Tristan Lebron

Tour Guide / Guía Turístico

Buenas! Bienvenidos a Tranki Tours, my name is Tristan.

I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where there is little to no Boricua nor Caribbean culture. While it’s a culturally rich region in the United States, something was still missing. I remained intrigued and curious about my family’s roots in Puerto Rico. After beginning my travels around the world, I decided it was time to seek the same fulfillment from Isla del Encanto.

Since relocating in 2020, my life has blossomed into everything I never imagined it could be. I increasingly appreciate our island, people, and culture with each passing day, and I aim to spark that feeling within you during our time together. I love being outdoors and connecting with people. And the fact that I can do both in my favorite place on earth is a blessing for me. Puerto Rico is full of enchantment, and it’s an honor to make our tours the highlight of your trip!

Zip through the Rainforest with our Zipline Tours in Puerto Rico

Great experience. We felt very safe and there were several different zips of different lengths. It was a warm day but it got even hotter when we saw all of the good looking staff.

A++++. Safety was #1 here!!!!! I never ever felt unsafe. We were clipped on every second of the 11 (2 were mini ones) zip lines that we were on. Super impressed w this place. Safest one ever. Very very veryyyy fun staff!!!! They were funny and were entertaining and made it a super fun experience.

Personable staff, pretty views. Great spot if this is your first experience zip lining or if you just want to try it out during your time in the area. We had a good time. Clear & easy instructions and the lines were not very difficult. Definitely recommended if this will be your first time.

This zipline adventure was so much fun! Our tour guides, Giovanni, Eliot, Yariel,, Christian and Anthony were very professional but they made it so fun! You can tell that they love their jobs. Safety is top notch, they continually reminded us of how we should be as we go down the line and most of all the views were amazing. All in all, this was a great activity to do and is well worth the money!

We access this sacred land via a private property (farm) which belongs to us (Atabey Tours). From here we have a 15 minute hike through the forest to reach the river. This is a super off the beaten path local area (no tourists). This adventure requires hiking on uneven terrain. Once on the river, we do some wild river trekking (waist deep) and enjoy some beautiful swimming holes and an optional Mud Bath along with spectacular views of the mountains and even the ocean. We even have a natural water slide more up river for those true explorers. All this on the way to our stunning 40 foot waterfall where we can play and cliff jump into the river at all levels from easy to more challenging.

We bathe inside the vortex of the canyon created by the thundering waterfall carving out the rock over thousands of years. On the way back, we take the Afro-Puerto Rican scenic coastal route & learn about local African culture in our island. Pickup and drop off time is usually 12:30-5:30pm (possibly longer) depending on your pace as we have no rush in these magical places. We can also start earlier. Rainforests and Rum Castles: The Best Day Trips From San Juan

By  Kathleen Squires

“El Yunque is the United States’ only tropical rainforest. It was devastated by the storms. The lower falls have been cleaned up, so you can still hike that part; it’s full of lovely greenery and flowers. I recommend going to El Yunque with  Atabey Tours . The guide, Andres Carrero, is an adventurer who has lived in Puerto Rico his entire life. He has a deep appreciation for the island and is super socially conscious. He will point out amazing things that people don’t normally notice and take you off the beaten path. Remember to wear a bathing suit so you can jump in a swimming hole.”  —Laura Daen, founder of  Mercado Agricola Natural Viejo San Juan

It’s truly one of the most unique rain forests in the United States national forest system. On some full day trips, a given trip may make an additional stop beyond what is advertised; at the same time, that trip may make one less stop than what is advertised. Join this unique Afternoon to Night Nature Walk Adventure!

Did you know that about 60% of the El Yunque Rainforest inhabitants are nocturnal, and are very seldom seen during the daytime?

Imagine entering the forest just about one hour before the sun sets via a guided nature walk tour to learn about the daytime flora and fauna, and walking along a manmade and natural trail that winds its way through the forest to a wild and scenic river better known as the Mameyes.

If weather conditions permit, we are able to take a dip in one of El Yunque’s finest natural swimming holes, Las Damas pool, or you can just relax around the river banks and listen to the water rushing through the rocks!

After about thirty minutes, it’s time to start our walk back out of the forest, just as twilight settles in over El Yunque. All diurnal animals are preparing to rest while the nocturnal animals are starting to come to life. First, we notice the cooling of the air; the dew points rise, sounds become much more intense, new smells fill the air as night prepares to fall! Bats take flight, sounds of the Puerto Rican screech owl are heard in the distance, insects are seen and heard, 17 species of tree frogs start calling out to their mates, aquatic life becomes more present as El Yunque awakens!

Come and enjoy the El Yunque Rainforest while it’s asleep, then leave as it awakens! This Puerto Rico rainforest tour is an adventure not to be missed!

As for the difficulty level, the hiking trail in the El Yunque Rainforest is rated moderately challenging, with a difficulty level of 4 out of 5. This 85-foot (26 meters) tall waterfall cascades down a massive rock formation, making it a perfect backdrop for photos commemorating your time at El Yunque. El Yunque National Forest is a must-do for anyone visiting Puerto Rico.

This is a great experience for people that love the outdoors and nature.

While you are in the area, I recommend making a day of it and checking out the nearby beach town of Luquillo .

El Yunque is relatively close to a couple of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays . If you have time, you should definitely experience the bioluminescence.

This remote Puerto Rico island is an idyllic Caribbean getaway – pristine beaches, lush rainforest and artisan rum

T wo hours after sundown we pushed our glass-bottomed kayaks out onto Mosquito Bay, a small inlet on the south coast of Puerto Rico ’s remote island of Vieques, the surrounding mangrove trees silhouetted against the dark blue sky.

It was deathly silent as we paddled forward, following the voice of our guide and doing our best to keep our strokes in time as we headed for the centre of the bay. A sudden shriek pierced the silence from a neighbouring kayak. “It’s beneath you! Look down!”

The black water began to change, sparkling a glittering blue. A thick stream of diamonds whooshed under the boat as the current from the Caribbean Sea carried us forward.

We’d found the “magic” of Mosquito Bay’s bioluminescence. I dipped my hand in the warm water and the diamonds trickled down my arm like something from a trippy dreamscape. This type of plankton that glows as a defence mechanism when disturbed makes Vieques home to one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world – and I’m fortunate that I’m being shown it by the people who know it best: the island’s locals.

It’s one of several locally led experiences that show tourists a new way to explore the archipelago, away from Puerto Rico’s busy capital San Juan and the city’s popular historic old quarter, which while beautiful, contains only a taste of what this country has to offer.

Vieques lies about eight miles off the mainland and is reachable via ferry or charter flight, with the latter lasting only 10 minutes and giving you views of lush green treetops and clear turquoise waters as you glide overhead.

It was baking hot by the time we touched down. In dire need of coffee, I was taken straight to Rising Roost, which as the name suggests, is the right place for a pick-me-up. Its owners Luz Yanira and Jose are from Puerto Rico’s central mountain region and took over the cafe in 2020. They serve up some of the best brew on the island and were poised at the espresso machine when we arrived. Hallelujah.

“Make sure you try some mavi ,” said Luz Yanira. “It’s what all the locals drink here, we love it. It’s a slightly sweet, fermented juice made from bark.” I ordered a glass and sipped cautiously. It was sweet and refreshing, with that subtle fermented funk – a lot like the kombucha I’m used to back home.

The north of the island is known for its traditional food, so in addition to having American classics on the menu, Rising Roost serves up drinks such as mavi as well as Puerto Rican dishes like el bote veggie , which is a local bread called sobao that’s stuffed with scrambled eggs and vegetables, and topped with cheese.

Fuelled for the morning, we were given a brief history lesson by local resident Angie, who was born and raised on Vieques and runs a range of tours . She explained that, like in other parts of Puerto Rico, you can easily spot traces of the 400 years the country spent under Spanish colonial rule. This includes Fortín Conde de Mirasol, the last Spanish fort built in the Americas (about a three-minute drive away from Rising Roost), and, more unusually, hundreds of free-roaming horses that still share the land with the island’s residents.

“Look now, you can see the baby with her mama,” Angie pointed to them in a clearing by the side of the road. The story goes they were introduced to the island by Spanish conquistadors and have since adapted to the local environment. “They’re very friendly,” Angie added.

Vieques has 15 beaches dotted around its 21-mile circumference, each with its own unique draw or requiring a little effort to reach (we’re talking bumpy car rides and woodland walks), but for those who persevere they can be idyllic pockets of tranquillity.

La Chiva Beach is the island’s most popular and accessible as you can drive right to the shore. Horses were quietly grazing in the shade when we pulled up and headed out for a swim in the clear turquoise waters.

Our second beach is known locally as Playa Negra due to its volcanic black sand. It is reached on foot down a path covered by a canopy of palm trees, where small crabs pop in and out the holes along its sandy verges.

Puerto Rico wears the dual hat of being a US territory and a Caribbean island . It’s also the self-proclaimed “ rum capital in the world”. So, of course, a visit here would be remiss without a tasting. On to our next stop.

We’re shown big vats of honey-coloured rum bubbling away in silver brewing tanks by Roberto, a member of the small four-person team working at Crab Island Rum, the island’s first artisan distillery, which opened in 2019.

“We [the team] are all from Vieques,” Roberto said. “I used to be a musician on the main island but after Hurricane Maria I came back to help, because everything was devastated and everyone was trying to help each other, of course.” He’s not the only person I spoke to who had returned to the island to help after Hurricane Maria reaped devastation in 2017. A category 5 hurricane, 2,975 of the 3,059 deaths were in Puerto Rico alone. It’s clear the region’s recovery was very much a shared one; its island communities rebuilt by those who call Puerto Rico home.

“Then I started here in 2021, trying a bit of everything,” Roberto added, referring to the different roles across the distillery from manning the gift shop and bar work (at their onsite bar), to learning the ropes as a rum producer. “We want to try and get people here who want to work and learn something different. We’re so small right now, but little by little, every year we’re trying to make something different to get a bit bigger.”

Our day ended at El Quenepo, an open-air restaurant run by husband-and-wife team Scott (chef) and Kate (host), who also run an adjoining hotel Puertas at El Quenepo, which gets its name from the beautifully restored doors fronting each of the rooms, taken from wood from the island.

“This building is kind of an amalgamation of Vieques’s history with a lot of nods to Puerto Rico in general but particularly Vieques because we’re a super independent community,” Kate explained as plates of crispy pakora prawns and spicy harissa arrived at the table, alongside a platter of local rabbit with spinach ravioli.

“We’re really an extended family here on Vieques. The island is all mom-and-pop businesses, we’re all small. So, you are supporting the person you’re seeing, you’re supporting each and every one of these people, it’s never a corporation owned by someone else.”

We stayed at El Blok, a hotel about a five-minute walk from El Quenepo down the main strip. Like other parts of Vieques, the street is lit up red at night so as not to disorientate the thriving leatherback turtle population on the island that you have a high chance of seeing when snorkelling – which we do the following morning.

“The seabed is covered with seagrass, which the turtles feed off when we’re out of jellyfish season,” said Sarah Elise, founder of eco-tourism group Crysal Clear , which among their tours run snorkelling sessions to catch a glimpse of the turtles and other marine life.

Crysal Clear was heavily involved in a coral reef protection initiative when a Caribbean-wide bleaching event threatened the reef with disease. In addition to their tours, they’re keen to educate about marine protection and weave this knowledge into their sessions.

We snorkelled out from the beachfront (no boats required) and within minutes saw a huge leatherback turtle swimming below. Three more soon appeared, grazing on the sea floor. I peacefully floated above them, watching a little more of the island’s magic unfurl beneath me.

Where to stay

El Blok is centrally located along Vieques’s main promenade, Esperanza’s El Malecon, making it a great place from which to explore the island. Its design has taken inspiration from the surrounding coral reefs, with patterned exteriors that allow in natural light and fresh air, at the same time as giving guests plenty of privacy across all of the hotel’s 30 rooms.

Puertas at El Quenepo

This two-story intimate guesthouse , located along Esperanza beach, has been lovingly restored by the restaurateurs behind El Quenepo (which resides below). One of the main features of the property is large wooden stable doors (or puertas ), from which it gets its name. The rooms all come with four-poster beds and antique furniture, while the bespoke interiors make this a unique stay. Prices start from around $165 (£130) a night.

Condado Ocean Club

If you want to stay in San Juan for a night or two before or after heading out to Vieques, the Condado Ocean Club is a good option. This all-adult boutique hotel is set on San Juan’s oceanfront with 96 of its rooms featuring water views. The rooms are beautifully chic, with floor-to-ceiling windows and clean white finishes. Its poolside parties are a guest mainstay, with a bar, music and plenty of loungers to soak up the rays.

How to get there

Flights from the UK to San Juan via New York JFK start at £605 return with JetBlue .

You can get a flight from Ceiba (to the east of the island) to Vieques. Prices start at around £80 return. Visitors can also get a ferry to Vieques from Ceiba, which takes about 35-40 minutes and costs $4 (£3) for a return ticket.

The 8 best places to visit in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of those destinations that just keeps on giving.

On your first vacation in Puerto Rico, you'll visit the more popular spots and well-known historical monuments. Then you'll be back. You'll go off the beaten track. Beyond the bioluminescent bays. Beyond the Puerto Rico beaches everyone raves about.

Visiting this Puerto Rico requires a little bit of research. Probably a rental car and a little insider knowledge from the residents. With more than 300 miles of coastline, the best places to go in Puerto Rico spill out from one end of the island to the other.

If you’re into exploring cities, San Juan has a vibrant museum and arts scene. Indeed, the capital can take you from the beach to the speakeasies in the blink of an eye. Here's where to go in Puerto Rico .

An attendee dances during the Saint James the Apostle festival celebrations in Loiza, Puerto Rico,

Best for live music

There are plenty of amazing places to visit in Loíza to watch live bomba music . Start in Piñones to cruise the kiosk strip and buy delectable fritters, like the famous empanadillas de jueyes (crab empanadas) and the plantain-and-ground-beef delicacy pionono .  El Boricua is a favorite with locals. Arrive early as lines can snake around the establishment.

After that, head over to El Imán Bar to listen to live bomba music and watch the bailaores (flamenco dancer) execute increasingly difficult moves to satisfy the drummers and the crowd.

Local tip: Bomba gatherings are informal and sometimes impromptu. To get a sense of the times and days for activities available in the area, it’s best to check out Corporación Piñones Se Integra , a nonprofit community-based organization in Loíza tasked with preserving the town’s traditional history.

2. Isla Verde

Best for craft beer

The ubiquity of Medalla advertisements in Puerto Rico makes you think it’s the only beer on the island. It may be the best local light lager – and at US$2 to $5, one of the cheapest – but in the last 15 years, the likes of Ocean Lab Brewing Co.  in Isla Verde have made Puerto Rico a haven for Caribbean craft beer lovers.

Local breweries across the island use old European and new American techniques to create beers with flavors unique to the island, like passion fruit, quenépa (Spanish lime), and mango. At Ocean Lab Brewing Co., try the crisp Mayawest lager and the Mambo passion-fruit wheat beer

Local tip: Elsewhere,  Boquerón Brewing Co , in the beach town of Cabo Rojo, has some excellent fruity experimental beers and ales. For a super-unique sip, take a trip South to Señorial Brewing Co  in Ponce for their elusive quenépa fruit beer.

This photograph is of the street scene on Calle Loiza in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico. A corner building is painted with the Puerto Rican flag. Cars and people can be seen along the street and sidewalk.

3. Santurce, San Juan

Best for street art and museums

Thanks to its central location – and its historical ties to music and culture – the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan has long been a meeting place for artists. Each year, top muralists and graffiti artists add to the district's creative reputation at the Santurce es Ley festival, a street party that invites artists from Puerto Rico and around the world to spruce up buildings with their art.

To see the best work, head to the Tras Talleres and El Gandul areas of Santurce. There are similar projects in Yauco, like Yaucromatic, and art installations in Ponce that offer an excellent account of the creative scene on the island.

Similarly, this San Juan neighborhood is home to some of the  most interesting museums on the island. Head to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico , an architectural wonder in the middle of the district, or try the more experimental Museo de Arte Contemporáneo , housed in the city's only brick building.

Local tip: There are tons of small museums around the island dedicated to preserving hyper-local history and events. Another favorite of ours is the Museo de Artes Populares de Caguas , which focuses on traditional Puerto Rican folk art and woodwork.

4. Old San Juan

Best for rooftop bars

Most of Old San Juan is worthy of a photograph or four, but hidden on the city's rooftops are some of the trendiest bars and terraces – and many have premium views of the island's fabled sunsets.

Some of the best include La Catedral at the Decanter Hotel, the perfect spot to admire the architecture of the Catedrál de San Juan over afternoon cocktails, and  Scryer Rum & Barrelhouse , a tasting house complete with rooftop lounge that offers rum-based cocktails and a look at the distilling process. If you’re up for a party, La Vergüenza , overlooking the La Perla neighborhood, is your spot for salsa and live music.

The downtown public square and church of Aricebo, Puerto Rico

5. Arecibo

Best for history

Often overlooked by tourists, Arecibo is one of Puerto Rico’s oldest towns. Officially established in 1616, it has reinvented itself numerous times throughout history – from pirate cove to the site of important astronomical discoveries at the now-defunct Arecibo Observatory . While the town center has seen better days, young business owners are slowly turning its storied buildings into high-concept restaurants and bars.

During the weekend, head to La Buena Vida  on Calle Gonzalo Marín for craft beers and creative, made-to-order pasta. Follow that with drinks at W Bar on Avenida de Diego, a hidden whiskey bar with a trendy tropical decor. If you’re still hungry, Ocean View Food Park  offers fusion cuisines, including Mr Don’s famous ramen, and fried chicken at Tori House.

A small cascade trickles down mossy rocks into a pool in El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico

6. El Yunque

Best for wild swimming

As the only rainforest in the US National Parks system, El Yunque has myriad species of plants and a series of life-giving rivers, many of which are swimmable.

Hiking trails in Puerto Rico can range from difficult to challenging, but if you want to do some wild swimming, take the Angelito Trail – a 20-minute walk down a muddy pathway that leads to the Río Mameyes.

Other wild swimming spots include the Las Paylas River, which has a fun natural slide that drops you into a tranquil fish-filled pool and Las Tinaja. Book a visit to either with a tour guide as access is via unstable terrain and some moderate climbing.

Local tip: Check the weather before heading to a river. If it’s raining, don’t go – flash floods claim many lives each year. A telltale sign of a flash flood is debris, such as mud and sticks, starting to appear in otherwise clear waters.

A violet-and-pink sunset view from Cordillera Central mountain range in Puerto Rico.

7. Cordillera Central

Best for hiking

Full of lush green landscapes, creeping fog and fresh air, the Cordillera Central mountain range offers some prize hiking. It also gets peppered by afternoon rains, so pack a rain jacket.

To explore the most panoramic walk, start in Cayey, right off the Luis A Ferré Expressway. When you reach Guavate, stop to eat at one of the many restaurants serving one of Puerto Rico's most iconic dishes : lechón (whole-hog roast).

Continue up the mountain on Road #1 to take in the rolling hills and rocky mountain peaks. There are also plenty of chinchorros  (food stalls) along the way to Aibonito, where you can stop for mojitos, tacos and artisanal drinks.

Local tip: Head out early in the morning to give yourself ample time to stop along the route. The town centers of Aibonito, Coamo and Orocovis are picturesque and offer great eats and local history.

8. El Poblado de Boquerón

Best for partying

A sleepy seaside town during the week, El Poblado (which means town square) in the Boquerón sector of Cabo Rojo turns into a massive street party at the weekend. Expect live music, karaoke and delicious street food.

Fill yourself up at Pelican’s Boquerón restaurant, where you can find a variety of local dishes like fried fish and mofongo  (fried plantain mash with garlic and olive oil). Then barhop your way through the square and dance the night away. Keep up your energy with a giant bacalaíto (codfish fritter) from the cart on the square. You won’t be sorry.
