A famine ravaged Lucknow in 1784. The severity of it placed the average person in a state of poverty. Both the lower classes and the aristocrats had trouble finding food.

The Nawab of Awadh at the time was Asaf-ud-Daula. He had a reputation for being an unambitious man who enjoyed drinking and had odd interests. But he also had a reputation for being kind.

He ordered the building of Bara Imambara so that the underprivileged and unemployed may make money. The construction continued throughout the famine, which lasted for over ten years.

According to legend, during the famine, the noblemen would tear down the constructions that the laborers had built in the morning, ensuring that no one went without work. The Nawab employed nearly 20,000 people to build the spectacular Imambara. The imposing and majestic structure was finished after approximately ten years of work.

The Asafi Imambara is another name for this site of worship for Shia Muslims. For various events, particularly the Muharram, they congregate at the Imambara.

And this wall demonstrates the truth of the proverb, "even walls have ears."

They say it is a confusing maze, a place where you should not venture alone. You might get lost in its numerous passageways. Yes, there are almost 1000 passageways and 489 identical doorways at Bhul Bhulaiya in Lucknow. It is an intriguing architecture, built to support the massive central hall of the Bara Imambara . With so many fascinating facts and the mystery of Bhul Bhulaiya in Lucknow in my mind, we arrived at Lucknow after we completed the Rupin Pass Trek successfully.

I had wanted to visit the city since long and so I extended our leave for a couple of days and included Lucknow in the itinerary. Each time I visit Lucknow, I gradually fell for the city. With its historic grandeur, architectures, tonga rides and food, the city is an absolute delight for me. And yes, like many others, Bhul Bhulaiya at Bara Imambara in Lucknow is my major attraction in the city.

Bhul Bhulaiya Lucknow History

Bhulbhulayia is technically the labyrinth and the most amazing part of the Bada Imambara. There are people who visit Lucknow to visit the Bhulbhulayia. So what does the word Bhul Bhulayia mean? While I did not find any direct meaning of the word, the closest meaning would probably be ‘a place where one forgets the way and gets lost’.

In 1784, Lucknow (known as Awadh then) was struck by a famine. It was so severe that the common men were left with penury. Food was scarce for both the common men and the nobility. Asaf-ud-Daula was at that time the Nawab of Awadh. He was known to be an unambitious man fond of drinking and having eccentric interests. But he was known to be a generous man. So instead of saying something similar to “Let them eat cakes if they don’t get bread” like Queen Mary Antoinette, he did something unique. He commissioned the construction of Bara Imambara to generate income for the poor and unemployed. The famine lasted for almost a decade and the construction too lasted for that period. It is said that in the morning the labourers used to build the structures and at night the noblemen used to bring it down; so that the labourers were never out of work during the famine. The Nawab had employed almost 20000 people for the construction of the impressive Imambara.

After almost a decade of construction, the grand and impressive structure was completed. Also known as the Asafi Imambara, it is a place for the worship for the Shia Muslims. They gather at the Imambara for various ceremonies especially the Muharram.

Architecture of the Bhul Bhulaiya

As I had mentioned before, Bhulbhulayia is a part of the Bara Imambara in Lucknow. The entire Imambara along with its courtyard is a stunning place. And the Bhulbhulayia definitely steals the show. There is a reason why this labyrinthine network of corridors and 489 identical doors were made. It was decided by Nawab Asaf-ud Daula to construct the central hall without any supporting columns. He wanted to build a huge hall where people could pray together. So the Central Hall measuring 170 ft X 55 ft X 15 ft was built without any supporting columns! Such a huge structure would require supporting columns to bear the load of the ceiling and the mammoth dome if built by conventional building methods.

It was the sheer ingenuity of the architect Kifayatullah that he decided to reduce the weight of the ceiling by making it hollow. And this is how the Bhul Bhulaiya was born! The Bhul Bhulaiya was built in such a way to accommodate the design of the central hall. The Bhul Bhulaiya at Bara Imambara in Lucknow consists of a maze of intricately interwoven corridors – a path-breaking into multiple paths and they break down into other paths. The whole building was constructed in an exclusive way. There are windows placed at strategic points so that there is no dearth of ventilation and light during the day time. All these were done keeping in mind the structure of the Central Hall of the Imambara!

These corridors are quite impossible to manoeuvre unless you are with a guide. It is said that there is a passage leading to an underground tunnel going all the way to Delhi, Faizabad and Allahabad. These tunnels were later said to be sealed by the British after they did not find the royal treasure. Well, I do not know the truth; they might just be hearsay!

The mystery of Bhulbhulayia

When I first visited Bhulbhulayia, I was a kid and was quite afraid to venture into the labyrinth alone. I had obviously heard of many stories of people venturing there alone and never coming back. Of course, I had read Badshahi Angti by Satyajit Ray where Feluda (an iconic Bengali detective character) goes inside the Bhulbhulayia alone to hide a precious artifact. At that time I thought might be when I would be of Feluda’s age, I might be able to solve the puzzle of Bhulbhulayia.

So next time when we visited Lucknow , we thought of going there without a guide. Well, I am not confident of going inside all alone because I know my direction sense is extremely poor. But with Agni, we did give a try. Our guide told us that it is possible to go inside and come back also. He also gave us a tip as to how to find our way out. I don’t claim to make much sense of what he said, but Agni managed to understand and we were able to come out safe and sound. So yes, it is possible; though we did not venture much inside the maze.

As you enter the labyrinth, the guide will take you up a flight of 45 stairs. This is the starting point of the tour to Bhul Bhulaiya. The guide then took us to different passages and corridors. He also showed us the hidden tunnel leading to Delhi. All the while, he told us interesting stories and trivia about the place.

When walls have ears

This is where you could actually see the style and flamboyance of Lucknow. The guide tells us in his inimitable dramatic style about the proverb that ‘even walls have ears’. And then he goes on to demonstrate the same. He took us to a gallery like place where we stood at one end and he goes over to the other end. He lights a matchstick and we could hear the sound standing at the other end. Such are the acoustic system of the gallery that the sound was carried over 50 metres!

Walking through the corridors of Bhul Bhulaiya

There are several narrow tunnels, but interestingly all of them were well ventilated. The guide told us about the stories of how British soldiers got lost into the maze and never returned back. There are a few passages that are closed and out of bounds. The narrow ceilings and the dimly lit passageways did give an eerie feeling. All of them look identical. But that is what makes this place so exciting and interesting, isn’t it? What do you think?

The terrace of Bhul Bhulayia

A little here and there and then we came to the roof of the building. The roof is a beautiful place with the intricately designed windows or jharokas. From the rooftop, you can see the whole complex. The Rumi Darwaza, Asifi Masjid, Hussainabad Clock Tower as well as a stunning view of the Lucknow city by the Gomti River can be seen from the rooftop.

The challenge and mystery of Bhul Bhulaiya

The guide brings us to the labyrinth and then asks us to find the way down. Before that, he did give us a tip. He told us that we should follow the paths that would lead to direct sunlight. That would lead us to the starting point. He pointed us another interesting fact. While we climbed the 45 stairs to enter the labyrinth, we actually climbed up to the second floor and not the first floor. The people usually overlook this. So while coming down, a person usually remembers that he has to go downstairs, and not come up to the second floor where the stairs led from the entrance. From the terrace, while coming down, there would be a point where we had to climb up to the second floor and then come down again at the entrance on the ground floor! Sounds confusing? Well, it sure did to me. But as I said, Agni found out the way and so did a lot of others. Well, I would leave it to you to find your way to and fro from the maze of Bhul Bhulaiya. It is your discovery.

Other attractions at the Bara Imambara

There is the Asifi mosque , the Baoli or stepwell and also the Chhota Imambara all vying for your attention. We went around Bada Imambara leisurely and then also visited the Chhota Imambara, also known as the Hussainabad Imambara. If possible, please stay till the sunset at the Bara Imambara. The sunset behind the Asifi mosque is simply beautiful.

Lucknow is an impressive place. One visit is not enough to appreciate the city of Nawabs. We are sure that we would definitely come back again and discover its beauty and charm. And in the end, one more place ticked off the Feluda list! Yay!

The Bhul Bhulayia and Bara Imambara remains open from sunrise to sunset. The Bhulbhulayia opens a little late.

The Bhul Bhulayia Lucknow ticket price is different for Indian and foreign tourists. The ticket prices or entry fees are INR 25 per person for Indian tourists and INR 500 for foreign tourists

Guides: I would advise taking a guide with you. They do tell us a lot of interesting stories. But I would definitely not advise you to believe everything they say!

You have to open your shoes to enter the Bara Imambara. It would be good if you wear socks.

If you are claustrophobic, please let your guide know the same. The Bhulbhulayia can trigger claustrophobia.

Carry water with you. It will nearly take 2-3 hours to explore the compound.

How to reach Lucknow ?

Lucknow is well connected with other major cities by air, road and rail. Lucknow is very well connected by trains from Delhi and Howrah.

Once you are in Lucknow, you can hire a tonga (horse pulled carriage), rickshaw or car to reach Bara Imambara. We had hired an auto to visit the various attractions of Lucknow for the day.

Decrypting the Crypt: Bhool Bhulaiya at Bara Imambara in Lucknow

“It’s pretty impossible to get out of that maze without help” – That is what my friend told me after threw up a challenge at me. This was a few years ago when she had visited the famous labyrinth of Bada Imambara Lucknow – Bhool Bhulaiya. She could not stop gushing about how elaborate it was and how anyone could lose their sense of direction here. She said that she was pretty sure that even with my sense of direction ( Which I am proud to say is fairly good ) would not be able to get out. I had to wait for a couple of years to take that one and when I did, I discovered more than just the labyrinth. I found a gorgeous heritage monument – the Bara Imambara in Lucknow.

The moment I accepted the challenge, I read up on the Bara Imambara Lucknow on Google. As much as I wanted to head to Lucknow then, the opportunity presented itself only this year when Lucknow became our first stop enroute the Epic Indo- Nepal Road Trip . While the rest of my team was waiting to reach Lucknow to satiate their salivating taste buds, I had strapped on my camera, tightened my belt and donned the hat of Indiana Jones. All to set to take on the archaic challenge my friend had set on me. What happened follows with my thrilling exploration of the stunning Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow and the Bara Imambara. An introduction to the Bara Imambara

“Bara” means big while “Imambara” refers to a Shrine for the Shia Muslims .  The Shrine is essentially, for the Muharrum festival where the Shia Muslims commemorate the death of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. The Imambara is where the Muharrum procession concludes and this one was built by the Nawab of Awadh – Asaf-Ud-Daulah in the 1780s. The huge complex of the Bada Imambara includes much more than just the Imambara. It includes the Asafi Mosque , a stepwell or the Shahi Baoli and the famous labyrinth in Lucknow – Bhool Bhulaiya . The same complex now even, houses the grave of its creator – a fine memory for this structure wasn’t just built for religious purposes but is a symbol of the benevolence of a worthy ruler.

Bara Imambara History – Who built the famous Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow?

Legend has it that Lucknow was hit by a famine and that affected the livelihood of people here. It was then that Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daulah commissioned the Bada Imambara. This helped the needy with their daily earnings. As astute that he was, he did not forget the noblemen. Their job began at night and it was to break down whatever was built during the day. This helped keep work going and what could have taken a lesser amount of time, took 10 plus years to build. A perfect balancing act that is now symbolized by this timeless monument.

The Architecture of Bara Imambara Lucknow

From the moment we walked in through those elaborate gates of Bara Imambara, I knew that this place was going to throw up a lot of stories and surprises. The grand structure behind those sprawling gardens was calling out to us to get closer and start exploring. In fact, the structure that I saw had me fooled. I assumed that was the main building but it, in fact, was the main gate to the Bada Imambara. There were actually two gateways to this monument – one that I had just passed and the second that I had in front of me.

Besides the lovely designs etched on the first gate, pay close attention to the chambers along the arched passageway that you pass. You will see a gong hanging there. As history goes, the place also had huge drums within the chambers. This is the Naubat Khana. The arrival of important guests was announced by the men here by beating the drum and the gongs. Some say that even time was announced in this manner. It is likely that you might miss that as it is a part of the ticketing office of this Lucknow attraction today.

Note the fish etched onto the gateway – this was the symbol of the Nawabs and you will find them on most of the structures commissioned by the clan. The arched windows and the gateways led to another sprawling layout where to my right I had the grand Asafi Mosque, on the left was the Shahi Baoli while straight ahead lay the Bara Imambara with the epic Bhool Bhulaiya maze. There are plenty of interesting and unique facts about Bara Imambara that makes it one attraction in India that you should not miss. And most of them are related to architecture.

Facts about Bara Imambara Lucknow

• The entire structure of the Bara Imambara has no metal or wood used. It is in fact, made of edible material like daal, limestone and Rice Husks. These are called as Lakhori bricks (Lakhauri bricks) and can be found in most of the monuments built by the Nawabs.
• The high ceilings have no beams supporting it. In fact, the Bara Imambara is considered as one of the World’s largest arched structures.
• To give support to the high ceilings, the structure was made hollow and the roofs are of different heights. This led to the accidental construction of the Labyrinth – the Bhul Bhulaiya.

What? Did I just tell you that this fascinating structure – my place of mission,  was constructed not by design? However, that is a fact and frankly, a bit disappointing. I was hoping for some tale of how it was made to confuse the enemies and strategic reasons. Nonetheless, soon my disappointment was dissipated. For then, came the interesting stories of this labyrinth but after it was constructed. 😉

Three Chambers within Bara Imambara Lucknow

Shoes off and bare feet on a scorching floor outside the Bada Imambara is enough to get anyone to rush right into the building. The corridor that greets you before the main chamber has this cooling effect on you with its pale green interiors, high painted ceiling and the colorful lamps that hang from it.

This is where we started off with our guide who explained that there three main chambers inside the Bara Imambara. The first one on the left (East ) was the Chinese Chamber , the central long Chamber called the Persian Chamber and the last chamber on the right or the West called the Kharbooza Chamber or the Watermelon chamber. I don’t think my guide liked it when I asked him why those names for he did not have a plausible reason except for that their names were owing to their appearance. I am a little skeptical even about that for there was nothing really Chinese about that Chinese Chamber. 😉

The name of the Persian Hall befits the hallway for at least there were some elements of Persian design within it. The central chamber is the one that houses the tomb of its creator – both its sponsor, Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daulah and its architect – Khifayatullah. The story of its architect is one of those stories that I was referring to earlier. Apparently, this building design contract was awarded to the winner of an architecture design concept hosted by the Nawab. And when he had completed the building, Khifayatullah was questioned on whether the ceilings would hold up without the beams. To this he said, place me right below it and it will still not fall.

The central hall has several other interesting artifacts that you need to watch out for. This includes certain paintings and candelabra that have eternal flames lit around the tombs. There are the decorated Tazia – miniatures of the famed Karbalas that are crucial to the Muharrum festival. Ancient texts, portraits, photos and Candelabras decorate the rest of the hall. Our guide zipped us through it and whisked us to the first level of this Chamber for some more magic.

The acoustics of Bada Imambara

Through the narrow passages along the steep stairs, you are ushered onto the sides of what parapet that overlooks the central hall. We were all asked to stand in silence in a single file so that the magical properties of this hall could be demonstrated. I think this is when all the guides in the Bara Imambara become dramatic and begin their spiel by saying – ” Have you heard of the saying that Walls have ears? This is where we will demonstrate the same “

A matchstick was lit at the end of the 50m hall and through that silence, you could hear it right where we stood, at the other end of the hall. Such were the acoustics that a secret told within these walls would not remain one 😉

Through the tunnels of Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow

1000+ ways to get in but only one way out!

That is what I remember our proud guide telling us. As he led the way out from the main building to enter the steep staircase to the famous Bhool Bhulaiya. He told us that there were over 480 doorways that led to various tunnels within the Bara Imambara and also, away from it to as far as Delhi, Agra and Faizabad – the latter being the capital of Awadh.

Our guide took us in groups to show several of those narrow tunnels and regale us with stories of how various people, including the British, have got lost in those tunnels, never to be found again. Thus, a lot of these were now closed to the public. He said a lot of them had even died here owing to the claustrophobia that the low and high roofs and narrow passageways created. The dank interiors definitely do not help the cause but in the end, that does makes the labyrinth so deadly. Me? I could feel the adrenaline pumping for I was getting close to my challenge.

On the roof of Bhool Bhulaiya in Bara Imambara

Three lefts, two rights and we were out on the roof with its intricate windows called the Jharokhas. The numerous arched doorways opened up to both sides of the building from where you could see not just the rest of the campus but also, the city of Lucknow. The minarets and the entire structure served well as a watchtower, which I suspect would be one of the uses this place was put to. The flat roof could also, possibly be one of the places that were used for prayers, with the Asafi mosque so close by.

Finally – the challenge of Bhool Bhulaiya

Having spent a few cool moments (and literally so with the evening sun and the breeze), we finally got our challenge. Our guide ushered us back into the labyrinth and gave us 5 minutes to get ourselves out to the ground floor before he was to rescue us. The funny thing was I was quite ready and confident about it. Somehow, the human GPS in me was working well and confidently I made my turns to emerge out at the staircase that led us back to the ground floor in less than 5 minutes. And yes, you can applaud now! For Challenge completed successfully!.

I suppose I am ready for those underground passages now if someone could let me in. This challenge was way too simple! 😉

The Shahi Baoli or the Stepwell of Bara Imambara in Lucknow

Emerging out, I discovered yet another challenge. This crypt wasn’t the only one within this Lucknow historical place. Hidden in the form of a stepwell, lay another fascinating structure of mazes and windows. The Baoli, as is called in the local language, was more than just a storage for water. It served as a hiding place for the Nawabs from the enemies. In the words of the guide –  “The ones inside could see you but you will not be able to see them within”. 

A flight of stairs led me down to the five-storied Shahi Baoli. It is said that the stepwell was connected to the River Gomti and used to have enough water through the year. They say that there were provisions for hot water here and it was used for baths. The various galleries and corridors within the stepwell has a few halls and resting rooms for people.

With the sun setting on the other side of the Baoli, it was quite dark and damp inside. Once I was in, I realized that this maze could actually rattle a person. The guide told us a fascinating mystery connected to this well. With the riches of Nawab, came in the greed and envy of the British. They kept trying to get the maximum out of him. Fearing an attack on this treasure, the Nawab asked his treasurer – a Mool Chand Rastogi, to stash it within the monument. As ordered, the treasurer hid it all and threw away the key and map in the well.

The treasure is rumored to be hidden even now – maybe in this crypt of the several others within the Bara Imambara. No one knows where. The treasurer is said to have taken the secret within him to his death. He apparently, committed suicide in this well. The British came and tried their best to find it but were quite unsuccessful.

Wait – the mysteries of this monument is not yet over. The guide showcased its best feature just before we exited. He took us to one particular window and asked us to peer down at the little reflection in the water. We could spot a few tourists – one wearing a red t-shirt standing in the lawns of Bara Imambara. If you looked away and around, all you could see were the solid walls of the Shahi Baoli. This, in the guide’s words, is the “ CCTV technology of the Nawabs “. It is the manner in which this window is positioned that it allows the people within the Baoli to see outside but the outsiders cannot see anyone within. 😉

A quick look at the Asafi Mosque

Besides the Baoli, don’t miss the beautiful Asafi (Asfi) Mosque at Sunset. The Orange glow that sets on it, makes the entire silhouette look fascinating. The mosque completes the Imambara set up as a religious monument. It is a key mosque that buzzes with activity during the Muharrum festival. As a non-muslim, I could not go in but walking around it, revealed its elaborate decor and construction.

Shrouded with tales of its unique construction and the unsolved mysteries of its crypt, the Bara Imambara has my highest recommendation on places to visit in Lucknow . Even if you are in Lucknow for one day, you got to squeeze in 2 hours for this heritage destination. Try and get in here just around sunset as there are corners like the one below that glow in the setting sun.

How to get to the Bara Imambara in Lucknow?

Lucknow is easily accessible by road and rail from any city in India. There are plenty of regular flights to Lucknow. Once in Lucknow, you can either take a rickshaw or a taxi to get to Bara Imambara. You plan to take the metro, then consider the following stations for Bara Imambara. – Charbagh metro station – Durgapuri metro station – Alambagh metro station

All these metro stations are 3 km from the landmark Bhool Bhulaiya. You can hire one of the local autos or cabs to get from the metro to Bara Imambara

Where to stay in Lucknow?

Among the various areas to stay in Lucknow, I recommend Gomtinagar. You will get plenty of hotels for every possible budget in this area. Also, the location is quite central to this city with enough of public transport available.  There are options of hotels near Bara Imambara in Lucknow as well.

What is the best time to visit Bara Imambara?

Bara Imambara and Bhool Bhulaiya is open from 6 am to 5 pm every day. I would recommend the time after 2 pm when it is still day light. Your tour of Bara Imambara will take you at least 2 hours after which you can walk to Rumi Darwaza and catch the Chota Imambara. These two attractions look lovely in the evening when they are all lit up.

How much are the entrance tickets for Bada Imambara?

The entrance tickets to the Bara Imambara costs INR 50 for Indians and INR 500 if you are a foreigner. The camera charges are extra.

It is advisable to take a guide here. The guide charges are as displayed at the ticket counter itself.

Travel Tips

• You will need to remove your shoes once inside the Bara Imambara. Temple socks are available for a small price.
• Steer clear of the low parapets in the Bara Imambara for your own safety.
• If you are claustrophobic, please let your guide know in advance for the labyrinth can trigger the same for you.
• There are restrooms, drinking water facilities and a small cafe within the premises.

What gorgeous architecture. I found it particularly interesting that it’s made out of edible products instead of traditional building materials! I think I would get a bit overwhelmed by the labyrinth but it looks beautiful and interesting nonetheless.

What an amazing architectural masterpiece! For some reason, the interiors do remind me of some of the European palaces. Maybe because of the wall colors? Haha I lose my sense of direction when I’m hiking in my backyard so I can’t even imagine trying to find my way out of the labyrinth here! So I wonder if when exploring those tunnels you would still find human remains. How creepy to think!! Just loved these images! Lucknow Imambara is one of the monuments that I have always wanted to visit but I have never been able to make it to Lucknow. I heard of Bhool Bhulaiya in my schooldays while reading about Talatal Ghar in Assam. The later was believed to have been inspired by Bhool Bhulaiya to build the maze underneath the palace.

Nawabo ka shahar Lucknow is a place that we would love to visit but have somehow missed getting there many times. The Bara Inambara of course is a gem of a place, so finely etched, a masterpiece in stone. The Bhoolbhalaiya lookslike a challenge, not sure if our natural GPS is as good as yours. Great that you were able to emerge within 5 minutes from the labyrinth.

I also find the history behind it very interesting, and well done on completing the challenge in so little time! I’m sure I’d be there at least an hour!!

And to think – the underground portions have been sealed off. It must have been something back then. Am so glad that I managed to crack this small portion.

Brrr, this looks really scary! I’m not only claustrophobic but also totally disoriented in spaces like this. I don’t think I would have accepted this challenge, especially knowing how many people died in this labyrinth. I guess only the roof of the Bara Imambara would be for me.

Wandering through Bhool Bhulaiya and Bara Imambara Lucknow

Lucknow city was on my bucket list for quite some time. But the obvious reason was its delicious kababs and biriyani. I finally made a plan to visit Lucknow Uttar Pradesh during our Christmas holiday last year. When I searched for the best places to visit in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh over the internet, I was awestruck. I never imagined Lucknow city to be full of wonders. One place that got me hooked is Bara Imambara Lucknow which also probably takes the first place among the famous places to visit in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh.

Bara Imambara Lucknow along with Bhool Bhulaiya is the most astonishing monument built by the Nawabs of the Oudh dynasty. Constructed in the 14th century, Bara Imambara Lucknow has become the symbol of the city over time.

Even if you have only a few hours in hand, the only thing you should do in Lucknow city apart from eating is to see Bara Imambara and Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow.

History of Bara Imambara Lucknow

Aasifi mosque, the imambara, shahi baoli – the royal bath of bara imambara lucknow, decrypting the puzzle of bhool bhulaiya lucknow, things to keep in mind before visiting bara imambara lucknow, how to reach bara imambara lucknow:.

We caught an early morning flight to Lucknow Uttar Pradesh. After checking into our hotel, we headed straight to finish our brunch with some of Lucknow’s local delicacies. According to the google map, we were just 700 meters walk away from the Bara Imambara Lucknow. So, we decided to walk through the chaotic lanes of Lucknow city. We passed the oldest flower market in Lucknow city on our way.

When we reached, we realized the google map navigated us to the backside of the Bara Imambara Lucknow. Are we becoming slaves of technology when we could have easily asked a local on the way?

None the less even the backside view of the enormous building was enough to motivate us to walk another 1.5 KM to the entry gate of Bara Imambara Lucknow.

On the way to Bara Imambara Lucknow, we spotted a quiet park that gives us an excellent view of Bada Imambara Lucknow (which we later realized is not the Imambara, but the Aasifi Mosque housed within the same premise of Bara Imambara Lucknow). We took some rest and clicked few pictures.

Bara Imambara Lucknow   has a fascinating history behind its construction. In the 18th century, Lucknow city was hit by a devastating famine that lasted more than 10 years. To ease people’s pain and create more job opportunities, the ruling Nawab Asif-Ud-Daula commissioned the construction of Bara Imambara Lucknow. His instructions were clear. Reduce the cost of construction by using cheaper, local goods and employ only locals. Kifayat-Ullah, a famous Persian architect of that era, designed the entire building with common materials like limestone, rice husk, pulses. No woods and metals were used anywhere in the entire premise. There are no beams to support the high walls of Bara Imambara Lucknow. To strengthen the building, the genius architect came with a brilliant idea. He made the walls hollow and built domes of different sizes and heights in place of the flattened ceiling. This led to the creation of a series of beautifully decorated archways that can be appreciated from the inside and the accidental creation of Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow. Commoners worked hard to build during the day. And. during the night, nobles and royal descendants worked hard to break the sections of unfinished buildings which they didn’t like. The kindhearted Nawab paid both. Despite such challenges, Bara Imambara Lucknow is considered one of the strongest monuments even today. Fascinating, right?

My Encounter with Bara Imambara Lucknow

After crossing Rumi Darwaza, walk for another 150 meters and the entrance of the Bara Imambara Lucknow is on the right. But this small stretch of the walk was very difficult for us to cross. At every step, 10 different people stopped us to offer various “touristy” services like horse cart rides, tourist guides, tour guides, etc. to show you the 5 best places in Lucknow city in as low as 50 rupees (less than a US dollar). But don’t fall for them. Only registered guides are allowed inside Bara Imambara Lucknow. 

We got the shock of the day after entering. Cameras and tripods are not allowed inside Bara Imambara Lucknow. However, you can take pictures from your phone. Thankfully Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a government body in charge of maintaining this place along with many other historical monuments across the country, runs a cloakroom at the entrance.

A perfectly landscaped garden and a few souvenir shops welcomed us inside the premise of Bara Imambara Lucknow. You don’t need any ticket to enter this section.

A second entrance and ticket counter are just across the garden. I loved how the entrance of Bara Imambara Lucknow is decorated with flowerpots.

The entire complex comprises Bara Imambara, Aasifi Mosque, Bhool Bhulaiya, and a stepwell.

Aasifi mosque will be on your right after entering through the gate. Legend has that the British tried to weaken the mosque wall by sipping water through its wall. They still couldn’t break. Non-followers of Islam are not allowed inside the mosque. We spend some time appreciating its beauty from the outside. People still come to Aasifi Mosque to offer prayers. Please be respectful while visiting.

Then we headed to the main attraction on the premise, Bara Imambara Lucknow. The Imambara is a religious shrine for Shia Muslims where the procession of the Muharram festival starts from or end since the time of Nawabs. The tradition continues till today. You have to remove your shoes before entering the building.

Bara Imambara Lucknow has three 3 large halls. The central hall, constructed in Persian style, is said to be one of the largest halls in the world.

I liked the soothing effect of the mint-colored wall and Persian interiors inside Bara Imambara Lucknow. Seems like the Nawabs were stung by the recent obsessions of pastel colors 300 years back.

The central hall of Bara Imambara Lucknow also houses the tomb of its architect Kifayat-Ullah and its creator Nawab Asif-Ud-Daula.

The other two halls were designed in Chinese and Indian architecture. Honestly, I did not find much difference in the interior style. Nonetheless, they are exquisitely beautiful.

Our next stop within the premise is Shahi Baoli – a royal step well. A seven-storeyed stepwell was built to create a water source for the palace. The architecture is quite similar to the architecture of Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow and gives an illusion of climbing down while climbing up. There are certain windows from where the reflection of the entry door can be seen in the water but not the other way around. It was made for the royal guard to keep an eye on all the visitors so that they can prepare for any unwanted visitor. Our guide called it CCTV technology of the Nawabs.

Legend has that when the British were successful to win Lucknow city over the Nawabs, Nawab’s prime minister hid all the wealth in a secret location inside the Bhool Bhulaiya and dropped the key and map to find the treasure in the Baoli. The British tried to find it again and again but couldn’t. Not sure how much true the stories are, but we had a good time listening to all these fascinating stories.

Lost in the mazes of Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow

Our next stop was Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow. Legend has the Bhul Bhulaiya Lucknow has 1000 entries and but just one exit. If you don’t know the way out, you will be stuck here for the rest of your life.

The entrance of the Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow is adjacent to the Bara Imambara. You will find ASI-approved guides right at the entrance. A guide is mandatory for couples to enter Bhul Bhulaiya Lucknow and the rate is just 100 rupees for two. Our guide offered to show us around the Shahi Baoli and the Imambara if we give him 50 rupees more. Though we already visited the Imambara, I couldn’t resist knowing what conspired behind building such a magnificent building in less than a dollar.

Our guide was a cheerful man. He told many stories about Bara Imambara and Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow with so much enthusiasm and drama. 

The hollow walls and domes of different sizes and heights that gave required support for keeping the Bara Imambara Lucknow accidentally created a maze of hallways inside the crypt. Later, this became the best defence mechanism of Nawabs what we all know as Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow. Smart move, right?

A few secret chambers and a series of stairs were built inside the hollow walls and domes. To reach the highest chamber one must climb up and down different domes. Thus, it makes an illusion of climbing down when you are actually climbing up to the higher chambers. The guards used to keep an eye on the happenings inside the halls of Imambara through secret windows.

“Do you know even the walls have ears?” Our guide asked dramatically. Then he went far from us and whispered and surprisingly we could hear what he said. He told us with a smile that’s how Nawabs prevented anyone plotting against him. The reason is the hollow walls are good conductors of sound. A smart design for the 18th century.

I was running to keep pace with our guide inside the crypt. Finally, when we reached the terrace of Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow, our guide gave us some free time to enjoy the view. The view of the Aasifi mosque, entrance gates, and the skyline of Lucknow city adorned with intricately designed arches and domes rather than concrete buildings from the terrace of Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow are spectacular.

Then, our guide challenged us to solve the puzzle of the labyrinth. But we surrendered within 5 mins.

Location: here Bara Imambara Timings: 6 am – 5 pm Bara Imambara Lucknow Ticket Price: A combined ticket including Bara Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Shahi Baoli, Chota Imambara , Picture Gallery, Shahi Hamam costs 50 INR for Indians, 500 INR (~ 7 USD) for Foreigners The minimum time required to visit Bara Imambara Lucknow: 2-3 hours Bara Imambara Guide Cost: Standard rates which are regulated by the Govt will be on display at the ticket counter. The guide took 150 INR (~ 2 USD) for two of us for all three monuments except the mosque.

Lucknow city is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh in the northern section of India. It is easily accessible by trains, flights, and roads with the other major cities in India. Once in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh, you can take an auto-rickshaw or cab to reach Bara Imambara Lucknow. If you are new to this part of the world, I would advise you to go through a comprehensive guide for Lucknow city before landing.

I would recommend keeping 2 days in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh to try out all that Lucknow city has to offer. Don’t forget to read 2 days itinerary of Lucknow India with the best places to eat and the best places to visit in Lucknow city.

If you have just a few hours or a day in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh, I would highly recommend squeeze in some time for its younger cousin, Chota Imambara Lucknow .

Bara Imambara – Lucknow’s famous Bhool Bhulaiya

  The iconic Structure of the Bara Imambara – Lucknow’s famous Bhool Bholaiya

Bara Imambara or Asafi Imambara is a large tomb complex in Lucknow. Bara means big and Imambara is a sacred hall for conducting Muslim rituals especially for Shia Muslims around Muharram . It was built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula , the then Nawab of Awadh . It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lucknow. What makes it special is that it is a labyrinth of a thousand inter-connected passages.

It was built in 1784 by Asaf-ud-Daula , the then Nawab of Awadh . The construction of this entire structure is unique. It was built with Lucknowi brick and lime plaster without any use of wood or metal. This structure consists of three parts –  Asifi Mosque ,  Bouli  (or a step well) and a Labyrinth (Bhool Bhulaiya) . A Labyrinth is a maze that consist of a path that leads into multiple paths which in turn lead to more paths.

This labyrinth or bhool bhoolaiya is three-dimensional and was constructed to support the weight of the structure as it’s built on marshy land. This is said to be the only existing labyrinth in India.

Legend has it that the now sealed underground tunnels “supposedly” connect all the way to the main City

According to our guide, “supposedly” there are underground mile-long tunnels that connect all to way to near the  Gomti River as well as in other parts of the city. But to prevent their misuse it’s been sealed. This remains a mystery still however the legend remains.

Pro Tip: Its better to hire a guide to find an easy way out of the bhool bhoolaiya . Moreover, the tidbits and anecdotes they share are really intriguing.

One side of the Bara Imambara houses the step well or the Bouli . There are multiple that lead to the water level. The construction of the well is such that the reflection of the main gate is seen in the water that could alarm the watch keeping guards. This worked like our present-day security cameras.

This large tomb complex was constructed as a noble cause. In 1785, Awadh was hit with a devastating famine and to generate employment for the people in his empire Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula decided to build this magnificent structure. The construction was completed in 1791. What started as a famine relief measure turned out to be an iconic landmark for Lucknow.

The Nawab then invited bids from all over the kingdom and an architect Kifayatulla from Shahjahanabad won the bid and the construction began. Interestingly the tombs of both Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula and Kifayatulla are located in the central hall of the Bara Imambara .

Who were the  Nawabs ?

What is an imambara , history of bhool bhulaiya, so why was bhool bhulaiya built.

• Timing : The I mambada opens at 6am, though the Bhool Bhulaiya opens only at 9am. Reach a little before 9 and explore the entire complex as there are many more places to see and photograph. Interestingly each has its own unique story.
• Guide : I guess its fun to hire a guide, though I would not advice on trusting all that they say. They are not expensive and depend on tourist to make a living, and I guess that’s what pushes them to talk more about the legends than actual history.
• Photography : It’s one the best places to photograph in the city, especially if you love architecture photography. I took all the pics using just my i Phone  but I think they would be way better if you could use a DSLR.
• What to carry? A small backpack with camera, chocolates and water would be sufficient for the trip. You can be done within 2-3 hours though I recommend spending much more time there.

Hari OM Fabulous - what adds to the beauty is actually the rain - gives a depth of colour often missing in the heat! BB is a 'maze', as there are many channels, points of exit and entry and potential to get lost. Labyrinths have one central way, a single entry/exit point and the confusion only comes by the number of rooms which it may contain; but due to one central channel, one cannot actually get lost in a labyrinth - it is a common misunderstanding though. Whichever - it is very beautiful!!! YAM xx

I lived in Lucknow as a kid, for five years in 1944. I still remember my days there. I have vivid memories of bada imambara with bhool bhulayaan, chota imambada, chatar manzil and the zoo at Banarsi bagh. After 68 years, I'm again getting a chance to revive my memories of Lucknow as my niece's wedding is in Lucknow. I am excitedly waiting for this trip.

The Bhool Bhulaiya Myth at Bada Imambara in Lucknow

A part of Lucknow’s Bara Imambara is known as Bhool Bhulaiya. The “Bhool Bhulaiya” is made up of over 1,000 passageways and 489 identical entrances.

Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula chose to construct the center hall with no supporting columns. He wished to build a large mosque for collective worship.

According to legend, a famine struck Lucknow , affecting people’s livelihoods. Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daulah then commissioned the Bada Imambara. This aided the poor in their daily wages. Even though he was intelligent, he did not overlook the noblemen. Their task began at night, and it was to dismantle whatever had been erected during the day. This aided in keeping work moving, and what may have taken less time took 10 years or more to complete. This eternal landmark today represents a great balancing act.

What is an Imambara?

“Bara” means “large,” and “Imambara” refers to a Shia Muslim shrine. The Shrine is mostly for the Muharrum festival, during which Shia Muslims remember the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson. The Muharrum procession finishes at the Imambara, which was erected in the 1780s by the Nawab of Awadh, Asaf-Ud-Daulah. The Bada Imambara complex encompasses far more than just the Imambara. It comprises the Asafi Mosque, a stepwell known as the Shahi Baoli, and Lucknow’s famed labyrinth, Bhool Bhulaiya.

Important Things about Bhool Bhulaiya

• If you have earlier heard about the Bhool bhulaiya myths . You might have heard about people going in and never coming back. But the local guides do tell that it is possible to go in and come out. There are just some tricks.
• As you enter the labyrinth, the guide will lead you up 45 stairs. This is where the excursion to Bhul Bhulaiya begins. The guide will then lead you through several passageways and corridors. He also shows the secret tunnel that leads to Delhi. Throughout, he will provide you intriguing anecdotes and information about the location.
• There are no beams to support the lofty ceilings. In fact, the Bara Imambara is regarded as one of the greatest arched constructions in the world.

How to reach bhool bhulaiya.

From every city in India, Lucknow is easily accessible by road and train. There are several daily flights to Lucknow. After arriving in Lucknow , you can take a rickshaw or a cab to Bara Imambara. If you intend to ride the metro, the following stations for Bara Imambara should be considered.

– Alambagh metro station

– Charbagh metro station

– Durgapuri metro station

All of these metro stations are within 3 kilometers of the landmark Bhool Bhulaiya . To go from the metro to Bara Imambara, you can take one of the local automobiles or cabs.

Timings and Entry Fee

The Bhool Bhulaiya is closed on Mondays and is open on all other days of the week. The timings for the rest of he days is 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

The entry fee is as following:

Rs.50 per person for adults, Rs.20 per person for Children, Rs.300 per person for Foreigners

Rs.100 Guide charges for two people

Rs. 10 for Digital Camera, Rs. 25 for Video Camera

The bhool-bhulaiya of Lucknow - Bada Imambara

Tourists from all over the world come to ‘Imambara’ and it is the most visited place in Lucknow. This beautiful heritage architecture encompasses in itself mysteries and histories worth delving into. Every stone within this monument holds a secret. It is called as the ‘bhool-bhulaiya’ meaning labyrinth. It was built by the fourth Nawab of the Awadh Province, Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula. It took fourteen years to complete this structure. It was built with a noble intention. When famine struck the Awadh estate, the Nawab thought of building this structure, which will generate employment as well as provide food to people in return for their services. It was designed by the Architect Hafiz Kifayat Ullah. There are three halls in the Imambara. The central hall has the tomb of Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula.

The minute you enter the place, you get the feels of the Nawabi era. You see these gigantic structures all around you and you imagine the kind of life they had in the era of the kings and queens. The kind of carvings and the design pattern just take you by surprise. This whole structure does not have a single pillar or beam. That information is enough to marvel you at the engineering of those times and the fact that they still stand strong and tall, is commendable. When you see people walking out of the Imambara, you see trails of awe and astonishment on their face. It is advisable to ask for a guide when you start your journey into the ‘bhool-bhulaiya’, but if you want to test your skills and instincts, then you would want to take a risk and go in without a guide. Since there are many people exploring at the same time and you get lost, you could follow them if they have a guide and pay the guide later.

Best time to visit Bada Imambara

Winters are the best time to explore the Imambara because it gets suffocating in the summers. When you reach the top level, it is a bliss, but if you visit in the summer, the heat will bother you. So, it’s better to make a visit in the winter.

Few amazing facts about the ‘Imambara’

The ‘Bhool-bhulaiya’ has more than 1,000 passages and around 489 identical doorways. If you take a guide, he lets you guess which of the four doorways is the right door. The experience just gets better when you guess the right one and the guide asks you to chant with him the bhool-bhulaiya’s famous funny rant which goes something like this- “ Chaar raaste bhoot. Ek rasta sach, teen raste bhool-bhulaiya.” But if you guess the wrong door, he lets you climb those stairs while he waits down and you realise that it takes you further down instead of going up. It surprises you at every turn.

When you are walking along the long passages with doorways at frequent intervals, you also come across the central hall. You can enter the hall from outside the bhool-bhulaiya too, but when you take the long passages, you end up in the balconies of the central hall.

This hall is built with amazing techniques. When you stand at one end of the hall’s balcony, the guide goes to the other end of the balcony to show you an amazing thing. He lights a match from that end and you can hear him light it so precisely at this end. This is possible because of the grooves created in the ceiling. They allow the sound to travel from one end to the other. It is indeed a wonder creation!

The complete structure is designed in such a way that it provides great ventilation. It has vents in the wall at frequent intervals that let air and light pass in. These are the vents that allow different views of the main gate and helps to keep a track of the happenings of the outside world.

The walls of the passages are built with great wit. The guide asks you to lean on the wall with your ears keenly pressed against the wall, while he walks a long distance ahead and whispers something into the wall from his position. It will surprise you how you can hear every word that he whispers. It’s not that he says it loud enough for it to be heard otherwise. He walks really far enough and literally whispers into the wall. They say, this was how people overheard the conversations back in those times.

When you finally reach the top level of the ‘Imambara’, it’s breathtaking. You can see the whole of Lucknow at once. You can see the Rumi Darwaja, Asifi Masjid , the Husainabad Clock Tower and every other monument that stands there. It is a beautiful experience. You will be in awe for the kind of beauty that you beheld.

A major attraction, Bhool Bhulaiya, is a part of huge structure (Bara Imambara) in Lucknow. Bhool Bhulaiya is a labyrinth of hundreds of narrow stairway passages, some of which have dead-ends, some end at precipitous drops while others lead to entrance or exit points. One should always take a Guide to explore Bhool Bhulaiya Lucknow. The Bhool Bhulaiya was constructed to confuse any enemy intruder. The narrow lanes of the labyrinth can make anyone feel lost. The king and other few only knew the way out. The Bada ImamBara is said to be the world's largest arched room without any pillars. The bhool bhulaiya in the building is three storeyed. It is surrounded with 489 doorless similar galleries, where one can roam endlessly for hours. This is why it is so mysterious. The structure contains various strategically built hollows in the corridors. There is also a blocked passageway which, according to legends, leads through a mile-long underground passage to a location near the Gomti river. In short, it is simple in style but mysterious too.

Although a historic structure, the bhool bhulaiya of Lucknow continues to bewitch and entrap visitors with its mysterious alleys and passages. If you translate the term Bool Bhulaiya, it means a maze that tests your mental alertness as you try to come out of it. There are about a thousand such passageways and most of them lead you nowhere but another passage.

Bada Imambara

Let me tell you, this place is so unique in itself that every tourist is surprised to see it. There are four ways around this maze, three are wrong and one is right. There are 15 feet thick walls and two and a half feet wide path, when tourists go to this maze, they feel like walking in these walls.

It is said about this, the soldiers of the Nawabs could see the main door of Imambara and Bhool Bhulaiya from these windows, but when you look at these windows from below, you will not see anything above. Agreed, you will only see darkness when you look at the windows from below.

The surprising thing is that every evening the people who have gone astray are taken out from inside through the search operation. History of Bhul Bhulaiya

Bhul Bhulaiya is the Bada Imambaras labyrinth and the most magnificent part of it. 

Every year many people travel to Lucknow to see the Bhulbhulaiya. 

Lucknow was previously known as Avadh. 

In 1784, Avadh was hit by devastating famine and due to this, the people were forced to live in utter poverty.

Food was scarce for both royal families and common people.

During the period, Asaf-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, commissioned the building of Bara Imambara in order to produce income for the impoverished and unemployed. 

The famine lasted about a decade, and so did the construction.

The Nawab employed around 20,000 individuals to build the spectacular Imambara.

The vast and majestic structure was completed after nearly a decade of development.

It is also known as the Asafi Imambara and is a center of prayer for Shia Muslims.

They congregate in the Imambara for various events, particularly Muharram.

Many of them believe that Bhool Bhaliya was constructed by architects from Persia (modern-day Iran), a renowned Shia state at the time, but the truth is slightly different.

When the Nawab decided to construct the massive structure, he invited bids, and it was won by Hafiz Kifayat Ullah, a well-known architect from Shahjahanabad (modern-day old Delhi) at the time.

He started working on the structure in 1784 and was completed fourteen years later.

The architects worked for days, weeks, and months on the Bada Imambara and the other buildings in the complex including the mosque and the step-well.

The Central Hall (170ft x 55ft) was built without columns for prayer reasons!

It’s a massive structure, and conventional construction would have required columns to support the load of the ceiling, including the massive dome.

Unlike modern buildings, tremendous care was taken to design even this part of the Imambara as magnificently as the rest of it.

As a result, there is a maze of interconnected tunnels and doorways.

There are approximately a thousand such passageways, and each channel leads from one way to the other.

Many of these tunnels lead to windows with magnificent views of the outside world, and some lead to the terrace.

Bhool Bhaliya cannot be imagined without the Bara Imambara.

It was for the Imamabara, the idea of Bhool Bhaliya clicked in the mind of the architect, Kifayatullah!

Architecture of Bhul Bhulaiya

Bhul Bhulaiya is the iconic attraction in Lucknow with its stunning architecture. 

It is also a significant part of Lucknow’s Bara Imambara.

The entire Imambara, with its massive courtyard, is a spectacular sight to behold.

The maze-like network of numerous passageways and identical doors is fascinating.

Nawab Asaf-ud Daula planned to build the central hall without any supporting columns as he desired it to be huge (170 ft by 55 ft by 15 ft) in which people may pray together.

Traditional construction methods were not deployed for building the hall since such a massive structure would necessitate supporting columns to support the load of the ceiling and the massive dome.

The architect of Bara Imambara, Kifayatullah, had a brilliant idea to construct the ceiling hollow to lower its weight. 

And thus, was born Bhul Bhulaiya !

It was designed to accommodate the central hall’s design. 

The Bhul Bhulaiya in Bara Imambara in Lucknow is a maze of intricately interwoven passageways. 

The entire structure was built in a unique style. 

There are strategically positioned windows to ensure adequate ventilation and sunlight during the day. 

All of this was done while keeping the structure of the Imambara’s palatial Central Hall in mind.

There are multiple narrow tunnels, yet they are all adequately ventilated allowing sufficient light and air to enter the hall.

There are about 1000 passages and 489 similar doorways here.

All the stunning architecture depicts intriguing tales and exemplifies an architectural masterpiece. 

Tour of Bhul Bhulaiya

As you enter the labyrinth, you will be routed towards 45 stairs. The tour to Bhul Bhulaiya begins from these staircases. 

You can then pass through several passageways and corridors. 

It is very easy to get lost in the labyrinth and it may take some time to find your way out.

There are some tricks and trips to find the way out. If you hire a guide, they can reveal those secrets to you.

There are a few passageways that are blocked. The ceilings and dimly illuminated passages create an ominous atmosphere.

You can also go to the building’s roof.

The terrace, with its beautifully crafted windows called jharokha, is a lovely spot. 

The entire facility can be seen from the rooftop.

You can also see the Rumi Darwaza, Asifi Masjid, Hussainabad Clock Tower, and a beautiful view of Lucknow by the Gomti River, from the top.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

The Bara Imambara is among the grandest buildings of Lucknow. It is an Imambara complex. Also known as Asafi Imambara, it was built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. Its central hall is said to be the largest vaulted chamber in the world. It is an architectural marvel and a must visit place for tourists. It is also known as Bhool Bhulaiya (Labyrinth) because the hundreds of stairway passages can make you lose your mind, as some end at dead points and some at exit. It's not easy to find your way once you are lost here. These passages were made to confuse the enemy intruder.

Rumi Darwaza

It's a 60 feet high gate constructed under Asaf-ud-Daula in 1786. It is one of the architectural wonders of that era.

Situated in the heart of the city, Hazratganj is a shopping area and has many restaurants, theatres and shopping complex.

British Residency

It used to be a complex of buildings for British residents during 1700-1800. The place is a mesmerizing place of history. Many events took place here during the fight for Independence in 1857. The museum depicts the history of treatment of Indians by Britishers during those events.

Bhool Bhulaiya, Lucknow: Why you should visit this place?

Long time back in the 2000s when I was google illiterate, I thought bhool bhulaiya was one open garden with walls and doors. (made up of leaves, I don’t know why I imagined something like that) Remember the sort of maze we had in video games? Something similar! I reallllllly do not know why I did not google it anytime earlier. So, when I finally googled it, I realised it is not even near to my imagination. You can see the picture below.

As a kid, I heard a lot of stories about the bhool bhulaiya. Stories of how people lost their way and never came back. Stories on why and how the Government decided to close down a lot of doors. Of course, the place is full of stories – some real, some fictitous. Let me tell you some and lets have fun.

The labyrinth is built inside of Bada Imambada and is indeed a very complicated structure. I wonder how the workforce did not disappear while constructing this over complicated building, any thoughts? The history of the structure is quite interesting to read. So, let me tell you some convince you to visit this place  at least once. I know that I have already  covered this in the top 3 places to visit in Lucknow . But, I also remember telling you that I will be dedicating an entire post to this. Here it is!

When you finally reach the terrace, its completely worth it! You can see the whole of Lucknow, Rumi Darwaza, Asifi Masjid, Clock tower, Jama Masjid and all the monuments in and around! It perfect for photographers too!

So, I guess its fun to hire a guide. They aren’t expensive. There are boards everywhere which displays the rate of the guide. So, you will not to be cheated.

• What time is it open?  9 AM to 7 PM.
• What to carry? Camera, water and something to munch on if you want. You can be done within 2-3 hours though.
• What time to go? Evenings. Avoid going in summers!
