Book Signing Experience for Marissa Meyer’s New Book

Check out my experience with Marissa Meyer’s book tour for her new book!

There are four book covers from left to right, Renegades, Heartless, Instant Karma, and Cinder. With a Little luck is in the center, with a photo of author Marissa Meyer to the right.

Imagine this — you get to meet one of your favorite authors when she releases a new book. You’re excited but nervous since this is the first time in over a decade that you’ve been to a book signing. You have so much to say because the characters she’s written have meant so much to you, and you want to express your love for the characters that have changed your life. For me, getting to meet Marissa Meyer for her With a Little Luck book tour was exactly that and more.

Book cover of With a Little luck has orange background with sun setting as the two characters, Ari (holding a guitar) and Jude look at one another as they sit on sand.

I can recall my first time ever going to a book signing. It was October 2013 with Veronica Roth’s Allegiant . I designed shoes inspired by the book, and I felt the excitement of being with fans who just understood what loving a story was like. Fast forward to February 18, 2024. There I was at the Barnes & Noble Stevens Creek parking lot, getting ready to meet the author who wrote the Renegades series that I fell in love with when I was changing my career trajectory in my junior year of college.

As I lined up to check into the event area, I was so overwhelmingly happy. Some fans cosplayed with incredible tiaras and full character costumes, and some wore sweet references from Meyer’s books, from Heartless to all the books in the Lunar Chronicles series. Character art was also passed out to all the attendees. After waiting in my seat for a bit, delighted gasps echoed throughout the area at the glimpse of Marissa Meyer just a few steps away.

Character art work with Jude and Ari with Dungeons & Dragons dice shown with author signature.

As the Q&A started, Abigail Hing Wen, author of Loveboat, Taipei , started with questions about With a Little Luck , namely what inspired the story. Meyer cited different things such as Dungeons & Dragons and The Beatles, particularly for this book, which has the same name as the song by Paul McCartney & Wings. As we arrived at the audience Q&A questions, some fun ones asking about the 20-sided dice, and insightful writer questions were asked.

Book Signing Anticipation

With the Q&A at a close, the signing began. I lined up with everyone along the rows of DVDs and puzzles with copies of Archenemies , Supernova , Heartless , and With a Little Luck in tow. If I’m being honest, I was incredibly antsy trying to figure out what I wanted to say without jumbling up my words. By the time I finally perfected it, it was go time.

With the biggest smile on my face and nerves to the highest level, I took a breath and talked about how much Nova meant to me, especially with the details of her Filipino heritage like mentions of lumpia. In the short time I had to speak with her, I just talked about how thankful I was to her for writing Renegades in the first place. Though I was too overwhelmed to mention how this series helped me get back into my love for reading and was part of the catalyst for changing my career, I hope she felt the love I had for her books and writing overall.

While I didn’t get to roll a 1 or 20 with the 20-sided dice she had to win a limited Marissa Meyer passport, I sure felt lucky to have experienced this book signing altogether.

Marissa Meyer Writes the Books She’d Like to Read

“I love the inherent optimism and boldness” in young adult fiction, says the novelist, best known for reimagining classic fairy tales. Her new book is the contemporary rom-com “With a Little Luck.”

What books are on your night stand?

“Rough Around the Hedges” by Lish McBride and “Teach Your Own: The Indispensable Guide to Living and Learning With Children at Home” by John Holt and Pat Farenga. For family bedtime reading, we just started “Julie of the Wolves” by Jean Craighead George.

Do you write with an ideal reader in mind? Who is it?

Mostly I try to write books that I would enjoy reading myself. Sometimes I’ll think back to Teen Marissa and what sort of story would have captured my imagination, what sort of characters would have felt like friends, what plot twists would be exciting or romantic enough that I would have wanted to come back to that book again and again. Then I try to write that.

Your podcast is called “The Happy Writer.” Is there such a person?

Yes — me! It isn’t hyperbole. I love what I do. Of course there are days when writing can feel like a chore, or I’m struggling to make a particular plot twist work, or I have to review copy-edits (ugh). But more than a decade into this career, I would still rather spend my time writing than doing just about anything else. I started the podcast in part to help other writers find — if not joy in their writing, at least a sense of personal satisfaction and contentment, and to bring as much happiness into the writing journey as we can. It has a lot to do with perspective, which is something we can cultivate if we’re intentional about it.

What makes you, as a writer, happy?

Piecing together a bunch of random scenes until they become one coherent story, like building a complicated jigsaw puzzle. Or that moment when an elusive character finally starts to talk to me. Or writing “The End” on a project I’ve been working on for years. Or a thousand other things on top of that.

Which genres do you especially enjoy reading? And which do you avoid?

I mostly read young adult — I love the inherent optimism and boldness we see in so many Y.A. books, and I also love to know what my peers are coming up with. I also enjoy nonfiction on whatever topic I’m currently obsessed with (lately there have been a lot of home-schooling guides). As for what I avoid — I guess I don’t read a lot of thrillers, maybe because I’m too easily scared?

Who is your favorite literary hero or heroine?

Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride and Prejudice.” It’s incredible to me how a character created more than 200 years ago can still be so relatable. Hashtag life goals.

What’s a fictional love story that more readers should know about?

Annith, a 15th-century assassin who serves the Lord of Death, and a damned soul who is more than he seems, from “Mortal Heart” by Robin LaFevers .

Why do fairy tales appeal to you?

When I was 5, I was given a book of fairy tales that included Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” which is when I realized that there was a lot more to these stories than Disney was telling me. I’ve been fascinated by fairy tales ever since. I love how a story can endure for hundreds or thousands of years, being constantly retold or adapted for each new generation, and yet maintain the same themes and messages at its core. Cinderella is an easy example. If you compare “Ye Xian” from ninth-century China to the Grimm Brothers’ “Aschenputtel” to Disney’s “Cinderella,” there are clear differences. And yet the heart of the tale remains the same, suggesting there is something universal and timeless that we relate to.

You began by writing fan fiction. Have you read fan fiction that draws on characters you’ve created?

Many years ago when I first heard there were Lunar Chronicles fanfics, I got really excited and searched them out on fanfiction.net. I think I read one short story from Prince Kai’s point of view. But coming from a fandom background, I know these stories are created for other fans, not the original creator, and I didn’t want any writers to feel like I might be lurking around the archives, ready to judge or critique their work. I haven’t read any fanfics inspired by my books since, but I still love knowing that they’re out there.

What’s been your most memorable experience on a book tour?

Years ago I remember meeting a young girl with dyslexia who had never managed to read a complete novel until she discovered “Cinder.” She went on to read the entire Lunar Chronicles, and by the time I met her, she had become a very avid reader. She started crying when we met, and I think it was the first time I realized that the books I’d written could mean a lot more to someone than just a few hours of entertainment.

Book Review – Gilded by Marissa Meyer

Book Review – Gilded by Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times -bestselling author, returns to the fairytale world with this haunting retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue. Or so everyone believes. When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her . . . for a price. Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.

This month, Julie and I actually listened to the same book! So in celebration, here’s our joint review of GILDED by Marissa Meyer.

Julie Review Avatar

AHHHH! Why did this have to end! No I need the next book now!

Ok let’s back up. I’m in a solid 4+ rating on this one. The Rumplestilskin fairy tale wasn’t a favorite of mine, but this retelling is one of my favorites from Marissa Meyer. I loved her Lunar Chronicles overall, but had some mixed feelings over 2 of the books (but the 5 novel + novallas series is a must read!). Her Queen of Hearts story was very good (and thankfully standalone), and this one even better. I love the storytelling style Marissa Meyer has, and even more loved the stories within the story here.

I will say I didn’t get a good feel for how to picture Gild in my mind, I’d love some illustrations. Serilda is a great protagonist. She definitely has a strong moral compass and just wants to do the right thing even if she’s a tale spinner and has a liar’s gift. But is it all lies? I want to know if she can pull the truth into a story without realizing, or perhaps if she can control the outcome by telling a story. Please tell me more in the next book!

I enjoyed the easy friendly banter between Gild and Serilda, their growing need for understanding and each other. Knowing the story of the “first born” being used as payment for spinning straw into gold, some of the turns of events in the book were not a surprise. But some, oh wow. The Erlking and his never-ending cruelty, the threats and ultimatums. I love the darkness in the stories, the Grimm’s fairy tale feel of everything. This draws me in and makes me want to keep reading (or listening in this case). I love that. I need more stories that pull me in and keep me there.

Just when I felt like I was getting to know Serlida so well and understanding her abilities, just as we get all the juicy bombshells, we have to stop and wait for the second book. And I’m thankful it comes out in just a few months and this is a duology. This means the next book will answer all my questions soon.

Let’s next talk about the audiobook since we both listened to this one. I love Rebecca Soler. Love her! I’ve read a lot of Marissa Meyer’s book and most of them were via audio. I’ve come to really connect with Rebecca Soler’s voices and her great narration helps move the story faster and build excitement.

Anyway now I’ll be waiting for the next book because I want to know how the curse will be broken, or if our fun characters will forever be trapped by the Erlking.

Lynnpic

Let’s start with the good stuff – the rating right away! I’m going with somewhere between 4 and 5 Stars. I enjoyed it. But wasn’t blown away. I also can’t really pinpoint issues, other than I kept picturing Gild as Gold\Rumple from Once Upon a Time. And after that picture stuck in my head, it was difficult to erase! No matter how attractive Gild in the novel might have been. So 4 stars it is.

I really enjoyed the fairy tale vibe going on in GILDED. Serilda weaves some great stories. Some were cute. Some were scary. This novel has the German fairy tale vibe down. (Not sure what that is? How about this helpful info from Mr. Gaiman!) I’m not going to attempt to spell any of the creature names, but let’s just say a chandelier taking a bite out of your shoulder certainly gets my attention.

Honestly, I don’t have a lot of recollection on the actual Rumpelstiltskin story, other than the general gold spinning & what’s his name mystery. Julie reminded me about the baby part of the original tale. And by golly, does that part of the story come into play at the end of GILDED! Given my lack of memory, I think this novel, like Ms. Meyer’s other retellings, offers a fresh look at the fairy tales, with enough twists and turns to keep me interested. I appreciated the plot point of the real world and the undead world only being able to cross at the full moon. This moves the plotline forward at a rapid pace.

As for the characters, they are richly developed and fully formed. The Erlking makes an excellent villain. And his cast of ghosts and ghouls are equally as delicious. Gild is more of a mystery, which I think is the whole point of the novel.

Ms. Soler does an excellent job with the narration (see the above mention of creature names!). And thankfully it’s been awhile since listening to the CINDER series, so I didn’t have those character voices stuck in my head while listening. Overall, enjoyed this listen, and I’m looking forward to discovering the conclusion in CURSED.

Personal Side Note: Totally forgot that Jamie Dornan was in OUAT for a short amount of time. Might need a rewatch party! Obligatory Captain Hook GIF!

Fun! I didn’t even know about this book — and a handsome Rumpelstiltskin?? I am not sure my brain will allow that. I loved the Lunar Chronicles but fell off reading after the 4th book. I hadn’t thought about listening to them since GASP, I paid for the print copies and dont’ want to pay again!!

Hah! The library also has audiobooks, Kristine!

Marissa Meyer Books In Order

Publication order of gilded books, publication order of lunar chronicles books, publication order of renegades books, publication order of wires and nerve graphic novels, publication order of standalone novels, publication order of anthologies.

When Marissa Meyer was in her teenage years, she had discovered anime and fanfiction—throughout the years she developed a hobby of creating her own fan fictions like the one’s she read. When Meyer was of age to work, her first job was at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma, Washington. Later on she attended Pacific Lutheran University and her new job was to be a mail attendant. Her stay at the University was rewarded with a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and Children’s Literature. It was then that she realized she wanted a career as a novelist; she continued her schooling until she got her master’s degree and settled as an editor in Seattle after graduation. As an unlikely result, Meyer then became a freelance typesetter and proofreader. Days went by, and eventually the right offer struck; making CINDER her first debut novel in the Lunar Chronicles.

Cinder revels in a dystopian fiction—a life beyond a child’s wildest dreams. Marissa Meyer reveals the beauty fallen beneath the gutter of forbidden, wicked attraction between two separate lives. Cinder, being the main character is a mechanic cyborg, the ultimate enigma. She was made to follow orders, a professional mechanic for a reason. However, she is caught between duty and freedom when Prince Kai’s enters her life. Cinder is only one of many epic novels Meyer has wrote, with each defined detail capturing the hearts of many.

Not too long after Meyer released her debut novel did she put her readers in awe when Scarlet was released. The book follows two factoring characters, Scarlet Benoit and Wolf. Both of them team up to uncover Scarlet’s missing grandmother, but what really shocked her readers was the appearance of Cinder herself. As Scarlet and Wolf work together to unravel one problem, they cross another mystery when encountering Cinder. Throughout the story they discover just how difficult it is to stay one step ahead of the “vicious” Lunar Queen, who was persistent in keeping Prince Kai as her husband, her king, and how many others see it, her prisoner.

With Cress being the third bestselling book in the Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and her new “friend” Caption Thorne are fugitives, with Scarlet and Wolf following. Knowledge of Queen Levana’s intents of invading Earth, they must focus on a plot to withstand her army.

That is when their best hope is discovered, being Cress—who was stranded on a satellite since her childhood with only netscreens as friends. With all of those screens and nothing else to do, Cress had made a brilliant hacker but with unfortunate circumstance her loyalty lies with Queen Levana. If that wasn’t bad enough, Queen Levana had every intention on sending Cress to track down Cinder and the ones to follow her. Later on in the book, Cress finds her freedom but that was not without a cost. Meanwhile, Queen Levana was set on marrying former Emperor Kai. The world’s last hope was in the six hands of Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder. Readers have gone haywire over this series so far, and are awaiting Meyer’s next novel called winter; coming in 2015.

Side Projects

Although Marissa Meyer has made a name for herself in the novelist industry, she still continues to write on websites most freelancers still use, showing that her earlier years as a freelancer haven’t quite worn off. A small prequel to Cinder was made using a Wattpad account, the short story called Glitches. The story evolves’ around Cinder’s emotional turmoil over the plague, causing Cinder to wonder if she has a “glitch” or not, hence the catchy title.

Sure enough, Meyer must’ve thought both Scarlet and Cinder deserved a prequel, and so The Queen’s Army was her next short tale of choice, also beautifully written on the same Wattpad account. The Queen’s Army is a short story following Queen Levana’s biggest creation, “Z”. The story is as compelling as it is needed to see how wonderfully developed Queen Lavana’s characterization is.

Speaking of side projects, Meyer’s fans have been raving about the possibility of an actual movie being made of those dangerously addictive books. Although there is no confirming or denying this potential, active readers are still hoping to see the trailer’s made for the ongoing series to come to life.

Despite contrary belief, the ability to imagine so much and organize it down to paper to begin the process of novel structure is a lot more tedious than it looks. Meyer is known for counting the seconds until she can get her next idea out on paper. She possesses a special “black folder” for each of her books, all holding research and notes relevant to the making of the Lunar Chronicles series. She’s a firm believer of spending time with research and silly pamphlets for ideas so she can really capture the essence of her story. Marissa Meyer works as a true author should, with dedication to put visualization in her reader’s minds, to allow their own imaginations to peak. Meyer claims to have a theory or “system” she uses when finding structure in her stories, or when having the issue in finding new material to write. “Look around, see what the world has to offer in tiny pamphlets or silly broachers,” exclaimed Meyer, telling the fans of her blog her secrets to success.

Although Meyer’s next book isn’t scheduled for release until 2015, she continues to update her media blogs for her fans with snippits of writing here and there. Currently, she is living the best of both unintended worlds – while fulfilling her dream of being a novelist, and continuing her previous hobby of blogging. All three books from the Lunar Chronicles can be purchased from kindle, amazon, or the nearest book store for a reasonable price. The money is worth the journey into the depths of Marissa Meyer’s unique and unfathomably beautiful stories belonging to a fictional world so bizarre a Wizard couldn’t wish it up if they tried. Be sure to catch her daily blogposts filled with tidbits of spoilers for her upcoming novel Winter, striving to be one of the bests additions in the Lunar Chronicles yet. The series will definitely not disappoint those with an eye for discovering fictional brilliance in a surreal world of nonsensical abilities.

Review: Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice. The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone... except the villains they once overthrew. Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

REVIEW: Renegades by Marissa Meyer

I have been dying for  Renegades ever since I first heard the news that it was being written. Marissa Meyer is one of my favourite authors, and she did not disappoint in her latest work. The book tells the story of heroes vs. villains, but has a focus on the villains’ side. The main character is likeable, even though she is a villain, and the writing is so suspenseful.  Renegades is so entertaining to read, and I can’t wait to get my hands on book two!

❀ Not Your Typical Superhero Book

This is not your typical superhero book. It tells the story of two sides: the Renegades (the heroes) and the Anarchists (the villains). The main character of the book, Nova, is an anarchist, and poses as a Renegade to gain inside information so that she can get her revenge against them. I loved how not only Nova leads a double life, but Adrian, who is a Renegade, has a secret of his own. Renegades is incredibly complex, and I can’t begin to tell you how much I loved it. There is spying, suspense, and plenty of action in this book, making it a unique take on the good vs. evil trope.

❀ A Perfect Villain

I adored the main character in  Renegades . Nova is a villain, which I don’t see very much of in books, and for once, I was actually rooting for the villainous side. What I really enjoyed about Nova is the fact that she genuinely believes that her plan to overthrow the Renegades is the right thing to do, and she has valid reasons for hating them. Nova is also intelligent and sneaky, which makes her the perfect villain.

❀ Phenomenal Writing

As always in Marissa Meyer’s books, the writing is phenomenal. The fight scenes are all so well-written, and she really knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I enjoyed how the world and the powers are all logical, and everything is so developed. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see more badass powers, but the characters’ abilities are still interesting.

❀ An original book

Renegades is an original adventure book about a villain posing as a hero. The main character is clever, and she has a complex backstory. I loved the writing, as always with Marissa Meyer, and I would definitely recommend this book to everyone—superhero fan or not.

Book Quotes: Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Book beginning:.

We were all villains in the beginning.
Adrian checked to be sure no one was peering down from any nearby windows, then pressed his fingers into the center of the suit’s chest piece. The armor clunked and hissed, folding in on itself like origami, rolling inward along his limbs until the suit was no bigger than a crushed aluminum can.

Detailed book overview

Catherine may be among the most sought after girls in Wonderland, but her interests lie elsewhere. A darling of the unwed King of Hearts, the gifted baker hopes to open a pastry shop with her best friend; an ambition that her mother considers as an act of defiance given that she could potentially become the next Queen. While at a royal ball where the king is supposed to propose to her, Cath meets Jest—the strange yet attractive court joker. Feeling a true attraction toward him, yet cautious not to offend the king and her parents, she and Jest enter into a passionate, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny by falling in love on her terms, but will she succeed in a land where magic, madness and monsters rein?

Chronic overachiever Prudence Daniels is always quick to cast judgment on the lazy, rude, and arrogant residents of her coastal town. Her dreams of karmic justice are fulfilled when, after a night out with her friends, she wakes up with the sudden ability to cast instant karma on those around her.

Pru giddily makes use of the power, punishing everyone from public vandals to mean gossips, but there is one person on whom her powers consistently backfire: Quint Erickson, her slacker of a lab partner. Quint is annoyingly cute and impressively noble, especially when it comes to his work with the rescue center for local sea animals.

When Pru resigns herself to working at the rescue center for extra credit, she begins to uncover truths about baby otters, environmental upheaval, and romantic crossed signals―not necessarily in that order. Her newfound karmic insights reveal how thin the line is between virtue and vanity, generosity and greed . . . love and hate… and fate.

He agrees to help her… for a price. Love isn't meant to be part of the bargain.

Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.

Be still now, and I will tell you a tale.

Adalheid Castle is in chaos.

Following a shocking turn of events, Serilda finds herself ensnared in a deadly game of make-believe with the Erlking, who is determined to propel her deeper into the castle’s lies. Meanwhile, Serilda is determined to work with Gild to help him solve the mystery of his forgotten name and past.

But soon it becomes clear that the Erlking doesn’t only want to use Serilda to bring back his one true love. He also seeks vengeance against the seven gods who have long trapped the Dark Ones behind the veil. If the Erlking succeeds, it could change the mortal realm forever.

Can Serilda find a way to use her storytelling gifts for good—once and for all? And can Serilda and Gild break the spells that tether their spirits to the castle before the Endless Moon finds them truly cursed?

Thirteen of the most celebrated bestselling authors team up with thirteen leading BookTubers in this Young Adult anthology to recreate fairy tales from the often misjudged villains’ points of view.

These uncommon twists on classics like “Medusa,” Sherlock Holmes, and “Jack and the Beanstalk” give a backstage look into villains, and their acts of vengeance, resistance, and fury—along with the pain, heartache and sadness that spurned them on.

Fairy tales will never be the same again after this.

This anthology features writing from Renée Ahdieh, Ameriie, Soman Chainani, Susan Dennard, Sarah Enni, Marissa Meyer, Cindy Pon, Victoria Schwab, Samantha Shannon, Adam Silvera, Andrew Smith, April Genevieve Tucholke and Nicola Yoon

From dogsleds and ships, stagecoaches and trains, take a journey across America right from pirate ships off the coast of the Carolinas to the peace, love, and protests of Chicago in the 1960s.

In this anthology, fifteen of the most gifted writers of young adult literature today take us on a exciting ride through history with American girls creating their own course.

Made up of monsters and mediums, bodyguards and barkeeps, screenwriters and schoolteachers, heiresses and hobos, they use every weapon in their artillery for brave acts such as defeating murderers and overcoming marriage proposals.

Even better is that they share the story.

Cinder is plotting a daring escape from prison. Executing it will however mark the beginning of her problems, as she’ll become the most wanted fugitive in the Commonwealth.

Elsewhere, halfway across the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother—who has lived in danger her whole life—goes missing.

While attempting to rescue her, Scarlet meets a street fighter by the name Wolf. Hesitant at first, she has little choice but to trust him, as her desire to find her grandmother overrides the suspicion she has of him.

It is while working with the street fighter that Scarlet crosses paths with Cinder.

There, they join forces to thwart Queen Levana’s plans of making Prince Kai her husband, king and prisoner.

Escapees on the run, Cinder, Captain Thorne, Scarlet and Wolf are planning to overthrow Queen Levana—thereby preventing her from invading Earth with her army.

The only person who can help them achieve this is Cress. A prisoner, the talented hacker has however been blackmailed to work for Queen Levana, and is on orders to track down Cinder and her co-conspirator.

Cress is freed after an audacious rescue mission; one that comes at a price as the group is separated.

With Queen Levana still determined to get married to Emperor Kai, Cress, Scarlet and Cinder are the only ones who can save the Earth.

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Who is the fairest of them all?”

Keen followers of the adored Lunar Chronicles know that Queen Levana is an evil genius who uses her “glamour” to gain power.

However, long before she faced off with the likes of Cinder, Scarlet and Cress, Levana lived a very different story.

This epic tale of love, war, treachery and death tells the untold story of Levana.

This book also includes full-color art, and an excerpt from Winter—the next installation of the Lunar Chronicles series.

Winter is the stepdaughter of Queen Levana. She detests Levana, and knows that her stepmother could never approve of her feelings for Jacin—her childhood friend who now serves as a palace guard.

Unlike her stepmother however, Princess Winter is loved by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness.

Despite the noticeable scars across her face, her beauty is considered far beyond that of Queen Levana.

Winter has over the years undermined her stepmother’s authority, and with the help of Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, and her allies, the Princess could very well spark an uprising that could finally bring down Queen Levana.

Will this story have a happy ending?

The Lunar Chronicles universe has many stories and secrets. How did Cinder for instance arrive in New Beijing? How did Wolf transform end up becoming a killer? When did Princess Winter and Jacin, the palace guard, know their fates?  Stars Above is a must have for fans of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles.

The stories contained in this book include: The Keeper, Glitches, The Queen’s Army, Carswell’s Guide to Being Lucky, After Sunshine Passes By, The Princess and the Guard, The Little Android, The Mechanic and Something Old, Something New.

In this first graphic novel, celebrated author Marissa Meyer reveals more about the world of the Lunar Chronicles with an exciting, new, action-oriented story about Iko—the android with a heart of mechanized gold.

When rogue packs of wolf-hybrid soldiers threaten to disrupt the fragile peace alliance between Earth and Luna, Iko considers it her responsibility to hunt down the leader of the soldiers.

But Iko starts having doubts regarding everything she knows about love, loyalty and her own humanity when she begins working with a handsome royal guard.

Being that it contains appearances by Cinder and the rest of the Rampion crew, this is a book that should be in the possession of every fan of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series.

Iko, the brave android with a heart of mechanized gold, and best friend to Queen Cinder, is on a mission to hunt down Alpha Lysander Steele—leader of a rogue band of wolf-hybrid soldiers who threaten to disrupt the fragile peace agreement between Earth and Luna.

Determined to find a way of blackmailing the Lunar Queen to reverse the mutations that were forced on them several years back, Steele and his soldiers start taking hostages with the motive of starting a massacre of the innocents.

Featuring Cinder and Kai, Scarlet and Wolf, Cress and Thorne, and Winter and Jacin, the world of the Lunar Chronicles comes alive once again in this stirring continuation of Wires and Nerve .

“All she wants is vengeance. All he wants is justice.”

Comprising of humans with extraordinary abilities, the Renegades are an organization of prodigies who rose from the ruins of a destroyed society to establish law and order at a place where violence reigned.

As the primary advocates of justice, they are the beacon of hope and bravery to everyone—save for the villains they once overthrew.

Nova is a girl who despises the Renegades and seeks revenge. But while undertaking her mission, she crosses paths with Adrian—a boy who believes in justice, and in Nova.

Nova’s loyalty is however to a villain; something that could end them both!

“Are Nova and Adrian each other’s worst nightmare?”

During the debut novel of this part thriller, part superhero fantasy series, Nova and Adrian—otherwise known as Insomnia and Sketch—fought the battle of their lives against the Detonator, aka the Anarchist. It was however just but a short-lived victory.

The Anarchists still possess a secret weapon; something that Nova believes will protect her.

On the other hand, the Renegades have devised a plan to overcome the Anarchists. Nova and Adrian however understand that executing it could very well mean the end of Gatlon City, and by extension, the world.

“All's fair in love and anarchy…”

Nova and Adrian are having a hard time hiding their secret identities when the never ending battles between their alter egos, their allies, and their greatest fears roar to life.

As anarchy once again seeks to take over Gatlon City, secrets, lies and betrayals will come to light.

Will the city survive this time round?

One thing is for sure. You can never wear a mask forever. Love and Anarchy simply won't allow it.

This is the epic conclusion to the exhilarating Renegades Trilogy by Marissa Meyer.

Why Cress was First Named “Arugala” by Marissa Meyer | Blog Tour + Author Guest Post + Giveaway

Cress-blog-tour-banner

I am so happy to be kicking of the Cress blog tour today! The Lunar Chronicles is my favorite series ever, and Cress is a wonderful addition to a group of amazing characters. Marissa’s writing never ceases to amaze me. It’s no surprise that her books get better and better as she publishes them. I loved Cinder and Scarlet , but Cress is definitely my favorite. Here’s my review , if you’re interested. I can’t wait for you to read it!

I’m excited to have Marissa Meyer on the blog to tell you all about the making of Cress . I always love it when authors have behind the scenes tidbits to share with us, and Marissa has written a very fun post that I’m sure you’ll enjoy!

Why Cress was First Named “Arugala” by Marissa Meyer

Cinder = Cinderella.

Scarlet = Little Red.

Winter = Snow White.

It doesn’t take too much imagination, or fairy tale know-how, to figure out how I got the names for most of my heroines. But Cress and Rapunzel? That’s where a lot of readers get hung up.

So, allow me to explain.

The tale of Rapunzel opens with a poor man and his wife overjoyed at their first pregnancy. However, during her pregnancy, the wife begins to have some pretty intense food cravings. Not for pickles and ice cream, as a normal pregnant woman might have. Oh, no. This poor woman was craving salad. In particular, she really, really wanted a very particular kind of lettuce called . . . wait for it . . . rapunzel.

She wanted this lettuce so badly that she believed she would die if she didn’t get it. Unfortunately, the only place in their town that rapunzel grew was in the witch’s garden. So one night the husband hopped over the wall and stole some rapunzel and brought it back to his wife, who devoured it like a ravenous vegan.

This continued for a few nights until—dun dun dun!—one night, the witch caught the husband stealing from her. So she posed a compromise. The witch would kindly spare the man’s life, and even allow him to take as much rapunzel back to his wife as she wanted, if, when his wife gave birth, they would give the child to the witch as payment. The husband agreed and his wife got a nice steady diet of salad greens for the remainder of her pregnancy.

A while later, the wife gives birth to a beautiful baby girl. They give the baby to the witch who takes her and raises her as her own daughter.

And the witch names the child, you guessed it, Rapunzel.

The point of this story is that rapunzel is a type of lettuce. As it so happens, cress (a.k.a. watercress), is also a type of lettuce.

On a side note, when I was first coming up with character names, I called my Rapunzel heroine “Arugula” (another kind of lettuce) for all of ten minutes, before I realized I’d never be able to say it with a straight face.

Side note number two: Another word that is sometimes used interchangeably with rapunzel is rampion. Also known as the name I gave my spaceship, thanks to the clever suggestion of a friend.

Lettuce greens FTW.

Lastly, while I’m on the topic of Lunar Chronicles names, I’ll tell you that both “Carswell” and “Thorne” have hidden meanings that relate to Thorne’s role in the books and fairy tale.

But I’ll let savvy readers figure those out on their own . . .

I love The Lunar Chronicles because it saved my heartbroken fangirl heart after reading Allegiant. The only regret I have is reading this book last Dec. 2013 but I believe it was the right time. :”> I just love it. I love princesses and princes. I love Kai, Cinder, Scarlet, Wolf, Cress, Thorne, Jacin, Winter, Iko, Peony. :”> Ren Birol recently posted… Giveaway: ARC of Cress (Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer – CHRISTINA READS YA

I loved reading this! I absolutely adored Cress, and I think Marissa Meyer’s world building is incredible, so it’s great to hear more about it. I’m glad she went with Cress, because it just sounds really cute. Aragula sounds like a kind of spider. And now I need to find out what Thorne’s name means….. I solved why he was named Thorne but I can’t figure out Carswell… The website I’m linking below helped me connect SO many things and events from the original Ralunzel story to events Cress that I never would have known!! It also helped me figure out the connection of Thorne’s name. Now off to wonder about “Carswell”…

Here’s the website I used http://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/rapunzle/story.htm

' src=

In Rapunzel, the prince finds Rapunzel in the tower and climbs up her hair to visit her. One day, the witch discovers that the prince has been visiting Rapunzel and decides to trick him. So, the next time the prince arrives, when he climbs up the tower the witch is waiting for him. She pushes him off the tower and he falls into a huge swath of thorns, becoming blind. So that’s how she probably got Thorne…. I don’t know about Carswell though :P

(in reply to Judith, by the way :D)

(that was in reply to Judith, by the way :D)

Ack! It keeps duplicating everything I’m writing! XD

lol. Look at all the pretty comments you made! :P Thanks for shedding light on Thorne’s name! I had no idea that was part of the story! How interesting!

I am seriously dying waiting for the release of Cress. The only thing that has held me over was the release of the first five chapters, but now as we get closer to the release date I am finding it harder to control my need!

Before Cinder, I never had much of a fondness for fairytale retellings. I was actually hesitant to read Cinder because it seemed so “out there.” But that’s exactly what I ended up loving most about the book. It was inventive. The characters were amazing and the writing was superb. I loved Scarlet even more. I can’t wait for Cinder! kimberlyfaye recently posted… Release Event & Giveaway: Wish For You (Boys of the South #4) by Marquita Valentine

I really like modern fairy tales and I couldn’t stop reading Cinder. It is just so good! I loved all the twists to the story and the fact that the place where it took place is Beijing. That is something you don’t see very often. The special fantasy books are most often based in the USA and not being American or ever having been to the USA, I am not familiar with even the names.

I really want to keep on reading these Lunar Chronicles.

' src=

Yes!!! Alyssa was talking about her Thorne theories as she read and now I need her to re tell them to me haha! OMG arugula. I wouldn’t be able to handle is either. Haha, I remember when I was little, all the girls loved Rapunzel. But they never knew the reason her name was so peculiar. I asked my mother, and she told me the truth- Well, part of it. she revised the story to something like, “Rapunzel ate the Rapunzel, which is called lettuce in our world, and her hair grew long and beautiful.” I ate lettuce everyday for a year, before I realized that my hair was growing no faster than it used to. However, by then, is developed a fondness for lettuce and never stopped eating it since. ;) I can’t wait for cress!

' src=

Because I am such a huge fan of fairytales! Weheter it’s the Disney versions or the Grimm Brother’s I love them all. Also, Thorne & Wolf!

' src=

Yeah, I was wondering why her name was Cress, and then I figured it was short for Crescent, which ties into the novel, though it still didn’t have much to do with the fairytale. But now I understand! I honestly never knew the story behind Rapunzel’s name, and I don’t know why I never thought to look it up. And I am so curious as to what ‘Carswell’ and ‘Thorne’ mean in regards to the story. Thanks a lot for the giveaway, too. It’s so kind and awesome! :D

' src=

I first read Cinder on the recommendation of a friend and enjoyed it so much that I immediately read Scarlet. I can’t wait to read the next two books Cress and Winter

' src=

I love the Lunar Chronicles’ reinterpretation of fairy tales. While there were some plot quirks I predicted, it also caught me off my guard (in a good way!) — so the books make me think. The world building is also quite excellent and really makes me believe in the characters’ struggles.

' src=

I love hearing the back stories on how authors come up with their characters’ names. I definitely agree that Cress works better than Arugula ever would (nor would I be able to read about a character named Arugula without busting out laughing). Good call.

Having read the first five chapters of Cress, I can’t wait to get my hands on my own copy to see how a new heroine will fit in with already beloved characters. Plus, let’s be honest, I need more Thorne in my life. Jennifer H. recently posted… MPL Librarians Select . . . Favorite Books of 2013

The thing I love the most about the Lunar Chronicles would have to be the characters. (That and the way Meyer can really tell a good story, complete with facts like breadcrumbs perfectly spaced throughout.) Each character is skilled and unique but also flawed. It’s wonderful! Also, heck yes I am excited for Cress!

' src=

I love the fairy tale element in it and that even though it does have similarities with those fairy tales the story is completely different and original. Also the plot twists always keeps me guessing what is going on which is super exciting! And of course I’m excited for Cress!! I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

I love the Lunar Chronicles and I think Marissa Meyer is a writing genius! There are some people whose work I enjoy for entertainment, a light read, that kind of thing; and then there are authors like Marissa who are just SO SPECIAL they amaze me. I especially love how she turns these fairy tales on their heads and gives us such strong, fierce, independent, intelligent young women characters, but without making us feel like they are flawless “super women.” They have their flaws, of course, and we can relate to them, but they also show young women all of the amazing things that THEY can do in their own lives. I just love these books!! Thanks for being part of the tour!

' src=

The Lunar Chronicles is so uniquely crafted and unbelievably original! Nowadays, it’s hard to find a YA novel that isn’t focused on a dystopian setting or where the female protagonist isn’t dependent on their male counterpart. I was tired of the same stories with the same outcome, and though there are many great stories that are like that, a girl’s got to branch off now and then. My best friend was the first to tell me about Cinder and my first thought was, “Cyborg. Awesome.” And when I started, I could not put it down. From that very first page, I fell in love with the concept of shoving fairytales into an awesome sci-fi setting with a strong female character who, unlike previous female characters I’ve read, is convincing and real. She responds the way I would in situations and I absolutely love that. Super excited for Cress! :)

' src=

I am soooo excited to read Cress, i am really interested to know how she will keep in contact with Cinder and how Cinder will continue to hide from the queen!
