Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park in Stirlingshire is Scotland’s only safari park. This family-friendly attraction is home to over 350 animals, many of which are free to roam the 120-acre estate. Visitors can enjoy a drive through several enclosures before entering a large animal-themed adventure park that features a zoo, fun-fair rides, restaurants and cafes, and play parks.

Blair Drummond Safari Park

Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, located near Stirling, is the only safari park in Scotland, and it’s also one of the country’s busiest tourist attractions. Covering more than 120 acres, the park contains several enclosures that are home to a variety of animals, mainly from Africa and Asia, along with a few inhabitants from closer to home.

Visitors can drive through each reserve in their car and get some great close-up views of the free-roaming animals before heading into the adventure park on foot. Once inside the park, there are lots of attractions to keep visitors entertained such as Lemur Land, Chimp Island, the bird of prey habitat, and Pets Farm, to name a few.

Other attractions include fairground rides and amusements, a pirate ship and adventure fort, as well as a boat safari, pedal boats, dodgems, a rollercoaster, and a carousel. Meanwhile, food and drink are catered for with a restaurant and several snack outlets.

Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park also has a more serious side as it’s involved with conservation initiatives like the Giraffe Conservation Foundation  and the AfriCat Foundation . In addition, the park’s education team regularly gives talks on the elephants, tigers, rhinos, and other animals they care for.

2: The park isn’t just about animal viewing; it also offers adventure and play areas designed for children. These include outdoor playgrounds, a giant astraglide slide, pedal boats, and a flying fox zip wire.

1: The park participates in breeding programmes for endangered species and works with various conservation projects. Visitors can learn about these efforts and gain insight into the importance of preserving our natural world through educational talks and interactive displays.

Tourist Information

There are a huge number of activities for families to enjoy during their visit to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, although the highlight has to be driving through the reserves to get up close and personal with the animals on display. There are four main reserves to drive through, and each one showcases animals from various parts of the world in habitats that have been designed to be as close as possible to their own natural environments.

The African reserve features non-carnivorous native African species like zebras and white rhinoceros, while the lion reserve is home to a pride of African lions. The lion reserve, in particular, is a great enclosure as it features a raised walkway that can be accessed on foot from inside the park, so you can get a different perspective on the lions once you’ve finished the drive-through safari.

The other two reserves are the Monkey Jungle, which houses a troop of Barbary macaques, and the Asian Reserve, which contains herbivores native to Asia such as deer and camels. All the reserves are well-maintained, and the animals appear to be very happy in their habitats, which is great to see.

Blair Drummond Giraffe

Once you’ve finished the safari, it’s time to leave the car behind and set out on foot into the adventure park where you’ll discover various enclosures that are more like the ones you’d find in a zoo. In this area, visitors will see African elephants, rhinos, and giraffes alongside great apes on Chimp Island and ring-tailed lemurs in Lemur Land.

Next to Lemur Land is a lake that you can explore on a pedal boat, but if you prefer a more leisurely cruise you can take a ride on the boat safari which sails around Chimp Island. I highly recommend taking the boat trip as it’s a great way to see the park’s troop of chimpanzees foraging about in the undergrowth.

If you have children and they’re not too exhausted after seeing all the animals, you can take them to a couple of other areas to burn off their remaining energy. First is an enormous wooden fort that has a bird’s nest and slides, and second is a pirate ship that can be found inside a giant sandpit.

Both play parks have picnic benches and BBQ areas nearby, or you can use the on-site restaurant and cafe. There’s also an outside dining area that allows parents to keep watch while the kids are having fun.

Things to Do

Safari Drive-Thru : Embark on an exciting self-drive safari to see zebras, ostriches, bison, and monkeys roam free in the park. Don’t forget to make sure all your windows are closed as you drive, and if you have a convertible, make sure the roof is up before you enter the lion enclosure!

Keeper Talks : The team at Blair Drummond Safari Park holds daily talks about the most popular animals, including what they like to eat, where they come from, and how they manage to survive in the challenging conditions of the modern world. Conservation is a key aspect of the talks, but they’re also fun and engaging for children.

Sea Lion Show: Enjoy the clever California sea lions’ daily live training demonstrations as they display their agility skills. The keepers also provide insightful commentary about the natural behaviours of these animals in a show that’s easily one of the most popular in the entire park.

Bird of Prey Centre : See an incredible collection of eagles, hawks, and owls at the Bird of Prey Centre. The daily flying demonstrations are a must-see, as you can watch these magnificent creatures soar through the sky and learn about their crucial role in the ecosystem.

Adventure Playground : The park’s adventure playground is a fun-filled area with a fortress, pirate ship, and giant slides. Kids can burn off energy while parents relax in a nearby seating area with a coffee in hand, knowing their children are in a safe and secure environment. The playground is designed to be inclusive, so children of all abilities can enjoy it.

Blair Drummond

Blair drummond estate.

The Blair Drummond Estate lies about a mile south of Doune on the A84 Callander to Stirling road.

The earliest known owners of the present lands of Blair Drummond were the Muchet family (a name originating in France) from whom the property was acquired by the Drummond family in the 14th century. Ownership later moved piecemeal to George Drummond, 6th Laird of Blair, until in 1714 his estate became known as the Barony of Blair Drummond.

Blair Drummond House

The current mansion was built around 1868, (replacing an earlier one dating from 1715, which was nearby but slightly lower down the slope).  The house stands on a high point above the river valley, across which the parklands extend.  This gives superb views over the estate, but also shows off the grandeur of the house, as can be seen from the photograph below.  There is a suitably grand stable block, which was a requirement in those days for the carriages and horses.  This is a few decades older than the current house and has a clock-tower which was added as a fashionable afterthought.  There is also an ice-house (no fridges then!) and an unusual octagonal storehouse.

In the 18th century the house was owned by Henry Hume, Lord Kames, an enlightened agricultural improver.  He and later his son, converted the deep mosses of the local “carse” land to a combination of productive farmland and the area now known as Flanders Moss , which is a National Nature Reserve.   He is also noted for helping to introduce the ‘natural style’ of landscaping to Scotland.

The present attractive landscape at Blair Drummond was laid out in the 18th century to the design of Lord Kames, although incorporating earlier formal landscaping.  Beyond the more formal gardens, there are some lovely wooded areas with winding walks and many mature deciduous trees.  There is a large serpentine lake, and beyond that farmed pastureland.

In 1912 the estate was put up for sale and was purchased by the uncle of the present owner, Sir John Muir. The estate has continued to be run commercially and part of the parkland to the south-east of the house is run as the much-loved Blair Drummond Safari and Leisure Park , owned by the Muir family.  This opened in 1970 and has an area of about 49ha (120 acres).

To read about the amazing buried treasure found here, see the Blair Drummond Hoard

The Camphill Trust

In 1975, the house and 17 acres of grounds were sold to the Camphill Trust as a Residential Home. Sir John and Lady Muir have retained the remainder of the estate and now live at Bankhead House, to the west of the Blair Drummond policies.

The Camphill Trust runs the house and the other purpose-built buildings as an assisted living facility, many of the residents having complex learning disabilities.  Camphill Blair Drummond is a community of over 200 people, including residents, day students, employees and volunteers (from many parts of the world) each one contributing in their own way to the life, work and success of the community.

newspaper essay in english

Importance of Newspaper Essay: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Newspaper is an important media. Its role in the making of the nation or the state cannot be denied. Newspaper lays emphasis on democracy by way of representing public opinions quite objectively. Its approach is certainly impersonal. Objective criticisms of state affairs lead the public to choose the right ways and to uphold the right ideas.

Importance:

Social, political, economical, and other changes take place due to the awareness of the people of a state or a country. And newspaper enables people to be aware of all phenomena which are happening in the country and abroad. Besides, newspaper presents the past and the present days, thereby helping us draw a contrast between the past and the present world. By this way, newspaper helps people predict the future.

Thus, reading of a newspaper strengthens one’s consciousness of the world. If one negates the newspaper, there is little doubt that he or she must retard gradually. The utility of newspaper is not only informative but also constructive because it presents diverse, contradictory views to form a general and well-accepted opinion.

Newspaper is also a common medium of advertisement. Popular brands use to promote their product through newspaper advertisements.

Disadvantages:

But unfortunately, most of the newspapers have now become commercial. Advertisements have been quite oddly covering most of the pages of a newspaper. Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

Thus, the news had a grain of truth and a lot of self-manufacture.

“In these times we fight for ideas and newspapers are our fortresses.” – Heinrich Heine

The invention of printing press created conditions that could satisfy this need in a more systematic manner. News and views went together. It is not possible to bring an item of information without expressing the views of the person reporting the news.

In this way, newspaper should be news carriers, not to bring an item of information without expressing the views of the person reporting the news. In this way, newspapers become not only news carriers but also creators of public opinion. The editorial of newspapers is in a way, responsible for forming public opinion and providing guidance to public thinking. The .critical remarks of the editor stimulate our views on the subject. We must always remember that the editors of renowned papers are statesmen of no mean repute. They are specialists of world history and also completely aware of the various problems of their own country. Reading their views has an educative value.

The success of a democracy is dependent on an enlightened voter and the voter receives his education from a close and critical study of the opinions, expressed in the editorials.

A newspaper plays a vital role in a democratic society. It helps to mould and shape a public opinion. It regulates our thoughts. Actually, it serves the purpose of a book, pulpit, platform and forum all rolled into one. It discusses questions on various subjects like religion, literature, politics, commerce, science, agriculture and so on. It can be aptly called ‘The people’s university.

A newspaper relieves a person of monotony of life. In the pages of a newspaper, a person tired of his day’s work finds rest and entertainment.

All the above advantages of a newspaper are there but there are some disadvantages to it as well. Some newspapers cater to vulgar taste and misguide people. Trying to be sensational, they have given rise to what has been called ‘The Yellow Press.’ It creates in the ordinary reader an unhealthy craze for sensational information. They describe social scandals, spicy gossips, in a tantalising way.

Another serious defect in a newspaper is to supress news or to publish concocted reports in the interest of a party or an individual.

It is the sacred duty of a newspaper’s editor to be impartial and objective. The editor should edit only in the interest of truth and fair play. Newspapers should be news carriers not news makers.

Below we have given a short essay on Newspaper Advantages and Disadvantages is for Classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. This short essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 6 and below.

Newspapers should be news carriers not news makers. The press (i.e. the newspapers) is said to be the fourth power of the state, the first three powers being the legislative, the executive, and the judiciary. It is their duty to present the latest news with complete objectivity. It should not abuse its power in leading public opinion. It can damage the country’s prosperity and security.

The power of the press is great, and its responsibilities are greater. It can easily act successfully as a social reformer. If it makes the wrong use of its powers, it can cause immense harm to the nation. If these drawbacks are checked from time to time, no doubt the newspapers have more power than any other authority to help their country and the countrymen.

Cobden has remarked correctly that-

“A newspaper should be the maximum of information and minimum of comment”.

Newspapers have been an integral part of human civilization for centuries, serving as a crucial source of information, entertainment, and public discourse. The origins of newspapers can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where scribes would handwrite news on papyrus scrolls or wooden tablets. However, the modern newspaper as we know it today emerged in the 15th century with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

The first printed newspaper is believed to be the Relation, published in Strasbourg, Germany, in 1609. This was followed by the Avisa Relation oder Zeitung, published in Germany in 1618, which is considered the first regularly printed newspaper. From there, newspapers spread rapidly across Europe and eventually to the Americas, evolving into a powerful medium for disseminating news, opinions, and advertisements.

The evolution of newspapers has been a remarkable journey, reflecting the changing societal landscape and technological advancements. Initially, newspapers were handwritten or printed on simple presses, with limited circulation and content. As printing technology improved and literacy rates increased, newspapers became more widely available and influential.

The 19th century witnessed a significant transformation in the newspaper industry with the introduction of new printing techniques, such as the rotary press and linotype machines, which allowed for faster and more efficient production. This period also saw the rise of investigative journalism, with newspapers playing a crucial role in exposing societal injustices and holding authorities accountable.

The 20th century brought about further innovations, including the use of photographs, color printing, and the integration of radio and television news broadcasts. The advent of the internet and digital technologies in the late 20th century revolutionized the newspaper industry once again, leading to the emergence of online editions, multimedia content, and new business models.

The Dismissal of the Trump Classified Documents Case Is Deeply Dangerous

A multiple-exposure image of the special counsel Jack Smith with images of a flag appearing over one side.

By Neal K. Katyal

Mr. Katyal is a professor at Georgetown University Law Center.

Judge Aileen Cannon’s decision to throw out serious national-security criminal charges in the classified documents case against Donald Trump is legally unsupported, ignores decades of precedent and is deeply dangerous.

At a time when Americans need to trust their institutions, her decision to declare that the appointment of the special counsel overseeing the case, Jack Smith, “violates the appointments clause of the United States Constitution” will undermine that trust and the legitimacy of high-level investigations in the eyes of many Americans.

Her decision is quite unlikely to survive the tests of time, or even the appeal Mr. Smith plans to make to the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. But it will further delay a case that has moved so slowly under her direction that it was already virtually certain it would never go to a jury before Election Day.

Judge Cannon asserts that no law of Congress authorizes the special counsel. That is palpably false. The special counsel regulations were drafted under specific congressional laws authorizing them.

Since 1966, Congress has had a specific law , Section 515, giving the attorney general the power to commission attorneys “specially retained under authority of the Department of Justice” as “special assistant[s] to the attorney general or special attorney[s].” Another provision in that law said that a lawyer appointed by the attorney general under the law may “conduct any kind of legal proceeding, civil or criminal,” that other U.S. attorneys are “authorized by law to conduct.”

Yet another part of that law, Section 533, says the attorney general can appoint officials “to detect and prosecute crimes against the United States.” These sections were specifically cited when Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Mr. Smith as a special counsel. If Congress doesn’t like these laws, it can repeal them. But until then, the law is the law.

Long and Short Speech on Importance of Newspaper

Newspapers are distributed and sold all across the world. Media is the fourth pillar of democracy, and newspapers play an important role in nation-building and spreading knowledge among the people. It makes people aware of what’s going on all around the world. Here we have provided both long and short Speech on Newspapers for students of classes 5 to 12 along with 10 lines for Speech on the Importance of Newspapers for students of classes 1 to 5.

Long Speech on Newspaper

Today, I am here to deliver a speech on ‘newspapers’. Newspapers are one of the world's most important forms of communication. They are present virtually in every language. The newspaper provides us with news, perspectives, reviews, and previews. The term NEWS is often understood to be North, East, West, and South. This implies that newspapers provide us with information and news from all corners of the world on various topics.

Newspapers also provide us with articles on all kinds of subjects, such as political, social, economic, commercial, sports, education, health, etc. There are numerous columns dedicated to various subjects in the newspapers. We have a marriage, editorial, readers, jobs, and other columns in them.

The world's burning topics are debated in the newspapers. In them, elaborate papers by practitioners and specialists are often published. They also consist of the opinions and views of the reader. Newspapers are a very strong means to educate and relate with the masses. They bring a lot of ads that draw consumers' attention. To run a publication, an advertisement is required. As they serve as powerful shifts in public opinion, newspapers hold the power to make or alter a government. They also include eminent scholars' book reviews of literary, historical, and other works.

The opinions expressed in newspapers must not deceive us. As certain newspapers can be prejudiced, we must weigh them on the scale of justification. Typically, however, newspapers are effective tools for spreading literacy. In newspapers, children can enjoy the cartoon columns, and children can submit their sketches to be published in newspapers. So, in our culture, newspapers are very useful.

In 59 B.C., the first established newspaper was introduced. Julius Caesar in Rome introduced the newspaper 'Acta Diurna' in order to make people aware of social and political activities. It was formerly used for metal or stone carving and was limited to certain special cities. It is now available digitally on your tablets. The newspaper's history is very vast and fascinating. It played an important role in the independence of India, along with providing information.

Where the newspaper has many benefits, on one hand, there are also some limitations on the other. Newspapers often use fabricated and old news to improve their reputation. While individuals have to pay the newspaper a monthly fee, advertisement is the primary medium. As a result, the newspapers publish the advertisements without authenticity and are therefore eliminated by requesting readers to act with their discretion. Because of this, the masses often have to take on heavy losses sometimes.

Our touch would be cut off from the planet without the newspaper. The newspaper, of course, is not just knowledge and advertisement, but also a strong and all-encompassing means to share your thoughts and to enter the world with those thoughts.

Short Speech on Importance of Newspaper

Today, I am here to deliver a speech on the Importance of newspapers. One of the main Mass Media outlets is a newspaper. It includes knowledge that is important to society. It has different columns, including national news, political news, local-news, news about crime, entertainment news, editorial columns, etc.

Newspapers are printed in Hindi, English, Urdu, and different regional languages in India. For an essay, an average paper contains a minimum of 500 words. The average cap for a website ranges from 20 to 25 pages. For printing paper, black ink is used. Newspapers are usually printed on a white, grey, or off-white backdrop.

There are colourful pictorial depictions in newspapers. Newspapers are useful for any age group as it provides ads for jobs, real estate, marriage, and it features different educational columns for children. The word Newspaper is taken from the paper's Latin word "Papyrus" which refers to paper.

There's one sure thing. For several more years to come, the dominance of newspapers will continue unchallenged. Given that online newspapers and their usage are growing by leaps and bounds, conventional newspapers need to make improvements in the modes of presentation, appearance and offer diversity in content and even paper size. Many newspapers are doing this effectively as well.

There is, however, one field that has been struck by hard times. That's the factor in reputation. News that arrived in a major newspaper had the ring of authority about it in the past. But with sting operations, paid news, and political agendas, reporting habits are heavily influenced; objectivity, fact, and facts are often undermined, if not always.

But it won't take anything away from being a watchdog in democratic settings for newspapers. It is also called the Fourth Estate; the government, the executive, and the judiciary are the other powers. Newspapers can voice the masses' heartfelt appeal, organize public opinion for or against governments and unite people behind dignified social movements as well. One reason why regimes are turning against newspapers and seeking to suppress the voices of dissent.

Internet vs Newspaper in the Digital Era

With the advent of Computers, sociologists could have hardly imagined the way in which it would one day revolutionise our day-to-day lives. While everyone was hopeful of this technological intervention, anyone hardly understood the depth with which it would penetrate our psyche, fully changing our ways of thinking.

One such entanglement was the power of the internet (which sprouted in the late 90s and began to dig deep in the 2000s) and the news world. This amalgamation has had its own set of attributes, never before known to mankind. The format of news media and the way we consume it would change in such a way that it spread like wildfire with little authenticity in its flame.

More people now consume internet news than the traditional held in hand newspaper. Even with all its allure, from high definition printing, gossip articles, columns for beauty and lifestyle, there has been a decline in its viewership. Most people opine that they prefer on-your-fingertip news over going through long pages of articles. Time is scarce and people find it easier to scroll through a blog than read a newspaper.

At the same time, internet news is quick and more up-to-date about all current affairs around the globe. Perhaps, in the race of information, Twitter wins over the New York Times. Not only the millennials but even the older generations seem to take solace on their iPad when it comes to their daily share of news. This argument has been supported by various survey groups who found that the internet users in the age group of 70-75 years old considerably increased from 26% to a whopping 45% within four years. Factually speaking, today 4% of the entire internet base consists of 73+-year-olds.

But how does this affect the quality of news we consume today as compared to our earlier generations? Well, the answer may lie in the statistics that behold the sight of ruthless misinformation around us. Today, 23% of adult users on the internet have unknowingly become perpetrators of misinformation by sharing unauthentic news to family and friends without a second glance at its source. Around 74% of them believe that they are at the receiving end of fake news, hoaxes, and misplaced information. Fake news spreads fast and easily.

Internet news is free of cost is binged wildly. There have been an increased number of news writers for online articles. Authentic newspaper houses have also tried to foray into the online market but who would pay to read a piece of news that is freely available elsewhere! At the same time, authentic news journalists can not be expected to write for free, especially for their hard-earned investigative news and ground reports. And while the argument seems valid, it may be a little too late to reverse this situation now.

The last argument put forth by some is that newspapers (being made of paper obtained from trees) are not environmentally friendly. They require tonnes of wood logs, electricity along with an elaborate system (network of people who handle middle operations) from manufacturing to delivery. A lot of countries are already backing the idea of going paperless in as many ways as possible. And while newspapers are here to stay, they would do little without major reforms.
