The Drums Reflect on ‘Loveless Childhood’ for Single ‘I Want It All’

  • By Tomás Mier

The Drums are back after four years without new music. On Monday, the indie pop band released the single “I Want It All” and announced a summer U.S. tour.

“The song emerged from the longing and the pain that stemmed from a loveless childhood,” says frontman Jonny Pierce about the new single. “It is only in the past few years that I have really begun to understand what happened to me as a boy, which has helped me start to build my own bridge towards real love.”

He adds, “The song is a declaration: That I will take what I was never given. I want the full experience of being human, which includes love and connection. I want it all.”

In a signature Drums fashion, Pierce’s voice shines over a driving drumbeat and the sound of oceanside guitars as he repeats the song’s title in the chorus.

Along with the self-reflective new single, the alt-pop group is set to head on a U.S. tour, starting at San Diego’s House of Blues, then making their way across the country to stop in cities including Nashville, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco.

The Drums start EU tour

The drums kicked off their european tour at london's kentish town forum venue last night (24.11.10)..

by : Elle Canada - Nov 25th, 2010

The Drums kicked off their European tour in London last night (24.11.10). The ‘Me And The Moon’ group played to a sold-out crowd in the city, which they return to for their biggest headlining shows to date. The band’s flamboyant lead singer, Jonathan Pierce, sashayed onstage in a varsity jacket before the group – with new touring guitarist Tom Haswell looking a comfortable addition to the band – launched into the opener of their self titled debut album, ‘Best Friend’. Although they remained fairly quiet between songs, Jonathan did address the crowd to give a number of thank you’s. The Drums’ set included almost all the tracks from their debut, including fan favourite ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ – which had been dropped from the band’s set when they played at the Reading and Leeds festivals earlier this year – which received the biggest cheer of the night from the audience. After the show a source close to the band told BANG Showbiz: “They looked so confident onstage and you can see they’re riding high after a year which has really seen them explode, everyone in the house knew every word to ‘Let’s Go Surfing’, it was incredible.” The group – which also includes guitarist Jacob Graham and drummer Connor Hanwick – ended with a finale of ‘Skippin’ Town’ and ‘Down By The Water’, after which Connor pushed his drumkit over as the band left the stage. Support for the show was provided by ‘IO EO’, Two Wounded Birds and Violens. The drums are on tour throughout Europe until December 17.

The stage was impressive as were the band. Sounding like they had just released their first album, Europe rocked through the entire concert. No support act and a show so awesome it needed an intermission, we rocked, sang and danced with Joe and the boys through all the old hits and the best of the new. The energy of the guys was astounding, each having their own moment to shine. The drum solo was a stand out. It was a well crafted set list, with the big anthems and softer ballads, blended to remind us that Europe has been part of the soundtrack of our lives. A concert that left us grinning and singing on the night and for days afterwards.

THE CULT Announces '8424' 40th-Anniversary European Tour

THE CULT has announced the "8424" European tour celebrating the band's 40th anniversary. The trek will see the Ian Astbury -fronted outfit perform songs spanning its 11-album discography.

THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy said: "Following up from the great energy of DEATH CULT '8323' shows, I'm looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band's music, and the communion with our fans, to CULT '8424' . Let the ceremony commence!"

THE CULT holds a significant place in musical history due to its pioneering use of post-punk, hard rock, and experimentalism, pushing boundaries and influencing countless bands across multiple genres. With their musical prowess, uncompromising attitude and captivating stage presence, they forged a distinct identity while charting new territory for bands to explore. From Duffy 's formative, and influential, years in the Manchester underground, to Astbury 's groundbreaking "Gathering Of The Tribes" , the duo has left an indelible mark on modern music, shaping its trajectory in profound ways.

The "8424" tour dates:

July 11 - Seville, ES Icónica July 12 - Madrid, ES Noches del Botánico July 14 - Valencia, ES Jardines de Viveros July 16 - Porto, PT Coliseu Porto Ageas July 17 - Lisbon, PT Coliseu dos Recreios July 20 - Co Laois, IE Forestfest Festival July 23 - Prague, CZ Archa Theatre July 24 - Vienna, AT Gasometer July 25 - Opatija, HU Opatija Summer Stage July 27 - Milan, IT Carroponte July 28 - Pratteln, CH Z7 Summer Nights July 30 - Warsaw, PL Letnia Scena Progresji July 31 - Berlin, DE Huxleys Neue Welt August 2 - Rejmyre, SE Skogsröjet August 4 - Cologne, DE Carlswerk Victoria August 5 - Tilburg, NL 013 Poppodium August 6 - Amsterdam, NL Paradiso August 8 - Hamburg, DE Große Freiheit 36 August 9 - Skanderborg, DK Smukfest October 21 - Leicester, UK De Montfort Hall October 22 - Swansea, UK Swansea Arena October 24 - Edinburgh, UK Usher Hall October 25 - Manchester, UK O2 Apollo October 27 - Bristol, UK Bristol Beacon October 29 - York, UK Barbican October 30 - Newcastle, UK O2 City Hall November 1 - Portsmouth, UK Guildhall November 2 - Wolverhampton, UK Wolverhampton Civic Hall November 4 - London, UK Royal Albert Hall

In a 2023 interview with Germany's Rock Antenne , Astbury was full of praise for THE CULT 's latest album, "Under The Midnight Sun" , calling it "essential." He clarified: "If you're a fan of rock music, our new record's essential… I don't think there's any recent releases of rock music that come close to 'Under The Midnight Sun' . And to say that, it may sound like an arrogant statement, but I'm tired of this bullshit. Stop it. Stop phoning it in. Stop exploiting your fans. Stop patronizing your fans. And stop calling them fans. They're your benefactors. Our audience are our benefactors."

Astbury continued: "I have such incredible gratitude and respect to people who would actually pay their hard-earned money to walk through a door, buy a record, come to a show, buy a t-shirt. Are you kidding? I was one; I am one. I appreciate that. I appreciate them. And that's why we made this record, because we wanted it to be the best of the best of the best. It's a gift. Yeah, you've gotta pay for it. But I'm sorry, that's… it's society."

"Under The Midnight Sun" arrived in October 2022 via Black Hill Records . The LP was produced by Tom Dalgety ( PIXIES , GHOST , ROYAL BLOOD ). Dalgety is the first British producer THE CULT has worked with since its second album, "Love" (1985).

Astbury previously spoke highly of "Under The Midnight Sun" in July 2022 in an interview with Dayton Daily News . At the time, he said: "It is a different animal. It destroys 'Hidden City' and anything else we've done in quite a while. We dug deep and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this record.

"It's a brave new world out there and we want to be a part of it, but you don't get to be a part of it unless you're doing your best work," he added. "There are no free passes for anyone. You're only as good as what's happening today."

In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Daily News , Astbury stated about "Under The Midnight Sun" : "This new album is a really honest, authentic depiction of where we are today. It's a very focused record and it's layered, it's dense, it's celebratory and it gets dark. There's a lot in this record. It's an amalgamation of THE CULT 's major influences, the DNA of the band all culminating in a very special moment."

Born out of the ashes of the U.K. post-punk scene, THE CULT evolved to become one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the late 20th century, selling millions of albums, headlining arenas and stadiums around the world, infusing innovative possibilities into the worlds of music and art, and quickly ascending through the ranks of the indie music world to achieve global status. THE CULT , whose music transformed from punk rock to post-punk, psychedelia, heavy dance music and transcendental hard rock, became one of the handful of important bands in the U.S. post-modern and hard rock communities, and was embraced by a generation that was waking up to the influence of 1960s and 1970s rock icons like LED ZEPPELIN , THE NEW YORK DOLLS and David Bowie .

The constant core of THE CULT is the "head and heart" of the band, Astbury and Duffy . Attitude incarnate, the chemistry between these two vastly different artists — equal parts genuine affection and palpable tension — remains the source of their long-standing partnership. Duffy grounds Astbury 's esoteric side with a hard rock perspective, and there is no doubt that at all times, these two have each other's back. THE CULT 's current lineup also includes former WHITE ZOMBIE , EXODUS and TESTAMENT drummer John Tempesta .

Drum giant Antonio Sánchez on ‘Birdman’ tour after album with Trent Reznor, Dave Matthews and Pat Metheny

Antonio Sanchez

The Mexico City native and four-time Grammy Award recipient is now embarked on his 10th anniversary tour for Oscar-winning ‘Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),’ for which he composed and performed the unique solo drum set score

How big an impact can a film that wins four Oscars have on someone who doesn’t appear on screen in a single frame of that film? In the case of Antonio Sánchez, life-changing.

The Mexico City native and 20-year veteran of the Pat Metheny Group was already one of the most celebrated drummers in the world when director Alejandro G. Iñárritu approached him in 2013. Iñárritu, also from Mexico City, asked Sánchez to compose and perform the groundbreaking solo drum-set score for the 2014 film “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” whose cast includes Michael Keaton and Emma Stone.

It went on to win Oscars in 2015 for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. In 2016, “Birdman” earned Sánchez a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

The film’s Oscar and Grammy wins led to more film and TV scoring gigs for the veteran drummer, composer and leader of the genre-blurring band Bad Hombre. It also opened the door for the collaborations on Sánchez’s 10th solo album, 2022’s “Shift (Bad Hombre, Vol. 2),” which teams him with such varied musicians as Metheny, Dave Matthews, Meshell Ndegeocello, Lila Downs, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, Ana Tijoux, Kimbra, and more.

“That all these great artists, who I admire so much, would even give me the time of day is just incredible — and I think it’s largely because of ‘Birdman,’ because that’s the reference point for most people,” Sánchez said.

He will perform his striking drum score live when the film screens Thursday at UC San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater as part of his national “Birdman Live 10th Anniversary Tour.”

“I got to meet Trent Reznor at the Golden Globe Awards, the same year I was nominated for one, and he loved ‘Birdman’,” Sánchez continued. “If people don’t know my solo work — or my work with Pat (Metheny), Chick Corea, Michael Brecker or Gary Burton — they usually know ‘Birdman.’ That has opened different kinds of doors because it’s a very powerful thing when you are the composer of an Oscar-winning film.”

‘I felt like a tourist’

Mexican-born jazz drum great Antonio Sánchez

As “Birdman” racked up one prize after another around the world, including a Best Score award for Sánchez at Italy’s Venice Film Festival, he entered an entirely new world.

“I felt like a tourist in that (film) industry, because the nature of jazz is so different and very low-key,” Sánchez said, speaking from the Barcelona home he shares with his wife, Macedonian-born singer Thana Alexa.

“When you are nominated for a Grammy as a jazz musician, you pay for your own ticket to fly to the Grammys, you book and pay for your own hotel room, and you even have to pay for a ticket for your wife for the after-party,” he elaborated.

“All of a sudden, with all these film awards shows, they were flying me and my wife, first class, putting us in five-star hotels and providing a car and driver,” he said. “It was very exciting while it lasted and led to my doing the music for the ‘Get Shorty’ TV series and more movies and even some commercials. Film awards are a lot of fun. But they have absolutely nothing to do with our day-to-day lives as jazz musicians, which seems like a much smaller world.”

Sánchez’s post-”Birdman” scoring credits include the British film “The Hippopotamus,” written by Stephen Fry, and the Spanish documentary “Politica, Manual De Instrucciones.” He is now working on the score for an upcoming British TV series, “Stags,” which will air on Paramount+ in the U.S.

On April 26, Sánchez will make his Carnegie Hall headlining debut with a one-time-only quintet that features saxophonists Joe Lovano and Chris Potter, pianist Joey Calderazzo and bassist Larry Grenadier. In August, he will be in Mexico City to do the third edition of his Residencia Antonio Sánchez, which he created as a musical and intellectual exchange for advanced-level students and jazz professionals from Mexico and Latin America.

Then, after completing the music for the first six episodes of “Stags,” Sánchez will perform some fall concerts in a new trio he co-leads with American banjo innovator Bela Fleck and Colombian harpist Edmar Castaneda. That will be followed by an album with Ellipsis, a trio that teams Sánchez with Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez and Snarky Puppy band founder Michael League. Also coming this year is a new album featuring Sánchez by former Miles Davis guitarist Mike Stern, plus concert dates with the European-based quartet the drummer leads.

“I always have a few irons in the fire,” said Sánchez. “But it’s very difficult now, since the pandemic, for creative musicians. Because things are dominated by very bad commercial music and there is less and less opportunity for those of us who are not (in the mainstream).”

In addition to his Grammy for “Birdman,” Sánchez has won three other Grammys for his work with Metheny. The guitar legend and composer happily sang Sánchez’s praises last fall in a Union-Tribune interview.

‘The ultimate drummer’

Pat Metheny, Linda May Han Oh and Antonio Sanchez, Aug 3, 2018 Newport Jazz Festival

“One of the real highlights of my life was to spend 20 years — and, hopefully, more years to come — with Antonio, who is the ultimate drummer,” Metheny said. “He is the drummer I thought would never be born. He is everything I ever desired in a drummer, and more.”

Metheny, it transpires, played a key role — behind the scenes — in bringing together Sánchez and multiple-Oscar-winner Iñárritu on “Birdman.”

“One of my major heroes in these past years is Iñárritu,” Metheny said. “Starting with his (2000) film, ‘Amores Perros,’ he revolutionized the idea of linear time in a way that inspires me, as well as his particular narrative and sonic use and visions of what a film might be. We became friends years ago. I recommended that he use Antonio for ‘Birdman,’ with a solo drum score. ... It worked great for both of them!”

The soundtrack for “Birdman” also includes periodic segments from 19th-century symphonies by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Mahler. But what makes the film snap, crackle and pop — literally and figuratively — is Sánchez’s remarkably creative drumming.

His playing musically mirrors and enhances “Birdman’s” characters and their actions with stunning imagination, pinpoint whisper-to-thunder dynamic control and expansive rhythmic and tonal textures. His lightness of touch is unusual for a drummer who plays with such intensity. He has an astounding command of his instrument and is a master of metric modulation.

“Iñárritu told me: ‘I want you to improvise; I really want jazz.’ He didn’t want anything too premeditated,” Sánchez recalled.

“He would explain scenes to me in great detail and have me improvise. So, that’s what I basically did, just reacting to what he told me and trying to follow the vibe of the story he was telling. That’s what I do when I play with a band or for myself. It’s all about storytelling.”

Had all gone according to plan, Iñárritu would have filmed Sánchez for the scenes in “Birdman” in which a drummer performs solo in the corridors of the New York theater in which much of the film is set.

But Sánchez had a concert tour that conflicted with the shooting dates. He handpicked highly regarded jazz drummer Nate Smith to drum in those scenes.

“It was really interesting,” said Sánchez, whose grandfather, Ignacio López Tarso, was one of Mexico’s most famous actors. “Nate played some stuff when they were shooting and when I was finishing the scoring, after the movie was already shot, I had to adapt some of the things in the score for it to look like he played it.

“Because what you hear in the movie is not him. You see him but hear me. So, I had to learn some of his moves to play accurately in the score at the same time when he was doing it in the film, so that it would look like he was the one doing the drumming that you see and hear. That was a really weird exercise!”

Sánchez’s onstage performances of “Birdman” are doubly intriguing since his drumming has been removed from the soundtrack.

“What you will hear,” he said, “is my live drumming, the dialogue and some of the incidental (orchestral) music.”

Sánchez’s drums will be set up to the immediate right of the screen on which the film is shown. He will view the film on a monitor screen, the better to ensure his drumming is perfectly timed to the movie. But he won’t perform exactly the same improvised drum parts as he did in the original film.

“I’m a little tucked away because I don’t want to be the center of attention,” he noted. “But I’m facing toward the center of the stage and you can definitely see me. In the beginning of doing these concerts, I tried to stay as close as possible to the original score because it was fresh in people’s minds. Now, 10 years later, I don’t think anybody remembers what the hell I did!

“It’s a lot more fun now that I don’t have to stick to anything in particular. Of course, I want to achieve the frantic intensity of drumming as when we did the film. But nobody cares if I play note for note what I did in the original score, so now I get to improvise a lot more.

“I’ve probably seen the film more than Iñárritu because I’ve been performing it live for 10 years. I have gotten to know it so intimately that there are a lot of spots I can contribute to that originally didn’t have drums. I’m sort of ad-libbing in a lot more scenes. Because I know the story and dialogue so well, I can create more on the drums. For me, it’s a lot more fun to do live than 10 years ago.”

Born in 1971, Sánchez began drumming when he was 5 and grew up immersed in both rock and classical music. He enrolled in Mexico’s National Conservatory of Music as a classical pianist but soon gravitated to jazz. His first epiphany came when a friend at the conservatory gave him a tape of a mid-1980s album by the Chick Corea Elektric Band, featuring Dave Weckl on drums.

“I was blown away,” recalled Sánchez, whose 2007 album, “Migration,” features Corea. “I’d listened to a little jazz, but I’d never heard music like this before. It was very hard hitting, complex, powerful and intricate.

“I had been into (Rush drummer) Neil Peart, who could play complex rhythms, but he didn’t improvise. This album by Chick and his band was on a completely different level. And it really inspired me to keep studying and try to learn more about jazz, and to figure out what these people were doing!”

In 1993, Sánchez enrolled at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he graduated magna cum laude in jazz studies. He soon was drumming for such notable jazz artists as Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez and Cuban-born saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera. He became a member of Metheny’s group in 2001. It was a dream gig that would tie together Sánchez’s journey from his teen years in Mexico City to his work on “Birdman” and beyond.

“I did not know Iñárritu in Mexico City. But I knew of him because he was a DJ on a very popular radio station, 96.9, when I was growing up,” Sánchez explained. “One night, he played this song that really intrigued me. It had a very lush harmony and wordless vocals, which was something I was not used to in rock ‘n’ roll. It was ‘Last Train Home’ by the Pat Metheny Group.

“I said: ‘Oh, wow. I have to check this band out!’ Fast forward and, years later, I ended up playing in the Pat Metheny Group and we played that song. In 2005, Iñárritu came to see our concert in Los Angeles, because he’s a big fan of Pat’s music. There was an after-party and Iñárritu started talking to me. I didn’t know it was him.

“I said: ‘What do you do?’ He said: ‘I direct films and commercials.’ I asked if he’d done anything I’d seen. When he answered, I freaked out and apologized profusely. We became friends and stayed in touch. In 2013, he called me, out of nowhere, and asked me do the score for ‘Birdman.’ It was full circle.”

Germany’s Leader Walks a Fine Line in China

Chancellor Olaf Scholz tried to promote German business interests while delivering warnings from Europe about trade and geopolitical tensions.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany and Xi Jinping, China’s leader, both in dark suits, stand on a red carpet in front of large Chinese and German flags.

By Alexandra Stevenson and Melissa Eddy

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany tried to strike a delicate balance on a trip to China this week, promoting business ties with his country’s biggest trading partner while raising concerns over its surge of exports to Europe and its support for Russia.

Mr. Scholz met with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Tuesday, the culmination of a three-day visit with a delegation of German officials and business leaders. He also met with Premier Li Qiang as the two countries navigate relations strained by Russia’s war in Ukraine and China’s rivalry with the United States, Germany’s most important ally.

Throughout his trip, Mr. Scholz promoted the interests of German companies that are finding it increasingly hard to compete in China. And he conveyed growing concern in the European Union that the region’s market is becoming a dumping ground for Chinese goods produced at a loss .

But Mr. Scholz chose a conciliatory tone over a combative one in his opening remarks before sitting down with Mr. Xi on Tuesday morning, in a meeting that stretched over three hours and turned into a walk and lunch.

It was the German leader’s first visit to China since his government adopted a strategy last year that defined the Asian power as a “partner, competitor and systemic rival ,” calling on Germany to reduce its dependency on Chinese goods.

Germany’s economy shrank last year, and its weaknesses have exposed a reliance on China for growth. Energy prices have risen because of the war in Ukraine, which has been facilitated by Beijing’s support for the Kremlin. German companies have pushed for more access to China and complained that they face unfair competition .

The chancellor visited German companies with extensive investments in China and met with trade representatives and officials in the sprawling industrial metropolis of Chongqing in China’s southwest and in Shanghai and Beijing.

At a talk with a group of students in Shanghai on Monday, Mr. Scholz fielded a question from a student who planned to study in Germany this year, who said he was “really worried” because the country had partially legalized cannabis. “When you study in Berlin, you can run around the whole time and never meet anyone who does that,” the chancellor assured him.

But he also used the platform to push more serious messages about trade. “Competition must be fair,” Mr. Scholz told the students. “We want a level playing field,” he said.

Mr. Scholz’s trip was an example of the difficult dance that Germany is trying to do: maintaining economic ties with China while managing U.S. pressure to align itself more closely with Washington against Beijing.

In his meetings, Mr. Scholz highlighted Germany’s commitment to doing business with China, but he also warned that Beijing had to curb the flood of Chinese goods into Europe. At the same time, he expressed reservations about the European Union’s investigations into China’s use of subsidies for green technology industries, saying that any discussion about trade must be based on fairness.

“This must be done from a position of self-confident competitiveness and not from protectionist motives,” Mr. Scholz told reporters on Monday.

China’s manufacturing push in green sectors like electric cars and solar panels has touched off trade disputes with Europe and the United States, where such industries have also received government support. But with 5,000 German companies active in the Chinese market, Germany stands to lose more than many of its European partners would if Beijing were to retaliate against the European Union.

“If the E.U. goes too hard against China, we could expect countermeasures and this would be a catastrophe for us,” said Maximilian Butek, the executive director of the German Chamber of Commerce in China.

“For us it’s extremely important that the Chinese market remains open,” he said.

In his meeting with Mr. Xi, Mr. Scholz indicated that Russia’s war on Ukraine and its arms buildup were high on his agenda. “They directly affect our core interests. Indirectly, they damage the entire international order,” he said in opening remarks at the meeting, a transcript of which was provided by Mr. Scholz’s office.

Despite pressing the issue with Mr. Xi, he did not appear to win the commitment that he had sought from the Chinese leader to take part in an international conference for Ukraine planned in June. Germany had hoped that China could use its influence over Russia to help work toward a peace agreement.

Germany would also like China stop selling goods to Russia that have potential uses on the battlefield, and Mr. Scholz told reporters that he had brought up the issue in his meeting. “The point has been made,” he said. “There can be no misunderstanding about how we see things.”

China is hoping to drive a wedge between Europe and the United States by courting leaders such as Mr. Scholz. State media reports depicted his visit as demonstrating the strength of China’s relations with Europe, playing up its economic ties with Germany.

In his opening remarks to Mr. Scholz, Mr. Xi said cooperation between China and Germany, which have the second- and third-largest economies, was beneficial to the world, a remark that could be read as directed at those who have urged Berlin to distance itself from Beijing.

“The two countries should view and develop bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective and work together to inject more stability and certainty into the world,” Mr. Xi told Mr. Scholz, emphasizing the importance of seeking “common ground.”

Beijing is sure to welcome the message that German businesses are committed to China. The Asian giant is trying to court foreign investment to reinvigorate its economy, which has faltered because of a housing slowdown. Some Western businesses and investors have also been rattled by Mr. Xi’s emphasis on national security, which they regard as making it riskier to operate in the country.

From China’s perspective, Germany may be its best hope of delaying or watering down any trade restrictions from Europe, said Noah Barkin, a senior adviser in the China practice at the Rhodium Group, a research firm.

German carmakers have invested billions of dollars in China, and much of their revenue comes from there. Many worry that if the European Commission imposes higher tariffs on Chinese exports, and Beijing retaliates, German businesses will suffer most.

Chinese officials “know that German companies are heavily invested and they use that politically to influence political decision making in Berlin,” Mr. Barkin said.

Germany’s biggest companies, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and BASF, have large operations in China and strong, effective lobbies in Berlin, Mr. Barkin added. Executives from those companies, along with several others, traveled with Mr. Scholz to China.

“The supply chain in China is stuffed with German goods,” said Joerg Wuttke, a former president of the E.U. Chamber of Commerce in China. “If China has a price war with Germany, then no one will make money anymore.”

Mr. Scholz also brought along the German ministers for agriculture, the environment and transportation, officials who experts said would be particularly interested in working with China.

“You set an agenda with these three ministers, the tonality is overall a cooperative one, these are areas that we want to work on,” said Janka Oertel, director of the Asia Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Chinese officials, for their part, have brushed off the European accusations of unfair trading practices, calling them groundless and an act of “ typical protectionism .” They have hinted that they could retaliate for any actions taken by the European Union, saying that China was “strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes” its investigations.

In an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Wu Ken, China’s ambassador to Germany, said the competitive edge of Chinese electric vehicles “relies on innovation, not subsidies.”

“The challenge faced by developed countries lies more in the fact that Chinese companies are more efficient,” the ambassador said.

Taylor Swift will soon launch the European, UK and Ireland legs of her record-breaking Eras tour.

Over the past year, the 34-year-old pop star has been performing her career-spanning shows at stadiums around the world, including North America, Tokyo, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore.

A month after the release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Society, she will continue the Eras tour with four nights in Paris at the La Défense Arena.

After this, she will perform two shows in Lisbon, Portugal, then a further two nights in Madrid, Spain, and Lyon, France.

UK-based fans (and those travelling to see Swift from overseas) will then get to see her live during three nights from 7 to 9 June at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, before she heads to Liverpool and Cardiff.

Swift is booked to perform a staggering eight shows at Wembley Stadium in London, with the first three taking place between 21 and 23 June, before she returns for the final five nights of her UK and Europe tour between 15 and 20 August.

In between those, she will have also played in Dublin, Ireland, in Amsterdam, Zurich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Munich in Germany, Warsaw in Poland, and Vienna, Austria.

Ticketmaster recently announced a major update for fans with tickets to see Swift this summer.

All UK and Ireland dates will be supported by US rock band Paramore.

In a five-star review of the very first show of Swift’s Eras tour , critic Kelsey Barnes wrote how the US star guided fans through more than a decade’s worth of “her best work”.

“Her ‘Eras Tour’ was designed as a journey through that staggering back catalogue of 10 albums, from her earlier country twang on her self-titled debut to the shift to synth-pop on 1989 , then to the subdued folk and alt-rock of Folklore and Evermore ,” she wrote.

“Throughout the opening night of the tour, it frequently feels as though the audience is being caught up with Swift’s past, present and future. In the 44-song setlist that spans three hours and 15 minutes, she shows why the “era” concept is so integral to who she is. Each chapter marks a specific shift in her artistry.”

The Tortured Poets Department, released on 19 April, is the pop titan’s 11th studio album. It appears to have been inspired, in part, by the five stages of grief. Ahead of the release, Swift shared five new playlists that arrange her songs into those stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

“These songs represent making room for more good in your life,” she says in a brief audio message that accompanied the final playlist, acceptance. “Making that choice. Because a lot of time when we lose things, we gain things too.”

The shows were scheduled for this spring but moved to fall

Due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, the Jonas Brothers are shifting the European leg of The Tour to start in September. The trek begins on September 9th in Belfast with dates through October 16th in Krakow. All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates and additional tickets are on sale now. Current ticketholders will receive more information via email.

“We have shifted the European dates to later this year and that is only because we have some exciting projects that we are excited to share with you at a later point. In 2024, The Tour continues its trek around the globe, returning next to South America for the first time in ten years. The Latin American leg of The Tour will see the band perform in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, along with three performances across Mexico. Entries Now Open for 2024 Senior Open Presented by Rolex

Both exempt and non-exempt players can now enter for this year’s edition of The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex .

Carnoustie Golf Links-885506028

The Championship will take place from July 25-28 at Carnoustie, which will play host for the third time in the event’s 37-year history.

Those without an exemption can now enter one of four Qualifying Events set to be staged on the East Coast of Scotland. The venues – each of which lie within 20 miles of Carnoustie Golf Links – include Downfield Golf Club in Dundee, Panmure Golf Club in Carnoustie, the Medal Course at Monifieth Golf Links and the 1562 course at Montrose Golf Links.

Each venue boasts a strong pedigree having hosted both Open Final Qualifying and Senior Open Qualifying in previous years.

There will also be a Qualifying Event held in the United States at Firestone Country Club on Monday July 8 and administered by the PGA TOUR Champions, for which entries are now also open.

David Williams, Tournament Director of The Senior Open Presented by Rolex, said: “It’s very exciting to open qualifying for this year’s edition of The Senior Open Presented by Rolex. This marks the start of a three-month process that will culminate in the winner being crowned at Carnoustie’s legendary Championship Course in July.

“The four Qualifying venues will present a tricky challenge to the players hoping to reach this year’s Championship. Given the proximity of all four venues to the Angus Coastline, they will also offer ideal preparation to those who earn one of the available spots in the field.”

To be eligible for entry, players must be either male Professionals with a current Tour affiliation or PGA Membership, or male Amateurs with an exact handicap index of 0.4 (scratch) or lower under the World Handicap System, or the scheme adopted by the recognised authority controlling golf in their country.

If you are exempt or would like to enter one of the four Scotland-based Qualifiers, please click here .

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.
