  • iaenn 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles I cannot wait for my next GaySail adventure. 5 Stars! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This may have been one of the best travel decisions I’ve ever made. For context, I’m a 35yo, white, gay, cis man. I just completed a two week cruise with GaySail in Phuket Thailand. I can’t imagine a better way to experience a country for the first time, have some adventure, meet new friends, and completely relax. At the start of my planning, I was looking for exposure to Thai culture, an opportunity to chill out, and have some fun and excitement with other gay men. I got what I asked for and more. I’m leaving this trip with deep friendships and I cannot wait to book my next GaySail adventure. We were able to see some amazing sights, intimate islands, private/nearly private beaches, big and small communities, and many beautiful places. We also had many spectacular dinners at beautiful resorts and restaurants. You get to know your crew mates very well! Some people were there for two full weeks and others departed after one. The age range of passengers was very wide, but leans older (~21-70); folks seemed to be cisgender men. One of my crew mates had been on 6 GaySail trips, so we had a veteran expert that helped set expectations, build community, and be the welcoming agent. Our Skipper and Cook were a lovely couple who’s expertise was clear from the beginning; they offered us a safe and low key environment with plenty of opportunities to learn about sailing. We were on a catamaran; I had a crew cabin and my travel buddy had a double cabin. The interior cabins seemed to be self contained with storage and electrical plugs. The crew cabin was VERY simple (only a small bed, light, and small fan), but I was able to store my bag elsewhere and I had access to the basics in the shared space. This trip is not for the fussy traveler. There are shared bathrooms, family style breakfast and lunch, and shared chores (mainly dishes). It’s important to note that the Skipper and Cook are expert volunteers and fellow travelers, they are not staff. You’re on a yacht/boat for a significant portion of each day and night, so you must learn to make space for each other quickly. Group dinners seemed to be mandatory and are paid for by the kitty, so it’s best to know that going in. I’d recommend getting to your destination early and expect to stay for a few days after. It’s best to recover from jet lag before getting on the water and to avoid a tight schedule when you depart. Read more Written January 10, 2023
  • staffy101 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome experience, highly recommend! Possibly the most chilled out way to spend a few weeks. I enjoyed my time that much I extended by another week. You can be as involved as much or little as you like with the sailing, which was great. Breakfast and lunch was fantastic, and the rest of the time was spent swimming, sunbathing and sipping on a Gin & Tonic! The perfect few weeks spent with some great new friends. Gay Thailand Uncovered: Top Destinations And Tips For Queer Travelers! 🇹🇭

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Ah, Thailand! A mosaic of golden temples, cerulean beaches, and bustling cities where the sound of tuk-tuks mingles with the scent of spicy street food. But, for the discerning queer traveler, Gay Thailand offers more than just a postcard-perfect vacation. It beckons with a promise of acceptance and a celebration of diversity, creating a vibrant tapestry rich in culture, tradition, and inclusivity.

Delve deeper into the political heart of Gay Thailand, and you’ll find a progressive nation leading the way in Southeast Asia. While many Asian countries grapple with LGBTQ+ rights, Thailand has consistently championed the queer cause. Though there’s still work to be done, the kingdom has taken significant steps towards marriage equality and transgender rights, establishing itself as a safe haven for many in the LGBTQ+ community.

Venture into the neon-lit streets of Bangkok , and you’ll discover why Gay Thailand is synonymous with electric nightlife. From the swanky rooftop bars overlooking the city’s skyline to the pulsating beats of Silom’s gay clubs, there’s an effervescent energy that captures the spirit of freedom and acceptance. And while the capital remains a major LGBTQ+ hotspot, don’t miss out on the laid-back vibes of Pattaya or the idyllic beaches of Phuket , where queer-friendly establishments are plentiful.

But beyond these kaleidoscopic experiences, the true allure of Gay Thailand lies in the heartwarming stories of its queer citizens. From vivacious drag performers and hardworking activists to everyday locals navigating their own coming-of-age tales, their narratives are woven into the country’s fabric. Their resilience and joy serve as a testament to Thailand’s unique place in the global LGBTQ+ landscape.

In a world where acceptance can sometimes feel like an oasis in a desert, Gay Thailand stands tall as a beacon of hope. With its delicate blend of ancient traditions and modern sensibilities, it remains a magnetic destination for LGBTQ+ wanderers, inviting them to not just witness but to become a part of its enchanting story. So, pack your bags and set your compass towards a journey that promises memories, merriment, and a deep sense of belonging.

History Of LGBT Rights In Thailand

Thailand has a long-standing history of LGBT acceptance, with the documentation of homosexuality dating back to the Ayutthaya period (1351 to 1767). Samutthakhot Kham Chan (สมุทรโฆษคำฉันท์), a Thai literature from Ayuttaya times, mentions lesbian relationships among the concubines in the royal palace.

In recent years, Thailand has made significant progress in legal protections and positive societal attitudes towards the LGBT community. The enactment of a comprehensive anti-discrimination law in 2015 covered both sexual orientation and gender identity and marked a pivotal step forward.

For travelers, the main cities like Bangkok , Chiang Mai , and Phuket are known to be more accepting and inclusive of LGBT individuals. However, it is essential to be cautious and vigilant, as situations may change, and not all areas or individuals may share the same level of acceptance. Remember to seek up-to-date information and advice before traveling, as outdated information may not accurately represent the current situation.

Thailand boasts several LGBT advocacy groups, including organizations like the Anjaree Foundation and the Thai Transgender Alliance . These groups work to further protect and promote LGBT rights and inclusion in the country. While there have been significant advancements in legal protections, there is still room for growth, such as the push for legal recognition of same-sex marriage and families.

It is vital for both local people and tourists to remain connected with the current situation as changes and challenges may arise. As a visitor in Thailand, it is crucial to respect and follow local laws and customs while being mindful of personal safety. Recognize that, like in any country, there may be individuals who are not supportive or accepting.

Remember, be vigilant, stay informed, and enjoy the rich cultural experience that Thailand has to offer to its LGBT community and travelers!

The LGBT Legal Situation In Thailand

Thailand is often seen as a paradise for LGBT tourists; however, the situation for locals may not be as tolerant. The legal landscape for the LGBT community is complex. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity is legal in the country, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples do not have the same legal protections as opposite-sex couples.

When traveling to Thailand, it is essential to understand that the situation can change rapidly, and information might become outdated. Therefore, always seek current advice before you embark on your journey. While you’re in the country, remain vigilant, as bad actors can be found everywhere.

In the main cities, like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, locals are more accepting and open-minded towards the LGBT community. However, some rural areas may not be as welcoming. When visiting these locations, be cautious and respect their culture.

As for the safety of LGBT travelers, taking precautions and staying informed about the local scene is highly recommended. Connecting with LGBT advocacy groups in Thailand, such as the Thai Transgender Alliance or The Anjaree Group , can provide additional information and support during your stay.

In conclusion, the legal situation of LGBT rights in Thailand is a mix of progress and setbacks. The country has a long way to go in terms of equal rights and protections. But, with the enthusiastic attitude of the Thai people and the continuous work of LGBT advocacy groups, we can hope for a brighter and more inclusive future. Always remember to stay informed, be cautious, and enjoy your time in the beautiful country of Thailand!

The LGBT Social Situation In Thailand

Thailand is often perceived as a welcoming and inclusive country for LGBT+ individuals, especially among tourists. Visitors frequenting major cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai may find thriving LGBT+ scenes with many bars, clubs, and other entertainment venues catering to this community. However, it is essential to understand that local LGBT+ individuals may still face challenges in their daily lives that tourists might not experience.

Although Thailand has decriminalized same-sex sexual activity, broader legal protections for the local LGBT+ community are still lacking—such as anti-discrimination laws or legal recognition of same-sex relationships. This missing legal framework can create constraints and limitations for Thai LGBT+ individuals in various aspects, including work, education, and at home.

In terms of safety, it is always important to remain cautious and vigilant. While many parts of Thailand may seem perfectly safe for LGBT+ tourists, bad actors can be present in any country. Be aware of your surroundings and follow local advice, as situations can change quickly. If you are unsure about your safety, consult with up-to-date resources or get in touch with local LGBT advocacy groups for guidance.

Some notable LGBT advocacy groups in Thailand include the Anjaree Foundation , which focuses on lesbian rights, and the Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand, a group that works on promoting the rights of all LGBT+ individuals. If you are looking to connect with locals, gain insights into the community, or seek guidance, they may provide valuable information on both the vibrant scenes and the challenges faced by LGBT+ individuals in the country.

To stay informed, it’s important to always seek current advice before traveling, as information can become outdated quickly. Additionally, while visiting Thailand, remain respectful of local customs and traditions, as doing so will contribute positively to your experience and interactions with the LGBT+ community.

So, while Thailand may appear to be an exciting and inclusive destination for LGBT+ tourists, bear in mind that there is still work to be done regarding the local social situation. Stay informed, respect local culture, and support those actively working towards achieving broader LGBT+ rights in Thailand.

Trans Rights In Thailand

Thailand is often perceived as a progressive country when it comes to LGBT rights. The vibrant and accepting lifestyle, particularly in the main cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, creates an exciting atmosphere for both local and international LGBT individuals. However, despite the relative social acceptance, Thai law still has room for improvement when it comes to trans rights.

Transgender people in Thailand face significant challenges in obtaining legal recognition for their gender identity. This lack of legal protection makes them vulnerable to various forms of discrimination, impacting their ability to access education, employment, and healthcare.

When traveling in Thailand, it’s essential to stay up-to-date on the current situation concerning LGBT rights and remain vigilant. Situations can change quickly, and it’s advisable to seek advice from local LGBT advocacy groups – such as the Thai Transgender Alliance – before setting off on your journey.

As a visitor, you can play a role in supporting the local LGBT community by showing respect and understanding. Be cautious of bad actors who may take advantage of travelers, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. If necessary, take steps to protect yourself and make connections with supportive individuals and organizations.

In conclusion, while Thailand has made progress in recent years, there’s still work to be done to ensure legal protections and equal rights for transgender individuals. It’s essential for both locals and tourists to stay informed, remain vigilant, and support the ongoing efforts of LGBT advocacy groups in the country.

The Future For The Queer Community In Thailand

The future of LGBT rights in Thailand seems promising, especially with the increase in feminist and LGBTQ+ protests since 2020. The country has started gaining international recognition as an LGBTQ+-friendly destination. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has even launched a global project entitled “ Go Thai Be Free ” to encourage LGBTQ+ tourists from around the world and raise its profile as an LGBTQ+-friendly country.

While tourists may experience a welcoming atmosphere, it is essential to understand that the local LGBTQ+ community might still face challenges. Although some cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai are more progressive, individuals in smaller regions could encounter resistance or discrimination. It is crucial for tourists and locals alike to stay vigilant and be aware of potential risks.

To ensure an informed and safe trip, travelers should seek up-to-date information and advice from reliable sources, including LGBT advocacy groups in Thailand, such as the Thai Transgender Alliance. Situations can change fast, and it is best to stay informed and proactive.

While exploring the vibrant culture and nightlife of cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, maintaining a cautious mindset and being respectful of local customs and traditions will allow you to have the best experience possible. Recognize that situations may change in various regions and adapt accordingly.

In conclusion, the future of LGBT rights in Thailand looks optimistic, with encouraging initiatives and a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ tourists. As you embark on this exciting journey, always remain vigilant to ensure a memorable and safe adventure. Remember to engage with advocacy groups for up-to-date information and advice, respect local customs, and, most importantly, enjoy the vibrant and diverse culture that Thailand has to offer.

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay Thailand

Thailand may be an exciting destination for LGBTQ+ tourists, but it’s crucial to understand the differences in experiences for local LGBTQ+ individuals and visitors to the country. While Bangkok is often seen as an LGBTQ+ paradise, the rights and protections for locals might be less tolerant compared to what tourists encounter.

To ensure your safety and enjoyment while visiting Thailand, consider taking a few precautions and staying informed about the current situation. Start by researching the most up-to-date information on LGBTQ+ rights and changes in the political landscape, as this information can change quickly, and outdated sources might provide inaccurate guidance.

When traveling to Thailand, it is always a good idea to stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings, just as you would in any other country. As there are bad actors everywhere, it’s essential to exercise caution and be mindful of your actions.

Familiarize yourself with local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups in Thailand, such as the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Human Rights Watch . These organizations work towards promoting equal rights and protection for LGBTQ+ individuals and can provide valuable resources for travelers looking for advice and current information.

Take note of the experiences in main cities like Bangkok and other prominent locations mentioned in your research. Understand that there can be significant differences in LGBTQ+ rights and experiences within different regions and cities.

Remember to approach all situations with excitement while being cautious about your safety as you experience the vibrant culture and welcoming nature of Thailand. By staying informed and vigilant, you can help protect yourself and ensure a memorable trip.

Discover the best 10 destinations to enjoy gay Thailand

A rambling nation where frenetic city breaks and blissful island getaways merge in perfect harmony, Thailand is the fever dream you won’t want to wake up from. Rest up in utmost luxury within Bangkok ’s affordably decadent spas or seek ancient empires and Buddhist stupas rising from the sun-scorched earth. Every day Thailand opens up a world of wonder to its visitors, be they hedonists, spiritualists or hardened foodies. For queer travellers especially, Thailand is the perfect retreat, populated by go-go boys, gay-friendly wellness retreats and alternative culture by the busload. Slurp on juicy rice noodles by day and ultra-cheap cocktails by night, embracing the contrast between old Thai customs and new era nightlife. Here’s our rundown of the best destinations in Thailand for gay travellers.

Tailor-Made Thailand: Bangkok to the Beach

Discover the breadth of Thailand and its essential sites during visits to the shimmering, gold-plated Reclining Buddha in Bangkok, temple-rich Chiang Mai and the sun-soaked beaches of Koh Samui.

LGBTQ acceptance in Thailand

Thailand is one of the most tolerant countries in Asia, shaped by Buddhist values and a mai pen rai attitude that allow LGBTQ culture to thrive. While outward displays of affection are frowned upon and LGBTQ rights are not fully cemented in law, ladyboys and tom-dees proliferate in modern Thai culture. Gay marriage in Thailand is still not formally recognised, but, despite this, many same-sex couples travel to the nation to have their union blessed by Buddhist monks.

Where East truly meets West, Bangkok melds traditional Buddhist ways of life with outrageous hedonism, creating a vibrant atmosphere ripe for exploration

Get sweaty in Bangkok alongside Thailand’s most streetwise locals and young backpackers from across the globe. Where East truly meets West, Bangkok melds traditional Buddhist ways of life with outrageous hedonism, creating a vibrant atmosphere ripe for exploration. Despite being one of Thailand’s more expensive cities with its fair share of hustlers, Bangkok is still among the most affordable cities in the world, where tuk-tuks tout for the price of a sandwich and hip boutique stores compete on price.

The veritable capital of ‘Gay Asia’, Bangkok is the first call for gay parties across the continent, boasting an infamous party scene to make even Ru Paul blush. While backpackers abound in cheap accommodations and the red light scene, there is more to the nightlife here. There are countless cabarets, clubs, saunas, go-go and karaoke bars around the city, with LGBT offerings centred in Silom. Outside of Silom, you’ll also find Sukhumvit Road, Aor Tor Gor and Khao San Road ready to welcome you. While some Bangkok gay bars and clubs are more respectable than others, if it’s plush sophistication you’re after, the city can provide. Try a roof-top infinity pool to escape the heat or check into a luxury hotel complete with spa, bar and bistro. Discover the best luxury offerings and our favourite Bangkok gay club in our dedicated Bangkok travel guide . Or, for when you’re done partying, take a look at the best day trips from Bangkok .

2. Koh Samet

One such day trip from Bangkok is to the glorious Koh Samet, known fondly as Thailand’s gayest island. Just two hours’ drive from the capital towards the southeast, Koh Samet is an ideal location for a weekend escape to the beach. Popular among Bangkok’s middle and upper classes, as much as the international gay community, Koh Samet serves laid-back parties in a tropical paradise, with crowds and prices peaking on the weekend. Like most Thai islands, Koh Samet is similarly gorgeous, with endless sunshine on palm-strewn beaches kissed by turquoise waters. Part of the Khao Laem Ya Ko Samet National Park, Koh Samet has an entry fee of 200 baht ($6USD) but this small amount goes towards protecting the natural environment and wildlife ecosystems on land and at sea.

Choose a beach based on your personality; party people can mingle and undertake water sports on Haad Sai Kaew and Ao Hin Khok; families can have fun on Ao Wong Duean; while shyer beachgoers can enjoy a romantic escape to Ao Wa, Ao Pakarang or Ao Kiew Na Nok. For one of the best beaches in gay Thailand travel straight to Ao Phai, home of the Silver Sands Bar and open-air nightclub and neighbour to Ao Tubtim, Koh Samet’s unofficial gay beach. Ao Tubtim was put on the map by Tub Tim Resort, another of the island’s best gay beach bars. Straighter and more Thai-style than what’s on offer in Phuket or Pattaya, nightlife on Koh Samet is for tourists and Bangkok gays keen on beachside karaoke and Thai pop disco.

If Koh Samet was likened to Baby Spice then Pattaya would definitely be Scary Spice, the wildest of Thailand’s many islands. Famed for its boys, epic nightlife and cheap, cheap luxury, Pattaya is bound to please those who really wanna zigazig ah. The Pattaya gay scene begins on the beach and moves into town come sundown. For gay-friendly beach days, try the popular Dongtan and Jomtien Beaches, before heading to the Walking Street entertainment district for cabarets, clubs, bars and raucous karaoke sessions. The Boyztown district sees the majority of gay bars, massage shops, restaurants and gay-oriented accommodations, seconded only by Sunee Plaza for go-go clubs and more massage. Alternatively, dive into the more exclusive world of Pattaya, splashing a little extra on luxury accommodation, rooftop pools, world-class spas and fine dining experiences.

While Pattaya has seen years of overdevelopment and a sex trade run rampant, most recently the government has begun efforts to restore the island’s natural beauty and crack down on illicit trade. And although the sex industry is very much alive here, there is now emphasis on sustainable development and vanilla-flavoured fun for all.

Another beach paradise with a reputation for naughtiness is the southern island of Phuket, hosting luxurious villas that overlook the Andaman Sea. Equally as affordable as Pattaya yet becoming more expensive each year, Phuket offers much of the same craziness as above. Complete your bingo card of things to do in Thailand; trying a cabaret, club or go-go bar and revelling in the lack of inhibition, or go upmarket to Phuket’s burgeoning luxury resorts, where cocktail bars, fine dining, classy spas and infinity pools lie in wait.

Gay Phuket is centred on the “Paradise Complex” of Patong, an area compacted to a few pedestrian streets with bars, cafés, clubs and restaurants competing to attract the foreign LGBTQ community. The more straight orientated party area runs along Bangla Road. For beachside fun, the rainbow-lined Patong beach is the top Phuket gay beach, running 3.5 kilometres alongside the beach resort town of Patong. Ever popular among gays and the starting point of Phuket Pride, Patong Beach is regularly packed. For a more chilled option, try Karon Beach to the south just below Patong or Bangtao Beach, a short drive north, where the popular gay hangout spot known as Dream Beach Club lies.

5. Koh Samui

Smaller and more stylish than either Phuket or Pattaya, Koh Samui is the east coast’s answer to island utopia with a fair amount of partying thrown in. Blessed with enviable weather, vast beaches and luxury lodgings, Koh Samui is the one to go to if you want to wind down in style. One of Thailand’s partying capitals, a short boat ride from the full-moon parties of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui offers extravagant, gay-friendly nightlife with the added bonus of cheaper drinks and fewer crowds. What’s more, is the island’s myriad daytime activities; from sundown, yachting to waterfall trekking in Angthong National Marine Park.

While affordability is one of Koh Samui’s key selling points, the island is not short of indulgence. Step your vacation game up by booking at one of the best luxury hotels in Koh Samui , where you’ll find everything from infinity pools to full treatment spas. As well as passing through the island’s friendly beach towns, don’t leave without enjoying a romantic dinner by Bophut Beach before sampling the local Alambic rum in Chaweng, Samui’s nightlife centre. Here you’ll find dazzling ladyboy shows and open-air events on Chaweng Beach. Lamai Beach is another one to explore, known as the island’s best gay beach with waterside restaurants and street food options.

Land of the most magnificent seafood BBQ served at street markets across town, Krabi is the number one choice for both foodies and nature lovers. Often considered the jumping-off point to the southern islands including Koh Lanta and Railay Beach – Thailand’s deep water solo and climbing capital – Krabi is a destination in itself for its world-class street eats and wild surroundings. Kayaking, snorkelling, climbing and scuba diving adventures lie just a short minibus ride away but before branching out, take the time to appreciate the authenticity and unkempt beauty of Krabi’s limestone karsts, white-sand beaches and dense rainforest, spending time in slow-moving fishing villages and boating through the province’s arcane mangrove forests.

With just enough development for convenience, Krabi retains its tranquil charm by leaving the partying to nearby Ao Nang and Phi Phi. That’s not to say Krabi is without its fair share of nighttime entertainment; indeed, the neighbourhoods of Tonsai Village and Loh Dalum are packed with bars, pubs and clubs, all boasting a fresh, non-sleazy vibe. Depending on what you fancy, opt for live reggae nights in Krabi’s hippie dive bars or swig alcohol from a bucket at Center Point in Ao Nang.

Much like Bangkok, Chiang Mai caters to all kinks with its array of go-go bars, cabarets, saunas and street events around Thapae Gate and the Night Bazaar area

7. Chiang Mai

The beating heart of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a veritable utopia for ex-pats, packed with things to do without battling the chaos of the capital. Easily walkable within the tourist centre (Old City), Chiang Mai is one for comfort and convenience. While away your days alternating between spas and street-side eateries, staying hydrating on steaming bowls of Kao Soi (coconut curry noodle soup) and fresh coconut smoothies. The largest city in Northern Thailand bordered by misty mountains, Chiang Mai has all you could ever want. Rent a motorbike or book a minivan to explore the rural regions to the northwest, stopping in Mae Hong Son on the Myanmar border for Western hippie enclaves, waterfalls and authentic tribal villages.

Marvel at the scenery on the journey back to the Old City where a very different cultural experience awaits. Much like Bangkok, Chiang Mai caters to all kinks with its array of go-go bars, cabarets, saunas and street events around Thapae Gate and the Night Bazaar area. Save your good clobber for an evening out in Nimmanhaeminda, where upmarket restaurants, bars and coffee shops line the streets beside a multitude of new boutique hotels. Gay Chiang Mai used to be centred on Santitham and Chang Puek, but today the freshest offerings lie along Gay Soi 6 (Soi 6 Charoen Prathet Road), with a smattering of gay karaoke bars, saunas and massage shops remaining in Santitham.

8. Koh Lipe

The remoteness of Koh Lipe – accessible only via Hat Yai airport and Pak Bara speedboat port on the border to Malaysia – is its saving grace, allowing it to dodge the development and over-tourism of the neighbouring islands. We can also thank its inconvenience for allowing the preservation of local ecosystems and healthy coral within Tarutao National Marine Park. On land, Koh Lipe impresses with a nice selection of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels which overlook fine white sand beaches stretching the 3.5-kilometre length of the island. Stay for a romantic beach break interspersed with some of the country’s best scuba diving opportunities before getting swept up in the close-knit yet lively local nightlife.

Named after the turtles that inhabit the region’s clear waters, Koh Tao is certainly a great place to nest, served as it is by impeccable cliff-cradled beaches and everyday sunshine. Located close to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao brings a breath of fresh air to the Gulf of Thailand with its bohemian charm and serene natural beauty.

Known for its large number of affordable diving schools, snorkelling sites and dazzling marine life, Koh Tao is a great place to recuperate and learn something new in nature. Lapped by calm waters and affording the best sundown views is Sairee Beach where you can rent a kayak and paddle to Koh Nang Yuan. Chalok Baan Kao Beach is another favourite but venturing off the set path will bring you to the island’s most serene unnamed beach spots, served by a guesthouse or two and caches of untouched coral. Thanks to the island’s regular influx of gay visitors, you’ll be in good company when the evening beckons, particularly in the area around Sairee Beach where most clubs and bars are located.

10. Koh Phangan

Although the above destinations know how to have a good time, Koh Phangan deserves the accolade of the ultimate party island. Home of the infamous monthly Full Moon Party which attract thousands to the region, Koh Phangan goes by its own seasons, with crowds peaking each lunar month. Outside of the full moon, Koh Phangan rests in style, its beaches – notably Bottle Beach, Haad Yao Beach and Salad Beach – catering to a strong gay crowd looking for chilled out fun. The island’s small number of gay bars lie beachside, with more nightlife and gay-friendly offerings in the main town of Thong Sala. If low-key festivity is more your style, the town provides live music events, hippie gatherings and half-moon jungle parties throughout the season. On full moon, however, most will head straight to Haad Rin Beach where neon-clad travellers from across the globe bond over a shared love for DJ-led dance music, fire-wielding circus tricks and all-out hedonism. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

LGBTQIA+ Thailand: the ultimate travel guide

Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for LGBTQIA+ travellers in the world. Its tourism industry has directly courted gay travellers for a long time, and the country is home to many robust LGBTQIA+ communities. It’s known for its fantastic LGBTQIA+ nightlife, with plenty of options throughout the country. Although the main gay scene is found in Bangkok , Phuket, Koh Samet, and Pattaya are also popular gay destinations. If you’re an LGBTQIA+ traveller in Thailand, you can expect a fun, welcoming atmosphere and plenty of great parties.

Thailand: is it LGBTQIA-friendly?

gay cruises thailand

Thailand is a fantastic country for LGBTQIA+ travellers. Public displays of affection in general are traditionally seen as taboo and this extends to heterosexual couples as well. You’re unlikely to be harassed for displaying affection, but avoiding it is generally seen as more respectful. While LGBTQIA+ travellers will generally have no issues travelling here, LGBTQIA+ rights in Thailand for locals are still a work in progress.

As of 2022, transgender people cannot legally change their gender, while the recognition of same-sex marriages or civil unions are still in the works. LGBTQIA+ people also face barriers in many employment areas, despite anti-discrimination laws passed in 2015. The Bangkok Rainbow Organisation and Thai Transgender Alliance are two organisations working to change that, and they may also be able to assist you if you run into any trouble during your trip.

Where are the best LGBTQIA+ areas in Thailand?

gay cruises thailand

You’ll find the biggest LGBTQIA+ scene in Thailand in its capital city, Bangkok, and it’s a great city to meet LGBTQIA+ locals and travellers. Phuket is one of Thailand’s best islands and is also home to some of its best gay hotspots. Pattaya is well known for its nightlife and beautiful beaches, and Koh Samet is the perfect spot for partying on the beach.

Gay bars and clubs in Bangkok

gay cruises thailand

Bangkok’s main gay area is based around two streets: Silom Soi 2 and Silom Soi 4. Silom Soi 2 is where you’ll find gay clubs and parties, and Silom Soi 2 is where you’ll find more relaxed bars and dining options.

These are, by far, the best spots for meeting LGBTQIA+ people in Thailand. Bangkok is Thailand’s most popular tourist destination and is home to plenty of amazing attractions outside of its gay nightlife. The Grand Palace Museum, Wat Arun Ratchawararam Temple and Erawan Shrine are all great places to visit during the day.

Pride Bar & Restaurant

gay cruises thailand

Pride Bar & Restaurant is the successor to the famous Telephone Bar, which sadly had to close in 2021. Pride Restaurant, right next door, bought it out and expanded its restaurant to include a gay bar that’s always packed. They have a lovely seating area outside where you can watch crowds roam up and down Silom Soi 4. The restaurant serves a delicious selection of Thai and international dishes.

The Stranger Bar

gay cruises thailand

The Stranger Bar is the best spot in Bangkok for drag shows, and it’s right next door to Pride Bar. You’ll find queens putting on incredible performances every night of the week, and the shows are always fun and engaging.

The show usually starts at 10:30 pm, and there are multiple short performances running each night. There’s no entry fee to get in, but you do need to order some drinks. It’s a very popular spot and not too big, so you might have to queue for a while before you can get in, but don’t worry, it’s well worth the wait.

Balcony Bar

gay cruises thailand

Across the road from Pride Bar and The Stranger Bar, you’ll find one of the best karaoke bars in Bangkok. It bills itself as ‘The Fun Pub’, and there’s certainly plenty of fun to be had, drinking delicious cocktails and belting out your favourite karaoke hits. The balcony also frequently hosts cabaret shows and go-go dancers, with shows starting at 10:30 pm. If the lines are a little too long for your tastes at The Stranger Bar, Balcony is a great alternative.

gay cruises thailand

DJ Station is one of the busiest, most popular gay clubs in Bangkok, at one end of Silom Soi 2. Silom Soi 2 is home to most of Bangkok’s gay clubs, and the whole street is almost like a club complex, so you need to pay to get into the street itself.

The club starts filling up at around 11:30 pm, and things kick off at midnight with an electric drag queen lip-sync show. The club is spread across three floors, and there are more relaxed lounge areas around the dance floor. As one of the most popular gay clubs in Bangkok, you might want to avoid going on a Saturday night if you don’t like dealing with large crowds.

Gay bars and clubs in Phuket

gay cruises thailand

Phuket has the second biggest LGBTQIA+ scene in Thailand (behind Bangkok). You’ll find most gay bars and clubs concentrated in Patong, a beach resort on the west coast of the island. Beyond the bars, Phuket is home to many beautiful beaches and attractions, such as the Big Buddha, historic Phuket Old Town and the Wat Chalong Buddhist temple.

gay cruises thailand

Located in Phuket’s Paradise Complex, the ZAG Club is one of Phuket’s most popular gay hotspots. It’s divided into a more laid-back bar/lounge area, dance floors and an exclusive VIP area. There’s also a terrace bar that spills out onto the street. It’s open from 8 pm to 2 am, and happy hour is between 8 pm and 10 pm.

Connect Bar & Restaurant

gay cruises thailand

Connect Bar & Restaurant is located right in the heart of the Paradise Complex. It’s one of the best places to meet gay people in Phuket. You’ll find a lot of travellers here, as it’s part of the popular Connect Guesthouse. Buffet nights on Thursdays and Sundays are a particular favourite.

Tangmo Club

gay cruises thailand

Tangmo Club has plenty of entertainment on offer every night. This club features drag queens, cabaret performers, comedians and more. Performers here are highly trained and deliver exceptional performances night after night. Inside, it’s cosy and dimly lit, perfect for settling in and enjoying a show. On the other hand, the outdoor terrace is great for people-watching fellow visitors in the Paradise Complex. Tangmo Club is open from 10 pm to 2 am every day of the week.

Gay clubs and bars in Koh Samet

gay cruises thailand

Koh Samet is often called Thailand’s ‘Gay Island’. Its proximity to Bangkok has helped it develop a thriving gay scene. There aren’t any gay-specific bars and clubs but there are plenty of gay-popular spots where you can meet LGBTQIA+ travellers and locals. Koh Samet is also home to stunning beaches and world-class resorts.

Tubtim Resort

gay cruises thailand

Tubtim Resort is the daytime hangout for gay travellers in Koh Samet. This resort has a fantastic restaurant, serving international and Thai cuisine. One reason many visitors love Tubtim? They’re happy for you to bring your own alcohol. But don’t worry, the bar has a great selection of drinks and cocktails for you to choose from as well. It has plenty of seating on the beach, so you can soak up the sun and fresh air.

Silver Sands

gay cruises thailand

This beachfront dance party is the highlight of Koh Samet’s gay nightlife. It’s particularly busy on weekends when tourists and Bangkok locals head to the island to party all night long. Located on Sai Keaw Beach, Silver Sands has plenty of benches for outdoor seating and plays a range of international and Thai music to keep the party going. It’s part of the Silver Sands Hotel, and during the daytime, Sai Keaw is a beautiful beach for swimming and sunbathing.

gay cruises thailand

Just under 2 hours from Bangkok by car, Pattaya is a popular beach resort destination with a few excellent hotspots for LGBTQIA+ travellers. The Jomtien Complex is a more laid-back affair, with cozy bars and relaxed entertainment. Boyztown has more of a club vibe, with lots of go-go dancer shows and drag performances.

Sunee Plaza is a ‘seedier’ part of the city that was once one of its most well-known gay areas. It’s had a number of closures in recent years, but some clubs are still going strong. Note: Pattaya is one of the main spots for gay sex workers in Thailand. You should be aware that sex work is illegal in Thailand, though in practice, this is rarely enforced. Most importantly, you should always ask for a photo ID if you have any doubts about whether or not someone is over 18.

Jomtien Complex

gay cruises thailand

The Jomtien Complex, near Dongtan Beach, is home to a number of gay bars. They tend to be a little more laid back than other bars in the area. There are also a few bars hosting cabaret shows and other live performances.

The Blue Hawaiian is a great low-key option where you can easily hold a conversation without having to compete with loud music. Dorothy’s Bar is a fantastic show venue, which hosts cabaret shows and other live events. There’s also a karaoke section, so when there are no performers, the patrons are the evening’s entertainment. Many, like Adonis Bar and Angel Bar, are open-air bars, perfect for warm evenings.

gay cruises thailand

Castro Bar is one of the best entertainment venues in Pattaya. Located in the Boyztown district, Castro Bar hosts drag shows, cabarets and more. There are usually several shows on each night, performed by incredible dancers and hilarious comedians. The bar opens around 4 pm and the entertainment starts at 11 pm. There’s also a patio bar that looks out onto the street.

Other Boyztown bars

gay cruises thailand

You’ll find a mix of different cabaret bars, drag shows, and go-go bars in Boyztown. They’re all quite close together, so many visitors will visit multiple bars over the course of one evening. Boyz Boyz Boyz was the first gay venue to open in Pattaya, and it’s still going strong decades later. Their cabaret performances usually start at midnight. Cupidol is a go-go dance bar that hosts regular entertainment along with special events.

LGBTQIA+ events and parties in Thailand

gay cruises thailand

Thailand is one of the best party destinations in the world and there are plenty of LGBTQIA+ parties and events during the year.

White Party Bangkok

gay cruises thailand

Visiting Thailand for New Year’s? Don’t miss out on Thailand’s biggest New Year’s LGBTQIA+ festival. In fact, White Party Bangkok is one of the largest LGBTQIA+ gatherings in the world. It runs over multiple days, usually from the 29th of December to the 1st of January. Each night will have a different theme and is hosted at a different location throughout Bangkok. White Party Bangkok is internationally renowned, so make sure you get your tickets early, especially if you’re after one of their VIP passes.

G Circuit Songkran

gay cruises thailand

The Songkran Festival is one of the biggest LGBTQIA+ circuit parties in the world, attracting attendees and performers from all over. It’s held in Bangkok and spread out over three days during the Thai New Year. The party usually starts just after midday and runs until the early hours of the morning.

Daytime Pool Parties are held at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, and nighttime events are held at the Bangkok Convention Centre. This is a massive event and Thailand is already particularly busy during the Thai New Year, so make sure you book flights and accommodation early.

Bangkok Pride Month

gay cruises thailand

Bangkok celebrates Pride all throughout the month of June. The Bangkok Pride Parade is usually held on the first Sunday of the month, and you’ll find plenty of afterparties in the evening throughout the city. The 2022 Pride march was the first official pride event in almost 16 years.

The Pride Cruise Party, on the Chao Phraya River, is held the following weekend and promises live entertainment, DJs, and a fashion show. W Bangkok Hotel will likely host a Pride Festival and a Pride Drag Brunch, both of which promise plenty of food, drinks and fun. In previous years, Kimpton Maa-Lai Hotel has hosted the LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, showcasing multiple queer-themed Thai films.

LGBTQIA+ hotels in Thailand

gay cruises thailand

Many of the best LGBTQIA+ or LGBTQIA-friendly hotels in Thailand are home to gay-popular bars, events and parties. We’ve highlighted just a few of the best resorts and hotels in each of the main LGBTQIA+ areas in Thailand.

LGBTQIA+ hotels in Bangkok

gay cruises thailand

So/ Sofitel Bangkok is only around a 10-minute walk from the array of bars and clubs on Silom Soi 2 and Silom Soi 4. Meanwhile, W Bangkok is an LGBTQIA+ friendly hotel that hosts some of the best LGBTQIA+ parties during Pride month.

LGBTQIA+ hotels in Phuket

gay cruises thailand

Aquarius Gay Guesthouse & Sauna is the only ‘men’s-only’ hotel in Phuket. It’s located right in the centre of Phuket’s gay scene, and the restaurant is a popular daytime hangout spot for locals. Nap Patong is another great option, conveniently located in the heart of Phuket’s Paradise Complex. Finally, Connect Guesthouse is the accommodation part of the popular Connect Bar.

LGBTQIA+ hotels in Pattaya

gay cruises thailand

The AGATE Pattaya Boutique Resort is a fantastic option close to Jomtien Beach and the Jomtien Complex. Pullman Pattaya Hotel G is a little further from the bars and clubs, but its location in the central, historic district is ideal for general sightseeing. LGBTQIA+ hotels in Koh Samet

gay cruises thailand

Tubtim Resort is home to one of Koh Samet’s most popular LGBTQIA+ hangout spots. Samed Pavilion Resort is right next to Silver Sands Bar, the island’s most popular gay bar.

Embark on an all-gay or LGBTQ-friendly cruise for excellent entertainment, food and excursions.

Whether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Travelers lounge on a gay cruise with VACAYA

Gabriel Goldberg | Courtesy of VACAYA

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Travelers on an all-gay cruise with Brand g Vacations pose in front of the Taj Mahal

Courtesy of Brand G Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Aerial shot of Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Apex at sunset

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Specifically marketed toward lesbians and LGBTQ women, Olivia has hosted more than 350,000 travelers by land and sea over five decades. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for "older, wiser lesbians"). Past cruisers on Olivia's voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises' Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line's Star Breeze in September. Other cruise itineraries include Alaska, the Greek Isles, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Aerial shot of Royal Caribbean International cruise ship

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

A party on board The Cruise With La Demence

Courtesy of The Cruise With La Demence

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Fares include all food and nonalcoholic beverages, plus access to all parties, shows and the onboard gym.

Source Journeys has been planning luxury vacations for LGBTQ travelers for more than 20 years. The Miami-based company, with the vision of founder and chief executive officer Craig Smith, offers small group land tours and full-charter cruises for like-minded travelers with a focus on giving back to the communities they visit. The company also supports LGBTQ organizations, such as the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign.

Past guests of their tours say their fellow travelers were as fun and interesting as the destinations. They appreciated the excellent personalized planning for the trips by Smith and his life partner, Rafael Rodriguez.

The company's cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura's new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. This ocean cruise scheduled in August is chartered on Star Clippers' masted sailing ship, Royal Clipper.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to gay cruising, gone are the days of discreet "Friends of Dorothy" meetups. The term – a euphemism that dates back to the 1950s – was once used to indicate gay social events on daily cruise line programs, without explicitly calling out members of the community on board. It's a far cry from today's LGBTQ cruising industry, which loudly and proudly celebrates passengers from all walks of life.

According to experts, LGBTQ cruising is a market that will only continue to grow. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

  • Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
  • Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.
