Our Verdict

Compare to similar products, our analysis and test results.

The Excursion Pro K2 is a convertible tandem inflatable kayak with a 400-pound capacity that can be paddled with one or two people. It weighs 34.6 pounds and is made of three-ply PVC vinyl laminate with a polyester core. Aside from its conversion between single and tandem paddling, it features adjustable seats, foot braces, fishing rod holders, a phone/GoPro mount, a drainage hole, and carry handles. It also comes with two paddles, a dual-action pump, and a pressure gauge, as well as a small repair kit.

Performance Comparison

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - we're impressed by the solid performance and low cost of the intex...

Gliding and Tracking

The Excursion Pro may not look like much, but it handles pretty well on calm waters. An optional tracking fin marginally improves the already above-average tracking of this 12.5-foot-long boat. By eliminating any water-soaking fabric from the hull of the boat, the Excursion manages to have fairly low drag and be faster than we expected from a flat-bottomed kayak without a keel. When paddled as a solo boat, the lessened tracking ability of this model is apparent as we waggled our way across the lake. But with two paddlers in sync, the Excursion Pro can keep a reasonably straight line.

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - simple footpegs slide into one of three spots to help you plant your...

Maneuverability

Riding on top of the water, turning is a breeze, though the higher profile can catch the wind more than other lower-profile boats. You'll need to coordinate with your partner to avoid paddle-crash, but with a little practice, this kayak is simple to turn. We're not excited to take it over submerged objects, however, as it has one of the thinnest constructions of any model we tested, and we found ourselves constantly worrying it would pop. The Excursion Pro comes with two paddles. They're not bad to use, though they are a bit short and taper a little too quickly at the ends, not giving them as much power as better-quality kayak paddles.

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - getting out there is made just a little easier with the...

One of the reasons we enjoy the handling of the Excursion Pro is due to the adjustability of its seats. Not only can you easily switch between solo and tandem paddling, but each configuration also offers plenty of space to move paddlers forward and backward without running them into each other. This helps you find the best balance within your boat and better accommodate the space needed for paddle strokes. It's not a picky paddling experience either, as we often noticed that even an imbalanced boat handled quite well. This craft's 2'8" width is an excellent middle ground, providing stability for entry and on moderately choppy waters without being so wide that it's difficult to paddle. This isn't a craft we'd recommend for intense paddling situations, but for flatwater and calm days, it's pretty ideal.

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - the included pump is small but dual-action and comes standard with...

Ease of Transport and Set Up

The Excursion Pro weighs 34.6 pounds, coming in on the low end for tandem boats in our lineup. The duffel bag straps lack additional padding but are okay to carry for short walks from the car to the beach. Alternatively, you could inflate everything in the parking lot and leave the storage bag, pump, and extra pieces in your car instead. A carry handle on each end of the boat makes it easy to cart it down to the water with a partner. It doesn't have paddle keepers on the sides, though.

As one of the few models we tested that comes with its own pump, we appreciate the all-inclusive nature of this kit. The pump is small, though, forcing you to bend over quite far to use it. However, its dual-action nature does help cut down inflation time to something a little more reasonable. The Excursion Pro has simple Boston valves with double lids — the outer cap opens to a one-way valve for inflation, while the inner cap unthreads the whole valve, leaving a gaping hole for rapid deflation. It's effective, though we don't like the double cap leashes, as they frequently get in the way of each other and compromise the valve's seal. We also aren't fond of the aforementioned gaping holes, which had sand kicked into them more than once.

A drain in the boat's bottom helps you more easily get water out of this kayak before you put it away. Without any fabric to soak up water, the Excursion Pro dries out more quickly than many and is easy to wipe down with a towel if you don't feel like waiting. Once dried, deflated, and folded, it easily fits into its oversized storage bag. Deflated seats and paddles that can be broken down into five pieces all easily slide into the storage bag.

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - good handles mean carrying the excursion fully inflated is decently...

The Excursion Pro is plenty comfortable enough for leisurely paddling on calm waters. Adjustable footpegs add further comfort or can be removed completely for extra storage space. The Excursion comes full of extra features as well, including fishing rod holders, paddle holders, and a GoPro mount that converts to a smartphone mount. We're not convinced we want to entrust our phones to a rather flimsy mount dangling over the water, but perhaps with a floatation device attached, we'd be more open to it. The sides of this boat are lower than average, helping to keep them out of the way as you paddle. They're a bit low for us to feel good loading the vessel full of gear, but that's not what we would use this casual-focused kayak for anyway.

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - the inflatable seats are more comfortable than we anticipated.

Construction Quality

The materials and construction of this PVC laminate boat aren't particularly impressive compared to the many beefier boats we tested. This isn't something we would fearlessly paddle over submerged sticks and rocks without a solid exit strategy. We didn't have any issues with it during our several months of testing, but we read plenty of other online testimonials that led us to believe our fears weren't unfounded.

intex excursion pro k2 inflatable kayak review - perhaps not the most durable of constructions, we still enjoy the...

Should You Buy the Intex Excursion Pro K2?

Even for the boat alone, the cost of the Excursion Pro is priced below most of the other kayaks in this review. Once you add in all the extras — particularly the paddles and pump, this complete kit more than makes itself a high-value item. If you want a super-durable boat that you can really beat up, this isn't it. But if you want something to get out on the water a couple of times a year, this package is perfect.

A buddy of mine had bought…

A buddy of mine had bought one of these kayaks less then a year ago and the back end of it is really thin and has a crack in it now. Its only been in the water a couple of times and sun dolphin will not do anything about it. They pretty much told him he was burnt. I will not recommend anyone to buy one of their kayaks again.

Last year I purchased Four…

Last year I purchased Four Sun Dolphin Fishing Kayaks, one for me and three for my grandchildren who live with me.

All are 10 feet in length. Two are sit on, Journey and two are sit in, Excursions.

The neat thing is that the kids (15-16 & 17) prefer to paddle around the lake in search of fish over playing with their I-pad or X-boxes. We have boated bass over 20 and Northern Pike over 28".

All of the boats are well laid out for fishing with ample rod holders and tie downs for storage of gear and food. The side pads (for the paddles) are nice because they keep the sound of the paddles being set down to a minimum.

When we decide to eat, we will paddle to the middle of the lake and tie the kayaks together, we have heard comments about how strange it looks to see us relaxing and eating in the middle of the lake.

Intex Excursion Pro Review

The Intex Excursion Pro is the manufacturer’s latest inflatable kayak on the market. At first glance it looks very similar to the Intex Explorer K2 . The differences are not only in the design, but especially in the material and equipment as well as in the accessories. With the Excursion Pro, Intex has a much higher quality inflatable kayak in its range than the Intex Explorer or Challenger . In this review we would like to show you whether the extra cost is worth it and the strengths and weaknesses of the kayak.

Set-up and first impressions

The Intex Excursion Pro comes with a very large carrying case. Compared to the bags of other Intex boats it is coated and much more stable. With this bag we do not have the feeling that it will tear or get a hole after a few uses. The dimensions of the bag are very large. But that makes sense. Because usually you never get the boat folded up as compactly as it was when delivered. This also gives you the possibility to get the boat into the bag a bit untidily folded (in case you are in a hurry).

intex excursion pro kayak transport backpack

As usual with Intex, the boat is offered in a complete set. In addition to the larger and more robust carrying bag, there is a larger double action air pump for fast inflation of the kayak and two plug-in double paddles. In addition to the other Intex inflatable kayaks, the following accessories are included in the delivery:

  • Valve key to tighten the valves
  • good repair kit
  • foot brace for the front and rear paddler
  • manometer to check the correct air pressure
  • inflatable seat pad for a higher seating position in the boat
  • several fishing rod holders
  • one skeg each for shallow and deep water (instead of a general skeg)

We can already say that the additional accessories are a useful addition.

intex excursion pro complete package

Meanwhile, Intex has replaced the bag with a lightweight transport backpack with padded shoulder straps. This makes the kayak much more comfortable to transport, for example, if you go by train or bus to the lake or river.

Although the manual says that the boat should be built on a surface without stones and other sharp objects, we did not quite stick to it. If the boat skin would not withstand these small stones, we would like to know that. Of course we don’t want to force any damage, but the boat skin inspires confidence, because it is not just a PVC skin. The boat skin consists of a polyester fabric coated on both sides with PVC. In case of damage, the boat skin can be mended with the enclosed repair kit.

First the bottom and then the side chambers are inflated. The bottom and the side chambers are separate from each other, i.e. each air chamber also has its own valve. This multi-chamber system is common on inflatable boats in order not to sink in case of a hole on the water.

Inflating works well with the supplied pump. Admittedly, the air pump is nevertheless quite small and not very robust. Also the stand is very small. But that is not surprising. You should not expect miracles from the included accessories, especially not if they are in the scope of a cheap complete set.

intex excursion pro inflating

As soon as the air chamber reaches its final shape, check the air pressure with the supplied manometer. The chambers can be inflated up to 0.08 bar (1.16 PSI). This is not much for an inflatable kayak, but a little more than for the Intex Challenger K2 and Explorer K2 . If you have been on the water with the boat for a longer time, you should check the air pressure during a break on the shore. If the air and water temperature are significantly different, the air pressure in the chambers will drop and they will become slightly softer. But this is quite normal for an inflatable boat and here it helps to pump up. In the case of inflatable boats with a higher pressure (e.g. Gumotex or Grabner), this effect is not that significant.

intex excursion pro gauge

We found the handling of the valves less good. It is a little tricky to open and close the valve spring. The valve spring is covered with a screw cap, so that the valve is not accidentally opened on the water. The cap is only attached with a very thin string.

intex excursion pro skeg

Inflatable kayaks generally have the disadvantage compared to fixed hull kayaks that they have a worse directional stability. Therefore a fin can be attached to most inflatable kayaks to improve the directional stability. With our model we unfortunately had to find out that the fin holder is not attached straight. The sloppy mounting of the fin holder is annoying, because it will make the kayak even worse in terms of directional stability.

intex excursion pro skeg

Both the foot braces and the seats can be placed in different positions in the boat. For the foot brace there are 3 positions each for the front and rear paddler. You can also fix the seat variably to the ground with a long velcro strip. Especially the foot braces surprised us, because something like that is not common in this price class.

Since we are quite tall, we use the whole interior space to place the seats and foot braces. The backrests of the seats are attached by two belts, each of which can be fastened to the side chamber with a plastic carabiner.

intex excursion pro kayak footrest

At the bow and stern there is a small spray deck each. A wave from the front (e.g. from a passing boat) would still get into the boat because the spraydeck is sagging downwards.

The spraydeck is primarily used to attach the carrying handles. The boat is equipped with a robust carrying handle at both the front and the back, so that two people can carry the boat. The carrying handles make a robust impression. Unfortunately the opening of the carrying handles is a bit too narrow for big and strong hands.

intex excursion pro kayak carry handle

There are also small safety lines at the front and back of the outer edge of the boat. These are quite practical to pull the boat ashore. In addition to the D-rings, which are used to secure the backrests, there are two more D-rings in the front and in the back for securing equipment (e.g. the belt of a dry bag).

On closer inspection, we could not find any processing errors or unclean spots in the gluing, apart from the skeg holder.

intex excursion pro quality

In the scope of supply an additional seat cushion is included, which can be placed under one of the seats. The seat cushion increases the sitting position and is intended for children or very small persons, so that it’s easier to put the paddle blade into the water.

intex excursion pro experience

Review of the Intex Excursion Pro on the water

The Intex Excursion Pro has robust carrying handles, so that the kayak can be carried well to water together with another person. However, the low air pressure is noticeable when carrying it. Although the kayak is not very long for a 2-person inflatable kayak, it hangs noticeably when being carried. If you paddle the kayak slo and have to carry it around on river tours, you definitely need a canoe trolley in our opinion.

intex excursion pro carrying

The open construction of the kayak allows easy access to the kayak. Nevertheless, the bottom chamber gives way noticeably when entering the kayak. If you use the deep-water fin, you should only enter the kayak when the water depth is sufficient.

Due to the variable placement of the seats, you can paddle it solo as well. In the following photo you can see that the effective length of the boat on the water, i.e. the waterline, is much shorter than the total length of the boat. The reason is that the weight is mainly concentrated in the middle of the boat. Nevertheless, the Excursion Pro can be paddled without problems with a deep water fin. The speed and the directional stability as a 1-person kayak are alright for short trips.

The seat cushion is high enough so that you don’t have to sit in the wet if water (e.g. splashes when paddling or waves from a passing boat) gets into the boat. The backrest gives only limited support and makes a rather unstable impression. When paddling it supports only a small area of the lower back. If we lean into it properly, it bends away to the back.

solo paddling intex excursion pro

Cheap inflatable kayaks rarely have a foot brace. A foot brace not only gives you a much better hold when paddling. A foot brace also makes paddling easier overall. Since the feet and therefore your torso have a better hold in the boat, you can get the necessary power for the paddle stroke mainly from your upper body instead of your arms. This makes you less tired when paddling. However, since cheap inflatable kayaks are not designed for long paddling anyway, many of them come without a foot brace.

Although the Intex Excursion Pro is only designed for short and comfortable trips due to its low air pressure, wide and yet quite short hull for a 2-person kayak, the foot braces are a nice feature as long as the paddlers are not too tall. For each seating position in the boat (front and back as a 2-person kayak and in the middle as a 1-person kayak) there are 3 positions each for the foot brace.

For tall paddlers the foot braces are rather unsuitable on longer trips. Because even when the foot braces is attached in the outermost loops, we have to bend our legs too much when using the foot braces (see photo below). For short tours this is not a big issue. On half or day tours, however, it becomes uncomfortable. For small persons the foot braces can be a nice support to find enough hold in the boat.

intex excursion pro solo paddling

If you are paddling the boat solo and are tall, we recommend that you use the front bottom loops (which are actually intended for the 2-person configuration). Apart from the footrest, the interior offers plenty of room for a solo paddler.

In contrast to the 1-person use, the kayak with a 2-person configuration lies much better in the water. Also in comparison to the other Intex kayaks there have been some improvements. The directional stability are noticeably better due to the length of the boat, the air chambers have become somewhat more dimensionally stable and the maximal load capacity has increased by 20 kg. A speed of 3.1 – 3.4 km/h is quite realistic. The interior is spacious enough to provide enough room for two large paddlers.

intex excursion pro review lake

The double-bladed paddles (with a length of 218 cm / 2’2”) are well designed for the kayak and for the average paddling beginner, but too wobbly for longer tours. Unlike other portable double-bladed paddles, it’s made not only of 2 or 4 pieces, but even 5 pieces. This increases the compactness of the paddle, but at the same time reduces the stability. For intensive use the plug system of the paddle shafts seems to wear out quickly, which would make the paddles even wobblier in the long run.

For occasional and small paddling trips on the water, the paddles are still useful. Nevertheless, the paddles show that the complete set is only designed for occasional and short paddling trips.

paddling on water intex excursion pro

After a two-hour paddle tour with numerous landings on the shore, the kayak remained unharmed. The stress on the boat skin and on the boat itself were comparatively low in our review. There were good conditions (no wind) and the lake had only gravel banks. This is exactly what we consider the boat suitable for. In our opinion, the kayak is not the best choice for river tours with possible ground contact as well as half or day tours on lakes.

intex excursion pro inflatable kayak

Dismantling the kayak

If there is water in the boat, the drain opening in the stern can be used before dismantling the kayak. This way you make sure that most of the water can drain out of the boat. To do this, tilt the boat at the front and the water in the boat will run out of the drain opening. You only have to wipe the interior dry without taking out the water with a sponge. The boat skin can also be wiped dry easily. The seats on the other hand have a slightly fabric-like coating that cannot be wiped dry. These should let air dry.

The air went out of the air chambers without much effort and the boat let was easy to fold up so that it fit back into the bag. However, the folded boat did not reach the original pack size.

intex excursion pro drain valve

Strengths and weaknesses of the Intex

It is difficult to identify a concrete strength of the kayak. For a inflatable kayak in the lower price range it has reasonable dimensions and comes with a lot of useful accessories. Due to its generous dimensions the kayak offers much more space inside than comparable kayaks in the price range. The directional stability and the performance on the water is good for comfortable tours on lakes and rivers.

Nevertheless, from our point of view, the Intex Excursion Pro is a beginner inflatable kayak for occasional use. The air chambers are not stiff enough due to the low air pressure, the backrests do not give enough support when paddling on longer tours and the paddles are too wobbly. The boat skin is much more robust than the Intex Challenger or Explorer. But it does not look as robust as the skin of a Gumotex or Grabner inflatable kayak.

intex excursion pro kayak test

+ easy assembly and dismantling + robust and large carrying bag included + more robust boat skin than other Intex inflatable boats + good driving characteristics (good compromise between speed, manoeuvrability and directional stability) + complete set – also suitable for anglers + enough interior space – very good manometer + useful equipment (e.g. additional D-rings, safety line, handles, seat elevation, …)

Disadvantages

– wobbly kayak paddles – fin holder was not correctly attached for our model – front and rear spray covers offer almost no protection against splash water and smaller waves – no luggage net – low air pressure and therefore soft air chambers- a lot of packaging waste (each part was individually packed in plastic bags) – bulky packing size considering the boat dimensions – foot braces are unsuitable for tall people

Conclusion on the Intex Excursion Pro

The Intex Excursion Pro is a successful further development with numerous improvements of the previous Intex inflatable kayaks and goes in the right direction. We had called the Intex Challenger and Explorer more bathing boats than kayaks. With the Intex Excursion Pro we see it the other way around. But it is definitely not a touring kayak either, it is much more a recreational kayak for occasional use. The running characteristics were better than expected, especially when the kayak is paddled by two persons. Two paddlers give the boat more drive. Also, the higher weight and better weight distribution increases the waterline of the boat. However, our afternoon review cannot conclude how durable and robust the kayak is in the long run.

Recommended Kayaking Equipment

The Intex Challenger Excursion Pro already includes a paddle and pump. However, you definitely need to get a life jacket. You also want to consider a dry bag and a proper transport bag for the inflatable kayak.

Accessories for the Intex Challenger K1

The scope of delivery of the boat includes the following accessories:

  • Kayak paddle
  • Inflatable foot brace
  • Repair patches
  • Transport bag

In addition, we recommend the following accessories:

  • Life jacket: Itiwit BA 50N+ * (good life jacket for beginners, very good price-performance ratio, more details in our test report).
  • Dry Bag: Itiwit dry bag 10L* (ideal for protecting items from splashing water and short immersion in water, good workmanship, with carrying strap, available in different colors and sizes)
  • Transport backpack: only a bag is included, which is intended for storage and short transport of the kayak to the water. If you want to transport the kayak longer distances and more comfortably to the water, we recommend the Itiwit transport backpack*, which is comfortable to carry and has enough space for the kayak and accessories.

Alternatives to the Intex Excursion Pro

There are many other manufacturers, which make also great inflatable kayaks. Sea Eagle for example is very well-known in the US and they have a very wide range of inflatables. The Sea Eagle 420X comes with a drop-stitch floor and is available in a complete set (paddles, air pump, bag). It’s more expensive than the Excursion Pro but you will also get more for your money.

If you look for another affordable kayak, then the Itiwit x100+ might be a good kayak for you as a beginner. It’s a well-designed boat with good materials and quality but due to the hull the driving performance isn’t outstanding. It’s a good leisure boat for slow and comfortable tours on calm waters.

But if performance on the water is important to you, then you should check out kayaks from Advanced Elements. They have some really good boat, which can compete with solid kayaks.

Hey! I’m looking for a kayak to use in the ocean, for calm yet ocean waters. Do you think this kayak is a good option?

Hello Débora,

it’s not primarily designed for sea kayaing. Since the Intex Exploroer Pro doesn’t have any wave/splash water protection, you should only use it on the coast when the water is very calm. Make sure to wear a PFD and to wash the kayak with fresh water after your paddling tour.

Best regards Christian

Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 SS Review

Many anglers are under the mistaken impression that a good kayak must have a four-digit price tag. And while there are certainly a variety of extremely good kayaks available at that price range, there are plenty of worthy options available for much less, like the Sun Dolphin Excursion 10 SS.

A small and lightweight, yet durable craft, the Excursion 10 SS performs and handles like many kayaks at higher price points, and it also comes with a number of the features and storage options that high-end kayaks feature.

excursion kayak

  • The Personal Accessory Carrier allows you to bring along plenty of gear, while still leaving the cargo area open
  • Very light craft that single anglers can move and carry with ease
  • Adjustable foot braces and seat provide a comfortable ride
  • Not well-suited for large or tall anglers
  • Not stable enough to allow anglers to stand
  • A few anglers noted that the storage hatch didn’t fit as snuggly as they’d have liked

Build Quality

The Excursion 10 SS is a US-made vessel, which is built to the same standards that most other kayaks made by Sun Dolphin. Durable, yet lightweight, this 10-foot-long, 30-inch-wide vessel weighs only 44 pounds yet is designed to stand up to the wear and tear of regular use.

Most anglers who tried the Excursion 10 SS praised its durability and reported that the craft felt well-built and sturdy. A few anglers did report that the kayak possesses a few sharp edges, so use care when entering or exiting the craft.

Storage Capacity

The Excursion 10 SS provides a surprising amount of storage space for such a tiny craft. It comes equipped with two flush-mount rod holders, as well as an articulating rod holder in front of the cockpit. The articulating rod holder is offset to the left of the craft, to prevent it from obscuring your view or getting in the way of the paddle holder.

The Excursion 10 SS also features Sun Dolphin’s Personal Accessory Carrier, which can be removed from the craft and towed via a cord. This frees up room in the designated cargo area (the cargo area is equipped with bungee cords to keep your gear secure) and gives you a place to store coolers, bait wells and similar items. The Excursion 10 SS also comes with a hands-free electronics console for your cell phone or another electronic device.

excursion kayak

The Excursion 10 SS is a very comfortable kayak for its size, as it features a roomy cockpit and adjustable foot braces to give you plenty of leg and hip room and allow you to customize the craft to fit your body. However, exceptionally tall anglers may find the cockpit a little snug.

The cockpit is lined with thigh pads, and the craft’s padded seat can be adjusted to ensure you remain comfortable while paddling and fishing. The primary storage area is located at the rear of the vessel, so you’ll have to twist around to access it, but this is only a minor concern for most anglers, and it doesn’t compromise the craft’s comfort significantly.

Although the Excursion 10 SS is not the most stable craft on the water, most anglers found that it was stable enough to allow anglers to paddle and fish with confidence.

It has a relatively light capacity (280 pounds) so large anglers may find that it sits relatively low in the water. You probably won’t find it stable enough for standing, despite its 30-inch-wide beam.

excursion kayak

Maneuverability

Most anglers found that the Excursion 10 SS performs well on the water. Its small size makes it very maneuverable and allows anglers to navigate the crowded area near the shore easily.

And because the craft weighs less than 50 pounds and comes with retractable handles at the bow and stern, it is very easy to maneuver across dry ground, which makes loading and launching a breeze. Yet despite its very lightweight, the craft reportedly tracks very well and does not get blown around by the wind very much.

The Excursion 10 SS is obviously not the best-performing or best-equipped kayak available to anglers, but it is a very high-quality vessel, which is sure to help you catch more fish. It provides plenty of storage space for all of your tackle and equipment, tracks well and provides more stability than many other kayaks of similar size.

It isn’t a great choice for anglers who want to fish in deep, offshore water, and it probably isn’t the best option for exceptionally tall or large anglers, but most of those who are interested in purchasing a first or second kayak should give the Excursion 10 SS a look.

Intex Kayaks in 2023: Full Model Lineup and Reviews

Tom "Moose" Kilpatrick

Intex makes just about every inflatable item you can imagine, from bouncy castles to airbeds and pool floats. With a wealth of knowledge in making things that float, they have a range of sporting goods that includes five kayak models and a host of small boats.

The Intex range includes some of the most popular recreational inflatable kayaks on the market. Their lightweight, sporty kayaks are designed with portability and budget in mind. Intex kayaks might be the perfect first kayak for family adventures, but they also have models that are perfect for exploration or angling.

Here is our rundown of the 2023 Intex kayaks.

As an affiliate of Amazon and other retailers, we may earn a small commission when you buy via our links, at no additional cost to you. Thank you!

Comparison Table: Intex Kayaks

Intex challenger k1.

Intex Challenger K1

Length: 9 ft. / 274 cm Width: 30 in. / 76 cm Weight: 28 lbs. / 12.7 kg Capacity: 220 lbs. / 100 kg

Intex Challenger K1 is one of the most portable and affordable inflatable kayaks on the market. The package it comes in measures 23 in. (58 cm) x 16 in. (40 cm) and includes the kayak, paddle, skeg, and pump. You’ll be hard pushed to find a package better suited to throwing in the trunk, or RV for a weekend of camping. The even better news is that the Challenger is useable by both adults and children.

Intex Challenger is made from lightweight vinyl, which is the reason this kayak packs down so small and lightweight compared with PVC alternatives. Though comparatively light, vinyl isn’t quite as durable, so if you plan to use this kayak on rivers, around rough banks, or near overhanging trees, you should take care not to end up deflated.

Once you reach the water, inflation is quick and easy. The Boston valves fitted in the floor and the sidewalls allow you to get both chambers of this kayak up to pressure before you set off on the water. The seat inflates separately and attaches to the kayak with a velcro strip and a series of D-rings that keep it securely in place so it won’t move while you paddle.

The inflatable seat itself is unusually supportive and comfortable for an inflatable system. Inside the kayak, there’s plenty of legroom for kayakers of most sizes.

For a lightweight and low-budget inflatable kayak, the Challenger paddles surprisingly well. The skeg at the rear helps this kayak to track and, while we wouldn’t recommend getting caught out in strong winds, you will find it easy to go in a straight line on open water and gentle rivers.

As a short and wide kayak, Intex Challenger isn’t going to break any records, but it’s not designed to. It will be really easy for the whole family to paddle though, with low sidewalls and accessible design. Often that’s more important.

Intex Challenger K2

Intex Challenger K2

Length: 11 ft. 6 in. / 350 cm Width: 30 in. / 76 cm Weight: 38 lbs. / 17.2 kg Capacity: 400 lbs. / 181 kg

Made from the same lightweight vinyl material as the Challenger K1, the Intex Challenger K2 tandem kayak is equally popular for its price point and ease of use. Though it’s not quite as lightweight as the K1 model, this 38 lb. kayak is accessible enough to move to and from the water. If you’re going any distance we would recommend a carrying backpack system.

This compact two-person kayak inflates through two Boston valves, one on the floor and one on the sidewalls. Intex has included a measuring scale on the sidewalls, and once this is stretched to the recommended 10 cm, the kayak is fully inflated. This prevents you from over-inflating your kayak and risking damage, or underinflating and suffering poor performance.

Also included in the bag are two inflatable seats and a footrest, a removable skeg, collapsible paddles, and a hand pump. The seats inflate as an air mattress, by mouth, and this can be tricky to get used to without losing any pressure while you close the tab. Once inflated, the seats are attached using a strip of velcro in the center and straps on the sides. The rear strip is longer, giving you more scope to adjust your position in the kayak, either for more legroom or more cargo space behind you.

The footrest is an inflatable block that fits into the front of the kayak once everything is inflated. Not only does this give the front paddler something to rest their feet on, but it also reinforces the structure of the kayak too.

The vinyl construction keeps the Challenger K2 lightweight and affordable, but compared to other inflatable kayaks , it does lack some durability. When it comes to launching and landing the K2, you will need to be in at least ankle-deep water, to avoid roughing the kayak up against rocks or the shoreline. While on the water, you should avoid overhanging trees and subsurface rocks where possible.

Intex Challenger K2 is an accessible tandem inflatable kayak that makes it easy for beginners to take to the water. It is also a great way for experienced kayakers to get out on camping or RV holidays. The cockpit is spacious and the seats are comfortable and supportive for an inflatable kayak. The lower pressure of this kayak makes it slightly twitchy if you put the power on, but the closed-cockpit style and sporty profile make it suited to a whole range of recreational kayakers.

Intex Explorer K2

Intex Explorer K2

Length: 10 ft. 3 in. / 312 cm Width: 36 in. / 91 cm Weight: 36.7 lbs. / 17 kg Capacity: 400 lbs. / 181 kg

Intex Explorer K2 is among the best-selling inflatable kayaks on the market. The open cockpit design makes this kayak easy to access and family-friendly, perfect for those long summer days down by the lake, or on your next camping trip.

The Explorer K2 comes in a lightweight transport bag, along with the seats, two paddles, a pump, and a skeg. However, if you plan to carry this kayak further than the distance from your car to the water’s edge, you will most likely want to transfer it into a more substantial pack.

Inflating the Explorer K2 takes less than ten minutes. Intex has printed a scale on the sidewalls that shows when the kayak is fully inflated. Once the printed line measures 10 cm, the Explorer is fully inflated and ready to go.

The floor and sidewalls inflate separately and the sidewalls are divided into two chambers. This may give you a little extra work when inflating the Explorer, but is a crucial safety feature. If you find yourself out on the water and one of your sidewalls gets punctured, you still have one sidewall and an inflated floor to keep you afloat, rather than having the entire kayak deflate underneath you. The vinyl construction should mean that punctures are unlikely, but you should take care not to launch and land on rough beaches or sharp rocks, and avoid trees at the water’s edge.

The detachable skeg system on the underside of the Explorer makes a huge difference to this otherwise flat hulled design, giving it some tracking stability and generally improving its directional abilities. As with most inflatable kayaks, this kayak isn’t designed for quick changes of course but can be easily controlled by the rear paddler while the front paddler maintains a reasonable pace. Although not a racing kayak by any means, this little boat is fast enough to justify its name, the Explorer.

The high sidewalls don’t inflate to particularly high pressure. While this makes the kayak one of the more comfortable options on the market, it does mean that smaller paddlers can find themselves struggling to reach the water or knocking their arms on the sides.

The seats are surprisingly comfortable for an inflatable kayak, with supportive straps keeping them upright, but they aren’t likely to keep you out on the water all day without regular breaks.

Intex Excursion Pro K1

Intex Excursion Pro K1

Length: 10 ft. / 304 cm Width: 36 in. / 91 cm Weight: 37.3 lbs. / 17 kg Capacity: 220 lbs. / 100 kg

If you’re heading out for a long day on the water, you want a kayak that is built to withstand all that you can throw at it. What’s more, you want a kayak that is not only easy to paddle but versatile in its uses and easy to transport.

Intex Excursion Pro K1 is a recreational kayak that ticks all these boxes, with features that make it suited to days out on the water and occasional kayak angling.

The kayak itself is made from durable, heavy-duty vinyl and makes use of a 3-ply construction with PVC that is designed to withstand the elements, including saltwater. This heavier duty design does limit the Excursion Pro’s portability, but means you get a far more durable kayak.

The durable build and reinforced seams allow the Excursion to inflate to a higher pressure than other Intex models. This makes the kayak feel more like a traditional, rigid kayak that’s quicker over the water and more maneuverable. Two skegs of different lengths are included to assist in tracking. The short skeg can be fitted in shallow water, while on longer trips in deep water, the long skeg is more effective.

As the Excursion Pro is designed to be an all-around recreational kayak, it has a wealth of features to enhance your time on the water. With a removable Go-Pro or phone mount at the front of the kayak, you can record and photograph your journey with ease. The rest of your essentials can be kept safe and dry in the included waterproof bag, which stows neatly under the front spray skirt.

Just behind the seat, there are two removable rod holders, allowing the angling enthusiast to make the most of their inflatable kayak. Anglers will appreciate the extra inflatable seating pad that can be used to raise the seat, giving them a better casting height. This feature is also great for smaller kayakers who benefit from the extra reach.

The inflatable seat is fitted on a velcro strip and supported by two adjustable straps. A floor-mounted footrest keeps you supported in the seat and a strong paddling position. Also included in the bag are a collapsible paddle and a hand pump.

Intex Excursion Pro K2

Intex Excursion Pro K2

Length: 12 ft. 7 in. / 384 cm Width: 36 in. / 91 cm Weight: 46.7 lbs. / 21 kg Capacity: 400 lbs. / 181 kg

Everything you need to get two people out in one lightweight, easy package. Intex Excursion Pro 2 is a hardwearing, refined inflatable kayak that is built to withstand whatever the recreational kayaker can throw its way. The lightweight, adaptable design makes this the ideal companion for your next overnight camping trip or holiday exploring in the RV.

The comfortable inflatable seats are reasonably supportive, fitted on velcro strips and attached with adjustable straps that clip to strong D-rings. Floor mounted footrests for each paddler are adjustable, as are the seating positions, allowing paddlers of different heights to get comfortable. Extra inflatable seating pads are included to raise either seat, which is particularly useful for anglers or smaller kayakers.

In addition to the adjustable footrests, Intex Excursion Pro 2 is fitted with removable rod holders and a mount point near the bow. This is suitable for carrying a Go-Pro or phone to record your trip, or a fish-finder or adjustable rod holder on a fishing trip.

The Excursion Pro 2 uses 3-ply, heavy-duty laminate material with a polyester core. This means that if you launch and land on beaches, or find yourself bumping along the shoreline or into trees, you won’t have to worry about puncturing your kayak. In the unlikely event of a puncture, the three-chamber design means that you won’t find the whole kayak deflating underneath you and you can safely get back to shore.

Like most inflatable kayaks, Intex Excursion Pro 2 does suffer from a lack of keel line. Intex has countered this with the inclusion of two skegs. The shorter skeg is suited to shallower water, like your local lake or a fishing trip, while the deeper skeg gives you better tracking and speed on longer trips. Intex has also included two collapsible aluminum paddles, a hand pump, and a repair kit in the bag.

Final Thoughts: Are Intex Kayaks Worth It?

Intex kayaks get some mixed reviews. Some users are super happy with their Intex while others prefer to stay away from them.

So should you buy an Intex kayak?

As always, it depends.

It’s not without reason that Intex kayaks are the most popular inflatable kayaks on the market. They are lightweight, affordable, and quite versatile for recreational inflatables.

If you’re looking for a high-spec kayak for long tours, whitewater trips, or dedicated angling sessions, then we would recommend you seek out other inflatable kayak brands.

But if you want an affordable inflatable kayak that is perfect for throwing in your car or RV for your next camping trip, or if you want to try kayaking without spending too much, Intex has a kayak for you.

Trip information

Why choose us.

Fin Expeditions takes pride in following established best practices of Ethical Ecotourism.

SMALL GROUP SIZE

We want our kayak tours to have a more intimate experience for every guest.  Large groups disrupt wildlife habitats and require loud guide communication and a less personalized approach.  Other kayak tour agencies put 40 or more people in a group. We typically limit the size of our tours to 12 guests .

TRAINED GUIDES

At Fin Expeditions our guides are highly trained. Other kayak tour agencies may give their guides as little as 2 hours of training. Our guides receive 50+ hours of training before they are certified to lead a tour.

LOCALLY OWNED

Fin Expeditions is locally owned and our tours are run by local guides that are knowledgeable, friendly and know the area inside and out. We support our local community and efforts to conserve and restore the Indian River Lagoon.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

We are top-rated on Tripadvisor and Google for a reason. We know what it’s like to travel and do what we can to take some of that load off our guests. Just show up and we’ll take care of the details .

BETTER EQUIPMENT

We believe by fully equipping our guests, we provide an upscale experience. We use high-end kayaks with high-back seats for your comfort. We clean and sanitize all equipment and life jackets after each use.
