After you apply

On this page, your fingerprints and photo (biometrics), processing your visitor visa application, check your application status, if we approve your application, if we refuse your application.

Book your biometrics collection appointment as soon as you can to avoid processing delays.

Find out how to give biometrics

We’ll check your application to make sure you have all the documents you need.

If it's incomplete, your application may be refused.

We may also ask you to

  • go to an interview with our officials in your country
  • send more information
  • get a  medical exam
  • get a  police certificate

We’ll tell you what to do if you need to do any of these.

We process most applications in a few weeks or less.  Processing times  depend on the visa office and if you need to do any extra steps (listed above).

Use the application status tracker (opens in a new tab)    to get updates about your application. To create an account you need your:

  • unique client identifier (UCI)
  • application number

If you applied online

You’ll get 2 letters in your IRCC account:

  • a letter with instructions to submit your passport
  • our decision letter

This approval doesn’t mean you can travel to Canada. You need to wait until we put the visa in the passport you submit to us.

If you applied on paper

When your application is approved, any original documents, including your passport with the visa inside, will be returned to you.

You’ll get our decision in your IRCC account. This will explain why we refused your application.

An explanation of why your application was refused will be sent to you, along with any original documents, including your passport.

Basic entry requirements

To visit Canada, you will need to meet some basic requirements, such as:

  • have a valid travel document, such as a passport,
  • be in good health,
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions,
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country,
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit, and
  • have enough money for your stay. (The amount of money you will need can vary. It depends on things such as how long you will stay, and whether you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.)

Inadmissibility

Some people are inadmissible—they are not allowed to come to Canada. Several things can make you inadmissible, including involvement in criminal activity, in human rights violations or in organized crime.

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons. Find out more about inadmissibility .

How long you can stay

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

At the port of entry, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months. If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might also give you a document, called a visitor record, which will show the date you need to leave by.

If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. If you arrive at an airport that uses primary inspection kiosks , ask the border officer after you finish at the kiosk.

Canada's Tourist Visa: Your Questions Answered

Canada's Tourist Visa: Your Questions Answered

You may be wondering how you can visit Canada and what procedure you need to follow. Get ready to uncover all the answers as we dive into the details of tourist visas, from eligibility and application procedures to travel tips and restrictions.

What is Canada’s Tourist Visa?

In essence, it allows you to travel to and around Canada for a limited period, typically up to 6 months. It's important to note that while on a tourist visa, engaging in work or study activities is prohibited, aligning with the visa's intended scope and restrictions. Its primary purpose is to enable tourists to experience Canada's wonders and connect with its way of life.

What is the Difference Between a Tourist Visa and an eTA?

When planning a trip to Canada, it's crucial to understand the distinction between a Tourist Visa and an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). These two entry permits serve different purposes and apply to different travelers.

Tourist Visa

A Tourist Visa, also known as a Visitor Visa, is a traditional visa that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a temporary stay, typically up to six months. It's a document placed in your passport and is obtained through a Canadian consulate or embassy. Tourist Visas are typically required for citizens of countries that are not visa-exempt or eligible for an eTA.

eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

An eTA, on the other hand, is an electronic entry requirement designed for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air. It's a simpler and faster way to gain entry clearance than a full-fledged visa. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's crucial to note that the eTA is only applicable if you're flying to Canada; if you're arriving by land or sea, you won't need an eTA.

  • Thread starter lava18
  • Start date Feb 2, 2022

I am applying for a tourist visa from USA. I received a Passport Request Letter from IRCC on Jan 27, 2022, to submit my passport to VAC to finalize the processing of my application. I would like to avail the Two-way courier service offered by VFS Shipping submit my passport to the NYC VAC and receive it back. I am unable to create the VFS shipping label. As instructed on https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/can/news/reopening-notice I tried emailing at [email protected] but haven't received any response since last 3 days. Can someone please help?

I was able to create the shipping labels through https://www.vfsglobal.ca/PostalAppointment/ The website is a bit glitchy (had to use different browsers, clear cache, cookies, etc.) but it worked out after a few tries. Hope this helps.

Hi Iava, Did you find where to send in the US? Or do we have to go to VAC directly?

Hello, I submitted application as a group with 2 applications. Should I send passports in 2 packages or can be sent in one package? Any idea

I am trying to book 2 Way courier service for my temporary residence visa stamping in US. Few questions : 1) I can pick any center between NY and LA, correct? any preferences. 2) Application category will be "Original Passport Submission" and not "Temporary Resident Visa", correct? Please help.

Hi, Can someone please help? My sister in law is trying to submit her passport for stamping to NYC VAC. She was charged $57 for two way courier service and now they're asking her to include a money order or cashier's check for $22 as passport transmission fee. What's the difference between these fees and why is this courier service so ridiculously expensive? Almost as expensive as the visa application itself.

I'm not short of money. I just want to understand what those different fees are and whether I'm being charged correctly.

Can22 said: Hi Is this for TRV passport submission or the PR passport submission. For TRV like work visa they have mentioned Passport transmission fee is exempted in website Click to expand...
sarvesh90 said: Hi Thanks. Can you please share the link to where they say this? Click to expand...
Can22 said: We were given slip from the NY VAC in that its mentioned. This is applicable only if you have given Biometric in NY VAC. Otherwise has to pay this package transmission fee of 22.80 $ as Money order https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/can/additional-services Label creation website also its mentioned clearly. Its like the processing fee for VAC I think, the courier charge is Fedex courier charge for overnight shipment, nothing to do with VAC as such Click to expand...

Hi, I got a similar response saying I need to send VAC fee by money order for $ 22.80. can someone please help me on where to submit the money order? whom/what should the money order be addressed to - what should be written on the money order? I need to submit the VAC consent form. Where can I find it? could someone please direct me to the consent form. The VFS page is confusiong and the additional services page does not have all of this information. Their customer service is terrible. None picks up the calls. No agent is available for live chat and of course nobody has responded to y emails. Thanks in advance. Any help is appreciated.

Hello All, Glad I found this group. Can someone please answer? I have stopped my application process due to the same. But in my case I was able to download the label for shipping. Do we also get the return label? or is it generated by VAC?. I have only one label that was generated for outbound which is shipping to Canada VAC. Thank you! Mahaveer
