Star trek picard season 3: release date, trailers, and where to stream.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming third season of Picard.

Patrick Stewart got to step back into one of his most iconic roles in 2020, with the release of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access (now Paramount+ ). Now, the second season is complete, and Paramount has already announced the cast, a release date, and even an official trailer for season three. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season three of Picard.

Picard season 3: What to expect

The first season of Star Trek: Picard dealt with two events that were actually holdovers from different Star Trek films in the past: Data's death in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (Picard struggles with this throughout the first season), and the destruction of Romulus in 2009's Star Trek (which was used to introduce the synthetic humans that helped prevent the rescue of Romulan refugees and ultimately set the stage for Picard to resign from Star Fleet). The synths are subject to a ban, and Picard is pushed to help them because of two synthetic twins that are related to his old friend Data.

Spoiler alert: This all culminates in Picard finding the home of Data's original creator and himself becoming a synthetic at the end of season one to prevent his own death.

This brings us to where we last left Picard - blasting off on the ship La Sirena with a new makeshift crew, heading toward whatever new adventure awaits. The second season starts with Picard transported to the year 2024 along with some of his old friends from Star Trek: The Next Generation series (such as Jerri Ryan’s Seven of Nine and Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker). Picard and friends must discover what the omnipotent Q (John De Lancie) has done to change the timeline that has created a xenophobic version of Starfleet - the Confederation of Earth - which is out to destroy all aliens.

The first teaser for season three sees him rummaging through his old Star Trek: The Next Generation gear, and then we see him and his old partner Riker (Jonathan Frakes), standing side by side, pointing phasers at someone. The teaser also promises more returning characters in season three such as Brent Spinner as Data and Levar Burton as Geordi La Forge. The official trailer for season three is also vague on plot details, but it does show a new ship: The USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker. We also see Dr. Crusher fighting off masked enemies with a rifle, and a Federation building exploding.

Picard season 3: Release date

  • Star Trek: Picard season three release date - 16 February 2023

A release date for Star Trek: Picard season three is set for 16 February 2023.

Keep in mind the production and filming of seasons two and three all began simultaneously in 2020. The second season of Star Trek: Picard premiered in March 2022 - two years after season one ended - while season three is releasing in early 2023.  Jonathan Frakes and Terry Matalas are directing the final season, with 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas stepping in as showrunner for the season.

Picard season 3: Cast and crew

LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner have been announced by Paramount to join Patrick Stewart in the cast of Star Trek: Picard season three.

For reference, below is the confirmed cast for season two of Picard:

Picard season 3: Where to stream

The third season isn't yet available. Below is where you'll likely be able to stream it when it does release.

The second season of Picard took Discovery's Thursday timeslot on Paramount+ . It premiered in March 2022 and is still airing. The third season hasn't yet premiered but will obviously be a Paramount+ exclusive.

Amazon Prime Video is Picard's home in the UK, with new episodes airing a day later starting on 4 March 2022. One has to assume season three will also come to Prime Video in the UK, but it's not confirmed.

In Canada, season two is available on Crave. We suspect season three will also be available via Crave once it premieres in early 2023.

Picard season 3: Trailers

One official trailer is available for the new season -- below. It shows Patrick Stewart back for a final adventure, paired with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation. We see LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirti'’ Deanna Troi. Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

Two other teaser trailers have been released for the third season. You can watch them both below, to get a look at a few returning cast members from The Next Generation.

The trailer above debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, while the one below came out a little earlier in 2022.

Both confirm that we're going to see some familiar faces in the last season of Picard.

Picard season 3: How to catch up

In order to be fully prepared to watch season three, you really should watch seasons one and two. You can stream them on Paramount+.

Picard season 3: Release date, teaser trailers, cast and everything we know so far

The latest Picard season 3 teaser trailer previews the whole gang getting back together

Image of Patrick Stewart as Picard in Picard season 3

The “Next Generation” crew is back. A new Star Trek: Picard season 3 teaser that just dropped for Star Trek Day (months after the first teaser and poster were revealed at the San-Diego Comic-Con) remind us how many of the returning crew members from Star Trek: The Next Generation are returning.

Cast members Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden came together on stage to promote the third and final season of Picard that is set to premiere on Paramount Plus very soon. So soon, in fact, that we have all the details on how to watch Picard season 3 online .

Alex Kurtzman, the series’ Executive Producer, said Picard will have to set off to find and reunite his old crew who are spread out across the galaxy in this season. Without revealing much about the main villain in the third installment, he said, “I won’t say much except to say that she’s amazing.”

Here’s everything we know about Picard season 3 so far.

Picard season 3 release date confirmed

Star Trek: Picard season 3 will premiere on Paramount Plus on February 16, 2023, as revealed in the below video.

Picard season 3 teaser trailers and posters

The latest Picard season 3 teaser trailer shows Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) sending out a beacon for help from Jean-Luc Picard. Soon, old allies alll come to Picard's help, including Riker himself.  And they all get aboard the Titan, for the final adventure of this series. It even looks like Picard is ready to not be the one who says "engage."

Paramount Plus showcased many of their Star Trek series including the upcoming Star Trek: Picard season 3 at the San Diego Comic-con. They released a trailer and posters of the final season which gives Trekkies a glimpse of what to expect and highlights some quotes from the crew. You can watch the teaser below.

The teaser features the remaining cast of Picard, alongside Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Some of the TNG characters who have not yet appeared on Picard include Geordi, Worf and Dr. Crusher. The teaser gives us some details on them — like Geordi, who appears to be in an admiral’s Starfleet uniform, while Worf looks like he’s wearing the captain’s rank insignia. Dr. Crusher is out of uniform though.

 Picard season 3 cast news

The trailer and posters give us a glimpse of the cast and characters that will return to Picard in the final season. This includes the titular Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard), LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), and Jonathan Frakes (William Riker).

They are also joined by fellow Picard co-stars including Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) and Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker). This is the first time all of the central TNG characters would have performed together since the 2002 feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis.”

Brent Spiner — who appeared consistently through Picard season 2 and played the android Data on The Next Generation and plays Data’s human brother Alan Inigo Soong on Picard — will also be seen in season 3.

Cast of Picard season 3

Picard season 3: Everything else we know

Season 3 of Picard will probably feature a villain that takes inspiration from the "mind games between Kirk and Khan" in Wrath of Khan. This final season will also possibly deal with Picard facing trauma he underwent as a child — that he's been trying to run away from his entire life.

Season 2 finale of Picard also featured Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) who surprisingly entered mid episode to get Kore (Isa Briones) to join the Travelers. But so far by the looks of it, Briones is not in season 3, so it's unclear if the series will follow-up on this plot line.

At the Comic-con Patrick Stewart also teased that he will indeed set foot on the Enterprise-D at least once in Season 3.

Ah… it feels just like old times in a new sneak peek at Star Trek: Picard ‘s final season.

Paramount+ unveiled a new teaser for the upcoming third and final season, along with a premiere date: Season 3 will debut Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, with new episodes airing weekly. The announcements were made by series star Patrick Stewart himself at the annual “Star Trek Day” celebration on Thursday.

In the teaser, Jean-Luc gets a distress call from his old flame Dr. Beverly Crusher: “We need your help.” We see what looks like Starfleet headquarters crumbling into rubble (!) as Jean-Luc consults with his former right-hand man Will Riker. Jean-Luc doesn’t want to ask his old friends to put themselves in danger (“Since when?” Riker laughs), but his Enterprise crewmates Geordi La Forge, Worf, Crusher and Troi all assemble as Riker tells him: “Wherever you go, we go.”

They get a lift from Seven of Nine aboard the gleaming new starship the U.S.S. Titan — and they all zip off together to tackle their final mission. As first announced back in April , Next Generation alums LeVar Burton (Geordi), Michael Dorn (Worf) and Gates McFadden (Crusher) are joining the cast of Picard ‘s final season, with Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis also returning as Riker and Troi, following their Season 1 appearance.

I cannot wait for this.

Yes, please.

So they went with a new design on the Titan? I remember they had a design contest with the books for what the Titan would look like. Guess since they’re ignoring the books, might as well ignore that as well.

Lower Decks used the Luna Class Titan Design, so Probably a Titan-A situation. (maybe)

I would hope that’s the case.

I didn’t love the first two seasons, but I am exited for this.

Freakin’ goosebumps!!!

Make it so! YES!

I really hope we get to see them all together rather than one here and one there without any interaction. I know there were Covid protocols in place during filming, so those rules better not ruin it for the fans.

Your heart’s in the right place but boy did that sound entitled.

But what about Elnor and Rafi?

Raffi appears in the trailer at the 40-second mark.

Also, the only way they can really end this show is with Jean-Luc dying. Right?

It’s Sci-Fi, maybe he’ll bee digitally downloaded where no man has gone before…

Well he already died he’s an android now soo…..

Picard died already.

The producers stated months ago that the series is left open enough that if Patrick Stewart wants they can do more seasons.

I am so glad they kept Seven… I feared she was just a short term guest.

If they’re smart, after “Picard” ends in S3, they’ll keep a Modern Trek show going with Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and possibly others, maybe Some Voyager/DS9 cast show up along the way.

Gdang it…Paramount is gonna make me pay just to watch this! LOL I got chills and I’m so excited!!

Boldly going where no one has gone before is... fine. But boldly going where we’ve all been before might not be so bad either. That’s the big gamble of Star Trek: Picard season 3, which not only brings Patrick Stewart’s Trek captain back for a final adventure, but pairs him with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The trailer for the nostalgia-heavy season 3, which will arrive next February, debuted during Paramount Plus’ “Star Trek Day” livestream, and gave us new looks at LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden’s Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi. Next Gen and Picard alum Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd. 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas steps in as showrunner for the season, which will also be the series’ last.

The trailer for Picard season 3 is vague on plot details, but does reveal the captain and his crew’s new ride: the USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker, a starship with serious Enterprise vibes. We also see Dr. Crusher holding off some masked foes with a rifle, and a Federation building imploding — things remain not good in the utopian future!

What’s going on and why Picard needs to call his work fam for help will become clear when Star Trek: Picard season 3 premieres on Paramount Plus on Feb. 16, 2023.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 release date

During the Star Trek Day event, Patrick Stewart revealed that Star Trek: Picard season 3 would be beaming onto Paramount Plus on February 16, 2023.

Great news for UK Trekkies: you can watch the new season on Paramount Plus.

Who is in the Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast?

As soon as Picard was initially announced, Star Trek fans wondered whether it would present an opportunity for the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast to reunite. Brent Spiner returned as Altan Soong and Adam Soong, along with reprising his role as Data.

In season 3, the entire Star Trek: The Next Generation cast is back together again in a reunion for the ages.

There was a bit of controversy when Wil Wheaton wasn’t announced as part of the TNG reunion. Wheaton, who played Dr. Crusher’s son Wesley Crusher, was a big part of the series in its early seasons. Wheaton currently hosts the Ready Room aftershow and remained mum about being left out until the Picard season 2 finale revealed that Wesley was back in his role as the Traveler, picking up where his character left off in his final TNG appearance.

Here is the Picard season 3 cast so far:

  • Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard
  • Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine
  • Michelle Hurd as Raffi
  • Jonathan Frakes as William T. Riker
  • Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher
  • Michael Dorn as Worf
  • LeVar Burton as Geordi LaForge
  • Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi
  • Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher

What is Star Trek: Picard season 3 about?

There’s no official synopsis for Star Trek: Picard season 3 just yet, but it’s safe to say that the events of Star Trek: Picard season 2 will trickle down into the final season. In season 2, Star Trek villain Q (John De Lancie) returned to wreak havoc with the timeline.

Based on what’s revealed in the sneak peek teaser, Beverly Crusher sends a message to Picard asking for help. Picard goes to Riker and they devise a plan to find a ship and go on their new mission to help their friends.

It's possible we'll learn more about the new season when several members of the cast, including Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner travel to NYCC to celebrate the final season. Deadline reports that the entire TNG cast, minus Wil Wheaton, will be together for this special occasion.

Is there a Star Trek: Picard season 3 trailer?

The latest look at Star Trek: Picard season 3 aired during the AFC Championship game. Give it a look below.

The first official sneak peek for Star Trek: Picard season 3 was introduced by Patrick Stewart during the Picard panel at Star Trek Day. Seeing the entire TNG cast makes us emotional. Not only that, but newly minted Starfleet officer Seven of Nine utters Picard’s iconic "engage" command to the delight of fans everywhere.

Picard Season 3 Looks Borg-eous

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Well, this is an Enterprise -ing development: The trailer for season three of Star Trek: Picard was just released, and boy does it have stakes. I mean, “There’s a darkness, an all-consuming darkness” and “Jean-Luc, trust no one” are both said within one minute of the trailer beginning. Some shady stuff is going down. Luckily, we’ve got a crew that can handle it with many of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast joining Patrick Stewart as Picard for the final season of the show. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner will all be present, plus Ed Speleers ( Outlander ) and Todd Stashwick ( Riches ) will have regular and recurring roles, respectively. LeVar Burton may not be on Jeopardy! , but it sounds like he is “in jeopardy.” Live long enough for the premiere February 16 on Paramount+ with new episodes streaming weekly.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3: Release Date And Other Things We Know About The Series

Here's what we know about the final season.

Jean-Luc Picard in Picard on Paramount+

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will be the final season of the Paramount+ series, and a farewell to one of the franchise’s greatest characters. Fans are no doubt excited to see Patrick Stewart ’s curtain call in his series, and while we’re still in the dark on some details about this final season, there are some details we have learned ahead of its release.

Below are a lot of key things Star Trek fans will be interested in if they’re hoping to check out Picard Season 3. The below will likely convince many to hang onto those Paramount+ subscriptions for its premiere, assuming they weren’t planning to already.

Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Season 3 Premieres In February And Will Be Ten Episodes Long

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard will arrive on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16, 2023.

Star Trek: Picard Season 1 and 2 were both ten episodes in length, and the series will continue that trend for the final season, with episodes arriving weekly (on Thursday) following the Season 3 premiere. This isn’t anything unusual really, as all modern Trek shows have resorted to the “less is more” strategy when it comes to modern seasons. While this will likely mean the odds of a modern Trek series exceeding one-hundred episodes are slim, more money is spent on visual effects, and serialized stories stay on task when telling their tales.

Jonathan Frakes as Riker in Star Trek: Picard

Many Cast Members Of The Next Generation Are Returning

One of the most exciting things about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is that Patrick Stewart will finally deliver on his promise of reuniting with most of the cast of The Next Generation . Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes , Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton , Brent Spiner , and Michael Dorn are back together again for an adventure that should be a send-off for the iconic cast. Obviously, this also presents an opportunity for the series to answer some major questions that TNG never did, but it remains to be seen how much of that will be happening.

Evan Evagora as Elnor in Star Trek: Picard

Previous Characters From Seasons 1 And 2 Won’t Return

While Star Trek: Picard will add a lot of stars from The Next Generation to its final season, it’s coming at the cost of much of the cast who appeared in Seasons 1 and 2. Allison Pill, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, and Orla Brady won’t be around in this new adventure . Even Wil Wheaton, who had a surprise cameo as Wesley Crusher , won’t be around in the final season. It’s a bit of a bummer, but with only so much time to tell the story, it’s understandable why the series cleared the way for the TNG cast.

Amanda Plummer in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

The First Trailer Revealed Amanda Plummer Is Playing The Main Villain

Star Trek: Picard has tapped Amanda Plummer for its main villain for Season 3 and there’s an interesting history there. Before we get into that, check out Plummer below, in a trailer that shows she'll be a formidable foe for Picard and friends:

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

For those unaware Amanda Plummer’s father, Christopher Plummer played a villain in the final Star Trek movie with the original series cast, The Undiscovered Country . Now, his daughter will play the villain in what’s believed to be the final adventure for The Next Generation crew. Not much is known about her character, Captain Vadic, but the brief footage we’ve seen of her seems to indicate she’s a worthy adversary to Picard and his crew. Hopefully, she’s not too formidable, though, as I’d hate to see this final get-together end on a sour note.

Worf on Star Trek: Picard

Worf Is A Pacifist

During Star Trek: The Next Generation , Worf always sought to honor his Klingon heritage and even instill those values in his son. So then, it was quite a surprise to learn in the above trailer for Picard Season 3 that Worf prefers pacifism to combat. One may use many adjectives to describe Klingons, but pacifist is about the furthest from what anyone would say about them. Hell, even those Klingon monks tried to have Captain Pike killed, so I’m definitely invested in this storyline and what led to Worf’s big decision.

Jeri Ryan in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Seven Of Nine Is Officially In Starfleet, And Could Possibly Link Up With Janeway

Star Trek: Picard has long established that Seven of Nine joined up with the Fenris Rangers, but what we didn’t learn until Season 2 was that she was rejected entry into Starfleet. Despite her years of service on the Voyager with Captain Janeway,  Starfleet didn’t accept the Borg into its ranks, but we’ve since learned that Admiral Picard changed that in Season 3. It’s confirmed that Seven of Nine will be an official Starfleet officer , though not quite a captain, unfortunately. Maybe that’s something that will happen by the end of the season?

Another interesting tidbit is that there's a possibility we might see Kate Mulgrew reprise her role as Janeway in live-action, considering her ties to Seven. While nothing is confirmed, Alex Kurtzman did reveal there were discussions about bringing Mulgrew back as Janeway to live-action, and a recent Picard tie-in comic showed Seven talking with her mentor. We can't say we know for certain whether or not Mulgrew will appear, but there appears to be some compelling evidence suggesting she could cameo.

Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard

Fans Will Get “Emotionally Naked” Scenes Between Jean-Luc And Beverly

Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher are the biggest “what if” couple of Star Trek . The Next Generation flirted with the idea of them getting together throughout its run, but the complicated dynamics of their relationship always got in the way of things. Picard Season 3 presents an opportunity for the two to revisit their relationship. Patrick Stewart mentioned in an interview with Den of Geek that he felt he and co-star Gates McFadden’s characters had some of their most “ emotionally naked ” scenes to date, which seems to indicate there will be some talk about a romance that will be, or even once was.

Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: Picard

Geordi Received A Promotion, And We’ll Meet His Daughters

Geordi LaForge is finally getting his due in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, as we learned in a character reveal trailer ahead of the season that he’ll have the rank of Commodore in Starfleet. Geordi noted in one trailer that his time in Starfleet made him a better father, a better friend, and a better man. Fans will get to see the product of LaForge being a better father as his daughters will appear in Season 3 as well. I, for one, am absolutely thrilled to see the “next generation” of the LaForge family in action, especially since LeVar Burton’s actual daughter Mica will portray his daughter Alandra.

Brent Spiner as Lore in Star Trek: Picard

Classic TNG Villains Will Appear

Star Trek: Picard ’s Season 3 trailer shocked fans with the re-emergence of two very popular villains who will appear in the final adventure with Picard and crew. Actor Daniel Davis will reprise his role as Moriarty who first appeared during The Next Generation . As for Brent Spiner, with Data dead, he’ll don the role of his evil brother Lore, who was also believed to be dead. Personally, I’ve wondered if Lore might find redemption in Picard Season 3 , but we’ll just have to wait and watch the season to see if that ends up happening.

Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16th. Tune in then and on the following Thursdays for what should be a great adventure, and hopefully, a proper farewell to the crew of The Next Generation .

Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation have been patiently waiting for the return of their favorite characters since the first season of Star Trek: Picard . It seems the promise (real or imagined) of finding out what happened to characters such as Beverly Crusher and Geordi La Forge has finally been realized. This time it seems that the old favorites are back and hopefully this time around they will be more than just some fan-service cameos.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will release on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16, 2023. This release date is an exclusive date for the residents of the United States. All ten episodes will be released weekly on Paramount+ without any scheduled disruptions. As of the time of this writing, there has been no official announcement on when or where the series will be released internationally. If Paramount+ continues its usual pattern there will be a day lag before it releases on Paramount+ in other countries and on companion streaming services such as Crave in Canada or Amazon Prime Video in the United Kingdom.

The first teaser trailer has been released in celebration of Star Trek Day. The trailer is a short one-minute trailer, but it contains some exciting tidbits for the show to come. The excitement is the fact that our favorite crew members are back. We get our first looks at Geordi, Worf, and Beverly but not so much about the plot. The main theme is that whenever you have a united crew, hope still survives.

An additional sneak peek was released revealing the names of the cast for the upcoming season. This sneak peek shows Picard looking through his old uniforms before suiting up beside Number One for one last “good old-fashioned road trip.” The question is where are they headed on this road trip?

The next trailer was a hefty two-minute and thirty-four-second teaser trailer that confirmed the presence of Lore, Vadic, and other long-term enemies of Picard's former crew. It seems like the villains of the Star Trek: The Next Generation series are coming together to form their own 'injustice league' against the now-reunited crew.

This was followed by a sneak peek into one of every Star Trek fan's greatest moments, the ship reveal. As of now, Seven of Nine is the commander of the USS Titan , one of the most powerful ships in all of Star Trek canon. This looks shows the old crew honoring their bond to Jean-Luc and coming together for one last adventure into the great unknown.

More recently, in an episode of The Ready Room , an aftershow for the whole Star Trek franchise hosted by Wil Wheaton , Paramount released a new clip from Season 3 . Here's the full episode (you can jump to 28:50 to directly watch the clip) and for international viewers, the same is available on the Star Trek website :

So far what we know of season 3 mostly revolves around the cast, and it is as much of an all-star Star Trek cast as could be asked for. We have veterans of Star Trek: Voyager , Star Trek: The Next Generation, and even returning characters from Star Trek: Picard. Sir Patrick Stewart will return as Jean Luc Picard, Michelle Hurd returns as Raffi Musiker, and Jeri Ryan will return as Seven of Nine. Star Trek: Picard veterans Alison Pill (Agnes Jurati), Santiago Cabrera (Cristobal Rios), and Isa Briones (Soji) will not be returning. This makes a distinct step away from some characters built up in the previous two seasons and a step backward in time.

This step backward in time takes Star Trek fans almost 20 years into the past, back almost to the cast of Star Trek: Nemesis . We this the crew of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) is back. Both Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis are coming back as William T. Riker and Deanna Troi. From there on out we have the confirmed return of new old faces such as Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher, Michael Dorn as Worf, LeVar Burton as Geordi LaForge, and even Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher. These are only the confirmed returns, and more have been rumored or wished upon.

Actress Denise Crosby has teased the return of Tasha Yar, the ill-fated security office in the first season of The Next Generation. She also has played the villain Sela, who was in both The Next Generation and Star Trek Online. We don’t know how she will be returning, but Crosby said that “You will see Tasha Yar, but I'm not going to tell you how.” Fans are also hoping that Colm Meaney will return as the veteran Miles O'Brien and give the fans of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine some well-deserved recognition.

No official synopsis has been released to describe the upcoming season, but a few tidbits can be gleaned from the array of cast statements and sneak pieces as well as other parts of the continuity. There is supposed to be an entirely new (or perhaps best described as unknown) villain for season three. Some speculation was that Sela will be one of the primary villains. She was quite potent in her few Next Generation appearances and the games have entire lore built up with Sela as one of the primary antagonists. This is still just conjectured at the moment, however.

What is sure however are the events of the previous seasons (that's your last spoiler warning). In the first season, we came to know Soji as Data’s daughter and how the destruction of Romulus started a chain of events that ultimately caused the outlawing of all synthetic life. Picard found himself in the middle of that interdimensional kerfuffle and died in the process. Now Picard has a synthetic body and his old nemeses Q (played by John De Lancie ) and the Borg Queen (played by Annie Wersching ) returned. After a fun jaunt through time back to the 21st century, we see Picard come to terms with his past and how he came to be who he is. Dr. Jurati also joined with the Borg Queen and created a collective that is friendly to the Federation, once again uniting with Picard in the present. This leaves Picard missing a few key allies. Either way, we have seen some progress. Seven of Nine has returned a Starfleet uniform and Picard seems to be well again. It seems he is going back to his own crew’s roots.

Producers Rod Roddenberry and Alex Kurtzman are returning for the final season as well as writer and producer Terry Matalas .

Simply put there isn’t a future for Picard . This is the final season for Picard and there have not been any spin-offs announced. Between the aging of the actors and the large amount of content we already have in that period, this seems to be the last time we will see a lot of these characters.

When will Star Trek: Picard Season 3 premiere? Release updates and cast details for the Paramount+ series

Jean-Luc Picard is set for one last warp with the old gang. Here’s what to expect.

star trek picard season 3 release date

As Picard Season 2 closes the door on the past, some of Jean-Luc’s friends won’t be returning for the next adventure. Star Trek: Picard Season 2’s ending doesn’t lead directly into Season 3, but we do know that Season 3 is coming towards us at warp speed.

Here’s everything to know about Star Trek: Picard Season 3, including the possible release date, who’s in the cast, and what it could be about. Spoilers ahead for Picard Season 2.

Star Trek Picard

The motley crew of Picard breaks up.

How did Picard Season 2 end?

Although the Picard Season 2 finale, “Farwell,” might seem low-key, it’s huge insofar as two major characters were written out of the show, and a longtime Next Generation favorite was killed off.

After ensuring the successful launch of the Europa Mission , Picard and the La Sirena gang have to figure out how to get back to the year 2401. Luckily, it turns out Q (John de Lancie) wants to be nice, and as his last act before dying he zaps them all back to a slightly altered version of the present. To be clear Q — a space god — is now dead .

Here we learned that the mysterious hooded Borg Queen from Episode 1, “The Star Gazer,” is actually Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), aged 400 years and in control of a more benevolent Borg who are trying to prevent some kind of explosive galactic phenomenon from destroying several planets.

Rios (Santiago Cabrera) remains behind in the 21st century, and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) later tells Picard that Rios died sometime in the past while fighting for medical supplies. The finale then ends with Picard reconnecting with Laris (Orla Brady) and convincing her not to leave him, rekindling their relationship. Most storylines from Season 2 are resolved by the end of its finale, which creates several questions about what Season 3 will be about.

Star Trek Picard

Will Seven become a Starfleet captain in Season 3?

What is the plot of Picard Season 3?

The new Borg Queen mentions that some kind of strange new transwarp conduit is part of a bigger “puzzle,” so it’s a decent bet that something will emerge from it in Picard Season 3.

Beyond that guess, there are just two things we know for sure about Picard Season 3: The entire main cast from The Next Generation will return and, according to co-showrunner Terry Matalas, it will be a “high-stakes, starship-bound adventure.”

It’s also possible that Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) could finally become a member of Starfleet. In the Season 2 finale Picard gives her a “field commission,” and she effectively takes command of the USS Stargazer . Will Seven be in charge of the Stargazer in Season 3? In Episode 9, “Hide and Seek,” Raffi suggests Seven should have been a captain, had Starfleet let her join. Now that Picard has effectively put Seven into Starfleet, it’s possible she’ll still be there in Season 3.

Star Trek Picard

The entire cast of The Next Generation is back for Picard Season 3.

Who stars in Picard Season 3?

The real question is: who isn’t returning for Picard Season 3? Because Rios stayed in the 21st century and then died offscreen, Santiago Cabrera is out for Season 3, which he seemed to confirm on Instagram . Also, although Jurati has become a friendly Borg Queen , Alison Pill recently said she wasn’t “part of season three.” Additionally, both Isa Briones confirmed she’s not in Season 3 with an emotional goodbye on Instagram.

View on Instagram

Also, Evan Evagora confirmed he’s not returning as Elnor in Season 3 either, also with an emotional Instagram farewell post.

So, who is left?

Along with the return of the entire Next Generation main cast ( confirmed on April 5, 2022 ), Brent Spiner seems to be returning, but because Data is dead it’s unclear who he’ll play. Another member of the Soong family? Data’s evil android brother Lore? On Twitter, when a fan presented the options of: “A. Yet another Soong, or; B. Lore is the antagonist in season 3,” Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas responded with “Or C,” implying that Spiner’s role is still unknown. Could a new version of Data be reborn in the prototype android B-4 from Star Trek Nemesis ? Spiner’s voiceover in the teaser trailer for Season 3 sounded like a totally new character, so honestly, who knows.

Overall, in terms of casting, Picard Season 3 is a pretty big reboot insofar as the only two characters unique to the series Star Trek: Picard , who are (probably) returning for Season 3 are Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker and (likely) Orla Brady as Laris. This means that unlike Seasons 1 and 2, Picard Season 3 will be mostly legacy characters from Next Generation, plus Seven of Nine, who, of course, originated in Voyager . Here’s how that shakes out.

  • Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard
  • Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine
  • Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker
  • Orla Brady as Laris (not confirmed)
  • Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker
  • Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi
  • Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher
  • LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge
  • Michael Dorn as Worf
  • Brent Spiner as ???

Although Wil Wheaton appeared in a surprising cameo in the Season 2 finale as Wesley Crusher/the Traveler, there’s no word on whether he’ll be in Season 3. Wheaton was not in the TNG cast reveal for Picard Season 3, and the actor himself hasn’t confirmed or denied anything.

But because the entire Next Generation cast’s return was revealed while Season 2 was still airing, it seems likely there are more casting announcements, cameos, and surprises coming for Picard Season 3.

Is there a trailer for Star Trek: Picard Season 3?

Oddly, there’s already a trailer for Picard Season 3. On April 5, 2022 (First Contact Day) Paramount+ released a short teaser that showed Jean-Luc reflecting on his Next Generation days, complete with a moment in which he busted out his red Enterprise-D uniform from storage. This trailer also confirmed the participation of all six of Patrick Stewart’s TNG co-stars. In the trailer, Riker (Jonathan Frakes) describes it as a “good old-fashioned road trip.”

Is there a release date for Star Trek: Picard Season 3?

Not yet. However, because Season 3 has already wrapped production and is therefore presumably in post-production, this puts Picard Season 3 ahead of other future live-action Trek seasons. Discovery Season 5 has yet to start filming, and Strange New Worlds Season 2 is currently filming.

Could we, therefore, see Picard Season 3 in late 2022? Lower Decks Season 3 is slated for August, so it’s possible that Picard Season 3 could follow it in Fall 2022. While it might sound odd for two seasons of the same Trek show to air in one year, it actually happened recently. Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 ended in January 2021, and Season 4 began in November 2021.

Could 2022 close out with the final season of Picard ? We’ll have to see if Paramount+ decides to make it so.

Star Trek: Picard Seasons 1-2 are streaming now on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 potential release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Expect to see some familiar faces...

preview for Star Trek: Picard Cast vs IRL

Picard spoilers follow.

With season two now over, there's only one more chapter left before we bid the series adieu forever – but will the character be put to rest as well or will he appear again in the ever-expanding Star Trek universe?

At least we won't have to wait as long for season two as we did season three. To make up for lost production time mid-pandemic, the Powers That Be at Star Trek decided to film the second and third seasons back-to-back in case of more delays.

Pretty smart thinking right? And now it's just a matter of waiting for the series to be put together and given some A-Star effects treatment to get it perfect for fans.

But what lies ahead in the final instalment?

So join us here at Digital Spy as we boldly go one last time into Picard 's world and look ahead to what's coming next in the third and final season.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 release date: When will it air?

patrick stewart as picard, star trek picard season 2 episode 6

Star Trek: Picard fans can rest easy in the knowledge that the third and final season will be with them on February 12, 2023. The news came accompanied by a brand spanking new teaser trailer (more on that below).

As previously mentioned, season three was filmed immediately after season two, which wasn't exactly easy for anyone involved, least of all Patrick Stewart.

Speaking to Variety following the season-two finale, everyone's favourite captain revealed that filming wrapped for season three in March 2022. Five weeks later, Sir Patrick admitted he was "still recovering from it"... which gives us all kinds of excitement for what's coming up.

"It was very intense," Sir Patrick said. "We filmed the 10 episodes of season two and wrapped it at about seven o'clock in the evening, and began season three at seven o'clock the next morning. And it was like that for about 13 months, I think. Longer than a year, I know that."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast: Who's coming back?

jeri ryan as seven of nine, star trek picard

Following the events of season two, we expect the following cast members will return for Picard season three, including: Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, Michelle Hurd as Rafaella "Raffi" Musiker, Evan Evagora as Elnor, and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine .

One notable exception to this will be Alison Pill after she recently confirmed that Agnes Jurati won't be returning in the final season.

"I know that season three will be the end," Pill told MovieWeb . "I wasn't a part of season three, so I don't have much to say about it in terms of spoilers. I will get to watch along with everybody else."

There's also a question mark around Santiago Cabrera's involvement now that Cristobal "Chris" Rios has decided to stay in the past and live out his life there instead.

Thankfully, some very special cast members have been lined up to take their place. Before season two even finished airing, Picard had already announced that a huge number of classic characters from Next Generation play a key role in season three .

These include: LeVar Burton (Lt Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Gates McFadden (Dr Beverly Crusher), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T Riker), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi) and Brent Spiner (Data).

But don’t expect Spiner to just play Data. According to the actor (via TrekMovie ), "Lore is in it in a very complicated way which I think you’ll find out ultimately when you watch the show. What else can I tell you? Really nothing because we were informed long ago - we signed these NDAs."

When talking about his return to the role, Burton said (via TrekMovike.com ) : "We're all done now and it was an absolute blast. It was so good to be together. I mean, we're all very, very close anyway. We try to get together once a year for Christmas, but during COVID we weren't able to do that, so being able to get together at the end of last year and the beginning of this year was really cool for us."

He went on to say that it was the perfect send-off for the Next Generation cast.

"We all thought the ship had sailed on a conscious goodbye," he shared. "When me made our last movie, Nemesis in 2002, we expected there to be another one, and then things changed. So this was a great gift to us.

"This season of Picard is a love poem to Next Generation and we get to see these people that we grew to know and even love at this new point in their lives."

Picard showrunner Terry Matalas celebrated the news in a joyous statement (via Deadline ). "I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science-fiction. So, it's most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honouring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the USS Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honour," he said.

"The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can't wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!"

And let's not forget about this season's antagonist . Matalas teased that a major star is set to play the show's next villain, but he wasn't prepared to give fans any hint as to who it may be.

Replying to a fan on Twitter who asked whether the next villain will be a new character, the show boss replied: "It is a new character. Played by someone you've seen a million times before. Someone I've always wanted to work with. And… wow. You're not ready."

After ruling out Star Trek regular Jeffrey Combs, Matalas later confirmed that it will be someone completely new to the Trek universe – so start placing your bets on who it will be (and if you bet Amanda Plummer , you were right!)

Star Trek: Picard season 3 plot: What will happen?

Speaking to EW following the season two finale, Patrick Stewart hinted at how the Next Generation crew will return in season three:

"We will meet them, but it's not a reassembling at all. It's not just a reunion. Everybody has a function, and that's really all I'm allowed to say, because what's coming up in season three I think is very exciting. And, of course, a lot of it will involve the way that the characters we've known for so long have evolved."

More specific plot points remain elusive for now, although Stewart did tease that season three could be the most interesting of all.

"When I read for the first time the ending of season two, I do remember one of the things that I said was, 'Where the hell are we going to go from here?' Because it almost seemed that there was a conclusion," he said.

"I wondered for a moment, 'Oh dear, are we going to be wrapped early, and the show will disappear?' But we did not. And season three, in many respects, proved to me to be among the most interesting of episodes and moments that we had in the whole show."

But what does the future hold beyond that? Well, comments by Sir Patrick seemingly putting a full stop on the world past the final batch of episodes.

"I think that Picard has said his last sentence and given his last look at his colleagues," he told Variety. "I think the way we close season three is perfect. Perfect. It makes me emotional each time I think of it, but it's great."

Whatever happens, expect season three to feel cinematic.

"Terry Matalas was so in love - in the most beautiful way - with the idea of saying, 'I want to see that last Next Gen movie, that movie that I never got to see,'" showrunner Alex Kurtzman said (via TrekMovie ). "But let’s tell that story over 10 episodes and make it one big blowout. And he really delivered on that.

"Because the truth is, if we had sat down and said let’s do a Next Gen movie and you’ve got two hours to introduce all these characters, then everybody would have been shortchanged. There’s no way it would have worked. And so I think the fact that we got to do it over these 10 hours with this farewell, to me, it’s a love letter to what Picard was. It’s a love letter to all fans of Star Trek and to this to the legacy of this incredible show."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 trailer: When can we expect it?

preview for Star Trek: Picard - Final season sneak peek (Paramount+)

First, we had a teaser - and it was a very good teaser (that you can watch above).

Just short of one and a half minutes, the brief trailer shows admiral Jean-Luc Picard receiving an SOS message before meeting up with his old pal Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in a bar, seeking his help.

Now he swears he's not asking him to put himself in any danger but the sub-context suggests otherwise. We're sure you'll make up your own minds once you've watched and rewatched and (and rewatched) it.

We've since had a full trailer - and it's pretty amazing.

It lays out the plot, stakes, introduces our new villain (played by Amanda Plummer, who seems to be having the time of her life), and finds time for a couple of goosebump moments.

Keep checking in here and we promise to keep you updated with any more news.

It's almost time to say goodbye to Star: Trek Picard with the final episode of season 3 airing.

Sir Patrick Stewart has returned to the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for an epic season that has so far seen twists and turns as well as life-changing revelations and life-threatening situations.

We're now in the home stretch of the show with just the season 3 finale left to air in the UK, but the series has delighted fans so far, not least with all the cameos.

It's going out with a bang, with various icons from Star Trek: The Next Generation on board to see out the final episodes, while episode 9 featured a big twist about Jack's identity and the return of a particularly special old friend. If you know, you know.

Read on for everything you need to know about when new episodes of Star Trek : Picard are released.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 episode 10 will be streaming on Prime Video from Friday 21st April .

It will be the final episode of the season and - prepare yourselves - the final episode of the series as a whole, with season 3 expected to the the show's last.

How many episodes are in Star Trek: Picard season 3?

Picard season 3 consists of 10 episodes .

The story so far has been completely wild, with threats from Changelings, as well as the reveal that Jack, Dr Beverley Crusher's son, is actually also Picard's son. Episode 9 saw even more revelations about Jack's identity, while some old friends have returned to see out the series.

We're expecting even more twists and turns in the finale episode, so watch this space!

While season 3 is billed to be the end for Picard, fans haven't given up on this story. In fact, plenty are behind the idea that a new spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy , focused on a bond between old and new characters across the generations of the Star Trek family, could very well be on the cards.

Showrunner Terry Matalas has been clear that nothing of the sort is in development just yet, telling SFX : "Shaw does not make it out alive. However, we do have plans for a Shaw character – specifically Todd Stashwick – to be a part of Legacy that I can’t talk about, but we always knew we would never do that show without Todd. So we had plans in place for that, should it ever happen. But there’s nothing in development, unfortunately.”

However, with the showrunner, cast, and fans on board, we're not ruling it out just yet.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 Gets New Science Lab… And 2025 Release

star trek picard season 3 release date

| March 28, 2024 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 65 comments so far

In addition to updates on Section 31 and Academy as well as Star Trek feature films , the big cover piece in this week’s Variety also had some tidbits about the third season of Strange New Worlds , which is still in production.

Frakes mystery episode (and puppets?)… coming in 2025

Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will continue the show’s style of mixing up different genres. According to the Variety feature on Star Trek, this will include an episode “framed as a Hollywood murder mystery,” directed by Jonathan Frakes, who describes it as “the best episode of television I’ve ever done.”

Season 2 ramped up the genre-hopping style of the show, but co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman says he is still not sure if there is a limit. From Variety :

“At this point, is there a genre that ‘Strange New Worlds’ can’t do? “As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” Goldsman says with an impish smile. ‘Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!'”

It sounds like Goldsman was just spitballing ideas, so maybe those are just season 4 possibilities. Season 2 saw a crossover with Lower Decks (directed by Frakes) that mixed live-action and animation, as well as a musical episode. While the mention of Muppets may have been a joke, is it such a stretch? It can be argued that Strange New Worlds followed in the footsteps of the acclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode from 2001, so why not follow the Buffy spinoff Angel, which did a puppet episode titled “ Smile Time ” in 2004?

The double strikes of 2023 caused a seven-month delay in the start of filming, which finally began in December. As of last week, they were just starting to shoot episode 7 . Production for the 10-episode season should be wrapped up in mid-May. As expected, it looks like we won’t see the series return until next year. A throwaway line in the Variety piece noted that Season 3 will arrive in 2025.

Spock’s new lab

Season 3 is introducing a new set for the USS Enterprise: a science lab, described as “a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team.”

Here is the first look:

Spock is studying a “Chimera Blossum,” according to the screens behind him. As pointed out by Jörg Hillebrand on Twitter/X , Spock’s red environmental suit is a modernized version of the one he wore in the TOS episode “The Naked Time.”

The Variety piece also had some fun behind-the-scenes details, like how the pathway outside the virtual AR wall set is dotted with posters from the Star Trek: The Next Generation holodeck, along with the words “Enter Holodeck” in classic Trek type.  Ethan Peck talks about those signs and working with the AR wall:

“I want to take one of those home with me,” Peck says. Does the AR wall also affect him? “I don’t really get disoriented by it. Spock would not get ill, so I’m Method acting.”

Series star Anson Mount also weighed in on working with the AR Wall, noting the way images move across the wall “make no sense” when you are inside the set and it can be disorienting, with the actor pro tip to “focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.” AR Wall dizziness aside, Mount remains his enthusiastic self, even into his fourth season of Trek (counting Discovery season 2):

I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t at some point stop and think to myself, ‘I’m on fucking “Star Trek.’

I think most of us assumed it wouldn’t come out until 2025 but looking forward to it.

I do assume Goldsman is just joking about the Muppets but you never know with this guy lol.

The angel puppet ep was pretty good. Is this new set a redress of a past bridge?

Never seen Angel but now I’m intrigued lol.

I’m pretty sure that’s a new set.

The Angel puppet episode is hilarious.

It’s a very funny episode!

Ok now have find it and watch it! Thanks guys.

Would I feel lost on the story itself?

I’ve maybe seen a dozen ANGEL eps, and I think this one is a standalone pretty much, though some of the supporting players may come off a little … strange.

I won’t hold my breath for an episode where the Cookie Monster has a cameo…

Normally I would figure cookie monster is a reference to Shatner’s weight, but after seeing him on Kimmel I have to admit he seems to be in much slimmer shape.

Naah, I wouldn’t do that. Especially after just recently giving him mucho respect for THE INTRUDER! The mention of puppets and Muppets above reminded me of an incident from my pre-kmart era as a young filmmaker, when one of my actors had to climb with a flashlight through part of an interior ship set, to get to something that needed repair in the story. What my friend (in 1975) didn’t know, is that I had secreted a Cookie Monster puppet deep inside the bowels of the ship (set). What ensued was shock and fright, followed by laughter, shaking walls, and a shouted “Damn you, Kevin!” coming from the back of the set. I have a couple of pics of that, somewhere.

That’a a good gag. On a somewhat meaner note, I have to mention that in order to get a shocked reaction out of Paul Vallerga (you might remember him as my roommate at the time I was first making CRITICAL ORBIT, as the Devil in MisJudgment Day — that movie we shot in a suite at the LeBaron hotel — or as Felix Leiter in YOU ONLY DIE THRICE), I revealed to him that his favorite actor Robert Shaw had just died while the camera was rolling. This was low on a ‘Jackie, your dog just got hit by a car’ level, but it did work, though for a movie (pre-Vokar) you probably never saw called CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD REICH, made for my German class in high school but later redubbed into English for a contest that channel 54 was having. We used whipped cream instead of mashed potatoes and shot the UFO arrival at Cinema 150 theater, which is of course where the film debuted months earlier.

Oh sure, I remember Vallerga! He was the very serious guy who thought he was better than the rest of us, right? I do vaguely recall seeing YOU ONLY DIE THRICE, a long time ago. And I can recall doing some shooting for your films CRITICAL ORBIT and STARS. We need our own bbs…

I was going to mention my film MAN OUT OF TIME, but it’s a MOOT point. *smirk*

He did have some genuine talent — he wrote the original version of MisJudgement Day, called STAYIN’ ALIVE, then retitled GOD, SATAN & SIDNEY CZINOWITZ, plus another short script called SOUL OF DARKNESS that preceded BLADE by quite a few years, that was one we came pretty close to shooting, and I think you were going to play the grieving and soon to be dead husband of a female victim of the main vamp. I actually storyboarded the thing — yeah, the images were as illegible as my handwriting and printing, but they worked for me — but we couldn’t figure out a way to flood a culvert where the climax was going to take place. Also, there was potential for disaster, as we’re talking night shooting and lights plus water.

But Vallerga always felt he had to scoop stuff in from other people’s work — some steals from MORK for the first one, some steals from STAR TREK in SOUL, right out of AMOK TIME, less than subtle, easily recognizable. He has managed to afford to keep living in the bay area (maybe he inherited his folks’ place in Los Gatos?), I looked him up, and he teaches drama/stage stuff at some ritzy pay-to-go high school, so he stayed true to his roots (although those are his only roots, he looked balder than Patrick Stewart in the image I found.)

Don’t know if I shared this here or not, but one night when we were shooting CRITICAL ORBIT in my upstairs bedroom (standing in for auxililary control on the ship), Vallerga was walking home and looked up at our apartment. We had a bank of four 600 watt lights that were being flickered, and it put such a strain on the local circuits that lights for the entire building encompassing adjoining apartments was strobing on and off. Might have looked cooler than what we were shooting inside! (we were probably doing the electrocution of the John Nelson character Martin Hansard, which was awkward because he refused to lay down on the floor, so we had to shoot everything at right angles with him ‘lying down’ against the wall of the set.)

My main memory of Nelson is when he “kindly” did one little scene in one of my short films in the garage/studio, with an alien (played by my dad) strangling him. Oh, how I wanted to take dad’s place for the closeup! Yeah, N was pretty humorless, unless it was at my expense or yours. BTW, wasn’t I a character in C.O. for a shot or two in the dining room? A shot where my line was followed by your puppy making a fart sound or whatever underneath the table?

If I’d actually finished CO, you’d’ve probably been the fifth-billing character, as you would have had a bunch of scenes down in the ship’s power bay (dominated by a pair of sunglass racks with pulsed fluorescents inside, masquerading as towering glowing energy cores, looking a lot like something out of THE MATRIX 15 years later.)

The only scene I actually shot showing the power bay was when, in desperation, I cast my mother as the ship’s soon-to-be-late captain. It actually looked really good — we were on what was supposed to be a ledge, and the sunglass racks were only a few feet away, but I had blue plastic stretched between us and the racks, which created a veil of atmostphere making them look like they were off in the distance. But mom was even hammier than I was, and she kind of came off like Grace Zabriskie (Laura Palmer’s mom) when she played the captain of the Hesperus in GALAXY OF TERROR (the movie where Jim Cameron electrically shocked slugs to get them to ‘perform.’)

That puppy, Peanut, was probably 8 or 10 years old, but yeah, it did fart right after you delivered a dramatic line, ‘power level zero in 15 minutes.’ It sounded like a bass music stinger! Sort of like what Goldsmith did when Shatner is spelling v … g … e … r – vger!

I just thought Peanut was very young from his/her size, which I recall as pretty small. Making sets is one thing I can’t do these days, due to my lack of wood-working tools and my leg and feet neuropathy pain issues. So we are shooting in existing exteriors and interiors. I miss that 2-car garage studio I had to make films in, back in San Jose. That was great!

My folks actually had a pro portrait done of Peanut when he was about 15 (how he lived that long with the way they fed him — often being dropped whole frozen hamburgers — I’ll never know) that was printed at about 16×20 and must have been much bigger lthan life-sized. They got another chihauhau, Shakespeare, after that, but it was more like THE ENEMY WITHIN version, as it snapped at and bit everybody, whereas Peanut practically invented the ‘trust fall’ he was so sweet.

I still remember the first time Peanut did that for me when I was house-sitting. He climbed up in my lap, then flung himself backwards, apparently expecting me to catch him. It was a very AlanRickman/HansGruber/DieHard moment, seeing his startled expression as he fell (In fact, every time I remember that funny but painful moment, it is with the Michael Kamen score for that film superimposed on the moment as he falls.)

My tolerance for these “Big Swings” directly correlates to the low number of episodes these guys have to tell actual sci fi stories. If we’re talking 24 episodes, I’d be a lot more tolerant of these show runners and writers desires to do other genres. Here’s an idea… why don’t they go get a job where they can actually write for a puppet based show? I’m anxious to see some writers that actually want to play in the world of Star Trek, not shoehorn Trek into something it’s not. This is an unserious writing staff. So over it.

Thanks for describing why I don’t watch SNW.

There’s plenty of precedent for the crew of starships named Enterprise encountering powerful beings who can warp reality. If they do a Muppet episode, hopefully it involves a bratty near-omnipotent kid playing with the crew by transforming them into puppets. At the end, after reality has been restored to normal, we could hear the voice of John de Lancie telling the kid to leave the humans alone for a little while; he has checked up on them in a couple hundred years and wants them to have some time to mature before then. [As long as the kid never identifies themselves as a Q, but maybe calls themselves Quentin or Queen, it wouldn’t break canon.]

Yeah, with modern TV production and the strike, I anticipated a 2025 release date, although they could have done what they did one year with Discovery and given us the first 5 episodes later this year and the next 5 early next year, but I suspect the Section 31 movie will drop later this year and they are trying to not “oversaturate” the Star Trek available at once, apparently believing that too much content is their problem rather than too little great content. Ah well. Strange New Worlds is worth waiting for, so here I am…. waiting. :)

Well hopefully there isn’t a super long production gap between the filming of S3 and the filming of S4. I realize post-production takes the longest, but hopefully cast and crew will take a shorter break to compensate.

I think that was the only possibility.

Maybe!’”

Can SNW do gimmicks? Sure! Impish smile, indeed.

I don’t mind them as long as they are good but yeah I was very mixed on the musical and pray they never do it again.

The musical episode had some good scenes but it wasn’t my favorite either. Although, I do admire their willingness to try new things. I am hoping the addition of the science set means we might actually get them visiting some strange new worlds. Those haven’t been as plentiful as I would like with this show.

Definitely agree about the musical.

I actually liked it more than I thought I would. It was fun and obviously creative but I have only watched it once when it aired.. I still have zero desire to watch it again.

And yes the criticism I and others had about season 2 is the complete lack of any real exploration. I just don’t understand that you know 90% of your audience watch the show for this reason, you call your show Strange New Worlds to emphasize it and yet only spend 1 or 2 episodes on It.

It doesn’t have to be the whole season or even half but should be more than 1 or 2.

Now, now. They explored Vermont and the Great White North.

The episode was technically sound, and I enjoyed it as an aside. I wish they had kept it non canonical though. I despise the efforts to explain it and place it as an actual event. It’s just not believable.

What’s odd is that TV shows usually pull this sort of stuff when they’re in their sixth or seventh season and getting desperate for ideas.

I think it’s because they don’t have any decent Sci Fi writers on the show that could elevate the exploration theme that the show is supposed to be about with it’s title Strange New Worlds. Instead we get awful writing for it’s characters, weak sit com and gimmick shows. Unfortunately as season 2 was probably a success we will get more of more nonsense rather than quality Sci Fi writing or decent ideas. Also why have new ideas when you just take TOS canon and basically walk all over and do what you like with it.

That is why TOS was great, they had actual science fiction writers writing the scripts.

Yeah, could be. I like to think that every writer has at least one good sci-fi idea in them, it just depends if they’re allowed to use it. I mean, it could be an order coming down from the top that these shows need to take “big swings” in terms of gimmicks and nostalgia and so forth to get as many subscribers as possible. But who knows with these things.

Order coming down from the top or not it’s pretty mediocre rubbish being dished out. The fact that people are lapping this up worries me. Forget sci fi what about character growth as there was actually zero in season 2 unless you think romances with zero substance is a good thing in Star Trek. It does make me laugh that Discovery gets absolutely slaughtered here but people think SNW is good story telling and character growth (which it is certainly none of the above). Why because it has recast legacy characters? Older Star Trek did very good episodic and sometimes really good sci fi to boot episodes. SNW season 2 is a mish mash on nonsense episodes and very shallow poor writing even for a sit com series. You know The Orville did it much better than this if you like that sit com vibe. Nah this is not good Star Trek and if the Academy series is anything like this , Star Trek is going nowhere. Just look what we have to look forward to this and another mindless Star Trek action flick 😞

I’ve seen a copy of their master plan for the gimmick episode per season.

S1 – Fantasy. S2 – Musical. S3 – Muppets. S4 – Gameshow. S5 – Sitcom. S6 – Anime. S7 – Bollywood S8 – Mockumentary. S9 – Whodunnit? S10 – It was all a Holodeck program.

Season 2 actually had 4 gimmick episodes for me. 1) Doctor and nurse go John Wick on us 2) Spock becomes human and acts like a complete idiot 3) Let’s start with a cartoon and then turn it into live action and then back to a cartoon again. I can’t say much more but ffs 4) Disney high School Musical with some nonsensical reason for it all. And wow that is nearly half a season of gimmicks lol. Season 1 had potential and only 2 gimmick episodes the fairytale one and the silly Spock brain swap one. Hopefully season 3 doesn’t follow this trend with 6 gimmick episodes 😟 Is this what Star Trek has become.

lol! Im with you, dude.. 10 episodes a season, and they want to fill it with more side projects than actual Star Trek and Sci Fi.

I CALLED IT. GO LOOK AT THE COMMENTS ON THAT LAST ARTICLE ABOUT SNW I SAID IT WAS PUPPETS

Oh, it will happen…..

So it’s your fault then, thanks.

Jonathan Frakes is an amazing director. His best work is FC and S3 Picard. I often wondered what NEM would have looked like with Frakes instead of Baird.

I think “The Offspring” is his best television episode. Yes he’s an amazing director and look forward to more of his work.

I’d take both The Drumhead and Cause and Effect from TNG (and both of his parts 2 from DS9, come to think of it.) But The Offspring is very good.

I consider FC the best-directed of any ST feature, and yes, NEM might have been a wee bit better! ;)

There is a banquet hall in The San Fernando Valley that has a pool in the floor like the new Science Lab set. That one has koi fish.

there is a resturant near my town that has a glass floor and you can see the micro brewery below the main floor making the beers they serve

My guess is that is Cetacean Ops!!!

Too long of a wait for the return of my favorite show. It’s good to have stuff to look forward to, I guess.

It’s funny to see that the shower curtain environmental suit got a modern update. It looks good.

At this point, is there a genre that ‘Strange New Worlds’ can’t do? “

Yes, Star Trek!

Ok lets spitball potential episode ideas since Goldsman is so fond of doing it: I am thinking a Trek erotic thriller or a body horror episode directed by David Cronenberg.

That sounds awesome! In S2, they talked about big swings, but took zero risks. A Cronenberg style episode would be a big swing and something new.

I was even thinking that they should get Cronenberg to direct it since he is part of the franchise as an actor, maybe they could pay him a bit more to get him to direct.

“ they talked about big swings, but took zero risks.”

Damn…

Now that it’s confirmed we are in a separate timeline from TOS, I’m on board with whatever they go with – and will likely skip any Muppet episode.

When was that confirmed?

The episode with Khan basically said it. They said that history has been modified numerous times, which is why the Eugenics Wars (from SNW’s perspective) didn’t actually happen in the 90s. Since Trek deals with time travel by creating timelines whenever there’s a change, it means SNW is not in the same timeline as TOS.

This ^, thank you, Chris.

2025!?!?!?! The people in charge of these shows SEEMS like they do everything in their power to ruin them. There has been so many shows that I’ve lost interest in because of these ridiculous long waits between seasons.

Post-production takes a LONG time…

I think we can give them a break this year, I mean the strikes are the big reason for delays, now if the delayed seasons keep happening then I agree!

Who knows if Paramount will exist next year as an independent company?

Mr. Mount is really a good guy.

If it’s Muppets using puppets like Farscape did, or real Yoda from TESB, go for it. I’ll watch. Particularly if it’s like the TOS small birdlike creatures named Korob and Sylvia… or fake Balok… or other TOS examples. Trek already has had puppetry since the beginning.

Star Trek legend calls his Strange New Worlds season 3 murder-mystery “the best episode of television I’ve ever done"

Season 3 is expected to drop in 2025

star trek

Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes has some high praise for Strange New Worlds season 3.

"[It's] the best episode of television I’ve ever done," Frakes told Variety , referring to a Hollywood murder-mystery episode he directed. The actor-director starred as Captain William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and began directing episodes during the show's third season. He went on to helm Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and episodes of almost every subsequent live-action Star Trek TV show including Voyager, Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds.

Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise as they embark on intergalactic adventures that take place in the 23rd century. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and Ugly Betty writer Henry Alonso Myers serve as showrunners. The cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Rebecca Romijn.

The series premiered in on Paramount Plus, the home for all things Star Trek, in 2022 and became the most-watched original Star Trek series on the network. Season 2 was greenlit in January 2022 and aired in June 2023. Season 3 was announced in March of last year, but production was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 does not yet have a release date, but is expected to hit Paramount Plus sometime in 2025. For more, check out our list of the best new TV shows coming your way in 2024 and beyond.

The Future of ‘Star Trek’: From ‘Starfleet Academy’ to New Movies and Michelle Yeoh, How the 58-Year-Old Franchise Is Planning for the Next Generation of Fans

“I can’t believe I get to play the captain of the Enterprise.”

“Strange New Worlds” is the 12th “Star Trek” TV show since the original series debuted on NBC in 1966, introducing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a hopeful future for humanity. In the 58 years since, the “Star Trek” galaxy has logged 900 television episodes and 13 feature films, amounting to 668 hours — nearly 28 days — of content to date. Even compared with “Star Wars” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Star Trek” stands as the only storytelling venture to deliver a single narrative experience for this long across TV and film.

In other words, “Star Trek” is not just a franchise. As Alex Kurtzman , who oversees all “Star Trek” TV production, puts it, “‘Star Trek’ is an institution.”

Without a steady infusion of new blood, though, institutions have a way of fading into oblivion (see soap operas, MySpace, Blockbuster Video). To keep “Star Trek” thriving has meant charting a precarious course to satisfy the fans who have fueled it for decades while also discovering innovative ways to get new audiences on board.

“Doing ‘Star Trek’ means that you have to deliver something that’s entirely familiar and entirely fresh at the same time,” Kurtzman says.

The franchise has certainly weathered its share of fallow periods, most recently after “Nemesis” bombed in theaters in 2002 and UPN canceled “Enterprise” in 2005. It took 12 years for “Star Trek” to return to television with the premiere of “Discovery” in 2017; since then, however, there has been more “Star Trek” on TV than ever: The adventure series “Strange New Worlds,” the animated comedy “Lower Decks” and the kids series “Prodigy” are all in various stages of production, and the serialized thriller “Picard” concluded last year, when it ranked, along with “Strange New Worlds,” among Nielsen’s 10 most-watched streaming original series for multiple weeks. Nearly one in five Paramount+ subscribers in the U.S. is watching at least one “Star Trek” series, according to the company, and more than 50% of fans watching one of the new “Trek” shows also watch at least two others. The new shows air in 200 international markets and are dubbed into 35 languages. As “Discovery” launches its fifth and final season in April, “Star Trek” is in many ways stronger than it’s ever been.

“’Star Trek’s fans have kept it alive more times than seems possible,” says Eugene Roddenberry, Jr., who executive produces the TV series through Roddenberry Entertainment. “While many shows rightfully thank their fans for supporting them, we literally wouldn’t be here without them.”

But the depth of fan devotion to “Star Trek” also belies a curious paradox about its enduring success: “It’s not the largest fan base,” says Akiva Goldsman, “Strange New Worlds” executive producer and co-showrunner. “It’s not ‘Star Wars.’ It’s certainly not Marvel.”

When J.J. Abrams rebooted “Star Trek” in 2009 — with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña playing Kirk, Spock and Uhura — the movie grossed more than any previous “Star Trek” film by a comfortable margin. But neither that film nor its two sequels broke $500 million in global grosses, a hurdle every other top-tier franchise can clear without breaking a sweat.

There’s also the fact that “Star Trek” fans are aging. I ask “The Next Generation” star Jonathan Frakes, who’s acted in or directed more versions of “Star Trek” than any other person alive, how often he meets fans for whom the new “Star Trek” shows are their first. “Of the fans who come to talk to me, I would say very, very few,” he says. “‘Star Trek’ fans, as we know, are very, very, very loyal — and not very young.”

As Stapf puts it: “There’s a tried and true ‘Trek’ fan that is probably going to come to every ‘Star Trek,’ no matter what it is — and we want to expand the universe.”

Every single person I spoke to for this story talked about “Star Trek” with a joyful earnestness as rare in the industry as (nerd alert) a Klingon pacifist.

“When I’m meeting fans, sometimes they’re coming to be confirmed, like I’m kind of a priest,” Ethan Peck says during a break in filming on the “Strange New Worlds” set. He’s in full Spock regalia — pointy ears, severe eyebrows, bowl haircut — and when asked about his earliest memories of “Star Trek,” he stares off into space in what looks like Vulcan contemplation. “I remember being on the playground in second or third grade and doing the Vulcan salute, not really knowing where it came from,” he says. “When I thought of ‘Star Trek,’ I thought of Spock. And now I’m him. It’s crazy.”

To love “Star Trek” is to love abstruse science and cowboy diplomacy, complex moral dilemmas and questions about the meaning of existence. “It’s ultimately a show with the most amazing vision of optimism, I think, ever put on-screen in science fiction,” says Kurtzman, who is 50. “All you need is two minutes on the news to feel hopeless now. ‘Star Trek’ is honestly the best balm you could ever hope for.”

I’m getting a tour of the USS Enterprise from Scotty — or, rather, “Strange New World” production designer Jonathan Lee, who is gushing in his native Scottish burr as we step into the starship’s transporter room. “I got such a buzzer from doing this, I can’t tell you,” he says. “I actually designed four versions of it.”

Lee is especially proud of the walkway he created to run behind the transporter pads — an innovation that allows the production to shoot the characters from a brand-new set of angles as they beam up from a far-flung planet. It’s one of the countless ways that this show has been engineered to be as cinematic as possible, part of Kurtzman’s overall vision to make “Star Trek” on TV feel like “a movie every week.”

Kurtzman’s tenure with “Star Trek” began with co-writing the screenplay for Abrams’ 2009 movie, which was suffused with a fast-paced visual style that was new to the franchise. When CBS Studios approached Kurtzman in the mid-2010s about bringing “Star Trek” back to TV, he knew instinctively that it needed to be just as exciting as that film.

“The scope was so much different than anything we had ever done on ‘Next Gen,’” says Frakes, who’s helmed two feature films with the “Next Generation” cast and directed episodes of almost every live-action “Trek” TV series, including “Discovery” and “Strange New Worlds.” “Every department has the resources to create.”

A new science lab set for Season 3, for example, boasts a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team. “I like being able to paint on a really big canvas,” Kurtzman says. “The biggest challenge is always making sure that no matter how big something gets, you’re never losing focus on that tiny little emotional story.”

At this point, is there a genre that “Strange New Worlds” can’t do? “As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” Goldsman says with an impish smile. “Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!”

This approach is also meant to appeal to people who might want to watch “Star Trek” but regard those 668 hours of backstory as an insurmountable burden. “You shouldn’t have to watch a ‘previously on’ to follow our show,” Myers says.

To achieve so many hairpin shifts in tone and setting while maintaining Kurtzman’s cinematic mandate, “Strange New Worlds” has embraced one of the newest innovations in visual effects: virtual production. First popularized on the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” the technology — called the AR wall — involves a towering circular partition of LED screens projecting a highly detailed, computer-generated backdrop. Rather than act against a greenscreen, the actors can see whatever fantastical surroundings their characters are inhabiting, lending a richer level of verisimilitude to the show.

But there is a catch. While the technology is calibrated to maintain a proper sense of three-dimensional perspective through the camera lens, it can be a bit dizzying for anyone standing on the set. “The images on the walls start to move in a way that makes no sense,” says Mount. “You end up having to focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.”

And yet, even as he’s talking about it, Mount can’t help but break into a boyish grin. “Sometimes we call it the holodeck,” he says. In fact, the pathway to the AR wall on the set is dotted with posters of the virtual reality room from “The Next Generation” and the words “Enter Holodeck” in a classic “Trek” font.

“I want to take one of those home with me,” Peck says. Does the AR wall also affect him? “I don’t really get disoriented by it. Spock would not get ill, so I’m Method acting.”

I’m on the set of the “Star Trek” TV movie “Section 31,” seated in an opulent nightclub with a view of a brilliant, swirling nebula, watching Yeoh rehearse with director Olatunde Osunsanmi and her castmates. Originally, the project was announced as a TV series centered on Philippa Georgiou, the semi-reformed tyrant Yeoh originated on “Discovery.” But between COVID delays and the phenomenon of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” there wasn’t room in the veteran actress’s schedule to fit a season of television. Yeoh was undaunted.

“We’d never let go of her,” she says of her character. “I was just blown away by all the different things I could do with her. Honestly, it was like, ‘Let’s just get it done, because I believe in this.’”

If that means nothing to you, don’t worry: The enormity of the revelation that Garrett is being brought back is meant only for fans. If you don’t know who the character is, you’re not missing anything.

“It was always my goal to deliver an entertaining experience that is true to the universe but appeals to newcomers,” says screenwriter Craig Sweeny. “I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it.”

Nevertheless, including Garrett on the show is exactly the kind of gasp-worthy detail meant to flood “Star Trek” fans with geeky good feeling.

“You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans,” Kurtzman says. “You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans.”

On its face, that maxim would make “Section 31” a genuine risk. The titular black-ops organization has been controversial with “Star Trek” fans since it was introduced in the 1990s. “The concept is almost antagonistic to some of the values of ‘Star Trek,’” Sweeny says. But he still saw “Section 31” as an opportunity to broaden what a “Star Trek” project could be while embracing the radical inclusivity at the heart of the franchise’s appeal.

“Famously, there’s a spot for everybody in Roddenberry’s utopia, so I was like, ‘Well, who would be the people who don’t quite fit in?’” he says. “I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray. I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field. These are not people who necessarily work together the way you would see on a ‘Star Trek’ bridge.”

For Osunsanmi, who grew up watching “The Next Generation” with his father, it boils down to a simple question: “Is it putting good into the world?” he asks. “Are these characters ultimately putting good into the world? And, taking a step back, are we putting good into the world? Are we inspiring humans watching this to be good? That’s for me what I’ve always admired about ‘Star Trek.’”

Should “Section 31” prove successful, Yeoh says she’s game for a sequel. And Kurtzman is already eyeing more opportunities for TV movies, including a possible follow-up to “Picard.” The franchise’s gung-ho sojourn into streaming movies, however, stands in awkward contrast to the persistent difficulty Paramount Pictures and Abrams’ production company Bad Robot have had making a feature film following 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond” — the longest theaters have gone without a “Star Trek” movie since Paramount started making them.

First, a movie reuniting Pine’s Capt. Kirk with his late father — played in the 2009 “Star Trek” by Chris Hemsworth — fell apart in 2018. Around the same time, Quentin Tarantino publicly flirted with, then walked away from, directing a “Star Trek” movie with a 1930s gangster backdrop. Noah Hawley was well into preproduction on a “Star Trek” movie with a brand-new cast, until then-studio chief Emma Watts abruptly shelved it in 2020. And four months after Abrams announced at Paramount’s 2022 shareholders meeting that his 2009 cast would return for a movie directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”), Shakman left the project to make “The Fantastic Four” for Marvel. (It probably didn’t help that none of the cast had been approached before Abrams made his announcement.)

The studio still intends to make what it’s dubbed the “final chapter” for the Pine-Quinto-Saldaña cast, and Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) is writing a new draft of the script. Even further along is another prospective “Star Trek” film written by Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and to be directed by Toby Haynes (“Andor,” “Black Mirror: USS Callister”) that studio insiders say is on track to start preproduction by the end of the year. That project will serve as an origin story of sorts for the main timeline of the entire franchise. In both cases, the studio is said to be focused on rightsizing the budgets to fit within the clear box office ceiling for “Star Trek” feature films.

Far from complaining, everyone seems to relish the challenge. Visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman says that “working with Alex, the references are always at least $100 million movies, if not more, so we just kind of reverse engineer how do we do that without having to spend the same amount of money and time.”

The workload doesn’t seem to faze him either. “Visual effects people are a big, big ‘Star Trek’ fandom,” he says. “You naturally just get all these people who go a little bit above and beyond, and you can’t trade that for anything.”

In one of Kurtzman’s several production offices in Toronto, he and production designer Matthew Davies are scrutinizing a series of concept drawings for the newest “Star Trek” show, “Starfleet Academy.” A bit earlier, they showed me their plans for the series’ central academic atrium, a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage, the largest in Canada.

But this is a “Star Trek” show, so there do need to be starships, and Kurtzman is discussing with Davies about how one of them should look. The issue is that “Starfleet Academy” is set in the 32nd century, an era so far into the future Kurtzman and his team need to invent much of its design language.

“For me, this design is almost too Klingon,” Kurtzman says. “I want to see the outline and instinctively, on a blink, recognize it as a Federation ship.”

The time period was first introduced on Season 3 of “Discovery,” when the lead character, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), transported the namesake starship and its crew there from the 23rd century. “It was exciting, because every time we would make a decision, we would say, ‘And now that’s canon,’” says Martin-Green.

“We listened to a lot of it,” Kurtzman says. “I think I’ve been able to separate the toxic fandom from really true fans who love ‘Star Trek’ and want you to hear what they have to say about what they would like to see.”

By Season 2, the “Discovery” writers pivoted from its dour, war-torn first season and sent the show on its trajectory 900-plus years into the future. “We had to be very aware of making sure that Spock was in the right place and that Burnham’s existence was explained properly, because she was never mentioned in the original series,” says executive producer and showrunner Michelle Paradise. “What was fun about jumping into the future is that it was very much fresh snow.”

That freedom affords “Starfleet Academy” far more creative latitude while also dramatically reducing how much the show’s target audience of tweens and teens needs to know about “Star Trek” before watching — which puts them on the same footing as the students depicted in the show. “These are kids who’ve never had a red alert before,” Noga Landau, executive producer and co-showrunner, says. “They never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight.”

In the “Starfleet Academy” writers’ room in Secret Hideout’s Santa Monica offices, Kurtzman tells the staff — a mix of “Star Trek” die-hards, part-time fans and total newbies — that he wants to take a 30,000-foot view for a moment. “I think we need to ground in science more throughout the show,” he says, a giant framed photograph of Spock ears just over his shoulder. “The kids need to use science more to solve problems.”

Immediately, one of the writers brightens. “Are you saying we can amp up the techno-babble?” she says. “I’m just excited I get to use my computer science degree.”

After they break for lunch, Kurtzman is asked how much longer he plans to keep making “Star Trek.”

“The minute I fall out of love with it is the minute that it’s not for me anymore. I’m not there yet,” he says. “To be able to build in this universe to tell stories that are fundamentally about optimism and a better future at a time when the world seems to be falling apart — it’s a really powerful place to live every day.”

I love that star trek: discovery season 5's premiere cut to the chase.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 opens with a bold storytelling tactic that sets it apart from previous years' season-long mysteries, and it's awesome.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 changes its formula by revealing the treasure right away, leading to a fast-paced chase.
  • The Progenitors' technology is the galaxy's greatest treasure, connecting back to a dropped TNG plot thread.
  • This season streamlines the storytelling, focusing on a thrilling adventure and unity themes for fans old and new.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere episode, "Red Directive", cuts right to the chase, and it's fantastic. Discovery has a history of taking time to set up the mysteries at the heart of its season-long arcs, with necessary introductions of new threats that require investigation on the part of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery. Discovery 's second, third, and fourth seasons followed a relatively typical formula, with clues doled out throughout the season promising answers to the central questions: Who is the Red Angel? What caused the Burn? Why is the DMA destroying planets?

Each season of Star Trek: Discovery tightens the mystery formula a little more, so the subsequent season manages to top the last. Discovery season 4's Dark Matter Anomaly story was the series' best to date, with high stakes for the fate of the galaxy and the relationship between Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala), and a signature Star Trek moral dilemma at the center of it all. Promotional material for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 promised that the USS Discovery's crew would race others in a sprawling search for the "greatest treasure in the galaxy" , so the natural question that premise raises should be "What is the treasure?" But it isn't.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery season 5's premiere answered the season's mystery right away, knowing what the treasure is so soon changes discovery's pace for the better..

Unlike previous seasons, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", answers the season's mystery right away, instead of dragging clues out throughout the season. The greatest treasure in the galaxy is the technology used by ancient humanoids, now called the Progenitors, to create life, which was then seeded across the galaxy to become all the sentient humanoid species in the Star Trek universe, including humans. With that question out of the way, Discovery can get right into the action, as each member of the USS Discovery crew leans into their strengths to stop adversaries Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) from getting their hands on the first clue.

Discovery is no longer strictly a mystery -- it's a chase.

It's a great change of pace for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 to just hit the ground running. As Captain Michael Burnham tells the enigmatic Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) near the end of "Red Directive", Burnham can't work in the dark, and the same is true for Discovery as a show. Sure, Michael can find workarounds to get the answers, like asking Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) to do some digging into the Federation secret archives, but it's best when the cards are on the table, and everyone has the same information. Knowing that the target is Progenitor technology from the start means Discovery is no longer strictly a mystery -- it's a chase.

Discovery Season 5's Treasure Connects to TNG Directly

Tng's dropped plot thread gets woven into the fabric of discovery season 5's grander themes..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 isn't just any chase, either; it's a sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase", which explains the similarities between Star Trek 's humanoid species by giving them a common ancestor. Discovery 's Kovich specifically namedrops Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) when sharing information with Captain Burnham. Starfleet's archival footage is lifted directly from TNG , with Picard joined by Klingon, Cardassian, and Romulan representatives as they learn about the Progenitors creating life and seeding it across the galaxy. One previously nameless Romulan, Doctor Vellek (Michael Copeman), is highlighted as the brilliant scientist whose work forms the basis of Discovery 's first clue.

Dr. Kovich's crash course in 24th-century history refreshes "The Chase" to get new and old fans alike up to speed.

Connecting Star Trek: Discovery season 5's story directly to a revelation from TNG that was never properly followed up on is a great way to get the audience - especially Star Trek diehards - invested from the start. Dr. Kovich's crash course in 24th-century history refreshes "The Chase" to get new and old fans alike up to speed, and suggests revisiting the Progenitors fits right in with Discovery 's deeply overarching themes of unity and hope. Rather than drawing a single mystery out for the entire season, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 looks like it'll be a fast-paced adventure with individual clues leading to the actual greatest treasure in the galaxy: an amazing Star Trek story.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

“Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017, and kicked off a wave of new “Star Trek” storytelling that helped drive new subscribers to CBS All Access, which was still finding its footing in the streaming service wars, and was later rebranded as Paramount+. It was the first new “Star Trek” TV series since 2005′s “Enterprise,” and since then, the franchise has debuted five new Original Series, including “Short Treks,” “Picard,” “Lower Decks,” “Prodigy” and “Brand New Worlds.”

Here’s everything you need to know about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5.

What happened last time on ‘Discovery’?

The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery is still in the far flung future — as far forward in the canon “Star Trek” timeline as any series has gone, in fact. Last season, the crew was up against another cataclysmic threat, the Dark Matter Anomaly (DMA), capable of destroying entire worlds. The DMA was caused by an extra-galactic race known as the Ten-C, and Discovery was able to solve the problem with successful first contact before it wiped out Earth and Ni’Var, the rechristened home world of the united Vulcan and Romulan people.

What is ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ about?

According to a description from Paramount+, “The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well…dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.”

REVIEW: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Premiere 'Red Directive'

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 1, "Red Directive."

When Star Trek: Discovery first premiered on then-CBS All Access, it was a Star Trek series unlike any other in Gene Roddenberry's 60-year-old universe. The primary difference between it and its sister shows was that Michael Burnham, the series lead, wasn't captain of the USS Discovery when the show began. She only ascended to the captaincy near the series' end. Yet, she remains unbalanced. This will likely be a source of drama for her crew's last adventure.

Since arriving in the 32nd Century at the start of Season 3, Burnham has twice saved the Federation. First, she and the Discovery crew solved "The Burn," a cataclysm that made travel via warp drive all but impossible. Season 4 introduced a new alien species and their horrific technology dubbed "The Dark Matter Anomaly," which wiped out entire star systems. Thankfully, the high-stakes adventures she undertook in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 are less destructive. Instead, she's on a galaxy-spanning treasure hunt, chasing two new villains who stumbled upon a secret so powerful that it could shift the dynamics of power in ways that would even make the Q Continuum jealous.

Yet, it was the introduction of a Kellerun -- a species introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -- that brought the most tension to Star Trek: Discovery's Season 5 premiere, "Red Directive." Here, Burnham met Captain Rayner, a 30-year Starfleet veteran who handled himself differently than anyone she was used to. As expected, tempers flared and danger arose when the captains' opposing views clashed.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Offered Two Different Perspectives of Starfleet

Captains burnham and rayner handled their authority and responsibilities differently, star trek: discovery cast reveals the mementos they kept from the set.

Burnham represents the Federations' utopian idea, which is ironic for someone who was introduced as Starfleet's first mutineer . During the time of The Burn, Starfleet was helpless as the Federation itself crumbled. The ships' inability to travel great distances in a short time made the galactic neighborhood much larger than it was, even in the days of the 22nd Century a millennia ago. Burnham came of age in a peacetime Starfleet that only knew the promise of discovery and scientific evolution. Rayner, on the other hand, survived the harsh reality of a galaxy without Starfleet, and a universe where hope was in short supply.

Whereas Season 1's Captain Lorca was not a good Starfleet officer , Rayner is, at his core, a good representative of its mission. His priorities are a little askew from Burnham's, since he was shaped by past mistakes, a commitment to peace and, above all, saving lives. He's still on a wartime footing, even though the battles and hardships that dominated his career are over. Burnham recognized this because of the Klingon-Federation War from Star Trek: Discovery's first season.

It wasn't until she and the USS Discovery's crew survived the brutal Mirror Universe that she realized what was at the end of the slippery sloped path that a mindset forged in war would inevitably set one onto. This was evident in how Rayner was deadset on defeating the show's main villains, the freelance space-pirates L'ak and Moll, at any cost. Conversely, Burnham knew that some costs weren't worth paying.

Star Trek Theory: Picard Retconned the Divisive Enterprise Series Finale

The sequence in which the USS Discovery and Rayner's ship crash-landed on Q'Mau's surface to save a settlement from an avalanche was another great display of the captains' polarized ideologies. It was a genuinely fist-pumping moment that reminded audiences that, for all Star Trek: Discover y's differences and changes to the established conventions, it's still Star Trek .

The scene also showed that, despite all she's endured in the past, Burnham's optimism is a luxury that other captains couldn't afford. Idealistic captains like Burnham or Captain James T. Kirk from Star Trek: The Original Series frequently overcame impossible odds with ingenuity and good luck. The jaded Rayner, on the other hand, was the kind of captain Starfleet got when the odds weren't in the heroes' favor.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Focuses on Character Relationships

Star trek: discovery's final season traded galactic spectacle for intimate drama, 'we broke barriers': star trek: discovery star celebrates show's diversity.

After siding against Burnham in Season 4, Cleveland Booker is now walking a path of atonement. When Burnham and Book finally reunited in "Red Derective," the emotional shorthand they've had since she arrived in the 32nd Century was all but gone. During a brief bit of dialogue on their sunrunner space-bikes, Burnham and Book appeared to break up. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Discovery's other major romance progressed in a more positive direction. Captain Saru and Ambassador T'Rina are continuing to explore their relationship, while the former mulls a new job offer. Instead of serving on the USS Discovery, Saru would be named a Federation ambassador.

Bunrham and Saru's personal lives are now on opposite paths. Book's mission pulled him further from Michael, while Saru's new opportunity would bring him closer to T'Rina. Burnham decided to let go of her connection to Book, or at least try to. T'Rina proposed a more official codification of her relationship with Saru. In other words, marriage.

Just as Star Trek: Discovery comes to a close, Burnham and Saru reached that inevitable point all Starfleet lifers face. They have to decide between boldly going on strange new missions on a starship, or disembarking for the promise of love, family and all things that evade galactic adventurers. The producers said that Season 5 wasn't supposed to end the series , but Burnham and Saru's choice is an appropriate way to end a Star Trek crew's story.

The only downside to "Red Directive's" cinematic action and classic Star Trek situations was that it barely showed the rest of the crew's emotional journeys. Paul Stamets is, again, sad and worried about his legacy as a scientist. Sylvia Tilly is adjusting to life away from the ship, while the USS Discovery crew has never been more in sync. Time spent on Fred the galactic fence's sudden yet inevitable betrayal might have been better allocated to more moments with the crew. The treasure hunt in space aside, the conflict in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 lies in relationships and big, life-changing individual decisions . Star Trek 's strength was always in its characters, and it's great to see "Red Directive" follow this tradition.

L'ak & Moll Are Classic Star Trek Creeps

Star trek: discovery season 5's villains discovered the galaxy's greatest secret, star trek: discovery's kenneth mitchell was heroic on and off screen.

The only person L'ak and Moll kill in "Red Directive" is Fred, a Soong-type android with an eye for "vintage" technology, and his guards. He double-crossed them when negotiating for a Romulan scientist's 800-year-old diary which contained the map to Season 5's treasure. The technology Dr. Paul Vellek hid from the universe in Star Trek: The Next Generation is directly tied to one of its episodes, "The Chase" (Season 6, Episode 20).

The episode's revelations had a big effect on Star Trek canon. Here, it was revealed that an alien race known as Progenitors seeded the galaxy to encourage humanoid life to evolve, meaning that every alien from Cardassians to Klingons were related. The Romulan commander was moved by the discovery that everyone in the galaxy shared a common ancestor. This was perhaps why Dr. Vellek was hunting for them.

This was a secret the Federation wanted to keep safe, but L'ak and Moll wanted to profit from it. All they seem to know is the diary was important enough for Fred to try and kill them. Fred's sudden death and some plot contrivances can be forgiven because the two space pirates are more interesting antagonists than a Soong-type android . The Discovery crew underestimates them, but the USS Antares' crew dealt with them before. While this creates tension between the two crews, it also makes it feel like L'ak and Moll shouldn't have been able to escape.

The mission to retrieve Vellek's diary is the titular "Red Directive," which was given to Burnham by Dr. Kovich, a Starfleet spymaster . The mission's details are kept secret, and extreme measures are allowed to accomplish the task at hand. Rayner is ready to use excessive force, while Burnham clings to the Federation ideals and compassionate protocols. Thankfully, instead of keeping this dynamic going, Tilly hacks into the secure Starfleet file with the help of Admiral Vance. Armed with new information, finding the diary or the technology itself is now her primary mission.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Ties Into Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star trek: discovery's final season expanded one of the franchise's most important messages, 'bitter and sweet': star trek: discovery star reveals reaction to series cancelation.

The events of "Red Directive" aren't the first time that Star Trek: Discovery connected itself to previous Star Trek shows. Footage of Leonard Nimoy's Spock from Star Trek: Original Series was used in Season 3 when Burnham finally looked up her brother. She again encountered Captain Picard's exploits with the discovery of Dr. Vellek's journal. In classic Star Trek: The Next Generation fashion, the storytellers eschewed serialization and never returned to the idea of the Progenitors. 800 years later, galactic society is finally at a place where they might be more receptive to this message.

The Klingons of the 32nd Century are mostly a mystery, but the Romulans reunified with the Vulcans . The Ferengi are members of the Federation and Starfleet. President Rillak has both Bajoran and Cardassian ancestry. The old rivalries are mostly in the past, and the Federation continues to strive for equitable and fair governance. Starfleet may not truly be ready for the Progenitors' godlike technology, but it's best that they receive it as opposed to still-hostile races like the Breen, Dominion and Gorn. While odd, Star Trek: Discovery's changes to the franchise's world building uphold one of the series' strongest ideas: We're all more alike than different.

When creating Star Trek: The Next Generation , Roddenberry added Worf, a Klingon, to Starfleet and created "The Roddenberry Box" to show humanity's evolution. Worf's inclusion on the USS Enterprise was about making the Klingons, once Starfleet's greatest enemy, allies and friends. This continued in Star Trek: Picard Season 2, when the Jurati Borg emerged. Furthering the idea that Star Trek's species are all connected and capable of achieving true unity is a fitting goal for Star Trek: Discovery 's final season .

Rating TV-14

  • The episode is cinematic, action-packed and a visual effects spectacle.
  • Introduces new characters who feel at hom in the Star Trek universe.
  • Reintroduces one of The Next Generation's dangling story threads.
  • Not enough narrative space for every recurring character to have their moment.
  • Starting 'in medias res' before flashing back is an overused technique.
  • Not as much character conflict as some Discovery fans may be used to.
