. Nearby countries Thailand and Singapore offer some of the best 5G coverage in the world, but Malaysia is far behind. As of April 2024 there are some tourist destinations in Malaysia with a 5G signal, but not everywhere and definitely not with every sim card.

Yes 4G/5G coverage map

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Malaysia in 2024.

Traveltomtom comes to the simple conclusion that Yes, Unifi and U Mobile have a lot to catch up when comparing their 4G/5G network strength with Maxis, DiGi and Celcom. Especially when you decide to travel to Borneo it is not recommended to buy a sim card from either Yes, Unifi or U Mobile as their 4G/5G network coverage in Borneo is very limited.

Overall Celcom has the strongest network coverage and therefore Celcom has the best 4G/5G network in Malaysia in 2024. When looking for the best sim card for traveling to Borneo you should either buy a Celcom or a Maxis/Hotlink prepaid sim card.

Best prepaid sim card in Malaysia in 2024

As you have seen prices for data sim cards in Malaysia are very affordable and for $10 USD you can already get unlimited data for the whole month. But be aware that you can buy data packages with different internet speed. Unlimited internet obviously sounds the best, but max data speed is 6 Mbps for example with Celcom, Maxis/Hotlink.

Personally, I would always choose that sim card that does not have a speed cap.

At first it seems like the Celcom, Maxis/Hotlink and the U Mobile prepaid sim cards are great deals with unlimited internet for around $10 - $12 USD but the max speed of 6 Mbps puts me a little off.

Therefore Traveltomtom rates Digi as the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Malaysia as they have no speed caps and truly high speed internet. They also have an amazing deal of 30 GB data for just $8 USD and the Digi 4G/5G network in Malaysia is very extensive.

Traveltomtom does not recommend a Unifi or Yes prepaid sim card for traveling in Malaysia because of their weaker mobile network.

Since prices for prepaid sim cards for tourists are so low there is no point in comparing e-sim cards for Malaysia with local prepaid sim cards.

The e-sim cards for Malaysia that you can order on the internet have the advantage that you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. Which means when the plane lands you are already online. No more visiting a sim card shop and installing a physical prepaid sim card.

How To Plan A Trip To Malaysia: The Ultimate Malaysia Travel Guide!

Do you need to plan your trip to Malaysia? Great! You are in the right place!

In this article, I walk you through exactly how to plan a trip to Malaysia which is perfect for you. I talk about what steps you need to take, how far in advance you should take them as well as break down when the best time is to go to Malaysia, how to get to Malaysia, where to visit, where to stay, how to get around and everything else you could possibly need to know for the perfect break.

I also talk budget and what to pack. Everything you need to know!

Because the good news is that it is quite easy to plan a trip to Malaysia by yourself with the information in this article, on this site and with some help of some online booking engines.

We travel to Malaysia multiple times a year and have also lived there. We always arrange everything ourselves – it’s easy, fun and the most cost-effective option. Although if you would rather do a tour to save any hassle then I also have suggestions for that below too!

How To Plan A Trip To Malaysia

The first step in how to plan Malaysia trip is to work out when exactly you will go. If you have set dates, you can skip the next section. Otherwise, I’ll help you decide when to go.

Then I will give you a list of what to book, when and you can read each further section below as you work through your planning list.

Malaysia Map

But before we start going through everything, here is a Malaysia map. If you aren’t familiar with the geography of Malaysia, you can quickly and easily see where all the places are that we talk about below.

Basically, there are two parts of Malaysia – peninsular Malaysia which is attached to Asia and is where you will find the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and popular destinations like Langkawi and Penang.

Then there is Borneo or East Malaysia which is a big island a couple of hours flight from Kuala Lumpur. This island is also shared with the countries of Brunei and Indonesia.

When To Go To Malaysia

The good news is that it’s never a bad time to go to Malaysia! It’s always a good time of year somewhere.

One of the major destinations in Malaysia, the capital Kuala Lumpur, does not vary much year round. Singapore is close to the equator and does not vary much either if you plan to add that to your Malaysia trip.

Most other areas have a more distinct monsoon/rainy season and a dry season. It is best to visit in the dry season which is November – March on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia (which includes Penang and Langkawi) and April – October on the east coast (which includes Perhentian Islands and Redang Island) and in Borneo.

On the west coast, it does not matter too much and rainy periods do not tend to last long or cause too many problems. On the east coast, however, it is a different story and many of the islands basically shut down in the monsoon period so it is best to avoid this area then.

Other things to take into account are school holiday periods in Malaysia and Singapore. These fall from mid November to the start of January and there are shorter periods in March, May/June and July/August. See the latest ones here .

Finally, “the haze” is a problem that occurs annually around June – November thanks to pollution from fires in Indonesia. The affect of this is variable – sometimes it is minor and won’t affect your travel. Other times, the pollution can be quite bad especially in areas like Singapore and Malaysia.

Peak tourist times are December, January and Chinese New Years. Expect things to fill up quicker and be pricier at these times so it’s especially important to book ahead.

Travel Booking List And Countdown

Malaysia does not tend to get booked out completely but there are definitely times when it pays to book in advance which is mainly in the peak tourist season in December and January. If you are visiting for an event or festival, like Chinese New Years, it is also important to book in advance.

However, you are generally best off booking flights and accommodation 6 – 12 months in advance for the best deals. There can be a big cost saving on flights particularly when they are booked far in advance especially if you want to go in the peak tourist time or school holidays.

6-12 months in advance:

• Book international flights
• Get travel insurance
• Plan itinerary
• Book any domestic flights
• Consider booking accommodation and any tour packages

3 – 6 months in advance:

• Book accommodation if not booked yet including overnight tours ( like these )
• Work out how you will get around Malaysia, book car hire if necessary and any remaining domestic flights

1 month in advance:

• Get visa if necessary
• Work out how you will access money
• Book attractions and tours
• Book bus tickets
• Book airport transfers or plan how you will get to your hotels
• Work out sim card for phone
• Make sure you print out or have easy access on your phone to all bookings

1-2 days in advance:

• Fill in the online form for your digital arrival card. All foreign travellers must do this up to 3 days before arrival.

How To Travel To Malaysia

Unless you are from or visiting a neighbouring country, you are most likely flying into Malaysia. Thankfully, this is usually quite easy with Kuala Lumpur being a major hub. There are also international airports in other parts of the country like Langkawi and Penang but options are usually limited and this tends to only work if you are flying from a neighbouring country.

Even if you are coming from nearby, like Thailand, flight deals can be very good so it can be worth flying over the extra hassle of overland transport.

Best Flight Deals To Malaysia

To find the best flight deals to Malaysia, I recommend using  Skyscanner  or  CheapOair  which will give you a good comparison of all available options.

Skyscanner is particularly good for searching for the cheapest days to fly and you can also set up price alerts so it will email you if the price changes.  Click here to give it a go.

CheapOair is a better choice if you are looking for business or first class flights. Click here to do a search.

There are two major airlines based in Malaysia: AirAsia (budget airline) and Malaysia Airlines  and these can be convenient options especially if you want to connect to a domestic Malaysia flight. However, many great airlines fly to Malaysia and it’s not necessary to travel one of the local airlines.

I highly recommend you listen to my podcast episode here where I walk you through how to get the best flight deals as well as many things to consider when flying to this part of the world.

It can often be cheaper to book flights to Kuala Lumpur separate to any domestic flights.

It’s also worth considering flying into Singapore instead especially if you want to visit Johor Bahru or Tioman Island. Flights to Singapore can be cheaper and there can be more options too.

If you want to visit Singapore on your trip as well as Malaysia , this is particularly a good option but there are also many flights from Singapore to different locations in Malaysia and it’s easy to go straight from the airport across to Johor Bahru in Malaysia as well.

If you have plenty of time before you plan to travel, are flexible with dates and live in Asia or Australia, then signing up for the  AirAsia newsletter  is a great idea. There can be some great sale fares but you do need to be ready to book the second they come out as they usually sell out fast.

If you are in a neighbouring country, it’s also easy to travel overland into Malaysia.

There are buses, trains and boats between Malaysia and Thailand. The most frequent and often easiest option is by bus.

Hat Yai, in southern Thailand, is a common point to get buses into Malaysia (and they leave frequently) although there are many places from which you can travel to Malaysia.

It’s also possible to get a train into Malaysia. You will first need to catch a train in Thailand to the border with Malaysia at Padang Besar. From here, you can catch a second train to Alor Setar (for Langkawi), Butterworth (for Penang) or all the way to Kuala Lumpur.

You can also take a ferry, There are regular fast ferries between Satun in Thailand and Langkawi ( find times and ticket prices here ). In high season, there can be boats operating to Koh Lipe in Thailand from Langkawi as well ( timetables here ).

It’s very easy to travel between Singapore and Johor Bahru in Malaysia with frequent buses to many places in the country.

It’s also possible and very easy to take taxis between the two countries which is what I do and recommend. You can book a taxi here and be picked up at your hotel or airport and taken anywhere in Malaysia.

There is also a train from the Woodlands Train Checkpoint across to Johor Bahru although a bus or taxi is more convenient.

It’s possible to take ferries between Indonesia and Malaysia. If you are in Kalimantan (the Indonesia part of Borneo) then it’s also possible to bus to Malaysia from Pontianak ( timetable and prices here ).

Most ferries depart from Sumatra in Indonesia and arrive in Melaka and Penang. There are also ferries from the islands of Bintan and Batam to Johor Bahru or Tarakan in Kalimantan to Tawau in Sabah, Borneo.

Brunei is surrounded by Malaysia in Borneo and it’s easy to travel between the two. There are buses or you can take a ferry from Brunei to Pulau Labuan which is a Malaysian island just off the coast of Borneo.

Passports And Visas

If you are from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA or the EU you do not need a visa at time of publishing. Many other nationals do not need visas either for stays for up to 90 days. However, it is best to always check this for yourself.

Your passport does need 6 months validity at the time you enter so get a new passport before you go if this is an issue.

You also need to fill in an online form here up to 3 days before entering the country. You can’t do it any earlier and all foreign travellers need to do this.

This is a new requirement that came into effect on 1 December 2023. It will give you a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC).

When entering, if you talk to an official and you plan to stay in the country for more than 30 days, ask for 90 days entry. Sometimes, they will give you less than the allowed 90 days if you do not ask.

When travelling to Sabah and Sarawak (which are Borneo), your passports will be inspected again.

Money In Malaysia

The Malaysian currency is called the ringgit (RM) and there are many ATMs around which is the best (and usually cheapest) way to get cash. You will need to carry around this currency as it’s rare for anything else to be accepted. You can use credit cards at many places as well.

Note that your card from home can have some killer fees when it comes to using it overseas.

I highly recommend you consider getting a Wise multi-currency account. It’s free and makes it super easy and cheap for you to exchange your currency for ringgit or other currencies when you travel. You can use the card at ATMs as well.

Where To Go And Malaysia Itineraries

The hardest part of how to plan a trip to Singapore and Malaysia is likely to be working out where you can go. There are many great options!

The most popular places are:

• Kuala Lumpur  – the capital and largest city with many attractions and things to do
• Penang – an island with an interesting history, UNESCO listed old town, beaches and great food
• Langkawi – a popular island for beaches and relaxing with the best resorts in the country and some good attractions
• Johor Bahru – a popular starting point from Singapore especially for families as it’s home to Legoland Malaysia
• Melaka – close to Kuala Lumpur, this is a great destination to learn more about the mixed history of Malaysia
• Cameron Highlands – cool down in the highlands with beautiful views, tea plantations and many farms and low key attractions
• Tioman Island – a popular beach and diving destination from Singapore
• Perhentian Islands – some beautiful beaches and good diving off the east coast of Malaysia
• Sabah – this fantastic state in Borneo is full of amazing wildlife and natural attractions
• Kuching – the capital of Sarawak in Borneo, there are many amazing day trips to enjoy cultural, natural and wildlife attractions from this pretty, riverside city
• Singapore  – yes this is its own country and not in Malaysia, but combining a trip to Malaysia with Singapore is a popular option and worth considering

There are also many other fabulous places to visit in Malaysia which I recommend you consider if you have more than two weeks. However, if it’s your first trip and you have up to two weeks, these places are your best bet.

As a general rule, I recommend 3 days per place minimum. You can adjust this based on whether you are someone who likes to take it easy when you travel or like to go quick and see as much as possible.

If you are looking for some destinations to add to your travel planner Malaysia which are slightly less popular, consider making the journey to Borneo and exploring the states of Sabah and Sarawak and perhaps adding Brunei . I only recommend this if you have at least a week available and I would only visit one state with just a week.

Some other destinations in peninsular Malaysia worth considering are:

• Ipoh – known for its street art and amazingly good food
• Redang Island  – beautiful beaches and some solid resort options on the east coast if you would like something less popular than Tioman and the Perhentians
• Port Dickson – if you don’t have long in Malaysia and want a beach destination convenient to Kuala Lumpur

Recommended Group Tours In Malaysia

If you would rather just enjoy your holiday while not worrying about the details, a group tour is an excellent option. Here are some recommend options…

The groups tend to be small with a maximum of 15 travellers making it easier to visit places and keep things local.

A great alternative to group tours and booking accommodation and attractions separately is to purchase customised tour packages.

In fact, some attractions in Malaysia you can only visit this way. Some attractions and activities also limit numbers (like Turtle Island in Sabah) so booking a tour this way is the only way to experience.

Accommodation In Malaysia

One of the reasons we love Malaysia is because of the huge range of accommodation available for all budgets and what great value it is. This is somewhere where you can find a 4-star over water chalet for under $100 a night!

Budget hotels abound and there are hostels for people on low budgets. Cheap hotels tend to still be clean and a reasonable standard, just basic.

Midrange options are excellent and this is somewhere I recommend you aim to pay for at least this if you can. Often you can find solid midrange options for around $50.

Finally, on the upper end, there are some truly amazing resorts and hotels which can be incredibly good value. The best options are in the most visited places of Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Kuching and Port Dickson. If you go to less busy places, there can be a lack of really great accommodation so if 5 star resorts with great service are important to you then the places just mentioned are your best bet.

Note that Malaysia has a tourism tax for foreigners of RM10 per night. From the 1 January 2023, you may need to pay this when you check in to your hotel if you didn’t pay when booking.

Best Accommodation Booking Sites

I highly recommend  Agoda  for booking accommodation in Malaysia.

It usually has the best price and has a rewards scheme where you quickly gain credit to use towards your next booking. In fact, if you pay upfront, often you get the credit straight away so you can use it for your next hotel booking.

Agoda also has a great range of accommodation in Malaysia including private home and apartment rental.

Note that there is a tourist tax of RM10 a night which is often not added to your hotel cost until you arrive at the hotel. This is not a scam and needs to be paid.

How To Get Around Malaysia

There are a few options for getting around Malaysia. All are quite easy!

Buses in Malaysia go most places and can be great quality between cities and towns. They are usually quite quick and are easy to book online or on arrival. Booking before you go can help you save time when you are there and ensure you get a bus at the perfect time.

However note that if you don’t see any buses scheduled on your dates that you may be looking too early. They often only appear 1 – 3 months before the travel date. Looking at closer dates can help give you a good idea of when they may run on your travel dates.

Train is also a good option although it is more limited than bus in both routes and frequency. Trains can be tough to work in to your schedule if you have limited time.

The main routes are from:

• Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur (switching trains at Gemas)
• Johor Bahru to Tumpat. This is also known as the jungle line and takes you through the middle and up the east coast of Malaysia
• Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth (for Penang)

Buses can be more comfortable and luxurious and I recommend them over the trains unless you are a train lover.

3. Shared Taxi

Shared taxis are also an option over longer distances. You pay for your seat and they leave when they are full. I prefer buses as they can be more comfortable but a shared taxi can be faster if you don’t wait too long for them to fill up.

4. Private Taxi

It’s possible to hire private taxis to take you anywhere in Malaysia. This is generally more expensive than the other options on this list but it depends how many people you have. This can be a great option for families.

The good news is that for foreigners, private taxis between towns and cities can be very affordable.

You can simply take a shared taxi and buy all seats or arrange one beforehand.

5. Car hire

Car hire is a fun and easy way to explore the country. We find driving in Malaysia quite easy and it is our preferred option along with private taxi . It can be cost effective for families or bigger groups and it also gives you more freedom.

If you plan on visiting an island in Malaysia, you will probably need to take a ferry. These tend to run frequently to popular choices and be easy and good value.

You can find ferry timetables and book tickets for many popular routes here.

Finally, flying is a great option within Malaysia. Domestic flights can be as cheap as a few dollars during sales but even outside of sale periods, they tend to be a bargain.

Flights are especially a good idea for covering a larger distance and when you are short on time. So, for example, if you are visiting Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur, I would definitely fly. Or maybe, you are visiting Penang and Kuala Lumpur and a few places along the way. Going overland one way and then flying the other could make sense.

It’s also necessary to fly if you want to travel from peninsular Malaysia to Borneo. This is the only way to make this journey. Flights tend to be a great deal between these points as well and you can fly to Borneo from a few points in Malaysia like Johor Bahru, Penang and Langkawi so you don’t necessarily have to go via Kuala Lumpur.

Attractions And Tickets

While the only attraction you need to book in advance is the  Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur , many attractions in Malaysia have much cheaper prices if you book them in advance on  Klook .

Klook is a trustworthy site we use all the time for attractions, tours and activities as it has the best prices and is always very easy to use.

I highly recommend that once you have your itinerary, you go through Klook and book tickets for any attractions you want to visit, particularly big ones like  Legoland Malaysia  or  Sunway Lagoon .

Airport Transfers And Arrival

Arriving in Malaysia is straightforward but it can be daunting the first time, especially if you have a long flight.

You can read  our guide here  about getting from KL Airport to KL Sentral in the city centre.

On arrival at either terminal in Kuala Lumpur, you can follow signs to get to transportation hubs and buy a coupon for a taxi to your hotel. You can also use the Grab app to book yourself a taxi. It works the same as Uber.

However, if you would like to just arrive and not think at all, I recommend booking a transfer in advance, especially if you have a long journey to get to Malaysia. Here are some options:

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is invaluable. You just never know what will happen!

A few years ago, I broke my leg getting into the shower in Thailand. Doctor and hospital visits, tests then needing to cut our trip short and get a direct flight home added up and it was great to have travel insurance take care of it all – especially when they even paid for me to get home in business class and I was able to talk to an Australian doctor about what was going on.

In my opinion, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

I recommend buying travel insurance as soon as you book your flights as they will start covering you for some problems from that point.

Malaysia Travel Costs

Malaysia can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. The best part is that Malaysia is very good value, so while it may not be as cheap as some nearby countries, you do tend to get more for your money.

Some sample budgets for two people:

Budget travellers: RM200 a day

Mid-range travellers: RM300-600

High-end travellers: RM700+

Of course, budgets will vary due to many factors like how often you move around, how many places you want to visit, how much you like to drink alcohol (relatively expensive) and much more. These are rough estimates only to help you plan.

It’s also worth noting that you can get incredible food for cheap so there really is no need to spend a lot on that as long as you are happy eating the local cuisines.

What To Pack

The good news is that Malaysia is basically always hot and humid – so you can leave all the heavy sweaters and coats at home!

However, this doesn’t mean you should just pack shorts and tank tops.

It’s important to always be respectful to local culture when it comes to how to dress and beach attire is definitely best suited to the beach or your resort. Malaysia is majority Muslim and local people tend to cover up.

You do not need to keep covered but it is a good idea to keep your shoulders covered and, in more conservative areas on the east coast, I recommend covering your knees too. Lightweight, light coloured clothing is the best.

You can buy anything you need in Malaysia very easily and we often buy our toiletries when we get there because they are cheaper than at home! The one exception to this is sunscreen – it’s expensive. We even had my mum bring it over for us when we were living in Malaysia!

Other essential items:

• Umbrella or rain coat – rain can be sudden and heavy
• Good walking shoes that have good grip on wet surfaces. Preferably sandal style
• Scarf or sarong to cover up when going in mosques and some temples
• Plug Adapter – Malaysia uses a UK plug
• Power cube – so you can charge all your electronics in one place

Internet And Phone Coverage

Many accommodation providers and some restaurants will have wifi for keeping in touch with home. However, we always buy a local sim card so we don’t have to worry and because they are so cheap and easy.

You can get one at the airport in minutes and  even buy one beforehand here.

Other Things To Consider

• While the majority of Malaysia has a Monday to Friday working week, some states follow a Sunday to Thursday working week. This occurs in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu. There are usually still shops open but if you want to visit attractions like museums on a Friday, check they are open before you go.
• As mentioned above, there is a tourist tax on accommodation which is currently RM10 per night. This is paid at the hotel.
• Alcohol can be relatively expensive in Malaysia. If you are coming from a western country, it is unlikely to be so bad but it will seem expensive if you are coming from a neighbouring country like Thailand. It is also not that readily available thanks to the Muslim culture. Langkawi and Tioman Island have duty free status and alcohol is much cheaper.
• Ramadan is a period of fasting for Muslim people where they don’t eat during daylight hours. However, it is usually not hard for visitors to find somewhere to eat thanks to the sizeable Chinese and Indian communities who do not observe Ramadan. Those restaurants will generally still have normal opening hours.
• Foreigners pay more for many attractions in Malaysia. You will notice a “MyKad” price and a regular price. MyKad is just for Malaysians. It’s just how it is.

• Download the Grab app before you go. This is just like uber and is generally the cheapest and easiest way to get taxis within a city/town/area. You can’t fully set it up until you arrive in the country though.

Malaysia With Kids

Our final section in this guide to plan a trip to Malaysia & Singapore is about travelling in Malaysia with kids. If you don’t have any kids, you can skip this and you are done! Feel free to ask any questions in our Malaysia travel Facebook group.

However, if you have kids, I want to put your mind at ease. We travel to Malaysia frequently with our three kids and have travelled here with a newborn and toddlers. In fact, I spent the first half of my last pregnancy in Malaysia so my third child was somewhat made in Malaysia.

This is a great destination with kids. We just love it!

Malaysians love kids. We always feel very welcome everywhere with our kids and they get lots of positive attention when they were little. This helps put all of us at ease which leads to much better behavior.

Many restaurants are outdoors which I find works great with kids and kids will love all the natural attractions as well as the big attractions like Legoland Malaysia , Sunway Lagoon , KidZania KL , Escape Penang and KL Bird Park  (and so will you!).

There are usually discounts on everything for kids with the youngest kids being free.

Many of the resorts in places like Langkawi and Penang offer kids club so you can get some quality adult time while your kids have a ball with new friends.

• Sandakan – Another great place in Borneo to base yourself for fabulous kid-friendly wildlife experiences like Sepilok Rehabilitation Orangutan Centre , Labuk Bay , Kinabatangan River , Turtle Island and more.

The 7 Day Malaysia Travel Itinerary

Surrounded by beautiful beaches, lush greenery, high-towering skyscrapers and bustling metropolitan life, Malaysia is a wonderful multicultural paradise for all kind of travellers. Although many travellers treat Malaysia (and Singapore) as hop-over or pass-through countries for their south-east travel, Malaysia actually has a lot more to offer. Here’s our guide to planning your 7 days trip to Malaysia, including the Best Tours in Malaysia , so as to experience the best of everything! 

There actually are two different regions in Malaysia – Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Malaysian Borneo including Sabah ). In this travel itinerary, we have covered Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands and Langkawi. The best time to visit Malaysia is between March to October. Since Malaysia is a tropical country, the temperature and humidity are high all year round. 

Reaching Malaysia is very easy too. There are direct flights to Kuala Lumpur from all major international airport around the globe and the flight-frequency is particularly high if you are travelling from an Asian country. Malaysia also has relative easy rules for travel-visa. A vast majority of the country can avail visa-on-arrival and for others, travel visa to Malaysia can be obtained online, without any hassle.

Day 2 – kl tower | bukit bintang | jalan alor food street, day 3 – putrajaya | kl china town | kl bird park, best hotels in cameron highlands, best hotels in ipoh, best hotels in langkawi, share this:, day 1 – kuala lumpur.

Just like most other Malaysian trips, ours too started from the capital city Kuala Lumpur, which is one of the Best Places to Visit in Malaysia . This skyscraper-filled metropolitan is not just about the Twin Towers. KL has many more amazing places and offers a plethora of pleasing experiences.

We started our first day by are heading straight to Batu Caves temple by cab. Although KL public transport is fantastic, a taxi or ‘grab’ makes life easier (trains are available and it takes 30 mins from KL Sentral). Batu Caves temple bears a gigantic golden statue of Murugan Swami at the gate. Also, these 140 feet (42.67m) tall statue is adorned with 270+ steps, which leads to the cave’s entrance. Be careful of the cheeky monkeys around you and it actually better not to feed them. 

There is no entry fee and you are free to explore the depths of this cave, as is an internal structure is comfortable, and shrines are lined up with rocky walls. 

Pro tip – Try to visit Batu caves early in the morning so as to get a free-from-crowd and Instagram-worthy photo of the colourful stairway!

Another advantage of starting the day early is you can also visit the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Center , only 90 km from Batu caves. Kuala Gandah is a tranquil Elephant sanctuary that allows visitors to come into close contact with one of the world’s most majestic creatures. You can see the Elephants taking bath in the wild and also feed them with your own hands. 

Also, the road trip from Batu caves to the Elephant sanctuary is full of lush greenery, postcard-perfect landscape with village homes and locals selling fruits by the highway. 

After a pleasant time at Batu Caves and Kuala Gandah, we returned back to KL city, because how can Day-1 be over without the icon of Malaysia. In the evening, it was time for the capital city’s most famous attraction – the iconic Petronas Towers !

These silver skyscrapers are 88 – storey tall and connected with a Skybridge on 41st and 42nd Floors, the observation deck is on the 86th floor. Since we had already bought the “skip the queue” tickets in advance (highly advisable), we didn’t have to wait long.

Pro-tip: Try to time your observation deck visit just before sunset, so that you can get the ‘light-view’ and ‘night-view’ both!

On the base of this stunning commercial place, there is a Suria KLCC, and Petronas Philharmonic Concert Hall. Also, don’t miss the musical fountain (once every 30mins) right in front of KLCC’s main entrance. 

Dinner near Petronas Tower can be checked out at best-rated KL restaurants at Petronas towers. The popular one’s Little Penang Café, Lai Ho peen, Madam Kwans.  If you are small budgeter, enjoy the Food trucks present in open space. They have the best of international dishes with superb variety.  You will also find the Petrosains Museum and Kuala Lumpur Aquarium, Kids Water Park, and it’s free for all.

On the 2nd day, it’s time for the KL Tower and the area surrounding it. KL Tower is another tourist attraction which specifically, is a communications tower.  This is 7th tallest freestanding tower, which has a high-speed elevator to take visitors from the base to top. The observation deck offers a 360-degree view of KL city and also has a revolving restaurant. At the base, there is an Upside-Down House, forest park, F1 experience and a mini-zoo. 

KL Forest Eco-park , a great family-friendly destination, is few meters from KL tower. There is 100-yr old Jelutong Tree standing alongside the tower which actually in Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve. It is a natural rainforest, that too right in the centre of the city. Rather than taking every trail, I would recommend taking a Canopy Walk that allows you to enjoy the experience from the treetops. 

Next on our list was the Bukit Bintang district. This is the heart of KL city , where you will see malls everywhere. Here, you can shop for souvenirs, trinkets, and ever-changing fashionable clothing, electronics and accessories.  All the shelves are stuffed with international brands and knockoffs too!! This is a haven for the shopaholics!!.  Check out Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Lot 10, Sungei Wang Plaza, Starhill Gallery, Berjaya Times square. 

Towards to end of Day-2, we headed to Jalan Alor Food Street – must-visit for a complete KL experience. This street is the hub of street food in KL .  Here, you can try dimsums, grilled skewers and handcrafted famous fried-ice-creams, which are some of the Best Things to Eat in Malaysia . BBQ chicken and satay sticks are too good at Wong Ah Wah , is a famous eatery on this street.

On the third day in KL, we visited the spectacular Blue Mosque and Putrajaya – the administrative office town of Malaysia. But both these places are outside KL and if you are not keen on going out of KL, below are some of the options to visit in KL itself.

KL China town is one of the most exciting and no one is going to hassle you. Petaling Street is a well-known bargaining place with colourful markets, impressive bars around, sophisticated cocktail joints and best backpacker hotspots –The Berlin KL. Both, day as well as night walking tours are entertaining. 

Amongst the 5 most popular gardens, Asean Sculpture Garden features numerous sculptures and it is a peaceful place surrounded by botanical gardens. Butterfly Park Garden is a beautiful home to more than 5000 species of butterflies. Entrance fees are applicable.  

KL Bird Park is a world full of spectacular birds and a tropical paradise not to be missed by all. It is also the world’s largest covered bird park. 

Brickfields and Little India is also a must-visit district, which is the centre of colonial architecture, harmonious multicultural communities. Little India is an “another world” homely place for Indians, where you can browse around Indian restaurants, textile shops, dancing and singing with Indian Bollywood music. 

Pro-Tip: For hiring a cab in KL, we highly recommend that you download the Grab App . We noticed that it was more frequent and less price as compared to Uber.

Day 4 – Cameron Highlands

After completely enjoying KL, we took a bus from KL Central and headed to Cameron Highlands.

Cameron Highlands is of the most favoured places to visit in Malaysia. We started our day early at BOH plantations, for hiking among greenery and watching tea leaves picking activity is one the most favourite experiences in the entire trip. This is the largest producer of flowers and Tea in Malaysia. 

Cameron Valley Tea House 1 and 2 are beautiful locations where you can enjoy a yummy lunch, with panoramic views of the tea plantation s. We preferred Tea House 1 because it has a lovely waterfall, only a 5-10 minute walk up the hill.

Day 5 – Cameron

A beautiful way to start your 2nd day in the hill of Cameron is Time Tunnel Museum. It is the first memorabilia museum in Malaysia. Here you can check out over 4000 items on display about the way of life in Malaysia during the pre-War years, many historical photographs, and relive childhood memories. 

Cameron highlands also offer many strawberry farms and flower gardens for a leisurely evening stroll.

Additionally, Ipoh is just an hour’s drive from Cameron highlands. Ipoh is another unique place, especially for its streets filled with spectacular wall art.

Day 6 and Day 7 – Langkawi

The last 2 days of our Malaysia trip was spent on the pristine islands of Langkawi. For us, Langkawi was love at first sight – primarily because of the view from the flight-window. Although being an archipelago of small islands, there are plenty of interesting places to visit and things to do in Langkawi .

We started our first day in Langkawi by visiting its most famous icon – the Sky Bridge and Sky Cab. Langkawi Sky Bridge is a cable-stayed 125-metre long curved walking bridge in Malaysia which is 2170 feet above sea-level. For me, the best part of the entire experience was the cable-car-ride – Sky Cab. It is by far the most exciting cable-car-ride I have ever done!

Pro-tip : If you are going during peak season, you can buy tickets in advance to avoid long queues .

After enjoying the spectacular panoramic views from the Sky Bridge, you can come down to experience many more interesting SkyGliding things at the base. Attractions like SkyRex (ride simulations), SkyDome (360 degrees 3D image projection theatre) and 3D Art Gallery will definitely fill you will excitement. 

While returning, don’t forget to visit the beautiful black-sand beach, which is only a few kilometres from Sky Bridge.

On the second day in Langkawi, take the Langkawi Mangrove tour – a speed boat ride through the Kilim Geoforest Park. The speed boat ride (usually 3 hours), which is one of the Best Tours in Malaysia , will take you through the different mangrove islands of Langkawi. A major attraction of this boat ride is watching eagles hunt for fishes – it is a sight like no other.

And, then the last afternoon and evening of your wonderful Malaysia trip can be spent at the beautiful Pantai Cenang Beach and also shopping around anywhere on Langkawi.

Pro-Tip: T he entire island of Langkawi is duty-free shopping! So, we recommend you can save all your shopping for Langkawi!

Using Dual SIM with an eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to use a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM. Learn how to set up and use Dual SIM. 1

How can you use Dual SIM?

Use one number for business and another number for personal calls.

Add a local data plan when you travel outside of the country or region.

Have separate voice and data plans.

Both your phone numbers can make and receive voice and FaceTime calls and send and receive messages using iMessage, SMS, and MMS. 2 Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.

If you want to use 5G with Dual SIM on iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max, make sure that you have iOS 14.5 or later .

What you need

An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 12.1 or later

A wireless carrier that supports eSIM

To use two different carriers, your iPhone must be unlocked . Otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier. If a CDMA carrier provides your first SIM, your second SIM won't support CDMA. Contact your carrier for more information.

If you have an enterprise or corporate cellular service plan, check with your company administrator to see if they support this feature.

All iPhone models that support eSIM can have multiple eSIMs and use Dual SIM with two active SIMs at the same time.

You can use Dual SIM by using a physical SIM and an eSIM. iPhone 13 models and later also support two active eSIMs. iPhone models without a physical SIM tray support two active eSIMs.

Label your plans

After your second plan is activated, label your plans. For example, you can label one plan Business and the other plan Personal.

You'll use these labels when you choose which phone number to use for making or receiving calls and messages, to designate a number for cellular data, and to assign a number to your contacts so you know which number you will use.

If you change your mind later, you can change your labels by going to Settings, tapping either Cellular or Mobile Data, and then tapping the number whose label you want to change. Then tap Cellular Plan Label and select a new label or enter a custom label.

Set your default number

Choose a number to use when you call or send a message to someone who isn't in your Contacts app. Choose which cellular plans you want to use for iMessage and FaceTime. You can choose either or both numbers.

On this screen, choose a number to be your default, or you can choose which number is to be used only for cellular data. Your other number will be your default. If you want your iPhone to use cellular data from both plans, depending on coverage and availability, turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching.

Use two phone numbers for calls, messages, and data

Now that your iPhone is set up with two phone numbers, here's how to use them.

Let your iPhone remember which number to use

When you call one of your contacts, you don't need to choose which number to use every time. By default, your iPhone uses the same number that you used the last time you called that contact. If you haven't called that contact, your iPhone uses your default number. You can also specify which number to use for your calls with a contact. Follow these steps:

Tap the contact.

Tap Preferred Cellular Plan.

Tap the number you want to use with that contact.

Make and receive calls

You can make and receive phone calls with either phone number.

When you're on a call, if the carrier for your other phone number supports Wi-Fi calling, you can answer incoming calls on your other number. When you're on a call using a line that isn't your designated line for cellular data, you need to turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching to receive calls from your other line. If you ignore the call and you have voicemail set up with your carrier, you’ll get a missed-call notification and the call will go to voicemail. Check with your carrier for Wi-Fi calling availability and find out whether additional fees or data usage applies from your data provider.

If you're on a call and your other line shows No Service, either your carrier doesn't support Wi-Fi calling or you don't have Wi-Fi calling turned on. 3 It could also mean Allow Cellular Data Switching is not turned on. When you're on a call, an incoming call on your other phone number will go to voicemail if you set up voicemail with your carrier. 4 However, you won't get a missed-call notification from your secondary number. Call Waiting works for incoming calls on the same phone number. To avoid missing an important call, you can turn on call forwarding and forward all calls from one number to the other. Check with your carrier for availability and to find out whether additional fees apply.

Switch phone numbers for a call

You can switch phone numbers before you make a call. If you're calling someone in your Favorites list, follow these steps:

Tap the current phone number.

Tap your other number.

If you're using the keypad, follow these steps:

Enter the phone number.

Tap the phone number, near the top of the screen.

Tap the number you want to use.

Send messages with iMessage and SMS/MMS

You can use iMessage or SMS/MMS to send messages with either phone number. 5 You can choose a number to use before or after you start a conversation. Here's how.

Choose a number before you send an iMessage or SMS/MMS message

Open Messages.

Tap the New button, in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Enter your contact's name.

Switch numbers during a conversation

Tap the number you're using, near the top of the screen.

Choose the number you want to use instead.

The icons in the status bar at the top of the screen show the signal strength of your two carriers. Learn what the status icons mean .

You can see more status icons when you open Control Center .

When Carrier 1 is in use, the other line will show No Service.

The status bar shows that the device is connected to Wi-Fi and Carrier 2 is using Wi-Fi Calling.

With Allow Cellular Data Switching turned on, the status bar shows that Carrier 1 is using 5G, and Carrier 2 is using the cellular data of Carrier 1 and has Wi-Fi calling enabled.

One number at a time can use cellular data. To change which number uses cellular data, follow these steps:

Go to Settings.

Tap either Cellular or Mobile Data.

Tap Cellular Data.

Tap the number you want to use cellular data.

If you turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching, then while you're on a voice call on your voice-only number, that number automatically switches to use voice and data. 6 This lets you use both voice and data while on the call.

If you turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching and you're active on a voice number that isn't your designated cellular-data number, then cellular data won't work while you're on the call.

To turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching, follow these steps:

Tap Mobile Data.

Turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching.

To change your cellular settings for each of your plans, follow these steps:

Tap the number you want to change.

Tap each option and set it as you normally would.

Use Dual SIM with an eSIM and your Apple Watch .

If you can't set up your eSIM or if you have trouble using your eSIM, learn what to do .

eSIM on iPhone is not offered in China mainland. In Hong Kong and Macao, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), and iPhone XS feature eSIM. Learn about using Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards in China mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao .

This uses Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology, which means that both SIMs can make and receive calls.

Or if you're using iOS 12, update to iOS 13 or later to receive calls when you're using your other number.

4. If data roaming is on for the number that uses cellular data, then Visual Voicemail and MMS will be disabled on your voice-only number.

Additional fees might apply. Check with your carrier.

Your data line switches automatically for the duration of your call. This cellular-data switching won't work if you're currently using Data Roaming. Check with your carrier for availability and to find out if additional fees apply.

Travel could be a good deal this summer. Here's when plane ticket prices will peak.

Spring is springing, and according to Hopper, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation plans.

New data from the online booking site shows some favorable trends for travelers in the next few months, including slightly lower airfares compared with 2023 and hotel and car rental prices that are more or less flat year-over-year.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to book, whether you’re looking for a domestic getaway or go on an overseas adventure. It’s also not too late to take advantage of deals on some last-minute trips.

How much are spring and summer plane tickets?

According to Hopper, the best deals right now are on domestic airline tickets. Round-trip flights within the U.S. are averaging $290 in April, but prices are expected to rise in the months ahead.

Hopper’s data shows prices for domestic flights will peak between May and June at $315 on average, then will gradually fall through the summer, reaching a low of $264 on average in September.

On a call with investors discussing first-quarter earnings Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said summer travel demand has been pushed forward in recent years in part because schools, especially in the South, are finishing their summer breaks earlier in the year.

This summer also will be a good time to travel internationally; Hopper data shows fares to most destinations abroad are down compared with last year. 

“Airfare to international destinations continues to improve following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints. Airfare to most major regions of the world has dropped compared to last year with the exception of trips to Canada,” Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist, said in the report. “International fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels to most regions, as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions.”

How much will a hotel room for the spring and summer cost?

Hotel prices remain mostly flat compared with the same time last year. Rooms in the U.S. are averaging $206 a night; better deals are available in some trending international destinations like Osaka, Japan, and Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Hopper, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago remain popular destinations in the U.S.

Will car rental prices rise this summer?

Car rental prices also haven’t increased much since last year and average $42 a day, according to Hopper.

The report shows most travelers rent a car for about four days, and warm-weather destinations like Orlando and Los Angeles remain popular pickup points.

MDOT launching public survey to collect travel data vital to transportation planning in the state

• Data collected from this survey will provide information on how travel behavior has changed over the past 10 years and inform forecasts to help shape Michigan's transportation system.

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is kicking off a household travel survey that will provide information necessary to set transportation priorities for the next 20 years. Starting April 15, randomly selected households across Michigan will have the opportunity to provide details regarding how they travel.

The survey, MI Travel Counts, will be conducted by nationally recognized research firm Resource Systems Group, Inc. (RSG) on behalf of MDOT. Survey results will help transportation planners better understand how, when, where, and why people travel in and around the state of Michigan. Last conducted in 2015, this update will help planners account for the many changes in travel that have occurred, like the prevalence of remote work, the increase in online shopping, and greater use of ridesharing and delivery services.

Randomly selected households will receive an invitation to participate in the survey via U.S. Mail. Upon accepting the invitation, household members will provide demographic data and then report their travel either via a smartphone application, online or by telephone. The information provided to MI Travel Counts will be anonymized and aggregated to calculate statistics for study purposes.

This survey will be conducted in three phases. The first is scheduled from April 15 through early June, with additional phases anticipated in spring 2025 and fall 2025.

Invited households will be selected at random across the state, with survey materials available in English, Spanish and Arabic. Participation is possible through smartphone application, web or telephone. For more information about MI Travel Counts, visit www.MITravelCounts.com .
