ABOUT TARJA:

The brightest star of the symphonic rock scene, Tarja Turunen is certainly the most internationally well-known Finnish voice in the world of music. Soprano, composer and songwriter, she reached international fame co-founding and being for nine years the voice and image of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, collecting with them Gold and Platinum Record Awards in several countries.

The unique combination of metal music with Tarja’s soprano lead vocals gave birth to a new genre, quickly achieving critical and commercial popularity and inspiring many other metal bands and performers. But singing only somebody else’s creations was not her destiny, and her talent could fully bloom only outside that crate. Tarja had to walk alone.

Finally free to follow her own inspirations, heart, and dreams, Tarja started her own solo career successfully devoted to both classical and rock music.

Tarja was nominated for the Emma Award in Finland in 2006 and 2007 and for the Echo Award in Germany in 2007, and she is the first Finnish solo artist to achieve a Gold Record in Germany and even more, the only one to do it both in a band and as solo artist. In 2015 and 2016 she was also busy starring as coach in two seasons of The Voice of Finland, which is the most watched TV-program from Channel 4 in Finland and leading her team to victory for two years in a row, something that never happened before in the history of the Finnish show.

After over fifteen years of a solo career, it was finally time to celebrate. The Best of Tarja, Living the Dream, combines the best and most beloved songs from Tarja’s prolific solo career in one outstanding package.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS

Living the dream tour, track listing:.

Slash is a household name to the same extent as GUNS N' ROSES is. Simply put, the man who is inextricably linked with the image of his black top hat and face-concealing long, curly hair is one of the greatest figures in the history of rock 'n' roll. The living legend is back in the spotlight with "Living The Dream Tour" , a DVD/CD combo that was culled from his band's early 2019 London performance. The show that's captured is a two-hour set of tracks from all four of Slash 's solo albums, entailing go-to numbers like "Call Of The Wild" , "Back From Cali" , "World On Fire" and "Anastasia" . What matters most is that the release is captivating because it truly pulls listeners in, to the point that one almost feels like they're attending the show because the recording encompasses all of the details, warts and all.

As much as the iconic guitarist proves himself with a reliably impressive performance, vocalist Myles Kennedy proves his worth with his dramatic take on classic and timeless rock. The rest of THE CONSPIRATORS — including drummer Brent Fitz , bassist/vocalist Todd Kerns , and guitarist/vocalist Frank Sidoris — offer stellar contributions, but there's no doubt that they essentially serve as the foundation upon which Slash and Kennedy have the opportunity to shine. And the duo most certainly capitalizes on what is clearly Slash 's most succinct solo offering yet; one that eschews the admirably adventurous yet meandering expressions that were abundant on his earlier solo material.

"Living The Dream Tour" , the first release since Slash actually rejoined GUNS N' ROSES , is chock-full of his signature, sensual, hard-hitting groove and one-of-a-kind solos that hang for days upon extended notes. It's enjoyable, and, at times, desirably reminiscent of GUNS N' ROSES ' debut — most notably on the grimy track "Boulevard Of Broken Hearts" — yet it is simply too safe. The Slash that we know and love is supposed to be unhinged and chaotic. Perhaps that's an unfair desire from the fanbase's vantage point, but then again it makes sense considering the core nature and value of the artist that was clearly established decades ago.

For longtime GUNS N' ROSES diehards, "Living The Dream Tour" will be an overdue quenching of the thirst for that band's classic, early work. The style and sound has been repurposed through modern aesthetics, as with the contemporary yet timeless "Slow Grind" and "Serve You Right" , predominantly attributable to Slash 's more mature station in life. So, invariably, there is less excitement compared to what Slash initially offered in GUNS N' ROSES ' early days. But even then, "Living The Dream Tour" is a tasteful hard rock effort that's clearly head and shoulders above the competition.

Dream Theater on Emotional Mike Portnoy Reunion, First 40th Anniversary Tour Dates

By Kory Grow

Mike Portnoy cannot remember the last time he sat for an interview as a member of Dream Theater , the band he left in 2010. And nobody in the prolific prog-metal band can remember the last time all five musicians took part in an interview together. The drummer, who returned to the band last year, says he’s looking forward to it, though, as he finds a seat between guitarist John Petrucci and vocalist James LaBrie in the live room of the group’s Long Island, New York studio/HQ.

“We didn’t do group interviews for a while,” Petrucci tells Rolling Stone .

“The more people you have involved in an interview,” LaBrie says, “It can be a problem.” He smiles and deadpans, “See you later,” and stands up. But then he settles back into his seat, and it’s clear the group feels reinvigorated after Portnoy’s return.

When asked what they’ve been up to, Petrucci says, “Specifically this,” and plays an angular guitar riff, smiling. In addition to the album, they’re in the first stages of planning what will be their 40th anniversary tour (even though 2024 is Dream Theater’s 39th year), which kicks off in Europe in October. The first date will take place at London’s O2 Arena on Oct. 20, and the full routing is below the Q&A. But even a year early, the trek is a victory lap for the band.

To accommodate the drummer and his apartment-sized kit, they refurbished their whole HQ, which looks like an unassuming warehouse in suburban Long Island, expanding their main studio since, quite frankly, all of his drums wouldn’t fit. For nearly two months now, they’ve been spending six days a week together, sometimes working 10 hours a stretch. “We’re deep in the process, but it’s been great,” Portnoy says.

“We are on our sixth song,” Petrucci says. “We’re still in the process, so we don’t know how many songs we’ll actually have.” About a week after the Rolling Stone interview, though, Portnoy posted to Instagram that he had finished recording his drum tracks for the album. As each of the five musicians says during an interview that lasts a little over an hour, Portnoy’s return was meant to be.

Mike Portnoy Pays Tribute to Neil Peart: 'One of My Greatest Heroes'

Dream theater talk recording in the catskills and their heavy new lp, dream theater's jordan rudess remembers keith emerson: 'he was my idol'.

James LaBrie: What was evident to each of us was there was a familiarity. The chemistry was there. It was like somebody threw me in a time warp. It’s like we picked up from where we left off [with him].

Why did the four of you want Mike to return? LaBrie: I think we had to return the band back to its strongest form.

Petrucci: It wasn’t one singular thing; it was sort of a series of life events that caused an organic conclusion. We all talked about it. It was like, “Yeah, this makes sense right now.”

Jordan Rudess: There’s so many factors involved, and each of us has our particular relationships. And it was just a moment when everything seemed to come together, and we went, “You know what? Let’s do this. Now’s the time.”

John Myung: It was a collective moment of certainty.

Petrucci: That sounds like an album title. [ All laugh ].

Mike, did it surprise you when they invited you back into the band? Portnoy: Before the Covid pandemic, if you had asked me or any of these guys, “Was a reunion in the cards?” I probably would’ve said, “I doubted that it could happen.” I think if the lockdown hadn’t happened, you guys probably would’ve been on tour, and I would’ve been on tour with one of my 48 bands.

But once we were all locked down, John asked me to play on his solo album. Then, from there, Jordan, John, and myself did the Liquid Tension Experiment album. And then I did John’s tour. So there were just these series of events of reconnecting us — not only on a musical level but also on a personal level for many years prior to that.

All of our families are friends. And my daughter and John’s daughter shared an apartment together for many, many years. And John Myung lives right down the block from me, and his wife’s at my house every night. There was just a series of events both personally and musically that started to feel like, “Well, maybe this really is in the cards. Maybe this is the right time.”

Petrucci: When Mike left the band, it was traumatic for all of us. We had to figure out how we were going to move our career forward. And those years that went by, they were also healing years because you don’t just have something like that happen, and all of a sudden, you’re all best buddies a week later. There’s some trauma there that had to heal. Thirteen years was enough time for that to happen and be like, “Hey, you know what, man? We love each other like we’re brothers.”

How did you all move past the war of words in the press? Petrucci: I don’t think it matters anymore.

Portnoy: Well, now it definitely doesn’t matter anymore. But no question, the first couple of years [after I left], it was dramatic. It was difficult on a personal level, and living in the age of social media didn’t help things because every single interview or comment got twisted and blown up and dissected and taken out of context. But once I saw each of these guys individually before we got back as a band, to me, all that bullshit and drama melted away.

[ Portnoy turns to LaBrie ]. I don’t know if it’s uncomfortable to talk about, but the last person I reconnected with was James. I’ll speak for myself, but when we finally connected, and we saw each other in person, all that shit just melted away within seconds.

How was that moment for you, James? LaBrie: It was pretty intense. It was overwhelming for me because, for one, I was thinking about the show that night. It was at the Beacon Theatre in New York. And for two, there’s this guy that wants to meet me that is my brother, and I have to accept him back into my life. And it was very emotional because we had gone through what we had gone through.

Did you have doubts about seeing him again? LaBrie: To be honest with you, I called my wife, and I said, “Mike’s here. He wants to see me.” And she said, “You got to do it because this is your brother. This is somebody that created who and what you are today. Move through it, and you’ll be happier. Take the monkey off your fucking back.”

Mike, that Beacon show was your first time seeing Dream Theater. What did you think? Portnoy: It sucked without me. [ All laugh ]. Well, I wasn’t watching them to be critical; it was more of just an emotional thing. But it was surreal seeing the band since the three of us formed the band when we were teenagers. We formed it at Berklee College of Music when we were 18 years old, and we had 25 years together before I left the band. So it was weird to be on the other side of the stage hearing “Pull Me Under” and on top of it all, it was magnified by the fans. They saw me sitting there watching the band. I was trying to not bring any attention to myself, but it was hard with a blue beard sticking out from my hood.

LaBrie: I brought attention to the fact.

Portnoy: Yeah, James pointed me out. I was like, “Oh, man, thanks a lot.”

How did watching the show make you feel? Portnoy: I’d be lying if I didn’t say that it made me miss the band. During those 13 years, I would watch from the sidelines, just kind of keeping tabs. I didn’t really stay fully involved with what these guys were doing because, honestly, it hurt. They’d put out a new album, and I would always listen to it once or twice, just out of curiosity. But it was painful. So it took me many, many years to be able to go see a Dream Theater show.

How did Mike Mangini take the news that you were inviting Mike Portnoy back? Petrucci: He understood immediately the move that we were making. And he accepted it and welcomed that change in a really gracious way.

LaBrie: It felt right to him.

Petrucci: It made this whole process start on a positive note.

Mike, are there songs from the Mangini albums they made without you that you’d like to play live? Petrucci: I don’t think he knows any of them. [ All laugh ].

Portnoy: One of the things we discussed with me coming back was about set lists for future tours. And John and the guys were open to me taking the reins back [in making them]. But with that came the discussion: what are we going to do with all the stuff from the last 13 years?

Petrucci: Yeah, you need to research.

Petrucci: No, absolutely not. Especially not the Grammy Award-winning [“The Alien”]. Did I just say that?

Portnoy: Geez.

LaBrie: The irony in that is I don’t want to play that song.

In the past, you’ve done tours billed as “An Evening With Dream Theater,” where you don’t have support acts and you play longer. Is that what this upcoming tour will be? Petrucci: Yeah. And we’re billing it as our 40th-anniversary tour. It coincidentally coincides with us being together for 40 years.

Myung: I got a brainstorm. [ All look ]. We’ll do five nights at Radio City, tonight we’ll do a different album.

Petrucci: You heard it here first. [ Laughs ].

I understand that that may not happen, but it’s nice you’re thinking about these things. Portnoy: For me, it’s exciting to play anything because we haven’t played live together in almost 15 years. Back then, I felt the need to write a different set list for every show because we had been doing it for all those years. We had played “Pull Me Under” a thousand times. But now, having been away from it, every night is going to be inspiring and exciting, at least for me, because we haven’t played it in all this time. There’s literally a generation of kids that never got to see this lineup.

Petrucci: I got that on my solo tour. They were family members who would bring their kids. And they were freaking out because they were like, “I’m so glad my son or daughter got to see you and Mike play together because they weren’t born yet.”

LaBrie: What’s funny about that is when I saw you guys in Toronto, I remember thinking, “Fuck, that’s undeniable.” It’s just like the connection was just boom .

Portnoy: On John’s tour, we’d look out and see grown men crying every single night. And now we’re looking forward to a whole bunch more people crying each and every night. If they were crying for just the two of us, think about what’s going happen when five of us.

Myung: We should sell tissue boxes.

Petrucci: We definitely had the hard conversation like, “OK, this isn’t the same band you left. Things are run differently.” It took us a few years to regroup and figure things out, and we got to a point where we’re a really well-oiled machine. But Mike has been great. He’s way more chill. [ Turns to Portnoy ]. You even say some things that are kind of funny, like, “If I’m allowed to do this.” You don’t have to be that careful, but I appreciate it. I feel like it’s very respectful on his part. It’s like a reset.

Myung: There’s a maturity everybody has. It involves having more patience and just being more mellow and appreciating each other and what we bring. We keep talking about the group dynamic, what it takes to have a bunch of guys together and have it really work and move forward. We just feel that those elements are there to make a great album and to enjoy being together, and to enter this next phase with some real grace.

Does anything feel different musically? Portnoy: Everything we’ve been writing sounds like every classic Dream Theater song or album. The style is here. The chemistry is the same. The people and the elements are the same. It all just feels and sounds so familiar.

Petrucci: There’s maturity in your playing, just the way it hits, the flow, the groove, the feel. It’s always been great, but it’s even better. When we’re cutting a new drum track, it’s just brilliant from the first hit.

Portnoy: Aw, thank you.

Rudess: I think one of the things that makes Dream Theater really loved by the fans is the fact that we try to come from the heart, and we love a good melody. We’re not afraid of playing music that feels emotional. And Mike coming back into the band with who he is and who he is now gives us extra energy.

How will you know when the album is done? Petrucci: There are different factors. A lot of times we’ll base it on how long we want this record to be.

Chris Froome ‘Comes to Reality’ that Winning a Fifth Tour de France is ‘Very, Very Difficult’

Froome reflects on racing vs. pogačar, vingegaard in his prime: 'it would have been interesting to have raced against them in my best years'.

Chris Froome reflected on his Tour de France career, and wondered how he would have fared against the likes of today’s superstars Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard at the peak of his powers.

The years are flying by, and Froome last won the final of his four yellow jerseys in 2017.

That year, Pogačar was racing as an unknown junior and Vingegaard was toiling anonymously as a fish-monger .

Speaking to Eurosport , Froome wondered out loud how he would have fared.

“It would have been really interesting to have raced against them in my best years,” Froome said. “It would have been interesting to see.”

At his prime, Froome and Team Sky ruled the Tour with ruthless efficiency across the decade of the 2010’s.

The once-mighty “Sky Train” plowed the opposition, and then set up Froome for high-voltage attack on the summits before drilling home the winning differences in the time trials.

Sound familiar?

Of the two between Pogačar and Vingegaard, the Dane is perhaps most similar to Froome in profile and racing style.

Backed by the “Killer Bees” at Visma-Lease a Bike, a team that can set the tempo Sky-style, Vingegaard packs the watts to drop everyone on the highest and steepest climbs, and then cements the gains against the clock.

In contrast, Pogačar races more aggressively , and he’s not afraid to uncork long-distance attacks to blow up a race. Sometimes that tactic can backfire against a disciplined and organized front, like it did in the Alps in 2022.

After the Slovenian barnstormed to back-to-back Tour titles, Vingegaard cracked the Pogačar code in 2022, and the Dane’s since won two in a row.

Froome, meanwhile, continues to be dogged by his brutal 2019 crash, and was overlooked for Tour selection by Israel Premier Tech last year.

Winning a 5th Tour ‘is always there as a dream’

Chris Froome

How different is racing today from the Froome Era when he and Team Sky ruled the roads of France?

“It goes in waves. At the moment, it definitely seems to feel like a wave of the [Visma-Lease a Bike] team having won all the grand tours last year,” Froome said. “But cycling is a sport that’s always evolving, always changing, and there will always be new rivals coming up.”

Froome, 38, now freely admits that his days of swinging at the front of the bunch in the hunt for the yellow jersey are long gone.

Currently sidelined with a wrist injury from Tirreno-Adriatico, the Israel Premier Tech rider still holds out the dream of returning to the Tour, but he’s no longer expecting to beat up on the likes of Pogačar or Vingegaard.

“A fifth Tour de France for me is always there as a dream, but I think I’ve come to the reality now that returning to that level of really fighting for victory at the Tour de France is certainly going to be very, very difficult,” said Froome, who missed last year’s Tour selection.

“For me right now, I would just love to get back to the Tour de France,” he said. “Even if I’m there fighting in the mountains, potentially for another stage win, that would be amazing.”

One crash changed everything for Froome in 2019, and he’s seen other riders like Egan Bernal — who won the Tour in 2019 in what was the final yellow jersey in the Sky/Ineos Grenadiers domination — struggle to return to their best from equally devastating crashes.

“It definitely brought my grand tour challenging days to an end,” Froome said of his 2019 crash ahead of the Critérium du Dauphiné time trial. “I found it very difficult to come back to a competitive level.

“But on a more personal, human side, that crash took me months, if not even a full year, to try and recover from that. Just to learn to walk again, to walk normally without limping, took me over a year.

“It had a huge impact on me that crash,” Froome said. “It was really at the worst moment, just before the Tour de France. I was in fantastic shape, hoping to go and fight for the fifth victory at the Tour de France.”

‘I’m grateful to have a second chance’

Chris Froome

Froome watched on in horror at the high-speed crash this month at Itzulia Basque Country that involved Tour de France favorites Remco Evenepoel, Primož Roglič, and Vingegaard, who are all recovering from a series of brutal injuries and face uncertain pathways toward the Tour.

“We’ve seen many serious accidents in the last weeks and months as well, where riders have broken several bones. Unfortunately, it’s a part of the sport,” Froome said. “But that’s life. That’s also part of the sport. It is a dangerous sport. These accidents do happen.

“[Mine] was a big crash, but I’m really glad to be back racing now and to have no pain. I feel extremely grateful to have another chance.”

Froome confirmed that he’s under contract with Israel Premier Tech through 2025, and dreams of returning to the Tour at least one more time.

Of the riders today, he said he’s most impressed with Pogačar.

“I think it’s very rare in this day and age to see one rider really dominating everything the way Eddy Merckx did back in his era,” he said.

“I think the sport’s just evolved so much and become so specific that it’s very hard for someone to be good over all types of terrain,” he said. “That’s one thing that Tadej Pogačar really impresses me in the sense that he’s able to win one-day classics like Flanders or Strade Bianche, and also be there challenging in the grand tours, so it’s very impressive.”

So who would have won in a showdown between the Sky Train and Froome at the peak of his powers versus today’s “Killer Bees” and Pogačar on a rampage?

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Green Accents Transform This SoCal Home and Garden into an Oasis

One couple reimagined this century-old cottage in Southern California as their dream house.

Paige Porter Fischer is a home design scout and editor with more than 20 years of experience. For years she scouted and produced home design stories for Better Homes & Gardens. She's also a regular contributor to Coastal Living, Sunset magazine, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

It’s never too late to find a new favorite color . Shea Watson was devoted to a black-and-white palette for most of her life, until she and her husband, Matt, bought a century-old beach cottage in Southern California that dared her to shake things up.

Going Green

One of the property’s original selling points for the couple was its setting. A short walk from the ocean in Laguna Beach, the cottage was enshrouded in the verdant foliage of olive trees. “We feel like we’re living in a tree house. All we see is green,” Shea says. She trusted interior designer Raili Clasen , who encouraged the couple to “go green” inside the house too.

“I walked into this house and knew right away it was a gem,” Clasen says. “It was magic. It felt like I was stepping into a storybook, and I didn’t want to rewrite its story.” The creaky wood floors, original lead windows, and shiplap-cloaked walls had personality.

Clasen thinks everything in a room needs a visual partner. She chose green as a color base for the Watson’s house, she says, “because it has a best friend outside in all those gorgeous olive trees .” The living room features two vintage chairs, dressed in their original striped upholstery, paired with a leather sofa that will grow more handsome with age.

Clasen recast the home in a way that suited this family of five while honoring the house’s lovely bones. “We basically peeled back a few layers to reveal what was original, and whatever we added back in had to feel like it had been there all along,” she says.

Case in point: The kitchen was wrapped in sheets of faux-marble tile, which Clasen promptly removed and replaced with black leathered granite countertops , a Carrara marble island, and a shiplap backsplash that feel much more authentic. She credits actor and design enthusiast Diane Keaton, who owned the house many years ago, with its perfect lighting. “She chose the same schoolhouse-style light fixture and used it everywhere, and it works.” Clasen kept all of them but one, swapping the light over the island with the Petaluma 2 by Park Studio , a multilight pendant.

“My favorite element of the house is all the windows,” Clasen says. “The light from the kitchen transoms made it possible to go a little darker with the cabinetry.” She chose Sherwin-Williams Ripe Olive for the island and Sheraton Sage for other cabinets. A cactus garden above the upper cabinets draws attention to the lofty ceilings.

The dining room’s bold art—a piece by Jeff Peters the Watsons purchased at a local gallery—queues up many shades of green: citrine, moss, forest, and sage . The casual table and chairs are from Nickey Kehoe . Clasen dressed the end chairs in a playful check.

The bathroom, bathed in natural light, was elongated when Clasen removed a closet to make room for a claw-foot tub and new shower. Lined with hand-painted, cream-and-black tile from Mission Tile West , the shower features a steel-and-glass door that looks vintage.

The wallpaper— Flowerette from CW Stockwell —looks right at home in the primary bedroom, “like we peeled off several layers of wallpaper and discovered this was there waiting for us,” Clasen says. “Shea and Matt love contrasts and don’t shy away from prints.” White wainscoting and shiplap ceilings give relief to the pattern.

When it came to wallpapers, Clasen picked designs that appeared as though they were original to the house. Throughout, she implemented varying olive greens , a color she says is both historical and fresh.

Built in under a bank of windows, the guest bed sports a mix of florals and checks. “Green accents black and white beautifully,” Clasen says. “It’s easy on the eyes.”

A small dose of patterned wallpaper in an unexpected place is one of Clasen’s design signatures and brings built-in shelves to life.

The Watsons chose Mexican tile for the stair risers . The mélange of tiles features patterns that share a shade of green. Perri A., the black-and-white Frenchie, navigates them with ease.

Clasen mixes shades in the laundry room , where the olive green goes a bit mossier. “But we kept to the same color family, so it all worked,” she says. Handmade mustard yellow tiles highlight a green utility sink, olive cabinets, and Cascade Meadow wallpaper in Juniper from Schoolhouse . "I feel like I created my own pretty laundromat,” Shea says.

Embracing Outdoor Living

“You can’t live at the beach and not have an outside shower ,” Clasen says. “It’s the first stop on the way inside.”

The organic design of the original brick patio was a selling point for the Watsons. “The bricks are so old,” Shea says.

“I don’t think you could re-create this today if you wanted to. It’s one of my favorite things about the property.” The couple keep the double doors open and treat the patio as another living room.

“Even when you’re inside, you feel like you’re outside,” Shea says. “The outdoor spaces truly are an extension of this house. Our doors are almost always open, so we’re constantly moving between the two without realizing it. Nothing is ever perfect around here, but everything is always relaxed, which is what I was hoping for all along.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Pets and animals, pets and animals | a 9-year-old boy’s dream of a pet octopus is a sensation as thousands follow terrance’s story online.

living the dream tour

By ANITA SNOW (Associated Press)

The one thing 9-year-old Cal Clifford wanted more than anything since he was a toddler was a pet octopus.

The boy’s family in rural Edmond, Oklahoma, humored him with toy versions of an eight-legged mollusk, but as Cal got older it became clear that only the real thing would do.

The child’s father, 36-year-old dentist Cameron Clifford, researched the possibility with a local aquarium store and before long Terrance the California two-spot octopus, also known as a bimac, was living in a watery enclosure at the family home southwest of Oklahoma City.

“We really like to encourage our children’s interests,” said the older Clifford. “It’s magical to see a kid embrace their dreams and bring them to fruition. Cal has been infatuated with the natural world and with marine biology since he was very little.”

A popular TikTok saga was launched with the father narrating the tale of Terrance the cephalopod, using a faux British accent generated by the social media app. Eventually, hundreds of thousands of people were following.

Within weeks, the tale took an surprise twist when it was learned Terrance was actually a female as it laid some 50 eggs that the family initially assumed were unfertilized. Several weeks after that, teeny near-transparent octopus babies began hatching and were given names like Rocket Larry, Squid Cudi, Swim Shady, Jay-Sea and Sea-Yoncé

Cal had burst into tears at the family dinner table when his father first announced that the local aquarium store had told him adopting an octopus would be possible.

Father and son together researched what was needed, deciding on a saltwater tank and water cycling system and ensuring they would be able to source food for the soft-bodied sea creature.

The family’s younger son Lyle and mom Kari also joined the project in their own ways. A family friend who is a reptile scientist has provided support and advice.

While female octopuses usually die soon after laying their eggs, Clifford said Terrance remains alive four months later.

Clifford said the family has gained much from the experience.

“Aside from the physical, financial and emotional requirements of owning a species such as a bimac, you will learn a lot about yourself in the process,” the Arizona-born Clifford told TikTok followers in his app-generated accent. “There’s always some valve or seal that’s not completely closed, and your storm resistant carpet isn’t rated for gallons and gallons of seawater. You’ll learn that seawater and electricity don’t always get along.”

“You will learn new things and meet incredible people and will learn that wildlife is magnificent,” he added. “But most of all, you’ll learn to love a not-so-tiny octopus like Terrance.”
