If you’re looking to make an exotic destination your next vacation, let’s talk about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Hawaii. The answers are as follows: visit Hawaii on a Carnival cruise (of course), and… visit Hawaii because this place is simply spectacular! Take a Hawaii cruise and explore exotic locations spread across four islands — the Hawaiian island chain is home to names you know, like Maui, Kona and Honolulu. These spots feature postcard-worthy waterfalls, volcanoes and some of the world’s most stunning, sunning beaches. You’ll find these spread across an island chain so otherworldly that you may forget you’re in the states! Best of all, that postcard you’re sure to send home will require only domestic postage.

  • Experience some of the world's most famous beaches.
  • Get up-close with a volcanic mountain.
  • Hula it up at a real luau.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Hawaii

Did you know that Hawaii is comprised of over 1,500 islands? You are probably more familiar with the eight main islands which include Maui, Hawaii and Oahu. The 50th state is actually in Polynesia, and offers an exciting backdrop of volcanoes and jungles to the riveting culture of the island natives. Featured below are a few of the best things to do when cruising to Hawaii:

Humpback whales in Hawaii

  • Spot a hoard of humpback whales as they come to the warm waters off of Maui to give birth. If you stick your head in the water you can hear their echoing voices.
  • Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center where people are on hand to teach you about the different cultures and traditions on many islands in Polynesia. For instance, attend a Samoan cooking class or learn how to start a fire using two pieces of wood.

Napali Coast, Hawaii

  • Tour the USS Missouri to learn about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that preceded America’s involvement in WWII. There is also a beautiful memorial in the area.
  • See the beautiful and enchanting Napali Coast. Whether from the vantage point of a cruise or on a helicopter excursion, you’ll be amazed at the waterfalls and stunning hue of this tropical coastline.

Fire dancers at a Hawaiian luau

  • Attend a luau. These celebratory feasts usually include hula dancers, flame throwers and a delicious dinner, all served outside with the ocean in the background.
  • Hike up an active volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You can feel the heat from the crater that vents steam from the volcano, and then go inside a lava tube.

Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

Kahului is located in Maui County on the west side of the island of Maui between Wailuku and Lower Paia along Highway 32 near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Pacific Ocean.Kahului is heart of Maui, and the only deep water port for the island. This is where the major cruise and container ships come in, the main airport, Kahului Airport is located here also. Kahului has great variety in shopping and services, but lacks the variety of fine restaurants that Lahaina has, although some of the local dining favorites reside here. There are few hotels and resorts in Kahului, there is however, a new golf course. There are four major shopping malls with the largest being the Kaahumanu Mall. Most of 'industrial' Maui is located in Kahului. It is here where one of the main power plants is located, most of Maui's service oriented businesses, and the greatest variety in shopping. Everything from small local stores, catering to residents, to large discount stores such as K-Mart and Costco. Kahului has grown a lot in the past few years, unfortunately the infrastructure has not. As a result traffic is congested most of the working day. The traffic can be especially heavy while exiting the Kahului Airport area. Rush hour traffic is especially bad, both in the afternoons and evenings, traffic from Paia and Upcountry bottleneck at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. Allow a little extra time for travelling through this area of Maui.

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Kailua/Hawaii

cruise to hawaii october 2023

Historians and researchers believe that it is possible that Kailua was home to Hawaiian families at least 1,500 years ago. The earliest settlers are thought to have lived fished and played on the slopes surrounding Kawainui Marsh. A Bishop Museum report on archaeological excavations of the marshland concludes that when the marsh slopes were first occupied about 500 A.D., agriculture was not possible. The report said that early Hawaiian occupants of Kailua apparently lived beside a lagoon or bay open to the sea hundreds of yards shoreside of today's shoreline. In the 16th century, Kailua attracted the ali'i giving birth to many rich Hawaiian legends, some of which may be found in written and oral reminiscences in Hawaii State Libraries. Many legends were born here including the menehune who were known for working at night in Kaiwainui Marsh and mo'o who took the shape of a large lizard that attracted fish. Kailua was densely populated before the arrival of Captain Cook and was the ancient capital of O'ahu's kings. The biggest event in Kailua and the entire Windward side was in 1795 when King Kamehameha I conquered O'ahu in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The King granted Kaiwainui Marsh and old Kailua, which included large freshwater fish ponds and saltwater ponds at Mokapu, to the warriors and chiefs that had helped him. The land was used in various forms for agriculture from sugarcane to rice to taro and eventually was used primarily for cattle raising. Kailua was a sleepy town of barely 3,000 in the 1940s. However, the events of World War II changed the appearance of Kailua. Kaneohe Ranch sold portions of land to the government for expansion of the Navy base and the Army's Fort Hase. Finally in 1942, Kaneohe Ranch closed down its cattle raising operations entirely, freeing thousands of acres for post-war development. Harold K.L. Castle, owner of Kaneohe Ranch, donated the land for many churches, schools, and for a new hospital. A new four-lane highway, tunneling through the Ko'olau Mountains, was completed in the late 1950s. In 1946, a small Liberty House (now Macy's) shop opened with three employees and upgraded to a full-line department store in 1953 with nearly 50 employees. The first bowling alley, a branch office of the telephone company, and the very first supermarket in Hawaii opened in Kailua in 1947. By the end of the 1950s, Hawaii had become a state and Kailua became the official postal designation. Castle Hospital opened in 1963. By 1960 the population was up to 24,400. The town has grown more than 100 percent since 1960 when its population was 24,402. It has a compact, easy-to-shop business district surrounded by mostly single-family homes. By 1992 50,000 residents encompassed a central urban core with surrounding residential areas.

Nawiliwili is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Kauai between Lihue and Nawiliwili Bay along Highway 51 near Ninini Point and the Huleia Stream.Kaua'i is divided into five major districts, or moku 'aina. Nawiliwili Bay is located in the moku 'aina of Puna on the southeastern coast. One meaning of puna is spring, and Puna has an abundance of springs and streams caused by its location on the windward side of the island. Around 1000 A.D., settlers from the Marquesas arrived, led by Punanuikaia'aina. He succeeded in creating a chiefdom independent of Kona in Puna.

Best Time to Cruise to Hawaii

Best time to cruise to Hawaii - Oahu

  • Find a Cruise

With plunging waterfalls, lush foliage, and unspoiled beaches, Hawaii is the quintessential tropical paradise. If you’re contemplating going to these magnificent islands for your next vacation, you’re likely wondering, when is the best time to cruise to Hawaii?

In Hawaii, there are certain seasons that are more appealing depending on what you’re planning on doing. Whether you’re hoping to go whale-watching, escape on a couple’s getaway, or avoid crowds, this is the best time to cruise to Hawaii.

What’s the best season to cruise to Hawaii?

Aerial view of Oahu

Shoulder season, or the period of time right before or after a destination’s high tourist season, is one of the best times to cruise to Hawaii. During summer, kids are out of school and families flock to Hawaii, which leads to higher prices and larger crowds.

Hawaii’s shoulder season, which includes the months of May and September, also boasts some of the best weather, making it a prime time to enjoy a vacation there.

When should I go to Hawaii to see whales?

best time to cruise to Hawaii for whales

Humpback whales go to Hawaii in search of warmer water to conceive and birth their calves. Planning a Hawaii cruise earlier in May will increase your chances of seeing them before they migrate to cooler waters for the summer.

If whales are on your must-see list, arrange a whale-watching shore excursion during one of your days in port.

When’s the best time for families to cruise to Hawaii?

Avoid the summer crowds in Hawaii and plan your family cruise vacation in May, just before the school year ends. In May, the rainy season will be over in most regions of the Hawaiian Islands, guaranteeing sunny weather for you and your kids.

Plus, you might even get to see a few whales from the ship (as this is prime whale-watching season), which is sure to delight everyone in your group.

When’s the best time for couples to visit Hawaii?

With the kids back in school in September, this is a great month for parents to go on a couple’s cruise to Hawaii. It’s the perfect way to celebrate an anniversary or birthday, or simply spend quality time together resting and reconnecting.

Couple walking on the beach

September is decidedly more relaxed than during the high season months. While you’re there, enjoy some of the islands’ best waterfalls, swim with turtles in the turquoise ocean, or experience an authentic luau and gain a new appreciation for this natural paradise.

Cruises in September visit multiple Hawaiian destinations such as Hilo, Kailua Kona, and Lahaina.

When should I go to Hawaii to avoid crowds?

Families with school-age children are likely to time their Hawaiian vacation during spring break or when school’s out for the summer, so the best time to cruise to Hawaii and share the island with minimal crowds is during the month of September.

When is the best time to see Hawaii’s flora?

Aerial view of a farm in Kailua Kona

Summer is the season with the most sunny days in Hawaii. However, during the summer it can also get quite hot and dry, and Hawaii’s typical lush vegetation may suffer from drought.

Avoid running into an arid landscape and instead cruise to Hawaii during shoulder season, when you’ll get to see plenty of sunshine with pockets of rain that won’t hinder your trip, but will keep the scenery fresh and vibrant.

Flowers blooming in Hawaii

May is the best month to witness the lush Hawaiian scenery covered in pops of vibrant colors, as it’s typically the season when the islands’ gorgeous tropical flowers are in bloom.

Be mindful that the weather can change drastically depending on which island you’re visiting and your location. The leeward sides of the islands tend to be calmer and sunnier than the windward sides, where you’ll often find cooler weather and more rain.

Whether it’s a family-focused vacation or a romantic couple’s getaway, it’s always a good idea to cruise to Hawaii. Start planning your next cruise by browsing our itineraries .

Traveling to Hawaii during October

Weather, crowds, & prices for october.

By October, many people are already suffering from the fall blues. If you think you need a little rest, Hawaii offers a paradise retreat with near-perfect weather , reasonable average hotel rates, and the ideal balance of calming natural beauty and exciting events. Here are some things to consider if you have decided to book a well-earned getaway in October.

Hawaii Weather in October

First up on our October in Hawaii review is the weather. Mid-fall is a good time of year, although the islands are slowly entering the rainy season. You might see slightly higher chances for rain, but nothing that would ruin your trip.

Hawaii rains tend to fall mostly at night, so the chances are that you will be sleeping soundly during the showers. Also, if it does rain in the day, the showers tend to be in sudden, short bursts. You can also consider booking your accommodations on the leeward side of the islands, as these spots typically experience fewer showers. The island you choose will also make a difference. Big Island sees the least rainfall, while Kauai sees the most.

Temperatures are perfect hovering in the mid to high 80s range. Evenings are equally pleasant dropping into the 70s. This is preferable to the middle 60s that you might see in the spring and winter months. September and October boast the warmest ocean temperatures, making October ideal for water sports fanatics. Even if you want to dip your toes in the ocean as you are strolling along the beach, you will find the tepid waters are a welcome surprise.

When traveling throughout the islands, you will see some variations of temperature if you are going into the mountains or climbing the volcanoes. Higher altitudes mean lower temperatures even in Hawaii. You can bring along a jacket, so you aren’t left shivering on your mountain adventures.

The only downside to traveling in October is that it is hurricane season in the Pacific. Although this sounds a little scary, hurricanes and tropical storms rarely hit Hawaii. It’s just good to know it is a possibility when you are planning a trip.

Hawaii Crowds in October

If you want to avoid crowds in summer, October is perfect. It is one of the least traveled times of the year as summer is over, and the holidays are still a few months away. That’s not to say you will encounter massive crowds of people at any other time of the year. It does mean that there is a noticeable drop in tourism in the fall months.

Hawaii Costs in October

October is one of the best times of year to travel to Hawaii for the budget-conscious person. Hotel rates are well below the annual average dipping down to about $335 per night. When you compare that to the peak season of $450, that looks pretty sweet. Airfares are harder to predict, but in general, October tends to see lower fares. You can always search for deals online.

Hawaii Events & Highlights in October

If you consider yourself a foodie, October is the only time of year to attend the annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival. Expansion of the event promises to make it better than ever. Here are a few more events to attend:

  • Hawaii Food & Wine Festival : This festival covers multiple islands over three weekends. Each event features world-renowned master chefs, other culinary personalities, as well as wine and spirit producers. The event promotes 100% sustainability and invites you to "Taste our Love for the Land."
  • Coconut Festival : This Kauai event honors the humble coconut with entertainment, cooking demonstrations, artisans, crafters, kooky coconut games, pie eating contests, a coconut cook-off, activities, and of course, plenty of food featuring—you guessed it—coconut.
  • Emalani Festival: This is one of Kauai’s most significant cultural events and is filled with songs, hula, history, and spectacle.
  • Maui Fair : The Maui Fair is a family-oriented educational event that features local food, entertainment, horticulture, livestock, homemaking, art exhibits, and competitions.
  • Ironman Competition : This is hailed as the most iconic Triathlon event. Athletes test their endurance and beat their personal bests on the world stage.

October is an excellent month to book your Hawaiian vacation if you want to see pristine weather, reasonable rates, fewer crowds, and many cultural events.

If Japan is on your travel bucket list, why not take the scenic route?

Holland America Line’s new Majestic Japan cruise will take guests there and back over nearly two months in 2024. During the 53-day cruise, one of the cruise line’s Legendary Voyages , passengers will also visit Alaska and Hawaii and Canada, and feature multiple overnight stays.

“This cruise allows us to offer Japan ‘from your doorstep’ with no more than a domestic air flight to Seattle,” Paul Grigsby, the line’s Vice President of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, said in a statement.

Here’s what travelers can expect.

When is Holland America Line’s Majestic Japan cruise?

The Majestic Japan cruise will sail round-trip from Seattle on Sept. 1, 2024, on the line’s 1,964-passenger Westerdam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The cruise will make its first stop in Vancouver. Passengers can then take in views of glaciers in Alaska’s Inside Passage and Stephens Passage, before visiting ports including Juneau and Sitka.

“Because we can linger on our way, we have chosen to visit some of the best ports in Alaska, including Kodiak and Dutch Harbor, before landing at Kushiro, Hokkaido as (the) first port of call in Japan,” Grigsby said. Other ports include Yokohama and Kobe, where the ship will stay overnight, Kochi and Hiroshima.

Thinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You’ll find Norwegian ships everywhere, from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

Some of Norwegian’s most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian’s Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries for 2022 and 2023 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn’t said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian’s Europe voyages range widely in length from just three nights to a whopping 19 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that include calls in Europe are one-way trips between Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens), and Dubai. Typically lasting 18 or 19 nights, these will often include stops in Israel and sometimes Greece, as well as visits to Egypt, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England’s Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy, Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece, and Istanbul.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included “Caribbean” in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you’re looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line’s Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian’s seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line’s Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian’s Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian’s Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Norwegian isn’t the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , which are sister lines that control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to early October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian’s biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 11-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 4,002-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,376-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night “cruisetours.”

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest and newest ships, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line’s 3,969-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024, and the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line’s relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian’s Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you’ll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.

The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Here are our best tips for booking travel in 2024.

cruise to hawaii october 2023

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

When to book flights for international travel, when to book flights for summer 2024 travel, when to book flights for holiday 2024 travel.

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month ended in May, but that doesn’t mean we should stop acknowledging all the AAPI talent that’s out there. After all, it seems rather unfair that an entire community of people from diverse backgrounds should only get a month to celebrate its achievements.

Moreover, considering that AAPI Heritage Month celebrations often focus more heavily on highlighting Asian individuals from outside the U.S. (and not Asian Americans ), it’s become increasingly imperative to recognize and elevate homegrown creatives—especially AAPI musicians who are boldly forging their own path in an industry where Asian Americans continue to face many barriers.

Below are some examples of such musicians who are finding success on their own terms. From rising indie darlings to fearless rappers to genre-defying singer-songwriters, these 12 AAPI artists, in no particular order, deserve to be added to your summer playlist—and streamed year-round. And while this list may be wide-ranging, it showcases only a tiny fraction of the immense musical talent found within the AAPI community.

Sarah Kinsley

Take a quick peek at Sarah Kinsley’s Instagram or TikTok, and you’ll see why the NYC-based singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist is one of the most talented artists of her generation. The Chinese-American musical prodigy often shares glimpses into her production process—some of her posts show her layering her entrancing vocals over dreamy synths, piano and/or guitar to create transcendent melodies. Others reveal her uncanny ability to make music out of even the most mundane objects and random sounds . In 2021 a clip of the intro to her song “The King” went viral on TikTok, leading millions to discover her signature style of ethereal alt-pop.

Bay Area-based Raaginder blends two seemingly incongruous elements—hip-hop and Indian classical music—to create lush, genre-bending symphonies that have wowed audiences across the country. The Indian-American violinist, rapper, composer and producer extraordinaire has performed at a number of prestigious venues, such as the White House and the Kennedy Center, as well as prominent festivals like Burning Man and SXSW. He also received an Emmy nomination for his contribution to “Ms. Marvel’s” soundtrack.

It’s no wonder that Spotify chose Emei as one of its Artists To Watch in 2024: every one of her songs features infectious hooks and deeply honest, witty and relatable lyrics. But the alt-pop musician is no stranger to the limelight. In 2015 she took a year off from high school to travel to her parents’ native China, where she competed on Chinese Idol (eventually placing third) as well as Dancing with the Stars . While a senior at Yale, she released her single “Late to the Party,” which went viral on TikTok and Instagram. The following year, Spotify selected her ADHD-themed banger “Scatterbrain” as one of its Best Pop Songs of 2023. With sold-out tours in the US and Europe last November and April, it looks like we’ll be hearing a lot more of Emei soon.

Born in Guam to a Korean mother and a Chinese father, Isa Yu has crafted her own take on reggae-inflected R&B, infusing smooth, rhythmic instrumentals with her silky voice and a distinctive island groove. For Isa, whose name means “rainbow” in Chamorro (one of the official languages of Guam), writing songs amid life’s challenges feels like “the beauty of witnessing a rainbow after a storm.” It’s probably how you’ll feel after vibing along to one of her tracks.

Johnny Huynh

An engineering major at the University of Washington who’s interned (twice) for SpaceX, Johnny Huynh isn’t your average college student. He’s also a social media star and one of Gen Z’s fastest-rising artists. After his cover of d4vd’s “Romantic Homicide” went viral on TikTok last year, the Vietnamese-American singer-songwriter began uploading other popular covers as well as self-penned singles like “The One That Was Meant for Me” and “Cheater.” His raw, heartfelt vocals have garnered him over seven million followers on TikTok and Instagram and a deal with Columbia Records. And he isn’t even done with college yet.

Indian-American singer-songwriter J. Maya has accomplished more in twenty-odd years than most people probably do in a lifetime. She’s a Harvard College alum, former Survivor contestant and a master of wordplay (literally—she became the youngest person to win a pun championship at the age of 17). After writing her first song at 16, the whip-smart Californian turned down early admission to Harvard Law School to pursue a full-time music career. With incredibly clever lyrics that reflect her love of literature, Greco-Roman mythology and, of course, puns, J. Maya has charmed millions of listeners with her unique brand of “nerd pop.” Who knew that songs centered on books and crossword puzzles could sound so cool?

Ruby Ibarra

With smooth precision and a fierce swagger, Filipina-American rapper Ruby Ibarra lays down incisive verses about race, her Filipino identity, the immigrant experience and other sociocultural issues, often switching seamlessly between English and Tagalog. The respected Bay Area rapper, director and spoken word artist is also a former biotech scientist who worked on helping to find a cure for COVID-19 during the pandemic. Last year she co-founded the record label Bolo Music Group to promote Filipino-American artists.

A classically trained musician who’s been writing songs for more than half her life, Los Angeles-based artist Chloe Tang got her break when she opened for Dua Lipa in 2018 at a venue where she’d previously been a security worker. Since then she’s released a range of sassy, unapologetic bangers, from sensual pop-R&B numbers like “Chloe Ting” to the grunge pop-rock anthem “I SEE U,” which calls out deceitful men in the music industry. An avid advocate for Asian American representation, Chloe embraces her Chinese roots and recently played at SXSW as part of an Asian/AAPI artist showcase hosted by rising Asian entertainment brand Jaded .

Brooke Alexx

Whether it’s emotional ballads like “Seriously” or bouncy pop tunes like her hilarious hit single “All My Exes’ Moms” (which has amassed over 25 million combined streams), it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that every Brooke Alexx song is a certified bop. The half-Japanese New Jersey native—who also directs many of her entertaining music videos and has previously performed at Lollapalooza—fuses catchy melodies with personal, candid lyrics that explore human relationships, identity and other universally relatable themes. Her tearfully poignant song “I’m Sorry, Tokyo,” in which she shares her regret over not wanting to embrace her Japanese heritage as a teen, resonated with many Asian Americans upon its 2022 release. Brooke will be releasing her debut album Big Mouth on October 4th.

Iam Tongi first caught the nation’s attention when he appeared on season 21 of American Idol and made the judges cry with his soul-stirring rendition of “Monsters” by James Blunt (the two artists would later perform the song together on the show). Iam became the first contestant from Hawaii and the first Pacific Islander to win American Idol . When Iam was 13, his late father—who constantly sought to nurture his son’s musical talent—spent his holiday paycheck to buy him a guitar—the same guitar that the teenage artist eventually used during his performances on American Idol . Since winning the singing competition, Iam has seen continued success with his singles “Why Kiki?” and “I’ll Be Seeing You,” which topped Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales and Rock Digital Song Sales charts, respectively.

Filipina-American singer-songwriter Lyn Lapid started uploading covers on YouTube and Instagram in 2018, but it was when she began posting on TikTok that her popularity really took off. In 2020 she released a short TikTok video of her singing the opening verses to “Producer Man,” an original she’d begun writing about her own unpleasant exchanges with an exploitative music producer. Soon it blew up on TikTok, garnering over 50 million views before she’d even finished writing the song. “Producer Man” landed her a contract with Republic Records, and in 2022, she was named one of Shazam’s top five artists to watch. Her star continues to rise, with recent performances at 88rising’s Head in the Clouds Festivals in LA and NYC and her single “Cruise Control” being featured in an Uber commercial for Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 .

Though born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Eric Nam launched his music career by auditioning for a Korean televised singing competition, where he placed in the top five. Gifted with sweet vocals, stage presence and onscreen charisma, he subsequently found huge success in South Korea as a K-pop star and an in-demand TV personality, his bilingual skills making him a go-to host for conducting interviews with Hollywood celebrities.

Named GQ Korea’s Man of the Year in 2016, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia in 2017 and a TIME100 Impact Award Honoree in 2023, Eric has also recently added acting and entrepreneurship to his list of many accomplishments. Along with his brothers Eddie and Brian Nam, he co-founded DIVE Studios, a popular podcast production company. Eric made his acting debut in the Forest Whitaker-produced psychological thriller Transplant (release date TBD) and will also be voicing Aang in the upcoming animated feature Aang: The Last Airbender . With his latest world tour selling out across six continents, it seems the sky’s the limit for the Korean-American multi-hyphenate.
