I am visiting the U.S. and I want to come to Canada. Do I need an eTA?

Help Centre what do you need help with?

Most travellers need a visitor visa or an eTA to travel to, or transit through, Canada.

What you need depends on:

  • the type of travel document you will travel with;
  • the country that issued your travel document;
  • your nationality; and
  • how you will travel to Canada.

Before you apply , find out what you need .

New entry requirement now in effect

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada by air. Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid Canadian visa. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens , and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for an eTA.

  • Online application submitted from US to Canada temporary visa ( Visitor ) on 11/26/2022 in the portal
  • 100 CAD for Visitor Visa
  • 85 CAD for Biometric
  • Got my biometric collection request immediately and submitted the biometric info on 12/06/2022 by booking my nearest Application Support Center ( Which are US gov related and support Canada gov applications biometric collections ).
  • Got the Biometric confirmation letter on 01/10/2023 in the portal, also received Original Passport request form in the portal on same date.
  • Starting passport request for Canada Visit visa today (01/15/2023) in the portal.
  • Find any available VAC centers in my current resident country ( Which is US ). So, I used the link provided in my passport return request document. Which is > https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/account/where-submit-passport.html
  • the passport request letter you received from IRCC;
  • the visa application centre (VAC) fees (VACs charge service fees to send your passport to the visa office);
  • your contact information, including your email, phone number and return address; and
  • the VAC consent forms (available on their Web site).
  • Find your closest VAC
  • Finding VAC consent form is tricky, I am able find it from the new VISA application link > https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/can/apply-visa and second option of " Begin your application " section contained hyper link on instructions about this step.
  • I downloaded that consent form and filled it electronically and saved it in my local for the time of courier
  • Also, I created a simple PDF with word doc of my contact information as requested from above point 6.2.3
  • Now I clicked on Find your closest VAC and navigated to VAC location selection page. Where I filtered the NewYork location which is 1 out of 2 (California is the other one). I click on the hyperlink of country column and it navigated me to > https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/can/
  • After some through view of the website menu and home page options, I went to " Additional services " which I need to go.
  • Can deposit Cashier/Banker check or Money order. Payment instruments should be made in favor of “VFS Services (USA) Inc.” Instrument prepared and sent with incorrect name or any other name will not be entertained.
  • **Two-way courier service : To avail this service, please click here
  • Link is taking me to a vfsglobal.ca portal postal appointment route with logIn to that account page (Didn't pasted the session query param unwanted full URL). URL > https://www.vfsglobal.ca/PostalAppointment/Account/RegisteredLogin?******************
  • Since I don't have an account created one by clicking on " New User? " with same email (I though it should needed to pull in some info from gc.ca portal) and then activated the account by email verification link click.
  • While freaking out and doing some google, I found this stack-exchange post says don't create Two way courier with Fedex > https://travel.stackexchange.com/questions/135383/sending-passport-for-canada-visa-process-to-new-york#:~:text=Canadian Visa Application Centre – New,by mail or in person .
  • Somehow this vfsglobal portal is only providing Two-Way courier with Fedex services. As this is a private organization and that stack-exchange post is old ( around 2019, and yes since I am in 2023, 2019 is old to me ) I went with only provided option .
  • Original Passport Submission
  • Study permit
  • Temporary resident
  • Work Permit
  • After submitting those options, it is asking me for " Add Applicants". I clicked the button and it populated most of my info except my Date of Birth , I just entered it and it added my as application for that two-way courier service
  • Then in the same page, it asked me choose more options like : Courier service with only one drop down option of VFS Offered Courier service and the second one is Courier provider which is Fedex only one selected as default and unchangeable. I click on continue and it showed me fee to be paid in USD $77.00. Click continue or submit (I forgot !!!)
  • Don't be ideal on this portal, you just need to select quickly and proceed. Cause I was typing here and waiting there caused my session timed out. So, below are the next steps I did.
  • Provide your shipping address. ( I paused for a second on what is shipping address is it VAC center or Canada visa processing center or my home address. Then my introvert mind reminded me that it is my Home address as the courier service knows where to send but not where to ship it back once he process completed. So, I entered my shipping address )
  • Then it asked me to pay for the $77.00, I used my Apple credit card to pay for it ( Greedy to get cash back - 2 ). Then it navigated me to application reference number of this Fedex service and also provided me a receipt of Application confirmation to download the payment confirmation and address to be returning. I downloaded that for reference.
  • Now in the below text it is instructing me to choose a left side menu option of Download Courier labels and recommended me to print it for next steps. Also given this Note : System will generate only incoming label (from You to CVAC). Outgoing label will be generated by CVAC on the day of dispatch of your documents back to you (from CVAC to you). For detailed info, refer instructions on application confirmation letter.
  • Now, I clicked on Download Courier Label. H ere it asks for application number (which you saved earlier), Email and phone number to get the courier label with transaction ID. Make sure you downloaded it and saved it properly ( before you call it a day and going to have some fun in youtube or twitch ).
  • What is the amount and how do we pay for the VAC to process my original passport from above point 6.2.2 which i noticed ?
  • As I already paid, Visa Application fee of $100, Do I still need to pay for the above VAC point 6.2.2 ?
  • What is the amount to be paid for " VFS Services (USA) Inc. " for providing this portal with courier service from above point 9.1 ?
  • Address: 145 WEST 45th street, 4th floor New York, NY 10036, USA
  • Name: VFS Services (USA) Inc.
  • Money: 23.30
  • 2 - passport request letter\
  • 2 - VISA application center fees (Money order or cashier check)
  • 2 - my contact information
  • 2 - VAC consent forms
  • 1 - passport

Find a visa application centre

Before you apply and go to a VAC, make sure you

  • their hours and services
  • are eligible to enter Canada
  • know about the changes to the application process

You can submit your passport to a VAC only after you receive a request letter or email from us.

  • Some VACs accept passports sent by mail or courier only .
  • Check your VAC's website for information on how to submit your passport or documents to IRCC from outside Canada.

Visa application centres (VACs) are private companies that have formal contracts with the Government of Canada. They

  • securely send your passport to the visa office
  • are official locations to give your biometrics (fingerprints and a photo)
  • are located around the world
  • speak local languages
  • go to a VAC that isn’t in your country of residence
  • either call, email or visit VACs in person (check the VAC’s website before you go)

You need to give your biometrics

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

You need to book an appointment to give your biometrics.

Find out who needs to give biometrics .

VAC services

All VACs also

  • securely return passport and decision documents
  • provide access to a computer to apply online
  • provide application photograph and photocopy services
  • give updates via text message
  • accept payment of application fees
  • use courier services to return passports and decision envelopes
  • accept permanent resident travel document applications

If there's no VAC in the country or territory you're applying from, you can go to any other VAC location .

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) told CBC News Friday that it recently purchased a lavish three-bedroom condo in New York to be used as the official residence for the Consulate General of Canada in New York.

The purchase was first reported by Crain's and The Real Deal, a real estate news organization. On Friday, the New York Post reported the condo cost $6.63 million US, roughly $9 million Cdn.

The 3,600-square-foot condo is at 111 West 57th Street, also known as Steinway Tower, in midtown Manhattan. The building is one of several luxury skyscrapers in an area known as Billionaires' Row.

According to an online listing , the condo's "elegant entry foyer offers white macauba stone floors, and the stunning powder room is finished in jewel onyx.

"A spacious living room provides southern exposure and custom smoke gray oak floors in a parquet pattern, while the adjacent dining room provides eastern exposure and plenty of space for entertaining."

Residents of the building also have access to an on-site padel court, a golf simulator and a children's play room.

Canada's consul general in New York provides diplomatic services to Canadians abroad, including passport, visa and immigration services. The consul general's office can also notarize documents, provide immigration services for foreign study and help Canadians vote from abroad.

In a statement, GAC said it provides residences to the "Heads of Mission," which include ambassadors, high commissioners and consuls general, based on a "real property policy" that considers the importance of the mission in the network.

"The residence currently used for the Head of Mission and Consul General in New York was purchased in 1961," GAC said. "Last refurbished in 1982, the apartment does not meet new building codes nor the GAC's standards."

GAC said modernizing the existing residence, which is located on Park Avenue, would require "significant investments." It instead recommended relocating to a "new, smaller, more suitable, and more economical apartment."

"In addition of representing a saving opportunity of Cad 2M$+ for Canadian taxpayers, it will also reduce ongoing maintenance costs and property taxes, supports future program needs, and meets representational requirements," GAC said.

The New York Post originally reported King Charles purchased the unit, as records it obtained listed the new owner as "His Majesty the King in Right of Canada, Represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs."

A follow-up report included a comment from Robert McCubbing, senior trade commissioner and director of trade and investment at the Canadian consulate in New York, who said listing King Charles III is standard procedure as he is Canada's head of state.

McCubbing also said King Charles would not use the residence himself.

The current Canadian consul general in New York City is Tom Clark, who was a longtime broadcast journalist at CTV News and Global. He was named to the post in February 2023.

CBC News has reached out to Clark and the Consulate General of Canada in New York for comment.
