PortAventura Theme Park Tour
The story of PortAventura is as fascinating as the attractions it offers. In 1995, the Catalan authorities decided to build an attraction park on the site of an old industrial area. This very first park was already called Port Aventura. But the name changed as investors came and went. We remember for example Universal's Port Aventura in 1999, then Universal Studios Port Aventura in 2000, Universal Mediterranea in 2002, and PortAventura European Destination Resort in 2013...

Discover PortAventura Theme Park
PortAventura now offers 6 fantasy worlds, 40 attractions for all ages including a record 5km rollercoaster, daily shows, and cuisine from around the world. PortAventura is open from 10 am to 6, 7, or 8 pm depending on the season.
1/ México: Central America at PortAventura
This world is located between the Far West and China. México will make you discover a typical atmosphere of the big metropolises of South America with daily shows and several restaurants for the gourmets of Mexican cuisine!
The little ones will undoubtedly have fun with exciting attractions such as El Árbol Mágico, Magic Fish, Kiddie dragons, La Granja de Elmo, Mariposes Saltarina . They in turn will have a thrill on the Tami Tami rollercoaster.
>>Please note that some of the rides are reserved for children over 90 cm or 1 meter tall.
3/ Polynesia transports you to the natural splendour of the Pacific Ocean.
Exoticism and green nature, but you will have to face an erupting volcano, thunderstorms in the middle of the jungle and experience a multitude of emotions...
Tutuki Splash , for example, will take you through raging rivers. Refreshment guaranteed!
Kontiki is a giant swing in the shape of a Tahitian boat but the sea is dismantled. Canoes offers you a canoe trip in French Polynesia. Green vegetation and the sound of the jungle accompany the youngest for an unforgettable memory.
4/ China to discover Asia, its high mountains, its legends and its dragons.
The China world is located between Mexico and SesamoAventura. This world is one of great thrills. One comes here for the highest roller coaster of the park, the impressive Shambhala and its 76 meters high but also to challenge the loops of Dragon Khan!
Shambhala is the famous roller coaster of all records, we speak for this attraction not a roller coaster but a hypercoaster! The connoisseurs will understand. You will be propelled at 134km/h and 76 meters high. A photographer will fix this memory for you. Minimum height 1,40m and maximum 1,90m.
Dragon Khan is not much nicer than Shambhala. This roller coaster starts with a dizzying descent before making you link 8 loops in 69 seconds. The top speed is 110 km/h, which is a lot for a roller coaster. For the emotions, it is too much ;-)
Tea cups, Angkor, Area Infantil, Waitan Port are for the little ones but just as entertaining.
Finally, Magic Bubble and Destination Dance are two shows for everyone... Not to be missed if you still have some time after the Asian restaurants such as Canton, Dagana, Marco Polo or Sichuan .
5/ The world of the Far West plunges you into the world of the Cowboys.
The mythical America of cowboys, saloons and rodeos. Its country culture and its typical gastronomy.
Two shows are to be seen to immerse yourself in this atmosphere: Can Can West and Bang Bang West or French cancan on one side and duels on the other but with humour and for the whole family!
Silver River Flume takes you on an exciting river ride in a simple hollowed-out tree trunk... Refreshing!
Stampida is a rustic roller coaster made of wood but fast because your blue cart will compete with another red cart at 70 km/h...
Tomahawk is another roller coaster but for children. The ride is still very impressive especially when it crosses the other roller coaster Stampida.
Wild Buffalos and Buffalo Rodeo are buffalo shaped bumper cars for the big ones and the other one for the little ones.
Crazy Barrels will make your head spin endlessly and Grand Canyon Rapids will take you down a canyon in a giant tyre sliding on water...
6/ Mediterrània , we also have fun on this sea we all know !
The first of the attractions in this world is the craziest, Furius Baco simply propels you from 0 to 135 km/h in 3 seconds.
Estació del Nord is the little train that takes you through PortAventura to the Wild West world.
Port de la Drassana also takes you around the park, this time in dugout canoes.
Finally, to round off this exciting day, there is a beautiful parade with all the park's artists accompanied by the mascots: Woody, Ernie, Bert, Grover ...
This is " PortAventura Parade ", the last show of the day.

Uncharted: the enigma of penitence.
From 17 June of this year, adventure and video game fans will finally be able to experience PortAventura’s new roller-coaster: Uncharted . In this dark ride attraction, you’ll take on the role of Nathan Drake and Sully, who find themselves in the Wild West, searching for a treasure hidden 500 years ago. But you won’t be the only one searching for gold! After a pre-show full of surprises, you’ll hop on the indoor roller-coaster with a track of 700m, a height of 12m, and five launches with an acceleration of up to 1G. Ready to unleash your inner treasure hunter?

Did you know that PortAventura World is home to the tallest and fastest vertical accelerator in Europe ? It’s called Red Force and is located in Ferrari Land, a dream come true for those who love fast cars and Italian style. This attraction, visible from miles away, is the highlight of the amusement park and is reserved for true daredevils. As soon as you leave the station, you’ll accelerate from 0 to 180 km/h in five breathtaking seconds! Then you’ll be propelled to a height of 112m before returning to the station, via a breathtaking vertical descent.

Another sensational attraction can be found at PortAventura Park. When it opened, Shambhala was the tallest and fastest roller-coaster in Europe until it was surpassed by Red Force in 2017. Inspired by the Himalayan mountains, these roller-coasters take you to the grand height of 76m before descending at a 77.4-degree angle. Butterflies in your stomach guaranteed! Then more climbs and descents await you. Finally, after three heart-stopping minutes, you can safely get off.

Attractions for the littlest ones
Do you have little adventurers in the family? Then bring them to Tami Tami! It’s the only roller-coaster for children at PortAventura , located in SésamoAventura. Tami Tami still has exciting climbs and descents, while reaching a speed of 35 km/h, which will give those too small for Dragon Khan or Shambhala a thrill. And believe us, even the accompanying adults will have fun, too.
Minimum height : 4’3” (1.3m) alone or 3’3” (1m) accompanied by an adult Where : PortAventura Park: SésamoAventura

La Granja de Elmo
Stay in SésamoAventura a little longer and explore this family-friendly fun attraction full of animals. This is Elmo’s farm and he’s waiting to introduce you to his friends. Hop aboard the tractor and you’ll discover all the animals, from sheep to cows and chickens, and their homes. One ride won’t be enough to see them all, so you may want to repeat the attraction several times.
Minimum height : 3’9” (1.2m) alone or no minimum height requirement if accompanied by an adult Where : PortAventura Park: SésamoAventura

Flying Race
At Ferrari Land it’s not just about cars. Flying Race is a fun attraction for the little pilots in the family. Jump aboard the colorful airplanes with your kids, letting them steer while you decide how high or low to fly. It’s also nice to learn about the story of the attraction, which pays homage to the heroic pilot Francesco Baracca. This Italian aviator designed the iconic prancing horse on his plane, which Enzo Ferrari later used for his cars.
Note: Adults are not allowed on the ride without children.

For young and old
Street mission.
This dark ride dedicated to the Sesame Street world is a fun adventure for the whole family. The goal is to help Detective Grover on his special mission, and there’s room for everyone, from the biggest and bravest to the little ones. The attraction consists of a 10-minute pre-show and a 5-minute taxi ride, searching for clues to solve the case. Perfectly themed and interactive, Street Mission is an excellent attraction you’ll want to experience more than once as you’ll discover new details every time.
Minimum height: 3’9” (1.2m) alone or 2’9” (90cm) accompanied by an adult Where: PortAventura Park: SésamoAventura
Bang Bang West
Attending one of the many shows at PortAventura is another great activity to do with the family. Don’t miss Bang Bang West, a Far West-themed show that’s a great classic and one of our favorites. It simply has it all: comedy, actors, acrobats, shootouts, explosions, and much more. As if that weren’t enough, the perfectly themed area will further transport you into another world.
Where : PortAventura Park: Far West
Grand Canyon Rapids
Attention: you’re going to get wet on this attraction! But that’s all part of the fun, especially on those hot Spanish days. Grand Canyon Rapids is a classic ride at PortAventura . Built in 1995 its charm has only increased over the years. It’s turbulent enough to be exciting but not too intense to scare the little ones or the less daring. You’ll ride in a raft, carried by the current on the Colorado River, back in the days of the Far West. You’ll cross forests, rock walls and numerous waterfalls, while hidden bandits take aim at you with their water guns.

Portaventura caribe aquatic park.
With 16 attractions and pools , this Caribbean-themed water park is a true paradise. Located within the PortAventura World complex but in a separate area dedicated entirely to water experiences, Caribe Aquatic Park is the ideal place to cool off and have fun with your loved ones. Here, you’ll find something for everyone, with areas dedicated to the little ones, beaches to relax on, and thrilling slides. Among the slides, the must-try for thrill seekers is without a doubt the King Khajuna , one of the tallest water slides in Europe at 30m high.
Where : PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park
What better way to cool off than with a good water gun battle? Even better if you’re aboard a boat that takes you through a lively temple and jungle! This exotic adventure, suitable for almost everyone, is an interactive journey where you’ll get to shoot your water guns at anything that obstructs your path. The final battle instead is a fight to the death (aka last water drop) with the other boats and their crew.
Minimum height: 4’3” (1.3m) Where: PortAventura Park: China
Tutuki Splash
Inside the themed area of Polynesia, you’ll find one of the most beloved and popular attractions at PortAventura: Tutuki Splash. With two thrilling descents and guaranteed fun, Tutuki Splash is an unmissable attraction that promises not to leave anyone dry.

PortAventura is a park that has long flown under-the-radar. It was built in 1995 in Salou, Spain, as a joint venture by Tussauds, Busch and Universal; and just from those names it’s easy to see why it matches up to some of the very best parks in the world. Universal took sole ownership for a while, and eventually sold it off in 2004, but the park has retained, if not improved, its quality since then.
With the addition of the record breaking hypercoaster, Shambhala, PortAventura has alerted the world once again to its status as one of the very best theme parks in Europe, if not the world. Here are a few of the key rides that should get you salivating.
5. Dragon Khan
This beast of a coaster is one of the park's original rides, and has always been (until the 2012 debut of Shambhala) its flagship attraction. The ride is a Bolliger & Mabillard multi-looper, and once held the world record for the most inversions in a coaster circuit, with eight. Stretching across the China themed area of the park, located at the very rear, it acts as a majestic red backdrop. The lift hill stretches 148 feet into the sky and the first drop is 161 feet long, hitting speeds of 65 miles per hour. Some B&M coasters in recent years have been criticised for being forceless, but Dragon Khan has no such problems; it’s one of the most brutally intense roller coasters I’ve ever experienced, but manages that without a hint of roughness.
4. Stampida
Stampida was added just two years after PortAventura opened, in 1997, and is located in the Western area, with the theme being basd around a buffalo stampede. The ride is a duelling CCI wooden roller coaster; the company which really started off the modern love for wooden coasters. Despite only being 84 feet tall, the trainreally rockets around the track, and the ride has often been accused of being viciously rough. There is no doubt that it is pretty violent, but in my opinion, it doesn’t get to the point of being painful. (although it did once throw me around so much that it ejected my phone from my pocket!). A big surprise is the amount of "airtime", particularly on the first drop; you spend a large portion of the ride floating above your seat. Stampida is often put down in the roller coaster community, and that, combined with it being fairly concealed, means it’s probably the most underrated ride in the park.
3. Hurakan Condor
Between 1997 and 2004 it seemed like little effort (or money) was being invested into PortAventura, but once Universal sold it, its new owners, Caixabank, decided to bring about a new era. The first new ride to be installed was Hurakan Condor, in 2005. The ride is an Intamin Giant Drop, and when it opened it was the tallest drop ride in Europe, reaching an incredible 330 feet. Like everything at PortAventura, the theming is top notch; in this case the attraction has a Mexican theme, with the station being housed in what seems to be an Aztec temple.
One thing that many notice about Hurakan Condor is the wonky ‘hat’ that sits on the very top of the tower. Instead of being some kind of engineering error, this is actually part of the theme; if you look down it is actually the roof of the temple station building, which has presumably been blown upward by the Condor. In a park full of extreme thrill rides, this is by far the most terrifying. Being stranded 300 feet in the air is unpleasant even for the bravest of souls, especially when you notice how small even the massive Dragon Khan looks from up there. Because the gondola has 5 independent sides, it also moves the queue along very rapidly, so there’s no excuse to miss this phenomenal thrill ride.
2. Furius Baco
In 2007 PortAventura announced that it would be opening its first new roller coaster in ten years; and in some style too, it would be the fastest roller coaster in Europe. Furius Baco is one of the many extremely popular Intamin Accelerator coasters, which use compressed fluid to launch the trains at incredibly high speeds, in this case to 84 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds. As well as the launch, the ride also differs from the norm by using trains know as ‘wing-riders’, where the seats straddle the track, with two each side, leaving the riders exposed to the elements. B&M has made this design popular in the past two years, but Intamin was the first to implement it.
Furius Baco's theming is bizarre to say the least; the station is nestled amongst a beautiful vineyard, and the idea is that the owner of the vineyard, a crazy inventor, has designed a machine (the coaster train) to collect the grapes for him. Just as he is putting the finishing touches on it, his mischievous monkey assistant pulls a lever and sends the ride shooting off around the vineyard. This story is conveyed brilliantly with signs throughout the queue and then a pre-ride video just after the station.
Where Furius Baco falls down, however, in many people’s opinion, is in the quality of coaster itself. If Stampida is rough, then this thing is probably illegal. The train vibrates through the entire ride, and during sharp turns you are smashed into the over-the-shoulder restraints. One of the problems is that the ride is a big figure-of-eight, never going beyond about 40 feet above the ground, meaning that you keep all of that speed throughout the whole ride. Despite this, I still think the ride is fantastic, and the insane rush of the launch is more than enough to make up for the pain, especially if you can grab an inside seat, which seems to negate a lot of the vibration.
1. Shambhala
2012 sees PortAventura’s largest ever investment, in the form of the tallest roller coaster in Europe. Shambhala is a hypercoaster by both definition and model; it stands a magnificent 249 feet tall, 10 feet higher than the former European record holder, Silver Star at Europa Park. Hypercoasters are something of a rarity in Europe; there are currently only really two others, and a couple of smaller variants, so this is certainly an intelligent move from PortAventura.
Shambhala's first drop hurls riders 256 feet through an underground tunnel and maxes out at speeds of 83 miles per hour, making it just fractionally slower than Furius Baco, the park’s Intamin Accelerator, and currently Europe’s fastest coaster. The ride sweeps across the park behind Dragon Khan, stretching all the way from China around to Polynesia. Whilst the entire ride looks magnificent, the most interesting element is the turnaround, which has been dubbed an ampersand (&) and looks to provide some extreme forces. Early reports say that the ride also offers airtime aplenty, and that it could be the best at the park so far.
Closer than you think
For many holiday makers, especially here in Britain, Salou is a particularly cheap holiday destination and with regular flights to Reus airport (just ten minutes away from the park) the trip can be even easier than some domestic trips. As my favourite park, I’d strongly suggest a visit at some point this season; it’s more than worth it.
Avid theme parker and tennis player, loves travelling, especially to South America (and PortAventura). I used to write articles for the site.

It is not my first time to visit this site, i am browsing this site dailly and take fastidious facts from here everyday.
Hi Sebastian! As I live in Barcelona I always have had an eye at PortAventura. It's because of this why I don't totally agree with you in the point of investments at the Universal's years. The hotels, except for Gold River, where created at Universal's arrival, as well as the small water park. It was in their first year when they created Fiestaventura, the actually underrated and let down night show. Besides that, they created Templo del Fuego, despites now they mark it as a show to cut down costs, and Sea Odissey, a fantastic undersea simulator now unafortunately and inexplicably turned into a low cost 4D theatre. We can say those investments ended up very badly, but if they were maintained an run as originally planned they will still be on the resort spotlight. What can't be denied is that Universal spent a lot of money on PortAventura. :) Cheers from Barcelona!
Thank you for replying, I completely agree with your points, I was unaware that Universal had built three of the hotels, they obviously had a big impact on turning it into a major resort. Templo del Fuego is a fantastic attraction, one that I failed to highlight. I was not fortunate enough to get to PortAventura before they changed Sea Odyssey, but you could tell from the theming that it was once a great attraction, great points!
