HGAT Guide to Paris

Who here hates cliches? Me! BW has been wanting to take me to Paris for ages now, but I’ve kept on refusing. Everyone goes there – be it for their 3 day, 2 month, or 25th wedding anniversary, romantic valentine day date, proposals etc. – everyone but me. This year, however, he tricked me. His birthday happens to fall in line with our anniversary, and there was no way I could escape the trip he had planned for us. But, this ended up being one of my favourite trips we’ve had so here is my guide to Paris!

trazy.com

Where to Stay

Being the difficult person that I am, I told BW I wanted to wake up and see the Eiffel Tower. He delivered! Check out our Eiffel suite at the Le Metropolitan Hotel :

Paris

Le Metropolitan is a modern hotel amongst all the classic French architecture, with a heated indoor swimming pool and chic and sexy interior.

halal travel paris

The hotel is a short 5 minute walk from the Eiffel tower and another 10 from the Arc de Triomphe; maybe a little far from the other landmarks, but otherwise a great location!

halal travel paris

If it is your first time in Paris, you must see all the popular landmarks, but if you’re short for time, I suggest seeing the following:

  • What cheese is to macaroni is what the Eiffel tower is to Paris. You just have to do it. Come night time, they have a spectacular 5 minute show at the start of every hour.
  • The Louvre is the world’s largest art museum and amongst the sea of tourists, you may get a glimpse of the Mona Lisa. There is also an Islamic Art exhibition on the lower ground.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Arc de Triomphe

Where to Eat

The typical Paris diet consists of cream, butter, cheese, and carbs. My dream city come true!

Guide to Paris

We started our morning at Carette, a little fancy cafe just down the road from our hotel. BW kept it light with a pain au chocolat, and I went for the crispy tartine with fresh butter and strawberry jam. To say that this was the best bread I have ever had would be an understatement.

Paris

If you’re on the hunt for breakfast places, here are a few options (you MUST get the scrambled eggs/omelette in Paris – I really regret not getting some whilst out there):

  • HolyBelly Cafe 19

Paris

The best croissants in the world are in Paris and I would happily grab a basket full and picnic in front of the Eiffel tower. You can also expect to find numerous patisseries that are halal friendly (use fish gelatine and no alcohol!). Here are a few that are worth the visit:

  • Yann Couvreur  – these are the BEST croissants I have had.
  • Berthillon – Paris’ best ice cream
  • Du Pain et Des Idees –  pistachio escargot is a must!
  • Angelina – beautiful setting with delicious hot chocolate
  • Pierre Herme
  • L’eclair du Genie – fantastic eclairs with no alcohol and made with fish gelatin
  • Patisserie du Reves

Guide to Paris

As for the halal (I know you scrolled all the way down for this), you’ll be happy to know that there are dozens of halal establishments all across the city and good ones too! I managed to visit three on my short trip out there – Le1818 , Le Crystal , and L’Echappee Belle – which were really good, but I’ll tell you about those in the next few posts. Check out this page for a full directory of halal restaurants in Paris (map included!).

Guide to Paris

Our short but sweet trip had finally come to an end, and as much as I made a fuss about NOT going to Paris, I really and truly loved the city. It has a certain charm about it, a relaxed and beautiful one, that places like London and New York will never have. And considering it is only a short 2 hour train journey away, I’m already planning our next trip out there!

HOTEL IN PARIS

  • Hotel Le Metropolitan – 10 Place de Mexico, 75116 Paris, France

MOSQUES IN PARIS

  • Grande Mosquée de Paris – 2bis Place du Puits de l’Ermite, 75005 Paris, France

TIPS FOR PARIS

—> As most cities in Europe, Paris is a place for walking so pack some comfortable shoes! —> Keep a close eye on your bags and valuables as soon as you leave the Gard Du Nord station as this is a hotspot for pickpockets.

—> Most phone operators have data roaming when in Europe so make the most of your google maps and download the HGAT Paris map on to it

—> Be sure to make the most of any Eurostar deals you see floating around – you can even catch a train for as little as £29!

—> You MUST eat the croissants out there, it would be a crime to leave Paris without having one.

Paris travel guide.

July 19, 2017 By My Big Fat Halal Blog

Final year of university was a killer! In the midst of lab work, dissertation writing and exam revision, all I could think about was getting away from it all, escaping and quite frankly, quitting uni (as if haha). Thus, I would often find myself procrastinating on holiday booking websites, travel blogs and mesmerising Instagram accounts. It led me to spontaneously booking a quick getaway to Paris just after my exams and before my viva. My mum, my two aunts and I went for just a day, and packed in so much food and fun that I thought I would share some of my top tips and all that we did to help give you some inspiration if you ever find yourself travelling to the city of love! <3

A post shared by My Big Fat Halal Blog (@mybigfathalalblog_) on Jul 21, 2017 at 10:14am PDT

TIPS FOR BOOKING:

  • Eurostar often release tickets for only £29 each way . Watch out for these in April, August and January.
  • Sacrifice your sleep and book the earliest train to Paris to maximise your day!

WHAT TO EAT AND DO:

Grab your trainers and travel by foot as much as you can! In my opinion, that’s the best way to truly discover a new city. You can also opt for a metro day pass. … buy this at Gare du Nord as soon as you arrive in Paris.

  • 9.30 am – BREAKFAST

Du Pains et des Idées – MUST VISIT

First stop was breakfast, of course. We HAD to go to Du Pain et des Idées , one of the best boulangeries in Paris! Keep it simple and get the escargot pistache et chocolat … and a croissant or two! You’ll need one for the journey home, am I right?!

PAIN PAIN is another great alternative for breakfast. They’re known to have the best baguette in the whole of Paris! I can also recommend  their cheesy pastries, lotus eclairs *omg* and their fluffy cakes!

  • 11am – SACRÉ COEUR

Next, we made our way to Sacré-Cœur. Climb to the top and witness one of the most beautiful views of Paris. When we went, a man was playing “La vie en Rose” on a harp and it was one of the most magical and breath-taking moments ever.

  • 12pm – NOTRE DAME

Take the scenic route and stroll by the Seine until you get to Notre Dame. It has huge queues outside but it moves pretty fast so don’t let that put you off!

  • 1pm – EIFFEL TOWER

A day in Paris would not be complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. We skipped queuing to go up and enjoyed some soft serve ice cream outside instead.

  • 2.30pm – LUNCH

For lunch, we checked out a restaurant called Le 1818. Their food looked incredible on Instagram and I couldn’t wait to visit. Unfortunately we didn’t love  it. But you can read more about that here if you like!

I’ll leave a list of other restaurants that I’ve heard are good at the bottom of this post!

  • 4pm – ARC DE TRIOMPHE

After lunch we headed to the Arc de Triomphe and took a walk down the Champs-Élysées where we ended up getting even more ice cream!

  • 5.30pm- GALERIES LAFAYETTE

Choose to shop at Paris’ most famous department store, or head to the food hall if you’re like me!

Here you’ll find the most delicious halal eclairs from L’Eclair de Genie ! They use fish gelatine so knock yourself out and try EVERYTHING!

  • 6.30pm- “LA TERASSE” at Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann

Just before you leave the area, don’t miss out on one of the most incredible views of Paris! It’s on the roof of Galeries Lafayette and it’s free!!

  • 7.30pm –   CAFÉ POUCHKINE  – MUST VISIT

By now it was almost time to leave and we were walking around trying to find a small bite to eat before heading home. This is when we discovered Café Pouchkine , the cutest cafe that you MUST visit!

It’s a big statement but their macarons and honey cake are some of the best I’ve ever had and it would be a crime not to visit!

P.S. A lot of these restaurants are closed between 2.30pm and 5.30pm so remember that when planning your day!

When we do citybreaks we tend to do a LOT of walking and don’t use public transport all that much. So for us, Paris’ Metro Carnet (book of 10 tickets) is perfect. Two great things about them:

1: They don’t expire so any leftover tickets can be kept & used for the next time you visit Paris. 2: They’re 10 individual tickets so you can hand tickets to friends who’re travelling with you and you both benefit from the cheaper price per ticket.

PARIS Halal-friendly holidays

Paris halal-friendly holidays general information, halalbooking guide for halal-friendly holidays in paris.

The cosmopolitan city of Paris has a large multicultural population. In fact, France has the largest Muslim population in western Europe numbering an estimated 5.7 million Muslims, or some 8.8% of the population. Approximately 10-15% of the population of the Metropolitan Region of Paris is Muslim, some 1.7 million people. Although there have been Muslims in France for many centuries, many Muslim communities settled here from the Maghreb regions of north Africa, during the period from 1954-1962, following the colonial wars of Independence, in countries such as Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. France’s Muslim community also has its roots in Turkey as well as in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

Paris is a popular city for Muslims to visit. It offers a good choice of restaurants serving halal food, great shopping opportunities and plenty to see and do. With the largest Muslim population in western Europe, it is also common to see women wearing the hijab. In short, most Muslims will find that they are pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoy a stay in Paris.

Islam is the second biggest religion in France after Catholicism. France’s well-documented policy of laïcité roughly translated as ‘secularism’ has its roots in the French Revolution, and was originally based on the desire to free public institutions from the influence of the Catholic Church. Over the past century, government policy has been based on the 1905 law to ensure the separation of church and state. This has led to well-publicised difficulties for some Muslim women, since the state is opposed to the wearing of ‘conspicuous’ signs of religious expression, which in some cases has been applied to girls wearing the hijab in schools. This is not something which would affect Muslim tourists visiting Paris, however.

Is Paris a good city to visit as a Muslim?

Halal food and restaurants in Paris

There are many excellent halal restaurants situated throughout Paris, many of which are close to the sights and the areas where HalalBooking’s hotels are located. Cuisine ranges from Middle-Eastern to Tex-Mex, Turkish to Indian, as well as French options for fine-dining halal food. It’s not possible to cover all of the halal food options here, since there are too many and they are constantly changing, with new halal restaurants opening all the time. It’s a good idea to look online for recommendations, but these are some of our favourites:

For French specialities try the Alambra Restaurant Grill , which has restaurants in two different locations serving halal steak, pasta and even raclette, the delicious melted cheese dish which is popular in French ski resorts. Le Petit Gourmet is conveniently located in Montmartre and serves classic French bistro dishes such as duck confit or fish soup, all made from halal meat. Try its selection of waters from around the world. Les Grands Enfants is on the Ile de France and offers a stylish ambience and grown-up French halal cuisine - perfect for a treat, but it’s best to book in advance. It is an alcohol-free restaurant and offers a good range of mocktails with a choice of set menus. Another French fine dining experience is Le Jumeyrah with its traditional French cuisine, all made from halal meat, in an alcohol-free environment. It is popular, so reservations are advised.

For world halal cuisine in Paris, you could try the alcohol-free Tilal , a popular Lebanese restaurant, conveniently located near the Centre Georges Pompidou in Chatelet les Halles. Le Wok Saint Germain is also alcohol-free and serves fusion Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese fare, in the fashionable Odéon district. Le Baili is renowned amongst halal food connoisseurs for its artisan burgers and Tex-Mex food. It also provides an alcohol-free ambience and is not far from the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in an un-touristy area. For tasty Moroccan food head to Argana , for reasonable prices and delicious couscous. Although it doesn’t sell alcohol, diners are allowed to bring their own. Those who are short of time or on a budget may want to try the delicious halal street food from Chez Cleopatre . This popular take-out stand offers Greek fast food with tasty falafel, kebabs, sandwiches, chips and soft drinks. Take a break from sightseeing if you are in the Opéra district - it’s not far from Montmartre and Sacré Coeur

Do restaurants in Paris have halal certificates?

Some restaurants are officially halal-certified, although it can be confusing as there are many different halal certification bodies operating in France, so there is little uniformity of standards. One of the most popular is AVS. The best advice is to ask in individual restaurants to ensure that the food meets your own halal requirements.

If you can’t find halal food nearby then going vegetarian is always an option - crepes or pancakes are usually easy to find, very French and there’s a good variety of sweet and savoury vegetarian options. If you get fed up of the usual soft drinks then you can always try a refreshing citron pressé or freshly squeezed lemon juice. It often comes with sugar or syrup and water to dilute and sweeten as required.

Mosques in Paris

There are over 2300 mosques in France, and since Paris has a significant Muslim population it is very easy to find places to worship. Many neighbourhoods have mosques catering for different Muslim communities.

These are some of the best-known mosques in Paris:

Grande Mosquée de Paris - Grand Mosque of Paris This beautiful mosque was completed in 1926 and built in the Moorish style. Its minaret is 33 metres high and it is the largest mosque in France and the third largest mosque in Europe. It was founded after the First World War as a symbol of gratitude to the Muslim soldiers who died fighting for France. During the Second World War, when Paris was occupied by Nazi Germany, it famously acted as a refuge for Jews, where they were given shelter and issued with Muslim birth certificates. The Mosque is set in peaceful gardens with its own small café serving delicious pastries, Moroccan tagines and refreshing mint tea. It also has its own Hammam or Turkish Bath, which is open to ladies only on certain days of the week and men only on others. Check for details before visiting as the baths have also been undergoing refurbishment work.

Omar Ibn Al Khattab Mosque This small neighbourhood mosque is conveniently located in the 11th arrondissement, close to the Place de la République.

Mosquée de Gennevilliers Ennour This attractive domed mosque was opened in 2010 and is an active community centre, situated on the outskirts of Paris.

Suburban Paris Mosques

Some of the French capital’s largest mosques are located in the suburbs. These include the Mosquée de Créteil also known as La Mosquée Sahaba , which is a modern, suburban mosque housing two large prayer halls for men, and one for women, which is home to an active Arabic language school.

Other significant mosques include the Mosquée d'Aulnay-sous-Bois , the Mosquée de Tremblay-en-France , which is not far from the airport of Paris Charles de Gaulle, and the biggest Mosque in France : Mosquée d'Evry-Courcouronnes .

Women-only facilities in Paris

If you’re feeling a bit weary from sightseeing in Paris and need somewhere to relax and unwind, then do check out these ladies-only spas. They are the best way to soothe tired limbs and feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

The Hammam Medina Center is an oasis of calm, open to women-only on Monday-Friday and Sundays. It has a sumptuous Turkish Bath, steam room, sauna and swimming pool and offers a range of health and beauty treatments. Recline in the relaxation room or sip a hot glass of fresh mint tea. The restaurant serves healthy salads and delicious Oriental pastries. The Hammam Pacha is a women-only spa in the heart of the 6th arrondissement. It was established 25 years ago by a Tunisian family, who still run it today. It offers a range of health and beauty treatments and has a Turkish bath and steam room, as well as a restaurant serving tasty Moroccan tagines. O’Kari is another calm and beautiful women-only hammam and spa, run by its Algerian-born founder, who keeps the traditions of the Hammam or Turkish bath well and truly alive in Paris, with her health and beauty treatments based on the rituals of the Orient.

Halal hotels paris.

Like other tourists, Muslim travelers coming from Islamic countries have particular requirements when they choose the destination for their vacation. Among these requirements, Muslims are concerned about the availability of halal compliant foods (no pork or alcohol in food) and a clean place to pray.

Many international hotels in Paris  do serve halal  food that is slaughtered in accordance with the teachings of Islamic Sharia and is free of any substances forbidden by Islam such as pork and alcohol.

Other  Islamic countries  such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Oman and Brunei continue to be popular with  Muslim  tourists. Among non-OIC  countries , Singapore, Thailand , the UK, Japan and Taiwan remain the top five respectively, but show improved scores on the index.

1. Hôtel Lancaster Paris Champs-Elysées 5* – Halal Hotels Paris

Hôtel Lancaster Paris Champs-Elysées

Hotel Lancaster is a boutique hotel dating from 1889, located just 100 m from the Champs-Élysées. It offers a classic and elegant atmosphere and its own Monsieur restaurant.

Rooms and suites at Lancaster are furnished in luxury fabrics and grouped around a central Zen garden. Some rooms have a separate lounge, a private patio or views of the Eiffel Tower.

La Table du Lancaster, a Monsieur restaurant, serves light and elegant meals in the contemporary restaurant or on the terrace, as well as a buffet breakfast in the morning.

The hotel also has a bar where guests can enjoy a drink in one of the colourful armchairs. A continental breakfast is also served daily at the bar.

This refined hotel in an 1889 townhouse sits a block from Avenue des Champs-Élysées. It’s a 10-minute walk from Charles de Gaulle-Étoile station, offering RER and metro services.

Polished rooms feature free Wi-Fi, iPod docks and satellite TV. Suites with a mix of modern and antique furnishings add separate living rooms; some have private furnished terraces and fireplaces. The hotel offers 24-hour room service.

The hotel has formal restaurant with a leafy courtyard; there’s also an elegant bar with 1930s-inspired decor. Other amenities include a fitness center, a sauna, 2 meeting rooms and personalized children’s welcome packages.

This five-star Hotel Lancaster reveals the French art of living and contains an extensive and valuable collection of artworks, subtly combined with contemporary elements. This address is a piece of heaven nestled in the heart of Paris that offers the utmost comfort and refinement to its guests.

The 45 rooms and 11 suites are mostly situated around a beautiful courtyard that provides guests with a calm and peaceful atmosphere, the ideal place for lunch or dinner, afternoon tea or cocktails carefully prepared by the barman.

Everything exceeded expectation including the luxuriously comfortable bed, the Clarins bathroom amenities, the cool light fittings. It was also impeccably clean.

Breakfast is served in a lovely room overlooking the courtyard which I imagine is great to sit out in during summer months. The food was very nice indeed and served swiftly with a smile.

The bar is impressively decorated. Not huge but a nice size and great atmosphere. The whole place has a calm feel to it and being a  boutique  size is not crowded or too busy which we liked a lot.

The location is also brilliant – just off the Champs Elysee you can walk to the river and the Eiffel Tower. There is also parking which was very helpful.

The Lancaster is a tranquil and beautiful,  boutique   hotel  with an unbeatable location just a few steps from the heart of Paris. The employees here are wonderful and look after their guests so well.

The welcome and service is top notch whether from the entrance, reception or bar staff. Service with a smile and professional too. Public rooms and the bar are cosy and luxurious. Our room was luxurious too and very comfortable. The place to stay in Paris.

2. Hotel Tiquetonne Paris 3 * – Halal Hotels in Paris

Tiquetonne

A 2-minute walk from Étienne Marcel metro station, this modest hotel in the 2nd arr. is 3.9 km from Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris and 6.6 km from the Eiffel Tower.

The no-nonsense rooms offer complimentary WiFi. Some rooms have en suite bathrooms, while others have in-room sinks and shared separate bathrooms (access to showers for an additional fee). There is no air-conditioning.

Amenities include breakfast (surcharge).

A simply decorated hotel where the welcome is warm. The hotel Tiquetonne is located in a pedestrian street where you will find shops and great restaurants. In addition, you can enjoy the proximity of the “Centre Georges Pompidou”, “Musée du Louvre”, “Notre-Dame de Paris”, the “quartier Latin”, The Basilica “Sacré Coeur”, the Châtelet-les-Halles commercial center, and many other points of interests. You can almost visit all paris by foot.

Our central location is ideal and conducive for tourism. The rooms are equipped with double glazing for a quiet and peaceful night.

Nearby public parkings will help you to find a place for your car.

A generous breakfast is also possible to start the day off right.

The hotel’s location is very good in walking street and very close to Metropolitan ( subway ) just a few minutes to walk to Marcel station. The room was small but very cosy in cold weather in Paris.

Breakfast, typical bread, jam, orange and coffee, was nothing exciting and 8€ each per day, so we chose to eat out.

The location of the hotel was good, it wasn’t far from a main  subway station and some nearby restaurants and bars. Easily walking distance to Le Louvre, Le Tower Eiffel, Le Notre Dame and Le Champs-Elysées.

That is a bargain in Paris, considering the location it’s a steal. My room didn’t have tv but on my first visit in November, I was on top floor at the back with a view to die for. On my second visit in January I was on lower floor and facing the pedestrian street, ideal to observe the life below. Despite this I didn’t hear a sound when I closed the window.

Yes, the rooms on both visits were simply furnished but the beds were ever so comfortable. Well taken care of and clean rooms. There is a wash basin in every room. The hallways are narrow and winding, the ancient lift slow but reliable. Shared bathroom and shower room kept tidy.

The staff are very friendly and seem chatty, as long as you speak  French . They speak limited English but it’s still easy to communicate. I bought a lot of cheese st a nearby fromagerie, had it vacuum packed and reception was happy to keep it in their fridge for me until my departure.

Tiquetonne will always be my first choice in central Paris when I’m travelling on my own. I’m not sure it would feel suitable when I go with my partner though. For a solo visitor on a budget, this hotel is on top. I will be back.

The hotel offers fine dining thanks to the legendary Fouquet’s Brasserie, with a menu created in conjunction with Michelin star Chef Pierre Gagnaire, and Le Joy restaurant, which opens onto an unexpected inner garden.

The location of the room is superb, just on the side street of Champs Élysées. When you walk to Champs Élysées, it’s about 10 minutes to the  Arc   de   Triomphe  by foot. The hotel is like a theater, dim light, old photos on the wall, dark red carpet on the floor, everything has a classic and chilled vibe.

The room is very comfortable, fresh fruit every day, the refrigerator bar is free if I remember correctly, the breakfast is Western, the breakfast can reach the level of a premium afternoon tea.

4. Le Général Hôtel 4* – Halal Hotels Paris France

Situated in Paris’ 11th district, General Hotel is just a 5-minute walk from Republique Square and has a fitness centre with sauna. Accommodations feature a Nespresso coffee machine, a flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi.

All the air-conditioned rooms at Le Général Hôtel have an iPod docking station. L’Occitane amenities are included in each private bathroom, which is equipped with a hairdryer and bathtub or shower.

Set in the Right Bank, this contemporary hotel is a 3-minute walk from Oberkampf metro station, 1.2 km from the Musée Carnavalet history museum and 1.5 km from the Centre Pompidou.

The colorful, modern rooms feature soundproofed windows, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs, plus Nespresso machines, desks and iPod docks. Some add balconies. A suite offers a living area and views of the Paris skyline.

There’s a bright, funky bar, plus a fitness room and a business center. Massages are available (fee). Breakfast is provided for a surcharge.

Our room was very clean, comfortable and well styled for such a small room (which seems common in Paris) – we even had a balcony which was a very nice surprise! I’m not easily pleased at hotels – typically because of the bathrooms, but everything was clean, and no visible Mold in the shower/tub combo and in the corners of the bathroom floors. Great shower pressure & hot hot water, and the (Skinjay) essential oil shower pods were a very nice touch. We slept great – nice comfortable bed & pillows. We had 1 large suitcase, and 2 small wheeled carry on suitcases. The space was tight (we managed to get our large suitcase opened on the floor between the door, bathroom and bed when we needed to access it) but it was enough space for 2 people. Complements to your cleaning staff, the level of clean remained consistent on each day we stayed (fresh bedding/towels), the coffee station (Nespresso!) & complementary bottled water was restocked every day. We were thankful for the small safe in the room (something that wasn’t offered in other hotels I considered).

As first time visitors in Paris, we were unsure of the location, but having the Metro  station so close ( Republique ) we were able to take the train in time to see the sunset at the Eiffel Tower on our 1st night, during our sightseeing & took it back to Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) instead of a taxi to save ourselves (30€) on our way home.

We were impressed how easy and clear the  metro  was to use (we never got lost or confused) and bought t+ tickets (carnet de 10 – 16,90€) for travelling around Paris sightseeing.

We did not eat breakfast at the hotel, as there were many places we wanted to eat at on our short trip, so we cannot comment on that aspect of our stay.

We used the free wifi in the evenings and didn’t have any issues with it, fast & no interruptions in service.

The staff is genuine, Morgan is wonderful. Incredibly helpful, and knows her stuff. So no matter the mountain of research you’ve done about what to see and do in Paris, ask her.

The  breakfast  is  delicious , room is very comfortable, as is the bathroom. Great shower pressure, temperature. No complaints.

They also send you an email with a checklist and asking for preferences, which I really appreciated.

While the location is great – two metro stations with 5 min. of the hotel, and plenty of great cafes, and restaurants, I wouldn’t say that this is the best place for a first-time visit to Paris (great for a second and third time though!).

5. Hôtel Les Deux Girafes 4* – Halal Hôtels Paris

halal travel paris

Hôtel Les Deux Girafes is located in Paris, 2.2 km from Opéra Bastille, and features a fitness centre, a garden and free WiFi. The property is situated 2.4 km from Pompidou Centre and 3.6 km from Sainte-Chapelle. There is a restaurant.

Guest rooms in the hotel are fitted with a flat-screen TV. Each room is fitted with a private bathroom with free toiletries and a hair dryer. All rooms feature a desk.

The daily breakfast offers continental and buffet options.

Set in a 19th-century former furniture factory, this refined hotel is 5 km from Notre-Dame de Paris and 4 km from the Louvre Museum. The nearest bus stop is a 1-minute walk away.

The polished rooms offer free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and mini fridges, in addition to air-conditioning and en suite bathrooms.

Amenities include a restaurant, a bar and a gym, as well as a garden and a terrace. Breakfast is available.

Rooms at Hotel Les Deux Giraffes offer air conditioning and a minibar providing exceptional comfort and convenience, and guests can go online with free wifi.

First, it’s located in a very up and coming  neighborhood – very chic, trendy, young. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be on your guard but we felt pretty safe in this area.

There are cafes, bakeries and restaurants all around – no shortage here and each day we picked different places to eat (we stayed a week) and then went back to our favorites for evening treats.

It is about a 7 minute walk to the metro and on the way you will pass some ateliers (or small clothing designer shops), an elementary school (which I loved as I am a kindergarten teacher), gorgeous fruit market, a supermarket (3 minutes away), small bars, antique stores, and just Parisian life.

By the metro is a traditional newspaper/magazine stand in front of which I had to take a photo because like who sells newspapers anymore? Our stay here was just delightful – even the rooms and hallways smelled delicious with a lemongrass scent.

We did not have breakfast here but they always included fresh, yummy croissants or pain au chocolat in a basket at the welcome reception area. The lobby is comfy to sit and wait for a taxi, or plan your day.

. Our room was quiet, the bathroom was immaculately clean, and the beds very comfy. Every night we walked around the  neighborhood , then picked up our favorite dessert, and ate in on the terrace. We met other travelers there too who were lovely to talk to. This was just a delightful stay. I have been to Paris many times and this would be my choice place to come back to. It is not in the heart of the tourist district but it was quiet and out of the way enough that you get a sense of every day Parisian life.

I definitely recommend “Les Deux Giraffes” for your first or repeat visits to Paris. It just had everything you needed when you needed it.

‘wake up’: israel’s new consul general warns of ‘radical muslim occupation’.

The Big Apple is in danger of falling under “radical Muslim occupation” like many cities in Europe, Israel’s new consul general warned in an exclusive interview with The Post.

“You know what happening in London these days, you know what’s happening in Paris these days and in Malmo, a major city in Sweden?” Ofir Akunis said. “They are under radical Muslim occupation.

“There are no-go zones and I don’t want to happen here in New York or in other places here in the United States,” Akunis warned. “They burned an American flag right here, in front of the doors of the [Manhattan] consulate.

“I’m calling on New Yorkers: wake up before it will be too late!”

In a poll taken shortly after Oct. 7, 57% of American Muslims said they believed Hamas’ attack on Israel was “justified.”

Akunis arrived in May as a wartime consul-general, replacing Asaf Zamir .

The former consul was married to the glamours billionaire Maya Wertheimer, granddaughter of industrialist Stef Wertheimer.

Zamir quit and then was fired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March 2023 — and the consulate had been without a full-time leader since.

Akunis took charge as major American universities were convulsed by pro-Hamas demonstrations and his schedule has been so packed since, he is still living out of his suitcase at a nearby hotel.

A massive image of the 9/11 terrorist attacks looms across his desk. Also nearby is a photo of his 20-year-old son serving in the Israeli Navy.

“Your September 11th is our October 7th. It’s radical Islam,” he warned.

Akunis said the antisemitism he has seen in New York City is the worst it’s ever been since Jews began arriving in the United States in large numbers in the late 19th century.

“My late grandmother — she was born in Poland 100 years ago — [told me] what happened in . . . Europe in the ’30s. I never imagined that we would see that with the young people here.”

The new consul praised Mayor Adams as a “brave leader,” and singled out Gov. Hochul, and Reps. Tom Suozzi and Ritchie Torres for their support.

He had less charitable words for the city’s Jewish elected officials — specifically Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader who called for regime change in Israel.

“The biggest problem in his speech was that he said that Israeli prime minister is an obstacle for peace. I think that was huge mistake,” Akunis said. “Even when I have disagreed with an Israeli prime minister I never said they were an obstacle for peace.”

Akunis said he agreed with the growing number of New York leaders who have called for the state to reimpose a ban on masked protests — which was lifted during the coronavirus pandemic.

“You need to update the law about the masks. If someone uses the masks just to hide and they use it to scream ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Death to United States,’ this is wrong,” Akunis said.

He refused to comment on the presidential race, but admitted he was “watching it closely.”

Relations between Israel and the United States have been tense for months as President Biden attempts to hold a coalition together that includes Hamas-supporting young people and Muslim Americans in swing states like Michigan.

“It’s not a secret that there is difference from time to time,” Akunis said. “I appreciate the American support for Israel.”

The Nation Resurgent, and Borders, Too

In France, as in the United States, feelings harden against immigrants, and President Emmanuel Macron and President Biden take note.

  • Share full article

Two people standing next to a fence covered in campaign posters.

By Roger Cohen

Based in Paris, Roger Cohen has covered immigration and other issues in Europe for 30 years.

At the heart of the rapid rise of the nationalist right, with its view of immigrants as a direct threat to the essence of France, there appears to lie a growing feeling among many French people that they are no longer at home in their own country.

That feeling, a vague but potent malaise, has many elements. They include a sense of dispossession, of neighborhoods transformed in dress and habits by the arrival of mainly Muslim immigrants from North Africa, and of lost identity in a fast-changing world. The National Rally, whose anti-immigrant position lies at the core of its fast-growing popularity, has benefited from all this.

“No French citizen would tolerate living in a house without doors or windows,” Jordan Bardella, the smooth-talking 28-year-old symbol of the National Rally’s advance to the brink of power, told France 3 TV this past week. “Well, it’s the same thing with a country.”

In other words, nations need effective borders that can be sealed tight.

This message, echoed by rising nationalist parties across Europe, and a central theme of Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign in the United States, has proved potent. In France, it propelled Marine Le Pen’s National Rally to victory over President Emmanuel Macron’s party in voting for the European Parliament this month.

So rattled was Mr. Macron by the defeat that he threw open the country’s political future with a risky bet. He called for legislative elections, the first round of which is June 30. France may have a nationalist far-right government with Mr. Bardella as prime minister before the Olympic Games begin in Paris on July 26.

The unthinkable has become thinkable. Almost a decade ago, Angela Merkel, then the German chancellor, immortalized the words “Wir schaffen das,” or “we can do this,” as she admitted more than one million Syrian refugees to Germany. Today, her embrace of immigration seems otherworldly, so completely have attitudes changed in Europe and the United States.

A similar gesture of “Willkommenskultur,” or welcome culture, these days would sound the death knell of most Western politicians.

Once the core theme of the xenophobic right, the push to control or stop migrants has moved toward the center of the political spectrum. The view of immigrants as diluting national identity, freeloading on social safety nets and importing violence has spread, often fed by thinly veiled bigotry. The once absolute French taboo against the National Front, now the National Rally, has collapsed.

Centrist leaders, including President Biden and Mr. Macron, have been obliged to shift from openness on immigration to a harder line to try to steal the thunder of nationalist movements. They have had to recognize that many conservatives, with nothing “far right” about them, identify with Mr. Trump’s words during a visit to Poland in 2017: “Do we have enough respect for our citizens to protect our borders?”

Early this year, Mr. Macron’s government passed an immigration bill that removed deportation protection for certain foreigners residing in France who engaged in a “serious violation of the principles of the Republic.” It imposed immediate expulsion for rejected asylum seekers. It attempted to revoke the automatic right to citizenship for children born in France to foreign parents, before the Constitutional Council struck that down .

If the intent of these and other measures was to dent the rise of the National Rally, the legislation backfired. For the left, it was a betrayal of French humanist values; for the right, it was too little, too late.

In a similar way, citing a “worldwide migrant crisis,” Mr. Biden, for whom the United States as a nation of immigrants has been a consistent refrain, temporarily closed the southern border to most asylum seekers this month. It was a drastic reversal, and many Democrats accused him of embracing Mr. Trump’s politics of fear. But Mr. Biden’s decision reflected the fact that many Americans, like many in France, want tougher policies in the face of record numbers of migrants entering the country.

Why this shift? Western societies of ever greater inequality have left many people behind, fueling anger. In France, a social model that worked well for a long time has been unable to resolve the problems of lost hope and poor schools in suburban projects where many immigrants live. This feeds further frustration. Tensions flare regularly between Muslims and the police.

“The government always protects the police, a state within the state,” Ahmed Djamai, 58, said last year during a protest. For him, to be Arab or Black, even with a French passport, was often to be made to feel second-class.

Immigration, in this context, easily becomes a dog-whistle theme. “This French sense of losing their country to immigrants is in many ways delusional,” said Anne Muxel, the deputy director of the Center for Political Research at Sciences Po University in Paris. “It’s tied to disorientation, lost control and life getting harder. The National Rally gets that in its DNA, whereas it’s not in the DNA of Macron.”

The cultures of the United States and France differ profoundly. One is a nation formed through immigration with a self-renewing core; the other, France, is a more rigid country where the integration of “visible minorities,” a term mainly referring to Muslims, has challenged the nation’s self-image.

Still, many people in each country, to some degree, fear a loss of identity, an anxiety on which leaders like Ms. Le Pen or Mr. Trump can play. In the United States, it is the specter of non-Hispanic white America becoming a minority by midcentury. Americans’ sense of the sanctity of the law is offended by the illegal entry of millions of migrants. The French focus on a threat to their way of life, a feeling compounded by repeated acts of Islamist terrorism over the past decade.

The consensus that “the situation with Muslim immigrants has become insoluble” is now so entrenched across the political spectrum that “there is no serious debate on immigration although it’s at the center of the campaign,” said Hakim El Karoui, a prominent consultant on immigration issues.

Ms. Le Pen has worked hard for over a decade to normalize her father’s fringe racist party. She expunged its antisemitism, reversed calls to exit the 27-nation European Union and adopted a generally moderate tone.

Still, the party’s core view that immigrants dilute the national body — held up as a glorious and mystical thing — endures. She has said that the party, if elected, will seek to ban use of the Muslim head scarf in public.

She and Mr. Bardella embrace the idea of “national preference” — essentially systematic discrimination between foreigners and French citizens when it comes to access to jobs, subsidized housing, certain health benefits and other social assistance.

Mr. Bardella said this past week that immigrants legally in France “who work, pay their taxes and respect the law have nothing to fear from my arrival at Matignon,” the residence of the prime minister. This was intended to be a reassuring pitch for the top job.

But the unemployment rate in France is 7.5 percent, with 2.3 million people jobless. The rate is higher among immigrants, around 12 percent in 2021, according to a study last year by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies. Many of them could be vulnerable.

About 140,000 migrants applied for asylum last year, according to the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and the Stateless. That is double the number of a decade ago. Gérald Darmanin, the interior minister, estimated last year that there were 600,000 to 900,000 illegal immigrants in France.

“An assault on personal freedoms by Le Pen and Bardella is likely,” said Célia Belin, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations in Paris.

At a Bardella rally in Montbeliard, in eastern France, Laurent Nansé, 53, who runs a funeral home, said he had recently inherited a family house and had been looking through albums from his youth. “There were no veiled women, nobody from the Maghreb, no Africans,” he said. “Now at Ramadan, the supermarkets are full of advertising for that. I don’t see any advertising for Lent.”

He said he believed that Mr. Bardella has what it takes to lead the country. “I am so sick of Macron’s little of this, little of that,” he said.

At a news conference last week, Mr. Macron seemed to grapple with his own failures. He linked the rise of the “extreme right” to “doubts about what we are becoming, existential anxiety.”

In response, he said, it was essential to stand firm. He cited his immigration bill and called for “cutting illegal immigration,” but acknowledged that “our efforts in this area have not been sufficiently seen, felt or understood.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Macron accused the new left-wing New Popular Front alliance of Socialist, Green and far-left parties of being totally “immigrationiste” — a word often used by Ms. Le Pen’s party to describe politicians who encourage uncontrolled immigration. In the past, the National Rally has called Mr. Macron an “immigrationiste.”

All of this is clearly an attempt by Mr. Macron to stop the march of the National Rally to power by hardening on immigration and security. The problem is that just as Mr. Trump has occupied the anti-immigrant political terrain in the United States, that ground is taken in France by Ms. Le Pen and Mr. Bardella.

Mr. Macron has tried over seven years in office to hover in the middle of a virulent debate. Mr. Biden offset his closure of the border to asylum seekers by announcing soon after that he would protect 500,000 undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from being deported and provide them a path to citizenship.

It is not clear that such carefully dosed navigation around an explosive issue will work. The atmosphere in France today is restive. “We tried everything,” Ms. Muxel said. “We need to try something new — that is what’s in the air.” It was in the air in the United States in 2016.

Of course, it was precisely the measures taken to construct and preserve a homogeneous society that lay at the core of the most heinous crimes of the last century. A core postwar insight in Europe was that borders should be dismantled to save Europe from its repetitive wars. Ever-closer union meant ever-expanding peace.

Those ideas, however, appear to have faded. This is a time of the nation resurgent, whatever the perils of that.

A cartoon this past week on the front page of Le Canard Enchainé, the satirical newspaper, showed a Frenchman in his beret, with a baguette and a bottle of wine, pointing a large-caliber shotgun with “National Rally” emblazoned on it at his head.

“We’ve never tried it!” said the caption.

More than 1,300 people died during Hajj, many of them after walking in the scorching heat

CAIRO (AP) — More than 1,300 people died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, Saudi authorities announced Sunday.

Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel said that 83% of the 1,301 fatalities were unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances in soaring temperatures to perform the Hajj rituals in and around the holy city of Mecca .

Speaking with the state-owned Al Ekhbariya TV, the minister said 95 pilgrims were being treated in hospitals, some of whom were airlifted for treatment in the capital, Riyadh. He said the identification process was delayed because there were no identification documents with many of the dead pilgrims.

He said the dead were buried in Mecca, without giving a breakdown.

The fatalities included more than 660 Egyptians. All but 31 of them were unauthorized pilgrims, according to two officials in Cairo. Egypt has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said.

Image

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief journalists, said most of the dead were reported at the Emergency Complex in Mecca’s Al-Muaisem neighborhood. Egypt sent more than 50,000 authorized pilgrims to Saudi Arabia this year.

Saudi authorities cracked down on unauthorized pilgrims, expelling tens of thousands of people. But many, mostly Egyptians, managed to reach holy sites in and around Mecca, some on foot. Unlike authorized pilgrims, they had no hotels to return to to escape the scorching heat.

In a statement Saturday, Egypt’s government said the 16 travel agencies failed to provide adequate services for pilgrims. It said these agencies illegally facilitated the travel of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia using visas that don’t allow holders to travel to Mecca.

The government also said officials from the companies have been referred to the public prosecutor for investigation.

According to the state-owned Al-Ahram daily, some travel agencies and Hajj trip operators sold Saudi tourist visas to Egyptian Hajj hopefuls, violating Saudi regulations which require exclusive visas for pilgrims. Those agencies left pilgrims in limbo in Mecca and the holy sites in scorching heat, the newspaper said.

The fatalities also included 165 pilgrims from Indonesia, 98 from India and dozens more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Malaysia, according to an Associated Press tally. Two U.S. citizens were also reported dead.

The AP could not independently confirm the causes of death, but some countries like Jordan and Tunisia blamed the soaring heat. AP journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat, especially on the second and third days of the Hajj. Some vomited and collapsed.

Historically, deaths are not uncommon at the Hajj, which has seen at times over 2 million people travel to Saudi Arabia for a five-day pilgrimage. The pilgrimage’s history has also seen deadly stampedes and epidemics.

But this year’s tally was unusually high, suggesting exceptional circumstances.

In 2015 a stampede in Mina killed over 2,400 pilgrims , the deadliest incident ever to strike the pilgrimage, according to an AP count. Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full toll of the stampede. A separate crane collapse at Mecca’s Grand Mosque earlier the same year killed 111.

The second-deadliest incident at the Hajj was a 1990 stampede that killed 1,426 people.

During this year’s Hajj period, daily high temperatures ranged between 46 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit) and 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) in Mecca and sacred sites in and around the city, according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology. Some people fainted while trying to perform the symbolic stoning of the devil .

The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries, and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities.

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on crowd control and safety measures for those attending the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the sheer number of participants makes it difficult to ensure their safety.

Climate change could make the risk even greater. A 2019 study by experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that even if the world succeeds in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, the Hajj would be held in temperatures exceeding an “extreme danger threshold” from 2047 to 2052, and from 2079 to 2086.

Islam follows a lunar calendar, so the Hajj comes around 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will occur in April, and for several years after that it will fall in the winter, when temperatures are milder.
