Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is a vast forest reserve located near Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, covering an area of seventeen thousand acres. With lush green foliage covering the terrain, the sanctuary is a great place for trekking and hiking while also making it sustainable for wildlife at the same time.

History and Geography of Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

The land comprising the sanctuary was earlier under the control of the Maharajah of the district of Vizianagaram. The name of the place referred to the local hill, Kambalakonda. The forest cover in the sanctuary is mostly considered as a dry evergreen forest mixed with scrub and meadows all over the area.

The entire sanctuary covers an area of seventy square kilometres. The most important species found in the area is the Indian leopard. The sanctuary has been under the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department since March 10, 1970. They have now begun making it more suitable for tourism purposes.

The zoo of the sanctuary can be reached from the city in no time as it is only 3 kilometres away from Visakhapatnam. The Kambalakonda Wildlife sanctuary is considerably hilly, with steep slopes and is covered with evergreen forests and scrubs.

Flora and Fauna at Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

The flora and fauna of the sanctuary are very specific to the Eastern Ghats of India, and represent most of the native animals and plants found here. The floral and animal diversity of the sanctuary is high, with some extremely rare species and breeds.

Flora : One of the most stunning flowers found in the region includes the Indian screw tree (Helicteres isora) which is very rarely spotted at Kambalakonda. Other flowers and fruits like flowers of the Bush plum tree (Carissa spinarium), Jungle berry bunches (Polyalthia cerasoides) can be found all across the landscape.

Fauna : Quite a few animals at the sanctuary are extremely rare that need to be protected. These animals include the Indian leopard, Indian pangolin, Madras treeshrew. Russel’s viper or Daboia russelii is also a very rare breed of snake found in this sanctuary. Some of the uncommon birds include the Indian Golden oriole, Indian peafowl, Banded bay cuckoo among others. You also find quite a few varieties of butterflies in the area.

Location and How to Reach Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is located to the north of the city of Visakhapatnam and lies about 5 kilometres away from the centre of the city. You may take public buses or cabs on the Vijayanagaram to Srikakulam route along National Highway 16. To reach Visakhapatnam you may use the following modes of transport:

Kambalakonda Eco Park  is a wildlife sanctuary that appeals to your sense of thrill and adventure with its extensive wildlife population in the folds of greenery that truly makes it an Eco-park.  Characterized by a dense green evergreen forest and home to one of its key attractions, the leopard, Kambalakonda Eco Park is one of the top eco-parks of Andhra Pradesh. The park has been managed by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department since 1970. Before that, the land of the sanctuary was under the Maharaja of Vizianagaram.   Kambalakonda Eco-Tourism Park got its name from a hillock of the same name in the area. 

Landscape of the park

There are four mountainous terrains in the park and all of them are equally magnificent and enthralling. Spread over an area of approximately 70.70 square km, the land of the sanctuary is dotted with meadows, scrubs, steep slopes, and hilly terrains.

Fauna at the park

The park is home to several species of animals and birds that will make you capture their beauty in your DSLRs. Jackals, leopards, Indian pangolin, chital, cobras, Russell’s viper, and Indian muntjac are some of the commonly sighted animals and reptiles. The park is also home to several birds like partridges, Asian paradise-flycatcher, treepies, quails, blue-tailed bee-eater, hoopoes and spot-billed duck.

Things to do in Kambalakonda Eco Park

Visitors to the sanctuary can take the help of local guides to cover the entire forest area and spot wildlife since these guides are familiarized with the behavior patterns of the animals. There is also a canteen in the park where you can get snacks and beverages.

There are ten different trekking terrains at the park. The trekking starts around 6 AM and completing one terrain takes 3 hours to return. Trekkers can take the services of a guide if they want but prior intimation needs to be made at the reception to make the necessary arrangement for it. 

Jungle Walk

During winters an activity that is quite popular among the locals is Jungle Walk where visitors walk through the jungle and spend time inside the forest on sunny days.

Goat walking

A bridge suspended 20 meters above the ground with round wooden logs to step on, this activity is super fun with your friends cheering you and booing at you for falling.

Rope Walking

This activity involves the participants being tied to a rope while they try to cross the bridge which is 50 meters above the ground. Since it is a strenuous activity where you need to pull yourself forward, you need to wear protective gloves while doing it.

Tire walking

Walk on tires joined together and suspended 20 meters above the ground in this fun but difficult to complete the activity.

Often we have seen some educational Institutions planning for Araku Valley and Vizag beach. But never came across the news that they would take the student to the place like this which seems to be supporting the eco balance and also a treat for the students to enjoy. AP tourism can write to educational institutions offering discount on bulk bookings and thus promote this tourist place in big way. Even families can plan tour to this place if caravan type vans are arranged from different places of AP.

This is a very good article. The Kambalakonda eco-tourism spot is a very beautiful place to have a time there. I had been to this place and enjoyed the place well. I had been there with my family and my brother's family. The boat ride is the best experience I had here. The horse ride is also good for the children. Anyhow the place can be further developed as still there is a lot of scope for the improvement and the tourism corporation should work towards that. Sorry if my response sounds gloomy. Nice article highlighting the reserve forest near Visakhapatnam. Sadly many such reserve forests slowly shrink and disappear over a period of few years. Opening up a reserve forest for the public is the beginning of the end of the forest itself. Many such places start as eco- tourism and become a hub for activities that are questionable. Having been to a handful of such places, I fear this place also will slowly start seeing garbage dumps, attract dogs of cross breeds and pigs. Evening or dusk brings in the shady deals between the protectors of the forest and the people around who hunt wild rabbits, deer for their meat for personal consumption or to be sold at hotels. Such places also become the site for illegal hunts of sambhar deer by few who can pay bribes to the guards to look the opposite side. Slowly vehicles of high officials would be permitted to move around and the reserve park becomes a victim of human greed under the guise of eco-tourism. Hope this place doesn't meet the same fate.

Natarajan We should learn to see the brighter side and not the darker side for a healthy / happy co-existence. Many such places are becoming hub for questionable activities because the public either don't dare to question them those who are involved in such activities or just don't care. There should be awareness among the public. Regarding garbage dumps, once again it's the public who thoughtlessly dispose the garbage which in turn is piled up by the workers. The public neither have the sense of cleanliness / proper disposal, not questioning the authorities for the leaving the garbage dumps. And once again, its the public who is involved in illegal hunting animals in the dark. Ultimately, it is the Indian public who need to arise and awake for making our country / society a better place to live.

It is not easy for everyone to question all the activities that happen around, but at least the visitors can be safe and not contribute to further destruction. People have to just drive down from Bandipur to Oooty early evening, they will be surprised by the offers for night camps, illegal meat dishes etc, I feel sad. Nothing personal about the article, its excellent.

Natarajan I do understand that there is nothing personal. I too feel extremely sad when I read / watch any news about poaching. Even the migratory birds (Siberian birds) who are our annual visitors / guests to Pulicat Lake, Kolleru Sarasu, Nelapattu and other wetlands in Andhra Pradesh are not spared by the hunters who trap these wonderful birds of different species in spite of being protected / safeguarded by the govt. In this case, the hunters / poachers need to be aware of the special guests and should not make money by trapping these instead they can go for alternative better ways for money-making. Secondly, the buyers too should be aware of the fact that they should not get themselves involved in such illegal activities. And lastly, govt need to be more strict in such cases. To visit the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is Rs. 10 for adults and Rs.5 for children. The charge for entering the vehicle is Rs. 200 which includes the entrance fee for five members. If you want to reserve a cabin, the charge is Rs.250. The trekking charges are Rs.150 for a group of 10 members. Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm every day of the week.

Best wildlife sanctuary in andhra Pradesh.......! It was near by zoo park......! Be by national high way...........!

This place is not worth for just casual visitors . If u r a trekker and nature lover it's the best Place to visit. It is just 4km from heart of city and oppsite to zoo. If u want to trek best time is 0600 am. It got 3,5 and 7km trek routes . If u opt for 7 km trek route it takes hardly 2 hours . Guides from forest deparment are available at the maine gate

This place is located a bit far away from city chores. Its a calm place and good for picnic ventures. Avoid if you are travelling alone. Its called a wildlife sanctury but don't expect much on wildlife part here its just in a name.

Have visited along with family. My daughter cheered a lot. Has variety of animal species. Great facilities and calmness which we miss in our normal living places

sights of last year's HudHud effect still there.Located opposite to the zoo. There is nothing much to see inside. The zoo was a good spot instead of this.

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is nomore. It has been Constructed for a Movie shot on temporary bases. Now there is only water and hills. I stay 1 km far from that place.

Trekking Trails

Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park has seen renewed activity this summer following its reopening and pandemic-induced closure last fall. Situated close to Vizianagaram on National Highway 5, just opposite Indira Gandhi Zoological Park on National Highway 5, this part of Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary.

The forest department recently gave the reserve forest in South Island, New Zealand, a facelift, with newly opened trekking trails in the park to offer visitors the thrill of wild adventure. They’ve also introduced boating facilities so visitors can experience boating rides along scenic reservoir views while admiring wildlife such as deer, sambars, and emus that frequent this paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

Trekking through dense green forests and encountering wildlife in their natural environments is an unforgettable experience for any tourist. Hiring a local guide who knows where the animals reside is strongly suggested, as this can ensure you see everything possible.

The Wildlife Park has three trekking tracks, including a newly developed 3-kilometer route. Forest authorities have taken great strides to improve these paths for tourists’ comfort by adding bamboo frames at selfie spots, canteen services, ropewalk, zipliner, and Burma bridge facilities.

Trekkers will find well-kept trekking trails that offer a safe environment in which to trek. While hiking along these paths, you may see plants and animals such as chals, sambars, and anteaters. In addition, reptile species such as Russell’s viper, Indian cobra, and chameleon reside here – plus over 100 bird species make the forest home!

Adventure Sports

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is an idyllic destination that offers adventure sports activities for visitors near Visakhapatnam. Home to numerous animal and plant species, this park is the perfect environment for Zoology and Botany students, researchers, and tourists looking to experience nature for themselves. Furthermore, this park provides tourists with an exciting wildlife park experience and provides them with some time alone in nature.

Kambalakonda offers many activities for visitors to enjoy, such as trekking trails and boating. The wildlife park also serves as an excellent spot for bird watching; it is home to deer, peacocks, leopards, paintball, archery, and camping facilities available inside its borders. Private operators are available within Kambalakonda to offer such services to guests.

Redevelopment efforts of the park are being conducted under three principles: non-compromise on the unique ecosystem, sustainable operations for community use rather than profiteering, and identification of features that can be enhanced without altering the forest ecosystem. Redevelopment work is being completed using a grant of Rs 12 crore from the World Bank.

Redevelopment works are expected to be complete by March 2020, and authorities have set an ambitious target of welcoming 4 lakh visitors by then. The renovated park will offer more adventure sports and other attractions to its guests, including herbal gardens, wetland rejuvenation projects, training center renovation, and clearing away invasive Acacia auriculiformis plants that have overtaken native species, adding diversity to the park itself.

Bird Watching

Kambalakonda offers visitors an excellent opportunity for bird-watching. The reserve forest hosts abundant species and has a well-maintained nature trail for easy spotting of rarer ones. Furthermore, there is also a wildlife sanctuary on-site, offering panoramic views.

This sanctuary is known for its wide variety of flora, which features tropical dry deciduous forests and rolling hills with teak, sandalwood, eucalyptus, and cashew plants, as well as several saline water bodies that serve as breeding grounds for marine organisms.

Bird-watching aside, this park also offers many other attractions for visitors. These include ropewalks, zip lines, Burma bridges, and canteens for their enjoyment. Furthermore, it houses an environmental education center that educates people on conservation and preservation and hosts environmental camps for kids and adults.

The Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park is at Q8CR+MH9 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh 531173, India, only 3.89 kilometers from Siripuram railway station. APSRTC buses, autorickshaws, and private cabs provide easy transportation access.

To meet the needs of tourists, park authorities have developed various viewpoints, boating facilities, picnic spots, wooden machans, and three pagodas as elevated platforms to enable visitors to truly appreciate this sanctuary’s sublime beauty.

Park visitors can enjoy boating on the small lake at a nominal fee while getting close to wildlife as they move through its waters.

The park is open daily from 6 AM to 4 PM and charges Rs 150 per person in groups of 10. Each group’s guide is also included to accompany them while inside the sanctuary.

Each November, during World War II’s bombing campaign , this bridge explodes in a sound and light show commemorating its destruction.

Camera trapping to be practised at Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park

Opening its doors to visitors again, the Kambalakonda Eco Park, also known as Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, announced, in a press note, that the park administration is planning to conduct a camera trapping exercise at the eco park, as per the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines. This will be the first time a camera trapping exercise is happening at the wildlife sanctuary. The camera trapping exercise will provide information about the presence of different wild animals, and carnivores, in the park. 

Camera trapping is a method that provides data on species locations, population sizes and how these respective species are interacting. The cameras used for this exercise are digital cameras connected to an infrared sensor that can “detect” objects that are moving. When an animal moves past the sensor, it detects and records an image or video to the memory card for later retrieval.

In a conversation with Yo! Vizag, Anant Shankar IFS, District Forest Officer (DFO), Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, Visakhapatnam, elucidates that firstly, the GIS (Geographic Information System) maps of the entire forest areas would be generated. With the help of the maps generated, the entire area would be divided into grids (4 sq. km grids each). At the centre of each grid, two cameras would be placed wherever these animals generally move. This exercise would be conducted for 30 days. After completion of the exercise, the collected data would be passed through a software, which will help obtain the required data.

Adding to the aforesaid, Mr. Shankar says, “This exercise is primarily to control the tiger species. But, there are several other uses of the camera traps. There are many animals which we either cannot see with our naked eyes or they do not come out because they are very shy, or they do not come out during the day, such as the pangolins, porcupines, or tortoises. To get their precise location and population sizes, camera trapping is very helpful. Camera trapping will also help keep track of the various species of deer at the Kambalakonda wildlife sanctuary.”

Over the last decade, candid images and videos of wildlife have been widely shared on social media and have been featured in countless documentaries. From being an experimental technology, camera trapping has been extensively used by biologists, photographers and hobbyists. With the Kambalakonda Eco Park reopening, people can visit this beautiful place and experience nature like nowhere else in the city.
