The Safari Club is Closed… OR The Death of Some Oregon History

The Safari Club has closed…

The Safari Club was opened in 1970 by an Estacadian (or “Esta-COD-an” as my brother would say) timber baron named Glen Park. Over six years, Mr. Park went on 23 hunting expeditions, to six different countries, and shot a shit ton of wild beasts. A placard in the Club calls Mr. Park “the most active and outstanding hunter in the United States.” I don’t have much else to compare it with, but judging by the number of dead stuffed animals around the place, that placard may be right, Dude… The Big O published a pretty good piece about the Safari Club in 2011 . It was a bar with a whole bunch of dead, exotic beasts from all over the world – tastefully taxidermied into “natural” scenes. Like giant dioramas. A hyena fighting with some big cat. Two tigers engaged in mortal combat. A polar scene with bears and other beasts just doing their snowy thing. It was drama. It was the survival of the fittest. It was an odd display of outdoorsy opulence. But above all, it was genuine…

My history with The Safari Club is, I guess I’d say “cloudy,” at best. I really don’t recall too much about the few times I went there in the early 90s. Mostly drunken stops on the way back into town, and Craig’s memorable BAD TRIP on some wicked LSD there – yeah, it got real bad…

Recently, I was an award for Know Your City’s Tom McCall Kickstarter drive for their new Tom McCall comic . So about 10 days ago, we took a little tour out to McIver park, and I talked about Vortex 1 . We stopped off for drinks afterwards at The Safari Club, and sat around with beers and Jamesons talking Tom McCall and People’s Army Jamboree. Looking back on it now – the writing was on the wall – one server running the kitchen and the floor, out of tater tots, two orders of fries were so miniscule that we were not charged for the fare.

So is my subtitle a little too melodramatic? Is this REALLY The Death of Some Oregon History? I mean, maybe… It’s not like Dr. John McLoughlin ever spent the night at The Safari Club, or William Ladd’s corpulent yet well preserved corpse was stashed by the polar bears, and I’m pretty sure that DB Cooper never spent a single pilfered 20 at this watering hole. So in that sense, this really isn’t a historical Oregon locale…

But it IS a part of that Oregon weirdness, and it’s sad to see that slipping away. And I’m not talking some hipster ironic weirdness – or even iconic for that matter (you and your fucking wolf sweatshirt). It’s just weird because it is so Oregon – that’s what I’m getting at…

I texted about the closure with my fellow historian friend Finn John . When I commented that it was sad to see such cool Oregon shit go away, Finn said “I know, right? Applebee’s can only get so quirky…” And that’s EXACTLY the point! The Safari Clubs, The Church of Elvises, The Quality Pies, The goddamnned Organ Grinder Pizzas – all of that shit that is weird and crazy and Oregon just goes away. And homogenized or gentrified or haute cuisine establishments fill those empty spaces. Sanitized. Marketable. Trendy. The Old Oregon voids are filled with something that will never recount what had been in that location.

And it’s not wrong. Not in the least. We live in a free fucking market economy. That’s the way it works. If you can’t pay your bills, you gots to go! Let Bunk Sandwiches open a new spot. They’ll likely do a better job (financially) than the previous establishment did, and they won’t serve FSA freezer to fryer mini-corn dogs either (Son goes: *sob!*). But in that free market turning & churning, a little of our History – fuck – a little of Our State’s Soul – is lost…

So I call on you Dear Ass Kicker – GO to those Old, Weird Oregon places! Do it this weekend! Get some breakfast at Tosis* , have a beer at Oney’s , drop a few singles at Mary’s Club . Enjoy these Oregon Wierdnesses while you still can! Have a sense of urgency about it, but once you are up-in-that-historical-piece, go all in and just dig it! Really immerse yourself, talk to the folks at the bar, walk around the establishment and take it all in. Revel in it! Cause when they’re gone, Baby – they are fucking gone. And they take the mini-corn dogs with ’em…

[Note: I have corresponded with Cindy, one of the recent owners of The Safari Club. I told her I wanted to bring a bus tour out there, and tried to get her to open for a night. To have drinks and tater tots, and yes, goddamn mini-corn dogs. She said they were closed (which I knew), so I am not terribly optimistic that it will happen – but if it does, I will keep you posted…]

*Paul Anders pointed out to me on the Twatter that Tosis is now CLOSED too! Sorry about that, but just more to my point, I guess…

So... taxidermy. Every Thanksgiving growing up, my family would gather in my Uncle Pat's game room/man cave, dish up our heaping plates of turkey and mashed potatoes, and eat around the pool table or -- for the kids, of course -- seated at the fully-stocked bar, directly under the noses of some pretty amazing taxidermied heads. There was a big ol' mountain goat, and I think a moose. It's the mountain goat I really remember, because of his huge curly horns and glassy sideways stare basically asking if I'm going to eat that, as I pushed some dry turkey around my plate. Before the Legendary Safari Club, I thought I knew what it meant to eat your meat with taxidermied animals breathing down your neck. I was amateurishly, embarrassingly kidding myself. It's impossible to properly describe the entire scene here, but I would never describe this place as serene. Most of the at least 100 animals were shot, literally on safaris, by the original owner. The dioramas are graphic. The calmest animals, say like a monkey, will be free-standing, so if you're, say, stumbling around after a few too many blended drinks, dancing to the super loud rock band on the laser-lighted dance floor, as it appears many of the regular locals (stars of an entirely different nature show) are wont to do, you might turn around and accidentally grope one or knock one over. A monkey, that is. There's a large mounted head above or near every table, so even when I looked down, there was a reflection of a zebra in the (imitation maple) syrup that I poured over my chicken (strip) and (Eggo) waffle. My vegan friend really loved that part. So tips: The best part about this place is, of course, the taxidermy. Followed up by probably the mac and cheese bites. Although our service was golden-hearted (and, in response to a previous review, seemingly neutral-trending-kind toward the gays in our party), it was a little frazzled and seemed maybe not really designed for dinner, and our Sysco food took forever and was liberally deep-, and possibly double-deep fried. Really, maybe just get drinks. A lot of them are sweet and blended and safari-themed. Maybe get one before you go, too. My imagination is very active. This place sends it into overwhelmption and requires some alcohol to dull it down. Cast lots for the designated driver, because it'd be hard to be sober here, and also it takes about an hour to get out there, so plan for that. But... you should go.

A few months back Mr. Kupcakes and I joined some of our friends at the Legendary Safari Club in Estacada Oregon one sunny afternoon. The drive out was easy and relaxing. As soon as we came into Estacada we knew right where the Safari Club was by their huge sign beckoning all to some explore all they had to offer. And explore we did. Now, I've never been one for stuffed animals. Real or fake. I'm not too fond of furs, either. Our friend, Julie can detest to that from when one of her furs touched me and I screamed. Both of them are just kind of well, creepy, to me. However, I love kitch and the history different places have to offer so I wasn't going to let anything stop us from checking-this place out. Especially since we'd been saying for years we were going to get out there one of these days. The Safari Club was designed and constructed by Jorgans Construction Company in 1970. It is the only establishment of its kind in the world today. The collection of trophies housed at the Safari Club, came from 23 different hunting expeditions in six different countries throughout the world over a six year period. Glen Park, one of the most active hunters of his time, wanted to share his trophies with others and as a result, opened the Safari Club. The trophies are displayed in grandiose glass enclosures replete with faux foliage and lavish murals, with some even being engaged in everlasting battles to the death. Admittedly, the displays are a bit out there and have aged in a most interesting manner. You will just have to see it to see what I mean.  However, this place still somehow becomes that place that you've been looking for way too long. A place that can become a bizarre  playground, of sorts. I mean come on, it's a classic dive bar with strong drinks, low light, live bands on the weekends and is also a natural history museum. Our friends can't phantom a better place to get drunk, especially off Monkey's Milk, and play make-believe.  Plus, there's an animal for every one's liking to take a picture with. I highly recommend checking this Oregon oddity out. Who knows, you might just see us there...

In the Northwest we like one of a kind mashups. The film Sometimes a Great Notion is a logger love triangle. Bagby is a hippie hot spring. We have gastro pubs, record store bars and thrift store bars, bicycle shop bars and bmx track restaurants. But in all of Oregon's oddities, the Legendary Safari Club is at the top in mashups, it's a dive bar-natural history museum-all American restaurant. It would fit perfectly into Grimm or David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Back when logging was king, and primordial trees from virgin forests fell in the Clackamas River Basin, Glen E Park prospered. Born in 1913, he developed a passion for big game hunting. Eventually he sold his mill, and in 1970 constructed the Safari Club to display his trophies. Outside it's stone with a faux thatched roof, perfect! Inside, trophy heads and full animals are arranged around the club, which takes up a half city block. Some are posed in dramatic dioramas behind glass, museum-style. Others are free standing, tucked in corners here and there. There were originally over a hundred animals at the Safari Club! Mr Park traveled the world to countries whose names have changed since his visit: British Honduras, Rhodesia, Bechuanaland. Shooting big game has passed from style over the years too. Now people more commonly take trophies as photographs with ridiculously expensive fast wide prime lenses. That is why the place is so fascinating. But Mr Park did donate money in his lifetime to wildlife conservation. Now the building is a little worn and divey. Inside, the trophies are a bit shaggy. The bathrooms are a little beat and the decor somewhat mismatched, with genuine '70's items on up to now. There is a private Jungle Room filled with tribal artifacts, viewable through the window, a vast main area, including a stage for bands, and a bar area. After the original owners, the Safari Club was briefly an American Chinese restaurant. The place has new owners since September 2011 and a classic American menu. The food portions are large and inexpensive. They have a vast menu and a huge kitchen. The menu has breakfast items, appetizers, sandwiches, pizza, and plated dinners. The salad that comes with the dinners is large, but not too distinguished. The chicken and waffles was substantial, but nothing special about the waffles. This is not a Portland-style gourmand spot. All the menu items have humorous safari or animal-themed names and there is a sweet-style mixed drink list with entertaining names too. They had 5 micros and 2 macros on tap, and an about half and half mix of bottled micro and macro beers. The bar is not set up with fancy obscure top shelf bottles, but that is fitting and goes with the vibe. We had the dining room to ourselves on a Sunday dinner time, though the bar area was pretty crowded with regulars. Our server was great and the kitchen apologetic for being short staffed. One gentleman who wasn't even working there that day volunteered to help out the wait person. That is Estacada community spirit in action! On Saturday nights they have bands and DJ's that take requests. There might be a cover then. They also have their own small bus, you could check on transporting your party. They have a very unusual selection of extremely blingy purses and jewelry in a display case for sale. It's a great place to stop inbound or outbound on your recreational trips in the Clackamas Basin. It is an easy detour from Sandy on the way to or from Hood or any East Hwy 26 destinations. You could camp out in McIver Park. Or from Portland, it's about 45 minutes each way. I'm hoping this place booms again, upgrades the food, and starts a brewery. The attraction of the Safari Club is the epic authenticity of a classic bar with a personal history and retro elements you literally will not see anywhere else in the world! The only thing missing from the Legendary Safari is you and a big group of your friends!

Safari Club owner to open retail store in Oak Grove

Safari Club owner Cindy Smith and manager Betsy Clester don’t want the legend to die.

Mounting maintenance and repair costs, as well as a lack of customers, forced the two to close the Estacada restaurant in March, about a year and a half after it reopened as the Legendary Safari Club.

It’s was the latest in a long line of ups and downs for the restaurant, which in its heyday in the 1970s and ’80s, attracted crowds from across the Portland area to dine and dance in the company of lions, bears, cougars and other stuffed beasts – trophies of founder Glen Park’s big-game hunts.

Beginning in the late ’80s, a changing economy and a succession of owners transformed the club: After Estacada permitted social gambling in 1988, police raided the club’s cardroom and briefly shut down the restaurant. In 2003, a new owner changed its name to Hong’s Chinese Restaurant. All the while, the building and animals fell into disrepair.

Smith purchased the club in September 2011 and reopened as the Legendary Safari Club, hoping to revive the "magical place" she once knew. But in March 2013, it closed once more .

Still holding tight to the club’s name, Smith and Clester hatched the idea for a Safari Club retail store. They soon cleared a space in the entrance of Pioneer Auction Gallery, the auction house they own together on Oak Grove Boulevard near Milwaukie.

When it opens on May 15, the store will offer purses, jewelry, antiques, animal skulls, taxidermy and other oddities. The bears, monkeys, lions and other animals that line the space aren’t Glen Park’s famous trophies, however; they’re animals Smith purchased years ago to display in the club.

Most of the taxidermy pieces not for sale. They’ll be needed to fill a new Safari Club restaurant in Southeast Portland, Milwaukie or the Oak Grove area when the time is right, Clester said.

“We’re still looking around,” Clester said. “We just haven’t found the perfect spot yet.”

Before purchasing the Safari Club, Smith and Clester owned auction companies in Oak Grove and Oregon City, an eBay store and a coffee shop.

“Cindy is constantly dragging me from one thing to the next,” Clester said, laughing.

The business partners are still in the process of moving furniture and decor out of the famous green-thatched building in Estacada before the lease ends in October. The last they heard, the landlord planned to auction off the animals.

“We just don’t want the Safari Club to die, because, you know, it’s legendary,” Clester said.

Legendary Safari Club

“Who wants to drive 50 miles into BFE with me to look at some dead animals?!?!” Thank goodness I have friends who reply: “Sure! When shall I pick you up?”

So a couple weeks ago, off we went to Estacada, Oregon. Of course the real question is, why do I want to go to Estacada on a Friday night?  To visit the Legendary Safari Club!

It’s LEGEN-wait for it-DARY (as NPH would say). I know… I know.. I’m a huge nerd.

After about an hour, winding through the backroads of Clackamas County, we rolled up in front of the bar at 11pm. Outside there were huge window displays, much like you’d see in a department store, but these were full of animals ripping each other to pieces.

We had not even taken taken a sip of beer before two separate people proclaimed “you girls aren’t from around here, are you?” All of them, amazed we would drive out just to see this bar. But for me and Emmi, it was totally worth it.

I mean look at this place. It’s like a dusty version of the Museum of Natural History. Lions, tigers & bears, oh my!

The place is actually really big, most of the walls are lined with huge diorama display cases. Can you call life size animals a diorama?  I’m going to.

We kept switching tables so we could get closer looks at each animal display, while everyone else celebrated a 40th birthday and danced. One of the locals told us that the only reason people from Estacada go to the Safari Club is for birthdays because its so big.  If this is the crappy bar in Estacada, maybe we should go back to see the other ones, they much be amazing!

While all the dead animals really SHOULD have bothered me, the only thing that really did, was this giant elephant head. I’m not even sure it’s real… It seemed out of place and poorly lit for such a huge trophy, but based on the rest of the bar I’m guessing it is.  It just seems especially sad, they didn’t even have the decency to stage it in a violent fight with another beast.

After a couple Bud Lights we decided it was time to hit the road.  It was late and we had a long drive back. I would definitely go back. Maybe not just for fun on a Friday night, but if I’m headed out  camping or maybe looking for a Christmas Tree I’ll  totally make a stop.

Vintage roadside visits: the safari club.

safari club estacada

We hope that you enjoy your visit in this unique club and further hope that you, your family and friends return time and time again. This is the only one of its type in the world today. It is owned by Park Enterprises and is managed by Mike Park.

This collection of outstanding trophies in this club was taken on 23 different hunting expeditions to six different countries through the world over a period of six years. The majority of trophies taken by world-renowned big game hunter Glen Park have now been entered in the World Record Books. Glen Park is the most active and outstanding hunter in the United States today.

It was Glen Park's idea to share these outstanding, beautiful trophies with the local citizenry by building a unique safari club."

Local SCI Chapter activities are featured, as well as education, conservation, and wildlife management efforts. Includes the highly regarded Hunting Insider, with critical information for the destination hunter.

Safari Club International (SCI) is the leading defender of the freedom to hunt and supporter of wildlife conservation worldwide. SCI is unique in the scope of our ability to defend and advance our freedom to hunt, mobilizing our 152 chapters and affiliate network representing 7.2 million hunters around the world. SCI is also the only hunting rights organization with a Washington, D.C. - based international advocacy team and an all-species focus. In the U.S., SCI's full time staff of professional advocates provides the hunters' voice at the federal and state levels, including issues such as access to hunting on public lands and state management authority of wildlife. Through SCI's Hunter Advocacy Action Center (HAAC), SCI is able to educate and activate hunter advocates on issues in their communities, states, and across the nation. SCI's chapter networks in Canada and Europe are involved in advocacy on local and global hunting issues, protecting sportsmen's rights. And, for more than two decades, SCI has been the major defender of hunters in courtrooms throughout the country.

HAAC

The Hunter Advocacy Action Center (HAAC) is a revolutionary software program that enables SCI members and outdoorsmen to impact legislative issues like never before. Through the HAAC, SCI's Government Affairs staff connect SCI members directly to elected officials at the state and federal level, enabling engagement in public comment submissions and petitions related to issues that directly affect them, such as trophy import bans, expanding hunting access, and second amendment issues. Through the HAAC, SCI members have made thousands of direct connections with state and federal legislators, ensuring their voice is heard in the political process.

Education makes a difference in wildlife conservation. Sportsmen and women, avid in their passion of the outdoors, pass on their knowledge to peers and young people to continue our outdoor heritage.

What better way to learn about the outdoors and nature than by attending educational programs and workshops that not only focus on conservation education but demonstrate how to use the outdoors and nature as a classroom!

The Safari Club is getting a new owner who is renovating it and bringing it back to its rightful glory! New menu and new animals are coming!

There's a grand re-opening at the end of September.

The Safari Club is still alive and well! Now owned by an Asian family, all the game trophies are still in-house, with only some available for viewing depending on whether or not the whole bar is open (usually the weekends are when the dance floor, band area, and bar are all access).

My uncle Fritz Jordan, a local contractor, was good friends with the original owner of the Safari Club. Fritz and his good friend would go on hunting expeditions to various locations bringing back animal trophies. Due to their extensive hunts, the Safari Club became a "showplace-warehouse" to display the growing collection of animals. My uncle Fritz died approximately 20 years ago. The Safari Club still stands to this day with an amazing collection of exotic animals for all to enjoy.

Safari Club.

I'd heard the same rumors about the taxidermied trophy animals being shipped off to Washington (Tacoma, not Seattle was the story I heard from a bartender in 2005) but we were just there and the front windows and main bar area and stage area were still the same.

The back room -- that's also full of taxidermied animals -- was almost always closed to the public (I've only seen it once) and it was closed this time as well. Perhaps those were the animals being transferred.

The animals are all (or mostly) still there. It is just that the new owner is selling this incredibly amazing collection of wild animals off very slowly. For a bar, it is one of the strangest out there, and its history is one of the strangest. Once upon a time, the 1990's surf band Satan's Pilgrims filmed a rock video there.

Located next to the historic mission on the continental side of the lagoon, this hotel was built in 1976 – initially as a sport hunting lodge. There are 20 rooms set in 15 acres of very well kept gardens. The bungalows are cozy and comfortable, are air-conditioned and include a terrace overlooking panoramic views of the lagoon. The site is spectacular, very tranquil, and an ideal weekend retreat or longer holiday destination. The hotel has a swimming pool, a restaurant, a landing port, and a power boat, so should soon be able to offer relaxation and activities on the lagoon, such as tours and sport fishing. The site has been under major renovation and a new management team is taking over. Phone: 07 42 63 55.

There was an unsuccessful adventure to Bagby hot springs. In retrospect, it seemed like the forces were out against us that day. Bad traffic on the way out, late start, queesy stomaches from breakfast and snowy roads. Her car got stuck in the snow on the last leg of the road up there, which was about 5 miles out and turned out to be too formidable to pass. We retreated to this place called the Safari Club, which Katie had been to before. Combine a dive bar with rather trashy patrons and natural history museum and you've got Safari Club. Immediately upon entering, you're greeted by a polar bear standing on his hind legs in a display case. Add to this two tigers fighting, cougars, panthers, african lions, gazelles and deer all propped up in glass showcases all throughout the bar. Too much to describe in a single post. Pictured here is the deer being pounced by a mountain lion.
