Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Seabourn Quest

Seabourn Quest, which launched in June 2011, is one of the smallest ships in Seabourn's fleet. It can fit up to 458 passengers and about one crew member for every cruiser. It is virtually identical to the Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey .

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. Quest sails to and from destinations around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe and more.

As part of Oceania's fleetwide revamp, Regatta was completely redesigned in September 2019. Passengers in Veranda Staterooms and Suites will enjoy verandas and spaces ranging from 216 to 1,000 square feet, while Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller. The ship now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone. No matter which you choose, all staterooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, plus all-new furnishings and marble bathrooms.

The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.

Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.

Regatta sails to destinations in Mexico, Asia, Australia and more.

What's more, cruisers are welcomed with complimentary Champagne upon arrival and can enjoy a fruit basket that's refreshed daily. A suite stewardess is assigned to each cabin to assist with requests as well. Sojourn is virtually identical to its sister ships, Seabourn Odyssey  and Seabourn Quest .

Outside the rooms, travelers can gamble at the casino, work up a sweat in the fitness center or relax at the spa. Those interested in soaking up the sun can snag a spot by one of two swimming pools or enjoy one of five hot tubs. Cruisers can also fuel their competitive juices with a round of shuffleboard or golf on the nine-hole putting green. When anchored, vacationers in select destinations can take advantage of the ship's water sports equipment, such as kayaks and paddle boats.

In the evening, cruisers can enjoy cocktails at one of the bars or dance under the stars. The ship's nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio means cruisers should expect exceptional service.

Complete Guide to Cruising from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach

While they would never be mistaken with the world’s most popular cruise ports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles and Long Beach are still heavily trafficked cruise ports.

Long Beach cruise terminal with Carnival ship

Hundreds of thousands of passengers each year sail from the Port of Los Angeles and the Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

Today, you can have your choice of cruise lines in the area, from Carnival to Princess to Norwegian to Royal Caribbean. Meanwhile, itineraries have expanded beyond simply the well-known Mexican Riviera trips to include coastal California cruises, trips through the Panama Canal, and even cruises to Hawaii and Canada.

Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Port Locations

Both ports are located just a few miles of each other, with one in San Pedro and the other in Long Beach.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, these cities are both part of the greater Los Angeles area and are about 20 miles south of downtown LA. If flying in for your cruise, expect the trip from Los Angeles International (LAX) to take at least 30 minutes and possibly more due to traffic.

Which port you cruise from will depend on which cruise line you sail. To help you find your way, we’ve covered each port in detail below.

Sailing From the World Cruise Center (Port of Los Angeles)

The Port of Los Angeles is the busier of the two ports. A number of lines, including Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity depart from the port.

The port features three berths (91-93). Expect it to take about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the port from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Los Angeles cruise berths

Getting to the Port of Los Angeles (World Cruise Center)

Southern California is known for its car culture. It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the most convenient way to get to the cruise ship is to drive (if you’re in the area and have a car) or take an Uber/Lyft. These services provide access from all major airports in the area. And you can be picked up anywhere else in the area to get to the ship on your own schedule.

Expect the ride to cost at least $50 for a car from LAX to the cruise port. Higher rates will apply if going a longer distance or during peak times.

Estimated ride times from major points of interest are below:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 30 min
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 25 min
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 45 min
  • Downtown: 40 min

You can read more about all your options on getting to the ship (including shuttles) and pricing on our Los Angeles cruise transportation page .

Parking at World Cruise Center

Of course, if you live in the area — as millions do — then you may be interested in simply driving and parking at the port.

The good news is that there is ample parking right at the port. You can park practically at the terminal and walk right in. While the convenience is nice, it does come at a cost. Rates are $20 per day for most vehicles. So over the course of a weeklong cruise, you can expect to spend $140.

For more details on parking, see our Los Angles cruise parking page here .

Want to park cheaper? If you are traveling from farther away and plan to stay at a hotel in the area, then look for a hotel with a park and cruise package. With these deals you can get your hotel and have parking (and often a shuttle) included.

See our list of Los Angles cruise hotels with parking deals .

Due to the location of the port, there aren’t any independent parking lots nearby that we know of.

Where to Stay for a Los Angeles Cruise

Flying into Los Angeles for a cruise? It’s always a good idea to plan to arrive into the city the day before. That way if there are any delays, you aren’t scrambling to make it to the port — or have any worry about missing the ship.

So where should you stay? The area around the port (San Pedro) offers a number of hotels within just 1-3 miles of the ships. This includes some right on the waterfront and some that offer a shuttle service to get guests to the cruise terminal.

You can see a list of nearby hotels to the World Cruise Center here .

Sailing From the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Los Angeles — while far from being the biggest cruise departure port in the country — offers two different cruise ports. The Long Beach terminal is a short distance from the Port of Los Angeles (about 15 minutes via car). It serves Carnival Cruise Lines, which primarily sails shorter trips to the Mexican Riviera.

The terminal here is one of the most unique in the country as it is a large dome. It used to house the famous Spruce Goose and also served as a soundstage for Hollywood movies. Today, it holds passengers as they prepare to board the ship.

Visitors will also recognize the historic Queen Mary, which is docked permanently at the port. As with the Port of Los Angeles, expect it to take about 30-45 minutes to get to the cruise port from the LAX airport, depending on traffic. If flying in, Long Beach Airport is much closer, reducing travel time.

Port of Long Beach

Getting to the Long Beach Cruise Port

As with the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, your best bet for getting to the port if you need transportation is with an Uber or Lyft. These services are widely available, including offering rides from the major airports.

Prices will vary depending on where you are coming from. For reference, you can expect to spend around $60 for a ride from Los Angeles International to the Long Beach cruise port. Prices will vary based on traffic.

Here are some estimated commute times from certain points:

  • Los Angeles International (LAX): 30-40 min
  • Long Beach Airport (LBG): 15 min
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA): 35 min
  • Downtown: 45 min

You can read more about all your options on getting to the ship and pricing on our Long Beach cruise transportation page .

Parking at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

For many people, they don’t have to worry about a ride to the port. Roughly 20 million people live in the greater Los Angeles area that includes Long Beach. That means many people are able to simply drive to the cruise ship.

Of course, if you are driving, then you will need a spot to park. The port offers ample parking in a garage that’s right next to the terminal. However, that convenience comes at a cost. The port charges $23 per day for parking. Over the course of a weeklong cruise, expect to spend upwards of $160.

For all the details on parking, see our Long Beach cruise parking page here .

There are also hotels in the area that offer cruise parking for guests. Stay a night and you can leave your car while you sail — for a reduced cost versus parking at the port. If you plan on staying in a hotel the night before your cruise, this deal can save you a nice chunk of change.

See our list of Long Beach cruise hotels with parking deals .

Where to Stay for a Long Beach Cruise

Flying into the area before your cruise? Or maybe you want to be able to relax before you sail, instead of having to drive to the cruise ship on the morning of your trip? No matter the reason, Long Beach offers a number of hotels that are within just a short distance of the terminal.

As well, the terminal is right across from the city of Long Beach itself. That provides a lot to do right near the ship. For example, you can stay the night before, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific or The Pike (an outdoor shopping mall with restaurants and entertainment options), or even spend some time on the beach.

The good news is there are plenty of options within just a few minutes of the port. You can see a list and details of nearby hotels to the Long Beach cruise port here .

Los Angeles Angels Rookie to Make Major League Debut vs. Mariners on Thursday

Teren kowatsch | 4 hours ago.

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo throws against the Minnesota Twins on June 30 at T-Mobile Park.

  • Seattle Mariners

On Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners beat the San Diego Padres 8-3 and put up five of those runs against a struggling rookie pitcher Adam Mazur. On Thursday, in Game 1 of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels, the Mariners will face another rookie — Jack Kochanowicz.

The difference between Mazur and Kochanowicz is that the latter will be making his major league debut.

It'll be a tough outing for the rookie as he will go toe-to-toe with Seattle starter Luis Castillo, who has a 3.72 ERA in 19 starts this year and is coming off an eight-strikeout game against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 5.

Kochanowicz has been with the Angels organization for five years. He was drafted in the third round of the 2019 MLB draft out of Harriton High School in Bala Cynwyd., Penn.

Kochanowicz didn't make his debut for Los Angeles' farm system until 2021, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the 2020 season.

He hasn't made an appearance in Triple-A this season, but in 16 starts with the Angels' Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas, he's posted a 4.55 ERA with 79 strikeouts.

Kochanowicz is ranked as the organization's No. 7 prospect, according to MLB.com . Kochanowicz is already on Los Angeles' 40-man roster.

Seattle has won four of their last six and took both games against the Padres on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Mariners have knocked three home runs in their last two games.

First pitch is 6:38 p.m. PT.

2024 election updates: 'I've gotta finish this job,' Biden says

He is holding his first post-debate news conference.

ABCNews logo

President Joe Biden is facing a critical point in his reelection bid as Democratic calls for him to exit the 2024 race continue to mount despite his efforts to shut them down.

A poor debate performance against Donald Trump reignited questions about Biden's age and fitness to carry out his campaign and serve another four years. Biden has defiantly insisted he is staying the course, telling lawmakers this week he is not going anywhere.

Thursday evening, Biden held his first post-debate news conference.

Top Dem on House Intelligence Committee calls on Biden to step aside after press conference

Following President Biden's NATO press conference, Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes released a statement, calling on Biden to "step away from the presidential campaign."

"The 2024 election will define the future of American democracy, and we must put forth the strongest candidate possible to confront the threat posed by Trump's MAGA authoritarianism," Himes said.

"I no longer believe that is Joe Biden, and I hope that, as he has throughout a lifetime of public service, he will continue to put our nation first, and, as he promised, make way for a new generation of leaders," he said.

Rep. Himes becomes the 15th House Dem to call for this publicly, per ABC News' count .

Biden bats away questions about age and fitness during lengthy solo news conference

Biden has wrapped up a nearly hourlong news conference in which he batted away questions about his age and fitness for office, while defending his record.

The president opened with an eight-minute statement, largely about the NATO summit he hosted in Washington, before taking reporters' questions.

Biden called on reporters from 10 news organizations. He was asked about Democrats calling on him to drop his reelection bid, Vice President Kamala Harris and foreign policy.

Biden says won't leave the presidential race as long as he has a chance to win

The president insisted that he has no plans to drop out to make room for Vice President Kamala Harris or anyone else.

Asked if he would considering bowing out before November if shown data that Harris could perform better against Trump, Biden responded, "No, unless they came back and said, 'There's no way you can win.'"

"No one's saying that," Biden said. "No poll says that."

He conceded that there are probably other candidates "who can beat Trump" but pointed to his campaign's strong fundraising and operations in battleground states, noting that anyone other than him would have "to start from scratch."

Biden cedes 'others could beat Trump' but believes he's most qualified

"I think I am the best qualified to win," Biden said as his news conference neared an end. "But there are other people who could beat Trump, too."

"But it would be hard to start from scratch," he quickly added. "We talk about money raised. We are not doing bad. We've got about $220 million in the bank. We are doing well."

President Joe Biden speaks at a news conference following the NATO Summit in Washington, Thursday, July 11, 2024.

California heat wave won’t be letting up this week

This prolonged, early-summer heat wave is doing a number on California and other Western states . Dangerous, triple-digit temperatures have shattered records and the heat is being blamed for several deaths.

How much longer will it linger?

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings across much of the state this week. Some in Southern California are currently running until late Thursday, but many in effect for the inland valleys and deserts run until Saturday night.

“Extreme heat has become the nation’s deadliest weather-related hazard,” Times reporter Grace Toohey wrote Monday . “The National Weather Service … has continued to beef up its warning systems to encourage people, especially vulnerable populations, to take precautions .”

Amid this record-shattering heat wave, the state released a first-of-its-kind report that seeks to quantify the full, often hidden costs that extreme heat causes in the Golden State. Looking at seven heat events in California over a 10-year period, researchers found that heat killed nearly 460 people, hospitalized more than 5,000 and cost $7.7 billion overall.

Before we get further into that, let’s look at how our current extreme heat event is affecting Californians.

Multiple daily and all-time temperature records have been broken across the West

Those include:

  • 124 degrees in Palm Springs (all-time record);
  • 120 in Las Vegas (all-time record);
  • 119 in Redding (all-time record);
  • 115 at Palmdale Airport (all-time record);
  • 114 in Fresno (daily record for July 7);
  • 110 in Merced (daily record for July 6).

The desert cities of Palmdale and Lancaster set records for the most consecutive days at or above 110 degrees over the weekend (four), the weather service reported.

It wasn’t just high temperatures that peaked. Some regions also saw the hottest low temperatures on record, including Bakersfield and Fresno , where lows were 82 degrees and 81 degrees, respectively.

“It’s not normal, this is excessive heat,” weather service meteorologist Dan Berc told The Times. “We’re talking 10 to 12 degrees above normal for the hottest part of the year.”

Hikers walk a trail on a hot day

The extreme heat is being blamed for several deaths

A group of motorcyclists were riding through Death Valley National Park on Saturday, where temperatures reached 128 degrees — when several riders experienced severe heat illness. One person died at the scene and others were hospitalized.

A woman incarcerated at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla was hospitalized last week and died Saturday. A prisoner advocacy group is blaming her death on “ heatstroke and neglect ,” but a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson told the San Francisco Chronicle that the woman appeared to have died due to “an ongoing medical condition.”

Extreme heat is also suspected to have killed four people in the area of Portland, Ore.

The heat is making wildfires harder to fight — and upping the risk for more

At least 18 fires are burning in the state, according to Cal Fire .

The largest as of Monday was the Lake fire in the Santa Barbara County mountains, which has scorched more than 20,000 acres and is 8% contained.

Weather service forecasters warn that the heat wave “ will continue to bring elevated to critical fire weather conditions ” and could easily fuel the growth of existing fires.

The state spotlights “unseen impacts” of extreme heat

The Times has extensively covered extreme heat’s effects in California, reporting in 2021 that the state “chronically undercounts the death toll and has failed to address the growing threat of heat-related illness and death.”

The California Department of Insurance released a report last week analyzing seven major heat events in regions across the state between 2013 and 2022, in an effort to better understand the effects that extreme heat brings, especially on the most vulnerable communities.

It estimated that the total insured and uninsured cost of those events — including costs related to health and safety, economic activity, infrastructure and energy — was $7.7 billion. Researchers noted that nearly 460 people died from heat-related causes during those seven events. Thousands more were hospitalized or treated in emergency rooms and urgent care facilities.

A bar graph shows various costs in dollars for heat events in California.

The study also linked extreme heat to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost labor productivity, losses caused by power outages, as well as damages and delays due to infrastructure failures — mostly roads and rail lines that fail in the heat.

The new study also supports existing research on the racial and economic disparities of extreme heat.

“Black, Native American, and White Hispanic estimated mortality rates from extreme heat are higher than for Asian and White Non-Hispanic populations,” the study states. “In some cases, the rates for overburdened groups are twice as high as for Asian and White Non-Hispanic groups.”

The study’s authors note that the full costs of extreme heat are much higher and “cannot be quantified or fully estimated.”

The analysis “underscores the urgency of California’s efforts to create a groundbreaking heat wave ranking and early warning system,” Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara wrote in the report. “It’s a call for comprehensive strategies to address the previously unseen impacts of extreme heat.”

That could prove difficult, as Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed a state budget that cut more than $107 million in funding for heat resiliency and other climate-related programs. Voters could decide in November to restore some of those dollars via Proposition 4 , a climate bond, which would borrow $10 billion to fund climate and environmental projects — including heat resiliency work.

Scientists say human-caused climate change is contributing to more frequent extreme weather events around the world, which Californians have experienced plenty of in recent years. Experts project that our wet and dry seasons will only get more intense as the planet continues to heat up . That means more intense storms, worse flooding and more dangerous heat — along with all the threats to health and infrastructure those bring.
