Where to See Puffins In Nova Scotia

Last Updated on April 28, 2023

halifax puffin tour

Without a doubt the Puffin is one of the cutest birds in the world. Found in the North Pacific and North Atlantic they are a small little bird that spends a lot of time at sea. In the North Atlantic they can be found in Iceland, Ireland, the Shetland Islands, Newfoundland and as far south as Maine and even New York. They can of course also be found in Nova Scotia. But where exactly can you see puffins in Nova Scotia?

Table of Contents

Where Can You See Puffins in Nova Scotia?

In Nova Scotia there are three main islands where you can find puffins guaranteed every summer. The most popular spot to see puffins in Nova Scotia is on the Bird Islands in Cape Breton an official bird sanctuary. Not too far from shore the Bird Islands are two long and skinny islands next to each other just off of the Cape Dauphin area. One island is called Hertford and the other is known as Ciboux Island. The islands are uninhabited and have 20metre tall cliffs and ledges, with small amounts of vegetation and are the ideal roosting spots for puffins and other seabirds.

The other island home to many beautiful puffins in the summer months is one that many don’t know about. This island is called Pearl Island and is located on the south shore of Nova Scotia. Pearl Island can be found just outside of St. Margaret’s Bay and Mahone Bay about an 11km boat trip from Peggy’s Cove. Pearl Island is home to an automated lighthouse and not much else except for rocky shores and vegetation making it an ideal spot for a puffin colony and other seabirds.

While visiting these islands there is also the chance to see grey seals, bald eagles, blue herons, razorbills, great cormorants, northern gannets, and more. Be sure to bring your binoculars and a camera with a long lens so you don’t miss out!

How Can you See Puffins in Nova Scotia?

Puffins in Nova Scotia live on islands off shore, not on the mainland, so the best way to see them is by taking a boat tour. On a boat tour of the islands you will also have a guide and can learn a lot more about the puffins and other birds, animals and information about the area.

There are currently three puffin tours in Nova Scotia . There are two tour operators that take guests to the Bird Islands in Cape Breton and one on the South Shore.

When Can You See Puffins In Nova Scotia?

The best time to see Puffins in Nova Scotia is from mid-May to mid-August. Puffins spend the majority of their lives at sea and only come to shore to hatch their eggs and watch their pufflings grow. An egg takes around six weeks to hatch and then the pufflings, baby puffins, take about 40 days to grow and get ready for life on the ocean. They then spend their first 4-5years of life at sea until they mature and are ready to find a mate. Puffins live to be about 20 years old and go back to the same partner and nest every year.

Where Can You See Puffins in Atlantic Canada?

Puffins can also be found in other parts of the maritimes. They are often spotted on Grand Mananan Island, all around Newfoundland and Machias seal Island, a disputed island between Canada and the US. For one of the best puffin experiences however you must visit the Elliston Puffin Viewing Site in Newfoundland. This is also where you can get up closest to them as you can see their colonies from land and they often fly over to the shore very close by. Be sure to stay back and give them space and don’t try to feed or touch them.

What to Pack for a Puffin Tour in Nova Scotia

Even though it might be hot out and the middle of the summer when you go on a puffin tour in Nova Scotia it can still be quite chilly on the water. When taking a tour to see the puffins make sure you pack with you layers to stay warm and maybe even consider a waterproof jacket to protect you from the waves and unpredictable weather. For your best viewing experience bring a pair of binoculars as well so you can see the birds up close. Also don’t forget to bring your phone or camera and get a long lens if you can for the best pictures.

Where to Stay in Nova Scotia Before your Puffin Tour?

In Cape Breton there are many accommodation options available by the tour departure points in nearby Baddeck. One of the most popular places to stay in Baddeck is the Inverary Resort . The resort is centrally located in town near to the Baddeck Lobster Suppers and Alexander Graham Bell Museum. It is also a great place to end or begin a tour around the Cabot Trail.

On the South Shore of Nova Scotia the puffin tours depart from Peggy’s Cove which has several motels and B&Bs nearby including the Oceanstone Resort . The Oceanstone Resort is located about 5minutes down the road from the tour departure point so it is an ideal spot to stay for early morning tour departures. On property you will also find the Rhubarb restaurant which serves one of the best lobster rolls in the province.

Hopefully this post will help you plan to find puffins in Nova Scotia! If you liked this post please pin it to save for later!

Hi. Great post! I was wondering if you take the bird Island trip, whether they let you out on the island to photograph or if you just circled the island in a boat. Thanks for your response.

' src=

Hello! They do not let you off of the islands unfortunately. They might actually even be protected. They also are mostly cliffs so it wouldn’t be easy to do either.

' src=

I would love to see the puffins, but have motion sickness. What would you suggest?

If you go to Elliston, Newfoundland you can actually see them from shore! They fly over to a piece of land from an island and you can get quite close to them.

Puffins are adorable seabirds that are found in the North Pacific and North Atlantic. Known for their bright beaks and distinctive appearance, they spend most of their time at sea, but come ashore to nest for a few months. And while puffins are found in Iceland, Ireland and Newfoundland, they also call the rugged coastline of Nova Scotia home.

From their small size to their interesting appearance, puffins are fascinating and seeing these cute birds is an incredible experience – one that my kids still talk about to this day.

Here’s everything to know about seeing puffins in Nova Scotia, including the best places and ideal times to spot them, as well as tips for making the most of your puffin viewing experience.

halifax puffin tour

Are There Puffins in Nova Scotia?

Yes! Not as many as other places in the world, but there are puffins in Nova Scotia.

Where to See Puffins in Nova Scotia

When it comes to spotting puffins in Nova Scotia, there are two main areas that offer fantastic opportunities to see these unique birds: Bird Islands in Cape Breton and Pearl Island on the South Shore. These locations not only provide ideal roosting spots for puffins but are also home to a variety of other seabirds.

1. Bird Islands in Cape Breton

The Bird Islands, off the coast of Cape Breton, are an official bird sanctuary and a prime puffin-watching location. These two uninhabited islands, Hertford and Ciboux Islands, feature rugged landscapes with 20-metre-tall cliffs and ledges, making them an ideal roosting spot for puffins and other seabirds.

This is one of the best places to see puffins in Nova Scotia, and many tours guarantee sightings of puffins during the summer months.

While the Bird Islands are known for being a nesting spot for puffin colonies, they are also home to many other sea birds, such as common terns, cormorants, razorbills and northern gannets.

2. Pearl Island on the South Shore

Pearl Island, located offshore near St. Margaret’s Bay and Mahone Bay, offers a different but equally fantastic experience to see puffins in Nova Scotia. This island has an automated lighthouse and is known for its rocky shores, which are great for puffin colonies and other seabirds.

On Pearl Island, you can spot not only puffins but also grey seals, bald eagles, blue herons, razorbills and common terns. The colony here has over 200 puffins, making it a perfect opportunity to observe these unique birds in their natural habitat.

3. Brier Island in Digby Neck

Brier Island, located on the western tip of Nova Scotia, is best known for its whale-watching experiences, however, it’s also home to plenty of seabirds, including puffins.

While puffins aren’t as prevalent here as on the Bird Islands, they can occasionally be spotted along with other seabirds like razorbills, common terns, cormorants and northern gannets.

How to See Them: Best Puffin Tours in Nova Scotia

To see puffins in Nova Scotia, you’ll need to take a boat tour.

While puffins live on coastal cliffs in some areas of the Northern Atlantic, in Nova Scotia they are found on offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks.

Boat tours take you close to the islands where you can spot these incredible birds, and along the way, guides will tell you about puffins and other animals that you’ll see in the area.

Here are the five best puffin tours in Nova Scotia.

1. Bird Island Tours: Cape Breton

Bird Island Tours has been leading puffin-watching experiences for over 50 years. Take a short 40-minute ride on the Puffin Express out to the island nesting area where you’ll have plenty of time to spot these interesting birds nesting on the cliff face. Sightings of puffins are guaranteed from mid-May to mid-August.

Tours run three times a day and leave from Big Bras d’Or in Cape Breton, lasting just under 3 hours. Binoculars are recommended and available to rent, or you can bring your own.

💲Prices are $52 for adults and $39 for kids.

2. Donelda’s Bird Island Puffin Tours: Cape Breton

Located just 20 minutes from Baddeck, Donelda’s Puffin Boat Tours is another popular way to see the adorable Atlantic Puffins.

Tours take you out to the Bird Islands, where you will be able to see puffins nesting on the cliffs, as well as other seabirds along the coast. Tours leave from the wharf in Englishtown several times a day and last 2.5 hours.

Puffin sightings are guaranteed during the summer months, and you’ll also have a chance to see razorbills, Arctic terns, bald eagles, and other seabirds. Grey seals are also seen from mid-June to early October.

💲Prices are $57 for adults and $32 for kids. Kids under 6 are free.

3. Peggy’s Cove Boat Tours

Peggy’s Cove Boat Tours , operating out of Peggy’s Cove, offers a daily 2.5-hour tour that heads out to Pearl Island, one of the most southern Puffin nesting colonies in Nova Scotia.

Tours depart every morning from Peggy’s Cove wharf and last 2.5 hours. After viewing the puffins on Pearl Island, the tour stops at Seal Rock to watch seals sunbathing or feeding, before returning to Peggy’s Cove.

💲Prices are $80 for adults and $50 for children.

4. Freeport Whale & Seabird Tours – Brier Island

While Freeport Whale & Seabird Tours primarily focus on whale watching, their tours also offer the chance to spot dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins and other seabirds.

These tours last between 3 and 4 hours, and guides provide an informative and educational experience about local sea life in the area. The tours also pass by a local colony of grey seals, where you’ll have the chance to see these fun creatures up close.

Tours run from July to mid-September, with three cruises a day and depart near the Ferryport-Westport ferry in Freeport.

💲Prices are $47 for adults and kids under 12 are $27.

5. Brier Island Whale & Seabird Cruises – Brier Island

One of the longest-running whale-watching companies in Nova Scotia, Brier Island Whale & Seabird Cruises provides opportunities to see not only whales but also dolphins, porpoises and a range of seabirds, including Great Blue Herons, razorbills, terns and puffins.

Choose between two different types of boats: a zodiac, which gets you close to the water, or a larger boat that has seats and bathroom facilities for added comfort.

Tours run from June to October and are offered three times a day. The larger boat tours last between 3-5 hours, and kids of all ages are welcome.

💲 Prices are $50 for adults and $28 for kids. Zodiac tours are 2 – 2.5 hours in length and are not suitable for kids under the age of 8. Prices are $70 for adults and $45 for children 8 and older.

When to See Puffins in Nova Scotia

The best time to see puffins in Nova Scotia is between the end of May and mid-August. This is when they are most active and the chances of seeing these adorable creatures are the highest.

Puffins live mostly at sea and only come to shore to hatch eggs. The adults find a spot among the crevices and rocky shoreline to nest. The eggs take six weeks to hatch, and once hatched, it takes approximately 40 days for the young pufflings to develop and ready to begin ocean life.

Fun fact: Puffins keep the same partner and always go back to the same nest every year.

Other Places to See Puffins in Atlantic Canada

In addition to these three places to see puffins in Nova Scotia, there are several other places in Atlantic Canada where you can see them.

Newfoundland:

Newfoundland has plenty of opportunities to see puffins, in fact, the puffin is their provincial bird. Witless Bay Ecological Reserve , just a few kilometres off the Avalon Peninsula, is one of the best places to see puffins, while the Bonavista Peninsula is one of the best spots for viewing puffins from the shore. Elliston offers the closest view of these seabirds, as puffins fly close to viewers and often land on the cliffs just a few feet away.

New Brunswick:

While this island is not technically part of New Brunswick (it’s located in disputed waters between Canada and the U.S.), Machias Seal Island is just 19km south of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick and is known for its puffin colonies.

Tips for Seeing Puffins

  • The best time to see puffins is from the beginning of June until mid-August . Around the middle of the month, puffins begin to head back to the ocean, so while you may still see some, your best chances are earlier in the month.
  • Bring binoculars and a zoom lens . Since you can only view puffins from a distance, it’s best to use binoculars to see them. Some tour companies rent binoculars if you don’t have your own. And you might want to consider a zoom lens for your camera to capture close-up shots of these gorgeous birds.
  • Book boat tours early . Puffin tours are popular, especially during the summer months, so it’s a good idea to book your boat tour in advance so you won’t be disappointed!
  • Dress for the weather . Our Nova Scotia weather is known to be unpredictable, especially when you’re along the coast or on the water. Even in the summer, you might want layers and a waterproof jacket. A good idea is to wear a tee or long-sleeved shirt, with the option of a light sweater and waterproof jacket to go overtop if needed.

Where to Stay to See Puffins in Nova Scotia

There are several great options for accommodations, no matter which area you are planning to see puffins in Nova Scotia.

Baddeck in Cape Breton is a short drive to both tours that head to Bird Island. Telegraph House Motel or Auberge Gisele’s Inn are great choices in Baddeck.

In Peggy’s Cove, on the south shore, Oceanstone Resort is only 5 minutes from the departure point, and also has an excellent Nordic spa if you’re looking to relax after your tour!

Near Brier Island, there are several campgrounds and motels in the area, or Digby is only an hour’s drive away. Brier Island Lodge is near the Westport Harbour and in Digby, the Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa is a great choice, featuring both rooms and private cottages, and an outdoor heated pool.

Tips for Spotting Puffins in Nova Scotia

If you’re planning a puffin-watching trip to Nova Scotia, here are some tips for spotting these adorable birds:

  • Know where to look – The best places to see puffins in Nova Scotia are along the rocky coastlines and islands in the Bay of Fundy. Some top spots include the Bird Islands, Briar Island, Seal Island, Cape Breton and the Tancook Islands.
  • Take a boat tour – Many of the top puffin-watching spots in Nova Scotia are only accessible by boat. Book a boat tour with a reputable company that specializes in bird-watching to increase your chances of seeing puffins.
  • Use binoculars – Puffins are small birds and can be hard to spot with the naked eye. Bring a good pair of binoculars with you to get an up-close view of these charming birds.
  • Visit during breeding season – Puffins are only in Nova Scotia during the breeding season, which runs from May to September. Visit during the peak months of June and July for the best chance of seeing these birds.
  • Dress for the weather – The coast of Nova Scotia can be chilly and windy, even in the summer months. Dress in layers with a windproof jacket that will keep you comfortable longer. This means a better puffin-viewing experience!
  • Watch for flying patterns – Puffins have a distinctive flying pattern, with quick wing beats followed by a glide close to the water’s surface. Keep an eye out for this unique flight pattern to spot puffins in flight.

🪶 Fun Fact: Puffins are poor fliers. Not only do they have difficulty going airborne, but they also need to flap their wings a jaw-dropping 300 to 400 times per minute just to stay aloft!

Are There Puffins in Nova Scotia – FAQs

Puffins-in-flight-over-water

Yes, Atlantic puffins can be found in certain areas of Nova Scotia, particularly on small islands off the coast and in protected coastal reserves.

While puffins may appear friendly and curious around humans, they are actually wild animals and should be treated with caution and respect. It’s important to view them from a safe distance and avoid approaching their nesting sites or disturbing their natural habitat.

Puffins are skilled swimmers and can dive up to 60 meters deep, but they usually stay within a few kilometers of the shore and their nesting colonies.

Puffins are typically active during the daytime, with peak activity around dawn and dusk when they are feeding. They tend to retreat to their burrows or roost on cliffs during the middle of the day.

Although puffins and penguins share some similarities, they are not closely related. Puffins are seabirds that belong to the family Alcidae, while penguins are flightless birds that belong to the family Spheniscidae.

Puffins are birds, not fish. They are members of the Alcidae family, which also includes guillemots and razorbills.

During the winter, Atlantic puffins usually spend their time out at sea, far away from land. They may migrate to different areas depending on their feeding needs and the weather conditions.

Yes, puffins are excellent swimmers and can dive up to 200 feet underwater to catch small fish and crustaceans. They use their wings to “fly” underwater, propelling themselves through the water with their webbed feet.

Yes, it is possible to see puffins in Nova Scotia in September. While the puffins start to leave the area in late August to early September to begin their migration south, there are still some puffins that remain in the area during September.

A large group of puffins is called a “burrow” or a “colony”.

Technically, yes, puffins have been eaten as a traditional food in some regions. However, in many places, puffins are now protected and it is illegal to hunt or eat them.

The puffin is sometimes nicknamed the “sea parrot” due to its brightly colored beak and its ability to “fly” through the water while swimming.

Seasonal Guidance / Best Times

Puffins, whales, & icebergs.

We’d love to experience puffins, whales, and icebergs on every tour but please remember that nature keeps its own schedule.

Our guidance is based on almost 40 years of tours plus generations as seafarers. The time of day generally doesn’t affect sightings, but time of the season sure does!

Peak Season

May to September

1

Marvel at playful puffins nesting on the cliffs and diving into deep waters.   Puffins arrive early May and can be viewed in large numbers through till mid September with a few staying till the 3rd week of September. Timing for the other seabirds varies by species.

Mid-June to Mid-August

2

Be captivated by majestic humpback whales as they explore the ocean’s surface.  Whale encounters typically peak mid-June through to mid-August (may vary slightly year to year). Whales may arrive mid May and stay as late as September but please remember that sightings outside of the peak season are a bonus! Whales are not guaranteed.

May to June

3

Early season, incredible icebergs often arrive just in time to enchant & astound our guests.  Iceberg season around the St. John’s area typically runs May through to mid / late June. Although we are at the end of Iceberg Alley and see fewer bergs than northern Newfoundland, the bergs here are often very dramatic as they near the end of their journey.

Why Gatherall’s tour boat is the best in Newfoundland …

Gatherall’s tour boat is designed to provide the best experience. Upper deck allows you to spot whales even when  further away ( think penthouse view versus ground floor view ). Abundant deck and rail space offers unobstructed views of the action. If you’re lucky, the whales may choose to visit for a closer look! Elevated viewing enables you to see further into the water & beyond. Raised decks at eye level with the puffin nests for best views.

The unique design of the cat allows it to travel further than other vessels. Featuring dual engines and slim hulls means that the cat can travel more quickly than other tour boats. It can also travel further to find whales & icebergs and spend more time.

Responsible Whale Watching

Please remember that respect for wildlife comes first.

All whale watching boats – big and small – are governed by the the same regulations regarding approach distances and practices.

Gatherall’s patient and cautious approach is often rewarded. Whales may be plentiful and curious, while other times they are busy feeding, sleeping or travelling doing long, deep dives – this is a matter of chance. To improve our success, our tour boat can travel further in less time and its high decks enable our crew (and you) to spot the whales from greater distances so as to not miss any of the action.

Our captains are familiar with their behaviour will try to provide you with the best possible experience without disturbance.

Our Captains communicate with the other boats to co-ordinate visits to ensure as few boats are around them at any given time. Sometimes the encounter is a short, fleeting glimpse as a whale passes through our area. Other times it may be a profound and intimate interaction as a whale(s) comes alongside to check us out.

Interactions are entirely up to the whales.  We’re just there to observe in a respectful manner.
